COMMENTARY Pell Grants Needed for Low-income Students By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
a small grant -- up to$ 5,775 maximum -- to help pay for college. Most of it goes to families making far less than that -- $20,000 or less. It aids the ambitious children of low-income families in rural and urban areas to lift themselves above their circumstances. With the cost of college rising far faster than incomes, the grant levels are far too small. When first created, a Pell Grant could cover up 92 percent of state college costs, now it covers only 29 percent. Students from families that are not wealthy are forced to take on greater and greater debt to pay for the education that everyone agrees they need. Student debt -- now at about $1.6 trillion -- is greater than the amount owed to credit cards or in auto loans. One result is that a smaller percentage of children from low-income families are going to college, and more and more of those that do go find that they simply can’t afford to finish. America, which led the world in education, now finds itself falling behind, not because the kids are lazy or stupid, but because the so-called adults are making advanced education affordable only for the affluent. Trump’s cuts only add insult to this injury.
N
uts. There may be fancier words to describe Donald Trump’s latest lunacy -- but just plain “nuts” is most accurate. The president decided, overnight, that he wanted the United States to go “back to the Moon, then Mars.” To help pay for it, he called on Congress to cut an additional $1.9 billion

o big or go home might be the new motto for the Democrats’ sprawling cast of 2020 presidential contenders. out of the funds designated to pay for Pell Grants -- the grants that help students from low-income families pay for college. For those children, for the country, for our future, this is just simply nuts. Pell Grants provide students from families making under $50,000 a year,
The administration justifies the cuts -- which are added to the $2 billion Trump’s budget proposal already would cut from Pell Grant funds -- because there is a surplus in the Pell Grant accounts, stemming in part because the Obama administration stopped subsidizing private lenders and because fewer
kids from low-income families can afford to go to college. The administration promises that there will be no cuts in the grant levels of current recipients. That is a far remove from what is needed. The surplus should be devoted to raising the grant levels to make it possible for more kids to afford college, and even that would be insufficient. The Pentagon says the endless war in Afghanistan -- the one that Trump promised to end -- costs about $45 billion a year. Common sense would suggest bringing the troops home, saving the money, and using a part of it to increase Pell funding so that average grant levels could be raised. The country -- and the young -- would be better served if the administration adopted the proposal of Bernie Sanders and others and worked with states to make public colleges tuition free -- as they are in Germany and other advanced industrial countries. Trump woke up one day and decided it would be neat to return to space, as he tweeted, “in a BIG WAY.” Terrific. But to do that by raiding funds dedicated to supporting the college education of children of low-wage workers isn’t making America great again. It is just plain nuts. (You can write to the Rev. Democrats Are Betting Big On Big Plans for 2020 CNN/StyleMagazine.com
The scale and sweep of these ideas -- on issues from health care, climate change and college affordability to voting rights and tax policy -- represent one of the defining choices for the party heading into the 2020 contest with President Donald Trump. Given the tumultuous nature of Trump’s presidency, Democrats could have concluded that the way to victory in 2020 is to promise voters a “return to normalcy” and a lessening of political conflict. Instead, even the most centrist contenders -- including front-runner Joe Biden -- are betting that Trump’s norm-shattering presidency has demonstrated that voters are receptive to big change, even if that means pitched political battles in Washington. “The truth of it is Trump has shown ..that there’s a strong appetite for bold solutions to significant problems,” says Neera Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress, a leading liberal think tank. “Trump’s disruption, and many of his lunatic ideas, have widened the aperture of what’s acceptable in the policy debates.” In just the past week, Biden put out a $1.7 trillion plan to combat climate change, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts issued a $2 trillion proposal to promote a green economy, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey issued an affordable housing plan that could cost over $130 billion annu-

