COMMENTARY
To His Wealthy Donors, Trump Is Their Grifter By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
T
o decipher President Donald Trump’s presidency, apply the basic rule of politics: Follow the money.
Muslims and the homeless. He’s pugnacious, funny and outrageous. They know he’s a bad guy, but they think he’s their bad guy. And that is the con.
Last month, for example, Trump performed at rallies in North Carolina and in New Mexico. He entertained adoring crowds, clad in Trump’s MAGA caps and T-shirts.
The anonymous donors who are contributing record amounts to Trump’s campaign don’t wear MAGA hats. They don’t go to public rallies.
The rallies got featured on Fox and other news stations. Then Trump flew to California and went to a series of big-dollar fundraisers that were closed to the public, pocketing what his campaign boasted as more than $15 million in campaign funding, largely from anonymous wealthy donors. This is only a small part of the record campaign war chest that the wealthy are building for Trump’s re-election campaign. The press treats the overwhelmingly white, working class audiences at Trump’s rallies as his “base.” But they are more his marks than his base. The anonymous wealthy donors in California have a far better claim to be the base that he serves. The donors got the tax cuts; the working people at his rallies got health care cuts. The CEOs got the roll-back of clean water and clean air regulations; his rally audiences got the fouled water and more kids with emphysema.
POLITICAL
They roll their eyes at Trump’s rambling rants and racial taunts. They aren’t on strike or in the streets. They are getting a great return on their investment and are happy to ante up again. President Trump
Big oil and coal executives got lavish public subsidies; teachers and parents got cuts in school funding. Big Agra got billions in payoffs to make up for Trump’s trade war; family farmers were casualties, many bankrupted by the loss of markets, with Wisconsin’s small farmers suffering the worst. Auto executives enjoyed record profits; auto workers suffered more layoffs and plant closings. The rich saw their wealth soar; working people faced rising prices in housing, health care, college, cars — with incomes that didn’t keep up. Trump brags on the record-low unemployment numbers, but the jobs too often don’t pay a living wage and Trump and Republicans won’t even allow a vote on raising the minimum wage. Not surprisingly, workers are begin-

GM autoworkers are involved in the largest strike in years. Teachers in red states across the country have gone on strike to demand greater investment in schools. Nurses are on strike for decent wages and better staffing of hospitals and clinics. Fast food and restaurant workers have led marches for a $15 minimum wage and a union. Young people are marching to protest Trump’s refusal to address the clear and present threat posed by catastrophic climate change. Trump regales the crowds at his rallies with scurrilous attacks on his opponents, lies and tales about his accomplishments, and boasts about the economy. He panders to their fears, fanning racial division, railing against immigrants and
The Trump economy doesn’t work for most Americans, but it works for them. Trump keeps his promises — and his payoffs — to them. They know Trump is a grifter, but he’s their grifter. They are all in on the con. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

Kamala Harris Teams Up With Maxine Waters On $13 Billion Plan to End Homelessness B
By HuffPost.com
Rep.Maxine Waters and Senator Kamala Harris
en. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who is running for president, introduced a bill Thursday that would invest billions of more dollars in affordable housing and other initiatives to prevent homelessness. The “Ending Homelessness Act,” which was co-sponsored by Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.), would give an additional $13.27 billion over five years to create an estimated 400,000 affordable

housing units. The funds would go to supportive housing, including homeless shelters and transitional housing, as well as housing vouchers for low-income families and local outreach services to homeless residents. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) introduced a similar bill in the House in March, which passed in committee and is expected to go to the House floor.
October 10 – October 16, 2019
“Too many people don’t have a safe place to call home. We must act quickly to tackle our country’s homelessness crisis head on,” Harris said in a news release. “The women and men who woke up this morning on a bench or under an overpass cannot afford to wait.” The lack of affordable housing is a nationwide crisis, and California has one of the highest rates of homelessness. On any given day in January 2018, more than

