Letter to the Editor Monday, August 16, 2004 Mark J Bontempo Houston TX, 77064 RE: JOBS CREATED UNDER BUSH CAMPAIGN New job figures and other recent economic data show that Americaʼs economy is strong and getting stronger - and that the Presidentʼs jobs and growth plan is working. The Labor Department announced that employers added 288,000 new jobs in April. In total, over 1.1 million jobs have been added since August, with 8 consecutive months of gains. America has a choice: It can continue to grow the economy and create new jobs as the Presidentʼs policies are doing; or it can raise taxes on American families and small businesses, hurting economic recovery and future job creation. President Bushʼs pro-growth agenda, strong education system, and policies to help American workers gain the skills to secure good jobs are the right ways to respond to the challenges of our growing and changing economy. The Presidentʼs jobs and growth policies have put the economy on the road to recovery, but there is more work to be done. The President has outlined a six-point plan to create even more job opportunities for Americaʼs workers and keep America the best place in the world to do business. The plan includes: enabling families and businesses to plan for the future with confidence by making tax reductions permanent; making health care costs more affordable and predictable; reducing the burden of lawsuits on our economy; ensuring an affordable, reliable energy supply; streamlining regulations and paperwork requirements; and opening new markets for American products and services. Sincerely, Mark J Bontempo

Keyes To Bush’s Word By JESSE JACKSON

Tribune Media Services

A

lan Keyes’ sudden entry into the Illinois Senate race provides a good test. Not of State Sen. Barack Obama, the dynamic Democratic frontrunner, but of George Bush. A couple weeks ago, the president spoke before the Urban League, a rare venture for the president who has refused to meet with the NAACP, NOW, his own United Methodist Conference of Bishops or the AFL-CIO. Bush instructed African-Americans of the error of our ways. He gained wall-towall press coverage by suggesting that blacks are not served well by liberal policies and are taken for granted by Democrats. The president argued that African-Americans would “gain leverage” by splitting our votes and political participation between the parties. The statement, of course, ignored much reality and history. Republicans are refusing to release the names of the delegates to the Republican national convention, in part, one suspects, because the delegates are overwhelmingly white, male and wealthy — representative more of the yacht club than of the country. Bush’s Republican party gained its majority in Congress by making itself the party of white sanctuary in the South. The race-bait politics of Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond and Lee Atwater successfully ran African-Americans and Latinos out of the party, and lured the white majority in. A party led by George Bush, Bill Frist of Tennessee, Tom DeLay of Texas, Trent Lott of Mississippi, Newt Gingrich of Georgia isn’t exactly a party that seems, shall we say, receptive to African-Americans or Latinos. And a president who got into Yale as a legacy admission but labors to outlaw affirmative action for minorities and women doesn’t exactly endear his party to AfricanAmericans. But at last week’s UNITY journalists convention, Bush said he now was against legacy admissions because it was contrary to “merit.” This flip-flop in his position naturally sent university administrators and political strategists scurrying. So Alan Keyes’ carpetbag candidacy represents a good test of whether Bush and his party are prepared to walk the walk, or are simply, as they say in Texas, all hat and no cattle. Democrats have embraced Barack Obama as a star. He is brilliant, well-educated, an excellent speaker and leader. He started as an underdog, but now he’s likely to become the only African-American in the U.S. Senate. He’s received contributions from Democrats across the country. He delivered the keynote address at the Democratic 4 Houston Style

