Donald Trump’s Big Lie About Health Care By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
D
onald Trump’s madcap presidency is now seeking to strip 20 million Americans of their health care coverage. He has instructed the Justice Department to join the lawsuit seeking to declare the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional. He then proclaimed that Republicans would offer a far better alternative, tweeting they’ll become the “Party of Great Health Care.” Only there is no plan. Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate majority leader, wants nothing to do with trying to develop one. Confusion reigns. This grotesque misrule might be funny were it not putting millions of people at risk. Trump has taken his animus against all things Obama to new heights in his obsessive drive to repeal or disembowel the Affordable Care Act. After the Republican Senate rejected repeal -feeding Trump’s disdain for Sen. John McCain, who cast the determining vote -- Trump’s administration has sought to undermine the act administratively. Seven million fewer people now have health care coverage since Trump was elected. Now he hopes to have the courts repeal the act. That would end the expansion of Medicaid, which covers more than 10 million low-wage workers and their families. It would repeal the
POLITICAL
requirement that insurance companies cover those with pre-existing conditions -- putting anyone who is ill now covered under the act at risk. It would repeal the provision allowing the young to be covered under their parents plan to age 26. Once more, insurance companies would be free to enforce lifetime limits on coverage, putting the most vulnerable at risk. Trump adds insult to this injury by proclaiming the big lie: that Republicans have or will have a plan that will cover more and be less expensive. But there is no plan. Trump aides say it will be developed in the Senate. McConnell, who rules Senate Republicans with a tight fist, says, “I look forward to seeing what the president is proposing and what he can work out with the speaker.” When asked if the two committees tasked with overseeing health care would come up with a plan, Sen. Charles Grassley responded tersely with a “no.” Scrambling to put a cover on his barefaced lie, Trump announced that Sen. Rick Scott, Republican of Florida, would join with a couple of other senators to come up with a “spectacular” plan. This is like naming Al Capone to design the tax code. In the 1990s, Scott was the CEO of Columbia/HCA. He

more people in stages. Cover those up to 30 and those 55 and over in the first stage. And then over years, perfect and extend the program to cover all. Pay for it by requiring the rich and the corporations pay their fair share of taxes. We’d end up paying less and getting better coverage. That rational solution runs into the strongest of entrenched interests -- the drug companies and the insurance companies and their legions of lobbyists. They are prepared to spend billions to protect their profits. They buy ads to scare the hell out of people, pay for politicians, and blanket congress with lobbyists. Now they have Trump fronting for them. It will take an aroused public to overcome that resistance. Trump believes that if you tell a big lie over and over and over again, pretty soon people will begin to believe. His political debut was the big lie about Obama’s birth certificate. He’s done the same with his racist rants on immigrants and the border wall. Now he plans the same big lie technique on health care: slandering what is, claiming to have a better plan when there is no plan, posturing as a champion of the people when he’s defending big money interests. Julian Castro Unveils Immigration Plan That Rolls Back Trump, Bush-era Laws CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire

residential hopeful Julian Castro unveiled an extensive immigration plan Tuesday that would roll back a
resigned in 1997, the same year the FBI announced an investigation of the company for massive Medicare fraud. In the end, Columbia/HCA pled guilty to systematic fraud -- featuring false billing of Medicare on a breathtaking scale. The company pled guilty to 14 corporate felonies and paid out some $1.7 billion in criminal fines and penalties in what the Justice Department called the “largest health care fraud case in U.S. history.” No doubt, if Scott were to come with a plan, it would be “spectacular” for the money guys, and savage for those in need of care. On health care, Trump’s lies are dangerous to life. The U.S. is the only advanced industrial country that does not provide universal health care as a right. We are paying almost twice per capita as other countries with worse health care results. U.S. life expectancy has declined for three years, in part because of the opioid crisis, in part because of the absence of adequate health care. Meanwhile, the insurance companies and the drug companies and the private hospital complexes rake in fortunes. What should be done is clear. The U.S. government should negotiate with drug companies to force lower prices for prescription drugs. Medicare should be strengthened and then extended to cover
series of laws implemented under Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump. Castro is the first candidate in the
crowded 2020 Democratic field to unveil a detailed immigration plan, putting him out in front on an issue that Trump made central to his 2016 campaign and plans to again champion in his re-election bid. The centerpiece of Castro’s plan provides a path to citizenship for “undocumented individuals and families who do not have a current pathway to legal status, but who live, work, and raise families in communities throughout the United States,” Castro’s campaign said in a release. It would also create a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, a group often described as Dreamers, and those undocumented immigrants who are currently in the country under Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure. “It’s time our nation’s immigration system reflect the collective values that we all share — equality, fairness, justice, and compassion,” Castro wrote in a Medium post on the plan. “It’s time that we recognize that protecting our borders and treating immigrants with compassion are not mutually exclusive.” He added: “I’m proud to unveil an immigration policy that re-integrates those collective values in our immigration system. A policy that is sensible and fair and treats those who cross our borders in search of refuge with empathy and understanding.” Castro’s plan is the polar opposite to what Trump has offered the United States and politically positions him as a Democratic leader on immigration. Trump has fought for years to fund the

construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border -- something his supporters demand with chants of “Build the Wall” at his campaign events. Recently, the President declared a national emergency along the border to secure funds for construction of the wall, something that even Republicans rebuked him over. In his Medium post, Castro noted other tenets of Trump’s immigration policies that he intends to change. “The next President must start by reversing the cruel policies of the Trump administration — including the Muslim ban, wasteful spending on a pointless wall, and cuts to the refugee program — and ending the vile rhetoric that has scapegoated and vilified immigrants,” Castro writes about his plan, a direct attack on Trump. Castro, as president, would increase refugee admissions, reunify families that have been separated at the border and allow deported veterans who served in the US military to return to the United States. But Castro isn’t only targeting Trumpera policies. Castro said he would repeal Section 1325 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which was used by the George W. Bush administration to apply a criminal violation -- as opposed to a civil infraction -- to anyone entering the United States illegally. The decades-old law was used by the Bush administration to attempt to curb the number of illegal entrances into the United States, something that Castro wrote needs to end.

Currently, they are reviewing two new bills so that school boards would no longer have the option to give up some state funding in order to get rid of superintendents who have fallen out of favor. Macy’s Invests in New Beauty Tech
Adage.com acy’s is doubling down on the beauty business this year. On a recent earnings call with analysts, the retailer’s executives noted that the brand will be investing more in the category this year. The retailer is using its learnings from customer behavior online and using that to inform new fixtures and applications in brick-and-mortar. For example, Macy’s found that customers liked to shop online for fragrances by scent, but inside stores, the category is arranged by perfume brand. Macy’s recently entered a new partnership with Perch Interactive that will include fragrance finders in stores so consumers can browse by scent in person, as they do online. The company is doing something similar with skincare. In addition, Macy’s is exploring new technology like augmented reality to give consumers even more choices.

African-Americans More Likely to Be Misdiagnosed with Schizophrenia
ScienceDaily.com frican-Americans with severe depression are more likely to be misdiagnosed as having schizophrenia, according to a new Rutgers study. The study, which appeared online prior to being published in the February 2019 issue of the journal Psychiatric Services, examined the medical records of 1,657 people at a community behavioral health clinic that included screening for major depression as part of its assessment for schizophrenia in new patients. The study, which looked at 599 blacks and 1,058 non-Latino whites, found that clinicians failed to effectively weigh mood symptoms when diagnosing schizophrenia among African-Americans, suggesting that racial bias, whether conscious or subconscious, is one factor in the diagnosis of schizophrenia in this population. Other factors include genetics, poverty and discrimination, as well as symptoms caused by infections and malnutrition early in life

PBS.org hicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot’s resounding victory was a clear call for change at City Hall and a historic repudiation of the old-style, insider politics that have long defined the nation’s third-largest city. Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor who’d never been elected to public office, defeated Cook County Board President and longtime City Council member Toni Preckwinkle with backing from voters across the city. Late results showed Lightfoot, 56, winning every one of the city’s 50 wards. Lightfoot also made history, becoming the first black woman and the first openly gay person to be elected Chicago mayor. Resilience.org he fossil fuel industry regularly deploys manipulative and dishonest tactics when engaging with communities of color, often working to co-opt the respect and authority of minority-led groups to serve corporate goals. That is according to a new report, “Fossil Fueled Foolery,” published today by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which outlines the top 10 manipulation tactics that the group’s members and partners routinely observe. Some of the tactics are broad and political, like investing in efforts to undermine democracy through voter suppression and other means, or like financing political campaigns and “investing in” politicians at local, county, and state levels. Other tactics are even more discreet and deceitful, like claiming that regulations that would benefit heavily polluted communities will cause these same communities economic harm.

