COMMENTARY
Which Side Are You On? By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
M
ore than 2,200 nurses at the University of Chicago Medical Center went out on strike last week, but they are not alone. American workers are waking up and walking out. On September 15, 46,000 hourly General Motors UAW employees went on strike, the first time in 12 years. Striking British Airway pilots grounded 1,700 planes. In Republican states like Oklahoma and West Virginia, teachers shut down schools to demand that state legislatures reverse the deep cuts exacted from public education. Marriot hotels were hit with the largest hotel strike in U.S. history, a walkout of 6,000 hotel workers in four states. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that a soaring number of workers vwent on strike or
stopped work i n 2018 — 485,000 — the most since 1986. The rising number of strikes reflect the reality of Trump’s economy: despite all his boasting about the “economic miracle,” most workers aren’t experiencing it. Corporate profits have soared, but workers haven’t shar ed the benefit. Trump’s tax scam went largely to the rich and the corporations. Corporate promises of wage and investment hikes were largely discarded, with CEOs using the tax breaks mostly to buy back stocks, boosting their stock bonuses and shafting their workers. Gilded age inequality is combined

with rising insecurity for working people. Even now wages have finally begun to rise, but still are not catching up to soaring costs in basics like health care and education. Just twenty - two percent of workers h ave a pension plan of any kind at work. Forty percent of Americans say they would be forced to borrow or sell something to cover a $400 emergency. One in five say they know someone addicted to opioids or painkillers. The GM strike comes after workers sacri ficed big time to help GM out of bankruptcy during the Great Recession. Now GM’s profits are up, CEO bonuses are up, but workers who shared the pain haven’t shared in the gain. They are striking for decency, for higher wages, for strong health care plans, for turning more temporary workers — who get no benefits — into permanent workers with pensions and health care and vacations. The strike wave last year was led by teachers in deep red states. In each state, Republican legislatures had slashed spending on education during the Great Recession and cut taxes on the wealthy. When the economy turned around, they didn’t restore the spending cuts. Teachers sick of futile negotiations with local school boards walked off the job and took their case directly to the legislatures. They demanded not only higher salaries, but in many cases, smaller classes, and greater spending on their students. They got massive support from parents

Smart business leaders are waking up to the fact that they are losing the support of Americans, particularly the young. The Business Roundtable, a gathering of some of the most powerful CEOs in the country, recently called on corporations to move beyond a single focus on “shareholder value,” but also invest in their workers, pr otect the environment and deal ethically with suppliers and customers. Whether this is anything beyond a public relations gambit remains to be seen, but the mere fact that the CEOs thought it necessary to publicly release that statement likely suggests tha t they know they have gone too far.

The wave of strikes is increasingly propelled by younger workers. Fight for $15, the movement to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, was led by young workers in fast - food re staurants and other service industries. Young people, often burdened with college debt, entering workplaces characterized by wages and benefits that don’t keep up with costs, are particularly aware of how the economy has been rigged against them. Large maj orities think CEOs are greedy and irresponsible. Large majorities think politicians have been corrupted by entrenched interests and big money. They are driving the demand for change.

Policies that help inform how healthcare resources are allocated; social services are dispensed; where business and industry can reduce financial risk and locate potential markets; or which communities, hospitals and roads need federal funding. These societal concerns are why the U.S. has conducted the Census every 10 years since 1790.
Delta Sigma Theta, an international public service sorority with more than 150,000 members, was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. The BAHA chapter, one of six chapters in the greater Houston metropolitan area, was chartered in 2005 and boasts a membership of over 170 college-educated women who are committed to sharing a common bond of sisterhood, scholarship and service.
In preparation for the 2020 count, The Bay Area Houston Alumnae (BAHA) Chapter of Delta Sigma Sorority, Inc. is partnering with the Office of the Honorable Sylvia Garcia to host the Census 2020 and Information Session. The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 28, at the Harris County Constable Precinct 2 Training Center, 101 Richey St. in Pasadena. BAHA’s Social Action Committee is coordinating the event. “We are proud to partner with Congresswoman Garcia’s office in bringing awareness of the upcoming Census 2020 to our community,” said Shantel Williams, BAHA president.
The sorority is joining with U.S. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (D-TX 29) in urging citizens to help their community by working with the Census. Census 2020 recruiters will present