Convention in Boston, providing a national audience for his candidacy, and his speech electrified even a cynical press corps. Alan Keyes is also articulate and smart. He can wear down granite with his flood of words. His views are extreme, admittedly, but no more extreme than those of Rep. Tom DeLay or Vice President Cheney, or Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell and the right-wing base of Bush’s party. So Keyes is a fair test. Will Republicans pay off his debts, pay the rent on his new apartment in Illinois, hire him a serious campaign team and finance his campaign at the level needed to be competitive? Or are they simply misusing him, tossing him as a token into a losing cause? Will Bush invite him to deliver the keynote or at least a primetime address at the Republican convention? Here’s an African-American Republican running for Senate — not exactly a lot of competition for that slot. We can measure how much “leverage” playing on the right side of the field in a Republican jersey provides African-Americans by how the party and the president treat Keyes. Now admittedly, Keyes isn’t exactly yacht-club material, and he’s a bit of an oddity as a candidate. He’s running to represent the people of Illinois, people he has never served in a state where he has never lived. But he only chose to run after Republican party leaders offered him the gig. He considered carpetbagging an affront to “federalism” until the Republicans came to call. But his flip-flop on that is no greater than Bush’s on the importance of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. His views tend to the extreme, to be sure, but only because he says aloud what Dick Cheney thinks to himself. And he’s down the line with Bush on the issues. Crippling medical science research on stem cells to cater to zealots is jake with Keyes. Cutting taxes on millionaires while laying off teachers fits Keyes’ priorities just fine. So the president has every reason to support Keyes, who will carry his views into battle, as soon as he gets a map of Illinois and figures his way around. So Mr. Bush, was the Urban League speech all hot air, meant to generate news for a day? Or are you, your party and your “pioneers,” who can raise millions, ready to ante up? Provide the dough, provide the platform at the convention. Demonstrate that African-Americans like Keyes, who serve at the beck and call of your party and are prepared to move from Gaithersburg, Md., to Chicago on a day’s notice, are treated with the respect they deserve. Keyes may well be a better test of Bush’s word than he will of Barack Obama’s candidacy. We’ll all look for him at the Republican convention in New York.

Molina has been active as Hispanic Women in Leadership President, YMCA volunteer head coach, March of Dimes, Alley Theater and Mexican American Bar Association Board Member, with United Way, Houston Symphony, her home owners association and church but most important to her is her daughter Amanda and the future for all Houston’s children. “I’ve talked with and visited many families in our district who struggle daily to overcome unemployment, keep their families healthy in spite of the unaffordable health care cost, and overcome the distractions that rob our

children of their futures. We must take aggressive measures to ensure that our children are given every opportunity to realize the American Dream. The more we make, the more the government tries to take. Even when we might earn respectable wages, our take-home pay is often inadequate. I will work to reduce our tax burden,” she said. Healthcare is a top issue for Molina. “All Americans should be able to afford and select the doctors, hospitals, and medicines needed to keep their families healthy. “In spite of the many problems we may face in our personal lives, there is no doubt that America is the greatest country in the world. The freedom we enjoy can never be taken for granted. A thriving economy is a cornerstone of the American Dream. As a member of Congress, I will work to develop solutions to fortify our economy and energize the job market,” Molina said.

ith the Kobe Bryant criminal trial now days away, the alleged victim’s personal attorneys, John Clune and Lin Wood have been on a media blitz. Believing their positions in the case were not covered by Judge Ruckriegle’s gag order previously imposed, they gave interviews and/or made public statements of the alleged victim’s position which clearly and intentionally undermined the prosecution’s case and the integrity of the Court. Various comments to the media made by the attorney duo showed utter disrespect for the Court, government and the Colorado state judicial system as a whole. As officers of the Court they intentionally pulled the carpet out from under the prosecution, contaminated the potential jury pool, all by showing on the eve of trial, the accuser will not participate willingly and/or confidently and simultaneously filed a civil suit. All this, despite millions spent by the State in prosecution and creation of an infrastructure to handle same, while Kobe’s reputation was left out to dry with no chance at seeking to clear his name. High profile defense attorney Bruce Baron, has submitted papers to the Honorable Judge Ruckriegle in Eagle County Court, Colorado, as a prerequisite to filing an Amicus Curiae Brief, seeking, inter alia, dismissal of the Kobe Bryant indictment “in the interests of justice”, obstruction of justice charges brought against the accuser’s attorneys, as well as a civil suit by the State of Colorado, via its attorney general, for all monies expended in connection with the prosecution that was intentionally derailed by said accuser’s legal representatives.

