COMMENTARY
A Return to Diplomacy in Venezuela Needed By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
T
Assembly. The U.S. immediately recognized Guaido, and right-wing governments across the region did the same.
he United States is pushing for an overthrow of the government of Venezuela. The Trump administration has denounced Nicolas Maduro as a “dictator,” dismissing the 2018 election, which the opposition boycotted. Instead of a good neighbor policy or a policy of nonintervention, the Trump administration has set out intentionally to overthrow the regime. Long before Trump, the United States was a bitter opponent of the Hugo Chavez regime. The fact that Chavez was wildly popular and freely elected made no difference. He represented a revolution that embraced Castro’s Cuba and implemented plans to redistribute wealth and empower the poor. In 2002, when the Venezuelan military moved to overthrow Chavez, an official in the Bush administration reportedly met with the coup leaders. The coup attempt was frustrated, however, when Venezuelans rose up in mass against the plotters. Now with Chavez gone, the current president Nicolas Maduro unpopular, the economy a mess -- in significant degree because the price of oil is near record lows -- the Trump administration is apparently orchestrating another attempt. It has continued to ratchet up pressure.
It has imposed brutal sanctions on Venezuela, making a bad situation far worse, all the while blaming the government for the misery. Trump has openly threatened a “military option” for Venezuela. His bellicose national security adviser, John Bolton, boasted that “The troika of tyranny in this hemisphere -- Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua -- has finally met its match.” The New York Times reported that Trump administration officials met with Venezuelan military officers who were considering a coup attempt. Then, Juan Guaido, an obscure politician from a right-wing party, declared himself interim president, claiming that he had that right as head of the National
POLITICAL
F
Trump then named Elliott Abrams, infamous for committing perjury before Congress over the Iran-Contra fiasco, and for championing vicious military and paramilitary repression across Central America, as special envoy for Venezuela. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) pumped up demands for intervention, growing so rabid that he tweeted a gruesome picture of the murder of Libya’s Qaddafi as a prediction of Maduro’s fate. Bolton admitted that he was “in conversation with major American [oil] companies now,” stating that “it would make a difference if we could have American companies produce the oil in Venezuela. We both have a lot at stake here.” Now Venezuela has been hit with a power blackout, taking out electricity, phone service and internet. In Forbes Magazine, an expert details how easily this could be done by the U.S. in a cyber first strike. The U.S. has a long and shameful history of intervention in this hemisphere, too often aligning itself with rapacious

guilty, could not be pardoned by President Donald Trump, who only has power over federal cases. Manafort has not yet appeared in court for that case. Collusion not part of this case After the sentencing, Manafort’s attorney Kevin Downing criticized Jackson for what he perceived as hostility toward Manafort.
Appearing at his second sentencing in as many weeks, Manafort switched gears from the contentious approach he and his attorneys had taken previously and apologized, asking for lenience and no additional prison time so he could take care of his wife. Instead, the judge gave Manafort a full rebuke for his public posturing and his crimes before delivering the sentence.
Jackson ordered Manafort to serve an additional 43 months on federal conspiracy and obstruction charges, on top of a 47-month sentence he already received for financial convictions from a jury in Virginia.
Now Trump and his bellicose advisers seem intent on adding another chapter to this shameful history. There is another way. Instead of starving the Venezuelans into submission, we should be engaging with them. Instead of seeking to control their oil, we should recognize their national sovereignty. Instead of fanning coup attempts, we should be leading international negotiations to seek a diplomatic settlement that might lead to new elections.

ormer Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was sentenced Wednesday to a total of 7.5 years in federal prison for financial crimes stemming from twin cases from the special counsel’s office.
“There was no question this defendant knew better and he knew exactly what he was doing,” US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson said in the final minutes in court with Manafort Wednesday.
elites and the military against the vast majority. In the ‘50s, the CIA overthrew a popularly elected government in Guatemala. After the Cuban revolution, the U.S. launched an invasion, terrorist attacks, economic sabotage and boycott, and assassination attempts to get rid of Castro. In 1973, the U.S. embraced the brutal Chilean dictator Pinochet when he led the overthrow of the popularly elected government of Salvador Allende. As recent as 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton endorsed the overthrow of the elected government of Honduras, a disaster that has resulted in bands of desperate Hondurans seeking refuge in this country.
Yet throughout the hearing, Jackson gave credit to Manafort for pleading guilty and admitting to his crimes last fall, and made clear she was not judging Manafort as a person on the whole. She would not factor in the political hubbub around the high-profile case either, she said. Court Sketches from Paul Manafort Sentence

