COMMENTARY
White Supremacist Violence Is Once More On the Rise By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
E
very right we have fought for and won since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his monumental “I Have a Dream” speech 56 years ago this Wednesday is under unrelenting attack and in grave peril -- from the right to drink fresh water and to breathe clear air, to the right of workers to organize for better wages and safer conditions to the right to vote without interference from “enemies foreign and domestic” to the rights of women, children, the LGBTQ community and immigrants.
Hayes notes that the first real terrorist cells in the U.S. arose after the Civil War as a response by white Southerners to the freeing of slaves. When slaves became free men, the power of the white establishment in the South was threatened. The reaction was violent -- with community leaders joining to create terrorist cells -- most of which became known as the Ku Klux Klan. To preserve white dominance, the Klan launched a wave of terror against blacks and their white allies across the South, including lynching, murder, abduction and rape. Hayes cites the 2,000 murders in the state of Kansas in the lead-up to the 1868 election, designed to terrorize potential black voters, with the explicit aim of sustaining white power.
But it’s not just our rights that are in danger. It is our very lives. After the horrendous mass shooting in El Paso by a white supremacist, who drove more than 600 miles to the city with the explicit purpose of slaughtering Latinos in response to the mythical “invasion” Donald Trump and the right ranted about -- new attention has been paid to the growing violence of white supremacists. In the few weeks since El Paso, six white supremacists have been arrested for plotting violent attacks. The Anti-Defamation League reports that white extremists killed 50 people last year -- people of all races.
When Ulysses S. Grant became president, Congress passed legislation in 1870 -- the Enforcement Acts -- that empowered the federal government to respond to the wave of terror. For the first time, the newly created Department of Justice began prosecuting the Klan in federal courts, backed by the federal troops on the ground in the South. They made great progress against the Klan until the political compromise that led to the withdrawal of federal troops and the reassertion of “states’ rights.” That opened the floodgates to a wave of terrorist attacks launched by the Klan and others against blacks that enforced apartheid across the South.
Some compare the threat posed by white supremacists here at home to the terrorist threat posed by ISIS or al-Qaida. What too often is overlooked as MSNBC Commentator Chris Hayes noted in his show last Friday, is that white terrorist violence has been part of the American experience from the beginning.
POLITICAL
A
White terrorism goes hand in hand
Slave patrol militias -- made up of volunteers from the leading slave-owning families of the South -- were created to police the plantations, to track down runaway slaves and to put down any insurrection. Again, violence -- from whipping to murder -- was employed routinely by the slave patrols. The Second Amendment -- the right of people to join militias and bear arms -- was added to the Constitution in large part to protect the right of slave owners to sustain the slave patrol militias. In 1788, when Virginia met to consider ratification of the Constitution, slave owners attacked the Constitution for giving the federal government the right to organize militias. At the time, slaves outnumbered the white population in much of eastern Virginia. James Madison wrote the Second Amendment largely to protect the rights of slave owners to enforce the reign of terror against slaves in the South. It had nothing to do with the right of individuals to bear arms, because blacks -- free or enslaved -- were prohibited from owning and bearing arms across the South.
As Hayes argues, when the federal government acts to condemn and to prosecute this domestic terrorism, it can largely stamp it out. But when it fans the flames or turns its back or leaves it to the states that terrorism can easily get out of control. Today, America is still wrestling with how and whether it will grow out of its racial divides. By fanning the flames of those divides, Trump is dangerously choosing to feed an increasingly violent white supremacist reaction. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

much more reform to end the era of mass incarceration. It’s a period that began in the early 1970s – just after the civil rights movement – when President Richard Nixon declared a “war on drugs” following a “law and order” presidential campaign calculated to appeal to white anxieties about the changing social order. In the four decades that followed, the nation’s incarceration rate more than quadrupled, making the United States the world leader, by far, in the percentage of its residents behind bars. The prison and

