COMMENTARY Trump Did the Right Thing By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer the folks supposed to be reining in an impulsive and uninformed president — would have pushed us into another war. Attacking Iran would have violated Trump’s campaign promise to get us out of “stupid wars.” As president, he repeatedly says that “great powers don’t fight wars without end,” and boasts he’s getting the troops out. In fact, however, the war in Afghanistan goes on, the troops are still in Syria and Iraq, Trump vetoed the congressional effort to end our role in the Saudi attack on Yemen, and he’s been ratcheting up pressure and sanctions on Iran from the beginning of his administration.

I

n the last week, Donald Trump suddenly reversed two major decisions. He announced he would not begin mass deportations of those who are living in the country illegally, which he previously threatened to do, and he pulled the plug on a bombing attack on Iran, even as the military jets were on the runway. The reversals stunned aides and allies alike. In both cases, Trump disappointed hawkish advisers and zealous supporters who had urged him to act. In both cases, Trump did the right thing. It’s easy to be skeptical or dismissive about Trump’s flip-flops. In both cases, he defused crises of his own making. In both, he avoided what would have

POLITICAL

been a humanitarian horror. In both, the impulsiveness of the threatened action was matched by the suddenness of the reversal. In both, the reversals may only be a temporary attack of sanity. Critics argue that Trump’s reversals undermine his credibility and sap American authority. Cynics discount the decisions, saying even a broken clock gets the time right twice a day. All that may be true, but it is worth thanking Trump when he makes the right choice. On Iran, he is surrounded by advisers — like National Security Adviser John Bolton — eager to ratchet up the crisis. Even his former secretary of defense — James “Mad Dog” Mattis — was an advocate of taking on Iran. The so-called “adults in the room” —

Trump has targeted immigrants from the beginning of his campaign, libeling those seeking asylum, implementing truly grotesque policies that rip children from their parents and cage them in unspeakable conditions. He vetoed the bipartisan immigration reform that Congress passed. Now he is ratcheting up the rhetoric for election purposes. When White House advisers like Ste-

The face-off with Iran continues. The White House announced it has launched a cyber-attack, will continue to punish Iranians with economic sanctions and is considering various covert ways to strike Iran. The conflict will escalate unless Trump follows the decision not to bomb with a clear plan of action that de-escalates the tension and finds a way back to the negotiating table. On the border, Trump only postponed the threat of mass deportations. He clearly wants to make immigrants a target once more in his re-election campaign. What would make sense is to convene the governments of our neighbors to the south and create a multilateral plan for humanitarian relief and economic development that would alleviate the desperation that forces families to leave their villages and come north. Without comprehensive immigration reform, Trump’s sudden act of common sense will soon be forgotten. In both cases, Trump’s policies are likely to make things worse rather than better. But at least, in this instance, he chose not to follow the ruinous advice of his aides and supporters. At least that is encouraging.

House Panel Votes to Subpoena Kellyanne Conway over Hatch Act Violations CNN/Stylemagazine.com

T

he House Oversight Committee voted on Wednesday to subpoena testimony from White House counselor Kellyanne Conway after a federal agency recommended that she should be fired for repeatedly violating a law that limits the political activities of federal employees. Chairman Elijah Cummings, Democrat of Maryland, has warned that his panel

When the Iranians shot down a U.S. drone, the hawks had exactly the provocation they wanted to begin bombing. Trump initially agreed, but then reversed himself, allegedly because he thought a bombing strike that might kill hundreds of Iranians was “disproportionate.” Hopefully, it was also because he remembered his campaign promise, and his sensible instinct that beginning another war in the Middle East would be catastrophic.

phen Miller reportedly pushed for mass deportations, the president suddenly announced they would begin, and then just as suddenly agreed to postpone them. He may have postponed them simply because the bureaucracy wasn’t ready to act. In any case, the decision was the right one.

