COMMENTARY

Trump in Denial of Climate Change By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

ry. Trump will make it harder for them to sell themselves in the future. The United States has been taken by surprise by enemies in the past -- think Pearl Harbor or 9/11. We’ve had our share of incompetent generals and foolish leaders -- think of the North’s Civil War generals before Grant or the folly of the Iraq debacle.

L

ast month was the hottest month is recorded history. Catastrophic climate change is already costing tens of billions in damage, displacing more and more people, causing more and more casualties from California fires to the increasing force of hurricanes, the spread of desert and drought. It is real, accelerating and poses what literally is an existential threat.

Trump’s rationale is consistent. He hates all things Obama, particularly in the area of the environment, so he’s made reversing Obama’s achievements -- leaving the Paris Climate Accord, rolling back auto mileage standards, and weakening greenhouse gas controls -- a first priority. He is ideologically committed to deregulation, claiming that it will unleash growth, and blind to the damage caused to clean water, air, much less to the threat to our existence. The methane regulation, the Department of Interior announced, was “unnecessarily burdensome” to the multibillion dollar natural gas industry. The easing of methane rules, Trump’s EPA estimates, will save the oil and gas industry $17 million to $19 million a year. It will cost far more than that in contributing to the acceleration of global warming.

And the commander in chief of the most powerful nation in the world remains in denial. Trump not only denies the threat posed by manmade climate change, he consciously, purposefully and perversely works to accelerate it. This week, the administration announced that it would roll back regulations to limit methane emissions from natural gas sites on public lands. Methane is a potent gas, more destructive than carbon dioxide in trapping the earth’s heat, according to the EPA. It now represents about 10 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions -- but the administration is intent on making that worse.

POLITICAL

Ironically, the big oil and gas companies oppose the deregulation. They are trying to sell natural gas as the environmentally friendly transition fuel from coal, in an era when they understand global warming will make the transition inevitable. Methane leaks foul their sto-

The scientific consensus is that we have about 10 years to move dramatically to limit greenhouse gases and transition to renewable energy. Even now, we face accelerating natural disasters triggered or worsened by global warming. Donald Trump wants us to ignore the human and financial costs of this present threat and celebrate deregulation that will save the natural gas companies what to them is chump change. Never in our history has our national security been so threatened by the very president charged with defending it.

The Democratic majority in the House will move to block this ruling; state attorney generals have already announced that they will sue to reverse it. But

Families of Color Want to See Kamala Harris, Even If She’s Not Locked Down Their Vote By CNN Newswire

Elijah Little laid his head on his father’s shoulder, the warmth of the packed hall in West Des Moines, Iowa, wearing on him. But the 6-year-old boy’s eyes continued to dart back and forth during the political rally, between the people cheering in the crowd and the California senator speaking at the

4

But we’ve never had a commander in chief committed to making a clear and present danger to our security worse. We’ve never had one so divorced from the reality he faces. Trump argues that his deregulation is unleashing growth and prosperity. But his economy has grown no faster than that of Barack Obama, who was moving the country to meet the challenge of climate change.

Republicans in the Senate under Mitch McConnell will block congressional action. And the legions of judges that Trump has appointed are likely to limit judicial remedy. The perversity will continue until Americans in large numbers -- spurred by a younger generation that understands that their future is at risk -- rise up and demand action and sweep out those standing in the way. That is already long overdue.

microphone, Kamala Harris. Here were people who looked like his own diverse family -- still more often the rarity than the norm in this state. And there on stage was Harris herself -- a biracial woman of color running for president.

September 5 – September 11, 2019

It’s an image Elijah’s parents think will be part of his path to racial awareness. They also want for it to be a sign of hope amid the recent tumult of the allegedly racist El Paso massacre and reports of hate crimes across the country. “He’s aware that his dad is black, his mom is white,” said Elijah’s mother, Jessica. “We push really hard to make sure that’s not bad, it’s beautiful. That’s what the United States is.” Elijah’s father Eric adds: “It’s important we give him a sense that it’s OK for him to be who he is in this community. We need to have him see what the political process is about, so he gets an idea of it and he gets a feel for what it means to be a part of this country.” Presidential candidates can engage and sometimes empower those who share some part of their identity. Barack Obama’s candidacy and victory felt like it opened doors to other African Americans, while Hillary Clinton’s loss represented to many women the unwillingness of the country to break the last glass ceiling on the way to the Oval Office. The 2020 Democratic hopefuls are historically diverse, with more women and people of color than ever before. But Harris carries both gender and race on the stage as a visual promise for the next generation.

