COMMENTARY

Can America Break Its Gun Addiction? By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

Walmart’s action moved other retailers to act, as Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery chain, CVS, Walgreens and Wegmans also announced bans on open carry. (Other chains like Target, Starbucks and Chipotle have had policies against open carry for years). The laws on open carry and concealed carry of handguns vary from state to state, but open carry is legal in most states, often without any requirement for a permit. Walmart’s example should now lead to a broader nonviolent movement to limit the carrying of guns, even as citizens push for legislative reforms at the state and national level.

C

an America break its gun addiction? After mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, Southaven, Mississippi, Dayton, Ohio and Midland and Odessa, Texas, public demand for sensible gun reform once more soared. And once more, Republican politicians, led by Donald Trump, were intimidated into inaction by the gun lobby, led by the National Rifle Association. Remarkably, it was America’s largest retailer -- Walmart -- that exhibited the courage politicians lacked.

to take action to protect workers and customers in their stores. Walmart announced that it would ban open carry of guns in its stores. In addition, it would discontinue selling handgun ammunition and ammunition that can be used in large-capacity clips on assault-style weapons. This was no small step. The NRA and other gun lobbies immediately called on members to boycott Walmart. Walmart itself projected that it would lose about half of its ammunition sales with this decision.

It was in a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, where a gunman armed with an assault-style rifle, roused by the hatefilled rhetoric about a Latino “invasion” of our country, shot 48 people, killing 22. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, a lifelong hunter, realized that they had

Walmart also called on the federal government to act, to “strengthen background checks” and to consider “reauthorization of the Assault Weapons ban.”

On university campuses, states laws vary dramatically, but most allow institutions to limit open or concealed carry. Students across the country should ensure that their university has acted to limit guns to the extent the laws allow. At athletic events, again laws vary. Generally, it is illegal to carry guns into professional athletic events from the NFL to Major League Baseball. Most states also ban guns from high school or interscholastic sporting events. But as a college level, laws vary.

Joe Biden’s Foot-In-Mouth Syndrome Strikes Again After He Implies Black Parents Don’t Know How To Raise Their Kids

ormer Vice President Joe Biden tasted his toes again after he flubbed an answer to a debate question about slavery. During last Thursday’s debate, moderator Linsey Davis asked Biden about a comment he made 40 years ago about the legacy of slavery, according to The Intercept. In the 1970s, he said, “I don’t feel responsible for the sins of my father and grandfather. I feel responsible for what the situation is today, for the sins of my own generation, and I’ll be damned if I feel responsible to pay for what happened 300 years ago.”

4

In many states, like Texas, open carry is legal in churches. Churches across the country should follow Walmart’s lead and post signs banning the carrying of guns -- open or concealed -- on church property.

Davis asked Biden how the nation should address its sins. “You said that some 40 years ago, but as you stand here tonight, what responsibility do you think that Americans need to take to repair the legacy of slavery in our country?” she questioned. Biden’s answer wasn’t much better than the comment he made in the 70s. He rambled about his record on fighting segregation and suggested preschool-aged children should be in school instead of daycare. The end of his answer was the eyebrow-raiser. “We bring social workers into homes of parents to help them deal with how to raise their children. It’s not that they don’t want to help, they don’t want — they don’t know quite what to do,” Biden stated. “Play the radio, make sure the television — excuse me, make sure you have the record player on at night, the phone — make sure that kids hear words,” he added. “A kid coming from a very poor school — a very poor background — will hear 4 million words fewer spoken by the time they get there.” Biden’s ignorant answer drew swift criticism. CNN commentator Angela Rye said the 76-year-old “has not yet dealt with whether or not he has a Black agenda.”

