COMMENTARY

Bluster Is Not Strength By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

Yet instead of enlisting allies in challenging the Chinese practices, Trump slapped tariffs on Canada and Mexico, on Europe, Japan and South Korea. He’s on the verge of alienating Australia, which has been a staunch ally in relation to China. Instead of isolating China, he’s isolating the United States. Now the Europeans are ignoring U.S. warnings about the Chinese high-tech company Huawei’s 5G system.

Donald Trump

F

or Donald Trump, America First is increasingly translating into America alone. He apparently believes that the United States is so dominant that it needs no friends. Trump prefers to act alone, often on impulse, in conflicts across the globe. He views allies as a burden, international law as an affront. He claims that America is back, more respected than ever. In fact, it is becoming more isolated than ever. The New York Times reports that Trump was ready to impose tariffs on Australia this week, to counter a surge of aluminum imports to the United States to all of 6 percent of total U.S. imports. Fierce opposition from the military and State Department led the White House to reconsider.

ver since special counsel Robert Mueller’s unexpected public statement about his findings regarding Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and potentially obstructive behavior by Donald Trump, calls to impeach the President have picked up considerable steam. As of Monday night, 59 House Democrats have either called for Trump to be impeached or for an impeachment inquiry to be launched, according to CNN’s count. And on Sunday, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, the third-ranking Democrat in the House, seemed to suggest to CNN’s Jake Tapper that impeach-

Trump has launched a long overdue challenge to our trading relationship with China. Our trade deficits with China have been the largest between two countries in recorded history. The Chinese have been masterful mercantilists, manipulating their currency and conditions to capture jobs, expand exports and build their industries. The U.S. -- with our trade policies defined by global corporations and banks -- has been willing to allow U.S. companies to ship jobs abroad to take advantage of suppressed labor and lax environmental and consumer standards, and then ship goods back to the U.S. Profit margins and CEO pay soared; workers and communities in the U.S took it on the chin. The relationship had to change.

Trump trumpeted his NAFTA 2.0 agreement with Mexico and Canada as a great success. Yet this week he suddenly threatens to slap escalating tariffs on Mexican imports unless that country cracks down on the people traveling from Central America to seek asylum in the U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, warns this could torpedo any possibility of passing the treaty. Trump isn’t just isolating the U.S., he’s isolating himself. Trump moved to take the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord that includes virtually every country in the world. He’s repudiated the Iran Nuclear Deal, spurning the pleas of our allies to respect a treaty that ensures Iran cannot revive a nuclear weapons program. His bellicose bluster and military maneuvers against Iran have earned the rebuke of European allies warning against the threat of hostilities. Instead of removing us from the endless “stupid wars” that he campaigned against, he’s gone all in with Saudi Arabia, sustaining troops in

Afghanistan, Syria, escalating tensions with Iran, and vetoing the bipartisan congressional resolution seeking an end to our shameful complicity in the Saudi assault on Yemen. His solo act on North Korea blew up in his face in the failed summit leaving South Korea to pick up the pieces, if that’s possible. He’s ratcheted up the economic sanctions against Venezuela, adding to the miseries of the people there, while the regime-change efforts orchestrated by his aides violate both decency and international law. The United States is a powerful nation. Our economy represents about onefourth of the global GDP. Our military is the strongest in the world. Our network of alliances is unrivaled. Our culture -- movies, language, currency -- spread across the world. But we are not an indispensable nation or all powerful. Acting sensibly with allies, we can have immense influence. Acting erratically alone, we make ourselves weaker, not stronger. Bluster is not strength. Isolation is not freedom. Lawless impulse is not strategy. Trump’s posturing is making us weaker, not stronger. (You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson.) Nancy Pelosi Is Winning the Impeachment Fight CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire

ment for Trump was inevitable. “That’s exactly what I feel, I think we’ve already begun it,” Clyburn told Tapper, adding that Trump would be impeached “at some point.” The impeachment boulder seemed to be rolling down the hill. Then Pelosi held a private meeting of her leadership team on Monday night. And Clyburn immediately changed his tune. “I’m probably farther away from impeachment than anybody in our caucus,” Clyburn said Monday night. “We will not get out in front of our committees. We’ll see what the committees come up with. I’ve said that forever.” Riiiiiiiight. Look, a politician getting too far out over his skis and then adjusting after realizing it is as old as politics itself. But what is noteworthy here is how quickly Clyburn changed his tune -- and how he did so immediately after sitting down with Pelosi and the rest of the party leadership. What that flip-flop makes clear is that Pelosi is still firmly in charge of her caucus and its approach to the allegations of obstruction against Trump -- and the broader investigations into the President’s administration. Yes, you now have 59 Democrats calling

