COMMENTARY

Our Democracy Depends On a Free and Fair Vote By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

I

Obama’s re-election year, Democrats won 1.4 million more votes across the country than Republicans in House races, yet the GOP won 33 more seats.

The fraud in North Carolina’s 9th District -- harvesting absentee ballots to pump up the Republican candidate’s votes -- was blatant and illegal. What’s undermining fair and free elections across the United States are laws and practices that are too often legal, designed to make voting more difficult for minorities and the poor, and to ensure that big money interests -- the wealthy, corporations -- speak louder.

Voter suppression laws spread after Barack Obama stunned the country by winning a majority of the vote and the presidency in 2008. This isn’t an accident. Republicans, limited by race-baiting political strategies, have turned into a whites-only party anchored in the South, while the country has grown increasingly diverse. Voter suppression -- as we saw most recently in the rule-rigging and egregious purging of the rolls in the Georgia governor’s race -- is the weapon of a minority party intent on sustaining its power. In 2016, these tactics surely helped elect Donald Trump. As Ari Berman has reported, an MIT study estimated that there were more than 1 million votes lost because eligible voters didn’t have the right ID or encountered long lines or couldn’t register. Trump won the election by a combined total of 78,000 votes in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

n North Carolina, the State Board of Elections has thrown out the election results in its 9th congressional district for fraudulent activity -- probably the first time in U.S. history this has happened. The fraud was committed by a campaign, not by voters, and by a Republican, not a Democrat. For years, Republicans have campaigned for voting restrictions claiming, as Donald Trump has repeatedly, that voter fraud is widespread. In fact, it’s not ineligible voters distorted election results, but rather the fraudulent efforts of an embattled Republican Party to rig the rules that has led to election irregularities.

Republicans have passed voter ID laws requiring voters to have a government-issued photo ID, which many minorities, students and the poor are less likely to have. They have drawn districts -- gerrymandering -- to pack Democratic constituents in one district, allowing Republicans to have a better shot at winning two or three. Right-

wing judges have ruled that corporations and the rich can give unlimited contributions -- without disclosure -- to dark money political operations. They combine these with a range of tricks and traps -- purging voter lists, making voter registration difficult, shutting down polling places for bogus reasons in minority areas, causing long lines and confusion, disenfranchising felons who have paid their debt to society but are still turned away from the ballot box, and more. Wisconsin under former Governor Scott Walker provided the model, courtesy of big money contributions from the billionaire Koch brothers and their network. In 2012, Barack Obama won Wisconsin by a margin of 7 percent. Democrats running for the state legislature won over 51 percent of the vote. But Republicans won 60 of 99 seats in the statehouse. At the national level, in 2012,

In 2018, though, even the rigged rules couldn’t save Republicans. Voters gave Democrats a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. It took the highest turnout -- over 50 percent -- in a nonpresidential election in over a century. Democrats won by the highest margin -- 53.4 percent to 44.8 percent -- ever recorded, and won 41 seats,

the largest number since 1974. The first order of business of the new Democratic House majority is H.R.1, the For the People Act of 2019, which contains sweeping election reform. H.R.1 would crack down on gerrymandering and reduce the influence of big money in congressional races. It would require dark money operations to disclose their donors and provide a federal matching program for small donations. It would institute nationwide automatic voter registration, Election Day registration, two weeks of early voting and limit purges of the voting rolls. It would also restore voting rights to ex-felons who have served their sentences. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, speaking of H.R.1, immediately announced, “That’s not going to go anywhere.” Until Democrats win a majority of the Senate and take back the White House, election reform will have to be fought at the state and local level. Politics shouldn’t be a game of beanbag toss. Our democracy depends upon protecting the right to vote and on ensuring that elections are as free and as fair as we can make them. It is a sad testament to how twisted Donald Trump’s Republican Party has become that it has made election reform a partisan issue and voter suppression central to its platform.