September 19 – September 25, 2019

In many states, concealed carry is legal unless the university posts signs banning guns. Surely every campus should act to keep guns out of the stands at athletic events. If more retailers follow Walmart, and if churches, and universities and concert halls and movie theaters act to ban weapons from their premises, a movement for common sense gun regulation can continue to build. When Dr. Martin Luther King called America the “most violent nation on earth,” he was widely condemned, but he was right. No other nation suffers the level of gun violence that we endure. No other nation fights in as many wars on as many continents as we do. Other nations savaged by civil war or outside invasion may suffer greater casualties in a conflict, but we have made violence -- and victims of violence -- routine. Dr. King argued that we have a choice in the end between nonviolence and nonexistence. The only hope for sensible gun regulation is to challenge the corruption represented by the NRA by nonviolent demonstrations and action, enlisting the overwhelming majority of Americans in a movement for change. “When we talk about racism in this country, it is not about parents not knowing how to raise their children,” she told anchor Jake Tapper. “And then for him to say that, on the stage at Texas Southern University, which is a historically Black college which — shameless plug, I did the commencement speech this spring — I am just — I just don’t know if he’s not listening to his Black advisers because he has them.” Rye urged Biden to get with the times and stop relying on his resume to get by. “And I want him to really come to terms with the fact that things are different from when he started in politics — he’s been in politics a long time — even different from when he served as vice president for both terms for Barack Obama, it is a different day and age and it is required — it is incumbent upon him to have a black agenda and the reason why 52% of the respondents to the black census by the Black Futures Lab say they don’t think politicians care about black people,” she added. Social media also had a lot to say about Biden. Biden’s foot-in-mouth syndrome has reared its ugly head a few times since he began his campaign. In August, he caught flak for claiming “poor kids are just as bright and just as

www.stylemagazine.com

talented as white kids.” A couple of months before, he bragged about his friendly relationship with segregationist politicians. “I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland. He never called me ‘boy,’ he always called me ‘son,’” Biden said. “Well guess what? At least there was some civility. We got things done,” Biden said. “We didn’t agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished.” Then there’s Corn Pop, the gangster he allegedly confronted back in the day, according to Insider. Joe, just stop talking.

ometimes it’s best not to mess with the cinematic classics, which is why we’re giving Issa Rae the side-eye for taking on a remake of “Set It Off” as her next project. And we’re not alone… while some fans across social media are thrilled by the news, others are noting feeling her reported “re-imagining” of the 1996 crime drama, which Variety reports Issa will produce and possibly star in the film. Directed by F. Gary Gray, “Set It Off” centers on four female friends who turn to robbing banks to offset their low-income jobs. The film stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise—and became a critical and box office success.

Century Mark – Astros defeat the Rangers 3-2 to reach 100-wins for third straight year By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor

For the third straight year, the Houston Astros have eclipsed the 100-win mark making them the sixth team in MLB history to complete such a feat with the last being the 2002-04 New York Yankees.

I

t is not often a baseball fan gets to witness the team they cheer for get 100 wins in a season. On tonight, 38,417 fans did. The Astros (100-53) defeated the Texas Rangers (74-79) 3-2 behind a strong pitching performance from the Major League leader in strikeouts, Gerrit Cole (18-5). He also became the fastest pitcher in Astros history to reach 300 strikeouts in a season. The last pitchers to reach such an accomplishment were Mike Scott in 1986 (306) and J.R. Richards, who did it twice in 1978 (307) and 1979 (313). “He is incredible,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said after the game about Cole. “I think he is a special player and person. It was a big night for him and a big accomplishment for him. Our entire team was excited for him.”

With nine games left in the 2019 Major League Baseball season, the Houston Astros look prime and ready to head into the playoffs as one of the perennial favorites to win it all. Houston currently sits atop of the American League West with a 100-53, which is a franchise record after 153 games and have an 8-game lead over the second place Oakland A’s. Houston lost at least 100 games in three straight seasons from 2011-13, so it feels good for the team to be on the opposite end of that. “Winning 100 games for three straight years is a lot,” said Hinch. “I love it for this team and this organization. I want to take a minute to congratulate our team.” The Astros are also in a battle for the best record in the AL with the New York Yankees and the overall best record in Major League Baseball with the Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. That

makes every game important down the stretch, as the home field is crucial when it comes to playoff baseball. Houston finally got to Texas pitcher Kolby Allard (4-1) in the bottom of the fifth inning. After leaving eight men on base through four innings, DH Yordan Alvarez singled to left and 1B Yuli Gurriel hit his 30th homerun on a 1-0 pitch from Allard. With that homer, Gurriel became the fifth Cuban born player to reach 40 doubles, 30 HR and 100 RBI in a season. Texas would bounce back in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to one after a throwing error by Astros catcher Martin Maldonado allowed Willie Calhoun to score. Houston would gain the run right back in the bottom of the in-

ning when second baseman Jose Altuve hit his 29th homerun of the season to push the lead back to 3-2.“I don’t want to say I was frustrated because I knew we were in the process of getting better,” said Astros second baseman Jose Altuve on being on the 2013 team. “I thank God for being a part of this team and winning all these games.” Cole, who also won his 14th game in a row, would surrender a homerun to Rangers first baseman Ronald Guzman to bring the lead back down to one before he got out of the inning with a strikeout (Andrus) and a line drive by Calhoun to OF Kyle Tucker. Cole has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in seven straight starts, which ties a franchise record set earlier this season by his teammate Justin Verlander.

