The Debate We Need
Jesse Jackson
commentary
“
Tribune Media Services
We haven’t even mentioned poverty,” John Edwards noted toward the end of Sunday night’s Democratic presidential candidate debate. The CNN host, Wolf Blitzer, grilled candidates about Iraq, immigration, health care, energy, gay rights and women’s rights — but there was virtually no mention of the economy, rising poverty, stagnant wages or the worst corporate crime wave since the Robber Barons. Iraq, health care and energy issues rank at the top of American concerns. But so does this economy, which befuddles people. The stock market sets new records; corporate profits are up; CEO salaries are up; worker productivity is up. Yet most Americans find themselves working harder and longer — longer hours than workers in any other industrial nation — just to stay afloat. Poverty is rising in the midst of prosperity. And around their kitchen tables, pressures are rising. Corporations are shredding the promises they once made to workers — stable jobs, living wages, health care, and pensions. The jobs that are being shipped abroad pay more and have better benefits than those that are being created. This economy works well — but only

for those at the top, not for the vast majority. Worse, those at the top have sundered their connection to those who work for them. We’ve witnessed the worst crime wave in the corporate boardrooms in history. Enron and WorldCom are infamous, but the leaders of literally hundreds of Fortune 500 companies have admitted to cooking their books and backdating their pensions. Increasingly, CEOs plan not to build companies over the long term, but to cash out in the short term. At the same time, our trade policies have been made by and for the multinationals, not the nation. The result is the worst trade deficit in history — and what historian Chalmers Johnson calls a Blanche DuBois economy, dependent on the kindness of strangers — particularly Chinese and Japanese central bankers. Inevitably, foreigners flush with dollars are beginning to buy up America, and our jobs become even less secure. We desperately need a broad debate about getting this economy back on the right track. Republican candidates have been asked if they believe in evolution. Democrats if they support English only as the official language. Candidates in both parties rail against budget deficits, which in fact are among the lowest in the industrial world. Our trade deficits are a problem, not our budget deficits. Our staggering investment deficit — in schools, modern transport, clean energy, basic research and development — is what limits our growth. We don’t suffer from soaring inflation and rising interest rates. We suffer from stagnant wages and growing insecurity. And poverty cannot simply be cordoned off as the signature of the John Edwards campaign. His moral courage should invite others to engage, not to retreat. As a society, we all pledged that we would never forget

the poverty and desperation revealed in the wake of Katrina. But the poorest of Katrina’s survivors have been dispersed across the country, most still unable to return. Public housing has been leveled with nothing to replace it. Homes have not been rebuilt. New Orleans reflects the nation. Our cities grow unequal — with the wealthy doing well, the middle class displaced, and the poor struggling ever more. Immigrants with no legal status supply a low-cost, easily oppressed pool of workers, driving down wages on the low end. Why is poverty not on the agenda of the debates? Is it because our national anchors are so well paid they think the economy is humming? Is it because we wrongly conflate race and poverty, and forget that most poor people are not black — they are white, female and young? The Bush administration has an answer for the economic woes that plague middle-income and poor people. The administration is slashing the budget of the bureau that collects the statistics on poverty and well-being. If more children are raised in poverty, at least we won’t know too much about it. On Tuesday, Republicans gather for their New Hampshire debate. They will be asked about the war, about choice, and about immigration. As they should be. But this time, don’t leave out poor children and what we should do about rising poverty. Ask about stagnant wages, and what we should do about an economy in which so few capture so much of the rewards of rising productivity. Ask what they would do to insure that workers get their fair share of the profits they help generate. We may learn what the candidates’ values really are. You can write to the Rev. Local Museum Receives Corporate Support $4.1 Million Capital Campaign
reater Houston Partnership Executive Vice-President, Ms. Tracye McDaniel, received the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum (BSNM) VIP Jacket Award at a recent reception to honor her at the museum. This reception, held at the museum located at 1834 Southmore, included a select group of Greater Houston Partnership members and other business and community leaders, such as Council Member Anne Clutterbuck. The event kicked off the BSNM 2007 – 2009 $4.1 million Capital Campaign to build a spacious, modern museum to meet the growing expansion of the museum’s holdings and its growing programs for community education and increased tourism. Founder of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, Captain Paul J. Matthews, a military veteran and retired executive with Merck Pharmaceutical, was introduced by Steven Eason, BSNM Founder’s Club President and Houston Chronicle executive. Captain Matthews was recognized for his investment, tireless leadership, and extensive knowledge of African American military history. Mr. Matthews unveiled the future building and expansion plans of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, located in the Houston Museum District, two blocks west of 288, and held the rapt attention of all in the reception area where guests feasted on various exquisite food delights, various wines and soft drinks. Mr. Matthews stated that the mission of the BSNM “is to preserve, promote and perpetuate the history, tradition and outstanding contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers and African American soldiers.”
Along with his knowledge of military history, Captain Matthews presented the special Buffalo Soldiers National Museum VIP jacket with its special ensigns and designs to Ms. McDaniel. A roar of approval was sounded when Ms. McDaniel announced that she would take the position of Honorary Chair for the 2007 – 2009 $4.1 million capital campaign. In her remarks, Ms. Tracye McDaniel discussed the valiant efforts of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum and what its expansion means in the economic growth of Houston. “This growth of this museum represents an opportunity for Houston to further demonstrate to the world of having the only museum of its type,” stated Ms. McDaniel. She then gave her strong support to the museum, and encouraged those from the Greater Houston Partnership, and those from the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau to make the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum a part of their economic initiative and make the museum a strong component of tourism. Supporting Ms. McDaniel at this reception were key executives and staff from the Greater Houston Partnership, including Jeff Moseley, President and CEO; Susan Asimakis, Sr. Vice President, Member Services; Russell Reese, Vice President, Communications; Melissa Hensley, Manager, Marketing Communications; April Young, Coordinator, Media Services; Dan Seal, Vice President, Economic Development; Denise Hamilton, Mgr. any so-called comedians have entered show business lacking one essential quality the element to be funny. They have been booed off this stage and off that stage. They have been thrown out of this comedy club and that comedy club. Yet they profess to be comedians. According to comedian Katt Williams the “unfunny” people have changed the comedy profession, and that’s why it is his goal to bring back dignity to comedy. “The issue is that we have comics who aren’t funny, and in no other profession are you allowed to have a job when you’re not doing the work,” said Katt Williams. “Part of bringing the dignity back to comedy is erasing as many