500,000 people were homeless in the U.S., according to a federal report. Nearly a quarter of the nation’s homeless residents live in California. In the past two years, homelessness has spiked in Los Angeles, parts of which Waters represents, and the San Francisco Bay Area, where Harris is from and had served as district attorney. President Donald Trump went on a tear last month about homelessness in California, notably complaining about how people living in tents were ruining the “prestige” of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Some of Harris’ fellow 2020 contenders have also zeroed in on homelessness in recent weeks, with former Housing Secretary Julián Castro and former Congressman Beto O’Rourke both visiting California last month to speak with people in homeless encampments. The funds for Harris’ and Waters’ legislation would be appropriated from mandatory emergency relief funding, according to a news release ― but Harris’ team said it was still to be determined, namely through processes in the Senate committee, exactly where the funds would be drawn from. Deepak Chopra On the Healing Power of “Love-in-Action” By Allison Kugel, Special to Style
D
locations?
eepak Chopra has been a mentor of mine from the day of my first interview with him more than a decade ago. I will never forget the day in 2008 when I asked him to explain such existential concepts as the distinction between the brain, mind and soul; the concepts of space and time, and how meditation benefits our physical and mental health. His answers then were clear and precise and without hesitation; on my end it felt like waking up from a dream and setting about on a continuous path of discovery. He and I sat down once again, this time to unpack the pressing issues of isolation, anxiety and depression and the growing epidemic of suicidal ideation and suicide, which has taken sharp incline over the past eighteen years. Deepak Chopra is now part of a team spearheading the Never Alone movement, a grassroots movement that aims to create community-led organizations around the world to help people in emotional distress who need community support. Never Alone is being funded through a GoFundMe campaign that has already surpassed its original goal. In tandem, Deepak Chopra, has released his latest book, Metahuman (Harmony Books/Random House), which delves into the true essence of our nature when we break free of societal constructs and embrace a higher level of consciousness and greater zest for living on this planet. Allison Kugel: The subject matter we are about to discuss is an uncomfortable one, but one that needs to be addressed because we are losing too many people. I looked at some World Health Orgaabeen a 60% increase in suicides over the past 45 years, with a 30% increase since 2001. My first question for you is simply… why? Deepak Chopra: We are living in a culture that aggrandizes narcissism and the whole idea of a separate self. People are constantly engaged in social media, and in general media as well. All of this leads to a performance anxiety in a sense. Am I relevant if I’m not being noticed? On the one hand, social networks are supposed to increase our connectivity. In one sense they do, because we can communicate more effectively. But it also increases our isolation if we don’t get noticed. Young adults, in particular, are at a very delicate stage of their life where they’re beginning to wonder about their identity. As young children, we never wonder about identity. We are just happy, without wondering about self-esteem and all those things. As we enter adolescence, identity becomes an issue and we are still forging our identities. Today our identity is all about, “Am I important? Am I relevant?” It’s not even about knowing who we are at a fundamental level. Allison Kugel: I remember seeing my son, up until about the age of three, exhibit this pure unadulterated confidence and joy that emanated from his being. I have a video of him at the age of 15 or 16 months, where he’s running through a field and cracking himself up for no reason; just happy to be running
6
in the grass. Why do we lose that joy and that feeling of wholeness, of being enough just as we are, as we get older?
Deepak Chopra
Deepak Chopra: You are very right in your observation. The poet Rabindranath Tagore is quoted as having said that “every child that’s born is proof that God has not given up on human beings (paraphrased).” Children are naturally joyful and loving and have empathy and compassion and playfulness as their innate traits. The rest is the hypnosis of social conditioning. Unfortunately, it gets recycled through every generation and now it’s getting worse because of our ability to communicate our self-importance. Self-esteem is natural, in our natural state. We are confusing [self-esteem] with self-image, which is the ego-bound identity. Self-image constantly needs validation or else it feels very fearful.
Deepak Chopra: We can resign ourselves and say the human experiment has failed; that the human species was an interesting idea on behalf of nature’s evolutionary impulse, but it didn’t work. We can resign ourselves and wait for our collective extinction where we just go to the bar and get a drink, which will numb us even more, and which people are doing with drugs and alcohol and other addictions. This is mostly linked to this massive epidemic of suicide and depression. Or, we can do something about it and hope for the best. What I have discovered through careful observation and as a physician, is that when people support each other in anything, and it doesn’t matter what it is, it is healing. When we support each other, the outcome of whatever that condition is that a person is struggling with, it does improve. This is what has led me to the opportunity to create, both, online and real-time communities where people can support each other for a more peaceful, just, sustainable, healthier and joyful existence. Ultimately, this is the purpose of life, to experience our innate joy. That comes automatically through empathy, which leads to compassion, which then leads to the desire to relieve another person’s suffering.
