COMMENTARY
Trump’s Border Threats Create Chaos By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer CLOSING...the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week.” His aides said he was deadly serious. Trump’s leading mouthpiece, acting-Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney told ABC News that it would take “something dramatic” to stop him from doing it. Less than a week later, Trump reversed himself. He suddenly praised Mexico as being “very nice,” claiming that Mexico had changed its policy toward the asylum seekers, which a befuddled Mexican government quickly denied. He retreated by issuing new bluster: “We’re going to give them a one-year warning, and if the drugs don’t stop, or largely stop, we’re going to put tariffs on Mexico and products, in particular cars. And if that doesn’t work, we’re going to close the border. You know I will do it. I don’t play games,” Trump warned, playing games with his threats.
D
onald Trump’s flailings on immigration and the Mexican border continue to spiral into chaos. First, he threatened to close the border with Mexico. One week later, he walked that back. He declares a national emergency about the “invasion” of people seeking asylum from Central American countries, and then says he’s stopped all aid to those countries, which can only worsen the conditions that cause people to leave. He says he’s already building a wall. That isn’t true. He torpedoes bipartisan measures that might begin to make things better. It’s increasingly clear Trump wants a crisis that he can use politically, not a solution that can ease human suffering.
What was the “something dramatic” that convinced the president to take back his threat? He was mugged by reality. Closing our 2,000-mile border with Mexico would be an economic catastrophe, a moral blight, inconceivably inane and literally impossible. A combined 15 million people live along the border. There are $1.7 billion of twoway trade and hundreds of thousands of
Two weeks ago, Trump’s threat was clear: “If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug [sic] our Southern Border,” he tweeted, “I will be
POLITICAL
Trump lives in a universe that he shares only with rabid Fox News commentators, but, in this case, he was forcibly reminded of reality by Republican business leaders and by the conservative U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which warned that closing the border would “inflict severe economic harm on American families.” Even Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, who usually wags his tail at whatever the president tweets, warned of “potentially catastrophic economic damage.” Trump’s threats are just posturing, but his policy is a chaotic calamity. He declares a national emergency to claim money for his wall (largely from the military) against the will of the bipartisan majority in both houses of Congress. He rails about the import of drugs, ignoring the reality that virtually all of the hard drugs come in through legal ports of entry that his “wall” won’t address. He describes the rising number of people
seeking asylum as “an invasion,” scorning both international and U.S. law and basic morals, then directs his State Department to cut off $450 million in aid to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, which will surely worsen the conditions that are driving people to seek asylum. He traveled to the California border to celebrate the building of a new section of his promised border wall, when no new building had taken place, only a routine upgrade of old fencing. He cut off protections for the Dreamers, the young people who have grown up in the U.S., and torpedoed the bipartisan agreement that would have protected them and added to border security after he said he’d sign it. He scaled back protections for asylum seekers, helping to create the backlog at the border. Then his administration cruelly separated parents and children at the border, creating a shameful human horror that continues to this day. Clearly Trump wants an issue to run on politically, not a solution to a humanitarian tragedy. Steve Bannon, Trump’s 2016 campaign strategist, argued that as long as the debate is over immigrants Trump benefits. Trump uses attacks on immigrants as the centerpiece of his white, nationalist appeal.
Democrats Unveil Bill to Expand Protections Against Workplace Harrassment By Clare Foran and Sunlen Serfaty, CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire

emocrats Unveil Bill to Expand z Against Workplace By Clare Foran and Sunlen Serfaty, CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire A group of Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday are unveiling sweeping legislation to strengthen and expand federal protections aimed at preventing workplace harassment and discrimination nationwide. The legislation, titled the “BE HEARD in the Workplace Act,” is being introduced in the Senate by Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, a member of Senate leadership and the top Democrat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee. A number of high-profile congressional Democrats have signed on as co-sponsors, including 2020 candidates Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker as well as Bernie Sanders, an Independent who caucuses

