Commentary
March Madness, May Sadness By JESSE JACKSON Tribune Media Services
M
arch madness. We witness young athletes in brilliant motion, doing the impossible under intense pressure. Nail-biting, overtime games; stirring comebacks; agonizing defeats. Network television broadcasts the show to millions across the world, with the high-gloss ads celebrating the great colleges involved. Too often, March madness is followed by May sadness. The players who star in March are often not there in May at graduation time. The proud mothers in the stands arenʼt present in the graduation ceremony. The celebrated colleges too often are failing their promise to provide a college education to young athletes. A recent study on the graduation rates of the NCAA menʼs and womenʼs Division 1 basketball teams by Dr. Richard Lapchick tells the story. Only one-third of the colleges in the NCAA tournament graduated 50 percent or more of their African-American basketball student-athletes. The disparity between white and black athletes was stark — with two-thirds of the schools graduating half or more of their white athletes. Many of the schools that advertise their
Page 4
proud tradition on television would hide their shameful record of graduations. Louisiana State University graduated zero percent of its athletes, white or black. Fans of the University of Kentucky who had to be proud of its double overtime battle with Michigan State would be embarrassed to know that only 8 percent of its basketball athletes graduated in the last four classes, and none of its African-American basketball players. Proud UCLA graduated all of 11 percent of its African-American players, a shameful record matched by the University of Arizona. White players tend to fare better. About two-thirds of the schools graduated half of their white ballplayers. But still, the graduation rates were stunningly low. Think about student athletes. These are kids who have the discipline to practice for hours. They have the intelligence to learn how to play as a team. They have the self-control to keep themselves out of trouble, despite massive temptations, and remain eligible. Yet, at the end of six years, too many leave without a degree from the school they have served so well. Whatʼs going on here? Clearly, a devilʼs bargain is being struck. The kids think they are going to be pros and focus their attention on basketball, not on the classroom. The colleges make millions off the programs and gain national recognition. The coaches garner big salaries. So they, too, focus on the court, not on
the classroom. Then the dreams of the kids are shattered, their chance at an education squandered. The colleges and coaches collect; the kids are discarded. As John Thompson proved at Georgetown University in its glorious days of national championships, failing students isnʼt necessary. Thompson made certain that his players knew the value of a good education. He hired tutors to stay on them to study and made certain they went to class and maintained their grades. His college athletes graduated. Some went pro; the vast majority went on to other careers, having benefited from the education that Thompson and Georgetown made certain they received. Georgetown isnʼt alone. Stanford graduated 86 percent of its African-American basketball players over the last four classes. The University of North Carolina, still in contention for the national title, is already a champion, having graduated 84 percent. If schools make it a priority, their student athletes can succeed. Womenʼs teams, incidentally, do much better. Three-fourths of womenʼs teams graduated over half of their African-American basketball players. But even on the womenʼs side, as the game has become more popular and the money involved exploded, the record of graduation has declined. It is time for those responsible to put a stop to the false promise, the foolʼs gold, being

waved in front of young athletes. The NCAA should make a simple demand. Every school allowed into the tournament needs a passing record off the court as well as a good record on the court. Schools that donʼt graduate half or more of their players shouldnʼt be allowed in the tournament. Consistent records of failure should lead to a loss of scholarships, since the school clearly isnʼt honoring its side of the bargain. And the networks that broadcast the games shouldnʼt simply play the public relations blurbs provided by the schools. Every game should highlight graduation rates: how many of the athletes, how many of the minorities, are graduating. Young players — and their parents — watching the games across the country will be informed by that information. Colleges that shortchange their young athletes should be penalized. They shouldnʼt be able to advertise their success on the court and hide their failure in the classroom. And they shouldnʼt be able to sustain athletic factories where the kids are exploited and then discarded without paying a penalty. Letʼs make the NCAA tournaments a contest between the colleges that honor their athletes on the court and in the classroom. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson care of this newspaper or by e-mail at jjackson@r ainbowpush.org.

