T
he young in America are being forced into cruel levels of debt, and this debt is already curbing their life prospects. Its economic effects are damaging to everyone. Yet with Washington frozen, the debt burdens on the young are likely to get worse. For the young, a college education or post-high school professional training is the equivalent of what a high school degree was a generation ago. College is the necessary but not sufficient ticket to the middle class. For the nation, educating the next generation beyond high school is essential both for producing the citizens we need for a healthy democracy and for producing the workforce we need for a healthy economy. And yet college costs keep soaring, growing faster even than health-care costs. Government support for public universities and community colleges is down 25 percent since 2000. Students and their families must pay more and more of the cost. But family incomes have stagnated, failing to keep up with soaring costs of college, health care and housing. The result is an explosion of stu-
STATE
F
dent debt. It has nearly quadrupled since 2003, soaring to nearly a trillion dollars. Two-thirds of all students now graduate with debts averaging $27,000. The poorer the family, the higher the percentage of students with debt. These debts are brutal. 12 percent are more than 90 days delinquent, but that figure is misleading since nearly one-half (47 percent) are in deferment (students can defer payment on their debt while in school, for example). That means nearly 1 out of four working loans are delinquent. Staggeringly, over 20 percent of loans for those 30-49 -- in the peak of their earning years -- are more than 90 days delinquent. Because of the force of the bank lobby, student loans can’t be discharged with bankruptcy. They cannot be refinanced. They burden students for a lifetime. The feds will even garnish your Social Security to repay them. As Slate contributor David Dayen argues, this is very much like indentured servitude that Americans suffered at the beginning of the Republic. Then impoverished workers and peasants traded years of labor for the cost of passage to the new world. For three to seven years, depending on the contract, they would labor, virtually like slaves, for masters who paid their way. This injustice offends America’s tradition. Historically, America prided itself on its public education. We were first to provide secondary school free for all. With the GI bill, three million veterans received tuition-free college or advanced training. For much of the post war period, great public universities -- from City College in New York to the fabled California schools -- were free or close to it.
Now, as college education becomes ever more necessary, it is becoming ever more unaffordable. These debts, racked up before beginning one’s work life, are devastating. It means that the young postpone saving. Many more must live at home, burdening parents trying to save for retirement. The young will buy a home later (if ever). They will marry later. They will accumulate far less for their retirements -- even as they are expected to save more due to the collapse of pensions. Demos, a research institution, created a model to estimate the losses. Their study found that for a young couple with B.A. degrees from four-year colleges, with median incomes and college debts for their education level, they would lose an average of $208,000 over the course of a lifetime, in comparison to a couple without college debts. Two thirds of the losses would come from retirement savings -- since they would be unable to save as much while paying down their debts. One-third comes from loss of home equity, since they would either purchase a home later or be able to afford less of a down payment. Not surprisingly, researchers at the Federal Reserve worry that the debt burdens will harm the economy, as the young put off buying cars or renting apartments or starting new families. This is the down side of Gilded Age extremes in wealth. As the rich get richer, they rig the rules to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Top rates go down; tax dodges proliferate. Some billionaire hedge fund operators pay lower rates than their chauffeurs. Billion dollar companies like
GE use overseas tax tricks to pocket refunds rather than pay taxes. From 2008 to 2012, GE paid less in taxes than the smallest mom and pop store with a profit. So instead of taxing the rich and powerful, we squeeze public investment. Government cuts back on support for universities. Students and families get the bill. The result is that an entire generation racks up deep debts or foregoes needed education. This can’t go on. We need fair taxes to generate the income needed to make college affordable for all who merit it. We should put clear limits on the debt burden graduates must bear -- and how long they must bear it. Rep. Karen Bass has a bill -- the Student Loan Fairness Act - that would limit repayment to 10 percent of after-tax income and 10 years at most. Senator Elizabeth Warren suggests students should be given the same interest rate -- 0.75 percent -- that the Federal Reserves gives the biggest banks (that taxpayers had to bail out). The only way this will change is if students, parents and indebted graduates make their voices heard. But all of us should demand action. It is unacceptable that the sons and daughters of America’s working families must face indentured servitude simply to get the education they need. You can write to the Rev. First Male Elected as Texas Woman’s University Student Body President
or the first time in its 113-year history, the student body of Texas Woman’s University – the nation’s largest university primarily for women – has elected a male president of its Student Government Association (SGA). Landon Dickerson, 21, a junior biology/pre-med major from Houston, was elected SGA president for TWU’s main campus in Denton during elections held at the university March 31-April 3. Mr. Dickerson, who was not even aware he was the first male elected SGA president until after the election, said, “Being the first male elected never even entered my mind. I wanted to be SGA president because I have a heart for people and a need to serve.” Mr. Dickerson has been involved with the TWU student government for two years. In his term as executive treasurer of the TWU Student Senate, he presented to the university’s Student Service Fee Allocation Board. “My experience at TWU has been a turning point in developing my leadership capabilities,” he said. “I ran for SGA president to make a difference. I feel that I am the right person

