Commentary
The Poisoned Chalice By JESSE JACKSON Tribune Media Services
B
eware the stranger bearing gifts. Or as the law teaches, caveat emptor, buyer beware. Look before you leap. All these warnings apply to the emerging Republican positioning on the Voting Rights Act. Forty years ago, after the bloody march in Selma, Ala., Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which requires that states with a history of discrimination get preapproval from the Justice Department for any changes in their voting procedures. The reality of segregation and vote suppression required scrutiny of any changes to insure that they were not discriminatory in effect. This was a great victory for the movement that Dr. Martin Luther King led. Give us the vote, Dr. King taught, and we can begin to change America. And as African-Americans were able to register and vote and segregation slowly came to an end, a new South was created. The New South became a center of investment, which had redlined the segregated South. The New South became the home of presidents — Carter and Clinton — who would have found it impossible to be elected from a 1281-POHA-Comm-Style-041404 4/14/04 segregated region.
Politics changed, too. As Lyndon Johnson predicted when he signed the Voting Rights Act, Democrats paid a great price for being the party of progress. In the South, Republicans made themselves the party of white sanctuary. Jesse Helms and others taught them how to use racial fears to win campaigns. The current Republican majorities in the House and Senate are founded on the racial politics of the South. In 2007, the Voting Rights Act must be reauthorized. This requires congressional hearings on the evolving history of racial discrimination in the South. By demonstrating the reality that minorities still face discrimination — from voter intimidation, racially motivated redistricting, racially biased disqualification standards, racially biased distribution of voting machines and much more — Congress can re-establish the precedent for maintaining strict scrutiny over those states with a history of segregation and legalized discrimination. Will the Republican Congress reauthorize the Voting Rights Act? When asked in a meeting with the Black Caucus of the Congress, President Bush said he didnʼt know anything about the question. But as governor of Texas, he led one of the states covered by the Voting Rights Act and so he must have known what it entailed. Now some Republican leaders are suggesting that the law be made “national and 10:20 AM Page 1 permanent.” That sounds good. By making it
national, strict scrutiny will apply to all states. By making it permanent, the periodic battles over reauthorization will not be necessary. But beware. This plan, hatched in right-wing think tanks, sounds good, but is designed to gut the Voting Rights Act. By making it national and permanent, the Congress would set the act up for being ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Since the Act focuses on race, it requires strict scrutiny to make certain there is a rational basis for its provisions. If it is made national and permanent, divorced from the record of discrimination that requires special review, the act could well be deemed unconstitutional. Republicans will have used the Court to murder the Voting Rights Act while pretending to have clean hands. This maneuver is particularly disturbing given the current right-wing leadershipʼs desperate efforts to sustain their majority by fixing the game. Rep. Tom “the hammer” DeLay, the Republican majority leader in the House, trampled all precedent by forcing through off-year reapportionment in Texas to gain four seats in the House. Now Republican governors with legislative majorities are under instruction to do the same thing elsewhere. If they are prepared to break the tradition of reapportionment every 10 years to rig the rules, imagine what they will do if they can get rid of the Voting Rights Actʼs scrutiny. Weʼll be headed back to the days when blacks were
systematically denied the right to vote. If Republicans were serious about electoral reform, there is a simple alternative. Reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and maintain strict scrutiny on the states with a long history of race-based discrimination. Then pass a constitutional right-to-vote law for every American, making our Constitution as sensible as the election laws we helped write for Iraq. The states with a history of segregation would stay under scrutiny, and voting rights across the country would also gain greater protection. But Senate Majority leader Bill Frist of Tennessee and House Majority Tom DeLay of Texas oppose electoral reform. Instead, theyʼre maneuvering to use the courts to gut the Voting Rights Act. (And to insure the Courts go their way, they are ready to trample the rule of the Senate to pack the Courts with right-wing zealots.) President Bush is using his faith-based initiative to help purchase allies in the churches. Heʼd like to focus our attention on gay marriage and abortion, even as he attacks, first, affirmative action, and now voting rights. For African-Americans, this is the proverbial wolf in sheepʼs clothing. And weʼd better watch out or weʼll wake to find the wolf has made off with all of the rights that we fought so hard to achieve. Enfamil® Lipil® Awards Local Baby $25,000 College Scholarshiip
