The 2020 Census, Stand Up and Be Counted By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
A
new report should raise alarms about the upcoming 2020 census. According to the Pew Research Center, the good news is that the overwhelming majority of Americans are aware of the census, and over eight in 10 say they are likely to participate. The bad news is that nearly one in four blacks, young people, and lower income people and one in five Hispanics are uncertain or reluctant to participate. If not changed, that could have truly negative impact on the most vulnerable. The census is a big deal. The Constitution of the United States mandates a count of every American every 10 years. That count is used to allocate seats in the Congress, to inform redistricting of political boundaries and to guide the distribution of literally hundreds of billions of federal funds. If Hispanics or Blacks are hesitant to participate, the undercount will impact how well represented they are, and how much federal money their neighborhoods get. In these polarized times, the census is in danger of being turned into a political football. The Trump administration sought to place a question about citizenship on the census, clearly designed to intimidate immigrants from participating. That was blocked by the Supreme Court, but the controversy around it may well impact the willingness of immigrants generally, and Hispanics in particularly to participate.

ensure that help is not there. That increasingly leaves publicizing the census and providing assistance to complete the process to the states. Some states like California and New York take this seriously. Others -- like Texas and Florida -- do not. Southern states, mired in the habit of not wanting African Americans to count, often do little as well. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, just 20 states have appropriated funds to coordinate, advertise and partner with local groups on the census.
The Census Bureau classifies low income people as “hard to count.” The census is mailed to households in March. The homeless, however, have no mailbox. Low income people change addresses and jobs more often and are often forced into temporary housing with friends or relatives. Too often the people most in need of federal assistance are the very people who are not counted in the census that determines the allocation of fun ds. The Trump administration has consistently sought to cut the budget for the Census Bureau. The 2020 census will be the first that is done largely online -- but many Americans, particularly older ones, aren’t as familiar with online responses. They will need extra help, and Trump seems to be doing what he can to
Citizen groups have scrambled to address the problem. The Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Hispanic Caucus have created projects, partnering with local groups and national organizations to spread the word about the census and to set up volunteer efforts. A fight over funding for the census is likely to occur in the

President and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the President, without due process or fairness or any legal rights. All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here - a lynching. But we will WIN!” the President tweeted. Again, an undercount can have major effects. In Texas, which has no state committee, 40 percent of the population is Hispanic, many are no doubt terrified by the fervid debate over immigration. Texas could gain as many as three seats in the Congress -- if its population is counted. In fiscal year 2016, Texas received over $59 billion in federal funds derived from census data. An analysis by Andrew Reamber, professor at The George Washington University, estimates that an undercount of merely 1 percent would cost the state nearly $300 million in federal funds.

It should not have to be this way. The census is in the Constitution because the Founders understood how important it was to know the size of the population. Everyone should agree that an accurate count is vital. Congress should step up to ensure the Census Bureau has adequate funding. The states should gear up so that their most vulnerable are counted and gain a fair share of federal support. Volunteer organizations should mobilize to help register those hardest to count. Time is short: the census is mailed to households in March. The time to act is now. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. the term “lynching,” which is associated with a period of horrific racial violence in the United States, in regard to the inquiry. Following Emancipation and the Civil War, killings, often carried out in public settings, known as lynchings, terrorized newly freed black Americans. Thousands of citizens were killed this way. Trump’s use of the term is also notable as he has frequently stoked racial tensions while in office, from referring to undocumented immigrants as an “infestation” tosharply criticizing African-American athletes who protest during the National Anthem. White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley argued Tuesday that Trump’s use of the word “lynching” to describe the impeachment process was fair. Speaking to reporters, Gidley said Trump “is not comparing what happened to him with one of our darkest moments in American history. What he’s explaining, clearly, is the way he’s been treated by the media since he announced for President.” He also claimed Trump was referring to the way Democrats were treating him, saying that the President is “receiving zero due process from Democrats on the Hill. That’s what he’s talking about.” Impeachment is a political process and the President, through the White House counsel,

upcoming budget battle. If -- as seems increasingly likely -- there is no new budget, but merely an agreement to keep operating at current levels, the Census Bureau will face doing a census with inadequate funds.
has opted not to cooperate and to instead block congressional requests. The impeachment inquiry, which began four weeks ago, is moving rapidly, with ongoing witness testimony conducted on Capitol Hill and bombshell revelations opening up new avenues for investigation since the whistleblower’s report about Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky came under scrutiny. On Tuesday, the United States’ top diplomat in Ukraine, acting Ambassador Bill Taylor, testifies behind closed doors. Though Democrats had hoped to hold a vote on impeachment before the Thanksgiving holiday, there is growing expectation that the votes could slip closer to the end of the year. Trump has lashed out against the investigation, questioning whether the whistleblower needs protection and slamming congressional Democrats. Trump previously retweeted a statement during the 2016 election referring to his treatment by journalists as a “disgusting lynching” in September 2015. CLARIFICATION: This story has been updated to reflect that Sen. Graham said the treatment of Trump is a lynching in “every” sense. CNN’s Manu Raju and Lauren Fox contributed to this report.