This is a partnership between three institutions who are committed to improving the quality of science and math education in our nationʼs schools.” “Siemensʼ grant is critically important because it can help to address one of the most pressing needs facing our nationʼs children and that is the need for more teachers in math, science and engineering,” said Dwayne Ashley, CEO and President, Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. “All students deserve a sound, quality education that will set them on the road
to economic prosperity. This makes this grant unique for two reasons: There is a need for more qualified minority math and science teachers, and HBCUs have long been the training ground for new leaders in education as well as mathematicians, scientists and engineers.” “The growing shortage of qualified math and science teachers in this country will impact Americaʼs economy for years to come if it is not addressed,” said Dr. Michael Lomax, UNCFʼs President and CEO. “The Siemens Teacher Scholarships will allow more minority students to pursue careers in math and science, which will ultimately increase the nationʼs success in producing more qualified math and science teachers. Overall, support from organizations like the Siemens Foundation has helped UNCF support more minorities in higher education and we are excited to be a part of this scholarship program.” For more information visit www.thurgoodmarshallfund.org,www.si emens-foundation.org, www.uncf.org.

ohnnie Cochran, a stylish and masterly attorney who vaulted into national prominence with a closing argument in the O.J. Simpson murder trial that became a part of popular culture, died Tuesday afternoon. He was 67. He died of an inoperable brain tumor in his home in Los Angeles, according to family members. His most famous legal words: `If it doesnʼt fitʼ Cochran was a highly sought-after attorney, representing Black Panther leader Elmer “Geronimo” Pratt, former football star and actor Jim Brown, actor Todd Bridges, rappers Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg, and music tycoon Sean Combs. He was Michael Jacksonʼs lawyer in a 1993 molestation lawsuit, which was settled. In a statement, Rev. Jesse Jackson praised Cochran for changing the image of African-Americans in the world of law. “He raised the bar of…expectations for black lawyers around the country,” Jackson said. “He lifted the veil of inferiority for black lawyers.” Cochran is survived by his wife, Dale Mason; his son, Jonathan Cochran; and two daughters, Tiffany Cochran Edwards and Melodie Cochran. Although Cochran was considered anathema to police, his son became a California Highway Patrol officer--with his fatherʼs support.

GM To Host 10th Annual Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference
B
LACK ENTERPRISE announced today that General Motors will serve as host of the 10th annual Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference, marking the second consecutive year the worldʼs largest vehicle manufacturer has served as title sponsor. This yearʼs event, themed Seasons of Change: Taking Risks, Embracing Opportunities, will be held May 18--22, 2005, at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, and is expected to draw approximately 2,000 of the nationʼs top African American entrepreneurs and business leaders. “General Motorsʼ continued dedication to the Entrepreneurs Conference is further testament to the companyʼs dedication to the growth and development of black-owned businesses,” says Earl G. Graves Sr., chairman and publisher of BLACK ENTERPRISE. “Since the eventʼs inception, GM has been an integral part of the success of this conference.” “General Motors is pleased to partner with BLACK ENTERPRISE on an event that allows us to get further involved with entrepreneurs, businessmen, and women who are full of creative ideas and enthusiasm. These are the types of individuals with whom GM wants
GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner with BE Founder and Publisher Earl G. Graves Sr.
to do business,” says GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Rick Wagoner. “As a corporation, GM stresses the importance of valuing diversity as good business, and African Americans figure prominently into that equation, whether itʼs the billions of dollars in purchases from suppliers; the many employees who design, build, and market GM cars and trucks; or the dealers who sell our products.” For 35 years, BLACK ENTERPRISE has addressed the needs of the African American entrepreneur -- both in the pages of the award-winning magazine and through workshops and seminars for established and emerging businesses. BLACK
ENTERPRISE began its reporting of the be 100s in 1973 to highlight the nationʼs largest black-owned businesses. Motown Industries, the legendary music recording company founded by Berry Gordy, topped the list then with reported sales of $40 million. By 2004, the No. 1 be 100s Company, World Wide Technologies Inc., reported sales of over $1 billion. “Clearly, business ownership is a key component to building wealth,” says Graves. “African Americans have more access to start-up capital than ever before. The Entrepreneurs Conference seeks to encourage participants to view business ownership as an exciting option and to seize current financial opportunities. Simultaneously, the event maintains an advanced track for established entrepreneurs who seek to further their businesses by networking, strategizing, and gaining further knowledge about the essential tools needed to compete and thrive in todayʼs ultra competitive environment.” For more information and a complete schedule of events for the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference hosted by General Motors, visit www.blackenterprise.com.