T
he maker of Enfamil® LIPIL® infant formula has awarded a $25,000 college scholarship to Jaliyah Trachelle Goff, 11 weeks old, of Humble, Texas. Jaliyah, daughter of LaQuitta Goff, is the latest recipient of the Enfamil LIPIL Formulas Scholarship Sweepstakes. As another example of its commitment to nourishing the potential of babies, the maker of Enfamil LIPIL infant formulas is providing new parents with the opportunity to win a $25,000 college scholarship or $1,000 savings bond for their baby. A total of 20 scholarships and 100 savings bonds will be awarded to babies born between August 31, 2003 and February 28, 2005. According to findings in the Enfamil LIPIL Smart Development Survey, eighty-eight percent of new moms feel that a college education is crucial to their childʼs ability to succeed later in life. However, only one third of moms surveyed are confident they will be able to afford the cost of tuition when the time comes. The ever-rising cost of a college education is a source of worry for many new parents. In fact, this concern is well-founded. Analysts estimate that by 2022, the average cost of one year at a public university will be more than $20,000.1 Now, with a little help from Enfamil, Jaliyah Trachelle Goff is off to a promising start. For more information log onto www.enfamil.com http://www.enfamil.com or call 1-800-BABY-123. To register for the Enfamil LIPIL Formulas Scholarship Sweepstakes, parents should request information from their hospital or pediatrician.

The U.N. Millennium Goals: A Promise To Change The World
By Marian Wright Edelman Special to Style Magazine
I
magine living in a world where the worst poverty and hunger had ended. Imagine that every child around the world, even in the poorest country or family, was able to go to school and receive an education—and girls were just as well-educated as boys. Imagine we could promise mothers everywhere that from now on they would be less likely to die during childbirth and their babies would be more likely to be born healthy and survive early childhood. Imagine health officials around the world making a joint commitment to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and other major diseases. Imagine a world where every country promised to find ways to protect the environmentʼs resources and make sure more people had access to clean, safe drinking water and living accommodations. And imagine a world where larger, wealthier countries committed to working together with smaller, poorer ones to create stronger economies around the globe. Does this sound like a utopia? Actually, this vision of the world isnʼt a fantasy at all. This is the vision that all 191 United Nations Member States have promised to
Page 6
create by the year 2015, by pledging to meet the U.N.ʼs Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Goals arenʼt just a set of nice ideals. As the U.N. explains it, “They are also basic human rights—the rights of each person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security as pledged in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the U.N. Millennium Declaration.” And leaders around the world have committed to reaching these goals because they know they are achievable. The first goal is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by cutting in half the proportion of people living on less than one dollar a day and the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. By achieving this goal, more than 500 million people would be lifted out of extreme poverty and more than 300 million would no longer go hungry. The second goal is ensuring universal primary education, making sure every boy and girl completes a full course of primary schooling. The third goal pledges to promote gender equality and empower women by eliminating gender
disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by the end of this year, and at all levels by 2015. When these two education goals are achieved, hundreds of millions more girls and women around the world will be able to go to school, giving them access to many new opportunities. The next two goals are to reduce by two-thirds the mortality rate of children under five years old, and to reduce by threefourths the maternal mortality rate. Together, those goals would save the lives of 30 million children and more than 2 million mothers. The sixth goal is to stop and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and the occurrence of malaria and other major diseases, a dramatic commitment to improving health and increasing life expectancy around the world, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The seventh goal would focus on making sustainable development a priority in country policies and programs, which would include reversing the loss of environmental resources, reducing by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water—meaning bringing