Seven Inexplicable Things Customers Do and What to Do About Them

BY ANDRA MEDEA

E

ver feel like customers are out to drive you crazy? It may not be personal. As customers get upset their thinking malfunctions, as too much adrenaline floods the brain. In short, that baffling behavior isnʼt character, itʼs chemical. This is what happens: They donʼt follow simple directions. Under a flood of adrenaline, the brain loses its ability to do sequence. That means steps one, two and three can become a hopeless jumble. If you tell them to walk down the hall, take a right and go in the green door they may get lost at the first turn. Go with them and show them the way. They snap at you when youʼre only trying to help. Flooding people are edgy and get hostile around jargon or unfamiliar words. Think of the last time you had a computer problem and the techie started spouting geek. Wanted to kill him, right? Keep your words short and simple.\ They ignore signs and directions right under their noses. With too much adrenaline the brain loses its ability to pick out key objects. Youʼve done this yourself. Youʼre dashing out the door and suddenly you canʼt find your keys. You tear the place apart only to realize theyʼre sitting right in front of you. This is how a customer manages to

not see the warning on the back of the box, or the sign in plain English posted in the hall. Just point it out and theyʼll be fine. They ramble on and bring in every problem since the Reagan administration. Itʼs the problem with sequence again. They can no longer tell whatʼs on topic and whatʼs off. Youʼll need to walk them through it: Ask “What happened first?” “What happened next?” As they step through the sequence theyʼre likely to grow coherent again. They donʼt listen to a thing you say. Flooding people lose their ability to hear new information. Theyʼre not ignoring you; that part of the brain gets disconnected and they literally canʼt take in your words. Talk slowly and calmly to help them come down. Draw them a simple map or diagram while talking them through the stages. If they canʼt remember what you said at least they can look at the map. They argue even when you agree with them. Remember, they may not be able to hear what you said. You could offer them a free trip to China— it wonʼt matter if they canʼt hear you. Instead ask simple sequence questions until they calm down. Then make your offer and theyʼll probably accept. They make you as frazzled as they are. Flooding is contagious. That means even as theyʼre telling that rambling story, youʼre losing your ability to listen to it. However, calm is also contagious. Keep breathing, keep your voice low and steady, and you can bring them around to you.

Metro Thanks Congressional DelegationFor Securing $12.2 Million Transit Studies Grant

M

ETRO President & CEO Frank J. Wilson expressed his thanks today to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Rep. John Culberson, and other members of the Houston congressional delegation for securing a $12.2 million transit studies grant for METRO. Administered through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration, the grant will fund environmental im-

pact studies and preliminary planning and engineering work related to the voter-approved METRO Solutions Transit System Plan. “We are very appreciative of the support from our area’s congressional delegation, particularly Sen. Hutchison, Majority Leader DeLay and Representative Culberson, in helping METRO achieve its mission of developing true regional mobility improvements,” Wilson said.

The War On Terror Worsens Our Danger

S

ure, al-Qaida still threatens the security of Americans and our allies, but war isnʼt the most effective way to combat terrorism. Instead, the U.S. should tackle this threat through a strong, coordinated strategy that emphasizes civilian operations and international cooperation. The war in Iraq has been a costly diversion from security and reconstruction operations in Afghanistan and blocked the restructuring Americaʼs military forces need to respond better to this global threat. President George W. Bushʼs policies have made the U.S. more vulnerable and have opened a new front and a recruiting tool for terrorists while diverting resources from essential homeland security efforts. His approach to homeland security fails to address key vulnerabilities, undermines civil liberties, and misallocates resources. America needs a new agenda for facing terrorism that secures the nation against attacks and situates the use of force within a framework that respects and reinforces international law. The U.S. must bring international terrorists to justice, debilitate their ability to attack, and undermine the political credibility of their networks. In responding to the 9/11 Commission, President Bush has proposed to create a new national intelligence director and a new counter-terrorism center as well as extend the USA PATRIOT Act. These initiatives represent little more than reshuffling the boxes on organizational charts. The new intelligence chief would not have the budgetary power necessary to coordinate the activities of the 15 agencies that make up the intelligence community. An unqualified extension of the PATRIOT act will only accelerate the erosion of civil liberties that has occurred since the 9/11 attacks. HEREʼS AN ALTERNATIVE STRATEGY: FIRST: Strengthen Homeland Security. The U.S. needs to adequately fund key border security programs and agencies such as the Container Security Initiative, the Coast Guard, and the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection.