www.stylemagazine.com

Diverse parents and their children say her very presence in the 2020 race, amid a rising tide of hateful rhetoric, is meaningful. CNN has seen families of color bear witness at Harris rallies from Iowa to South Carolina to Nevada this year. That is not lost on the candidate herself, who weaves a fundamental philosophy from her mother into her stump speech. Shyamala Gopalan, an immigrant from India, peppered her daughters Kamala and Maya with many sayings, among them, “You may be the first to do many things. Make sure you’re not the last.” It’s a lesson that Harris appears to embody, repeatedly pausing and talking to children at her events. “When I see those little girls in particular, I see myself,” said Harris in an interview with CNN. “I see the children of my family. I see the children of our country. And I see the promise of our country. It means the world to me. It is about helping all children to see what’s possible. This is what’s possible. Don’t you ever accept what anyone tells you are the limitations of what you can do based on your race or gender.” She gets energy from inspired children on the long campaign trail. From its opening remarks delivered by the Master of Ceremony, KHOU TV Anchor Len Cannon, to the closing remarks delivered by one of the Foundation’s Trustees and Vice Chair, Dr. Donetta Goodall, the message was clear: donations, like those made to the university through PVAMF, directly impact the ability of the university to offer a quality of education to its stu-

Dr. Goodall’s remarks expressed her dedication to investing in our future through a donation to the university. She welcomed all in attendance to become active donors, if not, and went the step further to urge all to invite others to donate as well. She gave each guest a DVD detailing the first 125 years of the university’s history. She remarked that Prairie View has long been one of the ‘best kept secrets’ and hoped guests would use the DVDs to spread the university’s rich history. the atmosphere and the spirit of the tailgate truly make a unique tailgate experience.”

I

t’s the best time of the year for the majority of sports fans. It is the return of professional football and tailgating. Houston Texans fans have been ranked nationally as some of the best tailgaters. When fans hear the word tailgating the words food, drinks, and music come to mind. Stores are stocking up the chip and dip displays for the pregame partiers. However, don’t tell tailgaters they are just partying because there is more to it. Ronnie Thomas, a long-time season ticket holder that is a member of the Talkin’ Bout It Tailgaters (TBT) will quickly remind you they are family. He says this tailgating “unique fun, family-oriented and friendly environment. Every visitor receives love like they are family. The people involved in creating

TBT was officially started in 2006 with three guys and a small barbeque pit and grew to a dedicated crew of 25 members. The dedicated crew meets before the season so that an executive board consisting of seven can determine their logistics, finances and branding decisions. Tailgate planning begins a month before the season. The process involves forming cooking teams that consist of three to five tailgate members, logistics, and cooking assignments. Ronnie oversees the newsletter that is distributed three days before the game for members to discuss “keys to the game” with a score prediction, gameday theme reminders, and any special announcements. The communications team collects input from the cook team and the bartender that develops the drink of the week. The tailgate drink centers on the Texans’ home game opponent.

“TBT loves having guests, we encourage our tailgate member to invite guests at their leisure, but we like to inform the cook team ahead of time to have adequate food for everyone. The DJ keeps the music going, custom games that everyone can enjoy, beverages to quench a variety

of thirsts and great food to soothe any appetite.” Tailgating isn’t complete unless there are a few rituals and traditions. TBT has a few traditions such as every season during the winter TBT designates one game, “the gumbo game.” The gumbo game has gained the attention of other tailgaters and even the parking attendants. It includes a secret Louisiana recipe, including quail and a “special” smoked sausage driven in from Louisiana. Another ritual is the annual tailgate themed t-shirt with the official “Talkin’ Bout it Tailgaters” logo. The new goal for the year is to donate to a local after school programs for inner-city youth that focuses on math, science, and health initiatives.

Unanswered Questions: Texans Have A Tough Road Ahead Of Them To Repeat As AFC South Champions By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor

The running back position will be done by the committee to begin the season with Duke Johnson and Carlos Hyde splitting carries. Johnson is a great third down back who becomes another passing option for Watson out the backfield. Losing an experienced back like Lamar Miller (973 yards rushing) will hurt. Miller’s bruising running style made him tough to bring down, but it is his pass blocking ability that will be missed. One major concern for Houston will be on the defensive side of the ball. Replacing a major talent like Clowney won’t be easy. Especially when you have to face future Hall of Fame quarterbacks Drew Brees (Saints), Tom Brady (Patriots), and Phillip Rivers (Chargers), one past and one present league MVP in Matt Ryan (Falcons) and Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs), Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles (Jags), and phenom Lamar Jackson (Ravens).

