COMMENTARY
Senate Standing In The Way Of Needed Reforms By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
A
mericans are disgusted that Washington has become dysfunctional, even as Americans struggle with ever greater challenges – from stagnant wages and growing inequality to catastrophic climate change to soaring health-care costs to a decrepit and dangerously aged infrastructure. Donald Trump blames House Democrats, saying they are “getting nothing done in Congress.” Don’t believe it. The record is clear: The Democratic majority in the House has passed major reforms that would begin to address America’s challenges. All of them have been blocked by Republicans in the Senate, led by Mitch McConnell,
who calls himself the “grim reaper” dedicated to killing reform. As of July, in their first half year as the majority, House Democrats had passed a total of 569 bills that are blocked in the Senate. These include major reforms that would make America better. Consider: The For the People Act – HR 1 – contained the most comprehensive campaign finance and voting reforms since the 1965 Voting Rights Act. It would have made it easier to register to vote, harder to gerrymander districts, forced disclosure of secret funds, required paper ballots to limit election

The House isn’t paralyzed; the Senate is. As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi summarized, “the Senate is the graveyard where bills that pass in the Congress, that have bipartisan support in the country, go to die.” For McConnell and Republicans, paralysis is a partisan political ploy. McConnell openly brags about the strategy. With Trump dominating the air waves, they believe that they can pin the blame for legislative paralysis on the Democrats. Now Trump uses paralysis as part of his defense strategy, arguing falsely that Democrats can’t investigate his crimes and legislate good reforms at the same time. McConnell doesn’t even deign to offer an alternative agenda, and the Trump administration doesn’t have one. When Republicans controlled everything for two years after Trump’s election, they passed only two notable reforms: an obscene tax bill that benefited the rich and the CEOs, and a decent criminal justice reform bill that made the first steps toward reducing mass incarceration. Republicans failed to offer a coherent alternative to the Affordable Care Act. They failed to offer a serious plan to rebuild our infrastructure. The administration rolled back protections of our air and water, and Republicans looked the other way. The paralysis in Washington won’t change until McConnell and Senate Republicans start losing elections. They are standing in the way of reforms this country desperately needs. And they will continue to do so, until voters move them out of the way.

COMMUNITY NEWS Senator Borris L. Miles Announce Miles Ahead Scholars Program to Support Boys of Color By: Style Magazine Newswire
S
enator Borris L. Miles announced that Houston ISD will hold an inaugural celebration for a new program this Friday at 10 AM at Worthing High School (9215 Scott St.), the Miles Ahead Scholars Program. The program is designed to improve academic outcomes for African-American and Hispanic boys and close the persistent gender gap between minority boys and girls attending college. The program focuses on forming cohorts of male students with academic promise and from high schools underrepresented among top colleges and universities. The program includes shared classes, developmental programming and college and career counseling. “Helping more young, black and brown men go to college has been a priority of mine, even before I became an elected official. For many years, I have provided college scholarships and mentoring for young, black men through a non-profit,” said Senator Miles. “The Miles Ahead Scholars Program will work toward making college attendance a reality for these students.” The Miles Ahead Program will be-
tion. Funding comes from $22 million from the Texas Education Agency secured by Senator Miles during the 2019 legislative session. The program has dedicated staff to allow the students to achieve the very high goals and expectations of the program. Instructional specialists will ensure that the boys maintain a competitive GPA and are eligible and ready for university success including hard and soft skills necessary to succeed in college. They will receive mentorship from men of color in the community who can share their personal and professional experiences with the students. “Having these students learn and work together is a proven, successful model,” said Senator Miles. “I look forward to watching these boys grow up to be young leaders in our community.”