The government should also take more steps to defend the nationʼs food safety, information technology, nuclear power plants and chemical plants, all of which are currently too vulnerable. Also, the administration needs to provide training, equipment, and increased support to all levels of government to strengthen emergency response capabilities by fire, police, and rescue departments as well as public health systems, all of which will be frontline emergency responders when and if terrorists attack again. Yet the administrationʼs proposed budget cuts funds for emergency responders by nearly $1 billion. SECOND: Strengthen international institutions. International cooperation is necessary in order to prevent terrorists from obtaining weapons of mass destruction, AND to identify and prosecute the individuals and organizations that finance, perpetrate, and profit from terrorism. In particular the administration should strengthen international organizations and agreements that support the control, nonproliferation, and elimination of weapons of mass destruction. It should also end the national missile defense system (better known as “Star Wars”), and work harder to control weapons material from Russia and elsewhere. THIRD: Defend and promote democracy at home and abroad. Antiterrorist efforts should not sacrifice the very values Americans are trying to defend. Washington must listen closely to the mounting concerns of civil libertarians who caution that the new campaign of counter-terrorism may lead to a garrison state. A state that undermines all that America stands for while doing little to protect citizens against unconventional threats. The PATRIOT Act is perhaps the greatest threat to civil liberties in the country today.

terrorism. This requires looking beyond any one awful event, horrific as it may be, to address the broader socioeconomic and political contexts from which international terrorism springs. Because terrorism is a particular kind of violent act aimed at achieving a political objective, a preventive strategy must also address its

port into growing anti-American sentiment. As a result, Bushʼs global war on terror has, sadly, made Americans more vulnerable in many ways, rather than more secure. Itʼs time to end this war and make a fresh start.

FOURTH: Do a better job of attacking the root causes o f

political roots. Above all, the U.S. must prove to the Middle East and the Islamic World that its “war on terrorism” isnʼt a war on Islam. In the nearly three years after the tragic and criminal September 11 attacks, the Bush administrationʼs terrorism policies have weakened multilateral institutions and transformed international sup-

College Survivor: How To Be Successful Article By Whitney Akers — Photography By Elliott Alexander

T

he sun was shining. The wind was blowing through the trees. It seemed like a good day, but it wasnʼt. It was one of those days that I wished would have never come. My entire luggage was organized in my room. My mom, step-dad, and granny had driven me up to Huntsville, packed everything in my assigned room and now were ready to leave. Now, in my head, I was scared. I was scared because I was going to be by myself for five months. All my life, I have been nurtured, or in other words “spoiled”. Now, Iʼm not the average adult. Most people would be happy to get away from their parents. I wasnʼt. I was terrified. I had heard all the myths about college life, but what I heard was miniature to what I experienced. This is my second year in and I can truly say I am a survivor. When I was applying to the colleges of my choice, I wanted an institution in the state, but away from home. I got that wish when I was accepted to Sam Houston State University. That semester was the greatest and worse semester of my life. I got a chance to live in an upperclassmen dormitory. Freshmen 15 hit me good. I had to learn how to study for 15 credit hours. I had to learn how to wake up early for morning classes. Unfortunately, this was not the worse. Consequently, when my housing assignment was under consideration, I was placed in an upperclassmen female dormitory. I was not nervous, but still had nostalgia. I didnʼt have to worry about greeting my neighbors, because they greeted me on the first day. At first, I thought they were nice, but then I learned that some of them wanted to see what goodies I had inside my room; in which, I didnʼt mind them asking because I am a sharing person. What I didnʼt understand about the dormitory were