March 10 - March 16, 2005
safe water to 350 million peopleˇ—and achieving significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020. And the final Millennium Goal is to develop a global partnership for development, which would include strengthening fair trading and financial systems, debt relief, and giving more countries and people access to affordable essential drugs and important new technologies, especially information and communications technologies. These eight goals are all very big ideas. But itʼs thrilling to know the resources and technology exist to make all of these big ideas reality and that nations all over the world have already pledged to make this happen. The U.N. recently released a major new report on the specific steps countries need to be taking right now in order to reach the Millennium Goals. The promises are there. The practical roadmaps to realize them are there. Now every nation just needs to focus on living up to its promise. I hope the United States will lead the world in giving people the tools of life. David Stephen: Jaguar & Audi's First African-American Dealer
avid Stephens is the President and CEO of Stephens Automotive Group, headquartered in Plano, Texas. The group includes Millennium Motor Cars, which is the stateʼs top Jaguar dealership, the newly unveiled Millennium Audi of Houston, and Baytown Honda, among other automotive-related businesses. Stephens was Jaguarʼs first African-American dealer and recently became Audiʼs first African-American dealer. Stephens has more than 28 years of experience in the automotive industry, including 13 years at Ford Motor Company in various field sales management positions in Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Dallas. He left Ford in 1990 to join Pavilion Lincoln Mercury in Austin as a dealer candidate. In 1993, he made a strategic move to become the dealer principal and president of Falls Lincoln Mercury, a poorly performing dealership in an out-of-date facility. By the time of its sale in late 1999, Falls Lincoln Mercury, under Stephensʼ direction, had moved into a new facility and became one of the top-rated Lincoln Mercury dealerships in the country based on customer satisfaction and sales records. Stephens was the first automobile dealer to be named the Business Person of the Year by the Wichita Falls Bureau of Commerce and Industry. Stephensʼ leadership capability is evident by the fact that during Millenniumʼs first year in business, it became one of the top Jaguar dealers in North America based on sales. Stephens has been recognized by Ford, Jaguarʼs parent company, for repaying the total amount it had loaned to him prior to opening the dealership in five months—a factory record. The usual payback time is five to seven years.

David Stephens, President and CEO of Stephens Automotive Group
Stephensʼ “hands on” management style means that he is available to his employees and involved in all aspects of dealership operations, yet he also believes in delegating responsibility to the qualified individuals he has chosen to lead each department. He feels that a carefully selected combination of ideas and personalities in the dealership creates a better business and stronger sense of individual responsibility.
March 10 - March 16, 2005
A considerable amount of Stephensʼ time is dedicated to community involvement, and he is active in a number of organizations including the United Negro College Fund, the American Cancer Society and the Crystal Charity Ball. Stephens was selected to the Advisory Board of the Dallas Cattle Baronʼs Ball, which is the worldʼs largest single event fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Stephens, who resides in Plano, was appointed by thenGovernor George W. Bush, as a Regent to Midwestern State University. He serves as a Director of Parkway Bank N.A. in Plano and as a Director of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Industry service includes board positions on the Jaguar North America Dealer Operations Council, as well as the Ford Motor Minority Dealers Association (FMMDA), the Texas Automobile Dealersʼ Association (TADA) Legislative Committee, and the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD). David Stephens was selected from a group of 600 potential candidates as Black Enterprise Magazineʼs Automobile Dealer of the Year in 2001. In January 2005, Stephens added a new dealership, Millennium Audi of Houston, Texas to his group. He is delighted to be part of such high-growth area and will bring the Millennium brandʼs professionalism and quality customer service to the Houston area. Stephens is a graduate of Southern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He has five children.