June 6 – June 13, 2019

for Trump’s impeachment (or at least the start of an impeachment inquiry). But that group makes up only one-quarter of the 235 total Democrats in the party’s majority. That doesn’t mean the number isn’t significant, but it does means that it’s still a (relatively) small chunk of the Democratic caucus. And it’s important to look at WHO those 59 people are (and who they aren’t). The 59 are, by and large, the most liberal members of Congress -- most of whom represent districts where impeachment is already very popular. Pelosi knows she is never going to stop, say, New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or California’s Maxine Waters from pushing for impeachment. So she doesn’t spend time trying. Take a look, though, at the people Pelosi HAS clearly leaned on to keep them away from calling for impeachment. At the top of that list is House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler of New York, whose committee would run any sort of impeachment inquiry. In the wake of Mueller’s public statements, Nadler said this of the way forward: “With respect to impeachment, all options are on the table, and nothing should be ruled out.” Which is, of course, very different than saying “we need to begin the impeachment inquiry now.”

www.stylemagazine.com

Another key voice Pelosi has kept in line is House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a fellow Californian. Here’s what Schiff said when asked the impeachment question on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday: “I think we’re going to do what’s right for the country, and at this point, the speaker hasn’t reached the conclusion and I haven’t had either. It’s not best for the country to put us through an impeachment proceeding that’s destined for a failure in the Senate. That calculus may change if the President continues to demonstrate his unfitness for office.” Then there is Pelosi’s leadership team. Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said in the immediate aftermath of the release of the Mueller report that impeachment was “not worthwhile,” although he has slightly backed off that statement. Clyburn has reversed himself over the past 48 hours to be more in line with Pelosi’s preferred position. Conservatives made much of New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries’ comments on a podcast released Monday that “hearings should commence immediately” on obstruction of justice, but didn’t really note that the fourth-ranking Democrat in leadership also said this: “What you call those hearings -- that is a decision that will ultimately be made by Chairman Nadler and Speaker Pelosi.”

Subway Manager Fired For Racist Texts About Black Teen Job Applicant

Newsone.com atelyn Simmons, 17, was encouraged to apply to a Subway franchise by friends who are employees at the restaurant in the town of Spring, near Houston. The rising senior at Klein High School picked up and dropped off her application on the same day. Shortly after she submitted it, a friend sent her a screenshot of a text message conversation with the store manager about Simmons’ application. “Girl brought in her application I’m leaving it on the table for you tomorrow,” Simmons’ friend texted to the manager. The manager then texted back, “OK thanks. How she look?” The friend then replied, “Black girl long dark hair” and then followed that with “shortish.” The manager then responded, “Oh no thanks. I don’t want those people in our store lol.”

Texas Lawmakers Approve Safe Gun Storage Program Despite NRA

BlackAmericaWeb.com awmakers in gun-loving Texas have quietly gone around the National Rifle Association by slipping language into a massive spending bill that would fund a $1 million public safety campaign on gun storage. The last-minute move late Sunday sets up a political test rarely seen in Texas for Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who must decide whether to veto the spending or to ignore NRA opposition and approve the program. An Abbott spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the Texas Legislature adjourned Monday until 2021. The campaign for safe home gun storage is a small item in the two-year, $250 billion state budget, and it was fiercely opposed by the NRA and gun-rights activists. The measure failed to get a vote and appeared all but dead weeks ago. Then budget negotiators — the majority of whom are Republicans — added the funding into a budget bill.

