Legendary Actress Ruby Dee Dies at 91 CNN/Stylemagazine.com Newswire Ruby Dee, the award-winning actress whose sevendecade career included triumphs on stage and screen, has died. She was 91. Dee died peacefully Wednesday at her New Rochelle, New York, home, according to her representative, Michael Livingston. Born Ruby Ann Wallace in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1922, she took the surname Dee after marrying blues singer Frankie Dee two decades later. It was around the time of her divorce from Dee that she began acting in the 1940s in New York, first appearing on screen in the 1946 musical “That Man of Mine.” A role in “The Jackie Robinson Story” brought her national attention. It was in the acting realm where she would meet the ultimate love of her life, Ossie Davis while performing in the 1945 Broadway play “Jeb.” He proposed three years later with a telegram he sent from Chicago, where he was touring in a play. Dee and Davis married in 1948 and remained married for 56 years. The couple was a formidable force in both the performing arts community and the civil rights movement. Davis preceded his wife in death in 2005. Dee is survived by three children, Guy Davis, Hasna Muhammad Davis and Nora Day Davis.

he freeing of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl after five years in Taliban captivity in exchange for five Taliban captives held in the military’s Guantanamo Bay prison has generated more fury than celebration. Republican legislators rail that the Taliban prisoners are murderous, with Republican Representative Mike Rogers, chair of the House Intelligence Committee, claiming that three of the five are likely to return to the battle. Some are outraged the president “negotiated with terrorists,” cutting a deal with the Taliban. Democratic legislators led by California Senator Dianne Feinstein are in high dudgeon because they weren’t given 30 day notice, as required by law. Some in the military are furious because Bergdahl was captured when he left the base alone without permission. American soldiers reportedly lost their lives in the effort

The Freeing of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl to find him. Some scorn Bergdahl as a deserter, if not a traitor. The president has been savaged for making the trade. Bergdahl’s father has received death threats in emails. His home town cancelled a scheduled celebration, worried about violent demonstrations by outsiders. All this, to my mind, says a lot more about the horrible divisions in America, than the actions of Sgt. Bergdahl or the President. Our military and our country pride itself on leaving no man behind. We expect the president, our military leaders, our soldiers to do what they can to bring our soldiers back, and to free them from captivity if needed. In that tradition, the freedom of five Taliban terrorists would be considered a minor price to pay for one American soldier. That proud principle applies to every soldier. It doesn’t apply only to the courageous or the brave. It doesn’t apply only to whites or blacks. It doesn’t apply only to officers and not privates. We leave no man -- and in today’s military, no woman -- behind, period. As for negotiating with the Taliban, they were holding Bergdahl captive -- reportedly keeping him in a metal cage in the dark after he tried to escape. Who else would we negotiate with? It doesn’t do any good to negotiate with our friends. To free a prisoner of war, the president has no choice but to negotiate with our

enemies. The president would have been wise to inform the nabobs of the Senate ahead of time. But given the need for absolute secrecy, one can imagine why he was reluctant to involve them, no matter how senior their rank. As for the exchange with the five Taliban prisoners, the reality is that they would have to be tried and executed or released eventually. Locking people up in Guantanamo without charges or trial is a disgrace to America’s principles. But even then, we aren’t going to keep these folks in prison forever. The U.S. is getting out of Afghanistan. The longest war in our history is coming to an end. Trading these prisoners to free an American POW is just common sense. Are the freed Taliban future terrorists? Who knows? They’ve been in prison for over a decade. They are “graybeards” now, and their world has changed dramatically. They are going to be held in Qatar for a year. All the fulmination about the threat they pose is simply political posturing. No one really knows. What we can expect is that they will be under close watch. According to military reports, Sgt. Bergdahl is too emotionally unstable to return home yet. Clearly he was under acute mental stress five years ago when he essentially committed a suicidal act -- leaving a base to go into hostile territory in Paktika Province alone and unarmed.