would vote to hold Conway in contempt if she ignores the subpoena. Conway did not appear on Wednesday on the advice of White House counsel for the committee’s scheduled hearing. The vote -- 25 to 16, with Democrats and Rep. Justin Amash, Republican of Michigan, voting in favor -- could set up another challenge in court between Congress and

the Trump administration, which has consistently stymied Democrats’ oversight efforts since they took control of the House earlier this year. “This is not a conspiracy to silence her or restrict her First Amendment rights,” Cummings said. “This is an effort to enforce federal law.” “Nobody in this country is above the law,” added Cummings. Earlier this month, the independent Office of Special Counsel sent the Trump administration a letter outlining Conway’s “numerous violations” of the Hatch Act, finding that from February to May she publicly criticized the field of Democratic presidential candidates and sought to boost the Trump campaign while in her official role at the White House. Special counsel Henry Kerner on Wednesday said the office did not make its recommendation “lightly,” saying Conway’s conduct sent a “false message” to other federal employees that they don’t need to abide by the Hatch Act. Trump has said that he’s not going to fire Conway over the alleged Hatch Act violations and White House counsel Pat Cipollone said in a letter Monday that Conway

does not need to testify before Congress. “As you know, the precedent for members of the White House staff to decline invitations to testify before congressional committees has been consistently adhered to by administrations of both political parties, and is based on clearly established constitutional doctrines,” Cipollone wrote. The office has found that she had made similar offenses before. In 2018, the OSC said Conway violated the law during the 2017 Alabama special election for Senate. Last month, Conway mocked that finding. “Let me know when the jail sentence starts,” she told reporters. Rep. Jim Jordan, the top Republican on the oversight committee, called the allegations “ridiculous” and claimed that the special office felt “slighted” by Conway’s dismissal of the Office of the Special Counsel. Jordan said that Democrats “want to focus on Kellyanne Conway’s tweets” rather than “issues that matter to Americans.” “That’s the obsession you have with going after this president.” added Jordan.

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

Up Close and Personal With Soul Superstar Erin Stevenson By: Keandra Scott-Tatum

S

tevenson Talks About Performing With Janet Jackson And Her Hot New Single/Visual ‘Make It Last Forever’ When it comes to the lively Houston R&B/Soul scene, Erin Stevenson is no stranger; rocking the livest clubs and performance venues in the city. As one of the original members of the tween group, Girl’s Tyme, alongside Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, Stevenson continues to make her mark in the music entertainment industry. This soul superstar has traveled all over the world singing with music icons such as Duran Duran, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Ciara, Rihanna, and Janet Jackson, and many more. With an already impressive resume, Stevenson is back with her hot new single paired with visuals that are funky and fierce! Stevenson’s version of Keith Sweat’s “Make It Last Forever” has an addictive vibe that is sure to please any R&B aficionado. From her high energy, stylish garb and bold tresses, to the sound of her upbeat lyrics that embody her dynamic experiences throughout the entire track, this song is radio ready, just in time for summer! We don’t get to hear about the journey of professional musicians and background vocalists often, who can be best described as an engine behind major artists across the globe. Houston Style got a chance to catch up with Mrs. Erin Stevenson-Titus in an interview earlier this week. Houston Style Magazine: I know this might be a cliché question to ask, but, your experience and professionalism with the cream of the crop in music entertainment has lead me to this question. Who are your musical influences? Erin Stevenson: I love Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Tina Marie. Although I’ve had a chance to perform with some of the top modern day greats, I’m an old school type of woman. I enjoy crossover type of artists as well. HSM: When did you know you were destined to be in music entertainment? ES: My journey started sometime before I reached the age of 10. I use to clown and joke a lot singing at family crawfish boils & fish-frys and my uncle use to make me sing “Greatest love” of all by Whitney Houston. The way my family would react, everyone knew I was on to something. An opportunity to audition and be apart of Girl’s Tyme came about but I ended up leaving with a contract in my hand because I felt like I had my whole life ahead of me and didn’t want to limit any possibilities and avenues. I graduated from Willowridge High School and began to study Communications and Marketing at