He praised her for coming forward to report that his deputy in the Galveston-Houston archdiocese had manipulated her into a sexual relationship and declared her a “victim” of the priest, Pontikes said. Emails and other documents obtained by The Associated Press show that the relationship had gone on for years — even as the priest heard her confessions, counseled her husband on their marriage and pressed the couple for hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations. She says she was assured that the priest, Monsignor Frank Rossi, would never be a pastor or counsel women again.

She called it Camp Founder Girls, and it offered a chance for young women to venture outside their neighborhoods, get outdoors, and learn valuable life skills. But after Landry’s death in the 1960s, the camp property was sold, and Landry’s legacy passed into relative obscurity. But that will change this summer. Later this month, a group of African-American teachers in their 20s is reviving Camp Founder Girls, after its chief organizer learned abou t Landry through a documentary film on local black history. They hope to offer black girls a summer camp space they can call their own. From June 17 to 22, campers will stay at Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly near Kerrville. The inaugural experience is open to 30 girls.

Police Chief U. Renee Hall said there were “obvious signs of homicidal violence” in 26-year-old Chynal Lindsey’s death but did not elaborate or say how investigators believe she died. A game warden pulled her body from White Rock Lake on Saturday evening. Her case is one of four open homicide investigations involving black transgender women in the North Texas city dating back to 2015, said Maj. Vincent Weddington. Hall said detectives don’t have evidence to establish a connection between Lindsey’s death and the killings of the other transgender women.

In 2012, Elisa launched a non-profit that carries her namesake, the Elisa Carrillo Cabrera foundation, which among other things, gives scholarships to ballet students. Tariffs On Mexican Imports Will Ripple Across the US Economy

CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire t’s not only about avocados and auto parts. Imports from Mexico can be found in almost every part of the US economy. In the first three months of the year, Mexico has moved past Canada and China to become the United States’ largest trading partner, in terms of the value of goods moving back and forth over the border, with about $50 billion a month in imports and exports so far this year. The tariffs President Donald Trump has threatened against Mexico would be broad, covering basically everything coming north across the border. They aren’t targeted, the way tariffs are typical0 ly levied. The impact on business, consumers and the economy could be similarly widespread. Economists, stunned by the Trump administration’s recent action against Mexico, were not prepared to make predictions about how much prices will increase for Americans, because they never considered such an action would take place.

‘When They See Us’ Makes a Powerful Case To Be Seen CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire

Directed and co-written by Ava DuVernay, the opening chapter is a textbook on police and prosecutorial abuse, as the New York authorities bullied terrified and confused teenagers of color into “confessions” that amounted to pointing fingers at others under intense duress. The crime in question was the rape and brutal beating of a jogger in Central Park, with police rounding up the teens in their zeal to close the case. “These are not kids,” prosecutor Linda Fairstein, played by Felicity Huffman, announces almost immediately, setting the tone for their treatment by labeling them “animals.”

T

he miscarriage of justice that surrounded the Central Park Five should by now be well known, but the details of the case, as reenacted, provide the inherent power of “When They See Us,” a Netflix miniseries that’s strongest at the beginning and end and sags somewhat in the middle.

8

The first hour unfolds largely through those interrogations -- presented in spare, compelling fashion -- as well as the mystified reactions of the parents, featuring characters played by Michael K. Williams, Aunjanue Ellis, Niecy Nash and John Leguizamo. (The star-studded roster doesn’t end on screen, with Oprah Winfrey and Robert De Niro among the executive producers.)

June 6 – June 13, 2019

The list of misconduct included police

questioning minors without adults present, intimating that confessing offered “the road to home” and ignoring evidence that might have undermined the timeline or caused the case to unravel. Part two takes place largely within the courtroom, while the third and fourth chapters deal with the years spent in prison, and the by-then young men’s struggles readjusting to society. It’s during that frame where “When They See Us” drifts a bit, laboring to cover multiple characters over a quarter-century span. In hindsight, the narrative might have benefited either from narrowing the focus or having a couple of extra chapters to further flesh out those storylines. Nevertheless, the miniseries offers a damning window into the criminal-justice system, from the media’s willing adoption of the “wilding” narrative to then-private citizen Donald Trump wading into the controversy by advocating for the death penalty -- eliciting a tart rejoinder from a parent who suggests (in what feels a bit too on the nose) that the real-estate developer’s 15 minutes