Legal
A Chink in the Armor of Trial Lawyers Inc. By John Engler Special to Style Magazine
O
n February 18, President Bush signed into law the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005. This legislation is a victory for American workers and companies on several fronts, and itʼs worth taking a moment to reflect on its importance. The new law is a major step toward ending the jackpot justice that plagues our legal system. Large, national class-action cases will now be heard in federal courts as the founders intended, putting a welcome end to the abusive practice of “forum-shopping” for state courts predisposed to trial lawyersʼ interests. The legislation, strongly supported by the National Association of Manufacturers and the entire business community, also establishes a precedent with even broader implications: it shows that a unified business community can successfully take on “Trial Lawyers Inc.,” the politically powerful trial lawyersʼ lobby. Yet, itʼs imperative that Congress build on the momen-
tum from the class-action law and press ahead with critical asbestos, medical liability and other comprehensive legal reforms. High-quality, well-paying jobs are at stake as U.S. companies compete against foreign rivals. Our legal system is the most expensive tort system in the world, costing nearly $250 billion a year, or 2.23 percent of GDP, compared to less than 1 percent of GDP in Japan, France, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Trial lawyers rake in more than $40 billion annually, while manufacturers face ever-rising legal costs. Asbestos-liability legislation is urgently needed to fix a badly flawed system in which 57 cents of every dollar in asbestos claims goes to transaction costs – most of it to lawyers. The courts are inundated with lawsuits on behalf of workers exposed to asbestos, 95 percent of whom show no physical impairment, while the claims of the truly sick languish. Meanwhile, more than 70 companies have gone bankrupt, and 60,000 jobs have been permanently lost because of
looming uncertainty over asbestos liability. The NAM will also pursue other reforms, including a national “statute of repose,” standards for punitive damages, misuse-or-alteration defenses and other sensible reforms. Medical liability reform legislation is needed to reduce the downstream cost of medical litigation and medical liability insurance (the cost of both flows directly to consumers) and to reduce defensive medicine, which results in millions of dollars of unnecessary medical tests, all helping to increase the cost of health coverage. Finally, we need to ensure that we are confirming judges and electing judicial officers who understand that the role of the jurist is to interpret the law and the Constitution, not to legislate from the bench. Americans can be encouraged that the common good has prevailed over Trial Lawyerʼs Inc. on class-action reform. Now on to the next battle. For more information visit www.nam.org.

Movies
Christina Milian's Movie Debut in "Be Cool" By John Black Style Movie Writer
L
ike a lot of young pop stars, Christina Milian wants to be in the movies. Unlike a lot of her peers, though, who seem content to simply play a thinly disguised version of themselves in a mindless teen comedy - like Britney Spears in “Crossroads” - Milian wants to be taken seriously as an actress. The fact that her first major role is playing a rising young singer trying to find her way in the entertainment world in “Be Cool” is beside the point. “This movie gave me a lot of opportunities to do some cool things, like act with John Travolta and sing with Steven Tyler and Aerosmith in front of 30,000 people,” Milian said. “It was the chance to work with the director, F. Gary Gray than made me go after the part, though. I really enjoy what heʼs done and I wanted to work with him. It was everything I could hope for, too. From my first audition, Gary was directing me. Itʼs great to have a director that actually works well with the actors.” As great as it was to be working for the director who made “The Italian Job,” “Set It Off” and “Friday,” Milian said there was no way anybody could prepare her for the unique
Page 10
experience of acting opposite Vince Vaughn. “He is goofy,” she said. “Heʼs a lot of fun because he stays in character all day, on camera and off. In the movie he plays Raji, this sleazy agent type of guy, a white guy who acts like heʼs black. Vince had the whole accent and these pimp outfits heʼd wear all the time. So, in the middle of the day weʼd be at lunch or between scenes all of a sudden heʼs screaming at me like his character would to my character. I didnʼt know what to do. Eventually I caught on and got in character and I figured it would help him out and it actually inspired me.” Milian said she also found a lot if inspiration from her character, Linda Moon, a young woman - like herself - who is trying to find her way in the music business. “I think the thing I share most with the character is her passion for music and her ambition to make it her career. Our journeys have been similar, too. I moved from Maryland to California to pursue my acting and music career and I met a lot of these characters along the way,” she said. “Iʼve been offered the bad record deals that basically wanted me to sign away my life with my publishing rights, but luckily, I didnʼt sign them. My mother, Carmen Milian, is my manager and before
getting into music we actually educated ourselves about the business side of the music business so those things wouldnʼt happen.” Although it took her mother and her a while to learn the ins and outs of the record business, Milian said it was time well spent, particularly the time she spent in school studying things like accounting and management, things that may not seem important to somebody who just wants to sing, but that can make a difference between success and failure. “My advice to anyone is to have patience. Iʼve been doing this for 12 years, so I know you have to hang in there. And stay focused. I enjoy my fun time and everything like that but I love what I do. Thatʼs my fun time so, to me, doing my homework, studying on what I do, watching the movies, listening to music, all that inspires me so I focus a lot on that and practice. Even if I didnʼt have the money to take vocal lessons, Iʼd practice in the house by myself,” she explained. “I would also say to educate yourself on everything. I took college courses on music as a business, and Iʼm still educating myself by looking at albums and paying attention to who

produced this and whoʼs at the record label and hustling my way through it.”