jail population rose seven-fold during this period, reaching 2.23 million by 2012. The SPLC and many other advocates have shed light on how the criminal justice system criminalizes the poor and people of color and incarcerates them at disproportionate rates to feed what’s been called the “prison industrial complex.” As the societal cost of mass incarceration has become clear, even conservative lawmakers in the Deep South have begun to embrace change. Last year, Congress overwhelmingly passed modest, bipartisan reforms. Now, however, this progress is endangered by President Donald Trump, who is intent on filling up the nation’s jails and prisons with immigrants. For the first time in U.S. history, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is detaining more than 50,000 people each day, at a cost of at least $7.4 billion annually. Over the past year, ICE has consistently incarcerated more people than the limit set by Congress, currently about 46,000. These immigrants are held in jails and prisons, often in brutal conditions, even though the charges they’re facing are civil, not criminal. Many are simply asylum seekers who have every right to seek refuge in the United States. Trump’s policies have been a panacea for the private prison industry, which was

The Changing Demographics of Mass Incarceration
fter decades of constrAucting a system of mass incarceration, it appears that our nation is beginning to turn the tide. Some of the Deep South states that incarcerate the highest percentage of their residents – like Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi – have enacted reforms that are beginning to bring down their prison populations. At the same time, the federal prison population has decreased by 40,000 since peaking at 219,000 in 2013. But it’s just a beginning. It will take

losing contracts after years of poor results, inhumane conditions and no cost savings. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that the federal Bureau of Prisons would phase out its contracts with private companies, though the policy exempted ICE facilities. That same day, the stock prices of GEO Group and CoreCivic, the two leading prison companies, fell by 39 and 35 percent, respectively. Then, Trump came along. A day after the election, CoreCivic’s stock soared by 43 percent. GEO’s was up 30 percent within a week. There was good reason for their investors’ optimism. Less than a week into the Trump administration, Attorney General Jeff Sessions reversed the Obama policy. Then Trump unleashed ICE to begin sweeping up immigrants across the country and sending them to remote prisons, mostly operated by private companies. Later on, he implemented asylum policies that resulted in long stays in detention for thousands of people who present themselves at the border. ICE has long relied, to at least some extent, on for-profit companies to incarcerate immigrants. But that reliance has accelerated in recent years and grown more under Trump.

The scenery is picturesque as the love of your life utters those four little life-changing words filled with passion, power, and purpose, “Will you marry me?” And as your eyes get cloudy from tears you get a glance at your ring and melt. It’s the moment a majority of women hope and pray for and apparently some men too. Millennials are always changing the game and here is something else that they are adding their flair to, men engagement. That was not a typo. More and more millennial are riding the trend stating they want the world to know that they are engaged too. The idea is that after the man proposes with the engagement ring, the woman, in turn, proposes to the guy with his own ring. It is a trend that started growing in popularity when male same sex couples starting wearing engagement rings to show their commitment to each other.