While some developments in Manafort’s case and at other Mueller sentencings have been surprising and dramatic, the proceeding Wednesday was low-key, though it covered a wide range of legal arguments. After almost two hours of discussion, Jackson took a break then returned to the bench. She methodically outlined how the case took shape, landing her sentence after she described how Manafort deceived the American public, and how secret lobbying on behalf of foreign governments in the US hurts democracy.
Mar. 14 – Mar. 20, 2019
Even after Manafort pleaded guilty and admitted to his crimes in September, he “backed away from the facts,” Jackson said. “What you were doing was lying to members of Congress and the American public,” she told Manafort. The biggest surprise came moments after the hearing adjourned, when the Manhattan district attorney revealed a new case against Manafort involving alleged business and mortgage fraud offenses in violation of New York state law -- a set of 16 charges for which, if he is found

She did, however, acknowledge Manafort’s work on the Trump campaign, saying he brought intelligence, “real structure” and skill to his most recent campaign work. Jackson noted several times during the hearing how Manafort’s case interplayed with Mueller’s investigation into Russian coordination with the Trump campaign in 2016 -- and how it did not. Collusion or conspiracy related to the election was “not presented in this case,” Jackson said Wednesday, “Therefore it was not resolved by this case ... one way or another.”

The Justice Department investigated Harris County polling locations in both 2014 and 2016. In each case, it found multiple sites with architectural barriers violating the ADA, ranging from steep curb ramps to locked gates. The settlement requires Harris County to re-survey all of its polling locations, in order to ensure the sites are accessible to voters with disabilities. According to the HPM, First Assistant County Attorney Robert Soard said Harris County and the Department of Justice will work together.
ouston Public Media reports that Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced murder charges against a man accused of killing 18-year-old student De’Lindsey Mack near Lamar High School last November. The man charged is Kendrick Johnson, 19, a member of the Houston gang called 103, which is active in the city’s Third Ward. Johnson is also charged with the murder of 24-year-old Kenneth Roberson on September 23, 2018. Ogg said in a news conference that “both murders were committed as part of an ongoing assault” by the 103 gang against another gang called Young Scott Block (YSB). Johnson is currently in jail awaiting a court hearing on unrelated charges for multiple aggravated robberies.
PRC reports up to 400 Houston firefighters could be laid off in order to implement the pay raises for Proposition B, according to the mayor’s office and several City Council members. In November, voters approved Proposition B, which allows for firefighters to be paid the same as Houston police officers. On Jan. 16, Mayor Sylvester Turner said he would be implementing the new law, but it would take some time. “We will move forward with Proposition B. We will define what parity is, but the city has never had a $100 million on an annualized basis set aside just to pay Proposition B,” said Turner. Firefighters are not happy with the progress.

TexasTribune.Org he University of Texas at Austin has placed Michael Center, its head coach for men’s tennis, on administrative leave after FBI documents revealed that he allegedly took a $100,000 bribe in 2015 to help a student gain admission to UT-Austin by adding him as a recruit to the tennis team. The documents said the student did not play competitive tennis. An indictment unsealed Tuesday in Boston named more than 50 people — including actors Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin — who are accused of paying bribes to ensure their children got into prestigious universities. Texas Tribune reports that Center has 72 hours to pay $5,000, or 10 percent of his $50,000 bond.

The University of Texas at Dallas’ favorite fund for jump-starting research at the state’s “emerging universities” also was a big winner, receiving more ongoing funding and a one-time infusion of money from the state’s rainy-day fund — mostly generated by energy-production taxes — to cover a backlog of projects. The House’s budget package, which envisions tapping more than $5 billion in rainy-day, has other big winners, including retired teachers, state workers — and Texas children.