If he was unstable, he wasn’t alone. According to a military study at the time, more than one in five soldiers and marines in Afghanistan in 2009 were suffering from acute stress, depression and or anxiety. Bergdahl had apparently gone AWOL before, but nothing was done to remove him from his post or to deal with his stress. Serving in an outpost in a strange land under the constant threat of death puts brutal pressure on everyone. Some hold up better than others. Some act out in different ways than others. Those of us who have not been there should be the last to judge or to condemn. Secretary of State John Kerry, a Vietnam veteran, got it right when he said it would be “offensive and incomprehensible to consciously leave an American behind, no matter what.” We should be proud of that tradition, not sacrifice it to partisan politics or Senatorial privilege. HoustonISD Students Say Bye to Textbooks Homeless Initiative Gets More Assistance

ayor Anise Parker is getting some additional help with her homeless elimination initiative. Through a partnership with the Knowles-Temenos Place Apartments, more of Houston’s homeless population is getting off the streets. A fully furnished apartment with stove and laundry facility is provided to persons in need for $450 a month. Coupled with the services of provided by the Bread of Life, homeless individuals are given the needed boost to help them get off the streets permanently. The accident critically injured Morgan and killed Morgan’s mentor and friend James McNair and injured two other passengers. Roper appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to death by auto and assault by auto charges. He is now out on a $500,00 bond. Morgan, still in critical condition, is being taken care of at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital suffering from broken ribs, nose, leg, and femur. arris County Judge Ed Emmett, having served as the elected chief executive of America’s third largest county and Texas’ largest county since 2007, was the top vote getter throughout the county in his last election. As one of the country’s top leaders in public management, he came to the Houston Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Monday to speak on Leadership. “Leadership is about getting different people behind you to get good things done for the most number of people,” said the 64-year-old businessman that in 1978 at age 29 was elected to the Texas House from a district covering most of east Harris County. Every morning, the breeze from the gulf woke everyone up, telling them it was time to start the day in the fields beneath the hot Texas sun. Just like every other day, it was time to work and work some more – but there was one day when everything was different, though nobody knew it at first. And then someone told someone else on the edge of the gulf. And that someone took the word to town, and told friends. The friends were so happy that they spread the message around the country. The news was like a wave in the ocean and pretty soon, everyone in the fields knew – and they were happy. They knew that “a Union general had read from a balcony” that everyone was free – not just now, but “forever.” From that minute forward, nothing would be like it was the day before. Everything would “be all different now.” People sang their happiness with faces raised. Others – those who didn’t think they’d ever

see it – cried tears of joy. Some could hardly believe that day had come and they “whispered things” to one another. Since nobody was being forced to work in the fields that day, they all went to the beach for a picnic by the water. Even the sand was changed. Dancing felt new. Food tasted different for those who were free for the first time. Even stories sounded

sweeter. And at the end of the day, it was especially nice to walk next to cotton fields that didn’t demand work. Roman Martinez Cares About People Most in the Taxi Industry

oman Martinez lives for taxis. A former politician, he is a businessman who does his job, the President of Texas Taxi Inc, the parent of Yellow Cab, like he is still a community activist. Although he grew up in Houston, Martinez said that it was not until his time at Yale University that he got involved. “I was admitted to Yale as premed. I thought I was going to be a doctor,” he said, chuckling. “But I caught the political bug in college.” Over the following years, this political bug guided Martinez into work with State Representatives, the State Comptroller and even into him holding a seat in the Legislature for a decade, from 1983 to 1993. During that time, he saw firsthand the many ways in which his community would be neglected by the powers-to-be in both Houston and Austin. Accordingly, Martinez decided to do something about it and, while still serving in the Legislature, he founded Fiesta Cab. Contrary to common misconception, the red, green and white cabs are not affiliated with the popular grocery store, though Martinez noted that he even went to the stores’ owners to ensure an an an amicable relationship between the two companies would be guaranteed. Martinez explained that Fiesta Cab was designed as a transportation company that would specifically reach out to the typically underserviced Spanish-speaking community. He strived to recruit bilingual drivers and sent them