www.stylemagazine.com

of fame were nearly up. Although the precipitating event took place 30 years ago, as DuVernay’s earlier documentary “The 13th”illustrated, the subject matter couldn’t feel more relevant, with a passion and urgency that ultimately triumphs over any of the structural flaws. It’s especially sobering to witness what the teens endured, then realize that those wrongly convicted -- Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise -- are now in their 40s. While exoneration finally came, the cops and prosecutors responsible are depicted as being largely unrepentant, and the damage -- not just to the central five, but rippling outward to those around them -- seems incalculable, no matter what price the parties eventually reached to settle a subsequent lawsuit. For that reason and others, “When They See Us” makes a compelling case to be seen, and heard. “When They See Us” premieres May 31 on Netflix.

FEATURE Stay Safe This Summer By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

T

he onset of summer means that our children are idle. All of that added free time presents lots of opportunities to get in trouble and be careless, as children get involved in activities to occupy their mind. Swimming, biking, and being outdoors are among the most popular but also raise a number of safety concerns for our children. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of ten people die from unintentional drowning daily. And of those ten, two of them will be children aged 14 or younger. Summer has barely started and we have already seen a number of children die due to drowning in Houston. No wonder it is the second leading cause of death for children. Extreme heat is another cause of death for folks in the summer. CDC says over 600 individuals die from heat-related illnesses yearly. When a person’s body temperature gets hotter than they can keep themselves cool damage to the brain and other organs may occur. Certain groups like older adults, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases really have to be careful as they are at higher risk. A not so common cause of death that is associated with summer fun is bug safety. Yes, those pesky bugs humming around your ears sometimes take a bite on your skin. Summer heat and rains bring on an influx of bugs. The flying creatures carry an array of diseases like malaria, yellow fever, and Zika. Once these diseases spread in the body, severe symptoms follow and some leave lasting effects. Technology leads us to one of our final and growing causes of death, road safety. It is more than just obeying traffic laws but avoiding distractions, especially those that stem from cell phone use.

10

Whether riding your bike or driving a car road safety is vital to follow by everyone on the road. Houston Style wants our children to stay safe this summer so we are equipping you with tips and resources on water, heat, bike, bug, and road safety in our summer safe special issue. Water Safety≠ June marks the halfway point in the year and thirty-three children have already drown in Texas. Image how

Invest in gates and/or fences. A locked gate or a fence can be a great barrier in keeping children out of the water when there is no supervision. A lesson in obeying what a locked gate means must also be taught to children. Make sure they know to ask for permission before going into any body of water. It was recently reported how a child drowned after climbing a locked gate to get into his community pool. Children must be taught to respect locked places and not to enter them for their safety.

how to swim. The City of Houston is giving free swim lessons for children and adults through two programs. Swimwise is giving lessons for beginners age 3-5, 6-13, and 14-adult from June 11-21 at varies locations. H2OSAFE is only giving lessons to children aged 6-13 from June 11-21 at various locations. Both require prior registration through the Houston Parks and Recreation website, apm.activecommunities. com. Harris County has free classes through its Aquatics Program. Visit teamunify.com for more information. Heat Safety Sweating is a natural way in which we can cool our bodies in the heat. Heavy sweating, along with a fast pulse, muscle pain, and blisters, are all signs of the most common heat-related illnesses. All require the cooling down of one’s body temp by moving the person to a cooler place and putting cool cloths on them. However, not all require drinking something cool. In the case of heat stroke, drinking something cool is not recommended at first until the person’s level of consciousness is assessed. Some victims of heat stroke cannot safety drink fluid because they are not fully conscious.

that number will go up after August of this year. Sad to say but summer is the time of year children are most likely to drown. It is important to remember that children can drown in almost any amount of water from a small amount in a bathtub to a big body of water in a pool. The good thing to know is that these drownings are preventable.