fenders aggressively worked to undermine Cohen’s credibility. Cohen’s dramatic public testimony before the House Oversight Committee ping-ponged between Democrats who walked Cohen through the actions Trump took and Republicans who challenged Cohen over his financial

crimes and past lies to Congress. Cohen’s public testimony Wednesday was undoubtedly a spectacle, but its ultimate impact will depend upon whether Cohen’s allegations are viewed as credible. Cohen’s hearing comes while the President has his own big moment: Cohen is testifying about what he says are Trump’s misdeeds while the President is in Vietnam meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Cohen also revealed that prosecutors in New York are investigating conversations between Trump and Cohen that occurred after Cohen’s office was searched by the FBI in April 2018. In his testimony, Cohen explained how Trump instructed him to pay $130,000 to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign for her silence about an alleged affair with Trump, which Trump denies. Trump then reimbursed Cohen as President for the payments, Cohen said — and he provided a copy of the check to show it. Cohen told the committee that there was “no doubt in his mind” that Trump knew he was paying Cohen for “hush money payments.” In his opening statement, Cohen launched a broadside against Trump, accusing him of being “a racist,” “a conman” and “a cheat.” Cohen also talked about how Trump dis-

cussed the Trump Tower Moscow project with him into the 2016 campaign — the topic that Cohen would ultimately lie to Congress about — and that Trump had knowledge of Stone’s efforts to reach out to WikiLeaks ahead of the release of hacked Democratic emails during the 2016 campaign. “The last time I appeared before Congress, I came to protect Mr. Trump. Today I am here to tell the truth about Mr. Trump,” Cohen said. Republicans attack Cohen’s credibility Republicans pressed Cohen repeatedly on the crimes he pleaded guilty to, arguing he had no credibility having previously lied to Congress and that his own financial crimes — which he pleaded guilty to along with the campaign finance violations — had nothing to do with Trump. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the top Republican on the Oversight Committee, accused Cohen of turning against Trump after he did not get a job at the White House. “You wanted to work in the White House, you didn’t get brought to the dance,” Jordan said. “I was extremely proud to be the personal attorney for the President of the United States of America. I did not want to go to the White House,” Cohen responded. Read the full story online at stylemagzine. com.

“The program will help hardworking families and individuals get on the path to achieve successful and sustainable homeownership.” To be eligible to reserve a $15,000 down payment assistance grant, annual incomes must not exceed 80 percent of the local area median income in Houston, which is about $59,900 for up to a family of four. In addition, there are special parameters for eligible military service members and veterans, teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians, who can earn up to 100 percent of the area median income, which is about $74,900 for up to a family of four in Houston, and may obtain $17,500 down payment assistance grants. Participating homebuyers can obtain mortgage financing from any participating lender. Approved homebuyers will have up to 60 days to finalize a contract to purchase a home in the city of Houston. “This innovative public-private collaboration will create more than 290 Houston homeowners,” said Lisa Hasegawa, western region vice president with NeighborWorks America. “The required homebuyer education classes provided by certified professionals better prepare NeighborhoodLIFT homebuyers to achieve their goal of sustainable homeownership.”

Report: White School Districts In Texas Have $830 More Per Student

HoustonPublicMedia.org exas school funding is getting a close look — and potentially major changes — from lawmakers in Austin this legislative session. And a new report from the nonprofit EdBuild has a striking number to add to that conversation: $23 billion. That’s how much more money it found predominantly white school districts across the country have compared to school districts that enroll mostly students of color. While the national gap was about $2,200 per student, Texas fared slightly better. EdBuild found that in Texas, white school districts get $830 more per student than nonwhite districts. One cause of that discrepancy is that a lot of school funding comes from local property taxes. The report also highlights how geography has kept school funding local. While the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that segregated public schools are unconstitutional, the nation’s highest court .

Approved homebuyers must be approved for home financing with an eligible lender and be in contract to purchase a home in the city of Houston. To reserve the full grant amount, participants buying a primary residence with the NeighborhoodLIFT program must commit to live in the home for five years. “We’re ready to help more families become homeowners with the support of NeighborhoodLIFT homebuyer education and down payment assistance,” said Mary Lawler, executive director of Avenue. “We are pleased to join Wells Fargo, NeighborWorks America and our local partners to make homeownership more affordable, achievable and sustainable.” In addition, Wells Fargo has committed $325,000 for up to 650 consumers to receive complimentary face-to-face homeownership counseling. Interested homebuyers can receive a voucher at the Houston NeighborhoodLIFT launch event that will provide in-person homeownership counseling at no charge with a participating HUD-approved housing counselor in Houston. The homeownership counseling grant program is a resource in addition to the homebuyer education required for a NeighborhoodLIFT down payment assistance grant. Kelly was indicted on 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse of four females, in which three were underage at the time of the assault. The judge assigned to the case described the accusations against him as “disturbing.” Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, pleaded guilty on his behalf. He claimed that Kelly is “an innocent man,” and that “all the women are lying.”