T

he wait is over. The Houston Texans are finally prepared to play the New Orleans Saints in their first game of the 2019 NFL season. After going through offseason OTA’s, training camp, and we can’t forget how much of an emotional rollercoaster the fans were on last Saturday. They watched an outstanding defensive player and great locker room veteran in DE/LB Jadeveon Clowney get traded to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for two defensive players (Jacob Martin and Barkevious Mingo) and a 2020 third-round pick earlier in the day. Social media and radio airwaves were on fire when the trade happened as Texans fans were baffled on how the franchise could not come to a long-term contract agreement with Clowney. The 2019 outcome looked very bleak for the reigning 2018 AFC South Division winners. So many questions still needed to be answered on offense and now the defense was losing a former Second-Team All-Pro. It became evident that Texans were hemorrhaging fans by the minute with no first aid kit in the site. Just before things went completely dark, the general management team (Texans fired their former GM Brian Gaine in the offseason) pulled up in an ambulance and administered CPR by pulling off a mega trade with the Miami Dolphins. Houston acquired left tackle Laremy Tunsil, the 13th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, and wide receiver Kenny Stills, a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2021 sixth-round pick from Miami. In exchange, the Dolphins got two first-round picks in 2020 and 2021, a second-round pick in 2021, defensive back Johnson Bademosi, and tackle Julien Davenport.

8

The Texans also picked up running back Carlos Hyde from the Kansas City Chiefs for offensive lineman Martinas Rankin in a separate deal to help bolster the backfield after starting running back Lamar Miller went down and was lost for the year in the preseason against the Dallas Cowboys. Wait. Did I mention that the Texans coaching staff were also in the process of making final cuts to get the roster down to 53? Yes. It was that type of day in the city of Houston.

season with 4,165 yards passing, 26 touchdowns and only nine interceptions, has always been priority number one within the organization. The acquisition of Tunsil will give him enough time to get the ball to a wide receiver group that includes 2018 First-Team All-Pro, DeAndre Hopkins (1,152 yards receiving, 11 touchdowns, 0 passes dropped)

Luckily, the Texans have a player who can shut down one entire side of the field. J.J. Watt, who made All Pro at two positions last season (Edge rusher, Interior lineman) had 16 sacks last season will have some added pressure this season as offensive coordinators will send more players to slow him down without Clowney being in the lineup.

Now that the roster has been set and the practice squad has been filled, the Texans face another difficult task in playing four teams (Saints, Chargers, Chiefs, Colts) that made the 2018 NFL playoffs in their first seven games including two who made their respective conference championship games (Saints and Chiefs). Both teams came within one play of facing each other in the Super Bowl. The backend of the schedule doesn’t get any easier for Houston as they face the Ravens and Colts and finish off a three-week span of games against the Super Bowl LIII champions, New England Patriots. With the sudden retirement announcement of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, the AFC South is up for grabs and I believe the offensive moves the team made on Saturday will propel them to another division title. Tim Kelly will take over play calling duties this year and Houston brought in “Quarterback Whisper” Carl Smith from Seattle to help bring some wisdom and knowledge to the quarterback’s room. Protecting franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson, who finished last

September 5 – September 11, 2019

and two guys who can stretch the field in Will Fuller and Kenny Stills. Second year tight end Jordan Akins looks like he is ready to take over as the starter after having a great training camp. “We have a lot of reasons to be excited about where we are right now,” head coach Bill O’Brien said at his press conference on Monday at NRG. “I would say that on the roster and the moves that were made, I feel really good about being able to get a proven left tackle to protect Deshaun Watson. They’re hard to draft, they’re hard to develop, but Laremy Tunsil is an excellent player who was here last night, yesterday afternoon, in here right now meeting with Mike (Devlin).”

www.stylemagazine.com

The defensive backfield for Houston is as good as they come in the AFC. Safety Justin Reid is coming off a great rookie campaign (70 solo tackles, 10 pass deflections, and 3 interceptions) and will team up with newly acquired Tashaun Gipson who was with the division rival Jacksonville last season. My prediction is that the Texans will end the regular season with a record of 10-6. That will be good enough to win the division and get them to the playoffs. I feel for this season to be a success that coach O’Brien has to at least get the team to the AFC Championship game or they will be right back in the offseason answering questions about what went wrong.