Drowning deaths of toddlers are the most prevalent not just in pools but in bathtubs too. A child that small can easily fall over in the tub and drown in a few minutes. So never leave them alone, not even for a second. Also, keep the top down on the toilet bowl to prevent the risk of a toddler falling in headfirst and drowning.

The number one rule is to watch children at all times. At least one adult needs to be designated as the pool watcher, in addition to a lifeguard. A commonality among most children drowning is that someone thought someone else was watching when in fact no one was watching at all.

Another household danger for children is buckets of water like when you are mopping the floor. Make sure not to leave those unattended as toddlers can again fall head first in the bucket and drown.

Heat-related illnesses can be avoided by staying hydrated. The recommendation is to divide your body weight in half and drink that many ounces. Also, drink carbohydrate/electrolyte to avoid muscle cramps. Don’t drink a lot of sugary drinks, which deplete the body of fluid. Try only to be outside early in the morning or late in the evening. Wear cool clothing. The rising heat is the main reason for child car deaths. An average of 40 children die in this manner each year. Parents must remember to never leave their children in the car, even if the windows are rolled down. It has been reported that the temperature in a car

can get as high as 104 degrees in half an hour on a 70 degree day. Another tip is to take a break in the shade when in the sun for prolonged periods of time. Utilize sunscreen. It is your best friend to help avoid sunburn. Sunscreens with an SPF rating of 30 or higher are the best for protection. Make sure to reapply it every two hours. Beat the heat by going to an area

Bike/Road Safety Naturally, when hearing bike and/or road safety the mind quickly thinks to obeying traffic lights, signs, and laws. Even though this is true, there is more to bike and road safety. There is human responsibility. Meaning when operating a bike or motor vehicle one has to block out all distractions to concentrate on the road ahead. Don’t do things like apply makeup, change radio stations, and mostly text while the vehicle is in motion. Texting behind the wheel is one of the leading causes of vehicular death. In the summer, those death total rises since there are an increased amount of children playing outside and in the streets while drivers are distracted. Put down your phone and connect with that person if not for the sake of your own life at least think about the millions of others on the road. Avoid all other distractions for when the car is not in motion.

CDC says there were over 1,000 bike related deaths in one year. Adults aged 50 to 59 years account for the highest number of bicycle deaths but children (5-14 years) and adolescents (15-19 years) have the highest rates of nonfatal bicycle-related injuries. Reduce injuries by wearing protective gear like a helmet and pads for knees and elbows. Make sure to purchase equipment from official vendors, as there are a lot of imitations out there that are not up to standard. When riding at night wear reflective clothing so drivers and others can see you better. Make sure only to ride in safe areas like the sidewalk, bike lanes, and parks. Whether driving or biking obeying all traffic laws is a must. Sometimes bikers will drive against traffic or in between traffic making them greater at risk for injury or death. Bug Safety Living in Texas makes it hard to avoid bugs and their bites. What makes Texas bugs so bad is their size. They are huge! In the summer, the most annoying has to be love bugs but at least they don’t

bite. Although they can’t harm humans, love bugs are the most annoying bug. One has to get their guard when outside to avoid them. Wear long sleeves long pants. The clothing serves as a layer of protection from bugs. But make sure to keep the clothing breathable and loose to not overheat. Insect repellent is the best protection. Use repellents with at least 20% DEET. N-diethyl-meta-toluamide aka DEET is the active ingredient in repellents that are used to repel biting pests by making it hard for bugs to smell people. Water, heat, bike, road, and bug related accidents could be prevented if parents and guardians stay watchful. Never assume children will take cautionary measures for their safety. Parents can stop accidents before they happen with these tips and more found at the cdc. gov and helpandhope.org. Always err on the side of caution and be ready and prepared. Stay safe this summer.

EAT WITH STYLE Cooking at Home with Imperfect Produce By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

O

ne of the major advantages of living in a large Metropolitan area is that we have so many dining choices whether we stay in or eat out. Also, over the past couple of years, there has been an influx of companies that offer subscriptions to their “meal in a box” services.

controlled truck, which kept the produce cool during the drive. This is working great so far, mainly because we’re eating more fresh fruit and vegetables, in addition to having the choice of food, and frequency of delivery. My co-worker and I are on an every other week delivery schedule, which is a “win-win” for both of us, because we often trade, or share to make sure we don’t waste our food.