with Democrats. A companion version of the legislation is also being introduced in the House, an effort led by Democratic Reps. Katherine Clark, Ayanna Pressley, Elissa Slotkin and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. While the Democratic-backed bill faces tough odds of passage given the Republican-controlled Senate, the effort comes after Congress passed long-stalled legislation at the end of last year to reform the way sexual harassment is handled on Capitol Hill. As the #MeToo movement rose to prominence, Capitol Hill has been forced to confront its own problems with workplace harassment and a number of lawmakers, Republicans and Democrats, have had to resign as a result of sexual misconduct scandals. In the wake of Congress taking steps to get itself in order over sexual harassment, the BE HEARD Act represents a push to
more broadly tackle the issue of harassment and discrimination in industries across the country. The legislation is focused on preventing sexual harassment as well as other forms of workplace harassment and discrimination, including on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, age and disability. The bill introduction follows a report on workplace harassment released by Murray last year. The report shared stories of harassment experienced by individuals working in a variety of jobs, including as nannies, fast food workers, and hotel housekeepers. That report concluded that existing protections enshrined in law are inadequate and outlined a series of recommendations for congressional action. The BE HEARD Act has a wide-ranging set of provisions that include convening a task force that will make recommendations on strategies to prevent harassment, facilitating research on workplace harassment, and eliminating the tipped minimum wage. According to a summary of the legislation provided by Murray’s office, the bill requires the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission “to convene a harassment prevention task force that includes business leaders, researchers, employee advocates, and others.” The summary states that the task force will “identify and recommend harassment prevention strategies” as well as “provide sector-specific guidance to industries with particularly prevalent or severe harassment.” Additionally, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Census Bureau

and the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics will develop “a national prevalence survey on harassment in the workplace” that will be administered by the Census Bureau. The legislation would further require the US Commission on Civil Rights to “study the enforcement of civil rights, nondiscrimination and laws prohibiting harassment” and would require BLS to “study the economic impacts of harassment in employment.” According to the summary, “Employers with 15 or more employees are required to adopt, maintain, and periodically review a comprehensive harassment and nondiscrimination policy, which will establish policies and procedures to prevent and respond to discrimination and harassment.” The bill would also eliminate the tipped minimum wage, which the summary of the legislation says, “exacerbates harassment of workers who rely on tips.” Among a number of other provisions, the legislation would also establish a “grant program run by the Women’s Bureau of the Department of Labor for grants for private entities, including colleges, community based organizations, nonprofits, labor organizations, legal aid groups, to prevent and address employment discrimination, including harassment.” The legislation comes with endorsements from a long list of organizations, including the ACLU, NAACP, Human Rights Campaign, the Center for American Progress, National Women’s Law Center and National Domestic Workers Alliance.

Three Texas Bills Mean Better Health for Black Mothers
News.UTexas.edu hree bills under consideration at the Texas Legislature would help Texas make great strides in reducing maternal health disparity by extending Medicaid benefits for a full year, supporting doula programs and requiring a curriculum on implicit bias and systemic inequities for health care practitioners. Texas HB 4301 proposes to provide medical assistance reimbursement for doula services, including childbirth education and emotional and physical support during pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. Passage of this bill would strengthen organizations which offers doula postpartum home visits and then transitions new black mothers to “sister circles.” The organization also offers training to understand systemic inequities in the health care system. Texas Charter Schools Are Facing More Backlash This Year
TexasTribune.org unded by the state but managed privately by nonprofits, charter schools have held a unique political position in Texas, allying with voucher advocates under the broad “school choice” umbrella while also lobbying lawmakers to shell out more for public education. The decision to avoid the rally was emblematic of a larger strategy charter leaders appear to be using this legislative session as the political winds shift away from subsidizing private school tuition for Texas parents. As lawmakers discuss putting billions more into the public education system for the first time in years, charter advocates are leaning away from their association with private schools and leaning into their similarities with traditional public schools — while seeking the resources to educate the growing number of families wanting to enroll.