ally and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke released a blueprint to overhaul the political system that included a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress and the Supreme Court. At various points earlier in the race, candidates have proposed a massive federal investment in raising teacher salaries, mandatory federal approval of state abortion laws, allowing felons to vote while still incarcerated, ending the Electoral College, big tax cuts for middle- and lower-middle-income families, forgiving virtually all student debt, federally funded “baby bonds” targeted especially at low-income children, establishing universal pre-K and tuition-free public college, creating a statutory federal right to abortion, legalizing 11 million undocumented immigrants, renewing the ban on assault weapons and, of course, replacing private health insurance with a government-funded single-payer health care system. Even the more centrist alternative on health care -- allowing all Americans to buy into Medicare -- would constitute a huge expansion in government’s involvement in the medical system. The eventual nominee isn’t likely to endorse all of these ideas. But that list testifies to the rise in Democratic ambitions -- and expectations. Cumulatively, the 2020 agenda rivals or even exceeds the magnitude of
www.stylemagazine.com
President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society during the 1960s. It far exceeds the legislative ambitions of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, the last two Democratic presidents. In many ways, the scale of the 2020 Democratic proposals reflects a consensus across ideological lines in the party about one reason for Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016. Though Clinton also offered a wide array of plans to address many issues, hardly any were large or compelling enough to capture the public’s imagination. That led many Democratic strategists to conclude that she failed to provide voters a pithy answer to what is sometimes called the Ted Kennedy question: Why are you running for president? (Kennedy memorably flunked that question with a stumbling answer in an interview with CBS’ Roger Mudd when he announced his primary challenge to President Jimmy Carter in 1980.) This time, Democrats have almost universally concluded that big ideas signal to voters a big commitment to improve their lives. “Incremental solutions communicate that the problem is not so large,” Tanden says. “That is what Trump championed. If you think the problem is big you have a bold solution to it. I think that makes sense to people.”

ENTERTAINMENT Bushwick Bill Dead at 52 Due to Pancreatic Cancer By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
Born Richard Stephen Shaw in Kingston, Jamaica, he was small in stature standing just 3 feet 8 inches tall but he was tall in talent. The world came to know him in the 1980s as a member of the highly controversial rap group the Geto Boys. Know first for being the one with all the moves as a dancer named Little Billy. He transitioned to the front of the stage as one of the most recognizable MCs. Together with his bandmates Scarface and Willie D, they soared the charts to garner several certified albums and singles. Some outlets have even named them as one of the best rap groups of all-time. The Houston based group put the bayou city on the global music scene.
Bushwick Bill.JPG
O
ne incident can change the course of life. Before Bushwick Bill got shot in the eye, he didn’t think he had much to live for. He told us so in the lyrics of his 1992 hit “Ever So Clear.” Claiming the life of that of a misfit and outcast, he often questioned his purpose for living day-to-day. However, music and his personal story changed that for him. He found his purpose and everything became so clear.
Bang! A shot went off and right Bushwick Bill blind in one eye. Although he was blind, his vision was clear. “I had to lose an eye to see **** clearly,” he said in “Ever So Clear.” That clarity allowed him to put Houston on the rap scene map, become a legend in the industry, and craft a wonderful life. Sadly, his life has been cut short due to Pancreatic Cancer. Bushwick Bill died at 52 in a Colorado hospital.
The rapper life was only part of Bushwick Bill. In 2006, he took on a different persona when he became a Christian. He furthered his Christian walk by attending Bible college and mentoring youth to learn from his life mistakes. Another part was the family man. He was a husband and father. In his final days, it was his family that was on his mind. Working on new albums, book,
and documentary he hoped these new projects would be some residual income for his family. “I noticed when most celebrities pass, they really don’t have nothing set up for their children,” he said to Billboard.com. “If I have new music, a book, and a documentary for them, I will have residual income from those things.” In February, Bushwick Bill revealed that he had Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. At first, doctors thought the tumors were benign. He underwent intensive cancer treatment but succumb to the illness on June 9th. “His family appreciates all of the prayers and support and are asking for privacy at this time,” a statement from the family said. Pancreatic Cancer is when abnormal cells in the pancreas grow and divide to form a tumor. It can spread to the liver, abdominal wall, lungs, bones and/or lymph nodes. Rest easy Bushwick Bill. Houston Style Magazine extends condolences to his family and friends.