Allison Kugel: I’ve noticed a pattern in the 21st century where we are being pushed to the brink in so many ways. We have extreme weather patterns, mass shootings, more chronic illness, more narcissism and certainly more anxiety and depression. And we have more people who are medicated than ever before. What is all this pushing us towards? And what is the spiritual reason for it all? Deepak Chopra: A lot of what you are seeing is the mental health of a collective mind, or a collective humanity, that has created a world with all the things you mentioned. We’ve seen extinction in every other life form, but now we’re ready for our own extinction. The last extinction was sixty-five million years ago as a result of a meteorite hitting the earth, when dinosaurs were wiped out. We learned as a result of that extinction. But now if we have our next extinction, it will be as a result of human behavior. If this is not collective insanity… If we don’t acknowledge it then we are decreeing our own insanity. We need to understand our personal role in this collective insanity. Suicide and depression are symptoms of our collective conditioned mind. We treat hate to be normal. We treat the psychopathology of our everyday existence as normal. So numb have we become. And so immune have we become to the cruelty that happens every day in the world. Allison Kugel: What if you’re an empath, and internalize everything,
October 10 – October 16, 2019
and you’re in a constant state of feeling the pain of everybody and everything?
Allison Kugel: For all the empaths out there, including myself, the answer is to not just feel the pain of the world, but to take loving action towards solutions where and when you can. Deepak Chopra: Right, because compassion leads to love, and it leads to lovein-action. Love-in-action leads to healing. Love without action is irrelevant. And action without love is also meaningless. This is an opportunity for us to create a self-sustaining ecosystem where people support each other and help each other. Helping each other is the best way to help ourselves. Allison Kugel: You’re a part of creating the Never Alone movement to provide support communities around the world, which we hope will prevent suicide and help people feel connected to real support systems. How will the Never Alone platform work, and will it be accessible to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and geographic
www.stylemagazine.com
Deepak Chopra: Right now, the Never Alone platform will be run by GoFundMe. We are helping create an advisory board for the GoFundMe campaign. Our goal is to create self-sustaining grassroots movements across the world, because even in very impoverished parts of the world, people now have access to wireless technology. In wisdom traditions, a healthy community has three things: people dedicated to serving the community; spiritual practice of reflective self-inquiry and getting together with other people in the community. Today we can do that online, but we can also do that by creating our own localized communities and centers. This is not a Deepak Chopra campaign, or anyone’s campaign. It should be a totally grassroots, self-sustaining campaign where we create an ecosystem for helping each other in [times of] distress. Allison Kugel: With the film The Offering that you’ve recently raised funding for, this is not a documentary, correct? This is a work of fiction that is based on real stories about suicide? Deepak Chopra: The actress Gabriella Wright, her sister was a very accomplished musical artist in Europe who committed suicide at the age of 28 or 29. This is a film for awareness, in which actress Gabriella Wright is playing the role of a mother whose son commits suicide. We hope to use the film as a tool for bringing awareness to this cause, and to the Never Alone movement. When you give facts alone, some people are moved by the facts, like you were moved by the statistics. But by themselves, facts can be very dry. When they are linked to an emotional response, people feel compelled to look at the facts in a different way. We are hoping that The Offering will be a film that will bring some insight to the epidemic of loneliness. The film is only one aspect of this movement. After that, the goal of the Never Alone movement is to encourage other people to produce videos and films, and to share stories to increase awareness and create their own communities both offline and online. Deepak Chopra: I hesitate to answer that, because I don’t really know that that’s one of the reasons for the increasing epidemic of suicides. Many people do not have insight into the true nature of their soul. In the past, if you spoke about the soul or the spirit, a lot of people considered themselves scientists and secular, and they would roll their eyes and look away because you’re not talking science. Right now, there’s a big discussion among scientists about what fundamental reality is. Is fundamental reality physical, or is fundamental reality non- perceptual and in the realm of what you and I would call the soul? Scientists are now struggling with a good physical explanation for what we call “consciousness.” There’s no biological explanation for consciousness. Read full story on stylemagazine.com.