And fans of CW’s “Jane the Virgin” are preparing to say goodbye to a show entering its fifth and final season. The departure of the two Latino-themed shows demonstrates the challenges such projects still encounter on networks and streaming services. Networks may feel pressure to tap into the growing Latino population — now the largest minority group in the U.S. — but the shows often receive limited promotions and are on a short leash from executives who want to see good ratings fast. Advocates of more diversity on television say these shows are often given difficult time slots or are buried deep in the maze of streaming apps. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Silky Vocalist Shawn Sounds Talks NBC ‘The Voice’ And ‘Putting On’ For Houston By Keandra Scott, Style Entertainment Writer
C
lincher: Houston Aldine ISD educator graces NBC ‘The Voice’ and secures a spot with first-time judge, Grammy Award-winning artist John Legend. It’s Team John Legend for Shawn Sounds after blowing the judges away with his rendition of “All My Life” by K-Ci & JoJo. The vocalist is coming out the gate swinging as he battles to the top of NBC ‘The Voice’; Houston, Sounds just might be the chosen one. The four-chair turner is serving the world warm tones and silky-smooth vocal range as he channels the spirit of Luther Vandross; we promise you the legend lives in his voice. Known as Mr. Lionel Taylor to his students at an Aldine ISD middle school, the singing educator teaches an important lesson of ‘going after your dreams’ as he progresses through ‘battle rounds’. We got a chance to have a hometown chat with ‘The Voice’ contestant. Keandra Scott: What are you doing when you’re not singing? Shawn Sounds: I enjoy writing music, walking dogs and playing cool games on my phone apps. Also, I enjoy taking different types of dance classes (cardio and aerobics). KS: Who have you bonded with on-set? SS: Julian King, Kalvin Jarvis, Kanard Thomas, Denton Arnell, Matthew Johnson, Dexter Roberts, Rod Stokes, and Lisa Ramey. Honestly, I’m really cool with mostly everyone and still communicate with them and John Legend on the phone when I’m not in LA. I’ve enjoyed bonding with team John Legend. We call ourselves ‘The J Five’. KS: From Louisiana, California, Florida, Alabama to Texas, you have lived in many places. At what point in your life did you know your vocals was anointed? SS: It was in Kindergarten class. My teacher noticed I sung differently than my peers, the adults at the church, everyone knew it and saw it. I’ve been around different styles of music since a young age. [Shawn was already enrolled in college-level classes for vocal performance, theater and dance by the time he was in fourth grade. In high school, his family moved to Florida where he joined a community choir that traveled the state singing with artists such as Barry Manilow.] KS: Who are some of your influences? SS: Usher and Beyonce. When listening to music I like to go back to the 90s with Brandy, Fantasia, and Musiq Soulchild. I was born in the 80s so I was exposed to Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Patti Labelle, Michael Jackson, and so many other iconic artists. Honestly, I didn’t necessarily grow up

I was offered an opportunity to go to Dallas last summer, so I drove 4 hours to audition. I went back until I finally did my blind audition. My students,
family, friends, and fans have all been super supportive. My mom and dad met here in Houston and then they moved to New Orleans. There are so many ties to Houston. Houston needs to know, while we have our unique H-Town sound & Beyonce, we really don’t have many homegrown artists representing. My