into novel neighborhoods throughout the town. Most importantly, he said, the company abided by existing regulations when entering the marketplace. “We went through the whole process,” Martinez said. “We played by the rules. We grew honestly throughout our years.” And grow they did. Within just a few years, Fiesta Cab had expanded exponentially and was soon bought by Yellow Cab, the largest taxi company in Houston. Then the two were consolidated under outside owners, first Coach USA, then Stagecoach. In both capacities, Martinez was brought on to lead the corporations. Finally, in 2003, a group of Taxi investors put together a new holding company to look over this plethora of taxi companies in Austin, Houston and San Antonio. Since 2009, Martinez has served as the company’s President. In Houston, Texas Taxi oversees the Greater Houston Transportation Company, which contracts with drivers of Yellow Cab, Fiesta Cab, United Cab, Greater Houston Airport Taxi and Towne Car. Martinez explained that each of these services provide a distinct service to the community. While Fiesta Cab, as previously explained, primarily services a need in the Spanish-speaking community, United Cab is used throughout the Midtown and Montrose communities, where brand loyalty is much stronger. The airport taxis service those leaving Intercontinental and Hobby by allowing customers to hail

the cabs from the curb, something not allowed except at airport terminals. The Towne Cars, finally, provide a luxury service —at the same price— in exchange for advanced notice and scheduling. However, Martinez is not content merely allowing these different companies to service the facets of the community by extending their business models into them. He works for his company to put its money where its mouth is, so to speak, and give back to the community in other ways. Yellow Cab is a backer of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, as well as the Houston Arts Alliance and Crime Stoppers, just to name a few. It also helps present the “Steps 4 Students” 5k run/walk with the Catholic Archdiocese and participates in the Race for the Cure, going so far as to paint some of their cabs pink for breast cancer awareness. However, Martinez says that the most integral part of the taxi conglomerate is how tight the relationships are between staff and independent contractor drivers. Employees mentor students at nearby schools, and scholarships for college are distributed, not only for the children of those affiliated with the companies, but for the employees and drivers themselves who want to continue their education. Fiesta Cab even puts on an event every winter, wherein Pancho Claus, a Tex-Mex Santa who moonlights as one of their drivers, distributes presents to children in the community.

“We’re more than just a money-making venture,” Martinez said. “We’re a staple of the community that wants to serve this city as a public utility. We pick up everybody, even those we take a loss on, because it is the right thing to do.” Many of these rides at a loss take the form of the economically disadvantaged or persons with disabilities hailing short-length trips. By law, they have to take all those who request transportation where they want to go, but they do not have to pay for expensive upgrades to make vehicles wheelchair accessible. Instead, Yellow Cab has chosen to do this. Now, Martinez is campaigning at City Hall to make sure all the large cab companies have to abide by these same regulations, ensuring that all the major players have to provide at least 10% of their fleet to be wheelchair accessible, among other concerns. He is also making sure that all new entrants into the market have to play by the rules, including proper background checks for drivers, robust insurance requirements and strict fare controls. For Martinez, all of this is central to the idea of taxis as a public utility. Ever since he started Fiesta Cab over 25 years ago, everything has always been about the people. The bottom lines are just as important as the people. Be it customers, independent contractor drivers or other employees, Martinez hopes to improve everyone’s lives, as well as giving back to the community.

The cologne is celebrating the history of the modern man. “Every girl I’ve asked about it is attracted to it and I think every guy would like that,” Parsons jokes. He describes the scent as being apart of Kenneth Cole’s life. It’s self-made, self-driven and a very confident scent. He could not stop raving about how great the cologne smelled. The cologne is supposed to be a blend of cardamom, tarragon leaf, ginger and pineapple, which mixes with cedar, vetiver and cinnamon to make a scent that is to die for. As Parsons made his way to the main stage, a sea of red Rockets fans swarmed him. His day was full of autographs and pictures as he helped promote

en are known to be strong and tough but put a child into their arms and they crumble. Just being called “daddy” could melt their heart in two seconds flat. Having a father is so vital in a child’s life. By the father’s example boys learn how to become men and girls learn how they should be treated. For some children having that father figure in their life is just nonexistent. Hence why adoption is so beautiful. It gives the opportunity for men who have the desire to be a dad but is challenge by the process due to infertility or other concerns a chance to be one. And those who have a genuine love for children to give all the love they can to as many children as they can. Houston Style Magazine honors adoptive fathers, men who vowed that nothing would stand in their way to be a dad.