Prairie View A&M Defeats Texas Southern 44 - 23 In 35 th Annual Labor Day Classic Behind Tucker’s Three Touchdowns By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor

201-89. Prairie View led the SWAC in scoring (33.5PPG), passing (256 passing YPG) and finished second in rushing offense (202.2 rushing YPG) and total offense (459 YPG) last season.

H

OUSTON- Prairie View A&M put the rest of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) on notice that they will be a force to be reckon with this season. They picked up right where they left off last year by displaying their very aggressive and high-octane offense in the 35th Annual Labor Day Classic. The Panthers (1-0, 1-0 SWAC) defeated their in-state rivals Texas Southern University (0-1, 0-1 SWAC) by a score of 44-23 at BBVA Compass Stadium in front of the 15,000 fans in attendance. Prairie View has won the last five meetings by outscoring Texas Southern

“We want to be known as a big play team,” said PVAMU head coach Eric Dooley when asked about how his teams high scoring offense has carried over from last season. “I want to take my hat off to Texas Southern as they did some things that stopped us for a couple of series. But, you know, my hat’s off to my team as well.” Florida Atlantic transfer, quarterback DeAndre Johnson, helped the Tigers build a 13-6 lead after the first quarter. The “Last Chance U” (Netflix) star hit preseason All-SWAC wide receiver Tren’Davian Dickson for a 12-yard touchdown pass. That lead would be temporary as the Panthers got things going in the second quarter when their dynamic running back, Dawonya Tucker ran for a 17-yard touchdown to tie the score at 13. He would then bring the Prairie View fans

to their feet with a 66-yard explosive run to the endzone to put the Panthers up for good. “Word in the conference was I didn’t do enough,” said Tucker who finished the game with 188-yards on 11 rushes and three touchdowns. “I set some personal goals and outside of the win as a team, I marked this game. I wanted to go out with a bang.” Kicker Zach Elder kicked a 23-yard field goal to put the Panthers increase the lead to 23-13 going into the half. Coach Dooley must have pulled his quarterback Jalen Morton to the side during halftime and told him that they were going to air it out in the second half. Morton connected with junior wide receiver Kalen Riles for a 10-yard score to open the half. He would later throw a beautiful spiral downfield to receiver Tony Mullins (6 catches for 141yards) for a 48-yard score to put the game out of reach for the Tigers. ‘We felt confident enough that all we had to do was go make plays,” said Morton whose 350-yards passing, and two passing touchdowns contributed

to the 615 total yards of offense for the Panthers. TSU, who amassed 423 total yards, did not go down without a fight. Johnson, who finished the game with 259 yards passing and two touchdowns, threw a touchdown strike to senior tight end Chris Long for 40 yards late in the third quarter to pull within two scores. But Panthers running back Tucker opened the fourth quarter with a 58-yard run to seal the game. “Our guys went out and played hard,” said TSU head coach Clarence McKinney who was making his debut as the 17th head coach in school history. “We made some mistakes that we are not accustomed too, but it was our first game. The biggest thing is that they went out and played from the opening kickoff and played to the final whistle.” Prairie View will be back in action next Saturday against the University of Houston, while Texas Southern will travel to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word. Prepare Your Family for Hurricane Season By Family Features

S

evere weather events, like hurricanes, are powerful and can come on quickly, often leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Because power outages are also common with strong storms and natural disasters, preparing your family ahead of time can help ensure safety.

Making a portable generator part of your plan ensures access to safe food storage and preparation, hot water, lights and important radio or television updates in the aftermath of a storm when it can be difficult to predict when full power will be restored.