Preparing Children to Be Business Owners
By Cassandra Black Special to Style Magazine ne of the fastest ways to build wealth in this coun try is starting a business. According to the Small Business Administration, there were ap proximately 22.9 million small businesses in the U.S. in 2002 and small businesses represented 99.7 percent of all employers. But many people in this day and age are simply trying to stay afloat in tough financial times and do not see entrepreneurship as a viable option. thor of the children‚s book I Want to Be an Entrepreneeeeeeeur When I Grow Up! (Blackberry Publishing, 2005) said, “Instead of asking my eleven year old son what he wants to be one day, I ask him what kind of business he wants to start one day.” “His thought process is already formed,” says Black. “Children are a blank slate. We can do so much towards building generational wealth by simply pointing our children in the direction of leadership.” The Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership poll found that nearly seven out of 10 youth (aged 14-19) across the board were interested in becoming entrepreneurs. The Gallup studies further show eight in 10 African American high school students are interested in starting a business. Yet, 85 percent of children responded they were taught little or nothing about how business and the economy work. There are many organiza-
tions, camps and classes designed specifically to teach youth about entrepreneurship. Through these organizations, children can learn how to write business plans, forecast, build websites, market, and prepare brochures, business letters, and more. BlackberryPublishing.com has a “Kidz Resources!” page on its website listing several such organizations. Ms. Black says, “My son gets an allowance, but he has to save fifty percent of it. He says, mom why do I have to give you half of my money? I tell him so when you graduate from college, when most of your buddies will be looking for an apartment to rent, you‚ll be looking for a fixer upper to buy. You can be the landlord collecting rent instead of paying rent.” We have to plant the seed, the idea, of owning a business so our children see it as a viable option, says Black. “Change begins with simply a thought process.”

Legal
Legal: Enterprising 101 By Kaylyn D. Nolen, Esq. Special to Style Magazine
DISCLAIMER This article is not intended as legal advice, but merely meant to open your eyes to some of the common and necessary considerations when opening a business. It is strongly advised that you consult with an attorney you trust when embarking on such a huge undertaking. WHAT BUSINESS TO START Starting your own business is time consuming and expensive. It needs to be something that you enjoy and really want to do. Look at your hobbies, leisure activities, and volunteer commitments. Ideally, you would want to start a business that combines what you love with what you are good at. Consider what your skills and experience are. Finally, give thought to the needs of the community. NAME YOUR BUSINESS Think of your target market and how to appeal to them. Image is important. Check the availability of the name within the state by calling 512-463-5555 or emailing corpinfo@sos.st.tx.us. Also check with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to see if your business name is a federally registered trademark at www.uspto.gov/tmdb/index.html.