Jean SIZE: 3

Page 12 Jeans Layout

the rules. There were rules about boys coming in at a certain time, which many people didnʼt obey. Because, when I was going through my insomnia period, I would hear and see boys coming in and out of the dormitory at the late hour. The hour that the boys were supposed to be out was 9 pm, but I stayed up a lot of late nights and saw so many of the other sex in the dormitory that it was crazy. But, the thing is nobody told. Even if you were not taught, you automatically know about the secret code. The rule I mostly got in trouble about was loud music. I love all types of music and I would blast my music so loud that the dormitory beside mine would hear, but after my first ticket I calmed down. There is so much gossip in the female dormitory. I pretty much stayed to myself, but every once in a while I heard things about people in my dorm, but what I realized was, the person that was being gossiped about was going through a lot of turmoil in her life. The lesson I learned from that is you never know what people go through in their personal lives, so donʼt make matters worse. What is Freshmen Fifteen? I will tell you. It is the worse experience of a girlʼs life. What happen is: you go to college, you apply for the highest meal plan, and you eat until you have gain 15 pounds or more. Scary, isnʼt it? My roommate and I started gaining weight within two weeks. And when we gained our weight all we could do was reminisce and talk about how skinny we use to be. We tried to go to the gym every once in a while, but something always came up that would distract us from reaching our goal to get back in shape. If I had worried about studying, the way I worried about eating, I would have gotten all Aʼs in all of my classes. The way I studied in high school was so different

from the way I was supposed to study in college. I didnʼt know what I was doing. But in college, there are different seminars and workshop that you can go to when you need help with your study skills. I went to an eight-week study skills workshop that motivated me to do better in my classes. I went from a D in history to a C and a C in psychology to a B. Another efficient thing to do was go to my professorsʼ offices and talk to them about how to get a higher grade. Or, if I missed some information from my notes, I went there to get that information. What it takes to get a passing grade in your class( as long as it is not illegal) do it because you are trying to get out college and not trying to play around. There are other activities that go on the college campus. In college, you have an opportunity to attend different organizations or create your own. In college, they want students to expand their minds and brighten their horizons. I have a tip for incoming freshmen. If you know youʼre not an early bird, donʼt get morning classes. That was the worse thing I could have done. I never missed a class, but it was hard to get up in the morning. I wanted to go to sleep in class so bad, but I had a professor that would embarrass people who would go to sleep during her lecture. College isnʼt hard at all. It is really suppose to be the best time of your life. This will be my second year in college and I can truly say I survived this past year because I kept my focus and observe the college atmosphere. Getting the college experience is exhilarating to the mind, but you should take advantage of all the opportunities that are there and just have fun with it.

HAVES…FOR

The season is alive with rich colors and exciting fabrics for her! Plush texture, rich pattern, decorative fabrics and details combine to create the opulent look of the season. This season plays host to an exciting array of apparel for any casual or formal affair. In looking for that accent color to make your outfit pop, look for wonderful shades in purples, lilacs and plums. Menswear tweeds, checks and plaids are feminized this season with an explosion of color, accents and style, and are available in suits, skirts and jackets. Jackets are shorter and defined by novelty fabrics and details with tweed and boucle at the forefront. Skirts with motion are complementing this season’s tailored looks. Look for pleats, gores, asymmetrical seaming, flounces and novelty hems. Shrunken jackets, trench coats and cardigans are the way to go for casual style. Cardigans, this season’s jacket alternative, are shorter in length, lighter in weight and incorporate many details such as flowers, bows, zippers, leather and fur trim. And when looking for that perfect sweater, argyle and houndstooth are key. Cardigans and sweaters look great when paired with the casual look of premium denim or corduroy jeans. Premium denim and corduroy will play a major role in casual wear. Jackets, shirts and jeans are key to this comfortable wear. Corduroy will also add novelty and character to your outfit.