The Debate Over METRO’s Proposed $3.5 Billion Bond Issue
HoustonPublicMedia.org f you vote in Harris County, you’ll find a request on the ballot next month from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO). The agency is asking voters to approve a $3.5 billion bond issue to expand bus and rail service and make other improvements. METRO says the plan is designed to get more riders on board as the region’s population grows. In turn, greater transit use would get more vehicles off the roads. While proponents agree the upgrades are needed, some opponents say METRO isn’t spending its money responsibly. METRO hopes to correct these kind of issues through the bond issue.

During the 2019 world championships in Stuttgart, Germany, over the weekend, Biles made history with two signature moves—on the floor and the balance beam—one of which will be added to the growing list of gravity-defying feats that will henceforth be named after her. (Biles already has a move on the floor and one on the vault named after her, per CNN.) For a move to be named after a gymnast, he or she must submit it for consideration and then land it at a major competition like the Olympics or the world championships, according to NPR. After that, the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG), which governs the sport, must give its approval. During her floor routine, she landed a triple double—which is now officially dubbed the Biles II.

FEATURE
Brian J. White Adds a New Title in Psycho Thriller By Totally Randie, Style Feature Writer
I
t is officially spooky season and what a better way to cap it off than with a psychological thriller, drama, comedy? Yes, the “Dear Frank” movie, a Muddy Waters Pictures & Webber Films production is shaking up Hollywood with a merge of genres that hasn’t been seen. The drama centers on Brian White (“Moonlight,” “Stomp the Yard”) as husband, Frank, and Claudia Jordan (“Middle Men,” “Love is Not Enough.”) as his wife, Beth. After Beth is poisoned, Frank discovers a secret diary with a list of past lovers who now have become suspects in her murder. Written by Luis Montalvo, “Dear Frank” tells the multi-layered story of a heartbroken husband, seeking revenge and murder from his wife’s secret affairs. Frank is conflicted with drama and hardship as he faces Beth’s infidelity in this tense and unsettling mystery/thriller. Throw in the comedic relief from Torrei Hart and Lil Durk and you have a roller coaster ride of twist and turns that leaves you wanting more! Of course, Houston Style Magazine got a chance to speak with a legend in the making actor, Brian J. White, himself, an up and coming actress and co-star Kearia Schroeder. Brian J. White has been in literally everything, from “Scandal,” to “The Family Stone,” to “Never Heard,” he is becoming a legend in the making. As the son of NBA Hall of Famer, Jo Jo White, preps for Layla’s (his daughter) soccer game, he talks to us about getting his feet wet with directing, joining Columbus Short on the silver screen again, Frank and more. TotallyRandie: It’s always a privilege to have one of the greats come to HSM and speak with us. So, thank you. How did you join the Dear Frank project? Brian J. White: Claudia Jordan and I grew up together, and so we’re friends. She just simply called me up and asked me how I felt about playing the husband role. I read the script and I thought wow it was great, and I had some comedic ideas, she said come down for a meeting and the rest is, as they say, is history. TotallyRandie: And co-director? How did that come about? White: Josh Webber and I had been familiar with each other; I didn’t know he was on the film as a producer. So they asked if I could help fill in the rest
8
of the pages and as I mentioned before I had comedic Ideas and so this is a Black comedic thriller and it’s not anything like it on the market. This film is meant to entertain. There is a message, but it’s meant to entertain. I am a huge fan of Jordan Peel and Woody Allen. So, it was exciting to me as a filmmaker and we just started to build from there with Josh being the lead director and myself co-directing and telling the story from behind the camera. TotallyRandie: How did that change your perspective from behind the camera? White:Vast appreciation for how many balls you are juggling. It just magnifies the idea of how an excellent film, TV episode or play is executed. So, Yes, hats off to everyone’s expertise. TotallyRandie: Have you always wanted to direct? White:Directing has always been the goal. Since “Stomp the Yard,” Savon White is one of the most talented studied directors that I know. So that was enlightenment for me to learn everything, study my craft. It’s a marathon and not a sprint. TotallyRandie: Did you have any input for the casting of the film? White:Yes and no. I mean a lot of it was organic. I mean her scene is called a cameo but it’s more than that. Her time on screen is well spent and it’s a big deal conveying in a comedic way how to deal with grief and how to process it. So, we had a vision of what we wanted and Torrei and Lil Durk was perfect for those roles. TotallyRandie: You and Columbus Short have great on-screen chemistry. White:Oh yes! Columbus was my first call. It was a really great opportunity to spend time with a person I love doing something we love which is creating great art. In choosing Columbus, we get to explore a Cain and Abel type of relationship. George and Frank are a conversation piece within itself and Columbus is extremely talented and brings exactly what is needed to his character. So, I was excited to do something substantial with Columbus again. TotallyRandie: Let’s talk about Frank. What part of Frank is Brian and what challenges did this character pose to you?