orkers in the Houston Metro Area have reported $1,240,029 in unpaid wages in the last twelve months, according to a new report from Faith and Justice Worker Center. Overall reported stolen wages were more than $103,000 per month. Most people impacted work in low-paying industries, and the average claim amount is almost $3,600. For workers earning a minimum wage, this figure represents 494 hours of stolen work, the equivalent of 3 months without pay, or 25% of their annual income. Last year, Faith and Justice Worker Center developed a labor abuse database to systematically collect data about how Houston’s working people are impacted by labor rights violations, including wage theft. FJWC’s findings for 2018 are comparable to a national study on wage theft conducted by the Economic Policy Institute in 2017, which found that an average worker loses $3,300 per year. ENTERTAINMENT TotallyRandie’s Texas 2-Step Guide to the Rodeo By TotallyRandie, Style Feature Writer

why the HLSR has a map just for you. Pick one up on the rodeo grounds or visit rodeohouston.com to plan out your day. Put the things you want to do the most at the top of your list so you won’t run out of time to dot them. Be extra prepared by arriving early to jumpstart your fun.

T

hat’s right, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) kicked off this week despite Houston’s gloomy weather. Each year hundreds of thousands from all over the world visit Houston for the food, fun, family oriented shows, concerts and more! But your hoot’n toot’n good time can quickly take a left turn simply with one wrong step. So, I’m here to make sure you 2-step thru the rodeo with ease with a few tips.

1. Plan to Succeed You all know the saying: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!” There’s so much to do at the rodeo, you can end up using all of your energy just walking around. The NRG Stadium is a really big place and you can end up getting lost. That’s

2. Bumper to Bumper! If you know you are going to a concert remember traffic is going to be ridiculous, especially on the night the most celebrated woman of Hip-Hop will perform, Cardi B. You might as well consider 610, 59 and 45 parking lots. To take the pressure off, use a rideshare or take the Metro rail. Also, find your seat before the concert starts to avoid “crowd frustration. It will be hard to avoid crowds all together; however, if you choose a day during the week, you are more than likely to avoid large crowds. Again, arriving early will be helpful to maneuver and avoid some frustration but pack your patience. 3 Give Me the Loot! The biggest mistake people make when attending the rodeo is not bringing enough cash. Yes, the rodeo is set up to take credit cards; however, again you can run into long lines. Skip the line by bringing cash. You want to make a bud-

get. I would budget about $15 dollars per food item, and $8 dollars per drink item. Avoid using the ATM onsite or around the area as excessive fees may apply. Secure your money in a safe place that is close to you to avoid getting pick-pocketed. Also, don’t flash your money around. Be safe and watchful. 4. Not My First Rodeo!

Take advantage of new attractions at the rodeo. If this isn’t your first rodeo there are a lot of new attractions and foods gracing the stage of the largest livestock show in the nation. For example, as you stroll toward NRG Arena and just before you reach the doors stands a new sweet treat vendor. The Float Saloon is one of the newest vendors at Ωserving a $7 ice cream float. Take your pick of Coca-Cola, Dreamsicle or even Root Beer floats. If you are seeking a thrill, just a short walk in the carnival’s