6

Prairie View A&M University. I was all over the place. I was a Black Fox Dancer and apart of different organizations; I had a full college experience. There was one point, I thought I wasn’t going to finish and I got in my car and drove back home. My grandmother thought I was out-of-my-mind, ha-ha. My dad and grandmother both agreed I needed to finish, so I went back. Upon graduation I worked for Sparklett Water doing door-to-door sales and made Top 10 in the country within 3 months. Shortly thereafter, I was hired to work for Nasa, which was good experience and money, but, I woke up one morning like, Erin, you tripping.. I was living a cool life but not a great and purposeful life. I began to perform around the city opening up for R. Kelly, Jamie Foxx and many other well-known acts until I landed one of my greatest breaks singing back-up for Janet Jackson in 2005.

June 27 – July 3, 2019

HSM: Is there anything about Janet

Jackson you didn’t know until working with her? ES: I really didn’t know she was that shy, a lot of people fake things for their image and Janet is the sweetest, loving & most giving person I know. Even if she is mad, it doesn’t sound like it. She is really-really super sweet and one of the hardest working women I ever met in my life. HSM: How often do you rehearse for Metamorphosis? ES: A typical day could range from 8-14 hour days. There is so much that goes into making an epic elaborate production from high-end visuals, sound and even custom stage props. [Everybody is honing day in and day out to make sure the show runs smoothly] HSM: How would you describe your style?

www.stylemagazine.com

`: I always say if I could put two people together it would be Grace Jones & Diana Ross. What a lot of people don’t know is, I’m a tomboy, I enjoy my shirt and jeans, but I can wear the hell out some heels. I discover a lot of my finds at the thrift stores. Between my husband [who is a costume designer] & I we can pull some outfits together. HSM: What event in your life brought you to your hit single, “Make It Last Forever”? ES I’ve been married going on 4 years now and in this particular song, I feel like people were not telling the truth about marriage. This is my take on Keith Sweat’s “Make It Last Forever”. It’s not all roses, like, oh, I’m blissfully happy all the time. It takes effort, compromise and selflessness. Once you can manage all those things it’s a beautiful things.

HISD Administration Proposes a Balanced Budget and Across-the-Board Salary Increases By HISD Interim Superintendent Dra Lathan

The Texas Legislature recently passed sweeping school finance reform. As a result, our district has an additional $135 million in resources of which $26.9 million is mandated to increase the compensation for classroom teachers, full-time librarians, full-time counselors, and full-time nurses. The proposed compensation package presented to trustees designates $34.1 million in raises for these positions, exceeding the amount mandated under HB 3 by $7.2 million. The total cost of the full compensation package is $64 million.

O

ver the last few months, HISD administration has worked diligently to prepare a sound budget for the 2019-2020 school year that would provide our students with the tools they need to succeed, while keeping our district on track financially. I am the leader of the largest school district in Texas and it is my mission that every employee in the district be

treated fairly and equitably. Our students deserve the resources to be successful and so do our employees. One of my strategic priorities is attracting and retaining top talent and this proposal is a step in the right direction. That is why I am urging the Board of Education to pass the recommended budget and approve the compensation package for all HISD staff.

A smaller percentage of the funds can be used to give raises to the remaining full-time employees, some who have not received a raise in the last three budget cycles. Our focus has been to provide a raise to the lowest-paid employees in the past three budget cycles, by increasing minimum wage twice from $8.25 to $10 in 2015 to $12 in 2017. It is at the district’s discretion that all employee groups receive salary increases this coming school year. HISD is the seventh-largest district in the country and one of the largest employers in the Houston metropolitan area with nearly 30,000 employees. Every single employee plays a crucial role in the success