Bills to exempt Texas from the time change are not new to the legislature, but the renewed push has gained momentum this session. With the “spring forward” time change that took effect on March 11, Texans switched to a “lighter later” and “darker earlier” day. House Bill 49 would keep Texas in Central Standard Time, which most people associate as lighter, “earlier” mornings. State Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, filed a resolution that would put the decision in the hands of Texas voters. According to Bettencourt, one of the justifications for keeping Daylight Saving Time is it reduces energy consumption.

Houston Rep. Al Green Will Push Another Impeachment Vote
DallasNews.com ep. Al Green has already forced two votes aimed at impeaching President Donald Trump. He declared that he will insist on a third such vote — despite the resistance of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi, D-Calif., told The Washington Post in an interview published Monday that impeachment would be “too divisive” and a bad idea, at least for now. The comments angered many progressives in her caucus.

Green wasted little time making clear that he won’t back down. He didn’t call out Pelosi directly, though the two of them have clashed repeatedly over the issue. “This Congress should have the opportunity to see where it stands on impeachment,” the Houston Democrat told a small group of reporters in his office, where a copy of historian Allan Lichtman’s book The Case for Impeachment was on a shelf behind his desk.
Measles Cases For 2019 Up To 10 In Texas

The 10th case is in an adult who visited Guadalupe County from the Philippines, where there is an ongoing measles outbreak, DSHS said. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness transmitted when an infected person coughs or sneezes the virus into the air, DSHS said. A person is contagious about four days before the rash appears. The best way to prevent getting sick is to be immunized with two doses of the measles vaccine, DSHS said. DSHS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend children receive one dose at 12 to 15 months of age and another at 4 to 6 years.

A study looked at who is exposed to fine particle pollution — responsible for about 100,000 American deaths a year — and how much different races are responsible for the pollution based on their buying, driving and living habits. Scientists calculate that Hispanics on average breathe in 63 percent more of the pollution that leads to heart and breathing deaths than they make. For African-Americans, the figure is 56 percent, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Non-Hispanic whites on average are exposed to 17 percent less air pollution than they make.

Boeing Stock Woes Worsen After the United States Grounds 737 Max Jets

Shares of Boeing, which had lost about 11%, or more than $28 billion in value, before the announcement, fell another 3% immediately after President Donald Trump announced the move from the White House. The shares then rebounded in a sign that the grounding had been largely priced in to Boeing’s stock. Walgreens and CVS Are 2019’s Stock Market Losers
By StatePoint It’s tax season. The time of year when phone scammers get particularly aggressive trying to trick you out of your hard-earned money. And scam calls and robocalls are a growing problem for everyone. Here are a few tricks to help you dodge scammers and give you peace of mind.

Scam call technology is always changing, so it’s important to stay vigilant against scammers’ attempts to get you to answer your phone. Every year, they make millions off innocent victims with new techniques. Their latest method, known as number-spoofing technology, could fool even the savviest consumers into answering the phone. Number-spoofing makes a scammer’s number appear as either a familiar number with a local area code or even come up on Caller ID as the “IRS.” If you don’t answer, they may also leave “urgent” callback voicemails via robo-

CVS has been an even bigger dud. Its stock has plunged nearly 15% year-to-date. The broader market is up more than 10% this year. Both chains are facing significant challenges, but for different reasons. Walgreens has been hit by a crackdown from the Food and Drug Administration, which said last week that it was putting the company “on notice” for selling more cigarettes to minors than any other drug store retailer. The FDA now wants to meet with Walgreens to discuss the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes to teens.