Blow The Whistle - Trump & The Impeachment Inquiry By Brandon Caldwell
T
he call for an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi came similar to that of a loud, exasperated sigh. “Finally,” some House Democrats would cheer. “Impeachment Party” began trending on social media not soon after Pelosi’s announcement. After months, if not years of desire to remove the 45th President of the United States due to violations of the oath of office, a change happened. The most significant voice of the Democratic Party within Congress gave them what they wanted – a start. What does it all mean for a presidency that has been in the headlines for numerous scandals since January 2017? It’s an explosive and damming moment; one that allows the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives to have full control over how long the
8
process plays out. Trump has been called to be impeached in the House previously during his term. Texas representative Al Green from Houston was the first member of the House to call for impeachment, drafting articles dating back to 2017, Trump’s first year in the White House. Green drew up articles of impeachment in May 2017, less than four months after Trump’s inauguration. He did the same again later that December, garnering 60 Dems to agree with him but not the full majority to trigger an impeachment hearing. Still, Green wasn’t dismayed. He knew he had upset a few within the party calling for Trump’s removal, but instead of backing off, he maintained his belief. Beyond Green, other members of the House had made it their mission to remove Trump from office. Maxine Waters, the longstanding representative

from the state of California, has been a vocal proponent of impeachment since day one. Democratic Michigan representative Rashida Tlaib famously said, “We’re going to impeach [him],” albeit with far more colorful language. Others, such as current senators Cory Booker and Kamala Harris who are running for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 Presidential Election have called for Trump’s impeachment. Back in April, candidate Julián Castro was the first among the field to call for the impeachment of the non-popular Trump. In an interview with Buzzfeed News, Green said of Tuesday’s decision by Pelosi to call for an impeachment inquiry that he felt “vindicated.” “I felt then as I feel now that I’m being vindicated. I said that I would be vindicated and I am being vindicated — the truth has been vindicated,” Green said. “I felt compelled because for me it was
www.stylemagazine.com
about more than making a speech. It was about taking a stand that would be based on principle, not politics.” The inquiry came after a complaint from a whistleblower into a phone call Trump made with the President of Ukraine, allegedly asking for his assistance to gain an advantage over a possible opponent in the 2020 election. That opponent would be former Vice President Joe Biden, whose son Hunter was on the board of a natural gas company in Ukraine. Biden sought to end the corruption within the company and instead, it turned into something else, a Republican talking point. Despite a memo released by the White House alleging no wrongdoing by Trump, it instead drew further criticism from both sides of the political aisle. Those who believe that the impeachment process to remove Trump is a “witch hunt” and those who believe that Trump committed numerous impeachable offenses.
The whistleblower, whose complaint was made public on Thursday, alleges that Trump misused his office for personal gain but that the White House attempted to cover it up. In layman terms, Trump tried to leverage another country into helping him win an election politically. An identical crime to the same obstruction he was suggested to have done with Russia in regards to the 2016 election. In a nine-page document, the whistleblower wrote, “In the course of my official duties, I have received information from multiple U.S. government officials that the President of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.” The call was so alarming to the unidentified intelligence official that he filed the complaint to the inspector general for the United States intelligence agencies. It was not that the President wanted the President of Ukraine to look into Biden but also involve his lawyer, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and current U.S. Attorney General William Barr. He continued, “This interference includes, among other things, pressuring a foreign country to investigate one of the President’s main domestic political rivals. The President’s personal lawyer, Mr. Rudolph W. Giuliani, is a central figure in this effort. Attorney General (William P.) Barr appears to be involved as well.” Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly stated on Twitter that no President has been treated as badly as he has. In various tweets, Trump called the news of an inquiry a “witch hunt,” “garbage,” and more. On Thursday, he suggested that whoever the whistleblower’s source was is “close to a spy” according to The New York Times. “You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart with spies and treason, right?” Trump reportedly told a group of staff from the United States Mission to the United States. “We used to handle it a little differently than we do now.” An impeachment inquiry does not mean that the President would be removed from office at once. It is merely a formal announcement. After an investigation is created and completed by a few House committees whether it be the Intelligence, Judiciary, or Finance Committees, the beginning of the process will commence. First, articles are drafted that clearly outline what crimes and misdemeanors the President has been alleged of doing to harm the United States. Secondly, the articles have to be ratified by the House of Representatives before a trial takes place. The trial occurs in the Senate, and then for a President to be removed from office, two-thirds of the Senate must be in agreement. Twice in American history has a President been impeached, though in both instances neither was removed. Andrew Johnson was the first back in the 1860s, following the end of the Civil War and Reconstruction period. After the House voted to impeach him for high crimes
and misdemeanors, a vote came to the Senate, which could not get a two-thirds majority to remove the 17th president. Richard M. Nixon would have been the second President ever to be impeached after the Watergate scandal, but he resigned before proceedings would have begun in 1974. The House Judiciary Committee drafted three articles against him, including one that cited “false or misleading public statements for the purpose of deceiving the people of the United States.” The third and most recent impeachment trial occurred in 1999. President Bill Clinton’s impeachment was called on by a then Republican-controlled House of Representatives for Clinton’s alleged perjury and obstruction of justice regarding a sexual harassment lawsuit from former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones and his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The Senate also failed to obtain the twothirds votes mandated for impeachment and Clinton remained in office.

