COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

ope Francis has departed, but his words and his presence linger. He had an electric effect on those who saw him or heard his words. He served the highest purpose of faith by offering us its wisdom and its forgiveness. He invoked fundamental values, and applied them to the world. He reminded us that we were a nation of immigrants, and that we should treat them as we would wish to be treated. On climate, he summoned us to action to preserve a vibrant world for our children and our children’s children. On poverty, he reminded us that the Bible measures our character by how we treat “the least of these.” On conflict, he urged negotiation and compromise. He spoke to the most powerful officials

POLITICAL

Pope Francis Calls America to Faith and Action of the Republic, and also to the most vulnerable, the imprisoned and the disabled. His presence and voice provided people genuine hope. He awakened our better angels and called us to service. What do we make of this remarkable moment? Pope Francis has touched our emotions. Will begin to change our attitudes, and if so, then our behavior? If we change our behavior, we will have to change our priorities. And those change only if the new behavior is enacted into law and reflected in our budgets. The pope spoke from the longstanding teachings of the church. Yet he had no doubt that our values and our morals should be reflected in our policies and our laws -- that we are responsible not only for our private morality but as citizens and legislators for our public policies as well. So he called on legislators to remember their noble mission: “Your own responsibility as members of Congress is to enable this country, by your legislative activity, to grow as a nation. ...You are called to defend and preserve the dignity of your fellow citizens in the tireless ... pursuit of the

common good. ... Legislative activity is always based on care for the people.” In the scabrous, partisan politics of Washington, the reminder was long overdue. Pope Francis then called on legislators to summon the courage to act on global warming, to provide opportunity to the vulnerable, to settle disputes and end the arms trade. He called on them to defend life, focusing on ending the death penalty. In New York, he urged the diplomats at the United Nations to build international law and treaties, to pursue cooperation and negotiation, and to act to lift up the impoverished across the world. In his speech to Congress, he invoked the example of four great American leaders: a president -Abraham Lincoln -- who led the nation to remove the scourge of slavery, and called on us to forgive and to come together. A minister -- the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- who held no office but led the movement to end segregation, to spread the right to vote and to call for action on poverty. Thomas Merton, the most influential American Catholic author of the 20th century, who supported the movements for peace and civil rights and reached out across cultures to find common ground and uncommon wisdom. Each of these, as Pope Francis said, had a dream. And each devoted himself or herself not only to service and charity but also to action challenging unjust laws and wars, and pushing for peace and justice. They were grounded in faith and sought change in the political arena. I had the privilege of meeting with Pope Francis in Philadelphia. I gave him an anthology of Dr. King’s writings. I was struck by how he called us to action. If we feel differently and see things differently, then we must act differently. And we should work to insure that our values are reflected in our priorities and our budgets. You can write to the Rev. lyde Leuchtag, a long-time Assistant Harris County Attorney and revered public servant celebrated his new role as presiding judge over the Harris County Court at Law #1 with county commissioners and former judges, city council members and family and friends on Monday. He is Harris County’s lone African American civil county court judge. “I am honored to be appointed Judge of County Civil Court at Law #1. My promise is to be fair and strong in how I honorably administer justice in this court so able held by Judge Debra Ibarra Mayfield and those before her who left big shoes to fill. This court works to seek justice for folks from every ethnicity and area of life and geography in this county that feel they have been done wrong by property owners or tenants, in contract disputes, debt collection, tow hearings, eminent domain and slander or defamation of character. I’m hitting the ground running to ensure our court operates smooth and efficiently with patience, compassion and respect in hearing all sides in every issue,” said Judge Leuchtagat a fundraiser at Carrabbas restaurant. “This is the appeals court for disputes between land lords and tenants in eviction cases. I’m proud of work we’ve done with working with veterans, families and those

that may have made bad decisions to come to work with community and county, state and federal relief and with home and business owners to prevent homelessness and ensure compensation for those that own property and are due what is owed to them. We are all called to answer to a higher being which does and should humble us all,” said Judge Leuchtag who is proud of his heritage that includes his African American father and grandparents of Jewish Eastern European ancestry that were imprisoned in concentration camps. The low key, polite and quiet judge grew up in New York, Indiana, and Texas. The young jurist has roots in Galveston where he graduated from Ball

Most important to he and his wife Cindy are his volunteerism as a leader in youth football and at his church in Third Ward, where he and Cindy make their home and their eight children. He is highly committed to his faith, family, community and county. His focus is to look forward to Harris County’s future as a beacon for objectivity, fairness and meritocracy. Introducing him to the audience was County Commissioner Steve Radack who praised Judge Leuchtag for a reputation for reverence to the law and earned him his unanimous appointment from Radack and his fellow commissioners. He pleaded with those there to help in his upcoming election. Houston City Council Member Michael thanked Judge Leuchtag for his integrity as a public servant. “While strong in his beliefs, Leuchtag has a reputation at the county for being fair and respectful to everyone and getting people who normally disagree to come together on things they have in common,” said Kubosh, Council Member At-Large Position 3. Judge Leuchtag will run in the March 1, 2016 primary. The general election is November 8, 2016. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com. .