Check out what technology your wireless company offers that can protect you from scam and spoof calls. For example, T-Mobile offers free scam and spoofing protection for customers with Scam ID and Scam Block. These tools are made available to all postpaid customers and live on the T-Mobile network, so no app is required. As soon as a call reaches the network, it’s analyzed and if it’s scam, the incoming call is tagged as Scam Likely. If customers want to stop scam calls completely, they can turn on Scam Block. With these tools in place, in the last two years, T-Mobile has alerted customers to over 10 billion Scam Likely calls. And in 2019, T-Mobile reports warning customers of 225 million Scam Likely calls each week. Know Your Rights While scam-blocking technology can help you filter out scam and spoof calls, it’s also important to know your rights. Many of these calls use intimidation tactics to scare consumers into divulging sensitive information over the phone. The IRS website notes that they will always make attempts to reach you via postal mail first and they will never ask you for a specific form of payment. You should know that you always have the right to formally contest the amount owed, and the IRS will not make threats against you or your family regarding arrest or deportation. If you have any elderly or susceptible family members, talk to them about how to avoid such scams and consider setting them up with the latest technology to help them stay safe. This tax season, be wary about the calls that you receive. With up-to-date information and new technology, you can protect your pocketbook from scammers.

ordan Peele is up to his old tricks. The director of “Get Out” was in Austin, Texas on Friday to premiere his latest horror and psychological thriller, “Us.” The film, which opened the SXSW film festival, premiered to a packed house at the Paramount Theatre.
“What if I just showed four episodes of ‘This Is Us?’” Peele joked to the crowd. “This movie is about a lot of things... and, well, enjoy.” “Us” tells the story of family, led by Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, who are terrorized by their shadowy doubles.
The film garnered cheers and strong reviews on social media from those in the theater. “It should surprise no one that US is a very satisfying (and anxiety-inducing) follow up to GET OUT,” Eric Kohn, IndieWire’s chief critic tweeted. “What’s more fascinating: that a high-concept FUNNY GAMES/Hitchcock/Cronenberg/Bradbury mashup could feel so fresh at the same time.” Without giving away too many of the film’s spooky secrets, it explores topical themes of division. “We are at a time where we fear ‘the other,’” Peele said during a Q&A session after the screening. “I wanted to suggest that the monster has our face, maybe the evil is us,” he added. “Us” follows Peele’s 2017 directorial debut “Get Out,” which won the Oscar for best original screenplay, became a cultural phenomenon and grossed $255 million worldwide. If the reaction to “Us” at SXSW is any indication, Peele may have launched anothear hit. Universal’s “Us” releases in theaters on March 22.

ENTERTAINMENT A Novel Review of Before We Were Wicked By Eric Jerome Dickey By Demez White, Style Feature Writer

e talk a lot about 90’s R&B, about how much we miss music that’s the soundtrack of a generation. Words and beats that spoke to us in a way that transcended simply being a song. If Jodeci and SWV made songs that spoke to a generation then Eric Jerome Dickey made books that spoke to a generation.
“Before We Were Wicked” is a prequel to “Bad Men and Wicked Women.” It tells the story of Ken Swift and Jimi Lee and how one night of pleasure and passion changed both of their lives. In this novel, Eric does something that he started doing several novels ago, maybe starting with his Gideon series, maybe starting sooner. He combines the art of telling a love story with the grittiness of an action novel.
But like they say on the Godfather, “Once you’re hit by the thunderbolt, your life is never the same.”
These characters feel like people we know. These storylines feel like lives we are all living to some extent. The novel opens with the reader feeling the pulse of intense desire. A man knowing nothing about the woman he wants but being drawn to her by her sex appeal. A woman knowing the path she wants to take in life but being sucked in by the pure animalistic instinct of a man.
“Before We Were Wicked” touches on the love of family, honor, and money. Are women willing to bad things men do if they bring money home? Jimi Lee is until she isn’t. Can you ever get over regret?
While all of this chemistry is bubbling in front of our eyes you can see Ken Swift and his partner breaking toilet bowl seats over a man’s head that owes their boss money. The two men love women, violence, and dreaming. Dreaming about traveling the world and making more out of their lives.
Ken Swift and Jimi Lee are hit by the thunderbolt and what should be one night turns into five years. Five years of raising a child neither of them were ready for. Five years of family drama, cheating, lying and this idea that even through all of this life will be ok.
This novel isn’t an amazing story, it doesn’t take you on this crazy journey around the world. This novel is simply about a man and a woman and the crazy way love makes you feel.