HISD Parents Protest Possible TEA Takeover
NewsFixHouston.com The Texas Education Agency has been investigating Houston ISD for several months, and there’s been talk of the agency taking over the state’s largest school district. Parents and students gathered at Houston ISD headquarters Monday afternoon to protest the takeover. Many of the parents have different philosophies when it comes to education and aren’t in agreement on everything, but they do all believe that a TEA takeover of HISD would only make things worse. In January, TEA launched their investigation into HISD after a possible violation of the Texas Open Meetings Act. Then at the end of March, the TEA asked HISD to suspend its search for a new superintendent the day before the district was set to announce their finalist. A few students, some parents of HISD students and representatives from several organizations including the Houston Federation of Teachers showed up.

Texas House Signs Off On Medical Schools for Sam Houston State, UH
TexasTribune.org he Texas House approved two new medical schools in Texas this week, one at Sam Houston State University and the other at the University of Houston. The decisions bring both universities’ plans for medical schools one step closer to reality, though both still need Senate approval. The Sam Houston State enabling legislation — House Bill 2867 by Rep. Will Metcalf, R-Conroe, and Rep. Tom Oliverson, R-Cypress — was approved Thursday, but it will still need final approval on what is called the third reading from the House. That third reading is usually just a formality. Both bills were approved by wide margins. Texas already has a dozen medical schools. Programs at UH and Sam Houston State will grow the number of schools in the Houston area, the Texas region with the highest concentration.

Racist Filmed Beating a Black Woman Is Trying to Avoid a Hate Crime
NewsOne.com rotesters have called for hate crime charges against the white man seen on video last month brutally beating a Black woman in Dallas, but the man’s attorney has dismissed those calls. Despite damning video evidence, the attorney representing Austin Shuffield claimed that there’s no proof that racism played a role in his client’s assault of 24-year-old L’Daijohnique Lee, the Dallas Morning News reported. Lee’s attorney, S. Lee Merritt, has said that Shuffield called this client a “stupid nigger” during the March 21 attack in which he pulled a gun the woman before punching her unconscious. As the prosecutor weighs its legal options against the white bartender, many were still fuming over the injustice when the police charged Lee with felony criminal mischief for damaging Shuffield’s pickup truck after the violent assault. In the fateful encounter caught on video that has since gone viral, Shuffield appears to hold a gun in one hand as he slaps away Lee’s cellphone.

The official did not provide specifics about the ongoing investigation but told CNN some pastors in the heart of south-central Louisiana’s Cajun and Creole country are sleeping in their churches as a precaution against additional fires. It is still unclear who is responsible for the fires and will likely take investigators time to sift through what evidence remains to determine if the blazes are connected. As they do, residents and worshippers in St. Landry Parish, where all three fires occurred, are withholding judgment about what may have caused them, even as officials say they contained “suspicious elements” and the episodes evoke recollections of past acts of hate against black churches.

The newly published “2018 State of Hispanic Homeownership Report” determined that Hispanics accounted for 62.7 percent of net U.S. homeownership gains over the past decade, with 7.8 million Hispanic homeowners. And while the Hispanic homeownership rate is still below its 2007 peak at 49.7 percent, NAHREP found that Hispanics were the only ethnic demographic group to raise their rate of homeownership. Furthermore, in nearly every state where Hispanics account for greater than 30 percent of the state’s population, their rate of homeownership is above 50 percent.

As you’re making the switch, Radford says there are a few things to keep in mind:

• Don’t Leave Money on the Table: Keep track of your 401(k) if you had one at your previous job. You can simplify your financial picture by bringing together any orphan plans you’ve left in the investing universe. Also, make sure to take advantage of your new employer’s 401(k) match feature, if offered, and continue momentum by increasing your contribution, if possible. • Don’t Go It Alone: Consider using a third-party platform to manage finances and benefits in one place that’s designed
to rebalance your goals as circumstances change. For example, when you set up an account with LINK by Prudential, you’ll be prompted to answer questions about what financial goals are important to you and, in turn, will be offered personalized solutions to help you reach them. This is a great place to use a tool like LINK that allows you to see all your money in one place, and can help you determine where to direct extra funds. If you’re making less money, you might need to see where to make cuts.
• Review Your Insurance: Take a breath before moving forward with health coverage decisions. If you’re married, evaluate both partner’s plans, not only for the more affordable option, but also for each plan’s restrictions. For instance, if one plan allows you to see doctors without referrals while the other doesn’t, you’ll have to decide whether that’s worth the extra cost. Finally, take a look at the amount your new employer is offering for life insurance. It’s often not enough. Consulting a financial advisor can help you determine how much additional insurance to take out. Don’t let your financial goals get lost in the shuffle of a job transition. A few strategies and tools can keep you on track. Millennials: Lost In the Struggle, Or Leading It? By Nicole Lynne Gray, Style Feature Writer
T
Although millennials are showing no fear in taking matters into their own hands, they are not letting the government off the hook either. They are demanding their positions be heard and holding lawmakers accountable for addressing the issues important to them. Take for instance how students across this country staged national walkouts to demand action on gun reform. Some of those students can’t even drive yet—let that sink in. You remember seeing them on the national news. They were bold, eloquent, and informed as they warned
o be clear: Millennials get ‘it’ more than they are given credit for. Like generations before them, millennials have been labeled everything from entitled to lazy, with elders remarking that millennials don’t want to work or otherwise do what it takes to succeed. But, I write this as a challenge to those of us on the outside looking in, to think back to the thoughts our elders had of our generation and us. Think of how radical our ideas and methods seemed to them as we attempted to take the value of our lessons learned and translate those into next steps to meet the new challenges. Remember what they said? Remember how they reacted? I raise these questions and challenges, now particularly, because black millennials have recently lost a leader in Nipsey Hussle, the Grammy-nominated rap artist who was recently killed outside of his clothing store in South Central Los Angeles, California. Hussle disseminated a message, through his life and music, of community revitalization and activism; entrepreneurship; investment; ownership; overall health and wellness; and generational wealth. His message was one of betterment, for the generation, the community, and, in turn, the nation. For many, the message resonated with them because it conveyed their sentiment, for others, it gave them hope for the future. As we reflect on our past struggles and pushes for change, we must recognize that millennials, in their own right, have become moguls, social change agents, and political activists in a time of what seems to most as total chaos. So, maybe they do get it. Millennials have grown up in the digital age and have learned to leverage the global marketplace that is at their fingertips. They have grown up in an age where they can create, brand, market, and run successful businesses from their smart devices, from just about anywhere, even turning themselves into moguls. To the extreme, you have Mark Zuckerberg, the most famous millennial who is responsible for the beloved and/ or begrudged Facebook. Becoming the world’s youngest self-made billionaire in 2007, at only 23, Zuckerberg has been amongst the world’s most wealthy and influential for over a decade according to lists published by Forbes and Times magazine. With his amassed fortune, he has donated millions of dollars to various charities, causes and start-up companies and inspired others to launch their ideas and begin to rise among the world’s power players as well. Zuckerberg is an instance of the extreme, however, but in this day’s age more of the norm than the exception. The generation has a strong entrepreneurial spirit. In and of themselves, millennials all over this country are branding themselves and their crafts and not only making money but also