Chevrolet, NNPA Launch Fourth Year of ‘Discover the Unexpected’ Journalism Fellowship By Stacy M. Brown | NNPA Newswire

or Ila Wilborn, the best part of participating the General Motors’ and National Newspaper Publishers Association’s (NNPA) 2018 Discover the Unexpected (DTU) Program was the opportunity to gain real-world experience while working for professional news organizations. Wilburn, an Atlanta, Georgia native, graduated on May 3 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from zFlorida A&M University, where she appeared as an anchor for the award-winning student-run broadcast network FAMU-TV. Last summer, she joined five other historically black college or university (HBCU) students as a DTU Fellow at The Atlanta Voice in Atlanta, Ga., and the New Journal and Guide in Norfolk, Va., both NNPA member media publications. “I was able to work closely with media professionals and see their daily steps to success,” said Wilborn, who drove a white 2018 Chevrolet Equinox as part of the fellowship. “I was placed in uncomfortable situations, which forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and grow as a journalist. “I believe that I and the other fellows benefited because our work has been published online and in newspapers across the country and I can now search my name on Google and see the work that I’ve created or contributed to,” she added. Each year since 2016, General Mo-

tors’ Chevrolet brand has partnered with the NNPA, a trade association that represents more than 200 African American-owned media companies across the country. The Discover the Unexpected Journalism Fellowship provides a $10,000 scholarship, $7,500 stipend and the road trip of a lifetime to between six and eight students selected for the honor. This year, the trip will take place in the all-new Chevy Blazer. In addition to the cash and access to an amazing car, selected full-time sophomores, juniors and seniors attending HBCUs (who are at least 18-years old), will also experience exciting challenges while discovering and documenting inspirational stories about the African American community. Using NNPA’s professional resources and traveling in the latest Chevrolet — fully loaded with features and innovative technology, DTU Fellows have shared stories, shattered perceptions and jumpstarted journalism careers. The alumni from DTU’s 2016, 2017 and 2018 Fellowships have proven an encouragement for all to Discover the Unexpected. Alexa Imani Spencer, who founded the first student-chapter of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting at Howard University, drove an all-new Chevrolet Equinox for one month as a 2017 DTU Fellow working with the Washington Informer in Washington, D.C. Spencer said she was honored to work for the historic black

newspaper and benefitted greatly from the experience. “In the same objective as the ancient scribal practice of writing on walls in Ancient Egypt, or Kemet, we ensured that the African experience in America would be chronicled precisely as it was lived,” Spencer said. “As fellows, we did not have to worry about transportation, as well as funds for housing, food and other living expenses,” she said. “We were well taken care of and the program took full consideration of our needs in a way that other programs that do not acknowledge the disparities of African-American students may not.” The DTU fellowship was an unforgettable experience and like no other, Spencer said. “To have such an immersive learning experience with media professionals is something that I will forever be grateful for,” she said. “I learned photography, videography, editing and on-camera interview skills from this fellowship and have been able to master my craft.” As one of the first fellows of the program, Briahnna Brown drove a 2016 Chevy Malibu during her assignments with the Chicago Defender. A Howard University alumna and current staff writer at “GW Today,” Brown said she enjoyed her experience, which included live-reporting through social media both in Chicago and in Cleveland, where she covered the Republican National Convention.