unfunny comics as possible and making sure funny comics really get paid for what they do.” For ten years Katt Williams has been establishing himself as a comic. Inspired by comedians Richard Pryor, Donn Knotts, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Jeff Foxworthy, Whoppi Goldberg, George Carlin, Thomas Marshall, Jerry Seinfield, and Dave Chapelle, Katt Williams is following some of the biggest giants in the industry. His stand-up routine occurred on a whim. An underage Katt noticed that a comedy club in his hometown of Cincinnati, OH, was not checking IDs, so he slipped in. To his surprise he was called to the stage as the next comic. Although very nervous, he had everyone in the club laughing. He had discovered his gift. From there he went to other comedy clubs such as The Improv and The Comedy Club in Los Angeles, CA. The BET Network came calling, television shows soon followed, and so did movie offers. Katt Williams has already proven that he is not one of those unfunny comics. From his three seasons on “Wild N’ Out” on MTV to the success of his HBO comedy special “The Pimp Chronicles” that went platinum six times, Katt is funny. He is bringing his comedic ge-

Always a multi-tasker, while promoting his tour he is also working on the release of his first rap album called “The Dip Set” that will debut later this year. In addition, part 2 of his HBO special “The Pimp Chronicles” will soon hit theaters. He is completing work on a film with Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan called “First Sunday” and has two more films with Eddie Murphy lined up for later this year. In spite of a busy schedule, Katt still makes time for his eight children, seven of whom are adopted. With Father’s Day approaching, I imagine that this is a really special time to be around the Williams’ household. “It’s a celebration that we are all glad theat we all ended up with each other and everybody is happy,” said Katt. For the holiday he said he and his family will probably just relax around the pool and have a bar-b-que. Be sure to check out Katt Williams on Saturday, June 9, 2007, at 8:00 pm at the Reliant Arena. For those unable to attend this concert, don’t worry. Just wait on the release of his new comedy album or pick up one that has already been released. The Super Soy Smoothie
his summer, when you’re craving a cool drink, why not set your sights on something truly worth coveting? We’re talking about a delicious, creamy soy smoothie. Whirl flavored soymilk, silken tofu and fresh fruit in your blender until smooth. Then, pour, serve and enjoy. This is one drink that may taste velvety and decadent, but has a huge health payoff. These soy smoothies are rich in protein and fiber, but low in fat and calories. They contain no cholesterol and no trans fats and are dairy, gluten and lactose-free. They also provide the added benefit of helping you get your 2 to 3 recommended daily servings of fruit. Chef Jim Coleman, host of the PBS cooking show, “Healthy Flavors,” often uses foods rich in soy in his recipes. “Soy is incredibly versatile and adds so much nutritional value to a dish,” Coleman says. “Right now, I’m using a lot of flavored soymilk for summer smoothies and desserts — it’s a simple way to add great flavor and get more health benefit from a recipe.”
Coleman looks for organic soymilk products, such as those made by Vitasoy. He notes that organic soymilk has the added benefit of containing no genetically modified ingredients and no artificial ingredients or flavors; it’s also kosher and vegan. So, the next time you’re tempted to reach for a sugary caffeinated soda or a calorieladen beer or cocktail, grab a soy smoothie instead. These sweet summer shakes offer the same great taste and refreshment – minus the guilt. Soy for Health Soy is the only complete vegetable protein containing all nine amino acids the human body needs. Unlike animal protein, soy contains no cholesterol and is low in saturated fat, while providing important Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Soy is also a great source of fiber and is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Soy is believed to play an important role in disease prevention as well; it has been linked to de-
creased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes. Sensational Strawberry Banana Smoothie This smoothie offers a full four grams of protein per serving and is low in fat and calories. Makes: 2-3 servings