Shirer said no when first approached about acting. She has too much respect for the craft and those who are do it professionally. No way was she doing that. But the Kendrick Brothers weren’t guys who took no for an answer. With lots of prodding and patience Shirer came around and said yes. And she found out that she did enjoy the process.

“Olivia is a professional and polished administrator who cares very deeply about doing her job well and encouraging those around her to do the same. Yet, she always seems to make time and find opportunities to be personal and relational with her students and colleagues.” Shirer continued, “I loved the image of an older woman, like Olivia, making time for a younger woman – Hannah. The beautiful ripple effect that can happen in a young woman’s life when someone takes the time to really see her – to read between the lines and dive into the worries, concerns, and interests of her soul – is breathtaking. California man has become the seventh person to die from a vaping-related illness in the United States as the nation’s leading health agency activates emergency operations to better investigate the outbreak of lung injuries associated with e-cigarettes. California will launch a $20 million ad campaign to warn against the dangers of vaping, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday, the same day health officials said a 40-year-old had died over the weekend from complications related to using e-cigarettes. Vaping-related illness recently killed another person in California, plus one person each in Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Oregon, officials have reported. In light of the outbreak of lung injuries, the US Centers for Disease Control has activated its Emergency Operations Center, the agency announced. Researchers are looking into 380 cases of lung illness associated with the use of e-cigarettes in 36 states and the US Virgin Islands, they have said. California weighs steeper vaping pod taxes California, meantime, will focus on spreading the word about vaping risks while also boosting enforcement efforts on counterfeit products and weighing stricter package warning rules, Newsom said during a news conference. The state also will investigate tax policy regarding vaping pods. A pack of cigarettes carries a tax of $2.87, while a Juul pod, for example, gets only a $1.48 tax, the governor said. The intent of the investigation is to “substantially increase taxes to these products,” said Newsom, who included the measures in an executive order he said is needed because of a lack of legislative efforts. As for flavored e-cigarettes, “they should be banned,” Newsom said, adding he could not add that parameter to his order, though he didn’t explain why. “Let’s just dispense with any niceties,” he said. “You don’t have any bubblegum-flavored, mango-flavored tobacco products unless you’re trying to target an audience that you were losing

The latest California victim had been sick for several weeks after he suffered a “severe pulmonary injury associated with vaping,” Dr. Karen Haught, the Tulare County public health officer, said in a news release. “The Tulare County Public Health Branch would like to warn all residents that any use of ecigarettes poses a possible risk to the health of the lungs and can potentially cause severe lung injury that may even lead to death,” Haught said. “Long-term effects of vaping on health are unknown. Anyone considering vaping should be aware of the serious potential risk associated with vaping,” she said. County of Los Angeles Public Health staff earlier this month announced the death of a resident potentially related to the use of e-cigarettes. ‘It is time to stop vaping’ The first death identified as related to vaping was announced in August, when theIllinois Department of Public Health released a statement saying the person had been hospitalized with “severe respiratory illness” after recently vaping. Cases of vaping-related illness had been identified in 11 counties, the agency said. A person in Oregon who had recently vaped products containing cannabis purchased at a dispensary died in July, according to a statement released in early September by the Oregon Health Authority. The symptoms the patient suffered were similar to at least 200 cases in a national cluster that was mostly affecting teenagers and young adults, Oregon officials said.

“We don’t yet know the exact cause of these illnesses -- whether they’re caused by contaminants, ingredients in the liquid or something else, such as the device itself,” said Dr. Ann Thomas, public health physician at OHA’s Public Health Division.

Another death related to vaping was identified on September 6 by health officials in Indiana. The patient was older than 18 and died of a severe lung injury linked to a history of e-cigarette use.