White Or Not: Wedding Dress Designer Greggs Takes Tradition Contemporary By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Style Managing Editor
include the couple’s love story in the design of the gown. The tale of boy meets girl was painted on fabric and that fabric was used to make the gown. It has been the most romantic, beautiful, and unusual idea that Greggs has had to date, For those brides who are unsure about the look, shape, and feel of their gown, Greggs has some universal tips. Most gowns that are A-Line or have an empire waist are two styles that generally look good on all body types. The fabric can be an array of materials. Personally, Greggs prefers silk cotton blends, silk satin, or double face satin. But she is quick to say that is totally a decision up to the bride because it depends on the bride’s vibe. Far too often brides will purchase a
Melissa J. Greggs
The idea of the first draft starts to formulate at a young age. As your opinion changes, adjustments are made with the passage of time. Finally, the moment comes when the final rendition is made. Some call it the most important garment that you will ever wear. It’s your wedding day attire. Be it long or short, dress or pants, white or colored, your wedding day, of all things, must be special, unique, and make you feel amazing. Designer and stylist Melissa J. Greggs, the founder of Jenise Gregg Couture, has made the dreams of countless brides come true with the gown that they have long for. She specializes in giving the bride what she wants since she finds some tend to want to lean to the opinion of their entourage instead of what’s in their heart. Shopping for your wedding gown is a time for you to think selfishly by focusing on what you want and like. It is an experience that is all about you. “Find a gown that you love, not something everyone else wants to see you in. This is your moment to embrace your dreams,” commented Greggs.
dress. Secondly, you have something tailored to fit your body” Greggs continued, “Another advantage would be co-creating. I allow my fashion dolls or clients to be a part of the process. I want them to fall in love with their gown so that they wear it, and it doesn’t wear them.”
Starting the process of bringing your dreams out of your head to design sketch is an interactive process with Greggs. She likes to push the envelope and works best when clients give her free reign. After finding out how the bride wants to feel and look on her special day, Greggs goes to work designing around those ideas. Greggs admits, “I’m a hopeless romantic and l love to test boundaries, so that helps me design and sometimes pull my clients outside of their comfort zone.” Testing the waters in this matter allows Greggs to use all of her creative juices to craft a look that is not just unique but bold, daring and most certainly different.
Greggs, who on average designs gowns for about twelve brides a year, has a seen a little of everything go down the aisle. She takes great care in consulting with brides giving them all of her attention to them personally and to the design of their gown. And she does this simultaneously while working with other clients wanting custom designed attire for various events. Greggs’ goal is to give all clients quality work. And since she is suck a stickler for details she notices the finer points like how quickly leaving that wedding aisle is tradition. Brides today are really into creating signature looks that speak more to their personal style than tradition. “I think brides are no longer following the rules of tradition. I think they are adding their own touch. It’s no longer about wearing white; it’s about how they feel! You can be a beautiful bride and in a no tradition gown. Trust me I’m here for going against the grain and expressing yourself through fashion,” laughed Greggs as she told me about an upcoming wedding she is in where the bride is showing her contemporary side with a colored wedding gown and putting her bridesmaids in jumpers instead of dresses.
Being different and one-of-kind is the best part of getting a custom gown. One can guarantee that no other bride will have your distinctive look. “No one wants to see another person in their

dress or get one made and will not totally love everything about how they look in a particular gown. Turning to weight loss as their first solution to fix what they eyes see, Greggs issues a warning. Be wary about how your weight can redistribute when you start exercising and dieting to get your desired wedding fit look. “Even though you are losing weight, you are also creating muscle mass which the weight can be redistributed and mess up the way a gown fits,” said Greggs. If you are a woman who is uninhibited, confident, elegant, and lives on the edge then Melissa Greggs is the designer for you. Not strictly for your wedding daydreams but for the all the catwalks that beacon your presence in life for that is