Holding Players More Accountable for Their Actions By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
M
anny Ramirez, Jose’ Canseco, Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, and Bobby Cox are some of the many professional athletes in baseball that have been charged with domestic violence at least once. Despite the charge, some of them continued to have careers in the game after paying penalties. Also on that list is the newly acquired Houston Astros pitcher Roberto Osuna, who was charged for a May 8, 2018, assault against the mother of his three-year-old son, Alejandra Roman Cota. Like the others listed, Osuna was charged, took a deal, and continues to play ball. While other athletes, like Collin Kaepernick, get blackballed completely for simply exercising their rights that all Americans have. What do these actions say about the stance that professional sports organizations have about domestic violence? Osuna’s deal included a $500 fine, 75 game suspension, continued counseling, and a one-year peace agreement to stay away from Cota. The couple will continue to co-parent their son. And Osuna still gets to play ball because although he took this
deal, he says it is not an admission of guilt. In fact, Osuna was almost like rewarded when he was traded to the Houston Astros since no other team wanted him and his baggage. However, the Astros gave off the impression that his domestic violence past didn’t matter as long as he produced winning results for the ball club. The Astros made an attempt to show sensitivity towards the topic of domestic violence by donating large sums of money to various nonprofits that support domestic violence. Great way to get involved in the community but it doesn’t erase the thoughts the public opinion has about the team in regards to domestic violence. In recent days with all the attention on the World Series 2019 Champion hopefuls Astros, a new light was cast on the team when the Astros GM Brandon Taubman said some controversial remarks in the direction of a group of female reporters who clearly were domestic violence advocates. Taubman’s remarks were in support of Osuna but were not warranted, as Osuna has not been the major producer of success for the Astros since being signed so why in the world was he getting praise from Taubman? And that’s the million dollar question. In an official statement, Taubman said he was embarrassed by his remarks and he was sorry. “ I realize that my comments were unprofessional and inappropriate,” commented Taubman. Followed by Astros
owner Jim Crane’s comments, “The Astros continue to be committed to using our voice to create awareness and support on the issue of domestic violence.” The ball club has donated over $300K to various domestic violence agencies. That’s all good but more needs to be done towards the players who are abusers. Why have a league domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy that gives violators a slap on the wrist? Domestic violence is a crime and violators should be treated like those who commit crimes instead of these light sentences where they are allowed
tinue in their violent ways and shedding a bad light on the organizations they represent. Now instead of basking in the glory of the World Series, the Astros have to balance their positive publicity with the negative light of domestic violence. While you have this national platform, Astros do something big to shine a light on domestic violence and really be the all-stars all Houstonians know that you are. In the same light, professional athletic organizations need to do the same to hold athletes more accountable for their actions.

HEALTH
5 Things You Can Do Right Now to Improve Your Nutrition By Lauren Powell, MD/BlackDoctor.Org
I promise your body will thank you. 2. Drink Water
Dr. Lauren Powell
Making lifestyle changes isn’t always the easiest, especially when it comes to eating habits. To make this change a bit easier for you, we’ve listed 5 simple steps you can take today to get the ball rolling! 1. Eat More Plants The data is strong: the more plants you eat, the lower your risk of disease. If you’re a meat lover, I’m not suggesting
that you become a vegetarian tomorrow. Instead, I am suggesting that you choose dishes that you love and add more vegetables to them. Last week I made spaghetti with mushrooms, spinach, carrots, and onions! It was so filling and hearty that no one noticed there wasn’t any meat in the dish. Challenge yourself with one meal a day or one day a week to go without meat, and instead add more vegetables.
Simple right? Water should be your primary beverage. Say no to soda, juices, and sweet tea. If you want to have juice, make it yourself. Oranges are great for you, but orange juice purchased from your grocery store is full of added sugar; that’s why it tastes so different compared to an orange. Don’t waste your calories on sugary beverages; instead, drink water equivalent to half your weight in ounces. I used to end my evenings with a glass of wine (okay, maybe two glasses), and I felt like those calories were catching up with me. So now I have sparkling flavored water in the evenings. Wine is reserved for date nights with my husband. 3. Avoid Processed Foods I know, I know, but it’s just so convenient. The problem with processed food is all the things that are added to it.
APRENDE MÁS. HAZ MÁS. COMPARTE MÁS.
4. Cook More For some, this is a huge challenge. But I want to let you off the hook. Don’t
think you have to make this glamorous three-course meal. Cooking takes practice so if you burn a few things, it’s okay. I promise you’ll burn less with practice. If cooking an entire meal is overwhelming, start by just cooking sides and purchasing a rotisserie chicken from your local grocery store. A partly-cooked meal is better than an entirely bought meal. 5. Meal Prep I make my worst nutritional decisions when I’m hungry, limited on time, and have to make a quick decision. And every single time, I regret that decision two hours later. Preparing for your week is crucial. Planning your meals, if that includes planning your carryout lunch, is crucial. Pack snacks, prepare your lunch ahead of time and plan your dinner. I divide my week in half since preparing for an entire week in one day is a bit overwhelming. On Sundays, I prep and plan the meals for Monday through Wednesday, and then on Wednesdays I plan for the remainder of the week.