Dorsey Reese, Jr. It just took seeing a friend with their recently adopted child for Dorsey Reese, Jr. to know he wanted to adopt a baby of his own with his wife Karen. Immediately he began researching the adoption process and became the father of a baby girl named Shannen. On his first Father’s Day as Shannen’s dad Reese remembers feeling proud to be part of the distinguish club of Fathers. Getting gifts was an unexpected bonus that hadn’t even crossed his mind. Just being Shannen’s dad was gift enough for him. “I was so proud. I had a huge smile on my face. I was filled with so much love,” said Reese. He finds it so sobering that his daughter’s very existence depended upon him. The thought of molding her into a good God-fearing human being was awe inspiring to him. “I am the only father she

knows. I am her teacher, her life guide. I am here to train her up in the way she should go. I am her support system,” said Reese. Now that Shannen is all grown up Reese is enjoying another realm of fatherhood, being a grandfather, or as his grandson will call him when he starts talking Pop Pop. He hopes to Dorsey Reese, Jr & Shannen Brown pass on the same principles of loving the Lord, being responsible for yourself and family, and getting a good education to his grandson that he passed to his daughter. Dwayne Bilton Already the father of two sons, Dwayne Bilton didn’t know the joy a daughter could bring to his life. But upon seeing the full of life Kelli at church one day sent his heart skipping a beat. “I loved her youthful enthusiasm and big smile,” said Bilton. That smile was something that Bilton just couldn’t resist. He said it instantly led him to spoil the little girl rotten causing an even bigger smile to spread across her face. Although Bilton never adopted Kelli in the formal sense of the official adoption process, he became her father under the authority of God. He is her Godfather, an honor that he takes just as seriously as being the father of his sons. “I am so proud

to be referred to as her daddy,” said Bilton. He has been a constant father figure in Kelli’s life since her biological dad was in the military and lived in another state. Where her real father could not be, Bilton was happy to step in acting as sort of a surrogate father to Kelli. Attending school career days, taking her on countless father/daughter dates, and just being there Kelli Walker & Dwayne Bilton since the pair met when Kelli was just 6 years old. As years past, the father and daughter bond has grown closer and closer to which the two are eternally grateful. “Our bond is as strong today as it was when she was a first grader,” exclaimed a proud Bilton. His guiding hand over Kelli’s life has allowed him the joy and the reward in being a valuable part of shaping the woman she is today and providing direction, mentorship and friendship. Bilton just loves kids. In addition to Kelli, he has other eight Godchildren. All of which get the same love and attention as his biological sons. He takes great pride in knowing that all his children are loved and know that they are loved. Houston Style Magazine wishes fathers everywhere a very Happy Father’s Day!

What You Should Know About Juneteenth By Erynn Haskins, Feature Writer

“

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States.” On June 19th 1865, the Union soldiers led by General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the American Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. This came two and a half years after then President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, but was unsuccessful in Texas due to lack of influence and enforcement of the new Executive Order. Reaction to the news ranged from shocked to joyous and triumphant, with many anxious to leave their ‘masters’ and plantation. Moving north was the logical option and symbolized true freedom for many. Others looking to reunite with family members headed for neighboring states Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The celebration of Juneteenth was a time for reassurance, prayer and gathering. Slaves and decendants continued to make an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston in honor of this date of freedom. Traditionally Juneteenth activities include playing baseball, fishing, and barbequing and rodeo activities. Many of these traditions are still exercised today. Education, prayer, and self-improvement were and still are heavily focused on during Juneteenth. Al Edwards, Houston native and former member of the Texas Legislature, is an advocate for the Juneteenth legacy. In 1979, Edwards founded Juneteenth U.S.A, an organization that celebrates 20 years of Juneteenth celebrations. Edwards is also best known as author and sponsor of House Bill 1016 making June 19th (Juneteenth) a state paid holiday in Texas. He is also Chairman of the Texas