giving back to their communities. Millennials are using their social media savvy and international reach to be social change agents. They are changing the communities they live in, the nation and even the world with their abilities to organize and otherwise draw attention to issues that matter to them. Some are bypassing the organization and the establishment, taking matters into their own hands and just getting things done. Black Lives Matter, for instance, started as an online campaign launched by three young black women following the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Matter in 2013. Since, it has become an international organization, arranging and staging demonstrations, across the globe, against the rising number of deaths of black men by police in America and even entering the political arena, rallying against the Trump campaign. Beyond organizing, others are stepping up with their funds to address social issues. Take, Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s son, Jaden Smith. With the government still sitting on its hands, Smith’s water
company, Just Water, teamed up with a local church in Flint, Michigan along with other organizations to provide a mobile filtration system, which will remove lead and other poisons from the water. Hussle, another great example, took his entrepreneurial spirit to begin building the infrastructure of his community of South Central LA. An act that was so desperately needed and one that would give youth an alternative to the gang life he had been affiliated with. For one, Hussle co-owned a shopping plaza where he launched many business and philanthropic efforts to better his community. He committed to hiring the disenfranchised, provided a co-working space and launched a science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiative for youth of color, amongst other things. In fact, Hussle’s community impact was so great that it will go down in U.S. history as Congress-member Karen Bass has vowed to read his contributions into the Congressional Record. So, millennials are being the change they want to see. They are not asking permission to act; they are doing it, both socially and politically.
www.stylemagazine.com
lawmakers, in no uncertain terms, that if they do not advance gun legislation they would be voted out (as soon as they were eligible to vote). So, you see, millennials are not just stuck in their digital worlds they are receiving and disseminating news at near real-time and acting upon it; they are using their medium as their megaphone to demand lawmakers to listen. Bottom line, millennials do get it and have begun a movement all of their own. So, as I renew my challenges, I recall the flood of images of Martin Luther King, Jr. on my timeline last Thursday as the nation recalled his legacy and untimely death on April 4, 1968. As I viewed the images, I thought of the pain that generation must have felt as it lost its champion and symbol of hope for equality and justice. Further, I thought of the angst they must have felt of the thought of continuing the struggle without its emboldened leader. It made me think how much more in common the generations have than differences; yes the clothing, commerce, conventions, and culture may have changed but one thing remains— everyone is striving for their version of the American dream, complete with its promises of life, liberty, and justice. So, as we embrace this generation as they mourn the death of Hussle, let us recall our past struggles for change and meet the challenge of trying to get ‘them,’ because, believe me, they get it. Now, they could really use the love, understanding, and support to continue the struggle they are leading.

American Diabetes Association Announces Risk Test Campaign in Partnership with Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis By StyleMagazine.com Newswire
P
recinct One Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and members of the medical profession on Wednesday, April 3 announced a campaign to inform people about a 60-second online “Know Your Risk” test for type 2 diabetes. The campaign, spearheaded by ADA, also is being promoted in Precinct One on 25 billboards co-sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield and Clear Channel Outdoor Americas. “Diabetes type 2 is preventable and treatable if people know their risk and have the resources to take action to prevent or treat diabetes,” Commissioner
Ellis said. “This public service campaign is needed in Precinct One because we have several communities at high risk. Type 2 diabetes disproportionately affects communities of color, seniors and other underserved communities.” Said Melissa Edwards, executive director of Central South Texas ADA: “Today is an example of community partners working together to help our neighbors know their risk for type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association is proud to partner and share our free online type 2 diabetes risk test that takes 60 seconds to complete and, if you are at risk, connect you to online and in-person resources within a 25-mile radius of your ZIP code.” The billboards, in English and Spanish, were unveiled at a news conference Wednesday at Baylor College of Medicine–Cullen Building. “Clear Channel Outdoor Americas is pleased to be a part of this program to reach the public with this lifesaving message,” said Lee Vela, vice president for public affairs at Clear Channel Outdoor. “This message will be displayed on 25 traditional billboards in Harris County Precinct One and up to 12 digital bill-
boards in other parts of the county – all of which will create millions of market impressions. It is our sincere hope that this message reaches those who are in danger of developing diabetes.” Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Also, 1 in 11 Americans has diabetes and 86 million are at risk. In Texas, 14.6% of the adult population have diabetes, according to the ADA. Harris County has an average prevalence rate of 12% while neighborhoods like Kashmere Gardens and Acres Homes in Precinct One have prevalence rates between 20% and 24%, underscoring the need for this public service campaign. Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam, professor of medicine in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine, said the risk score is extremely accurate and it can help guide a person to the next step. He said everyone is somewhere at the risk stage and at some point “we all start going down that slope that ends up with complications of diabetes.” ”That’s the bad news,” he said. “But the good news is that no matter where you are on that slope, there are great studies, many of which we participated
in, that show you can actually keep on decreasing that risk. If you are sliding downhill, you can actually push your way back up to the top of the hill back to health. That can happen at any level of risk.” Joy Ashby Cornthwaite, registered dietitian and diabetes educator at McGovern Medical School at UT Health Science Center, said people can decrease their risk of developing diabetes or manage the disease if they change their lifestyle by being physically active and eating healthier, including fruits and vegetables. “Once you know, you can’t un-know,” she said. “But also once you know, you can change. You’ll be able to make choices that arm yourself with the knowledge, with the skills, with the resources and then with the extended support to help you live a long and healthy life.” Dr. Jerald L. Zarin, medical director of Medicaid and government programs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, said: “This initiative has the potential to have a tremendous impact on the health of many people in the Houston-Harris County region. Early detection of pre-diabetes and diabetes is critical to preventing and managing the disease.”