RBI-Real Big Innings Explosive innings by the Nationals Astros in a 0-2 hole headed into Game 3 of the 2019 World Series By Brian Barefield, Style Sports Editor
F
or the second night in a row, the Houston Astros failed to get any RBI’s (Runs Batted In) while giving up RBI’s (Real Big Innings). The Washington Nationals defeated the Houston Astros, 12-3 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the 2019 World Series. Only three teams have ever gone down 0-2 at home to come back and win the World Series: 1985 Kansas City Royals, 1986 New York Mets, and the 1996 New York Yankees.
the boys never gave up.”
“The Nationals have outplayed us,” said Astros manager AJ Hinch after Game 2. “Bottom line is they came into our building and played two really good games. Game 3 becomes critical for us and we are going to give them a fight for it.”
as the Astros were coming right back with another strong arm in Justin Verlander.
It was a three run fifth inning in Game 1 that caused trouble for Houston’s ace, Gerrit Cole. That was a very unusual site for Astros fans who had not seen him lose a game since May 22nd. Houston would end up losing the game 5-4 to go down 1-0, but there was still no need to panic
The Astros had not lost back-to-back games at home since July 1st to the Oakland A’s and won over 61 games during the regular season. That all changed on Tuesday night as the Astros other ace (Verlander) went to the mound to face the 2019 National League Pennant winners
and once again the Nationals bats got hot in the top of the seventh inning for six runs and now has Houston searching for answers.
That can be attributed to a strong Washington pitching staff that has started Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. Those two pitchers have shut down their opponents during this 2019 postseason run. Scherzer has 134 career postseason strikeouts and Strasburg has a 1.93 ERA in his five postseason starts.
“I believe in hard work and being consistent in what we do,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez when asked about his team’s chances of even being in the postseason back in May. “We are here because
What the Astros can’t afford is to have another 2005 World Series happen to them. Houston was swept by the Chicago White Sox after going down 0-2 in the series.
Houston was the best team in Major League Baseball this year with a franchise record of 107 wins. But that could be all for nothing if the Astros don’t learn how to bring in runners in scoring position. In two games of this Fall Classic, Houston has left 20 batters on base and has failed to produce the runs needed to give Cole and Verlander any support.

On the Go For most people, a busy day is just part of the program. Even if you take your hectic lifestyle in stride, chances are it affects your eating habits to some extent. Fortunately, you’re not alone and conveniently packaged foods can make eating on the go tasty and enjoyable. The options are even crossing into areas traditionally reserved for a sit-down meal, such as Aunt Jemima’s Pancake on the Go Cups, which offer a soft and fluffy texture like the typical pancake in Chocolate Chip or Buttermilk & Maple flavors. They’re surprisingly simple to prepare; just add water, stir and microwave for a pancake in a cup that you can enjoy from anywhere. Learn more at auntjemima.com. else; ugly produce is actually in vogue. A growing number of chefs and brands are promoting recipes made with ugly foods – usually produce that is perfectly useful and edible but likely to be overlooked at the store due to a physical imperfection. Think oddly shaped tomatoes or a smaller melon than you might not normally choose. Often those options are offered at a discount and it’s a savvy way to reduce food waste. Hot and Spicy Palettes are growing ever-adventurous, and that means flavors that pack a strong punch are gaining traction. If you’re not sure your taste buds are up to the challenge, try adding some spice to a familiar dish like rice or pasta. For example, you can find a spicy take on Rice a Roni, Pasta Roni and Quaker Instant Grits with Jalapeno Cheddar varieties, which include cheddar cheese and real jalapeno bits that leave lingering heat. Include these as the perfect side for your next taco night or try in place of mashed potatoes for an extra kick. Find more spicy ideas for dinner at ricearoni.com. place of meat no longer means forgoing those flavors and textures. While not a completely new trend, plant-based and blended burgers and sliders have become more mainstream and found places on menus at restaurants nationwide with more people (even non-vegans) searching for a break from meat or ways to add flavors like mushrooms into meals and snacks. Salty-Sweet Flavors Sweet-meets-salty combos are hardly new, but products featuring this blend are showing up in more and more places, including at the breakfast table. Sea salt is a perfect match for the sweetness of chocolate or caramel; it adds a rich depth of flavor that strikes a balance between too sweet or too salty. Start the day off with an option like Quaker’s Cocoa & Sea Salt Instant Oatmeal, which contains 100% whole grains, no high-fructose corn syrup, no artificial preservatives, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial flavors and no added colors.