“I think it helped me to get social media reporting experience,” Brown said. “I also loved traveling with the program because it exposed me to new experiences such as covering a NASCAR initiative in Indianapolis.” A senior at Howard University who’s majoring in Media, Journalism, and Film Communications with a concentration in journalism and a minor in Spanish, and a budding communications professional and strategist, Daja Henry, a 2018 DTU fellow, said she enjoyed her time working at the Atlanta Voice and The New Journal and Guide, where she got the opportunity to direct and produce a documentary. “DTU was an amazing experience for me because it solidified my beliefs in the importance of the Black Press and self-determination,” Henry said. “The Program exposed me to so many new places and people, which in turn, expanded my mindset tremendously. I also enjoyed a lot of autonomy in choosing and writing stories The program allowed me to do exactly what the name says – Discover the Unexpected.” Perhaps speaking for each of the Fellows, Spencer said she believes it’s absolutely necessary that the younger generations are aware and engaged with the DTU program and the Black Press. “We are next up,” she said. “This is an extension of the call-to-action put forth by NNPA to today’s youth: I urge you to pay attention to the Black Press.”

ctress Robin Givens has played many roles in her life; retiring wallflower not being among them. She burst onto the scene as the beautiful and brainy Darlene on Head of the Class, a sitcom that aired on ABC from 1986 to 1991. Those same years brought a media explosion as good girl Givens fell in love with, married and then divorced, boxing’s former world heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson. The tumultuous pairing was
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Robin Givens picked up the pieces with a string of film roles including A Rage in Harlem with the late Gregory Hines, Forest Whitaker and Danny Glover; Boomerang opposite Halle Berry and Givens’ former flame turned colleague, Eddie Murphy; Blankman opposite Damon Wayans and Head of State with Chris Rock. Steady work came her way, while sealing her reputation as the beautiful but dangerous femme fatale. The line between Givens’ public image and her film work continued to blur. During this time period, she became a mom to two boys and retreated from the spotlight, save for the release of her 2007 memoir, Grace Will Lead Me Home, in which she opened up about the issue of domestic violence, which she admits in the book had plagued her family for generations. This was the birth of Robin Givens, women’s advocate and outspoken crusader against domestic violence. Her
speaking engagements culminated with one of her numerous appearances on the Oprah show in which she outlined her intimate journey with the issue. It is important to note that, according to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) more than 10 million women and men (at a rate of 20 people per minute) in the U.S. are subjected to domestic violence, making this an issue that does transcend gender (though women are more likely to sustain substantial physical injury at the hands of an intimate partner, at a rate of 1 in 7 women to 1 in 25 men) as well as socio-economic status. In the 2010s, Givens refocused on acting with roles on long running daytime soap The Bold and the Beautiful, YouTube Red series Step Up: High Water (based on the film franchise), the CW’s Riverdale and ABC’s The Fix. On June 18th, Givens will shine as female lead, Stephanie Carlisle, in OWN’s newest drama series, Ambitions. Now you’re back with two television shows, the CW’s Riverdale and the new OWN series, Ambitions. I remember speaking with Elisabeth Shue years ago (The Karate Kid, Adventures in Babysitting, The Saint) and she said she went away to just be a mom to her three kids, and when she came back, she felt like the parade passed her by. How did you come back with the thunder? Robin Givens: I don’t know Elisabeth and I don’t know her story so well, but for me it wasn’t only taking a break to raise my kids. It was also a break for myself. It’s true that you feel like you are going to maintain your place in line; like everything is going to stop and wait for you. EAT WITH STYLE Alaskan King Crab Delivers By Yolanda Pope, Style Culinary Writer
S
ummer is in full swing, crawfish season is at its full peak, and just about every weekend there is a barbecue to attend. Now with Father’s Day upon us, how about some crab legs, some big ones to be exact?
name rightly so; the clusters of crabs were at least 12-13 inches long and full of sweet, succulent, and meaty crab. Secondly, they didn’t need a lot of seasoning because the naturally sweet and briny flavors of those claws stood out in every bite. Thirdly, these crab legs were very filling; one doesn’t need another protein when consuming these giant crustaceans.
Alaskan King Crab Company delivers their crab legs directly to your front door overnight. And that’s not all, they also deliver, wild caught salmon, cod, halibut, and shrimp. Furthermore, this is one company that is fishing the waters of the ocean responsibly by only harvesting seafood that is sustainable. According to their website: www.alaskankingcrab.com, “their king crabs come from the Bering Sea, their halibut and salmon are never sourced from farms and the shrimp and prawns are American caught or sourced from responsible International fishers.” So what’s the process? It starts with the catching of the seafood, which is then flash frozen after each fishing trip; each order is packed, insulated and shipped to the purchaser. Once your order is packed and shipped you get emailed a tracking number along with your receipt.
We’ve seen videos from various bloggers holding these huge crab legs, dipping them in butter and other sauces before devouring them, so we decided that we wanted to get in on the action.
We didn’t video ourselves eating, but the photos in the article are of dishes that I made at home with the order that I received. First of all, the King Crab earned its