Neighborhood News

of our students. We carefully examined the $15 an hour minimum wage for support staff, including custodians and cafeteria workers. It became clear that our district would then be operating at a multi-million deficit, over $17 million. HISD is a public entity and we must continue to be strong stewards of taxpayer dollars. HB 3 does not have a long-term funding mechanism to cover the portion of the raise funded by the Legislature, so we must create responsible proposals and reject deficit spending at the local level. The proposed budget and compensation plan exceed expectations set by the state and secures our financial future. I value the work that our employees provide, and my priority is making sure we reward all members of HISD. In order to keep a balanced budget this is the maximum increase I can recommend at this time. Truly, Grenita Lathan, Ph.D. HSID Interim Superintendent

The goal of the innovative camp is to not only build self-esteem and confidence in STEM abilities, but to immerse young students in an on-campus, university experience to encourage them to pursue an education beyond middle and high school. “If you fail, you just keep trying. eQuina Moore Brings the Untold Josephine Baker Story to Houston’s Ensemble Theatre

Other than her famous banana dress or Keri Hilson’s performance in Pretty Girl Rock, today’s younger generations may not know much about the multi-talented Josephine Baker. The fact that Baker spent her youth in poverty before learning how to dance and eventually discovering success on Broadway is definitely an accomplishment to marvel over.

And now thanks to native Houstonian DeQuina Moore, multi-generational audiences can experience Baker’s life story. A graduate of HSPVA, Moore got her start at the Ensemble when she was around 8 or 9 years old. She went on to audition for Spellman and the musical theatre at NYU. As one of three black people out of 65 total that NYU accepts, Moore was chosen in 1998 to study at one of the top musical theatre schools in the nation. Moore is joined by a couple of notable alumni that include: Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier, Anne Hathaway and many more. So at this time in her life, with 9 plus years of hands-on experience of professional training before even stepping into college, Moore was more than ready to go full on star. After graduating and landing national commercials, her first Broadway role would be that of Chiffon in the 2003 production of “Little Shop of Horrors”. Catapulting into the spotlight Moore then goes on to tour with

“Flashdance the Musical”, and her latest tour, The Bodyguard (2016). This type of training, practice, and experience was the only thing that could help bring Josephine to life. In the play, Moore plays Josephine (age 15 to 23) with 3 other co-stars. “Josephine Tonight” takes the audience through Josephine’s relationship with her mother, her husband, along with the ups and downs with being a black woman in America during the 20’s. Known as the first black super star, Josephine Baker proves herself to be a champion. Director and Musical Director/Choreographer Patdro Harris & Chika Kaba Ma’Atunde knew that they needed a strong, diverse lead that could deliver the vocals and dance moves that the Josephine set the world on fire with. Moore prepared for the role by working out 4 days a week, going over her lines 100 times before rehearsing, taking a tap class, and researching Josephine to give you a colorfully live show that will keep spectators captivated. Houston Style got the change to ask Moore a few fun questions for our readers. Houston Style Magazine: Favorite actor/actress to start opposite of? EDUCATION Chevrolet Partners with America’s Black Publishers to Help HBCU Students Discover the Unexpected By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Correspondent

S

ince 2016, General Motors Chevrolet brand and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) have partnered to provide deserving HBCU students with the exciting opportunity to “Discover the Unexpected” about themselves and their communities via a journalism fellowship program. The Discover the Unexpected Journalism Fellowship (DTU), now entering its fourth consecutive year, provides six HBCU students with scholarships ($10,000 each), stipends ($5,000 each), an eight-week fellowship with two of the nation’s leading Black news publications, and the “road trip of a lifetime” in the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. Each year, a selection of four NNPA Publishers provides the fellows with the opportunity to gain real-world journalism experience during the eight-week Fellowship Program. Recently, host NNPA publishers, along with NNPA president and CEO, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., reflected on the success of the program from 2016 to 2018. “The issues of diversity and inclusion are of paramount concern for corporate America. The NNPA has a productive relationship with General Motors specifically focused on providing scholarships and opportunities to the emerging generation of African American journalists and publishers,” said Chavis. “Discover the Unexpected has been an excellent model for highlighting the importance of freedom of the press and academic excellence.” The Washington Informer, The New Journal and Guide in Norfolk, Va., The Carolinian in Raleigh, N.C., The New York Amsterdam News, the Chicago Defender, The Michigan Chronicle and The Atlanta Voice are among the NNPA member newspapers that have worked with DTU Fellows. The Chicago Crusader and Houston Forward Times will join them this year. “The staff of The Washington Informer and I are pleased to work with students from participating HBCU’s who come readily prepared to share 21st century knowledge and tech skills that enhance the reporting and story-telling experiences we offer with the Black Press, including vehicles that make it even more possible to Discover the Unexpected,” said Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes. “General Motors believes as we do — as Black newspaper publishers — that the Black Press is important, relevant and significant to telling the story and speaking truth to power on behalf of African Americans. As a member of NNPA, I also believe it is our duty to pass the baton, as it was passed to us, to the next generation of media professionals and owners whose responsibility