While portable generators can be valuable tools in helping protect your family during and after a hurricane, they must be used properly to avoid potentially deadly carbon monoxide buildup, which is emitted as toxic engine exhaust and cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Although it is impossible to completely eliminate the hazards associated with improper generator use, models that comply with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association

(PGMA) G300 Standard provide enhanced safety through carbon monoxide sensors and shutdown features that can help protect your family. Also consider these tips for safe operation from

generator operation and potential hazards. To avoid dangerous carbon monoxide accumulation, always “Take It Outside,” which means never running a portable generator indoors, such as in garages, basements, crawl spaces, breezeways, sheds or other partially enclosed spaces. Always place a portable generator downwind and point the engine exhaust away from occupied spaces. Also avoid placing your generator near windows, doors or vents, as carbon monoxide gas can accumulate and potentially be drawn indoors. If you feel sick, dizzy or weak while using your portable generator, get to fresh air immediately and call 911 for emergency medical attention as you may be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. 7 Natural Ways to Care for Your Adrenal Glands BlackDoctor.org

A

drenal glands are thumbsized glands that sit on top of your kidney and produce over fifty hormones that drive almost every bodily function. These functions are essential to life. The function of the adrenal glands is to release specific hormones into the bloodstream, which then helps regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, as well as respond to stress. The adrenal glands are made up of two parts; the cortex and medulla; both produce different hormones. The medulla produces stress hormones; including adrenaline, which can cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. The cortex is the largest part of the adrenal glands and is divided into three zones. Each of the three zones is responsible for producing specific hormones; cortisol, aldosterone, and DHEA. The cortisol hormone controls the body’s use of carbs, fats, and proteins. The cortisol hormone also suppresses inflammation. Aldosterone assists in regulating the blood’s pH, and DHEA converts into male and female hormones. Factors That May Influence Adrenal Fatigue? 1. Diet A diet full of processed foods, refined sugar, and ingredients that cause inflammation can put stress on the body, therefore worsening or causing adrenal fatigue. 2. Stress When taking on life’s everyday stress your adrenal glands have to work overtime. 3. Lack of Sleep Not getting enough sleep and depending on caffeine and even wine can be a factor in sleep deprivation which causes the adrenals to use up the stress hormones to keep you awake. Symptoms That May Occur When Your Adrenal Glands Are Overworked Include:

• • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Chronic inflammation Sudden weight gain Digestive problems Depression Brain fog Fatigue Anxiety Salt cravings Inability to manage stress Exhaustion Insomnia Puffiness under the eyes Dark circles under the eyes Low functioning thyroid

Natural Ways To Care For And Heal Your Adrenals While you may take medication prescribed by your doctor or storebought supplements, there are other natural ways to care for and potentially heal your adrenal fatigue. These small changes can make a huge difference. Try a nutrientrich diet high in whole plantbased foods. This means lots of fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds, legumes and beans. Avoid refined sugar and processed foods as much as possible. 2. Exercise Focus on more lowimpact and less highimpact exercises and cardio. High impact exercises cause physical stress on the body. Try yoga, or take a walk. 3. Salt Bath By bathing in Epsom salt you are replenishing the magnesium your body has burned from stress. 4. Adaptogenic Herbs Healing plants like ashwagandha, licorice root, and Rhodiola have been known to calm the body. 5. Hydration Keeping the body hydrated is key to transporting nutrients and hormones to the cells.

6. Sleep and Rest By getting between 79 hours of sleep and resting the body, you are minimizing the emotional and physical stress you are putting on the body, which allows your adrenals to not work so hard. 7. Eliminate Caffeine

Avoid coffee, caffeine, and other stimulants that may overwork the adrenals. These products keep your body in a constant state of alert, causing the adrenals to burnout.

EAT WITH STYLE NRG: ‘The Culinary Capital of the South’ By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

H

ouston Texans President Jamey Rootes is issuing an invitation to all football fans to a “Taste of Houston, the Culinary Capital of the South.” Rootes put out the call during the unveiling of all that was new NRG stadium this year. Suite renovations, new concession items, designer clothing collection for women, touchdown deals, and an app makeover, Texans’ fans will have an experience that is sweeter to lounge in, tastier to the palette, and easier to navigate during the 2019 season. New Concession Items My favorite part is always to see what is new on the menu and oh they’re some good ones. Of all the new offerings, the most desired were bacon wrapped

12

chicken skewers from BB’s Tex Orleans Café. Awe the bacon was cooked perfectly giving a little crunch to the perfectly tenderized chicken. BB’s is also dishing out some Cajun empanadas and shrimp po’boys. A close second was Gringo’s Tex Mex sampler that comes with chicken quesadillas, beef empanadas, chicken taquitos, southwest chicken eggrolls with Chile con queso and Amazon sauce. Taco lovers will get excited over Gringo’s street tacos with beef rib eye tips. All the meats taste like they are straight off the grill. Coming in third was Dish Society’s shrimp and grits. These made me happy as they were not overly cheesy or oversaturated with peppers and onions. I was not a big fan of the cheese curds from Curds and Cakes. It is not that the original and blue moon jalapeno beer battered cheese curds weren’t flavorsome, it just wasn’t for me.

touchdown deals with the classic options are just $5. Get a popcorn, nacho, or hot dog combo for $5 each; $2 water; $2.50 12oz domestic beer; or a $5 domestic draft beer.