Many fear that even if an impeachment vote reaches the Republican-controlled Senate, a two-thirds majority will not convict Trump. What articles the Dems could draw against Trump seem in line with a mixture of the three prior instances, from high crimes and misdemeanors to obstruction of justice. The administration has, in no short order, spent two and a half years under a microscope, due in large part to the dealings of Trump hires for large positions within the Cabinet. There were indictments and convictions of close aides such as former campaign manager Paul Manafort, Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen, his former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and more.

The plain of it regarding Trump is that House Dems could have called an inquiry into previous scandals such as whether or not he was involved in the Russia investigation that spawned the Mueller Report. Or whether or not he was making money via political leaders staying as guests at his numerous hotels and properties under the emoluments clause. Instead, by focusing initially on the whistleblower complaint and all it entails, the House is squaring its focus on something so blatant that even the President’s own White House attempted to cover up to protect him.

However, a strong general public believes that Trump should be punished for all of his crimes committed while in office, not just Ukraine. A laundry list of offenses from hush money to an adult film star with whom he was having an affair, the fact that the Mueller report didn’t exonerate Trump and more. As Black and Brown voices early on called for the removal of Trump, it took a simple phone call and complaint that forced the hand of the rest of the party. There’s only one shot in regards to impeaching a President. The Democrats don’t want to miss perhaps their best chance yet.

Once he steps on the field on Sunday, Allen will be greeted by an old familiar face in Texans quarterback, Deshaun Watson. The two competed in the at the Nike Elite 11 back in 2013 where Allen was the top-rated prospect and Watson was second. The two have remained friends throughout their journeys and even spend time in the off season working out together. “I’ve been throwing with Kyle every offseason since high school,” Watson said. “We worked out at Orange County in college together in the offseason. We threw together this offseason, worked out with Ryan Flaherty and Quincy Avery, so yeah, we’ve been working out pretty much every offseason.”

“Obviously 2-1, it’s decent to be at that record at this point in time, but all three of these games have come down to the last minute of the game,” said Texans head coach Bill O’ Brien when asked about how encouraged he was with the teams great start. That task won’t be easy as the Panthers are coming off a victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Their second-year quarterback, Kyle Allen, who had 261 yards passing and four touchdowns, will be looking for another win in his return to the city of Houston. Allen attended the University of Houston for two years after transferring from Texas A&M. He played in only three games for the Cougars and declared himself eligible for the draft in 2018. “I’ve got people in that area, not as much as Arizona, obviously, but it will be cool to go back

Carolina will have their hands full with Watson who was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance against the Los Angeles Chargers this past Sunday. Watson threw for 351 yards and three touchdowns and became the fourth fastest quarterback to reach 50 passing touchdowns in the Super Bowl era. “It’s always an honor. It’s always cool to be able to receive things like that and get acknowledged for your work and kind of be recognized for that,” said Watson. All-Pro defensive lineman, J.J. Watt knows that the Panthers are loaded on offense but has his eye on one particular player and that’s running back Christian McCaffery who lit up the Cardinals for 153 yards rushing and one touchdown. Watt who had two sacks Sunday hopes to make it a very long day for the dynamic running back. “He can run, he can catch, he can line up anywhere, he can do all sorts of things, and they try and get him the ball any chance they can,” Watt told the media. “We have a great challenge ahead of us and we’re looking forward to it.