Healthy and Delicious Alternatives Offered for Making Diet-Friendly Picnics
ne of the things that make summer so special is the picnic outing. Baskets filled with a rich assortment of traditional foods make for fond memories, but they can also play havoc with your waistline. According to Cynthia Stamper Graff, author of several diet books and the president and CEO of Lindora Medical Clinics, typical picnic foods like fried chicken, potato and macaroni salads, butter-smeared cornon-the-cob, and fresh baked pies can pack on the calories and send your diet in the wrong direction. Graff says that you don't have to abandon fun summer outings if you implement a sound strategy for planning your picnic. "The secret to summer fun is planning a picnic that offers all of the satisfying foods of the season, yet doesn't contain all of the unnecessary fat and calories that can throw your diet off track," said Graff, who oversees the nation's largest medically supervised weight control program. "A simple make-over will do the trick."
4) Potato chips, pretzels, tortilla chips and salted nuts should be replaced by healthier alternatives such as pita chips served with hummus, fresh vegetables accompanied by a fat-free dip or something as simple as the Japanese favorite, edamame (steamed soy beans in the pod).
2) Use pita or whole grain breads when making sandwiches and avoid stuffing them with large quantities of packaged and fatty meats. Instead use reasonable portions (3-5 oz.) of fresh turkey, chicken or tuna and avoid using mayonnaise and other fat-laden condiments.
5) Alcoholic beverages and calorie laden soft drinks and old-fashioned lemonade should be skipped altogether. Bottled water is a much better substitute as is iced green tea for a dose of anti-oxidants and energy for fun.
3) Instead of potato and macaroni salads, try a lower calorie and more flavorful option like three-colored bell pepper salad with Kalamata olives and onions in a light vinaigrette dressing. Or try a cold green bean salad with sun-dried tomatoes and a light dressing or a tomato and cucumber salad tossed in a light vinaigrette.
Among Graff's suggestions:
PG 14
1) Substitute fried chicken with lean protein alternatives such as a grilled chicken breast or salmon filet. BBQ and lemon-garlic can spice up these favorite proteins. Also, kabobs (cubed portions of lean proteins -- either beef, lamb, chicken, fish) are a fun alternative.
June 7 - June 13, 2007
6) Pies, cookies, cakes and candy often go hand in hand when packing a picnic lunch. Try strawberry shortcake, but substitute the cake with an angel food version, avoid using glaze with the strawberries and add a small dollop of fat-free whipped cream or Cool Whip. Better yet, stick with the perennial picnic favorite, watermelon. Cited as an authority by "The Today Show," "Good Morning Amer-

hat would you do if you were on the edge of losing something important? Would you try to reason with the one denying your wish? Would you fight for it, plead for it, or would you give up and try again later? Would you kill to keep from losing that which you craved? Because of greed, Lance Herndon
lost his life. In the new true-crime book “Redbone: Money, Malice, and Murder in Atlanta” by Ron Stodghill, you’ll see that the greed wasn’t Lance’s, but the riches were. So was the blood on the walls of his million-dollar home. Everybody who knew Lance Herndon – and it seemed as though everybody did – knew him to be a master networker. He had an amazing ability to see potential. He loved to put people together, and he made sure to follow up on every contact. People who knew Lance well knew how fussy he was about his appearance, his schedule, the way he managed his employees, and the down-tothe-minute details of the successful Atlantabased business that he created. Unfortunately, Lance wasn’t quite as discerning about his women. Everybody who knew him knew how much Lance loved women, especially “redbones”, or light-skinned African American women. Thrice divorced, he seemed to collect girlfriends and mistresses like some people collect stamps or spoons. Those rumors about Lance being on the DL? Those were just rumors. When two of Lance’s employees showed up for work in his lower-level office on a hot Atlanta summer morning, they thought it strange that there were no detailed instructions from their boss to start their day. One employ-
ee paged him. Herndon’s mother was called. When Jackie Herndon arrived at Lance’s home, she went to check on Lance’s grandmother, who was staying at the house. What she found sent her, screaming, to the phone. Lance Herndon lay dead in his bed, his face caved in. A bloody pillowcase was floating in the toilet and clocks were unplugged. Forensic evidence showed that Lance had had several ladies in his bed in recent weeks. Which one of them killed him? Do you love a good mystery? Author Ron Stodghill must know you do, because his writing flirts with all the possible killers that might have bludgeoned Lance Herndon to death; unless you’re familiar with this true crime story, you won’t know whodunit until about halfway through the book. Just don’t be tempted to peek ahead at the pictures because the answer is there, which spoils the solving. Stodghill also lets tension build in his recounting of this entire story, which I really appreciated. Time and again, his writing allowed me to be surprised by things that happened during the investigation, the arrest, and the trial, and he made me gasp once last time at the afterword, in which he writes of where the murderer is today. Filled with glamour, passion, and edginess, “Redbone: Money, Malice, and