We’ve tried a few of those subscription services and for the next few weeks, we’ll share our experiences and the food. I’ll start with one of my favorite services thus far, it is called Imperfect Produce. This company is based out of California and in an effort to eliminate food waste; they “rescue” ugly produce, from farmers, because it was not cosmetically suitable for sale. According to their website “20 billion pounds of produce go to waste on farms every year, often because it’s too “ugly” for grocery stores’ strict cosmetic standards.“ So how does their service work? In a nutshell, we signed up directly on www. imperfectproduce.com, were notified of our delivery day, approximately two days before our set date, we were sent an e-mail inviting us to customize our boxes.

12

My favorites thus far have been the fresh citrus: oranges, mandarin, grapefruit, and lemons. Also, the fresh greens are great for cooking. I have tried the cabbage, kale, and Swiss chard. The photos included in this write up came directly from my second or third delivery from Imperfect Produce. The plated food is a mixed green salad, with chicken, cheese, and pico de gallo. The second dish is sautéed Swiss chard with organic bacon and onions. I chose the small box which was a combination of fruits and vegetables, and serves 1-2 persons, and the website shows exactly what food choices

are available. On the delivery date, we received a text message stating that the box was on the way. The food arrived fresh, and was stored in a temperature

Take Your Workout Outdoors for a Fresh Boost By Family Features

your body typically sweats at a higher rate, causing you to lose key electrolytes, like salt and potassium, that are important to keeping your body properly hydrated. Stay hydrated by drinking fluids before, during and after a workout. To mix up your hydration plan, consider choosing a water formulated for fitness, like Propel Vitamin Boost, which is enhanced with 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamins B3, B5, B6, C and E and electrolytes to help replace what is lost in sweat.

s temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, you might start taking your workouts outside more often. To ensure your body’s comfort and safety, you may need to refresh your fitness regimen. These tips can help you safely enjoy your summer workouts:

Wear sweat-proof sunscreen. Protecting your skin is a year-round endeavor,

but when it’s hot outside, you’re more likely to lose the protection of sunscreen faster. Use a sunscreen that is designed to withstand your summer workout, whether it’s a good sweaty run or laps in a refreshing pool. Reapply a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 15 or higher regularly and be sure you’re using enough. Most people need a full ounce to cover their entire bodies. Stay hydrated. In warmer weather,

Find a workout buddy. There’s power – and safety – in numbers. Whether you grab a friend, coworker or pet, try exploring new places to work out for a change of scenery. Having a buddy by your side not only offers security, but also a boost of motivation. Together, you can work toward a common goal, keep each other accountable and encourage each other to crank up the intensity. Time workouts for cooler periods. Avoid exercising during the heat of the day. Instead, opt for morning or evening workouts and be conscious of high humidity levels, which can adversely affect your respiration and lead to overheating. It’s also a good idea to acclimate to the warmer temperatures by starting with a brief workout and gradually increasing the duration over

SPORTS Wrapping Up

Texans Rookies and Veterans Complete 2019 Organized Team Activities By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor

T

he Houston Texans wrapped up their final OTA’s practice at the Houston Methodist Training Center. Now the free agents who were invited to participate in the all voluntary drills will wait to hear back from the Texans for the chance to participate in training camp. Those who do will have an opportunity to be a part of the organization for the regular season. After wrapping up, the team made the best evaluators of that talent (assistant coaches) available to the media to discuss what they had seen during the off-season program from the rookies and veterans. “I think just being able to teach overall general scheme and techniques. I think there’s a lot of carryover between the different positions. We have a saying here, ‘The more you can do, the more value you have’,” said new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly who will move from coaching the tight ends to calling plays with head coach Bill O’ Brien. Kelly isn’t the only one with new duties for the Texans this year. Houston has added quarterback guru, Carl Smith to the staff from Seattle. Smith helped Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson become a superstar under his guidance