• Calling – Drivers can ask Alexa to call friends and family using their voice when they pair their phone via Bluetooth and share their contacts with Amazon.
eneral Motors is bringing millions of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac owners the ability to add convenience and productivity to their daily drives through a new in-vehicle Alexa1 experience coming in the first half of 2020. Leveraging embedded available 4G LTE connectivity and GM’s updateable embedded app framework in the vehicle, GM will make Alexa available on model year 2018 and newer cars, trucks and crossovers with compatible infotainment systems. GM research shows that many customers prefer to use the same voice services they use in their home in their vehicles. The Alexa voice experience in GM vehicles leverages the Alexa Auto Software Development Kit, which gives customers access to standard Alexa skills and capabilities. This will also enable GM to create custom skills in the future that are relevant to the customer’s vehicle. This collaboration represents the broadest rollout of an embedded Alexa Auto experience to date, and provides a tailored voice experience for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac drivers with properly equipped vehicles.
Drivers can enjoy Alexa by using simple voice commands, all while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel: Check the news, control smart home devices like lights or thermostats, add items to their shopping cart, and access tens of thousands of Alexa skills. Additionally, GM is delivering several categories of Alexa features that expand on the in-vehicle experience, including: • Navigation – Ask Alexa to get directions to a specific address or point

of interest, such as a vehicle dealer, or just ask for nearby coffee shops. Alexa seamlessly integrates with compatible, embedded navigation systems in the vehicle or available OnStar Turn-by-Turn navigation using natural language. • Media – Ask Alexa to play a specific song, artist, genre, or station, as well as audiobooks or podcasts. Alexa can fulfill the request by bringing up available streaming services.
“Customers already love using Alexa at home, and soon they can bring her with them on the go, whether they’re looking for a new car or own a compatible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle already on the road,” added Ned Curic, VP of Alexa Auto at Amazon. “We’re thrilled to be working with GM to help their customers stay more connected, more entertained, and more productive.” This integration represents the latest collaboration between GM and Amazon. In 2018, GM launched in-car delivery with Key by Amazon and a series of Connected Car skills for Alexa, available on millions of eligible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles in select cities. More information about how customers can set up Alexa will be shared closer to launch. More information can be found at http://www.gm.com.

“The Water Dancer” by Ta-Nehisi Coates © 2019, One World $28.00 / $37.00 Canada 416 pages

ou can’t breathe.
There’s really no describing the panic when that happens. Your ribs struggle to rise, your chest feels like it’s being stomped, you’re on fire, and your brain screams. Your arms flail. Your hands grasp at nothing, and then – ahhhhh, you gasp. And in the new novel, “The Water Dancer” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, nothing’s better than the first breath of freedom’s air. Hiram was drowning. One minute, he was in the carriage and the next, he and the horse were struggling in the water. Oddly, though, the lack of breath, seeing his half-brother float away, tasting mud on the riverbanks, none of that bothered him. He thought he saw his mother dancing on the bridge, but she was sold away years ago; the water felt familiar but everything did, all the time. Hi grew up knowing he had a gift that allowed him to see his ancestors and to remember everything, and this drowning was one of those things.
12
September 26 – October 2, 2019
He woke up in a bed wearing fresh clothes that belonged to his half-brother, Maynard. Hi’s father – the man who owned him – was weeping because Maynard was lost, and Hi realized then that whatever relationship he’d had with his white father was over. His life at the great house on Virginia’s Lockless Plantation, over. That his father looked the other way when Hiram showed interest in Sophia, a housegirl Hi delivered every weekend to his father’s brother for reasons Hi preferred not to think about… done. His whole life was spent as a Tasker for people who owned him, toiling for Quality folk and thinking that if he did the right things, he’d be rewarded with some sort of equality or freedom or…. Or he’d been fooling himself. He’d never be equal to the Quality. He’d never love who he wanted to love, or know for certain that he’d never be sold Natchez-way. And that meant just one thing. It was time to run.
www.stylemagazine.com
Hunched over. That’s what you’ll be with “The Water Dancer”: hunched over as you read, to protect your heart from this story and because the anticipation of what’s to come is too much to handle if you’re upright. Using a little magic, the full meaning of which may not become totally clear until nearly the end of this tale, author Ta-Nehisi Coates captivates readers with language rich and reminiscent of poetry or song. The beauty of those words is calming-not-calming, like lying on a fresh-smelling, springy bed of moss on the edge of quiet woods, waiting to hear heavy footsteps you know are coming. Cue the ominous music, but don’t think that this is a horror novel. No, it’s more of an escape-novel-thriller-love-story-drama-history with a cast of characters that couldn’t seem more real. One of them, in fact, was real so look for her and don’t worry if the plot of this book doesn’t make sense at first; it will soon enough. Just settle, let the words wash in, and “The Water Dancer” will knock the breath out of you.