In 1994, he received the Richard Pryor Comic of the Year Award from Black Entertainment Television. From 1997 through 2000, he traveled across the country as one of the headliners of the super successful Kings of Comedy Tour (the top-grossing comedy tour in history, earning more than $37 million), sharing the marquee with fellow comics Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Bernie Mac; the subsequent film, The Original Kings of Comedy, is based on that tour. Additionally, during the broadcast of the 2001 Super Bowl, a television viewing audience of more than 144 million witnessed Cedric nab the #1 commercial spot (“The Date”) for Anheuser-Buschʼs Bud Light and USA Today dubbed him “Madison Avenueʼs Most Valuable Player.” This commercial was the start of an ongoing presence in these popular commercials. Other big-screen credits include 1998 comedy Ride, Big Mommaʼs House, Kingdom Come co-starring Whoopi Goldberg and Serving Sara with Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley. Cedric can be heard as the voice of a zoo bear in Eddie Murphyʼs Dr. Dolittle 2 and also as the voice of “Carl the Rhino” in the hit animated feature Ice Age. Now helming his own production company, A Bird And A Bear Entertainment, Cedric will develop and produce feature films. Johnson Family Vacation was the first feature under the new company. Beyond his career success, Cedric has founded The Cedric The Entertainer Charitable Foundation, Inc., which contributes financial aid to inner city communities through scholarships and outreach programs to enhance the lives of youth and families in his hometown of St. Louis.
In addition to Revlon, other major sponsors include Novartis, Orbitz, Walgreenʼs, Ambien and Honda. Michael Levitt (TV Land Awards 2003 and 2004, Billboard Music Awards) serves as Executive Producer, Emmy-award winning Glenn Weiss as Director (2003 Tony Awards, Christmas in Washington, Star Search), Greg Sills as Supervising Producer (VH1 Divas, Billboard Music Awards), Michael Dempsey as Producer (Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration, mtvICON), and Sal Maniaci and Larry W. Jones also serve as Executive Producers. Now seen in over 85 million U.S. homes, TV Landʼs program mix features popular dramas, sitcoms, westerns, Retromercials and a TV-referential interstitial environment, all programmed with a specific audience in mind - the first generation of Americans to grow up watching television and features all-time Classic hits like “All in the Family,” “I Love Lucy,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “The Carol Burnett Show” and “Bonanza.” For more information log onto www.tvland.com.
Gerald Levert Cleared of Assault Lack of evidence leads to dropped charges.
G
erald Levert escaped charges of drunken driving, impeding traffic, obstructing police business and resisting arrest in Cleveland Wednesday after a prosecutor said there was no evidence of the singer causing serious physical harm to a policeman. As previously reported, Levert, 38, was arrested in his Cleveland hometown on Friday after the singer and a passenger in his car, James Austin Jr. of Canton, interfered with patrolmen Ronald W. Ross and Daniel Lentz after Levertʼs friend was pulled over for speeding. Ross said he injured his wrist during the confrontation with Levert, while Lentz said he hurt his shoulder while trying to contain Austin, who was charged with felonious assault for allegedly punching Lentz in the face. “If these officers were assaulted and injured as a result of that assault, there should have been a charge of assault on a police officer, a felony,” said Bob Beck, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmenʼs Association.