Leather and suede feel great in supple, lighter weights and look great in bright colors like hot pink and orange. When headed out for that exciting night on the town, flapper-inspired dresses and the little black dress are true must-haves. And you can finish off that great outfit with the exciting look of fur detail on jackets, cardigans and sweaters. ACCESSORIES Ladies will step out this season with beautiful and bold accessories including the vintage look of brooches featuring bright stones and cubic zirconia. Linear and geometric earrings are at the forefront and cascade down longer this season adding even more feminine appeal. Gold is an important look, as well as charms, turquoise and pearls. Finish off that perfect outfit with a great pair of shoes for those long workdays or for your evening out on the town. Ladies will enjoy the classic appearance of pumps in round or pointy toe that are available in leather, croco and menswear fabrications… all great looks to add zest and style to that great outfit. Other great choices for style and comfort include the ski-inspired Sherpa boots, moccasins, and flats. This season’s boots look great with lots of embellishments and hardware, and will look great as an ankle boot, mid-length or in the tall shaft look. Look for boots in bright colors such as pink and blue. And for that perfect handbag to go with that perfect outfit, carry a colorful signature, menswear-influenced or croco handbag, or the fun metallic look – available in a variety of styles, sizes and colors. Colors to especially look for this season are those in beautiful berries including wine and purple. And for those cold winter days, throw on a great pair of chic bright and colorful gloves.

STUFF THE BUS! The Varnett School Holds School Supply Drive

S

ome of Houston's less fortunate families have a brand-new way to celebrate the start of the school year thanks to The Varnett School and Majic 102 FM. The school helped the community "Stuff the Bus" with donations of school uniforms and the necessary back-toschool supplies for the 2004-2005 school year. Magic 102 FM?s Kandi Eastman broadcasted live from the school's Northeast location, bringing in donations from across the city and parents to register their children for school. Filling the giant yellow school bus with all the basic necessities a student would need, community patrons stopped by with everything from pencils and paper to backpacks, crayons and art sets. The Varnett School hosted the Stuff the Bus event and enrollment fair not only to raise supplies for needy families and increase enrollment, but to encourage parents to get involved in their child's education. "Parents should definitely take the time to work closely with their children and take an active role in their education," said Annette Cluff, superintendent for The Varnett School. "Through encouraging them with their schoolwork and participating in school activities, parents can help students understand the importance of an education." The Varnett School is one of the largest Texas public charter schools for elementary education "Stuff the Bus" The Varnett School in Houston. Serving grades Pre-K through 5th, Varnett began as a private school in 1984 and received its open-enrollment charter from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in 1998. In addition to providing a strong basis in traditional academics, The Varnett School strives to instill in its students an awareness of and appreciation for the diversity among citizens living in Houston. Major Scholarships Open to Computer Science, Math and Engineering Students at Houston Community College

I

nterested in science? Houston Community College is offering scholarships to students who are majoring in computer science, engineering and math. The National Science Foundation has awarded HCC a $385,000 grant to provide full twoyear scholarships. Qualifying students may receive up to $3,162 per year. This is the second grant HCC has received to offer these scholarships, for a total of $880,000. The amount to be distributed over the next four years is $500,000, and up to 50 scholarships are available immediately. Interested applicants should apply for the fall semester as soon as possible. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. “HCC is excited about being able to offer students who are interested in math and science the support and encouragement they need to succeed,” said Andy Montez, Director of Resource Development for the college. “To receive an NSF grant is an honor and to receive two is a major achievement.” In order to qualify, students must maintain a GPA of 2.5, take the required

courses and plan to transfer to a four-year college. Applications are available by calling Doris Rousey at 713-718-5813 or Ken Holden at 713-718-8067. The HCC Foundation will raise and match the amount of scholarships being awarded each year from the NSF funds. The commitment to double the awards by the Foundation was a factor in the approval of the grant. The Foundation will create an NSF “endowment” and has pledged to raise $250,000 as a running balance to support students who major in math, science and engineering. The NSF “endowment” is the initial fund in creating similar scholarship awards for a variety of disciplines. NSF is a major governmental agency that funds research and education in science and engineering and awards grants, contracts and cooperative agreements. Funding for this grant is intended to increase

the number of students who graduate with an associate degree in science and go on to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Applications for all scholarships are accepted from October through May each year. Awards are made in the summer for the following fall semester. The updated application for each year will appear on the college home page after October 15 each year. For general information on scholarships and the application process, go to the college home page at http://hccs.edu and “For Students.” Click on “Financial Aid” and look for “Scholarships,” or call Sherry Howell at 713-718-8494 for information. The Houston Community College System is an open-admission, public institution of higher learning offering associate degrees, certificates, academic preparation, workforce training and lifelong learning opportunities that prepare individuals in our diverse communities for living and working in an increasingly international and technological society. HCCS is comprised of five colleges serving Houston and surrounding areas.