it will become to shape the future of the Black Press,” said Barnes. Brenda H. Andrews, Publisher of the New Journal and Guide (NJG) in Norfolk, Virginia, hosted three HBCU students for four weeks as part of 2018’s DTU program. In addition to assignments from NJG’s publisher and editor, Fellows were given the opportunity to develop their own story ideas with accompanying photos and videos on a range of topics. “I believe it’s important for young

June 27 – July 3, 2019

people and millennials to learn there is great value and purpose in writing for and/or using social media and new technologies in the Black Press,” Andrews said. “To that end, one of my goals was to expose them to the rich history of the Black Press. Consequently, some of our time together was spent discussing the New Journal and Guide’s history since 1900 and the Black Press in general since 1827,” she said. During one session, Andrews said

the students spent an afternoon offsite watching and discussing the award-winning Black Press documentary, “Soldiers Without Swords.” “It was especially heartwarming to hear the DTU team connect the similarity of today’s stories of police shootings of black males and the archival stories they had read about in the NJG,” Andrews said. “Overall, it was a great intergenerational learning experience that merits repeating,” she said. Adria Jervay, publisher of North Carolina-based publication, The Carolinian, called the experience phenomenal. “The interns were bright, eager to learn and driven,” Jervay said, noting that one of her Fellows went on to work for the Obama Foundation and each remain active with the newspaper through occasional article submissions. “Our relationship with the DTU Fellows was mutually beneficial,” she said. “They got to meet local and national celebrities, learn about writing for a newspaper as well as [many of] the aspects of running a business, while we got an upgrade on social media and insight into the next generation.” Jervay added: “The internship was only for one summer but our connection is for a lifetime.” Since the inception of the DTU program, NNPA members have “poured knowledge into the students and have seen their skill sets become more sharpened,” said Atlanta Voice Publisher Janis Ware. “During the first year of the program, a couple of the Fellows were able to attend a rally for then-Presidential candidate Donald Trump. Last summer, the Fellows had an opportunity to interview Georgia Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who made history as the first African-American woman to qualify for the candidacy for the Democratic Party,” Ware said. “Year after year, the program exceeds my expectation because of the caliber of the Fellows who have been admitted into the program as well as the amount of support General Motors gives to ensure that the program continues to evolve,” she said. The students in the program have not only displayed an eagerness to learn, but also a willingness to be challenged while continuing to rise to the occasion regardless of how difficult the assignment might seem, Ware said. “We are thrilled to follow their careers, as many of the interns still maintain an active relationship with [the Atlanta Voice]. We are certain the future of this industry is in good hands,” she said.

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT Jon B. Just Wants You to “Understand” By: Cecilia Smith

here’s a reason nostalgia for 90s R&B has endured, namely because it birthed a body of music that’s simply too damn good to ignore. A legacy that continues to fill seats across the country at shows featuring acts like 112, Dru Hill, Xscape and more. From soulful bands to soaring singers, it’s an era that proudly offered a little of something for everyone, including the golden voiced Jon B.

know. All my career, I was looking for someone to really believe in me and unfortunately I don’t feel like I ever had the proper representation. Ever. Even when ya’ll saw me at the top of my game, I still wasn’t being represented properly and it wasn’t until I got with my wife that she was like, ‘We’re going to do this thing, but we’re going to do it our way now.”