entrance reveals the Titan. At 17 stories high, it towers over most of the carnival and is the tallest thrill ride in the U.S. Reaching speeds of more than 60 miles per hour, you do not want to miss an opportunity to take a spin on this thrilling new ride. 5. Dress Comfozrtable This is not the time to wear your brand new cowboys boots or new shoes of any kind. The rodeo covers a massive area. Wear shoes that are comfortable and can go the distance. I also highly suggest wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Between the animals and their droppings, the food and their drippings, and the crowds and their dabbing, it could get messy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! 6. FUN, FUN, FUN! Finally, don’t come to the Rodeo looking for something, just be open-minded and ready for fun. That’s the true way to take in the experience in like a Texan! Celebrating with Spike Easily one of the most underappreciated directors, Spike Lee’s reaction to hearing his name as an Oscar winner and running to the stage to jump up on Samuel L. Jackson was simply hilarious. I don’t think Spike believe that the moment was actually happening and who could blame him. After being passed over for so many years, he might have thought winning an Oscar would never happen. He has been in the running several times most recently for his film “4 Little Girls.” And he did receive an honorary award in 2016. But when it comes to the Academy Awards you want to win outright. Sunday night Lee finally got his opportunity when he won for Best Adapted Screenplay for “BlackKkKlansman.” Lee could not leave the stage without giving us a lesson and a charge. He left us with this in his acceptance speech. “If we all connect with our ancestors, we will have love, wisdom, we will regain our humanity. It will be a powerful moment. The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let’s all mobilize. Let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let’s do the right thing! You know I had to get that in there!” We can’t move from talking about “BlacKkKlansman” without also speaking about another Black man, Kevin Willmott. And before you say, “Who?” wait. He is also a co-writer of the film. Willmott, Lee, David Rabinowitz, and Charlie Wachtel won the Adapted Screenplay Oscar for the film about a Black man who infiltrated the KKK while breaking down other barriers.

scenes and are getting noticed for it. Bravo to all of you. Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” was an engaging, entertaining, exciting movie due to a lot of elements and one shinning one was the costumes. Superhero films are just like that. Could you imagine the same film with T’Challa wearing a cap? Ruth Carter knew what she was doing. And that is why she is the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Costume Design. It is very fitting since “Black Panther” is also the first superhero film to be nominated for an Oscar. This is how you know all the elements of a film work and no one piece could exist without the others. While Carter’s costumes were giving eye-catching visuals, Beachler’s production design was putting those costumes in the right location, light, angles and so on. She walked away with an Oscar as the first Black person to win for Best Production Design. If that is not some #BlackGirlMagic right there! And wait before moving off the superhero kick one more Black person made history off a superhero movie. Peter Ramsey took home a gold statue as the first Black man to win for directing an animated film. He won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature for directing “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” He shares the Oscar with fellow directors Bob Persichetti, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller. Another Oscar for Ali Mahershala Ali, Denzel Washington, and Sidney Poitier now all have something in common. The three Black men all have two Oscars for their stellar acting careers. Ali joined the famed club of three when he cinched the golden statue for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dr. Don Shirley in “Green Book. ” Ali previously won an Academy Award in 2017 for the same category for his portrayal in Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight.” Washington won Academy gold for Best Supporting Actor in 1990 for the film “Glory” and Best Actor in 2002 for “Training Day.” While Poitier won Best Actor in 1964 for “Lillies of the Field.” His second Oscar came in the form of an honorary award in 2002. Sunday night at the Oscars was a great night for Blacks making it a great cap off to Black History Month but it was also a victory for other minorities as well. In addition, women really had an amazing night. More people are being invited to the stage to show the diversity in talent in Hollywood and in what is considered good. And you know what Oscar, it looks just like what flows all across America. Good job on getting it right.

FEATURE Judge Lina Hidalgo Commits to Harris County By Burt Levine, Style Political Writer

Judge Hidalgo lived in Peru and Mexico before emigrating in America in 2005. She quickly enrolled in school and graduated from high school in Katy ISD. She continued her studies at Stanford. And in the same year she became an American Citizen, she dedicated hundreds of hours to the Texas Civil Rights Project, a project to improve the conditions of migrant farm workers in the U.S., and worked as an interpreter at the Texas Medical Center where she supported immigrant families seeking security for loved ones. Judge Hidalgo then pursued a joint degree in law and public policy at New York University and Harvard University conducting research on criminal justice policy and coordinating with groups to push criminal justice reform.

In Smith, a young man with a diagnosis of major depression and symptoms of schizophrenia, as well as a history of suicide attempts, was held in the Harris County Jail and died by suicide. Her reasons for recusing herself in the Salcido suit is also because of her close, personal relationship with David James (her live-in boyfriend and a graduate of UT Law) who is an attorney at the Austin firm of Edwards Law. Edwards Law is counsel to some of the plaintiffs in Salcido.