Do not spend money doing business with a name only to find out that it belongs to someone else. The internet has changed the face of business; therefore, it is prudent to check the availability of your business name as a domain site. D/B/A If you do not do business using your legal name, then you will need to obtain a “doing business as” d/b/a. A d/b/a is inexpensive and can be obtained at the county clerkʼs office in the county where you intend to do business. If you incorporate your business (i.e forming a corporation or limited liability partnership) then a d/b/a is not necessary, but you must meet the stateʼs registration, filing, and formality requirements. SECRET TO SUCCESS Positive attitude and perseverance are very necessary, but these will get you nowhere with out planning and organization. A business plan will help you organize your business and allow you to present the major aspects of your business intelligently to others. A business plan is very necessary if you plan to seek funding from outside sources; whether it be a bank, the Small Business Administration (SBA), private investor, credit company, or the government. Through a business plan you will lay out your business location, goals,
costs, potential for success/market analysis, management team, and organizational strategy. CHOOSING HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR BUSINESS For the benefit of profits, profit sharing, financial support, and taxes you must carefully select how you will structure your business. Several common business entities include: sole proprietorship (easiest and cheapest, at most you will need a d/b/a), general partnership, limited liability partnership, limited liability corporation, C corporation, S corporation, and non-profit corporation. The advantages and disadvantages of each is something to give serious concern. Once you have mapped out the purpose, goals, and needs of your company, I encourage you to consult with an attorney to determine which business entity is right for you. GET HELP There are several well established organizations that offer a wealth of knowledge and assistance to entrepreneurs. SCORE is a national organization that counsels small businesses, and they have a local office. Visit www.score.org. Additionally, contact your local Chamber of Commerce, and the SBA. Queen Latifah: In the Beauty Shop
L
ike a lot of hip-hop artists, Queen Latifah has made the jump from music to movies. Unlike a lot of her peers, however, sheʼs been very successful at it, gathering everything from am Oscar-nomination for “Chicago” to nine Image Awards along the way. Sheʼs also been able to gather a legion of fans along the way - fans of all ages, races and ever other type you can imagine -- who line up to see their Queen whenever she makes a movie. And when asked for the secret to her success, the Queen knows who gets the credit. “The man upstairs,” she says, pointing a well-manicured finger towards heaven. “God has just blessed me beautifully. Heʼs put good people in my life. I mean, weʼve always had dreams in our hearts, but we also saw them as goals, not just dreams. And so how do we get there? Letʼs just go for it. And never be afraid.” The combination of spirituality and belief in herself and her friends has not only helped Queen Latifah make her way in the male-dominated world of Hip Hop, but it also helped her make the leap from music to films, breaking down a lot of barriers for other performers along the way. “I look at people as people. Nobody is better than me and nobody is worse than me. Iʼm not afraid to talk to anybody because theyʼre just another person to me,” she said. “So if I have an idea and I think itʼs a great

idea Iʼm going in to the room to sell you an idea I think is great. Iʼm not going in there thinking, ʻOh God, this is the president of so and so,ʼ because you know what? The president of so and so needs to give me this deal right quick.” Latifahʼs strong presence was a big reason why her new film, “Beauty Shop” was made in the first place. The character she plays, Gina Norris, was introduced to audiences last year in “Barbershop 2” and proved to be such a hit, particularly with the ladies in the audience, that the producers knew that had to give Latifah a movie of her own. “Gina was introduced in Barber Shop 2, but she wasnʼt really established. We didnʼt know who she really was. So now itʼs like, who is she? Who are we creating here? Whatʼs the story? What story are we going to tell?” Latifah said. “We wanted to have some fun with the idea that a person who builds her clientele in this exclusive, mostly white shop decides to open this shop thatʼs in the hood now and her clients

follow her because you know what? They need their hair done and you tend to follow your stylist.” “Ginaʼs a complicated woman. She has to work though all that stuff and raise a daughter at the same time and put food on the table and pay her bills. I think a lot of people - especially parents - can relate to what she is going through and with the way she handles her business to get whatʼs best for her family,” Latifah said. “I also wanted to create something for everybody who has ever had to deal with a boss whoʼs a jerk can relate to that, and how you really want to tell their ass off one good time and walk out the door. You know what I mean? So Iʼm doing it for everybody who really wants to do it. I got to do that one time in my life and I know how it felt. I quit Burger King. The manager disrespected me so I tore him a new one and I got out of there. OK, actually he said I was fired but…I tore into him anyway.” Latifahʼs attitude is refreshing, not only because it adds depth and humanity to her film - attributes that many of todayʼs comedies seem to have forgotten all about - but she also deserves credit for taking a stand and being willing to make a role model of herself and the characters she creates especially in this day and age when most celebrities deny such responsibilities toward their fans. “Thereʼs no greater reward than having a positive impact on somebody. I canʼt tell you how many times young girls have come up to me and said I look up to you and that I used to feel insecure about myself but looking at you and how you carry yourself has changed me. And I get grown women in their 40s and 50s
saying the same thing,” she said. “That kind of stuff makes you feel so rewarded. So I love this character. Gina is a woman to be respected, in my opinion. And I want to see this woman in front of the camera. I want to see her on screen because I donʼt see her all the time. “And not only do I want to see her, I want to see those other women in the shop, too,” Latifah continued. “I want to see that woman whoʼs having babies, but she never got married, and I want to see the one whoʼs kind of a playa. Youʼve got so many people to choose from. I really like this movie for those reasons. You might not be a Gina kind of girl. You might be more like [Keshia Knight Pulliamʼs] character and might want to hit the club and trick on it, get a few dollars spent on you. You might be that kind of girl. Thereʼs something for everyone in this thing and I really hope people do receive it in a positive wan and take some inspiration from it, feel good about it when they leave because it is that kind of movie.”