October 10 – October 16, 2019
White: Frank was a challenge because I am not that emotional myself. He started as this perfect person and when his world is shattered, he had to deal with what he had to become next. I totally relate to the married part. I mean I am standing here looking at my perfect life now, my daughter getting ready to go to a soccer game and I think to myself if my life would have crashed and burned like him, what would I do how would I react.
Kearia Schroeder: When I read the script, I thought this is so different for me. I am so used to playing the pretty girl, I mean I’m still playing the pretty girl in this role, however, this was a challenge because of the twist and turns that obviously I can’t tell because you have to go and see it. But it was exciting to take on such a challenge that wasn’t like anything I’ve ever done. This role was juicy and fun and not the norm for me.
TotallyRandie: And speaking of that, do you have a work life balance? How do you balance it?
TotallyRandie: Now coming from such a strong dancer background, did you use that training to assist you in the role that you are playing for “Dear Frank”?
White: I always make decisions with my family. We sit down at dinner and talk about our goals and what’s best for our family. Hollywood is just the job. Jobs come and go but nothing comes before family, integrity goes a long way. I always lead with values, my values, and my family values. TotallyRandie: Let’s have fun. What’s your favorite food in your favorite city? White: Pappasitos and Pappadeaux in Houston. Cause I used to live on San Felipe at the Woodway Square Apartments, and I used to go get bacon wrapped shrimp. TotallyRandie: It’s your movie, you are producing it and you can pick any person to act with you who would that be? White: Hmmm I think it would depend on the specifics of the character I don’t have one person I’d love to work with. Um, Naomi Harris, she’s amazing or Michael B [Jordan] he’s pretty amazing, I’d like to do a project with him. It’s quite a few people that I would love to work with. As we wrapped up the interview, it was refreshing to hear him breaking the interview to answer questions from his daughter, it showed that he makes her a priority. White is currently working on a bunch of projects: “Sky’s the Limit” with BET, “Monogamy” for Amazon with Vanessa Simmons and a host of other great cameos, “Ambitions” on OWN (a series with Will Packer) and more. Kearia Schroeder is a passionate actress with a knack for stealing the show. Although she is new to Hollywood, her vast experience as an accomplished dancer makes her no stranger to the entertainment industry. Born to a military family, Schroeder’s early life was characterized by exotic travels. It wasn’t until she moved to Atlanta that she polished her dancing and acting skills. She plays Carrie, the wife of George [Columbus Short] and sister-in-law to Frank. TotallyRandie: How did this role align with your purpose and trajectory as an actress?
www.stylemagazine.com
Schroeder: Well, as a dancer we learn to channel our emotions and things of that nature within our body movements. So, I would have to say yes, anytime I’m acting, it’s still the dancer in me because movement adds that extra layer to your audience. Especially, this role because of the energies’ change, I go from very sweet to very hard. It’s amazing to see your body transform to enlighten that character. TotallyRandie: How was performing with a seasoned actor like Brian J. White as a co-star and co-director? Schroeder: Well, this is my second time project with Brian, and of course, it was nothing short of amazing because working with a vet, always sharpens your skills. You want to work with the vets, so this experience was amazing. Brian gives you really good notes and steers you in the right direction to enhance your character even more. TotallyRandie: So, let’s talk about your character Carrie. Is there any part of her that Kearia relates to? Schroeder: Ummm it’s kind of hard to answer that question because I don’t want to give anything away. I don’t want to give her away because she is someone to watch. Part of the greatness of the character is her mystery. TotallyRandie: Well, will we hate or love her? Schroeder: [Laughs] How could you not love Carrie! You’re going to love her because I’m playing her. No, seriously it depends on what side of the coin you are on but no she’s quite different. I’m not trying to give it away but yes lol. TotallyRandie: How is this film different from anything else you’ve seen in Hollywood? Schroeder: Um I mean I’ve always been a huge fan of twists and turns in movies. This film has you guessing from beginning to end. It has you really on your toes and has you just trying to figure it out. “Dear Frank” the movie is set to come out on November 10th, 2019.