Emancipation Juneteenth Cultural & Historical Commission (a state agency established in 1998 for the preservation of Juneteenth, and for the Juneteenth Memorial monument at the State Capitol). Today, Juneteenth continues to be a growing Texas tradition. Communities and organizations continue to celebrate the holiday and support its recognition. It is spreading nationally with institutions like the Smithsonian and Henry Ford Museum sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities. Many organizations have rose over the years with the mission to “promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.” According to Juneteenth.com, “Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous selfdevelopment and respect for all cultures. aving health insurance shouldn’t be considered a luxury in America. But for many it was. Some people were not getting it though their employer. Some just couldn’t plain afford the premiums while others didn’t even qualify to get coverage. Leaving millions of people uninsured and hanging in the balance. But that was before the Affordable Care Act. Before the barriers of preexisting conditions was removed and insurance for everyone became the norm. Even though Houston was home to the world famous Texas Medical Center and is one of the most progressive cities of America, one in every third Houstonian was uninsured. With the passage of the new law and health insurance becoming more accessible, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas knew they had to educate citizens on their options and make all the red tape make sense. Thus they launched the Be Covered Texas campaign to give families clearer understandings of the new health law and fulfilled their mission of having healthy communities. There effort has led to the outreach of 3.29 million Texans and counting. Another organization that keeps the health of people in mind is the Texas Black Expo (TBE). With a wider net they focused on the health of families’ bodies and the health of their wealth to grow stronger communities and inspire the next generation. Having similar goals, it was a natural fit for the Texas Black Expo and BCBSTX to partner. “BCBSTX truly believes in giving back to the communities we serve. We’re honored to sponsor the Texas Black Expo this year and welcome the opportunity to promote health and wellness with this audience,” said Preston Johnson, President of BCBSTX of Houston and Southeast Texas. Understanding that African Americans are at risk to a bevy of health disparities, BCBSTX’s goal is to raise awareness of Preston Johnson, Jr. these issues during the Texas Black Expo with their sponsorship. “We want the Houston community to know that BCBSTX is there for them through it all,” said Johnson. Efforts taken to educate the greater Houston community is all part of Johnson’s overall vision for Houston and Southeast Texas. “For me personally, our efforts here in this region will focus a great deal of our attention on a grassroots approach to reducing and eliminating the tide of childhood obesity, aggressive efforts to manage chronic illness like diabetes, heart disease, cardio pulmonary disease and other life altering medical conditions through leadership in health, wellness, providing total medical solutions and education of our citizens here,” said Johnson. The TBE and BCBSTX are together in this thought and that is why there are so many activities centered on healthy eating and exercise under TBE’s 2014 theme of “Healthy People. Healthy Communities.” The combination of the two could be just what the doctor ordered as preventative care measures. Connecting and giving of themselves to the communities in this way is just the way of life for BCBSTX. In fact, in 2013 employees clocked more than 17,000 volunteer hours in 61 communities raising an additional $62,600 in matching dollars all in the name of serving the communities that they work with. With a strong emphasis on empowerment, this year’s theme is “Healthy People, Healthy Communities,” and will feature a slew of prominent entrepreneurs and talent, with artists including DJ extraordinaire Kid Capri and East Coast legend Biz Markie. We recently got a chance to speak with another artist set to perform for TBE’s Black Friday Affair, Grammy Award winning and TGT member Tank as he spoke about his upcoming performance and what else he currently has in the works. Houston Style: So what made you want to lend your support to the event? Tank: I’ve actually been doing the Texas Black Expo since the beginning of my career. It’s always fun, it’s always educational, and you get to interact with your people. I love my Black