Detroit’s Material Girl, Gina Luster brings Total Indulgence to Houston By Cʼna Roberts Style Feature Writer
T
he true definition of a Material Girl according to Gina Luster: A Material Girl is someone who always re-events themselves, someone on the go, classy and not trashy, with the jeans and the stilettos today and tomorrow you may see her in a suit. Ladies if you fit the definition of a Material Girl, look no further because Gina can take care of all of your fashion and beauty nuances. Why the name Material Girl? “People use to always say, ʻOh, your so materialistic and that was the name that I was going to use but someone in the area opened up a store with that name. So I ended up with Material Girl, kind of a knock off of materialistic but a different twist on it. The name fit me and my lifestyle because at the time I was in Investment Banking, I worked in Corporate America and I was the

one you saw in a suit in the morning and in the I was in jeans and my favorite stilettos and of course the latest handbag. It kind of really fit into my lifestyle and my personality and at the end of the day it was a better name for the store,” said Gina. “Iʼve always had my own sense of style. I look at something and I say “If this had this on it…” or “If you change this, it would be really cute…” so Iʼm like a magazine junkie. If you look in my car, on the side of my bed itʼs always some type of magazine and itʼs not your mainstream magazine. I go to the bookstores and try to pick up the weirdest magazine that I can find sometimes and of course your Vogueʼs, Luckyʼs and Instyleʼs but a lot of my inspiration also comes from famous people and what they are wearing,” she said. How did Detroitʼs Material Girl settle in Houston? “I grew up in a town called Flint about 35 miles outside of Detroit…Detroit is known for clothing stores, thereʼs a clothing store on every corner and I wanted to take it to another level after I left Corporate America because I saw the need. I started looking to move because there are so many clothing stores there to where the business is saturated and I really could not make the money that I wanted to make,” she said. “A friend of mine that lives in Miami told me to check out Houston because she heard that it was going to be the new Atlanta. I came, I liked it and when I got off the airplane it reminded me of a mixture of Detroit and Atlanta. I started doing my homework on Houston and here I am. The cost of living is cheaper, itʼs a growing city and that is really the thing that brought me
Page 12
March 10 - March 16, 2005
here and the city has a need for the type of services that I am offering.” According to Gina, when she did her business plan she knew that she wanted to have a boutique that was personable with everyone that walked through the door. She decided that she was going to do something that caters to upscale women or even a Mom that doesnʼt have time to take care of herself. “I wanted to make sure this was something that catered to women that gives you the drive to take care of yourself. With that concept, I needed a space that was big enough to cater to women where they can get their hair done, if I need to roll clothing racks in or out I can, where they can get their feet done and get a massage. An all in one, one stop shop type of thing. I told my real estate agent that story and she was like I got he perfect place, its two stories and you can have people upstairs and no one will even know that they are there and I was like thatʼs perfect!” “The whole concept, Material Girl on the Go, is HOT! I opened up Fourth of July and I had all of the services for free at the Grand Opening so that people could have a taste of how it would be to have those services available, she said.” “I have really been concentrating now on the store, the clothes and just getting the stores name out there.” Before the one-year anniversary, we can expect to see the Material Girl on the Go Team in place, where Gina has an on-call hair stylist, on-call makeup artist, on-call masseuse and on-call manicurist and pedicurist to where if Janet Jackson comes into town at three in the morning these services can be provided to her. Gina has three recommendations for anyone going into their own business from her own personal experience. One – A person has to have passion for whatever the business is and be dedicated to it. Two – Get some help such as an Accountant, Attorney and Marketing Director these people are not just useful for your business but for networking purposes as well. Third – A good support team; whether itʼs your Mom or your boyfriend. “It is important that a person has an outlet to someone that is not in the business, someone that is on the outside looking in.” Be on the lookout for Material Girlʼs Spring Fashion Show featuring the designer of Sophisticated Bitch on April 10th from 6-8 p.m. free food and drinks located in the parking lot of Material Girl Boutique. Material Girl is located at 2630 Sage Road, you can e-mail Gina personally at gina@mboutique.com or log on to www.mgboutique.com.