HEALTH
Entertainment Exec Mathew Knowles: I Have Breast Cancer By: Style Magazine Newswire / American Heart Association News His relationship with the AHA is why he chose to reveal what he’s been through with American Heart Association News in advance of his public disclosure Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” So far, so good for Knowles.
O
Since the mastectomy, he’s been exercising more, watching what he eats and drinking less alcohol. He’s lost 15 pounds and hopes to drop 10 more. He’s also begun taking medicine to control his blood pressure and meditating to manage stress.
The next night, he saw another red dot on his T-shirt. It was in the same area, near his right nipple. Although he laughs about being the kind of guy who wants an MRI to make sure a headache is only a headache, he continued to downplay it.
As a former college basketball player who’s endured five surgeries related to his athletic career, Knowles has long been in tune with his body. A family history of heart disease and cancer also has helped him be vigilant with his medical care.
Days later, Knowles saw it again. He mentioned it to his wife. Come to think of it, she said, she’d seen red spots on their bed sheets in recent days.
Still, when he squeezed his right nipple and blood emerged, his first thought was to find a simple reason for it.
ne night in July, entertainment executive Mathew Knowles peeled off his white undershirt and noticed a red dot on it. He thought it was lint. It wasn’t, but he hardly gave the speck another thought.
Now Knowles was curious enough to squeeze his right nipple. Out came blood, beginning a series of events with potentially life-altering ramifications for himself and his family, including his daughters Beyoncé and Solange. Knowles turned out to be one of the rare men with breast cancer. Further testing uncovered that he has a mutation of one of the so-called “breast cancer genes,” specifically BRCA2. That discovery may explain why he developed cancer in his right breast, and it means he’s at a higher risk of developing other forms of cancer. He’s already had a mastectomy of his right breast and is planning one for the left side to be safe. Aggressive, proactive response to the risks associated with this genetic mutation became part of the national conversation years ago when actress Angelina Jolie learned that she had the BRCA1 mutation and opted for a preventive double mastectomy. She then had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to guard against ovarian cancer. The fact that Knowles has the mutation gives each of his children a 50% chance of having it. If any females have it, their risks increase sharply for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. As a longtime volunteer for the American Heart Association, Knowles knew he was fighting more than cancer, the No. 2 killer of Americans. Cancer patients can experience cardiac complications related to treatments including chemotherapy and radiation or as a result of the hormonal changes that follow procedures such as removal of the ovaries.
Was he taking any new medicines? No. “Did I hurt myself somehow?” he thought. “Could it be related to working out? Was it from something I ate? Are the cleaners using different chemicals?” Once he eliminated those options, he considered breast cancer. In addition to losing several relatives to it, the disease also was top of mind because his wife’s mom is battling it and, in January, his wife’s sister died of it. Tiffany Smith was 49. Her case made the news because her husband, Rick Smith, resigned as general manager of the NFL’s Houston Texans to care for her and their three kids. Along the way, Knowles saw the toll breast cancer took on her and her family. While he figured it unlikely that he had breast cancer, Knowles couldn’t rule it out. For several years, Knowles has closed speeches by telling about the time he was at the Los Angeles International Airport and a woman gave him a card that read: “Pray not for a life free from trouble. Pray for triumph over trouble. What you and I call adversity, God calls opportunity.” Now, he has a new appreciation for that sentiment. “My opportunity is to help people have awareness of the BRCA gene (mutation) and of male breast cancer,” he said. “Things happens for a reason. I’m grateful for this opportunity to save myself, hopefully save my family and hopefully impact the world in an extremely positive way.”

Mourning the Life of Trailblazing Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal First Sikh Officer in the History of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office By: Style Magazine Newswire

ongresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, issued this statement in honor of the life of Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, first Sikh officer of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office: “I remain heartbroken on the news of the death of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, whom we lost while Deputy Dhaliwal was making a traffic stop on Friday afternoon. I admired the distinct policing of Deputy Dhaliwal and was compelled to visit with his survivors and the community that nurtured him and which he loved—the Sikh community—to convey the sense of the United States Congress that his loss has left a gaping hole in collective our heart. On Saturday, I attended a candlelit vigil and spoke of the greatness of Deputy Dhaliwal’s service. And, as the city and the community has come to terms with his untimely death, the effect of the positive impact he had on Houston and Harris County has been manifest, as evidenced by the thousands and thousands of mourners who have turned out to remember this man, his selflessness and his bravery. He beamed with pride for his profession and was a stalwart advocate for law enforcement, and for the sacrifices that law enforcement makes daily for those whom they are charged to protect and serve. Monday’s vigil was not just a moment to remember the bravery of Deputy Dhaliwal, it was also a moment for our community to remember the impact he had on our

civic life and the decency he had for his fellow man. This is because the site of the vigil was named after another fallen officer, Deputy Darren Goforth based, in part, on Deputy Dhaliwal’s advocacy. That is the man whom we have mourned since he was taken from us on Friday.” “The impact made by Deputy Dhaliwal, during his short time with us, has been profound, and on Sunday it compelled me to come to offer condolences to the Sikh National Center, the Gurudwara where Deputy Dhaliwal’s family worships and where I was honored to recognize him for his kindness, strength, service and involvement in the community and to convey the simple truth that our nation stands in solidarity with the Sikh community. It was important that he was recognized, by a senior member of the House of Representatives as “a true American patriot.” These values are the essence of law enforcement that is discussed often in the United States House Judiciary Committee. And it was important for Deputy Dhaliwal’s family to know that America mourns with the Dhaliwal Family. America is a place of justice and she will not rest until justice comes to the Sikhs of America. When the House again convenes for session. I will ask the House for a moment of silence in Deputy Dhaliwal’s honor.” “Deputy Dhaliwal will be deeply missed, and my most sincere sympathies are with his wife, three children and the countless Harris County residents—and indeed around the world— who were touched by Dep. Dhaliwal’s bravery, courage and selflessness.”