As Harris County Judge, Hidalgo immediately impressed naysayers with her insistence on ethics standards unprecedented ever in Harris County history.

County Judge Lina Hildago

L

ina Hidalgo’s strikingly small figure and bright-eyed Latina looks caused political handicappers to dismiss her at 27-years-old for most of 2018. However, that happens no more around Harris County, where in her second month as the top elected official in America’s third largest county, Harris County Judge Hidalgo oversees a $4.1 billion budget that employs more than 17,000 people. “I sought this office because I want the American dream to exist for everyone across all Harris County and in this time when the White House is demonizing immigrants. I’m here to show all of this county, in this state, and country that we can be a welcome for immigrants, for all minorities in this majority minority county, and for women in this majority women county that come here from all over the world,” said Judge Hidalgo who were elected as the only at large member of Commissioners’ Court. She oversees the operations of a county that is the size of more than half the states in America. “I chair our County’s Juvenile Board, which oversees how children experience our justice system. I’m discussing with board members how to improve outcomes and fix what is, frankly, a broken system. How we treat our children matters. It defines who we are as a people,” she said.

Feb. 28 – Mar. 6, 2019

Hidalgo heralds Harris County as having grown with more new people calling it home every year of the last five years than any other Texas county. The county was the top magnet for new residents both from other Texas counties and from out of state. More than 10,100 people have moved to Harris County from California and more than 4,700 folks from Dallas County have packed up and moved down I-45 south here in the same time period. “Harris County includes more than 30 cities and 4.8 million people with more people outside the city limits than inside. We’re the city for them. It stretches across 1,700 square miles,” she said in her sprawling still undecorated office atop the county courthouse where this week she celebrated her birthday as the youngest, the first woman, and first minority elected county’s chief executive. “The Harris County Judge is not a judge but is our county’s top executive. To me only through proactive and creative leadership on issues like flood control, transportation, criminal justice reform, and health care access will our region remain among the most enviable destinations on earth for families to settle and educate their children,” she said remembering her parents were committed to a better life for their family as she is for all Harris County families. This is why her family left the drug-ravaged Colombia during the Civil War.

“As Harris County Judge, I’m committed to build a more transparent government. We’re launching a broad public engagement campaign, Talking Transition: Harris County, which are town hall meetings I host with Harris County Department heads in transition neighborhoods each Saturday. I work to include transparency in our initiatives,” she said.

County Judge Lina Hildago

“I further plan to recuse myself in Smith because I was a volunteer at the Texas Civil Rights Project while the litigation was developed and filed,” she said. “As I begin my new role, I’m taking two steps to ensure I’m building trust with the people of Harris County. First, I will recuse myself in matters before the county where a conflict of interest may exist. Whether or not recusal is required as a matter of law, I’d like there to be no legitimate question that I work for the best interests of the people of Harris County,” Judge Hildago said. She also refuses to take donations from vendors seeking business with the county.

County Judge Lina Hildago

Judge Hidalgo said she’s informed the County Attorney she will recuse herself from consideration, decisions, and updates regarding two lawsuits she was involved in at her work for criminal justice reform before winning County Judge. Those cases include Salcido, et al. v. Harris County, et al., Cause No. 4:15-cv-2155 (S.D. Tex., Houston Div.) and Smith v. Harris County, Cause No. 4:15-cv-cv-2226 (S.D. Tex., Houston Div.). In Salcido, a man suffering withdrawal died in jail shortly after being restrained face down on a gurney while warning he couldn’t breathe.

www.stylemagazine.com

She committed to all the duties of her job including the eight hours that she sometimes spends at County Commissioners’ Court. “Every citizen interested is invited to speak no matter how long the meetings now last late in the day and evening. I’ll meet with everyone at my town hall meetings,” Hidalgo continued. “It is recommended to call ahead to attend 10 am Tuesday’s court sessions.” Her meetings are the place it is to be on Tuesdays in Harris County. “With your incredible support, we won the election for Harris County Judge. Now together we will work to build a better future for all of us,” she said.