When you use 1/2 cup of the new baking blend in place of 1 cup sugar, you will have results that have the same sweetness as a full sugar recipe as well as great texture and taste. Yet, youʼll have fewer calories and carbohydrates and often a “lighter” nutritional profile.

One-Third of Cancer Deaths Are Preventable in African-Americans
By M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Special to Style Magazine
A
pproximately one-third of the 63,110 African-American cancer deaths expected to occur in 2005 will be related to preventable factors including poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and being overweight or obese, according to American Cancer Society figures. February has been designated as National Cancer Prevention Month and The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is helping the public learn more about how to reduce cancer risks. This month gives cancer prevention experts an opportunity to heighten awareness of cancer prevention, including screening guidelines, risk factors, and risk-reduction strategies. Lifestyle Healthy lifestyle habits hold the key to cancer prevention. All of us can take steps toward a healthier lifestyle to reduce our risk for certain cancers. Many people think that cancer is inevitable, but for some types of cancer, you can take steps to reduce the risks. Being proactive in following cancer prevention guidelines and maintaining a healthy lifestyle by improving dietary choices, increasing physical activity, using sunscreen,
avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and staying away from tobacco may greatly reduce a person始s risk of developing certain cancers. Early Detection Early detection of cancer allows the opportunity to find and treat cancer at its earliest stages, when it is most treatable. According to the American Cancer Society, cancers that may be prevented or detected earlier by screening account for about half of all new cancer cases. Cancer screening, risk assessment and counseling programs are available in M. D. Anderson始s Cancer Prevention Center. Additionally, chemoprevention (preventing cancer with a pill) for high-risk individuals, nutrition counseling and tobacco cessation counseling are available, as well as genetic counseling and testing for those who may be at increased risk of cancer. Screening Chart Even if you are at a higher than average risk because of a family history of cancer, you can increase your chances of successful treatment by following the cancer screening recommendations that follow. These recommendations are provided as a guide. Discuss your own risks with your health care provider. He/she can best advise you on the screening exams that are right for you.
Cancer Screening Guidelines Colorectal Beginning at age 50, men and women should follow one of the examination schedules listed. * A colonoscopy every 10 years (preferred by M. D. Anderson) * A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) every year * A flexible sigmoidoscopy (FSIG) every five years * Annual FOBT and FSIG every five years. This combination is preferred over either annual FOBT or FSIG every five years, alone * A double-contrast barium enema every five years People at moderate or high risk for colorectal cancer (e.g., a strong family history) should talk with their doctor about the need for a different testing schedule. Prostate * Men should be counseled about the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening * Annual digital rectal exam beginning at age 50 * Annual prostate-specific antigen blood test beginning at age 50 * Begin screening at age 45 for men at increased risk (African-American men, men with a family history of prostate cancer)
Breast * Be familiar with your breasts so that you will notice any changes and report them to your doctor without delay. Breast self-exams are an option for increasing breast awareness. * Begin annual mammograms and clinical breast exams at age 40 * Clinical breast exam every one to three years from age 20 to 39 * Try to schedule clinical breast exam at the time of regularly scheduled mammogram * For women at increased risk of breast cancer, screening may begin earlier and/or may be required more frequently Cervical * Annual Pap test with pelvic exam beginning at age 18, or when sexual activity begins * Depending on risk factors, after three or more consecutive exams with normal findings, a physician and patient may choose to do them less frequently * Ask your doctor about screening after hysterectomy. Healthy women with normal Pap smears and whose hysterectomy was for benign disease may be screened less frequently than annually. For additional guidelines, visit www.mdanderson.org/screeningguidelines or www.mdanderson.org/publiceducation.