Oh, and if you just happen to bring along your beloved pooch, there are even bike attachments available to tote your doggie. Yes, Tamaya is a pet friendly resort – HOORAY! Or should I say “woof, woof”?

patio or sipping on a cocktail during the evening, the view is definitely one to be admired. And for my Instagrammers, this set up makes for the perfect photo opportunity to showcase your vacation

My weekend stay at Tamaya was perfect for a much-needed escape filled with relaxation, cultural experiences and a hint of adventure. So come along this escapade with me and find out why Tamaya Resort and Spa should be your next destination getaway!

After freshening up for the evening, sunset cocktails and shareable plates at the Rio Grande Lounge, offering both indoor and outdoor seating, was just what I needed. If you’re into everything spicy like me, then I recommend the Green Chile Margarita paired with the Crispy Green Chile Strips. For all the vegetarians, there are several menu options that are guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds.

Upon my arrival to Albuquerque, everything was different from the busy hustle and bustle of Houston city life. There was less traffic (ok, a lot less traffic), slower welcoming pace, beautiful views of the scenic mountains and best of all - no humidity. (My hair rejoiced!) I opted not to rent a car since my mission was to simply “resort and relax”. Instead, I had a private company drive me to my destination. As we departed for a short 15 to 20 minute drive from the airport, we came upon a winding road that would eventually lead us to Hotel Tamaya. I kept looking out of the window wondering exactly the resort was. All I could see was beautiful mountain terrain. The road seem to go on forever as I was anxious to visually see and experience the “Oasis in the Dessert” as my driver described it. Upon my arrival, the staff greeted me, promptly checked me in, and sent me off to my room with a complimentary

Time to strap on those boots and giddy-up! Tamaya Resort and Spa offers horseback riding. So of course, this city slicker took on the opportunity to ride off into the sunset to bring the cows home. Ok, I really didn’t round up the herd but hey, a girl can still pretend, right? Since this was my first time ever on a horse (please don’t judge this Texas girl), I must admit that I more than a bit nervous but the good people from the Stables at Tamaya made sure I got the right horse just for me. Our group horse ride took us through a peaceful, scenic ride through the Pueblo backcountry. About 30 minutes into our journey, it was just like a movie; the thunder began rumbling in the distance and the clouds began to darken and encompass us from each and every angle. Then all of a sudden, lightning. Our horses started to get a little rattled but our trail guides rode directly by our sides directing us and making sure our horses were ok. The guide leader in charge made the call to head back before the rain drenched us. And the right call he made. My only regret is not having a camera crew with me. This would have been the perfect opportunity to make a mini movie “City Slickers Part 3” – starring me of course!

space!). But that’s not the best part. Not only was my bathroom stocked with the regular hotel amenities – you know, the small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, but also there was an entire basket filled with name brand toiletries. From toothbrushes and toothpaste, to dental floss, deodorant, hairspray, razors and shaving cream, all the toiletries necessary provided by the resort just in case you’re like me and always forget to pack something here and there. Quick note: When booking your room, make sure to ask for a view of the Sandia Crest. The mountain’s different hues throughout the day are a delight. Whether enjoying room service on the

retreat. For the vacationist wanting to get away from it all, Tamaya is the perfect stay. From your large comfy room with a view to the the Kiva Adult pool, where quiet is key, Tamaya provides plenty of resort opportunities to escape from it all However, if you want some poolside enjoyment with fun activities, then the large Plaza Pool area featuring a multi-story waterslide is just for you. This is where you will find the poolside bar (yay!) along with recreational activities such as volleyball, ping-pong, biggie sized lawn chess, horse shoes or perhaps an evening bike ride along the

Note: On certain nights, this vibrant gathering spot offers live music entertainment. The stars shine brightly during the Tamaya nights. This makes for a perfect backdrop for an evening stroll or perhaps sitting by the campfire where you’ll more than likely stumble across s’mores by the pit or even Native American Story Telling Under the Stars. Personally, I just sat there by the fire staring at the stars in the sky letting all my woes escape me. Doing the things I don’t get to do in the city are what makes travel so amazing for me, especially one where I get to connect with nature and just unwind. The following morning, I headed

off for a leisurely walk on one of the nature trails on the property and from there I went to my lesson in adobe brick