Fresh! Event to Introduce New Designer Tonshea Carroll
n Sunday, April 3, new local fashion designer, Tonshea Carroll, will be featured in “Fresh! A Springtime Event,” a unique fashion show and benefit, at the Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land. “Fresh!” will be the premiere of Tonshea Yvonne Designs and will also serve as a fundraiser for the Texas Childrenʼs Cancer Center. Also included in the event will be a live performance by Yvonne Washington and The Mix, preceded by a reception and silent auction. Fresh!” will be an exciting combination of fashion and fundraising that will center on a presentation of new fashions by up and coming designer, Tonshea Carroll. Although still new to the design scene, Tonshea will have completed over 50 original garments and 1000 sketches by the date of the show. She describes her creations as “feminine with a funky edge,” and strives to bring out an individualʼs personality and sense of style in her designs. Tonshea has been recognized locally for years, beginning in high school when she designed prom and homecoming dresses for herself and friends. Future plans for Tonshea Yvonne Designs include a boutique opening in the near future. Ms. Carroll is a former resident of
Missouri City, now residing in Sugar Land, who attended the University of Houston and is now finishing her degree in Fashion Design at Houston Community College. significant measure on the generosity and support of corporate philanthropists to carry out the life-saving work we do,” said Steve Allen, M.D. and CEO Memorial Hermann Childrenʼs Hospital. “Perryʼs donation and partnership represents the type of community spirit that ensures our programs will continue to provide leading-edge comprehensive care, clinical research and the latest technology.” Perryʼs Steakhouse & Grille, the restaurateurʼs fourth steakhouse and seventh Perryʼs concept restaurant to open in the Houston area, represents Perryʼs first venture into Northwest Houston. Located at 9730 Cypresswood Dr. in the Raveneaux
Office Park, the 12,500 square-foot restaurant will accommodate more than 400 people and feature seven private dining rooms, including Perryʼs signature wine tower room. Perryʼs signature, climate-controlled wine tower will stand approximately 26-feet tall and provide private dining for eight. Perryʼs Steakhouse & Grille will also feature a cocktail lounge and bar separate from the dining area and a partially covered outdoor patio. Perryʼs Steakhouse & Grille will boast personal wine lockers available for purchase annually, affording patrons the opportunity to acquire their favorite wines to have on hand during any visits, either for themselves, family guests or business associates. Along with the climate-controlled wine vault and exclusive wine list, the new restaurant also features a tableside chateaubriand, Perryʼs signature pork chop and flaming desserts. An exquisite Sunday jazz brunch will treat customers to a light, lively musical atmosphere. The live jazz also is played during Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Open seven days a week, Perryʼs Steakhouse & Grilleʼs Champions locationʼs hours are as follows: • Monday through Thursday – 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. • Friday – 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. • Saturday – 12 p.m. to 11 a.m. • Sunday – 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (live jazz brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