goal is to be that and do it for Houston and the world. KS: What about John Legend made you give him, “The Green Light” as a coach? SS: His resume and artistry is #1, he is the best person for me to emulate after. John Legend has multiple Grammys, an Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe, and many other awards. He is classically trained and plays different styles of music. I feel he does what I do; I felt a connection. Most importantly, who better than ‘The new kid on the block’ that has a point to prove. KS: Do you incorporate your love for music into your class curriculum? SS: I teach in a computer lab. One day we will listen to Disney, R&B, Country, and Classical. We listen to different genres because I have an appreciation for all types of music. Although it doesn’t align with the class curriculum, I try to make sure I create a relaxing environment for my students. They get to hop on a computer for 45 minutes and learn while listening to music. I also use to teach 9th Grade BCIS at a high school in Galena Park so I truly have an appreciation for teaching kids. KS: Do you have a favorite key to sing in? SS: Ha-Ha, I do not. In its original key as it is recorded. KS: What are your favorite genres of music to sing? SS: R&B and Soul, hands down. KS: Have you ever sung background for anyone? SS: I got a chance to tour with UK Jazz artist Jarrod Lawson. I remember when the company that helped bring him to Houston called me to sing backs for him. They represent and find the best of the best, so I was, even more, happier to get that call. I took the opportunity without any hesitation. I learned all new parts, female and male. It was all worth the challenge and experience. He is one of my favorite indie artists of all time. KS: Do you have a mantra? SS: Do the best you can with what you have. It’s not even just all about music, it’s about life. Take time to assess your financial situation and make any necessary adjustments so you can start the new job focused and ready,” says Valerie Radford, a vice president of Strategic Initiatives at Prudential Financial. As you’re making the switch, Radford says there are a few things to keep in mind:

• Don’t Leave Money on the Table: Keep track of your 401(k) if you had one at your previous job. You can simplify your financial picture by bringing together any orphan plans you’ve left in the investing universe. Also, make sure to take advantage of your new employer’s 401(k) match feature, if offered, and continue momentum by increasing your contribution, if possible. • Don’t Go It Alone: Consider using a third-party platform to manage finances and benefits in one place that’s designed
to rebalance your goals as circumstances change. For example, when you set up an account with LINK by Prudential, you’ll be prompted to answer questions about what financial goals are important to you and, in turn, will be offered personalized solutions to help you reach them. LINK combines the convenience of a digital experience with the knowledge of a professional advisor who can walk you through this important transition by phone, video or in-person. To learn more, visit prudential.com/link • Consider Your Bonus: If you’re receiving a sign-on bonus or have an old bonus saved, determine whether this money belongs in a short-term, norisk account or whether a longer-term approach with exposure to financial markets makes sense. • Budgets are Fundamental: If you’re making more money, calculate if additional funds can be put into savings. This is a great place to use a tool like LINK that allows you to see all your money in one place, and can help you determine where to direct extra funds. If you’re making less money, you might need to
see where to make cuts. • Review Your Insurance: Take a breath before moving forward with health coverage decisions. If you’re married, evaluate both partner’s plans, not only for the more affordable option, but also for each plan’s restrictions. For instance, if one plan allows you to see doctors without referrals while the other doesn’t, you’ll have to decide whether that’s worth the extra cost. Finally, take a look at the amount your new employer is offering for life insurance. It’s often not enough. Consulting a financial advisor can help you determine how much additional insurance to take out. Don’t let your financial goals get lost in the shuffle of a job transition. A few strategies and tools can keep you on track. In this Mocha-Rubbed Duck Breast recipe, cocoa powder, ground coffee and savory spices are rubbed onto the meat before it’s seared and smothered with a luscious sweet cherry and red wine sauce. The toasty, nutty flavor of coffee complements the cocoa while dark sweet cherries, red wine and toasted almonds complete the sweet and savory dish. The Unsung Hero: Eric Gordon Is An Intricate Part of the Rockets Success This Season By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor
W
ith less than a week left in the 2018-19 NBA season, the Houston Rockets are looking to secure the number three seed in the Western Conference playoffs. If the cards fall right they may even be able to move up behind the Golden State Warriors for the number two spot if the Denver Nuggets have a couple of setbacks and Houston wins out. The Rockets needs to stay in that spot to avoid an early matchup with the 2018 NBA Finals champs Golden State Warriors. One player who could help them secure that spot and potentially lead them back to the Western Conference Finals is shooting guard Eric Gordon. He tends to be overlooked on a team that has potential back-to-back MVP James Harden, a for sure first ballot Hall of Famer in Chris Paul, and a center who has been on point since the All-Star break (16.5 points per game and 12.6 rebounds) in Clint Capela. The 6’4 combo guard has done everything asked of him on this team including coming off the bench when the Rockets had Carmelo Anthony, but coach Mike D’Antoni realized that strategy was not going to work.
Easy,” Gordon became a free agent and signed a four-year $54 million dollar contract with the Houston Rockets. Coach D’Antoni used his knowledge of what he knew from the U.S.A. Basketball Camp to get the 2016-17 NBA Sixth Man of The Year to buy into his system of shooting from the perimeter rather than driving to the lane.