Once frosting has set (about 1 hour) gently press down on pink frosting to create smoother look. To assemble cupcakes: Pipe green frosting onto each cupcake in series of short motions to create individual grass spots. Cover top of each cupcake completely. To make bunny butts: Place cut sides of marshmallow halves onto each frosted cupcake, leaving room for bunny feet. Shape remaining white frosting into dime-sized balls then roll with white sprinkles to cover. Pipe small drop of remaining pink or white frosting onto top of each marshmallow. Press bunny tail on top. Place both bunny feet against base of marshmallow with toes facing down.

Suffering From Allergies? Here’s a Quick & Easy Natural Solution By BlackDoctor.org
Lion’s Maine mushrooms are an excellent choice as an anti-stress herb to ease tension. Many people who take Reishi and Lion’s Maine via mushroom powder or by adding it to their diets on a regular basis notice that they feel much more peaceful than before.
Now that the winter is clearing and spring is here, the possibility of allergies and inflammation become more present. BUT there may be a simple and natural way to help alleviate these annoyances, the mushroom. Mushrooms have so many health benefits in addition to being tasty in our meals and snacks. You may know mushrooms can help with weight loss, but did you know they can also help with seasonal allergies? Yep, you read that right! Eating mushrooms or even adding mushroom powder to your diet can help you beat seasonal allergies, and here’s how. Natural Stress Reliever To The Rescue: Allergies, like many other health issues, can be brought on by stress. Reishi and

Mushrooms Clear The Liver: Maitake and reishi mushrooms are two of the best liver cleansers. In Eastern medicine, they are commonly used to protect and fortify liver functions. The liver also plays a role in blood sugar management by helping to prevent hypoglycemia. This is important because we are most likely to experience allergic reactions when the blood sugar level falls. It’s been proven that by keeping a balance blood sugar level it’s possible to avoid the onset of seasonal allergies. Mushrooms Minimize Inflammation: Breathing in allergens irritates the nose and can cause swelling and inflammation. The easiest way to naturally rid the body of inflammation is to eat more foods with anti-inflammatory qualities such as fish, flaxseed, fresh fruit, Black Seed Oil, green tea, garlic, leafy greens, and ginger. In addition, we can use natural products such as reishi and Lion’s Maine to minimize the inflammatory response, as shown in an international scientific study.
Reishi contains steroid-like anti-inflammatory compounds that inhibit inflammation and histamine, the chemical responsible for allergic symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes, hives, and bronchial constriction. One study found that reishi extracts compared favorably with Prednisone®, a steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with potentially serious side effects. Reishi had few, if any, side effects.
comes for those who don’t traditionally enjoy mushrooms. Whether it’s the taste or the texture, they’re just not fans of the potent veggie. With mushroom powder, you don’t have to be! You can get all of the benefits of mushrooms without having to eat an actual mushroom. The powder can be added to your morning coffee, smoothies, cooked dishes, and more.
Mushrooms vs Mushroom Powder Benefits: With all the health benefits of mushrooms, you’re probably thinking it doesn’t get any better than this. Well, what if I were to tell you-you’re wrong? Mushroom powder offers similar benefits to raw mushrooms in a much more powerful way. How much more, you ask? Try a 14:1 ratio
In addition to ALL of this, mushrooms also help strengthen the immune system, in general, to help with fighting off allergies and more. Add mushrooms to your diet or add a powerful mushroom extract powder now before those spring allergies kick in and you’ll be able to thank us later!
Mushroom extract powder is derived from Ancient Chinese Medicinal Techniques. Dating back to 400 A.D. Lions Mane, Reishi, Astragalus, and Shiitake have been shown to improve mood- focus, and lower stress, while Cordyceps and Chaga increase your stamina. These mushrooms are Immunity boosting and cell health supporting. Today hundreds of Scientific Studies have been done on the health and adaptogenic benefits of these mushrooms. Happy to Be Home: Astros sweep A’s and Yankees to go 6-0 at Minute Maid Park By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor

ack in the summer of 2011, I was deployed in Kabul, Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. When you are scheduled to be in a warzone for a certain amount of time, the military grants you leave, which is a vacation in civilian terms. We had arrived in the country in December 2010 from our duty station in Baumholder, Germany and the time seemed to go by pretty quickly. Before I knew it, I was three weeks away from coming home and seeing my wife and kids. But something happened right in the midst of getting prepared to leave. I stopped eating on a consistent basis.
The Astros removed all doubt from the minds of their loyal supporters by winning all six games at home before heading back out on the road to face the Seattle Mariners who currently sits atop of the American League West. It was the first time since 2004 that Houston had swept two series at home and it makes it eight straight games the Astros have won at Minute Maid Park dating back to last year. All of a sudden, the food didn’t taste the same even though it was the same food I had been eating for the last six to eight months. It all just tasted bland and I wouldn’t eat as much. I called my wife to let her know what was going on and she told me not to worry because she knew exactly what was going on. My body was letting me know that I had become homesick. That must have been what the Houston Astros was feeling right before they came back to Minute Maid Park to start a six game homestand against the Oakland A’s and the New York Yankees. Houston was coming off a seven-game road trip to begin the season that left
Skipper A.J. Hinch is very proud of what the team has done and excited to see that the bats have come alive during the homestand. “That’s three days in a row where we’ve had really, really good at-bats as the game’s gotten late,” Hinch said after the Astros had come back late to defeat the Yankees 4-3 on Tuesday. “So, I certainly liked it, the focus and the quality of at-bats and ultimately the production.” One bat that has gotten red-hot since being home is 2017 American League MVP, Jose Altuve. He has shown the

hometown fans that not only does he hit for average (.314), but he also can hit the long ball. Altuve hit his 100th career home run Tuesday night, becoming the 16th player in franchise history to reach that milestone. 100 homers were not enough for the 2018 Silver Slugger Award winner as he went out on the next night and hit homeruns 101 and 102 against the Yankees. “I am not use to hitting this many homers in two or three games, but I will take it,” said Altuve after the victory on Wednesday night. It is safe to say that all the Astros needed was a little home cooking to get themselves going.

In the new book “Sisters” by Jeanette Winter, you’ll learn about two girls who don’t just hit a ball, they smash it. Ever since they were babies, Venus and Serena were very close. They slept in the same bed, enjoyed the same books, and got up at the same time every morning, even though it was still dark sometimes. That’s because their Mama and Daddy wanted their two youngest daughters to learn to play tennis so they could have a better future. Each morning started with clean-up because the local tennis court was always littered.

With respect came new equipment and invitations to tournaments. Venus would win her game, then Serena would win, and they’d concentrate on winning again and again. Venus would cheer when Serena was on the court, and Serena would cheer when Venus was on the court. As the girls grew into better tennis players, they grew into women with fashion sense and power, too. And when it was time for Venus and Serena to play one another on the court, they did it just like they did everything else all their lives: together. Let’s face it: when it comes to the lives of Serena and Venus Williams, there’s really not much left to publicly tell. Certainly, author Jeanette Winter doesn’t share anything new in “Sisters,” so why would your child want this book? Two words: the artwork. Even if your child can’t read the words inside “Sisters,” she’ll be able to tell the story because Winter’s vivid illustrations carefully follow the words, and then some: the telling of the tale is