Adding real dairy milk to afternoon snack time is an easy way to get kids nutrients they need to grow up strong, which is one less thing for parents to worry about. “The great thing about milk is that kids already love it, so it’s an easy way to get protein and other essential nutrients they need to fuel their after-school activities and meals,” pediatrician Dr. Ilan Shapiro said. “It’s not a battle to get them to drink it like so many foods can be.” You can make the most of snack time
with simple, fun recipe ideas like Harvest Fruit and Oat Energy Bites, which are a quick way to fuel up. Pairing these with an 8-ounce glass of real milk provides protein and essential nutrients kids need to power through after-school homework or activities. Snacking recipes are not only easy to make, but also easy to plan. For more tasty on-the-go recipe ideas to try this back-to-school season, and to shop for ingredients, visit milklife.com. Flirting With a Ketogenic Diet for Weight Loss and Health By Chef Gerard Viverito
29 – September www.
gazine.com Chef Gerard Viverito - Special to Style
L
ike most Americans, there came a time when I started putting on weight, to the tune of about a pound a year. The weight crept up on me, so slowly that I barely noticed. Then I was laid up with Lyme Disease and my weight really ballooned! Last year, I was looking at pictures from my last vacation and wondered, “Who is this person next to my beautiful wife?” I wanted a do-over. I wanted this change in my eating patterns to last. For me, the answer was a ketogenic diet. It wasn’t easy at first. Sugar happens to be my favorite food group. But one of the first things I did was drop desserts. I also stopped eating anything with a crunch (made with refined sugars and flours). I began cooking with only healthy, better-for-you oils, primarily Malaysian palm oil, extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil. I’ve also been exercising daily. I’m seeing drastic changes. I no longer come home from work and need a 20-minute power nap. My blood sugar has leveled out. I look better and feel better. Keto Cycling / Flirting with Keto Although there are a lot of keto products on the market, it can be hard to stay on the keto diet. And it’s easy to make the mistake of eating lots of protein and very little fat, which is a big mistake. That can knock your body right out of nutritional
ketosis. If staying on keto full time is too demanding, there are a few options that might work for you. • Intermittent fasting. This is a way to dip your toe into the keto world. If you go on an 18-hour fast, you can stimulate ketosis. Ideally your body will be running on fat calories (ketones). Then maybe try a keto cleanse, which is basically following the keto diet for a few days or weeks. • Keto cycling/Flirting with keto. A lot of keto advocates are into this. They follow a ketogenic diet for three to four weeks, a few times a year. It can be very therapeutic. Think of keto cycling as hitting the reset button on your metabolism. It helps jumpstart your weight loss. Additional keto tips and strategies • Don’t fall for the water weight myth. Some people will tell you ‑that the first pounds you drop when you stop eating carbs are nothing but water weight. • Be discriminating about which fats you eat. As Jonny put it: Your body doesn’t care if you’re eating corn oil that’s been refried 25 times or the highest quality Malaysian palm oil. Either one will raise your ketones. But one’s a junk food and one’s a health food. Junky, unhealthy fats will just wreck your health in other ways. For one thing: They are highly inflammatory. I use Malaysian palm oil for cooking. It is cholesterol and flavor neutral, it stands up well to high heat, and it contains nutrients such as vitamin E tocotrienols that are good for your heart, brain and liver. Stay away from corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil and yes, soybean oil too! • Track your dietary fiber intake. One of the drawbacks to a keto diet is that it is low in dietary fiber. This can be a problem since most Americans are already fiber deficient. Consider supplementing with a high-quality fiber supplement, such as Sunfiber, that won’t cause extra gas or bloating. I like Sunfiber because it is odor-free, taste-free and won’t change the consistency of whatever I’m cooking. I can add it to just about any recipe. • Distract yourself when cravings hit. There’s a lot of mental stuff going on in the beginning. I missed my treats and food rewards. A lot of success with any change in your eating patterns

Labor Day Classic: Deeper Than a Rivalry By Nicole Lynne Gray, Style Feature Writer