Powerade and Lebron James Launch “Flava23”, The First Sports Drink Flavor Created By A Superstar Athlete

A

t 19 years old, LeBron James has already achieved many “firsts” – first “prep to pro” player to score 25 points in his pro debut, youngest player to score 40 points in a game, youngest player to score 1,000 career points, and now the first superstar athlete to create his own sports drink: POWERADE FLAVA23. POWERADE today announced the rollout of the new flavor, which will be available nationally beginning September 1st, along with a unique promotional program featuring a LeBron James comic created for POWERADE by DC Comics. This project

was especially interesting to me, because I’m the first athlete ever to create a unique flavor, color, and packaging for a sports drink,” said LeBron James. “POWERADE gave me the chance to put my spin on things, and I love the way it turned out. I think all my fans will enjoy it too.” James was involved in every aspect of the creation of POWERADE FLAVA23, from choosing its “sourberry” flavor profile, to selecting FLAVA23’s signature burgundy color and developing the new flavor’s unique package graphics, which feature a stylized comic version of James soaring through the

Pamela Crawford: The Art of The Relationship

hen Pamela Crawford joined KB HOMEʼs Houston Division in 2002, it was clear she had the right stuff for her position as the divisionʼs director of local government affairs. An attorney by training and a lobbyist by profession, Crawford already knew her way around the complexities of local, state and federal government, and had earned her stripes working on tough issues in the areas of energy and education. But her position with KB HOME, one of the countryʼs premier homebuilders, has put the 34-year-old Crawford squarely in the middle of another challenging environment – the homebuilding industry, traditionally dominated by white males. Undaunted, Crawford has never missed a beat as she maneuvers through the politics of an industry in which an African-American woman is clearly still not the norm. “Itʼs important to me that Iʼm associated with a company I believe in strongly,” says Crawford. “Providing affordable, quality homes in communities that serve the needs of individuals and families – no matter their background or ethnicity – is a noble and important mission, one that I am proud to contribute to.” In fact, Crawfordʼs contributions are vital to the success of KB HOMEʼs Houstonarea operations, and primary among them are the relationships she has developed with elected officials, municipal employees and community organizations. “My role includes regular interaction with leaders and communities,” she explains. “Maintaining good relationships is especially important to the company because it helps us ensure timely governmental approvals critical to our ongoing operations. But just as important, I believe, those relationships give elected officials and other community leaders access to KB HOME

air. POWERADE FLAVA23 will be available in the brand’s proprietary 32-ounce bottles at retail locations throughout the United States.“The POWERADE brand has always been on the cutting-edge of sports drink innovation, so collaborating on a new POWERADE with LeBron James is a natural step for us,” said Javier Benito, president, Retail Division, and chief marketing officer, CocaCola North America. “Because LeBron was integrally involved in the development of POWERADE FLAVA23, it truly reflects his personality – bold, cutting-edge, and unique.” To commemorate the launch of POWERADE FLAVA23, POWERADE commissioned DC Comics, home to Superman, Batman, and other great comic heroes, to create a story about LeBron James that featured his superhero-caliber basketball skills. The comic, entitled “King James”, will be available free with the purchase of three 32-ounce bottles of POWERADE at participating retail locations while supplies last. LeBron fans can also receive a comic via mail by sending three labels from 32-ounce POWERADE bottles to the address shown on the label. Redemption details can be found at

www.POWERADE.com. In “King James”, LeBron must call on his considerable skills and determination as he competes in an underground tournament controlled by a mysterious, secret organization. LeBron confronts and defeats a series of colorful court challengers in exotic locales on his way to being crowned the King of Basketball. “I’ve always enjoyed reading comics, so helping to create a comic of my own is really cool,” said James. “I mean ripped muscles, impossible moves, scoring at will, and beating the ‘bad guys’ – who wouldn’t want to be a heroic basketball player in a comic book?”