From production for Michael Jackson to writing for artists like Toni Braxton, Jon carefully built his craft before proving he could pen hits of his with the release of his platinum selling debut, Bonafide. Not showing any signs of a sophomore curse, just two years later he would go double platinum with the 1997 release of Cool Relax. Since then he’s enjoyed more than two decades in the industry, and he’s not slowing down, recently teaming up with Donell Jones for a sultry single called “Understand.”

dio, that’s the type of charisma he had. A dream derailed:

Back on the road, during a stop at Houston’s popular Arena Theater the “Don’t Say” singer sat down for what we promised would be a (relatively painless) interview. Warm and relaxed, he shared laughs while getting candid about everything from his legacy and his refusal to go pop, to what it was like recording “Are You Still Down” with the late Tupac Shakur. On stage he’s a professional, working with the stage crew to ensure that the night ahead will go smoothly. After sound check he’s warm and relaxed, sharing laughs while getting candid about everything from his legacy and his refusal to go pop, to what it was like to record “Are You Still Down” with the late Tupac Shakur. Behind the scenes: I write and produce all of my own music. A lot of the songs that you know and love, I wrote those songs. I love to collaborate with other producers though, I like to have more than one sound on an album. If I didn’t have a voice or a calling to be a writer I don’t really think I’d have the same impact with people. Collaborating for “Understand:” Recently, I just finished working with Donell Jones and it was a pleasure to work with someone who has influenced me creatively. There are certain elements that you can’t help but be influenced by. Donell’s been a heavyweight in R&B for years so the fact that he even wanted to do the record with me was a blessing. It was an opportunity that reminded me of when me and Pac got together. Same kind of energy. Tupac’s creative process in the studio for “Are You Still Down” He was a great guy in the studio. A lot of people see the videos and they think

12

he was a hostile person to be around, when it was the exact opposite. He was very much down for whatever he supported, he was down to a default. If you’re going to be productive you want to be apart of something that’s moving on the way up. Everybody in the room that night, they were pumped for us that night. Pac was one of those guys, if you were there and you felt some type of way he would pick up on that energy and call you out like, “Hey man, what’s up?” He would pull you out of your element. This was back in ‘96 so I was deep in my party years, so I kinda got a little loose during a session and I started playing the notes a little bit off and he’s like “Look man. Don’t nobody give Jon no more drink, no more smoke...until he plays that note right. Play that note right homie.” Like he got on me so I’m like ‘alright.’ I start singing like “Girl it’s alright.” I made sure that thing went right on the record. So yeah, that’s what you hear (laughs), the pressure of wanting to get it right for ‘Pac. Cause he was on me watching like, ‘Yeah we’re having fun, but take this seriously.’ His work ethic is really what I like to tell people about because it was just so inspiring to be around someone who lived life like every moment was precious. In the stu-

We talked about getting suits for the video and getting all dapper, and that’s the sad part, because he died two weeks later. Two weeks after we did the record he was shot. I’m in England recording, and it was crazy because I remember I was recording in a studio called Air Studios [formerly owned by “Fifth Beatle” George Martin] and they recorded the Beatle’s early records there. It was an old Catholic church that had been renovated but they kept everything intact inside of the church. So I was in the building in the cathedral part when I got the news. Nothing happens by mistake, everything happens for a reason and it was very hard news to hear. You’re talking about someone I didn’t know that well, so it didn’t hit me in the way that it hit his mom, or his sister, but I still felt something because this man vouched for me. He came out of his own pocket. At the time he was the biggest rapper alive and one of the most popular people on the planet, and he felt it necessary to collaborate with little old me. On refusing to straddle the Pop fence: (Laughs) I gave Justin Timberlake the blueprint. I get to watch these other artists blossom and do certain things I wasn’t able to do because of not having the financing, not having the backing. I’ve always been R&B from the beginning of my career and I’m R&B now. I ain’t crossing over for nobody. They tried to make me into a George Michael type of artist and it didn’t show who I represent. (Laughs) I showed white boys how to get your fade right. When a barber tells me the white guys are asking for the Jon B. (Chuckles), I’ll take that. How motivation from his wife helped reshape his career: She’s the greatest thing to happen to me. 12 years and we have two wonderful daughters. She’s the hardest worker I