Houston Style: In addition to some of your more familiar work, your new album Stronger is also set to debut on July 8th, do you have a must hear track that you would suggest? Tank: Really this album it’s a new feeling for me. For those that know my music in the past, they’re going to hear and feel something different on this particular project. In the past, I’ve always been going through something, either cheated on someone or getting cheated on. Now I’m just happy. I’m past all of those things, and the tempo of Stronger reflects that. Houston Style: So if you had to choose a personal favorite of yours, what would it be? Tank: (laughs) “I don’t know it just depends on what I’m going through. But I would say that I love “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Houston Style: What do you feel is a common misconception that people have of you? Tank: I’m a lot more fun than my pictures lead on. It’s like I’m always trying to be the ultimate sexy man, it’s a part of my character but not all

Business success is all about your passion. Following what fuels your heart will bring life to all aspects of your being including your pocketbook. Sometimes that means taking risks. At the end of your life do you want to look back and be glad you took the risk or live with the thought that you never gave yourself the chance? The bigger risk is not following through on that opportunity. Hoffman’s philosophy is to live a life of purpose and passion not paycheck.

It can’t be your driver, said Hoffman. “Entrepreneurship is about being the master of your own fate.” Ask yourself “Why do you want to do this?” “What is it that you want for your life?” and “How can being an entrepreneur chart your own future?” This will give you a start to making a plan for your future. Next Hoffman’s says don’t miss the value of networking. “You can’t do this alone anyway. So from day one networking and building a team and creating resources and people that can help you and helping them back is an important step.” Establishing a successful business takes time. This concept might be hard for some to grasp in this age of, as Hoffman calls it, the America Idol nation. Simply put it means people don’t want to pay their dues they won’t instant gratification. Henson talks with Houston Style reporter MiMi LaRue about his new book Ain’t That the Truth and his quest to get Texans fit with his participation at the Texas Black Expo. Houston Style: We are so excited that you’re coming to Houston. What sparked the interest in participating at the Texas Black Expo? Darrin Henson: Thank you. I’ve been a long-time supporter and I’m glad to be coming to talk about being healthy and staying in shape, especially as we age. HS: You’re known to most people because of Soul Food. Is it a surprise when it’s revealed that you’ve got strong roots in choreography and

dance? DH: I don’t think people are surprised. So many have seen my work in videos and the DVD’s. HS: Fitness is a lifestyle. What message are you conveying with the Healthy People, Healthy Community session held during the expo? DH: We have a responsibility to take care of ourselves. We have to make wise choices and add physical activity to our daily routine. HS: Please share a few tips for eating clean or staying fit. DH: It’s important that folks move and stay active. That’s half the battle. I’d suggest cleaning up the diet too – something like grilled chicken, vegetables, rice and tea sweetened with brown sugar. Divas Are Taking the Spotlight to Empower at the TBE 2014

ith Houston being the fourth largest city in the United States, it’s no surprise we continuously host national and major events delivering big names and big entertainment. This month is no different, with the Texas Black Expo (Expo) bringing celebrity stardom and inspiration to our area with business, health and community events. Perfectly coinciding with the Juneteenth holiday, June 19 – 22 is sure to reach thousands of Houstonians at Texas’ largest African-American empowerment festival. One of the Expo’s most popular empowerment events is the Diva Dialogue Women’s Forum (Diva Dialogue) featuring a panel of dynamic women in media, entertainment and other professions. The Expo’s Diva Dialogue has always been highly anticipated and well attended. Diva Dialogue will continue to give attendees that unique up close and personal experience to have engaging conversation with accomplished women. Diva Dialogue is sought after by many because of the amazing women the Expo selects to be on the panel, but also because attendees walk away with knowledge and power to take their lives to the next level. Lyte, Sybil Wilkes and ReShonda Tate Billingsley. MC Lyte is unique as a female entertainer in that she has stayed relevant since breaking into the music scene in the 80s. Lyte is a history maker in the music industry who has broken barriers as a woman and she remains unstoppable. She continues to be considered one of hip-hop’s pioneer feminists. She is still making music moves, selling out venues across the country, while adding other titles to her already accomplished resume. Lyte is an actress, DJ, entertainer, philanthropist and an accomplished voice over talent. Not only is she one of the headliners for the Expo’s Old School Hip Hop and R&B Concert, she’s also one of the participant’s for this year’s Diva Dialogue. She credits God for allowing her to believe in the dream He has given her. Lyte continues her projects with Sunni Gyrl Inc., Hip Hop Sisters Network and BET. She is also looking forward to bringing television, film and music to the masses. She feels the Expo is important for the Houston community because of its programming benefitting attendees. Lyte continues to serve the community through her musical talents and empowering message of hope. Her participation in community based events is countless and at Diva Dialogue she hopes women and attendees will gain knowl-