(GLVC). They have a 4-1 record for the season and are only surrendering 20.6 points a game to opposing teams.
Football is back! “I think it’s great when you can have the actual homecoming game on the campus,” said Dyan Webber, who is an alumnus of TSU.
T
here will be an old familiar sound on Saturday, October 12th to the students, fans, faculty, and alumni off of 3100 Cleburne Street in Houston, Texas. After playing all their home games since 2012, at BBVA stadium which is home of the MLS Houston Dynamo, the Tigers fans can finally stand on their own campus and scream out this phrase they have been holding in for a while.
It has been eleven long years since the Texas Southern University Tigers football team has played on their home campus. The last game played in 2008 was against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent, Mississippi Valley State. TSU will face the Missouri S&T Miners at Alexander Durley Stadium at 2 pm CST. “The students asked Dr. Lane (President of TSU) and myself and they actually passed a resolution to enhance Durley stadium,” said Athletic Director and former NCAA Division 1 scoring leader for TSU men’s basketball team, Kevin Granger. “They wanted
the games to be back on campus and everywhere we went everyone wanted us to return games to the campus, so we started putting the ball in motion and we got it done.” The Tigers have gotten off to sort of a rough start this year under new head coach Clarence McKinney. They are currently 0-5 for the season, but they have been consistent on the offensive end in most of the games they have played in this year including a 35 -28 loss in overtime to Alabama A&M University last week. It will take some time before all the pieces fall into place for McKinney’s unit as they have a lot of young players who will be returning for years to come. TSU will be facing a tough opponent in the Miners who are in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference
Fans will not care about stats or records come Saturday, as they will finally be able to leave the tailgate area and go straight to the stadium. As I drove through the Third Ward area of Houston this week you could already feel the buzz and excitement from the community to have football back at home where it belongs. “This is huge for the community,” said Dr. Kenyatta Cavil, who is a professor at Texas Southern and host of Inside the HBCU Sportslab. “It will bring that HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) feeling to the students who never had a chance to experience it.” TSU AD K. Granger echoed those sentiments when responding to how excited he was to help bring football back to his home campus. “I went to Texas Southern, so to be an intricate part of it is very exciting,” said Granger.