The expression of beauty through hairstyles has been a long-standing signature of Black women. Most women of color use their hairstyles as a personal expression of who they are and to show the evolution of Black culture over time. This is an evolution which has brought more and more Black women to re-embrace the natural beauty of their hair. October 1st was declared as National She’s Happy Hair Day by Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner. The veteran, black-owned Hair Company has been making a difference in black communities for over 7 years. CEO and Founder Warren Broadnax stated “it is more than an honor to have October 1st as She’s Happy Hair Day. It is an opportunity to help the Black culture understand the emotional significance hair has in our community and understand the effects. Every lady has her own hair journey and She’s Happy Hair is very proud to be a part of it”. Owners Warren Broadnax and Marcus Bowers built the She’s Happy Hair Empire from basically nothing. They both were raised in the inner-city and truly understood what it is like to struggle. Growing up in some of the poorest areas of Houston, TX they were faced with many adversities in their lives. In 2012 the Houston Natives decided to put all of the cash they had into starting a hair business; which totaled $900 and began selling hair from the trunk of their cars. From that investment the company is now the number 1 Virgin Hair Supplier in America and has grown into a multi-million dollar company; with locations across the United States

and a very strong international online presence. After successfully setting up locations across the United States and growing into a household name; the company partnered with both Walmart and Macy’s this year. “The opportunity for two young black entrepreneurs to be in Macy’s and Walmart is huge and represents growth in the black community. It helps black entrepreneurs see that anything is possible with hard work and the right attitude”, says Owner and Founder Marcus Bowers. This is only the beginning. This fast-growing company will also be opening additional locations across the United States in the immediate future. Giving back to the community is very important for the She’s Happy Hair team; after doing community givebacks for the past six years they launched the She’s Happy Foundation. Always having a sense of social responsibility, She’s Happy Hair has nationwide community givebacks in every city that operates a She’s Happy Hair location. These givebacks include transforming their locations into barbershops just in time for back to school, free backpacks filled with school supplies, Christmas pictures and toys from Chocolate Santa, as well as, free community makeovers, adopt a family program every month for families in need, and so much more. In celebration of She’s Happy Hair Day, the company will be launching a brand-new website, offering customer financing, and giving customers an opportunity to text the word “HAPPY” to 888-111 for a chance to win FREE HAIR for a year.

ou know, though, it’s not close enough to where you want to be. You need to be where decisions are made and careers are launched. No, your place at the table is close to the head and with “The Memo” by Minda Harts you’ll see how to get there. Several years ago, a book circulated among businesswomen that advised them to “lean in,” speak up, and coalesce. Harts says she eagerly read the book but, once finished, she was confused. Like most women of color in business, she’d always “leaned in” because she had to. That book spurred her to come up with The Memo. “The Ugly Truth,” she says, is that few organizations teach women of color how to deal with mostly-white workplaces. It’s not just a matter of showing up and doing the work; you need to survive and build “your squad.” In business-speak, that’s networking, and it’s top of the list in importance. You may not feel like going to Happy Hour with coworkers who’ve irritated you all day but go anyhow. By joining in, even for a minute, you give people a chance to get to know you. You might find an office friend. For women of color, office politics are two-pronged: you must learn “respectability politics” in addition to the other kind. Having a mentor will help; in the meantime, don’t burn bridges, don’t gossip, and watch your emotions at work. It sounds like just another platitude, but know your worth. Invest in yourself and stand out, then get the self-con-
fidence you need to ask for what you want. Just remember, salary isn’t the only thing to request: more vacation, a company car, and flex-time are all nice bargaining chips.
APRENDE MÁS. HAZ MÁS. COMPARTE MÁS.
Finally, if you’re white and reading this book, pay attention. Says Harts, “… women of color will be the majority of the workforce by… 2060; if I were a white woman, I would do better.” There is no denying the usefulness of this book, nor its truth. “The Memo” offers helpful words for those who are the lone women of color at their workplaces. It teaches strength in the face of racism, on hair issues, self-confidence, and for anyone who needs to school coworkers while keeping her job. It gives young women of color a sisterhood, albeit one made of paper. And yet, there’s discord in this book that a deeper look exposes. At two particular points here, author Minda Harts chastises white women for making assumptions and “sweeping generalizations about ‘women’” without addressing any of the unique challenges that women of color face at work. This creates a paradox, since readers may notice overgeneralizations about white women that don’t allow room for those who are not clueless. That sets up further conundrums, to be sure. Overall, go into “The Memo” looking for help and you’ll absolutely find it, just as you’ll find that you’re not alone. Go in eyes-wide-open when you take on this book.