s one of Championʼs newest community members, Perryʼs Steakhouse & Grille will again partner with Memorial Hermann Childrenʼs Hospital by donating the restaurantʼs opening night proceeds. On Thursday, March 31, Perryʼs Steakhouse & Grille, the Houston-based, family-owned restaurant renowned for exceptional service, dining and casual elegance, will officially open its newest location in Champions near Hwy. 249 at the intersection of Cypresswood Dr. and Cutten Rd. That evening, Perryʼs will host “The Dinner of Champions,” a five-course meal with wine pairing for $100 per person with proceeds benefiting Memorial Hermann Childrenʼs Hospital. Memorial Hermann Childrenʼs Hospital, part of the not-for-profit Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and affiliated with UT-Medical School-Houston, plans to allocate the monies to its services and programs that meet the special medical needs of children. “As a father, children hold a special place in my heart, and partnering with Memorial Hermann Childrenʼs Hospital provided the perfect opportunity to give something back to the community,” said Chris Perry, president and CEO of Perryʼs. “With a new Perryʼs restaurant in Champions and seven throughout the greater Houston area, we look forward to building lasting relationships, not only with our customers, but with the community as3/25/05 well.” 2:16 PM Page 1 6002_krogr_HouStyl “As a not-for-profit childrenʼs hospital, we depend in

Christus First to Use BSGI Breast Cancer Technology Imaging Device Provides Improved Accuracy and Quicker Answers For Patients By CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital Special to Style Magazine
C
HRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital is the first hospital in the Houston area to use Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI), one of the most technologically advanced tools for breast cancer detection. BSGI, using the Dilon 6800, produces clearer and more concise images for women with questionable mammograms, helping doctors provide their patients with more accurate results and quicker answers than with many other types of diagnostic tests. BSGI can help detect cancers at very early stages allowing for optimal intervention and treatment and has the potential to significantly reduce the number of invasive biopsies that result in negative findings (no cancer present). “We want to answer as many questions as possible before taking a patient to the OR and BSGI is a great tool for avoiding unnecessary procedures such as breast biopsy,” said Dr. Peter de Ipolyi, surgical oncologist at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital. For patients, using the BSGI can mean the difference between a painless clinic test and a breast biopsy – an invasive, outpatient operative procedure. Jacquelyn Royce, a patient of Dr. de Ipolyiʼs, had undergone eight previous biopsies before her most recent mammogram. When Dr. de Ipolyi noted an irregularity in her images, he recommended Ms. Royce have BSGI screening. “The test was easier than a mammogram and because the results showed calcium deposits and not cancer, I avoided another painful biopsy,” said Ms. Royce. “The
BSGI test saved me time, worry and an unnecessary surgical procedure,” she added. “X-ray mammography is still the first-line screening tool for breast cancer, but there are cases where mammography cannot provide all the information we need,” explains Dr. Milton Guiberteau, director of nuclear medicine and Woman Care Diagnostic Services at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital. Mammography primarily measures differences in tissue density, but because dense tissue and cancers often have the same appearance on a mammogram, it may be difficult to distinguish a cancer from normal, but dense breast tissue. BSGI is not affected by tissue density. Working on a cellular or molecular level, BSGI helps differentiate cancer from benign (noncancerous) tissue in the breast. It is especially useful for patients who have dense breasts, lesions (lumps) that can be felt but not seen with mammogram or ultrasound, scar tissue or implants. “When I see a questionable mammogram, BSGI gives me an opportunity to learn more about the irregularity without immediately sending my patient for a biopsy,” said Dr. Guiberteau. Another major advantage of BSGI is that imaging occurs at the point of care, often allowing for same-day imaging and results and eliminating anxious waiting periods for patients. For more information about BSGI, call 713.757-7575. For more information about Woman Care at CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital visit www.christusstjoseph.org.