to address the students’ needs with the administration and ensure our voices are heard as a new chancellor and president arrives at TWU.” Mr. Dickerson graduated from the KIPP Houston High School in 2011 and transferred to TWU from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2012. In addition to his student government service, he is a member of the university’s Multicultural Student Network and a TWU Pioneer Ambassador for prospective students. “I inform potential students – including men – that TWU prepares you for the real world by allowing you to work with people very different from yourself. As a male student, you get to see what it is like to be a minority and still succeed.” Although Mr. Dickerson is the first male elected as the TWU SGA president, he is not the first male to serve in that position. Russell Mariott was appointed to complete the SGA president term for the spring 2005 semester.

A Mother’s Health: Having Children While Living with a Rare Disease
earning you have a rare, chronic medical condition can be unsettling, frustrating and downright scary. For primary immunodeficiency (PI) patient Rebecca Johnson, 33, it also made her question whether she could realize her dream of becoming a mother. It wasn’t until hearing the story of another woman with PI who had a baby that Rebecca’s fears subsided. Now with a baby of her own, Rebecca wants to share her story with other women with PI who may want to start a family.
Lifelong struggles Throughout her childhood and beyond, Rebecca had repeated illnesses, ranging from pneumonia on her first birthday to staph infections. She also experienced frequent bouts of colds, flu and other maladies. At age 26, Rebecca was diagnosed with common variable immune deficiency (CVID), one of the most common of the more than 200 types of PI disorders recognized by the World Health Organization. According to the Immune Deficiency Foundation, CVID affects approximately 1 in 25,000 people. CVID is an antibody deficiency that leaves the immune system unable to defend against bacteria and viruses, resulting in recurrent and often severe infections. The condition affects both males and females. Shortly after diagnosis, Rebecca began treatments with subcutaneous immunoglobulin to boost her immune system. While her overall health improved, Rebecca became concerned about how CVID and its treatment might affect her dream of becoming a mother. “My immunologist addressed my concerns and connected me with a woman with PI who had re-

A healthy, happy outlook Today, Rebecca works full time as an interior design project manager, and enjoys participating in a range of rigorous physical activities, including hiking, biking, traveling with her husband (a personal trainer), and spending quality time with her son. She continues to treat her condition with Hizentra®, (Immune Globulin Subcutaneous [Human]). Hizentra, from CSL Behring, is an immunoglobulin replacement therapy indicated for the treatment of primary humoral immunodeficiency. The