o be clear: I’m so glad I went to PVU! I’m so glad I went to PVU! Singing glory hallelujah, I went to PVU!! If you’ve ever attended or have otherwise affiliated with a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), then you likely recognize the tune in my intro. Beyond simple recognition, the tune may even evoke a level of nostalgia unparalleled by thoughts of any other period in your life. I know for me, when I think about my alma mater, Pra irie View A&M University, my heart swells with pride. For me, the lyrics of the tune couldn’t ring any truer because my HBCU was not only the place where I received a stellar education, it was also the place that affirmed my maturation into black professional womanhood.
I am certain that I am not alone in my feelings. In fact the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) “a supportive atmosphere and community” as reasons why one would choose an HBCU. Throughout the nation, there are over 100 HBCUs, some of which were founded shortly after the American Civil War as newly freed slaves were denied admissions to white higher education institutions. The schools’ rich histories of providing not only quality educations to their students but also havens for free thinking, expression, and growth create a sense of endearment in those who attend and graduate from them. An endearment so strong at times it leads to fierce rivalries. The rivalries are normally all in fun as we all share a kinship that naturally accompanies attending a historically black college. One such rivalry is that between my alma mater, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern University. With Prairie View located only 45 miles outside of Houston, you can likely find students and alumnus squaring off to defend the title of the better school. But at the same time, you will see the rivals embrace and
commune with each other as old friends, shoot many times they are. But, despite all the love, all gloves will be off when the two meet up for its annual showdown known at the Labor Day Classic this Saturday, August 31, 2019, at BBVA Stadium. This year marks the games 35th year that the Panthers will meet the Tigers in Houston. Per usual, because of the game’s proximity to both campuses along with the number of alumnus in the area, the game will be packed. The game may be more packed this year than the last time I attended in 2015 given the growth in enrollment that the two schools have seen in recent years. In 2018, Prairie View recorded its highest total enrollment of 9,516 students, an increase of more than 1,200 students from 2015, according to an article published in the Houston Chronicle in February of this year. Texas Southern enrolled 9,732 students in 2018, down slightly from its enrollment of 10,237 in 2017, however, remarkable growth in enrollment which was just under 9,000 students in 2017. Given how each of the schools has grown, a huge turnout for Saturday’s game is highly likely.
But game attendance aside, in years when college enrollment has generally decreased across the nation it makes you wonder, what explains such growth at HBCUs? In March, Essence Magazine published an article written by Breanna Edwards entitled, “HBCU Enrollment On the Rise amid Increasing Racial Tensions.” The article noted a similar national pattern of growth in HBCU enrollment in the face of general decline, citing federal data from fall 2017 which reflected a 2.1% increase in HBCU enrollment from just the previous year. Edwards wrote that “in a climate where overt racism and racial violence has intensified, HBCUs have seen an increase in enrollment as black student seek comfort and safety.” She cited the Washington Post for the assertion that” HBCUs have seen a resurgence in their attraction as the United States continues

Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern Square Off In the 35th Labor Day Classic By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor
They love and support each other when they are not squaring off against one another and become bitter enemies when they have too. Yes. I know. It’s weird. Well, we like to say, “It’s a Texas thing and you wouldn’t understand.”

ou ever heard the phrase, “Love and Hate” relationship? It’s a phrase frequently used by siblings, best friends, college roommates, teammates, etc. Two people who have a genuine love for one another, can’t stand each other at times but doesn’t want to see each other hurt. That last sentence would describe the relationship that players, fans, and alumni from Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University have for each other.

The 35th edition of the Labor Day Classic, which is sponsored by On Site Counseling, kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 at BBVA Stadium. The classic makes a return to Labor Day Weekend for the first time since 2016. “This game means so much to so many,” said Dr. Charles McClelland, SWAC Commissioner at the Labor Day Classic Luncheon sponsored by The Touchdown Club of Houston. “To see the alumni from both schools represented here today shows what this game means. Yes, it is for bragging rights and the Durley-Nicks Trophy, but it also is for fans, family, and friends to come together and just enjoy good football.” Prairie View has won the last four meetings, but TSU head coach Clarence McKinney who was hired this past spring is hoping to change the outcome
this year. “We want to execute our game plan this Saturday,” said McKinney. “If we minimize the mistakes that have plagued this team in the past and play with discipline, we have a great chance to come out victorious.” The historically black colleges played their first game against each other in 1947 with TSU coming out on the winning end by a score of 13-7. In 1985, both schools came to an agreement that they would play the last weekend in August and would call it the “Labor Day Classic” since it was right before the holiday. Prairie View defeated Texas Southern last year by a 46-point margin to end
the season and Panthers head coach Eric Dooley is hoping that some of that offensive magic will carry over into Saturday’s game. “We had a great offseason and our kids put in a lot of work,” Dooley said. “Hopefully that will transition over to our first game and our players can show the fans all of the sacrifices that was put in over the summer.” Both schools are very rich in tradition and history that even transcends into the aforementioned Durley-Nicks trophy that is awarded to the winning team. Alexander Durley won the most games at the helm of Texas Southern, while Billy Nicks Sr. led Prairie View to five mythical black college national championships.