www.stylemagazine.com

As a friend she watched me come up and be so frustrated, because “Don’t Talk” went platinum, we made it to the Top 10, but what happened after that? It was like the label just let it go. If anything they needed to keep pushing harder and I deserved that because I was making the record sales happen and putting asses in the seats. People were coming to the concerts, so what more do you have to do to be deserving of promotion and I think it came down to one thing: they didn’t know what to do with me. The state of R&B and why it must be protected: I grew up off of R&B music so I’ve always had an R&B m.o. Michael McDonald was pop, he wasn’t coming out rocking fedoras or to New Edition. The look, the vibe, the way I talk, the way I dress, everything. I was influenced by this culture. Now I see white boys coming out now, putting out what sounds like R&B, but they have no affinity at all, or want to be involved with anything close to Black culture. And that’s the shit I have to say, I do not like. It’s different. It’s real different, as if styles don’t really exist or the culture around the music doesn’t exist. There’s more money behind Pop. R7B doesn’t have the same money behind it, we don’t have the venues to even perform. You’ve got all these giant places, like the Staples Center ,that the pop acts get to perform at. Where do the R&B acts get to perform? Local clubs, etc? Come on man, we deserve more than that. Something he might have done had he not gone into music: I probably would have worked with children. I just love kids and my babies are my life. I really don’t have any problems in my life. I don’t consider promoters, rumors or anything else like that important. What my kids, what my wife thinks of me? That’s what matters to me, because that’s the life I actually have to live. Looking to the future: Continuing to make albums and do shows. Shows are the main bread and butter so definitely catch me live. I have a live band, that’s my thing. I play the keyboards; I’m a songwriter. I like to show what I do. So definitely come out with your R&B ears on.

The Champ Has Returned

WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo returns home for title fight By: Brian Barefield, Sports Editor

T

he energy and excitement of the Kinetix Fitness Center was felt immediately upon entering its doors. Music blaring amongst the loud chatter, I just knew something special was going but it wasn’t until the crowd disbursed that finally, right there sitting in the center of the circle, was non other than the unbeaten Interim WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo; the man responsible for all of the enthusiastic presence inside of Kinetix. Honestly, all that was missing was someone yelling out loud, “The champ is here.” Charlo, (28-0, 21 KOs) who will be fighting for the first time this year, will put his title on the line in front of his Houston hometown fans at NRG Arena against Brandon Adams, (21-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday, June 29, 2019. The fight is billed as the main event and will be broadcasted live broadcasted on Showtime. Charlo last fought in Houston in 2012 in just his ninth professional fight “It’s an amazing feeling to be fighting in Houston. A lot of people think the pressure is on me, but the pressure is just there period. I’m ready to fight

in Houston,” said Charlo as he spoke to reporters. Charlo became the interim champ back in April of 2018 by knocking out Hugo Centeno Jr. He then went on to successfully defend his title by defeating Matt Korobov by a unanimous decision in December of the same year. Some have regarded the twin brother of Jermell as a one of the best punchers in boxing and he has no problem letting the world know it. “The division is mine as long as I continue to do what I’m doing. I’m in a good place. I’m a force to be reckoned with in the 160-pound division,” Charlo said. The opponent for Saturday night’s main event, Brandon Adams, is no stranger to the boxing world; however, it has been a while since he last laced up his gloves. His last fight was in November 2018, where he gained a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley, Jr. in the final episode of “The Contender, Season 5” on EPIX. That win helped him gain a top ten WBA world rating and an opportunity to fight Charlo. “I feel this opportunity is the biggest