ENTERTAINMENT David Banner Discovers the Love By Cecilia Smith, Entertainment
W
In Acting
hen you’ve already reached the top, what peak is there left to climb? Well if you’re David Banner, there’s always a new goal, a new mountain to be tackled. Despite a multitude of hardships, the Jackson, Mississippi native’s intense work ethic has helped him endure the worst of times, and soar through the best of them. Taking his name from the lead character of The Incredible Hulk, Banner has indeed set himself as a beast in the game. Using the considerable buzz gained as a member of the duo Crooked Lettaz he formally burst onto the scene with the Lil Flip assisted “Like a Pimp” after it began circulating from station to station. Not content with being contained simply within the Hip Hop community, Banner has since gone on to conquer film as well; and has also become an instrumental force of urban activism. Banner took the time out of his busy schedule earlier this week to speak about his latest project, a supporting role in Where’s The Love , an original romantic drama which made its debut this past Saturday on the UP Network. Banner plays the best friend of one of two famous marriage counselors, whose own marriage is on the rocks. The film navigates the couple’s attempts to dispense advice, while ignoring the fact that it’s not working for their own marriage. Also starring in the ensemble cast are Lamman Rucker, Denise Boutte, Terri J. Vaughn Karon Joseph Riley, Darian “Big Tigger” Morgan, Ahmed Lucan, Shirley Strawberry, Nicole Eggert, Kandi
Denise Boutte and David Banner
Burruss, Tommy Ford, Letoya Luckett, and Angie Stone. HSM: While there have been many artists that have transitioned over to film, few have found true success or acclaim at it; what do you think has helped you in this avenue? David Banner: Great actors train, I’ve been in acting school for over 10 years. If you look back at say Tupac back in the day he was a performer first. He attended a performing arts school first. If you look at most great actors it’s the man-hours that they put in;
www.StyleMagazine.com moc.enizagaMelytS.www
It takes consistency and training. HSM: I recently got a chance to catch an older film of yours, The Confidant . Is this a dark character similar to that one, or will you be taking on a different role for this film? Banner: A lot of my fans seem to complain about some of my darker roles but I have no problem taking on happier ones. The danger in always playing a dark role as a Black man is that it sometimes turns into a caricature of how some perceive us to be. HSM: They really pulled together a great cast for this film. What about the film drew you to the project? Banner: I love that it’s based on honesty. The whole film is built around two marriage counselors whose own marriage isn’t working. It’s real. As an entertainer, people often don’t realize that we have regular problems just like everyone else does. The film revolves around that concept. Read the full interview on www.stylemagazine.com.

POLITICAL
Bostic Becomes Stafford Schools First Black Superintendent
By Burt Levine, Political Writer
T
he Stafford Municipal School District has unanimously approved the selection of Dr. Robert Bostic to begin serving this month as the first African American superintendent of the diverse 3.353 student school district that straddles Beltway 8 near US 59 in Fort Bend County and takes pride in its being Texas only municipal school district in which its boundaries mirror its city. “I am looking forward to working with Mayor Leonard Scarcella, the elected city council and school board and most important the parents, students and faculty that make up this dynamic school district,” said Bostic, who was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Academic Programs at Denton ISD north of Fort Worth. “Stafford is known as a community where the mayor and other elected officials, businesses, faculty and family come together not only in spite of its diversity but because of it to offer all its students world class education in a small school setting,” said Bostic of the district that is home to a 40 percent African American, 42 percent Hispanic, 9 percent Asian and 5 percent white student body and a more than 400 person faculty that is more than 60 percent minority. Bostic earned his Bachelors degree from Langston University and his Masters in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma. Recently he received his superintendent’s certificate and Ed.D at the University of North Texas.
Dr. Robert Bostic
Recently named Texas Administrator of the Year, Bostic has been recognized for leading diverse campuses with student populations that had majority minority populations. Prior to coming to Denton ISD, he was a school principal for 14 years where he served a diverse population including Title 1 and English as Second Language students for Oklahoma City, Richardson and Carrollton-Farmers Branch school dis-
tricts. Bostic was principal of Rainwater Elementary and Sheffield Intermediate in C-FB school district for five years. He also was principal for Forest Lane Academy of Arts and Communication in Richardson and Telstar Elementary in Oklahoma City. He has been an assistant principal and a first-grade and fifthgrade teacher. In 2005, he initiated a competitive robotics league in the C-FB school district - a program he successfully implemented three years ago in Denton ISD. The local robotics programs now includes elementary through high school students. Bostic is married to an elementary school teacher and together they are the parents of two children including a soon to be junior at Prairie View A&M University. In fast growing Fort Bend County, Stafford now joins the county’s three other main school districts that feature African American superintendents at their helm. Fort Bend ISD last year named Dr. Charles Dupre as its first African American superintendent. In Katy ISD the superintendent is Alton Frailey and in Lamar CISD in the Richmond and Rosenberg areas the superintendent is Thomas Randle. Stafford faces many tough challenges but terrific opportunities. Together I know we can continue to make this SMSD one of Texas’ finest.
BOOK REVIEW Mistakes I Made at Work
Edited by Jessica Bacal
By Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
E
verybody knows what you did. It didn’t take long for word to get around, actually; you can tell by the smirks and the lack of eye-contact in the hall. It was a colossal error, one that cost the company more than you care to think about. And it was all your fault. How can you ever bounce back from something like this? Will it end your career? Twenty-five leading women say no – and you’ll find out why in the new book “Mistakes I Made at Work,” edited by Jessica Bacal. It’s a platitude everybody’s heard before: learn from your mistakes. Embrace them, we’re told, and grow from them. But Jessica Bacal wondered how, with a culture that demands perfection from women and a reluctance to discuss such things, we can ever learn anything from our errors? She contacted influential women from several walks of life, and asked them about their mistakes, what they learned, and how they grew from it. Laurel Touby, founder of Mediabistro.com, learned the hard way that no job was worth ignoring who she really was, down-deep. Her advice is to “pursue work environments that feel like the right fit for you.” For writer Rachel Simmons, achievement was the only goal until she accepted a Rhodes scholarship. She realized, once she was at Oxford, that being a Rhodes Scholar was a big mistake for her. She was embarrassed to quit and her family was angry, but it was a turning point in her life. Her advice: “Don’t be afraid to quit.”