Kentucky Head Coach Orlando "Tubby" Smith Prepares for Another Championship Run
BY LEONARD MOON Style Sports Writer
W
ith the annual hysteria surrounding “March Madness” well under way, basketball junkies from near and far will have an opportunity to get their respective fixes with dozens of playoff games. The ride begins with conference playoff encounters to determine an automatic ticket to the prestigious NCAA Basketball Tournament. Smaller conferences such as the SWAC, Big South, MEAC and the like will send only a single representative. Larger conferences such as the Big East, SEC, Big 12, and the like will have several entities exposed to those hugh tournament payoffs. While scanning the NCAA Top 25 recently, it was somewhat alarming that the only team I recognized led by an African American head coach was the University of Kentucky. Of course, when one discusses college basketball concerning the “Bluegrass state”, you must begin with the man in charge of the beloved Wildcats and thatʼs Orlando “Tubby” Smith. Itʼs ironic that this particular institution is being led to great heights by an African American head coach, in that Kentucky basketball folklore was originated by one of the most staunches racist in team sports during his time. The legendary Adolph Rupp, deservedly so, is considered one of the best ever at his profession. He was one of the last coaches in the Southeastern Conference to
Page 18
recruit an African American basketball player in seven foot Tom Payne during the early 70ʼs. That was due largely to the revelation that occurred during the 1966 NCAA Tournament when Texas Western, led by Houstonian David Lattin, started five Black players and defeated the Rupp-led Kentucky Wildcats 72-65. Basketball evolution began to take place shortly afterwards in the Bluegrass state. Born the sixth of 17 children on a rural farm in High Point, Maryland, Smith arrived on the scene at Kentucky with a bang during the 1997-98 season. The Wildcats actually got off to a sluggish start, losing to Arizona early, and followed that up with three losses at Rupp Arena (their home venue). There were expected whispers circulating that Smith was “over his head” attempting to lead such a high profile program as the head coach. But once “Tubby Ball” was established, a system of solid defense and rebounding, combined with
his chess-match style of coaching, Kentuckyʼs fortunes took off. UK rebounded to win the 1998 SEC Tournament, resulting in a No. 2 seed in the South Region. Two tournament victories later, Duke stood in the way of a trip to the Final Four. This contest was big to UK fans in that it was the first opportunity for redemption since the Christian Laettner game-winning shot to win the 1992 NCAA Tournament. Duke was cruising along with a 17-point lead midway through the second half when Smith went to a smaller lineup to counter the quicker Duke players. The Cats stormed back to win 86-84 and eventually bested Stanford and Utah to win the national championship. Smith was named National Coach of the Year by Basketball Weekly and Co-SEC coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Any doubt that he belonged instantly evaporated. Since arriving in 1997, Smith has led Kentucky to four SEC crowns, five SEC tourna-
March 10 - March 16, 2005
ment titles, and five Sweet 16 finishes in addition to his national championship. The 53-year old coach has had 11 consecutive 20-win seasons, totaled 100 wins quicker than any other Wildcat coach other than Hall of Famer Adolph Rupp (in only 130 games and a tougher schedule), and has averaged 27 wins per season. Last season, Smith joined an exclusive club by winning his 300th victory in 13 seasons or less, joining the likes of Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim, and Nolan Richardson. Entering this season, his career record stood at 315-114, good for an impressive 73.4 winning percentage, and a sterling 24-10 NCAA Tournament slate. Prior to his arrival at Kentucky, he elevated an average Tulsa basketball program to two consecutive “Sweet 16ʼ appearances in 1994 and 95. From there, he moved on to the University of Georgia where he led the Bulldogs to a “Sweet 16ʼ appearance (his third consecutive) and a 21-10 record. The following season was his crowning moment in Athens, Ga. After losing eight seniors and all five starters, Smith led the youthful Dogs to a 24-9 record, equaling the most wins in school history. This season, Kentucky should enter the fray as a top five participant overall, and a regional top seed. Itʼs been long settled that Smith is not just a good Black coach; heʼs one of the best period.