Although I don’t know the price points of the above I know NRG is not pricing fans out of food options even if they might be a little on the high end. Touchdown deals are filling for a great value. Located throughout the stadium,

As if these suites could not get any better, the Texans have raised the prestige of them to combine with the honor of the Texas Legends giving them a distinctive look noting the status.

September 5 – September 11, 2019

Suite Changes Luxury suites have always been the best places to watch any Texans’ game for the oversized couches, high viewing point, and attendants catering to your needs. For 2019, the suites get a makeover for a modern look that has slowly taken shape over the past three years. Floors have been replaced to a wood grain style. With the new flooring also came new furniture, lighting, and backsplashes. Induction warmers and commercial grade refrigerators are ready to heat things up and cool them down. Ring of Honor Suites

Fashion Forward Fans Fan gear for women has not always been the most flattering. Tailoring a football jersey to fit a woman’s frame is great but something with a more feminine flair will be great. Ladies, the Texans heard and have responded this season with a new collection just for women featuring Houston-based fashion illustrator Rongrong DeVoe’s custom drawings. The drawings are of four ladies all ready for the game wearing head-to-toe Texans gear depicting the different type of fan personalities. There is the laid-back fan with a nod to the classic old school flavor that looks a bit ‘baseballish’ to me with Texas flag cowboy boots. Next to her is the lady that says ‘game on’ with her ripped jeans and oversized Texans necklace. Alongside her is the down home girl in her Texans cowboy hat, white boots, and Samos Texans shirt. Last is the Texans diva in an all-white ensemble with the Texans logo boldly on her chest. “Read the full story online at stylemagazine.com.”

BOOK

“Scam Me If You Can” by Frank W. Abagnale

By Terri Schlichenmeyer, Book Reviewer

avoid becoming a victim of technology thieves.

Y

our friend “Rachel” called today.

Seven times, she did, and you answered two of them before you realized that you were being robocalled again. You’re usually pretty savvy about not being fooled but lately, it seems like the more you know, the better scammers get at deception. So read the new book, “Scam Me If You Can” by Frank W. Abagnale, and protect yourself. You’ve heard the horror stories: people scammed out of their life savings, businesses targeted by ransomware, computers hijacked with malware, and you wonder if you’re doing enough to

The answer to that is “no.” Says Abagnale, who was a scammer himself for part of his young life, boiler-room thieves are constantly looking for ways to get around technology blocks, firewalls, and the like. They know exactly how to find your personal information online (it’s very easy), and they buy what’s not a few clicks away. Chances are, you’re already an open book on some database. So what can you do? First of all, recognize that safety is fleeting: scammers know how to suss out information better than you know how to hide it. Also remember that if you’re scammed, you’re not alone: in 2017, more than 16 million Americans were victims of fraud. Never let your guard down when talking to strangers. In public, watch your belongings at all times. Don’t fall “under the ether” by becoming complacent and if you feel pressured, walk away or hang up. Question fees, especially anything you’re asked to

pay up-front. Never, ever give personal information to someone who calls you with a “deal.” Those things may be commonsensical. Abagnale goes on… Lighten your wallet by carrying only what you need today. Invest in the right kind of shredder and shred everything. Know how to hire a trustworthy banker, accountant, IT person, and other service workers. Learn what you can do to protect your small business from hacking and ransomware. And as for passwords, well, Abagnale awaits the day we can truly forget them, since better security methods are available… Until that day arrives, look for “Scam Me If You Can” but don’t answer an un-

recognized phone call or press “2” to be taken off a list. Doing either is a mistake, as you’ll learn inside this informative, important book. Yes, it’s time to stop hiding beneath your desk from scams. Not to scare you – though the information does read like a high-tech horror novel – but author Frank Abagnale wants his readers to know how thieves think and work and how to build a virtual wall around personal and business data. He writes truthfully, in plain talk, and if you’re not thrown into action by his useful advice, the cautionary tales he tells will do it. “Scam Me If You Can” is the kind of book of which to buy multiple copies: one for you, one for your parents, the office, and for anybody who holds your information. Read it, share it, protect