pick Charles Omenihu out of the University of Texas. His skills were on display for the coaches to see as he took snaps with the defensive first unit. Omenihu impressed defensive coordinator/ assistant head coach Romeo Crennel and caught the eye of defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

and hopes to do the same for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. With Smith leading the way, Wilson threw for at least 3,000 yards for seven straight seasons, topping 4,000 yards twice. Those are the type of numbers that he hopes to get Watson and help the Texans amass wins in the process. On Tuesday, Smith recalled meeting Watson during the NFL combine before he was drafted. “I remember I got to interview him at

the combine in the train station and he was outstanding. I remember the interview. Sometimes the very top guys don’t go to the train station, but I’m always impressed with the guys that do.” Two key defensive linemen for the Texans did not participate in OTA’s. 2019 All-Pro J.J. Watt and outstanding linebacker/defensive end Jadeveon Clowney were not in attendance which opened the door for rookie fifth-round

“He’s very raw. But like you said, he’s got a bunch of tools to work with. So, we’re just trying to mold him right now to get him how we want him to be, to be a Texans defensive lineman and hold that standard that we have that’s really high at this point. He has the right approach to work. He comes in every day with the right mindset, so I think he’ll get there,” Weaver said. The Texans will have mandatory mini-camp for the veterans, newly acquired free agents and rookies who have signed contracts on June 11-13th. This will be a small tune-up and accountability check before heading into training camp late July and August back home for the first time in two years. Houston spent 2017 and 2018 at the Greenbrier in West Virginia.

“Martin Luther King, Jr.: Voice for Equality!” by James Buckley, Jr. and YouNeek Studios © 2018, Portable Press $12.99 / $17.99 Canada 96 pages By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

per-powerful and mighty but here’s the thing: as you’ll see in the new book “Martin Luther King, Jr.: Voice for Equality!” by James Buckley, Jr. and YouNeek Studios, real heroes sometimes quietly wear suits and ties. Welcome to this history tour. Your guides are Libby (a.k.a Lady Liberty, the statue) and the boy who will someday be your “Uncle Sam.” Today, they’ll take you on a tour of the life of a boy named Mike. Yes, that was his name at birth: Michael King, Jr., but when Mike was a boy, his father changed both their names to honor a religious man. That was also when Martin Luther King, Sr. decided to become a minister. Later, Martin Luther King Jr. did, too.

T

he heroes in comic books arrive in fancy costumes.

Their heads are ringed by bubbles that say things like “POW!” and “ZOOM!” and that’s when bad guys fall like dead twigs from a tree. BAM! All the heroes in comic books are su-

Back then, young King knew that it was wrong to deny someone their rights, based on the color of their skin. As a child, he vowed to do something about Jim Crow laws someday but it wasn’t until he was older and visited Connecticut that he learned what it was like not to be segregated. That trip changed his focus: he was still a man of God, but he’d use his talents as speechmaker and leader to gain civil rights for African Americans.

June 6 – June 13, 2019

It wasn’t easy. King’s house was bombed and, although his family was safe, it was scary. His followers and friends were beaten and bloodied in fields, on the streets, and in marches. His life was threatened and that landed him in the hospital once. And yet, King never gave up; he persevered by reaching out to politicians and other influential people who could help the cause. He planned and marched, even though there were times when he was just plain tired. And he did it until the day he died on a hotel balcony, killed by a man with a gun… Kids who struggle to read, or who claim they don’t like to read may change their tune with “Martin Luther King, Jr.: Voice for Equality!” Parents take note: this isn’t your old-school stuffy history book. Using the younger versions of two historical icons, author James Buckley, Jr. tells the story of Dr. King through comic-book-like illustration and balloon-text, mediums that are familiar to both readers and reluctant readers. Inherently, that makes this a tale kids can relate to, but Buckley Jr. also uses modern language that children understand, which helps get them involved by subtly including them in the emotions inside

the story. Crisp illustrations by YouNeek Studios then keeps them engaged. That makes this a story that could turn a middle-schooler’s groans into smiles this summer, while it’ll still appeal to kids who love books. For either kind of child in your home, “Martin Luther King, Jr.: Voice for Equality!” is a book they’ll ZOOM! through. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.