edge and have a memorable experience. Lyte will be on the Diva Dialogue panel with a selfless spirit supporting her other sisters on the panel and in the audience. MC Lyte says her message at the Expo’s Diva Dialogue is, “Take care of yourself and love rules.” Radio maven Sybil Wilkes’ mother told her to always be honest and that’s exactly what she continues to bring to the Expo’s Diva Dialogue. For years Wilkes has been “the voice of reason” on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and she doesn’t take her success lightly. Wilkes went from unpaid internships to $300.00 every two weeks, basically living hand to mouth. She knows that even today in the entertainment industry, women sometimes still don’t make as much as men. In today’s society where people want success overnight, Wilkes says, “We learned that you had to pay your dues and we learned that from our parents and grandparents.” Even though she makes her craft on the microphone seem effortless, Wilkes works just as hard behind the scenes to create her media success. What she does is fueled by passion, not money or fame. She respects the media business because she started at the bottom and was willing to put in the work. Wilkes expressed that even though the word “diva” represented an admired and respected woman,

the definition unfortunately now represents a woman seeking attention. She says, “Unfortunately as African American women we have attained this title.” One of the efforts she is working on now is to change that mindset of African American women by reaching out to our young females and teaching them to be empowered while uplifting each other. The negative depiction of African American women on television is not a true representation of all and Wilkes’ initiative is vital. Sybil Wilkes’ participation in the Expo’s Diva Dialogue is one of the ways she spreads her essential message that encourages women to uplift one another. Expo Diva Dialogue panelist ReShonda Tate Billingsley may be known as an award-winning, national best-selling author, but there’s so much more behind this literary genius. On the path there was rejection, but Billingsley didn’t allow rejection to define her. She says, “I’ve never been one to wait on someone else to validate me, because their validation may never come.” With faith and courage, she created a publishing empire that produces literary gold. Billingsley is a shining example of walking on purpose and because of her writing talents, other doors have opened for her. Despite her accomplishments, she shares with women that there’s another side to all her success. There were sacri-

Senator Wendy Davis Wants to Win Texas Big

espite the downtown of her hometown Fort Worth being Texas’ center last weekend for 10,000 Republicans wearing badges blaring “Fighting to Keep Texas Red,” Texas State Senator Wendy Davis is excited and more encouraged everyday about her race to become Texas’ first Democratic Governor and its first woman Governor elected since Ann Richards won in 1990. “The Texas Republican Party State Convention came to the Fort Worth Arena and ratified a platform pledged not to issues important to Texas. It’s a document that disrespects Hispanics in particular and all Texans in general with its deafening attacks on Hispanic workers, students and especially women’s healthcare,” Senator Davis told Houston Style Magazine of her increasing motivation. “Texas needs a governor committed to all hard working Texas families and

not frivolously handing out hand-outs to country clubs and favorite companies or extreme special interests but interested in issues such as roads, water and education. Gov. Perry’s Texas Enterprise Fund hasn’t been audited. We’re told there is no money for roads, water or education in Texas but if our priorities were right we’d do the right thing,” said Senator Davis who is so committed to education. She said in 2011 she led a filibuster of a budget bill to protest and delay cutting of $4 billion from public education budget. Senator Davis doesn’t deter easily. She dropped out of University of Texas at Arlington to wait tables at a downtown sandwich shop but eventually got a job at a doctor’s office. That job led to a nurse suggesting junior college, which allowed her to get academic scholarships. She would later graduate at the top of her class at Texas Christian University. She went on to