Pamela Crawford leadership to use as resources when working on issues or developing policy related to the homebuilding industry.” Crawfordʼs skill in developing relationships has been honed throughout a career focused on the political arena. “Iʼve always been interested in government and the law and how they can be used to improve the life of citizens,” she recalls. “It made perfect sense that I would follow my interest into a profession that allows me to work within a governmental setting to influence policy and create a career that has taken me into every level of government.” Today, Crawford is using her hardearned knowledge of the political world to help KB HOME manage its business and create new opportunities. Noteworthy among her accomplishments is a charitable giving program developed as a result of relationships she has forged with Houston-area community organizations. “The program of charitable giving is KB HOMEʼs way of investing in the local community,” Crawford explains. “Our program is designed to support worthy nonprofit organizations that help improve the quality of life for people in the greater Houston area. In that way, the company is giving back to a community that has embraced it so enthusiastically."

Newsweek Readers Hate ‘Catwoman’ Too Poll yields more bad news for Halle Berry film.

V

oters in a Newsweek.com poll have selected “Catwoman” as the worst movie of the summer. The survey, launched a week ago, collected more than 6,500 opinions on the worst and best films during the summer months. “Spider Man 2” was everyoneʼs favorite flick, followed by Michael Mooreʼs “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which appears in second place on the “worst” list as well. “Shrek 2” (10%) is the third favorite; and the last two spots tied with eight percent of the vote, are “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan” and “The Bourne Supremacy.” Halle Berryʼs “Catwoman” won 27% of the vote in the “worst” poll, followed by Michael Mooreʼs “Fahrenheit 9/11” (16%); “White Chicks” (15%); “The Chronicles of Riddick” (5%) and “Van Helsing” (4%).

Festival

New Orleans Jazz Fest Will Go On

T

he New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will go on, say organizers, despite losses of $800,000 to $900,000 on this yearʼs event. “We do not have the $2 million to roll out the (2005) festival,” Byron Hughey, treasurer of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, said recently. “But there will be a festival. I can assure you of that.” The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the U.S.-led war in Iraq hurt attendance and cut into profits from the 2002 and 2003 festivals. The foundation tapped into its financial reserves to meet its charitable donations and didnʼt have much left to cover losses from this yearʼs event, which was hurt by several days of rain. The foundation is negotiating with Festival Productions Inc., which has produced the annual music festival since it began in 1970. Quint Davis, president of the company, said Festival Productions is willing to help ease the foundationʼs financial woes, like it did in 1972, the last time the festival ended up in the red.

T

he new Destiny's Child album, due November 16th via Columbia, will be a CD/DVD combo that features a CD full of the group’s new tracks plus individual solo songs on one side; and a DVD on the flip side. The group's manager (and Beyonce’s father), Mathew Knowles, made the announcement during his keynote session last week at the fifth annual Billboard/American Urban Radio Networks R&B/Hip-Hop Conference, reports Billboard’s Gail Mitchell. Knowles also said that radio will be serviced three or four of singles from the album simultaneously. He wouldn‚t elaborate on the content for the DVD, but offered a four-year gameplan for the trio's DC enterprise.

TAKE NOTES: A string of solo appearances, including a two-hour ABC special, will precede the release of the trio‚s as-yet-untitled album. The group is booked to perform at ABC’s NFL “Opening Kickoff” special on September 9th, and the network’s “Play for a Billion” game show. Michelle Williams will drop another solo album later this year, and Kelly Rowland’s second solo outing is due in 2005. Also in 2005, Destiny‚s Child will begin a world tour, and Beyonce will shoot films in 2005 and 2006. In the year 2007 - they

will rest. In 2008, the group hits the studio to drop another Destiny’s Child album.