Harris Health System Receives ‘Most Wired’ Award, Eighth in Nine Years By StyleMagazine.com Newswire

arris Health System has received a Most Wired award from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), the eighth such designation in the past nine years. Most Wired is a benchmarking of healthcare institutions and their adoption and implementation of technology to improve patient safety and outcomes.
mation technology. The program does this by conducting an annual survey to identify, recognize, and certify the adoption, implementation and use of information technology by healthcare provider organizations. The results are intended to improve patient safety and outcomes by driving change in the healthcare IT industry.
Harris Health achieved a Level 7 designation in this year’s rankings. It signifies that the system has made significant technology upgrades to its platform evident by its use of technology in infrastructure, business continuity/ disaster recovery, population health, clinical quality and safety, financial programs and identity-access management to grant access to key systems.
This year, CHIME adopted a Level 1-10 classification to better benchmark participating organizations based on their adoption and outcomes achieved through their use of technology.
“This award is the result of a tremendous amount of collaboration between the various disciplines within our organization,” says David Webb, interim senior vice president and chief information officer, Harris Health System. “Working as one Harris Health team, we implemented and operationalized new

“These certification levels will help ensure that the Most Wired program continues to be a catalyst for technology adoption that improves patient outcomes and engagement. Every participating organization will be certified at a level that represents their respective achievements,” the site says. “Harris Health has a robust patient portal that enhances the patient engagement experience,” Webb says. “By utilizing the portal, patients can take more ownership of their healthcare

experience.” To achieve a Level 7-8, organizations must meet the criteria for being designated as Most Wired. These organizations have deployed technologies and strategies (e.g., population health/ cost-of-care analytics, HIEs/integration engines, and patient portals) to help them analyze their data and are starting to achieve meaningful clinical and efficiency outcomes. Some of these organizations are experimenting with more advanced technologies, like telehealth, that expand access to care. Harris Health is one of 15 hospitals in Texas certified at Level 7-10 and one of five other healthcare systems recognized from greater Houston. The annual survey recognizes hospitals and healthcare systems for their leveraging of information technology to improve performance for value-based healthcare in areas of infrastructure, business and administrative management; quality and safety; and clinical integration.

federate Army, many white men took a slave or two with them to serve as “camp slaves” to polish arms, press uniforms, cook, and carry messages. Some slaves charged their “master’s” comrades for work, which allowed them money to buy their own Confederate uniforms, if they so desired.
H
istory is a big subject.
And yet, each era has inside it a thousand little clues for people, places, and everyday life: clothes folks might’ve worn, toys children played with, maybe, or foods they enjoyed. Those are the things that make history fascinating, even powerful. But add in a bit of quarrel and, as in the new book “Searching for Black Confederates” by Kevin M. Levin, they might make history wrong. Ever since the last shot was fired in the Civil War, there’s been controversy, including argument over the site of that last shot. For more than a century-anda-half, stories were told and mythology endures – one of them being the possi-
Kevin Levin
bility that slaves fought on the side of the Confederacy. “Over the past… decades,” says Levin, “claims…of anywhere between 500 and 100,000 black Confederate soldiers… have become increasingly common.” But, he says, those claims are highly inflated. In truth, “a small handful of black men” were recruited “just days before the fall of the Confederacy…” Also true: photographs taken during the War show black men dressed in gray uniforms. Those pictures cause a misunderstanding, Levin says, that leads back to one of the reasons the War was fought in the first place.
During battle, camp slaves were sometimes tasked with guarding provisions and horses on the outskirts of a conflict but “at no point… was it ever revealed that black men were… serving in the Confederate army as soldiers.” The idea was suggested and discussed but most slave owners “did not believe that slaves or free blacks could make good soldiers.” Even trying, Levin says, would have elevated slaves to the level of their “masters,” a thought that was totally unacceptable… So is the discussion settled? Probably
not, but “Searching for Black Confederates” surely makes good arguments on the side of dismissal. Beginning with a novel written in 1860 – one that he picks apart methodically – author Kevin M. Levin suggests that the idea of slaves basically fighting to keep themselves enslaved is preposterous. To support this, he cites various sources to explain photographs that have come to be misunderstood and how end-of-war expectations and Jim Crow laws affected life for black men in the post-War years. These sources underscore his original claims that black men were not enlisted to fight for the “Lost Cause.” It’s fascinating information, if not just a bit repetitive. And yet, because there’s nobody to interview and nobody to question, certain historians and readers who embrace black forebears in gray might still dispute the disputer.