Beyond the Rhetoric: How Evil Are We Becoming? By Harry C. Alford & Kay DeBow, National Political Writers
W
e must begin to wonder what is the condition of the mentality of America? That must be determined by the morals, customs and positions that we take on various cultural topics. Much of that can be guided through our spiritual interpretations. In other words, our behavior can be guided through our interpretation or degree of belief in the scriptures. Whether devout or casual our opinions or morals are guided through the degree of seriousness taken when it comes to following our formal principles. Resources such as the Bible, Koran, Torah, etc. help build upon our laws and customs (moral, ethical or legal). Our morals appear to be in jeopardy. Let’s take the subject of fidelity. Fidelity according to the Merriam Webster dictionary: The quality of being faithful to your husband, wife, or sexual partner.: the quality of being faithful or loyal to a country, organization, etc.: the degree to which something matches or copies something else. The opposite of this would be “philander”. The Cambridge definition of philander is: “A man who enjoys having sex with a lot of different women without becoming emotionally

violates all religions when you get right down to it. However, it is widespread through our daily lives and no one seems to cry “Foul!”. The above is an indictment on our culture. It is permeated throughout our daily lives and most of us tend to ignore or do nothing about it. So, when at least one presidential candidate not only finds nothing wrong with it she proposes the legalization of prostitution. We can’t make this up! Are we as a people being reduced to the acceptance of “moral debauchery”? When prostitution comes into our political debate, we have truly lost our religion. Selling your “fle erations ago.

O’Rourke, who is starting a three-day swing through eastern Iowa, announced his entrance into the race with a video Thursday morning.
His entrance into the race is the culmination of his two-year, out-of-nowhere rise from a back-bench congressman largely unknown outside El Paso to Democratic stardom as a record-breaking fundraiser, the subject of an HBO documentary and the target of two separate efforts to draft him into the presidential campaign. He joins a crowded field of more than a dozen Democrats vying for the party’s nomination.
“This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us,” the 46-year-old Democratic former congressman from Texas said in the video. “The challenges that we face right now, the interconnected crises in our economy, our democracy and our climate have never been greater.”

They are browner and blacker.” Speaking to reporters afterward, he also answered questions about what sets him apart from the Democratic field of presidential candidates, who he said he will not criticize.

H
ow would you like to save some money AND lose a few pounds at the same time? Just as change can add up to $20, $30 and $50 dollars, eating in between meals can add up to calories that add up to 10, 20 or 30 pounds!
Some people can quit things “cold,” and for others it takes time. Just as SAVING money can take time, LOSING pounds can take time. The concept of gradualism which refers to “proceeding or changing by steps or degrees,” is mentioned in most fitness or health books. Remember, we have to start somewhere. Personally, I went from a “4 meal a day meat-eater” to a becoming a “one meal a day vegetarian.” I gradually stopped
There is no mystery God, where” poof!” –things happen. There is a process for everything. Every action is preceded by a thought, sometimes it is a quick thought, but “if you dwell on it long enough, you may act on it.” How many of us have found ourselves at midnight thinking about a piece of pie left in the refrigerator? We continue thinking about the pie until we finally get up and go eat the rest of it. eating a heavy pancake breakfast to only eating fruit in the morning. This ALONE started saving me money. Think if you travel and eat a hot breakfast at a hotel, you are easily spending $12-15 on YOURSELF. However, if you only had coffee or a little fruit, think of how much you will save. If you are used to breakfast, consider replacing pancakes and waffles with bananas and apples and water. Bananas are a very fulfilling fruit that gives you a nice boost, unlike the heavy processed breakfast food we eat. You will get used to the “light” energetic feeling that fruit gives you in the morning, which will help pave the way for your one GOOD meal a day. Today, I always feel best when I
This is why we must continually guard our thoughts and feed and strengthen them with positive “life-giving” information. Many motivational books tell you that you have to first “see” what you want to “be.” How do you “become” something? Aren’t there steps? Yes. Is there a process? Absolutely! You have to start walking the walk and talking the talk beforehand. It is called “practice” (smile). What are some gradual steps we can take? First, pray God for guidance, resources and the strength to achieve your goals. Make up your MIND to be successful in improving your health. Ask for dedication, resources, and strength. former Navy Seal and “no excuse man,” David Goggins on Youtube. Second, write down your goals, long and short term and “action items” toward those goals. Third, write out for 3 days, a food diary. This will be a part of the self-examination and self-analysis process). (Sisters can use their How to Eat to Live Journal). I did this once and saw how much food I was eating. What was even worse was how much MONEY I was wasting! Ridiculous! I was spending about $30 ($5 a day, 6 days a week) on sweetened high-calorie coffee drinks. An extra $1-2 a day on a snack, almost $40 a week on items I don’t need. After cutting back some, I was able to use more of my money toward savings and charity. Make the necessary changes in your diet and save a dollar. A simple place to start is to limit what you buy and drink between meals. Replace “soda” with water and candy bars with fruit. Lastly, take time to plan and schedule exercise. Our Minister does it, why don’t we? It is time that we take responsibility to improve our health and build a community of healthy men, women, and children. Let us “get fit to live” as a community.