one in my career to this point,” said Adams. “This will set me up for much more, and I am ready to face the challenge. I couldn’t be more prepared or focused. I am very dedicated to this fight and everything it’s going to take to reach my dream. I am looking to put on a tremendous performance on June 29,” said Adams. Charlo is hoping that this fight will heighten him for future opportunities. Although he is highly regarded amongst his peers, there have been conflicts regarding television networks that have prevented him from gaining a bigger match. Under the PBC banner, his fights air on either Fox Network or Showtime. While larger names in the middleweight division such as Daniel Jacobs, Gennadiy Golovkin and Canelo Alverez are all on DAZN. As the champ wrapped up his pre-workout media session, he wanted to make sure that we relayed a message to all the fans in Houston. “I’m happy to be in my home city, I’m happy to be fighting in front of Houstonians and giving them another world champion. We haven’t

had one since the George Foreman days, so now it’s a new era of boxing and I want to be the face of it,” Charlo reiterates as he heads over to talk with world renown trainer Ronnie Shields. Photos: Mike Jackson/Showtime

BOOK

“Tech Boss Lady: How to Start-Up, Disrupt & Thrive as a Female Founder” By Adriana Gascoignec

© 2019 Seal Press $28.00 / $36.50 Canada 219 pages

O

hand-up; in fact, start doing so as early as possible by giving your daughters or nieces STEM toys. Know how to hire, be a leader, and foster a sense of intrapreneurship in your business. Find a great mentor and be willing to ask for help if you need it but exercise caution when you think you might need a partner. Don’t let failure freak you out. And finally, watch yourself for signs of stress or burnout. You might need an extra jolt of confidence to get back on track.

ne foot in front of the other.

That’s how you get anywhere: whether it’s a toe-sliding shuffle or a one-two-three-waltz, the only way forward is step by step. Slow-walk it if you must, but you have to keep going and in “Tech Boss Lady” by Adriana Gascoigne, you’ll find helpful business shoe-prints to follow. From the time she was a child, Adriana Gascoigne knew that she didn’t want a 9-to-5 job as an adult. Both her parents were entrepreneurs who did whatever it took to keep the family afloat, and Gascoigne spent after-schools and weekends pitching in. For her, self-employment was natural; even so, Gascoigne found herself working in a boys-network Silicon Valley office after college. Before #MeToo was a thing, she was harassed for being a woman. Undaunted, Gascoigne persevered until she spotted a problem and created a solution, finally becoming the entrepreneur she always knew she was. In this book, she offers advice for “founders” of the tech sort – which, as she says, is everyone now, because almost all “business today relies on technology to scale.”

16

You’ve got this. As business books go, “Tech Boss Lady” isn’t bad. It’s not great, either – mostly because, vif you’re an entrepreneur, you already know what’s inside it.

The first point she stresses is that every entrepreneur, “and I mean every single one,” has “absolutely no fear,” which is “quickly followed by acute urgency to propel forward.” If that doesn’t describe you, says Gascoigne, then “hit the bench and sit this one out.” Stay focused on your goals because hard work “will only get you so far…” Be willing to give other women a

June 27 – July 3, 2019

Indeed, there’s a lot of same in this book. Like many current authors, Gascoigne focuses more on tech start-ups and relies a lot on personal examples, despite an avowal to avoid doing so. Neither can you avoid rah-rah words about goals and hiring, both which are seen in just about every entrepreneurial book from the last three decades. And yet, Adriana Gascoigne’s style is surely appealing. She’s smart and bold, and ideas are presented just freshly enough to capture the attention of young businesswomen who maybe haven’t

www.stylemagazine.com

seen this information a dozen times. They might benefit from it, and from Gascoigne’s no-nonsense, straightforward, steel-fisted warmth, the most. This book can surely be read by anyone with entrepreneurial spirit but it’s really not for men, or for women over 40. For younger women with business-sense, though, “Tech Boss Lady” can be a great first step.