Ofri: nobody learns through humiliation. Says writer Alina Tugend: master the art of asking for money. And from writer J. Courtney Sullivan: “be a kind and generous coworker. You never know where it might lead you in the future.” As a Champion Goof-Up from way back, I approached “Mistakes I Made at Work” with a little trepidation. When it comes to blunders, there are lots of chestnuts out there that are of little help – and then there’s this book. I was pleased with the candor that editor Jessica Bacal found when interviewing the women she chose. Some of the mistakes in this book might seem minor, while some are pretty good-sized but the meaning behind each brief chapter is the same; to wit: these women messed up, they were embarrassed, and they lived to tell about it. Best of all, things were often better, post-oops. And wow, that’s pretty comforting to anybody who knows she can’t cast that first stone… This is an excellent book to give to a new grad, an old hand, an employee who’s feeling redfaced, or YOU. Reading “Mistakes I Made at Work,” in fact, is something you’ll be glad you did. Lawyer and social activist Reshma Jessica Bacal Saujani lost a Congressional race in 2009 and “I felt like I had let [supporters] down.” She advises readers to keep trying: “fail fast, fail hard, and fail often.” From economist Carla Harris: if you “don’t know, you need to ask.” From writer Cheryl Strayed: “We’re all rough drafts.” From physician Danielle

ntimate venue, a man and his piano. The September release of John Legend’s Love In The Future album, especially his “All Of Me” single have become a wedding staple among a collection of tunes from the man who seemingly emits cool in all phases. Calm nearly at all times, Legend was in complete command on Sunday night (May 5th0 inside of the University of Houston’s Cullen Performance Hall for his latest All Of Me Tour. He remarked about his own story, one of persistence in performing at “The Living Room” in New York while working on his debut album Get Lifted, which turns 10 later this December. Legend played “Refuge” for the first time during the tour via audience request admitting that he only remembered 99 percent of the words. In addition he sang a rare cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark,” which he first performed on the Jimmy Fallon show, hoping that Springsteen would tell him that he liked the song. A year later, he got a letter from Bruce asking him to perform it again at a charity function. In true Legend fashion, he even teased the audience with a performance of “All Of Me” to close out his set, almost making diehards scream with disappointment who thought he would exit only performing “Ordinary People.” At least one couple got an engagement song out of the show with a performance of “You & I”.