After an oh so hard day of brick making, what’s better than pampering yourself at Tanaya Mist Spa & Salon, the resort’s award winning spa? Offering a variety of treatments to help you unwind and rejuvenate, the spa is split into male and female-only, clothing optional sections for your pre and post treatment relaxation. I wish I could elaborate more on the amenities offered at the spa but I immediately went into a sleep coma in the comfy lounge area after my “Royal Renewal Treatment”. I think one of the staff members had to wake me up – sorry if I was snoring (lol). That’s how good my treatment was.

making. Too bad I didn’t have my very own Patrick Swayze to have my Ghost pottery making moment! But seriously, it felt good to get my hands dirty while learning about the native culture. Once your brick is completed, and after a full day of drying in the sun, the staff will

have it available for you at the front desk. If you want to fly back home with it – take it in your carry on and tell TSA that it’s pottery (insert smiley face). If brick making isn’t your thing, the resort offers an array of Srai Wi (our children)

Cultural Activities, which are led by a tribal member.

Make sure to enjoy dinner at least one time at the Corn Maiden, the resort’s fine- dining establishment. Reservations are recommended, as diners celebrating special occasions often frequent the Corn Maiden. Whether dining in or on the expansive patio, the views of the Sandia Mountains while enjoying a glass of wine will not disappoint. The Loin, Buffalo Sausage, Fresno Chicken Breast served with Hatch Green Chile Au-Gratin Potatoes, Market Vegetables, Mole, and Cholla Pico.

Southwestern décor, along with the corner fireplaces and subdued lighting make for a perfect backdrop to enjoy good conversation and the tastiest of foods inspired by regional flavors. Do yourself a favor and order one of

the restaurant’s signature rotisseries such as the beautifully plated Classic “K’uchininak’u”: Native Beef Strip

Not that you will want to leave the resort once you’re there, but if you’re wanting to learn more about Native American culture, then plan on visiting during the month of July. But wait, because later I will tell you why you should definitely also visit in October! Annually, on July 26th, the Tamayame people gather to celebrate their patron saint, Saint Anne. Feast Day, as it is called, includes traditional dances, cultural activities, food, and arts and crafts. However, I was lucky enough to observe so much more as I witnessed the community in their traditional wear, dancing, giving thanks for providing sustenance, spreading feast day offerings – a line of what seemed like never-ending food offerings to share. And if witnessing this all of this wasn’t euphoric enough, a lucky encounter with Travis, a native willing to share some insight about the day’s festivities, invited me into his home to sit at his family’s dinner table and share a traditional meal with other friends and family members. This was truly an unforgettable, once in a lifetime occurrence that is indicative of a true New Mexico experience. Another one-of-a-kind experience, and a first for me, was the hot air balloon ride! Thanks to Rainbow Ryders Inc., who picked me up from the resort, I was able to cross another “to do” off my bucket list. It was an early start (5am. yikes!) but well worth it. From watching the staff unload the balloon equipment to hopping into the basket and slowly lifting off to watch the sunrise, this girl was so giddy – I literally had butterflies in my tummy. To my

surprise, the experience was quiet and peaceful; literally floating on air away staring off into the majestic colors of light reflecting off the Sandia Crest Mountains. Flight time lasts about an hour, give or take a few minutes. And while exploring the beautiful city of Albuquerque from above was exhilarating, the landing was even more fun! My knowledgeable and skillful pilot guided our balloon to a safe landing spot in the city, and once we touched ground and safely departed the balloon, I, along with my riding mates were treated to the historical background of how hot air balloons came about while sipping on some fresh mimosas provided by the Rainbow Ryders crew! Sorry, I can not divulge on the history of hot air ballooning because I want you to book your trip to the Tamaya Resort & Spa so you could indulge in all of the luxuries and adventure. After all, this is a once in a lifetime experience. Oh yeah, and why should you visit in October? Every year, the city of Albuquerque is home to the largest hot air ballooning event in the world. The 9-day festival, filled with vibrant balloon-filled skies is being held from October 5th – 13th this year. The event also includes tons of entertainment activities such as live music, chainsaw carving, rodeos, fireworks, balloon glows, and so much more. And in case I failed to mention, there is a railway that will take you from the resort to the city of Albuquerque so that you can enjoy all of the festivities. =v So, what are you waiting for? Look up Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa and click on the “book now” tab – yes, right now! After all, I know and you know that a getaway to the luxurious Tamaya Resort and Spa is well deserved.