“You Can’t Go Wrong Doing Right : How a Child of Poverty Rose to the White House and Helped Change the World” by Robert J. Brown c.2019, Convergent $26.00 / $35.00 Canada 237 pages By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer
and raised them at a time when she and her husband should’ve been thinking about retirement. “We were raised in faith…” says Brown, and it was by example: nobody in need was ever turned away at Miss Nellie’s house, even though the Browns had little themselves. For Brown, that included medical care; he was a sickly child and because he couldn’t run or jump, he assumed a “role of peacemaker” instead.

“It’s funny,” he says, “how our childhood ways offer preview into our adult lives.”
Three words that are a shorthand reminder to be nice and treat people in the manner that you’d want to be treated. Do unto others and make life smoother. Be good, and be of service because, as Robert J. Brown reminds readers, “You Can’t Do Wrong Doing Right.” Almost from his moment of birth, “Bobby” Brown was the recipient of kindness: his mother was an impulsive teen who’d already had one son she didn’t want, so Brown’s grandmother took both boys in
You Can’t Go Wrong Doing Right, author
After graduation from high school,
Brown attempted college but his grandparents’ health pulled him back home, where he ultimately joined the police force. There, he scaled the department through undercover work, and caught the eye of officials at the Federal Bureau of Narcotics; they offered him a job in New York City. Brown’s wife loved it there, but for Brown, the Big Apple wasn’t home and besides, he’d been thinking of changing careers. He returned to High Point, North Carolina, and opened a PR firm, B&C Associates. This was during the early years of the Civil Rights movement, and opening a business was difficult for any Black man in the South. Brown had determined that his firm would stand on problem-solving and there was no bigger problem than Jim Crow, so he set his sights on working with corporations that needed his negotiating skills to avoid protests and boycotts. Emboldened by small successes, he ultimately requested a meeting with the head of Woolworth’s – and he got the job! Fifty-some years have passed since that time, so you can well imagine that there’s

As for the rest of the story, you’ll surely appreciate the quiet grace and faith that Brown offers in its telling. His stories of Martin Luther King, Richard Nixon, and Nelson Mandela are incredible, both in scope and in personality. Overall, this is a humble, gracious memoir that will speak to readers who love uncovering history, and to businesspeople needing inspiration. “You Can’t Go Wrong Doing Right” could be the exact right book for you. Wiley was erected in the heart of racism during the Civil Rights Movement. In fact, it was Wiley students that organized and participated in the first sit-ins in Texas. Wiley grad James L. Farmer, Jr. is known to have been one of the Big Four of the Civil Rights Movement that worked directly with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins, and Whitney M. Young Jr.
Huston-Tillotson University is the tale of two schools. The first is the story of Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute. George Jeffrey Tillotson and the American Missionary Society of Congregational Churches chartered the college in 1877 as a coeducational institution. Its doors officially open on January 17, 1881. For a brief period, it was a female only school from 19261935.
It was not until October 24, 1952, when the two colleges would merge to become Huston-Tillotson College. Later on February 28, 2005, the college would become the Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) we know today.
Indeed, what you’ll read inside “You Can’t Go Wrong Doing Right” isn’t your usual Civil Rights eyewitness report. As a business owner and a Black man, Brown had a one-of-a-kind position within the movement: it was his fight, too, but “Woolworth’s was my main client…” The tight balance he shares also keeps readers on their toes.
minister, medical missionary and educator. It was a good thing he was in the ministry because Wiley needed a lot of prayer when it was established.