Cooking them was simple; however, do not overcook the crab, if you are going to boil them, I recommend no longer than ten minutes, and to heat your water first, add your seasonings second, and add the crab legs last. Texans Coach Answers Questions About General Manager Firing By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor
a lot of speculation floating around on the radio airwaves and social media on why the move was made so abruptly. “Cal McNair (Texans chairman and chief executive officer) said it all in his statement the other day. He did a thorough evaluation of football operations and that included me,” O’Brien said to the media. “He was very clear with me on what we needed to do as an organization and a football team.”

Texans head coach Bill O’Brien
exans head coach Bill O’ Brien walked to the podium and looked out into a packed media workroom full of reporters waiting to ask him the million-dollar question every Texans fan wanted to know.
Former Texans GM Brian Gaine
What happened between the organization and former general manager Brian Gaine? In an unexpected move on last Friday, the Texans fired Gaine just 17 months into a five-year contract. There had been
He would go on to answer questions as best as he could referring back to his original statement about Gaine no longer being here. There was also a lot of undertone that Cal McNair is definitely in charge and is primed and ready to take this team to the next level. The best question came towards the end of the press conference when coach
O’Brien was asked about the character of the Texans front office. “Why should Texans fans believe that you guys are all on the right track?” “My number one job is to coach,” O’Brien said without hesitation. “I can tell the fans that we have a group of guys working really hard to get better every single day and we feel like we have improved. We are excited about training camp and we are excited about next season.” With two more days of mandatory minicamp and only one being available to the media, there are still a lot of unanswered questions out there on what the organization will do going forward on filling the general manager role before the beginning of training camp in late July.

Soy Milk vs. Almond Milk: Which One Is Really Better For You? By BlackDoctor.Org
T
here has been an ongoing debate as to which is better or healthier, soy milk or almond milk. Studies have shown that cow’s milk is still the most complete and balanced source of protein, fats and carbohydrates but soy milk has come out on top when comparing the nutritional profiles of soy milk, almond milk and other plant-based milks. It was found to be the most comparable to cow’s milk in terms of overall nutrient balance. There are several differences. Let’s break it down: Soy milk contains more protein than almond milk. It has more heart healthy polyunsaturated fats or healthy fats as compared to saturated fats (these fats can cause high cholesterol and heart problems). It has less sodium than almond milk and both milks are lactose free. It is the only vegan dairy alternative that offers a similar amount of protein as cow’s milk. The nutrient content is also comparable to that of cow’s milk. It is cholesterol free and contains phytonutrients known as isoflavones (a colorless, crystalline, bioactive ketone which are antioxidants and can reduce inflammation in the body), which have been shown to have cancer-fighting properties. Soy protein may help reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
may need to get it from other areas of their diet. If a person is not able to do this then soy milk may not be a good substitute for cow’s milk. If a person is allergic to soybeans they should avoid soy milk just as almond milk may be a poor substitution for cow’s milk if a person is allergic to almonds.
There is also concern about “anti-nutrient” substances naturally found in soy called phytic acid, which can make it harder for the body to absorb and digest certain vitamins and minerals. Almond milk is lower in calories than soy milk and contains more heart healthy monounsaturated fats, which may help with weight loss and weight management and has also been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol. Almond milk has more sodium than soy milk and contains less protein. If replacing cow’s milk with almond milk, the calories, protein and vitamins should be made up from other food sources.
Both are vegan and low cholesterol. These two plant-based milk options are the most popular. There are different brands of almond milk and soy milk in which the nutrient content differs. When comparing the two, some have added sugar, salt and preservatives. These additions may change the carbohydrate content and the calories in the milk. Most brands of plant-based milk will have added calcium and vitamin D to mimic cow’s milk. Some brands of soy milk are lacking an essential amino acid called methionine due to the process manufacturers use to make soy milk. As a result, people