Fighting Airborne Allergies at Home By North American Precis Syndicate Special to Style Magazine

onʼt let dust mites take a bite out of your health. Washing your sheets and vacuuming regularly may be hallmarks of clean living, but even the most spotless home can be infested with microscopic, spiderlike organisms known as dust mites. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 45 percent of American homes, or approximately 44 million, have bedding with dust mite allergens that can cause allergies. Millions of dust mites thrive in mattresses, pillows, carpets and upholstery, where they feed on shed human skin and animal dander. To significantly reduce the number of allergy triggers, many allergists recommend the following tips: • Wash bed linens weekly in hot water, above 130 degrees Fahrenheit. • Vacuum regularly using HEPA filters. • Treat mattresses and pillows with a safe and effective allergen denaturing spray. A recent study presented at this yearʼs annual American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) meeting found that neem oil was a safe and effective treatment for controlling house dust mite allergens. The research, conducted by Dr. Heinz Rembold at the Max Planck Institute in Munich, Germany, provides evidence that sprays, specifically those containing a patented extract of neem found in the brand MITES OUT!, can have a significant long-term effect in controlling dust mite allergens, without the potential allergy-inducing side effects. Americans Put Money Where Their Heart Is: In Their Homes By North American Precis Syndicate Special to Style Magazine
M
ore Americans are homeowners than ever before and many are eager to improve their investment in their properties. According to a 2004 study by the Harvard University Joint Center for Housing Studies, Americans spent more than $129 billion on remodeling through September 2004, up 3 percent from the total for 2003. Another national survey found more than half of all homeowners made home improvements in the past year or will in the coming one. What drives this desire for home improvement? There are two reasons: quality of life is one; the other is that there are more old homes on the market. According to a survey conducted by Wells Fargo, a large number of homeowners said they make home improvements to enhance their personal enjoyment rather than for financial gain. Seventy percent indicated that making the home more comfortable and attractive was their main
www.stylemagazine.com
reason for home improvements, compared to only 29 percent who cited increasing their homeʼs resale value. Meanwhile, the U.S. Census says more than 67 percent of the nationʼs housing stock is now at least 25 years old, making the need to consider a renovation a reality for many. “As Americaʼs housing stock ages, the ability to obtain financing for home improvement and renovation projects will become increasingly important to consumers,” said John Sway, national renovation lending manager for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. “With the proper planning and education on the new home financing products available, homebuyers and homeowners can make these improvements.” Recently, a number of new financing options have come on the market to help consumers “own it-and then make it their own,” said Sway. For example, Wells Fargo offers the Home Asset Management Account in many places. With a one-time processing and approval, this product offers a com-
bined first home mortgage and home equity line of credit in an all-inclusive package that enables customers to both finance their home and conveniently access their available equity as needed. As payments are made toward the mortgage principal and as the homeʼs value is estimated to increase, the amount of available equity on the line of credit may be increased without the need to reapply. This means ready access to more funds for home improvement or other projects. For consumers contemplating a major home renovation, there are loans developed specifically for that purpose. These renovation loans offer the ability to lock into a competitive interest rate, potential tax deductibility (a tax advisor should be consulted regarding tax deductibility) and qualification based on the value of the home after improvements. That means homeowners may be able to get a larger amount than available through traditional financing options. For more information, visit www.wellsfargo.com or call 1-800-2223408.

When Buying Land, Title Searches Imoportant
S
urprising to many homebuyers is the need to purchase title insurance even when buying land only. A title search can miss things such as undisclosed heirs and wills not probated. Ownerʼs title insurance can protect you when this happens. It can also reveal other potential problems. For example, a title search may fail to identify that the two acres of land you want to purchase were once part of a five-acre tract. A prior deed to the five acres restricted the use of the property to “a single-family dwelling.” The other three acres from the original tract already contained a single-family dwelling, which creates doubt about the ability to build a home on the two acres. Ownerʼs title insurance can provide protection and assistance in obtaining releases from the appropriate parties to remove the problem and allow your house to be built. Since its inception, ownerʼs title insurance has offered protection that is significantly different from other lines of insurance. Typically, other types assume a particular risk and provide financial indemnity in the event the risk occurs. Title insurance, on the other hand, emphasizes loss prevention by eliminating risks caused by title problems arising from past events. To learn more about the importance of title insurance, visit the American Land Title Association Web site at www.alta.org.