The plaintiffs argue that the agenda only gave notice that the consolidation of high schools was to be addressed; it failed to give notice that the repurposing of Jesse H. ny mother will tell you there is no greater joy in life that of being a mother. Nurturing, teaching, and watching their children grow into productive citizens just makes their hearts skip a beat. Unfortunately, the route to motherhood is not always easy for some women. Infertility or other health concerns cause some moms-to-be to seek other methods to get their bundles of joy. This Mother’s Day Houston Style Magazine honors adoptive moms, women who vowed to be mothers no matter what.

she exceeds the expectation. She makes me want to be a better person on a daily basis,” said Jasmine. Kimberley believes “there is no one greater love than a mother other than God himself.” She continued, “Being a mom has allowed me to be a role model for my children. I carry the load of the family daily and I know someday that my daughter will be a great mom as well.” Dr. Tameya Sam and Family
Dr. Tameya Sam For years Mother’s Day was a day that would make Tameya very depressed. Like many women with infertility issues, she hated the day because she didn’t have children of her own. After trying this and that, she and her husband were led to adopt. Through prayers to God and the help of Depelchin Children’s Center, Tameya became the mother of a bouncing baby boy named Joshua. “I have never felt so much love in my heart in my life,” said Tameya, as she spoke about the first time Joshua was placed in her arms. Now Mother’s Day is a celebration at the Sam’s household. “He (her husband) starts every Monday before Mother’s Day with pink teacup roses, because they are my favorite, and a small gift each day until Sunday.” Two kids and twelve years later it is still the same. On the date of Mother’s Day the family has their traditional meal at Luby’s, partakes in a movie, and finishes the day with dessert at Marble Slab Creamery. As the mother of an adoptive child and a child she birth Tameya says, “There is no difference in my unconditional love, dedication, commitment, and relationship, I have for both of my children.” Dr. Kimberley Booker There is a lot of joy associated in becoming a mother but there is also a lot of fear. That is what Kimberley first felt when she became the adoptive mother to her daughter Jasmine. “I had no idea if Jasmine would accept me and it was scary. I knew that I could provide love but I was hoping that it would be reciprocated,” she said. And it was. “I know for sure I would not be where I am today without her help,” said Jasmine. Kimberley and Jasmine became mother and daughter when Jasmine was in the ninth grade. “I’ve never had my biological mother in my life,” said Jasmine as she spoke about how Kimberley accept-

Bianca Anderson Before her son came into her life, Bianca defined a mother as the lady that birthed you. And now she knows a mother is much more than that. Bianca became a mother before she realized it. After meeting a precious baby boy through family when he was just two weeks, Bianca found herself spending more and more time with the little boy who stole her heart at first sight. “Jacob would visit me and his overnight visits turned to weekends. His weekend visits turned to weeks. His week visits turned to summer vacations. And our bond just kept growing. It has been nine years and I have loved every moment,” said Bianca, who now shares the responsibility of
my heart.” Now as the mother of both a child she birth and one she got through God’s blessing, Bianca says it is just a pure joy in being a mother. “Just knowing that I am playing a special part in my children’s lives is so wonderful.” Dr. Jonita Reynolds Jonita does not consider herself an adoptive mom, but simply a mother. She officially became the mother of her twins – Ronald and Reagan - when the birth-mother hand selected Jonita and her husband to raise them. “After talking to her (the birth-mother) on the phone and meeting with her, she finalized her decision and was determined to ensure that I was at her side when they were born.” When the twins were born and washed off they were placed in the arms of their mother (Jonita) and that’s where they have been throughout their lives. An overjoyed Jonita said that nothing compares to that of being a mother. “A Mom to me is “unconditional love” personified. With all that I have been blessed to accomplish in life, absolutely nothing compares to the unspeakable joy experienced from motherhood.” Understanding that motherhood is a great blessing and responsibility Jonita and her entire family’s motto is “to whom much is given, much is required…” It is why this is the biggest lesson that the twins will learn from their parents. “It is utterly important to my husband and I that their foundation is built on spiritually-rooted fertile ground.” Jonita thanks her own mother and the guidance from her sister for being the great mom she is today. “Thanks to the love and nurturing that my sister and I received from our Mom, I strive, daily, to ensure that our bundles of joy know, unceasingly, through my words and deeds that they are my heart and that I love them to the moon and back.” If your mom is still in your life treat her well not just today but everyday. For those, like myself, whose mothers are no longer on this side of the Jordan cherish her memory and honor those who still mother you. Houston Style Magazine wishes mothers everywhere a very Happy Mother’s Day!