Why do people seek alternatives to begin with? For one, dairy is one of the most common allergens among infants and children. Raw milk has been linked to outbreaks of salmonella and E. coli. There’s also the issue of lactose intolerance in which plant-based milk might be a better alternative. Almond milk and soy milk can replace a glass of cow’s milk. It can be used in your coffee or in your favorite cereal, protein shakes, coffee, tea, etc. but keep in mind it is not a complete replacement for cow’s milk. You will still need to make up the loss of calories, protein and vitamins from other sources. BOOK
“Agent of Influence: How to Use Spy Skills to Persuade Anyone, Sell Anything, and Build a Successful Business” By Jason Hanson
Y
ou just had your trench coat to the cleaners.
don’t know everything… Readers who are feeling a little puckish might be disappointed that there is no skulking involved in “Agent of Influence,” and no talking to your shoe. Instead, what you’ll find in this book is serious stuff, told with a no-nonsense tone.
There are new batteries in your undercover wrist-camera, and your listening device seems to be working well. You’ve even found a perfect hidey-place to watch from the shadows. Yep, this seeking-and-capturing-new-customers stuff is hard but that’s what it takes to get ahead, right? Although, wouldn’t it be easier to read “Agent of Influence” by former CIA agent Jason Hanson?
Also important in the SADR Cycle: patience, and lots of it.
And yet, this is not a self-help book; author Jason Hanson says that his aim is not to “add another to the hefty pile” of such tomes. Instead, he draws analogies between the world of intelligence and that of business, linking espionage to entertainment and science to selling. Readers, therefore, shouldn’t be surprised to see that his methods will take real work – many of them demand that you learn totally new ways of living and moving about in the world – and “patience” is a word that surfaces often. To keep you involved, in the meantime, Hanson offers real-life stories of espionage, covert meetings, and danger of the deadly sort.
Learn “the Art of Elicitation,” Hanson says, and know how to do an “hourglass chat.” Always maintain sincerity. Know your target’s learning style, in order to gain his attention. And strive to try something new at least once a month. This helps you to remember that you

So you think you’ve got it bad in business. That could be true, says Hanson, but work won’t generally kill you, as it might for an undercover intelligence officer. He should know: he spent seven years working for the CIA before starting his own business as a personal safety expert. That was when he noted that business and espionage have a lot in common. Perhaps one of the most important commonalities is what Hanson calls “The Confidence Reflex,” or the ability to be flexible, practice empathy, maintain physical and mental stamina, control emotions, and eye an outcome. The Confidence Reflex proves that you are “100 percent capable of accomplishing any goal you set.”
16
For spy and businessperson alike, it could take months or even years to see success in an endeavor, and Hanson says that learning to use “The SADR Cycle” is essential. Spotting, Assessing, Developing, and Recruiting is “the world’s most effective sales technique,” and it works at every stage of the process. Part of the SADR Cycle is learning to home in on body language, to read a room, and to know when to cut an employee,

So, yes, you’ll learn a lot by reading “Agent of Influence,” but it’s also darn fun to read, too. Entertainment, instruction, a better business – this book’s got it covered.