Black Pro Coaches Still Receiving 2nd Class Treatment BY LEONARD MOON Style Sport Writer
O
ne would think that with the evolution of the African American athlete in professional sports, that the unabridged arrival of the African American head coach would soon follow. But the reality of the matter suggests that similar to our society at large, the plight of the Black head coach in pro sports is mired in a small window of tolerance in comparison to their counterparts. Whatever the dicotomy, the margin of error for the African American head coach is considerably smaller. Case in point, when Don Chaney became the first Black in the history of the Houston Rockets to become head coach in the late 80ʼs, it was not without it quirks. During his stint, he earned “Coach of the Year” honors but yet, he became lodged into the history books amidst a dubious distinction. Chaney became the first NBA coach in the gameʼs annals to win the top coachʼs award one season, and fired the next during a season when his team was playing .500 ball. Two seasons later,
Rudy Tomjanovich basically took Chaneyʼs team and won back-toback championships. And how about former Los Angeles Raiders head coach Art Shell. Although fired with a career record of 56-41, Shell career winning percentage was higher than well over 50 percent of the active coaches in the National Football League. But one would never realize his success based on his lack of another opportunity to lead a ballclub, in spite of his earning NFL Coach of the Year during his brief stint. The Pro Football Hall of Famer has suddenly become the “NFLʼs Forgotten Man” in coachʼs circles. In Major League Baseball, native Texan Clarence “Cito” Gaston led his Toronto Blue Jays to back-to-back world championships as its skipper, and at one time, was considered one of the “up and coming” field generals in the game. Since Gaston was fired by the Jays in 1996, heʼs never gotten another opportunity to manage another Major League Baseball team in spite of his 683-616 career winning record. In more recent years, former New Jersey Nets head coach Byron Scott led his team to two consecutive trips
Manager of a major sports league while with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1971 acknowledges that a double standard still exists. “You still fight the myths and stereotypes. I hate even talking about all these things, but thatʼs where it is”. The examples that could be sited are all over the place. Tyrone Willingham inherited a mediocre Notre Dame football team a few seasons back and led them to one of their best finishes in years on the gridiron, while maintaining a Don Chaney, First Black Coach to the Houston Rockets
to the N.B.A. Finals, and suddenly found himself unemployed following the next season. Does race have anything to do with these occurances or just coincidences? Al Attles, currently an assistant general manager of the Golden State Warriors, who in 1969 became only the third Black coach in NBA history responded by stating “Iʼm sure the people who do the hiring say no. But it surely has to be more than wins and losses. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, eventually you have to say that itʼs a duck”. Wayne Embry, who became the first Black General
high standard among his players academically. Before his first recruiting class could become seniors, he was unceremoniously dismissed. Perhaps former New Jersey Nets head coach Butch Beard put it best when he stated, “For Black coaches, you have to be a Jesus miracle worker. With a bad team, ownership wants you to do more than what the team is capable of doing. If you donʼt pull it off right away, it will surely be the coachʼs fault”.
C
ongratulations to Houston Gulf Shores senior roundballer Gerald Green for winning the prestigious McDonaldʼs All American High School Basketball Slam Dunk Contest held in South Bend, Indiana on the campus of Bethel College. The 6 foot 9 leaper outdueled seven other competitiors including home state favorite Josh McRoberts of Carmel, Indiana in a “dunk off” to bring the award back with him to Harris County. The winning “flush” was a patented between the legs, pump, thunderous dunk that earned 10ʼs from all seven judges. Green is one of only three Texans, and the only Houston player to qualify to participate in the annual high school basketball extravaganza. The Slam Dunk Contest was scheduled to precede the McDonaldʼs All-American High School Basketball Game on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 (tape delayed), before the “live” airing of the all-star contest on ESPN. The McDonaldʼs game has been instrumental in launching the careers of notables such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille OʼNeal, Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady and Michael Jordan among others. Green has signed a letter of intent to play for Oklahoma State.