raising Jacob with her husband. The couple also has a son, whom Bianca birth, named Christopher. “I remember the first time Jacob called me mom. I was like wow. I guess that is what I am,” she thought. Even though she was taking Jacob to school, made sure he had food to eat, and was providing and loving him the way a mother loves a child she never thought of herself as a mother. She might not have thought it but the love and care she provided was something that even a child recognized. Hence why Jacob started calling Bianca mom on his very own. “It melted

10 Simple Ways to Make Mother’s Day Special
W
ith Mother’s Day coming up it’s time to start thinking of the best present you can give to mom. Whether it’s a sparkling piece of jewelry, a handmade card, or breakfast in bed, mom will love the sweet and thoughtful gesture because it’s coming from the one she loves. Get the little ones in on a special Mother’s Day surprise by having them help out with some simple things. They’ll love that they get to help do something nice for mom when she’s always doing something nice for them. There’s no gift that’s too small for Mother’s Day; it’s the thought that cou nts so get creative and put some effort into making mom a surprise that she’ll remember for years to come.
1. Give her flowers. Everyone loves flowers and mom won’t be able to resist a lovely bouquet of roses, tulips, or orchids. They smell wonderful and look beautiful when tied up in a ribbon and placed in a pretty vase on the table. You can even have them delivered to the front door with a sweet note card attached for an even bigger surprise.
2. Make her breakfast in bed. Instead of having mom make you breakfast, return the favor by cooking up a special Mother’s Day breakfast of all of mom’s favorites. You can make blueberry pancakes, french toast, eggs and bacon -- and don’t forget the orange juice! For an added bonus, serve it on a tray delivered to her in bed first thing in the morning and you’re sure to put a smile on her face.
3. Make sure mom is well rested. If mom has little ones running around to take care of, chances are she isn’t getting much sleep or relaxation. This Mother’s Day you can find the perfect solution in Sleepingbaby.com’s Zipadee-Zip sleep garments
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
for babies and toddlers. These adorably cozy sleep sacs are a wonder product that helps babies make the transition out of swaddling with no fuss. With Zipadee-Zip, baby will be asleep in no time and mom will truly be sleeping like a baby. Also, make mom a cup of chamomile tea the night before so she can get a good night’s sleep.
There’s no better way for mom to relax than at a spa where she can get a deep tissue massage, soothing facial, and a mani/pedi. A day of pampering is just what she needs to feel rejuvenated and you can even plan a spa day for her at home with some homemade bath bombs, face masks, lotion and more.
4. Create a handmade card.
8. Clean up the house.
Most moms love receiving handmade cards from their husbands and kids. These cards come straight from the heart and show that effort was put into designing and making the card. Store-bought cards are nice but it’s a homemade card that mom will treasure forever, especially when it has a sincere note inside expressing your love and appreciation for mom.
Mom is constantly asking you to help her clean up the house by picking up scattered toys, books, clothes, etc. but how often do we actually listen? Tell mom to take the day off and get some fresh air outdoors while you stay home and clean the house from top to bottom for a present that will truly surprise mom.
5. Make a coupon book.
9. Make a scrapbook.
A homemade coupon book is a great idea for kids because they don’t have to go out and buy a present. All it takes is some paper and crayons and a little bit of imagination to come up with some fun coupon ideas. Make a coupon for one free back massage, a bubble bath, completed chores, a cooked dinner, etc. You can get really creative with these and mom gets to redeem them whenever she feels the need to take a break.
A personal scrapbook for mom is a precious gift that she will adore because you can include pictures of the whole family and write short anecdotes and memories for her to keep. Have fun decorating the scrapbook with stickers and more and you can even make a special page for each member of the family.
10. Bake her a cake. You can’t have a celebration without having some cake! Find out what mom’s favorite kind of cake is and find a recipe to bake it from scratch. It might take a few tries to get it right but it’s pretty simple to bake a cake and it’s fun to decorate. If all else fails, head to your local bakery and pick up a fresh cake and some cookies that mom will love.
6. Get her a necklace. You can’t go wrong with getting mom nice jewelry and a simple necklace is a beautiful gift that mom can wear every day. The necklaces from Jinja Jewelry are handmade in Bali using high quality coral and silver jewelry. Their necklaces are exclusive creations and each purchase helps support the people of Bali by providing them with a safe and secure future.