We don’t’ look at the best friend that takes off work to take us to the doctor when we aren’t feeling well and we’re afraid. We might dismiss the friend that we talk to every morning before we go to work and knows all our secrets. You might not look at them like a lover. You might not even admit how you feel for them or want to acknowledge that they arouse something in you. But they do. They know the pattern of your breathing when you’re sleeping. They know your moods and turn-offs. They know you. And isn’t that how love starts? Maybe soul mate makes it sound too deep. Let’s call them the person that simply knows you better than anyone and maybe even better than you know yourself. Being family and having the same blood doesn’t make you close. You can have a sister that you shared a

But the feelings that come with a soul mate are beyond our control. I’ve taken a break from writing because I needed to live life. I needed to love and travel and fail and make memories so my stories and thoughts feel new. What I’ve learned in this time is that I believed that we were all destined to find this one person that God created simply for us when the truth is most relationships are based on convenience and circumstances. The real love, the love that stands the test of time, is often the love that’s the most innocent, the most pure. It’s the love that is gets you and takes you in a way that makes you want to give and take, not keep score. If you have someone special in your life that you know is there for you, appreciate them. James Harden’s Historic Scoring Streak Comes To An End Against The Hawks By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor

doing it because that’s what we had to do in order to keep our heads above water. Now we get our full roster back. You look at the stat line and we had multiple guys in double figures, which is great to see. Hopefully, we can keep that up and like I said, catch a rhythm,” said Harden after the game when he was asked about the streak coming to an end.

James Harden

Y

vvou can’t guard James Harden oneon-one,” says Atlanta Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce. “He’s an elite talent with elite skills and it’s more about the work, make him work,” he says in his post-game press conference. The Houston Rockets defeated the Atlanta Hawks 119 – 111 at Toyota Center on Monday night (Feb. 25th) and although moral victories don’t go down in the win column. Atlanta put a halt to James Harden’s 30-plus point game streak at 32 games. With time winding down, Harden got the ball and dribbled across half court and did not even attempt a shot. He ended the game with 28 points. “That streak was great, but I was just

The reigning NBA MVP kept his team afloat when the team was dealing with a major injury bug. Without starting point guard Chris Paul (hamstring), backup shooting guard Eric Gordon (knee) and starting center Clint Capela (thumb), the Rockets were forced to lean on Harden more for scoring to stay in contention for a playoff spot in a very competitive Western Conference. During that 32-game span of scoring 30-plus points, Houston went 21-11 with Harden averaging 41.1 points per game, 7.6 rebounds, 7.4 assist, 5.7 3-pointers, and 2.2 steals. And to say that Houston needed every aspect of those stats to move from the bottom of the Western Conference to the 5th spot currently would be an understatement. By hitting 276 3-pointers this season, which is the fourth-high-

est single season total in NBA history, Harden is putting his name right back in contention for another MVP trophy. He is the current NBA leader in scoring at 36.5 points per game, which puts him in the conversation with one of the greatest of all times to ever do it. Over the last 40 years, the only other player to average more (37.1) was Michael Jordan in the 1986-87 season. It has been since last December that Harden had not hit the 30-point mark in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers who sit atop of the Rockets in the standings. What was more impressive was during the streak Harden went for at least 40 points 18 times and hit 50 on four occasions. The pinnacle of the streak was when the 2018 All-Star put up 61 points in the “Mecca” (Madison Square Garden) against the New York Knicks. It was also Harden’s career high. “Eventually, it was going to end one of these days and it just does. He’s unbelievable. He will start another one,” head coach Mike D’Antoni said after the game about the streak.