The second story is that of Samuel Huston College. This college was developed from the 1876 Methodist Episcopal Conference and further established by the 1883 agreement with the Freedmen’s Aid Society. The society was responsible for organizing groups of teachers from the North toA come to South to teach at freedmen schools. Students were welcomed in 1900.

win streak as well. “We just didn’t play smart, simple as that. I think we let their guys get too many shots off,” said Rockets guard Chris Paul who had 24 points and six rebounds. “We say it all the time that in order to beat them regardless who’s playing, playing hard enough, isn’t enough. You’ve got to play smart,” Paul continued.
I
t’s not often that a game that starts at 8:30pm in the middle of the week will get so much attention, but then again this was no ordinary game. The Golden State Warriors were in town to take on a Houston Rockets team that has seemed to have their number this season. The reigning champs had lost three in a row to the Rockets coming into this game with Houston defeating them in Oracle 118112 last month without James Harden, who was out with a sore neck and flu-like symptoms. Golden State ended Houston’s season-best nine-game winning streak by defeating them 104 – 106a. They also stopped the Rockets five-game home
The Rockets came out with little to no energy in the first quarter as they only shot 36.8% from the field while the Warriors shot 58.3%. Golden State was led by a red-hot Stephen Curry who was 2-for-4 from three-point range while leading all scorers with 13 points. With the defensive intensity down, Chris Paul kept Houston afloat by scoring nine points. The lack of energy could have been from the Rockets playing their third game in four nights (Dallas, Charlotte, and Golden State). But Houston head coach Mike D’Antoni was not about to use that excuse on why the Rockets lost.

I mean it is, but it isn’t, said D’Antoni during the postgame press conference. “It’s too bad because we didn’t have practice to get ready for them due to the back-to-back games and we needed to give them a day off,” D’Antoni said reiterating that they don’t make excuses in Houston.

Houston dealt with two main issues that they could not recover from which was rebounding and the “Boogey Man,” Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins. The Rockets were outrebounded 44-31 and Cousins dominated the paint by scoring 27 points.
The Rockets have little time to recover from this loss as the young and vibrant Phoenix Suns roll into town tonight. Although their record of 16-53 doesn’t show it, the Suns are a team on the rise having beat the Milwaukee Bucks (1st in the East) and Golden State Warriors (1st in the West) in the span of a week. With just 14 games left in the season and playing to stay in contention for a number two spot in the Western Conference, Houston cannot afford to drop a game to an underachieving Suns team. Coach D’Antoni summed up the attitude the team needs to have down the stretch when he uttered one sentence in his post-game conference. “We just got to tighten it up.”

EAT WITH STYLE How to Create a Smoky Cubano Sandwich By Family Features
F
or flavor fans, there is nearly no better combo than the complementary tastes in a Cubano sandwich. Complete with layers of roast pork, ham, soft swiss cheese, mustard and topped with tangy pickles, all the flavors and textures play in concert. For an upgrade on the classic sandwich, try this version from Sammy Hagar, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who’s known for his riff on the iconic recipe. He takes his favorite sandwich to the next level by adding a smoky kick. “The Cubano has everything I love in a sandwich: gooey melted cheese and a crispy, crunchy crust on the bread,” Hagar said. “It’s great to be able to get all the flavors in each bite. It has pickles and mustard that cut through the rich cheese and pork. When you splash a little Tabasco on it, you get the last perfect ingredients – flavor and heat.” Find his signature sandwich at Sammy’s Beach Bar & Grill locations throughout the country, or try creating Sammy’s Cubano Sandwich at home with this recipe.