ou might have said, “It doesn’t happen in our social circle.” You may have even heard others say, “It only happens in the poor areas.” These are statements that can be heard or expressed when talking about alcohol and drug addiction, but the truth is that addiction crosses all racial barriers and social circles. Addiction doesn’t discriminate and some people are still in denial about the countless faces of an addict. An addict can be the white collar executive, the soccer mom or the church member. Whatever the face of the addict, The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston (The Council) has been continuously committed and successful in providing services to all who may be impacted by alcohol and drug addiction. Last week The Council hosted the Waggoners Foundation Speaker Series’ 31st Annual Spring Luncheon to raise awareness and donations to help continue their plight against addiction. This year’s event paid tribute to Virgil Waggoner, who passed away late last year. The Waggoner family has been instrumental in The Council’s work in the community successfully treating drug and alcohol addiction. Grammy winner Natalie Cole was the keynote speaker and shared her powerful and inspirational story of addiction and recovery with over 1,100 attendees. Cou-

rageous and confident, Cole didn’t hold back giving the raw and real truth about her personal experiences and struggles with addiction. Like so many others, Cole had difficulty facing this hurdle head on, but with successful treatment and support she is a shining example that there is hope and a rainbow at the end. Natalie Cole proves that you can successfully survive after addiction and treatment. The Council’s work educates the community daily about addiction and exposes the community to the truth that the face of an addict can be anyone, no matter the background. tinue to help their clients with treatment, education and prevention. This annual fundraiser assists The Council in providing quality services to as many as possible, turning no one away. The Council was founded in 1946 and for over five decades this agency has changed the lives of clients and their families with effective treatment against drug and alcohol addiction. The Council continues to reach new heights in treating addiction because of their sensitive and unique approach in treating not just the addict, but also providing education and services for their entire family. The Council’s Kids Camp is an important facet of the treatment process that helps parents and children (ages 7-12) open the lines of communication and heal family relationships. Also, their

clinical team is comprised of licensed health professionals, graduate interns and post-graduate fellows. The Council’s clinical team has significant experience in substance abuse treatment. They not only treat the addiction, but the mental health disorder that can come along with an addiction. The Council’s concurrent treatment of these issues increases the chance for an addict to have successful recovery. The Council’s numerous testimonies from clients and their families show why their work is necessary and celebrated. Addiction affects one in four Housto nians and there are still unfortunately a number of myths about addiction that lead to shame and stigma, but The Council works daily to overcome this challenge in our community. With events like the Waggoners Foundation Speaker Series’ Annual Spring Luncheon bringing in speakers like Natalie Cole, The Council will be around for many years to come continuing to heal our community. Student Loans to Cost More This Fall By Jennifer Liberto CNN/Stylemagazine.com
S
terest rates. Based on rates set at Wednesday’s Treasury bond auction, undergraduate loans will likely pay an interest rate of around 4.66% and graduate school loans around 6.21%. That compares to 3.86% for undergraduates and 5.41% for graduates last year. For seniors, with only one year of college left, it won’t hurt as much. If they take out the maximum government student loans available for a year of $5,500, it could mean an additional $250 in interest payments over a 10-year period. Freshmen, with at least four years of college ahead of them, will hurt more. They could pay $2,150 more over the life of the loan than what they’d owe if Congress had kept rates at 3.4%, according to the Institute for College Access & Success. The analysis is based on April estimates by the Congressional Budget Office. Rates are expected to climb even higher in coming years. For more information, visit www.cnn.com.

Ford Says It Will Buy Back $1.8B in Stock
Ford says it will buy back up to about 116 million shares of company stock worth about $1.8 billion. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker says the buybacks will help offset potential dilution from convertible debt and stock-based compensation for employees. Those can increase the number of shares on the market and weigh on per-share earnings. By buying back its shares, Ford can help boost its earnings per share. The price tag is based on Wednesday’s closing price of $15.46 per share. For more information, visit www.hispanicbusiness.com.