“Brown White Black: An American Family at the Intersection of Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Religion” by Nishta Mehra ©.2019, Picador $25.00 / $32.50 Canada 213 pages By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

olumn A or Column B? Truth is, you don’t fit in either. You’re unique, from your toes to your hair, inside and out. People can try to categorize you, but it just won’t work. As you’ll see in the new book “Brown White Black” by Nishta J. Mehra, there’s a lot to learn. One of her earliest memories still stings. Nishta Mehra was “about seven or eight years old” when she was shopping with her mother and a little boy called her the n-word. She cried then, not because she was Black but

btecause she wasn’t. As the child of parents from India, Mehra is “brown” but she “came of age not fully at home in either black or white spaces.” She was an only child with few other Indians nearby, and she had to blaze her own trails through whatever discomforts she might feel in social, religious, and cultural situations – something that was exacerbated when she went to college and she “realized that I was queer.” Today, Mehra’s life is “complicated.” Her internal narrative always included children but never a wedding. While in college, though, she met a white woman who became her professor, then her partner, then her wife. Nineteen years Mehra’s senior, Jill had assumed that she’d never have children, until the idea of adoption became so appealing that the two women carefully searched for a gay-friendly agency. Nine months later, they were the mothers of a Black baby boy. It takes a lot of restraint to continue

While so very valuable as an entry into the national conversation on the meaning of language and family, “Brown White Black” may also seem somewhat rant-like. Mehra makes many excellent points: in how she shouldn’t have to explain her life, her son’s life, his love of “girly” things, or her shorn head; on why she allows him certain freedoms; on having children, and the panoply of choices. But then, curiously, she questions the choices of others in childrearing, friend-making, and mundane things like “car sticker families,” focusing particularly on language (“words matter”) and seemingly refusing to allow for even the slightest of natural human awkwardness. “We’re making it up as we go,” says Mehra on gay marriage, and that’s a sentence to remember if you tackle this book. “Brown White Black” is certainly a thought-provoking look at modern American families but for some readers, it just won’t fit. HEALTH Democrats Divided On New Medicare For All Bill By Alex Rogers and Tami Luhby, CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire already begun to divide the party as its members propose what to do next.

Reps. Jayapal, Ocasio-Cortez, Underwood

D

emocratic Rep. Lauren Underwood was a kid in a swimming class when her heart began to race. She was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, which has since shaped her life in every way, from her preference for caffeine-free diet Coke to her career starting out as a registered nurse.

In 2017, when she saw her Illinois congressman, Republican Randy Hultgren, promise to protect those like her with preexisting conditions, but then later vote for a bill that would have increased their costs to get covered, a heart that sometimes beats too fast also gave her a reason to run for Congress.

14

Feb. 28 – Mar. 6, 2019

Democrats took the House in 2018 by campaigning against the Republican efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, tying personal stories to a larger narrative of protecting the coverage of millions of Americans. The strategy worked for Underwood, who won her exurban Chicago district in an upset. “A lot of these provisions impact me personally,” she told CNN last year. “I still don’t know how to tread water.” Yet while health care propelled the Democrats to success, the issue has

On Wednesday, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a Washington Democrat and the leader of the Progressive Caucus, and Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan will unveil the most significant single payer proposal in the House yet. It has the support of more than 100 members — many more than support less radical House bills that would permit states to create a Medicaid buy-in option or allow Americans at age 50 to buy into Medicare. It’s based off a bill by Sen. Bernie Sanders, who got other senators running for president — Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker — on board too. Nevertheless it has split the 235-member House Democratic caucus, and the vast majority of the new freshman class — roughly 75% — has not signed onto the Medicare for All bill. Some of those who haven’t co-sponsored the bill are freshmen Democrats from competitive districts like Underwood, Rep. Donna Shalala, the former Health and Human Services Secretary, and Rep. Colin Allred of Texas, who said in interviews that they are focused on fixing the Affordable Care Act and

www.stylemagazine.com

lowering the price of pharmaceuticals rather than a total overhaul of the health care system. Underwood told CNN that her priority in Congress is to “stabilize the Affordable Care Act and make sure it’s affordable for folks seeking coverage,” pointing out that there are 37,000 people in her district who use its marketplace. “I think it’s very clear that the American people are looking for lower premium prices, lower prescription drug prices, and higher quality coverage,” Underwood said. “There are many routes to achieving those goals.” When it comes to debating one of those routes — such as a government-run plan — she raises a host of questions. “How much is it going to cost?” she asked. “How are we going to pay for it? Who specifically it covers? What happens with private insurance? What happens to all types of coverage?” The bill introduced Wednesday aims to answer some of those questions, although not in regards to cost, which would likely run into the trillions of dollars.