“Eric is one of those guys we need to have in the game early so he can get a rhythm going. He finds spots on the floor that the defense can’t adjust to quickly and takes advantage of that,” said D’Antoni of Gordon who is averaging 16.3 points per game while shooting 35% from three-point range.
University, Gordon declared himself eligible for the 2008 NBA draft where he was the seventh pick in the first round by the Los Angeles Clippers. He was a unanimous pick for the All-Rookie second team and spent a total of three seasons with the Clippers before spending the next five with the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans. Often hampered with injuries during his time in the “Big
After spending one year at Indiana
That transition worked very well for Gordon and the Rockets last year as they won a franchise record 65 games and took the Warriors to seven games in the 2018 Western Conference Finals. This year has been tough as he has dealt with some injuries that caused him to miss some playing time this season. He was sidelined in late December for eight games during a stretch where Chris Paul was injured, and the Rockets were having a terrible month. Now all he wants to do is get his team over the hump in the playoffs and potentially play for a championship. “We are trying to win the rest of these games for the rest of the year and develop championship habits,” said Gordon after a win against the Sacramento Kings.

Pageant World Is More Than What’s Seen at Miss Ultimate Beauty of America By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

isconceptions of beauty pageants are plentiful. Lots of beautiful women standing at a perfect angle with bountiful curls, precisely applied make-up, wearing the most intricate of materials awaiting the perfect score from someone who knows absolutely nothing about who they really are. That’s what the outsiders see. However, those in this inner world of gowns and beads, glitz and glam know that beauty pageants are far more beyond that scope. Beauty pageants are the avenue to which girls are transformed from timid, unsure vesicles to resilient, self-assured, advocates for not just themselves but to the many eyes that look at their confidence yearning to be just like them. When Roneshia Ray started out she was the one looking to others. Coming from a circumstance where hope was short and the opportunity was scarce, Ray had a limited outlook for her future. But thanks to a life-changing college experience, boss-like mentors, and not being afraid to tell her own story, Ray discovered how much she loved mentoring young girls. She saw how she was able to take their limited view of themselves as she once had for her own self and expand their view to heights unknown to them and that was a gift beyond rewards for her. “I was honest with those young ladies about my mistakes. My shortcomings and even some things that I was still working on!” What she was still working on was becoming Roneshia Ray. That would be further developed with the introduction

self-doubt Ray’s pageant career almost ended. But it didn’t. She went on to her next pageant and found she still had a lot to learn…about herself. The Miss Ultimate Beauty of America Pageant is “when grace, compassion, and purpose meet beauty” according to their tagline. Ray calls the pageant a personal development program where young ladies of all nations can utilize their own talents and skills to bring out the best in those that they mentor through scholarship and community service while showcasing their own beauty and style to further enhance their personal growth. Twenty young ladies ranging in age from 5 to 40 competed for five different national titles under the MBOA umbrella in the areas of private interview, swimwear/sportswear, fun fashion wear, evening gown, and on-stage question. Contestants were also required to perform several hours of community service where younger contestants addressed issues at their schools and older contestants mentored young queens. The

three-day pageant weekend was a full schedule of competition, an all-white breakfast, community service project, hours of rehearsals with choreographer extraordinaire, Courtney Ned, and the preliminary and final shows. The competition was stiff and the ladies were absolutely stunning both inside and out. Anyone of them would have made an excellent representative for the pageant system. Somehow the judges were able to narrow the field of contestants down to the five beauties who now wear the crowns. The 2019 Miss Ultimate Beauty of America queens are as follows: Miss Ultimate Beauty of America 2019 Rebecca Edwards, Miss Ultimate Beauty of America Teen 2019 Kennedy Johnson; Mrs. Ultimate Beauty of America 2019 Valerie King; Miss Ultimate Beauty of America Preteen 2019 Saniya Scott; Miss Ultimate Beauty of America Princess 2019 Zara Alexander. As part of their winnings, the ladies will share a prize worth over $25,000 that includes a college scholarship, wardrobe, jewelry, and an international trip.