Thalía Sodi Launches Exclusively at Macy’s

Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

W

hat does the American dream look like to you? It can be defined and envision in an unlimited number of ways and ideas. Internationally recognized singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, and designer Thalía’s dream had many layers some of which included acting and singing. Already one of the most influential Mexican Americans, the Queen of Latin Pop has now realized another layer of her dream, the launching of her clothing line at Macy’s. “It (launching her clothing line) is not something that Thalía’ did. It is something that Latina did in a very American store like Macys. So it is like an American dream and to me that is very powerful for all of us as a culture,” said Thalía’ is a recent interview with Houston Style Magazine. We caught up with Latin star at the official launch of her collection, Thalía’ Sodi, at Macy’s Memorial City. The new collection that hit Macy’s stores in September is full of jewelry, apparel and shoes in colors, prints, and fabrics as vibrant and bold as Thalía’ herself. Everything in the collection is beautiful so much so that Thalía’ can’t pick a favorite piece. She loves them all! “All of the pieces - the jewelry, the shoes, the skirts - everything I love! But I have to say the prints are what make it different; the colors, the textures, the fabrics and, of course, the fit is super important to me,” expressed Thalía’, who also added that she wants the woman that wears Thalía’ Sodi to feel comfortable and glamorous while in her clothes. Macy’s invites buyers to create a look while shopping the Thalía’Sodi line that is sold exclusively at Macy’s as all pieces compliment each other well. Fierce reds, electric blues and passionate purples are big in Thalía’ line. Describing the creation of the line like being at a playground, Thalia sees her involvement in brining the line to fruition as a great creative outlet. “Everything is like a playground for me. Like creating jewelry and creating prints and colors and shoes, I think it is fun,” a joyful Thalía’ said. “Everything that allows me to feel creative is good like when I write music, when I sing and act creating a character. It is good. It is another act of creativity so I like it.” Something else high on Thalía’s like list is meet and greeting her fans. In fact, it’s a priority. It excites the songstress to be able to be face-to-face Thalia Sodi

with the people that help to put her where she is today. “This is what excites me more about this event,” said Thalía’. “Everyday I wake up and connect with them on social media. That’s my extension and so that is my priority.” She also noted that her top priority were her children Sabrina and Matthew and husband Tommy. Thalía’ continues making her mark in different endeavors as she inspires so many, especially from the Latin community. She has a message for all the young girls looking at her with stars in their eyes. “Don’t ever believe what everybody says about your dreams. If you have something in your heart, go for it.” Thalía’ continues, “Learn whatever about that thing. Whatever you are like obese with, whatever you want to create, learn from A-to-Z about that whole thing and fight for it. Find a way to make it real because we are here in this world to do that.” We are also here to shop at Macy’s. Check out Thalía’’s collection, Thalía’ Sodi, sold exclusively at Macy’s today. Bill King: The Quintessential Houstonian

Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

W

ith roots firmly established in the Houston area Houston mayoral candidate Bill King considers himself the quintessential Houstonian. Growing up in northern Galveston, He is the son of a working class family with strong values and ideals. Receiving higher education at the University of Houston, he puts in work as both a businessman and lawyer. And he wants to work as the next mayor of Houston. Houston is America’s city of opportunity according King. “If you have something to contribute, there is a place for you,” he said in a recent interview with Houston Style Magazine. “We have this big, open welcoming heart. We take in people from all over the world and from the rest of the country.” He added to that point by reflecting on the words of former Houston mayor Bob Lanier, King quoted, “ In Houston, nobody cares who your daddy is.” And it is for reasons like that King loves Houston and wants to represent the city as its chief officer. One might think with King’s experience as the former mayor of Kemah it would fully prepare him for the job as mayor of Houston. In King’s eyes that is pretty much like apples and oranges. The experience in Kemah will help but what really will be beneficial if elected, as Houston’s next leader is his experience as a businessman. “I think I bring a fresh more business like approach to City Hall. It would address some of the problems we are facing down there,” said King as

Bill King

to why he stands out among his competitors. “ I think they are brining the same broken solutions that they have been trying for decades and they don’t work.” King is a man that loves to accomplish goals. It is what makes him happiest. And he has goals for Houston, one being to ensure a happy and safe well being for all Houstonian. Within the first 30 days if elected, King has the goals of enforcing the no cell phone in school zone law that was passed a while ago by actually putting up the signs with the law on them. “One thing that I’ve just recently discovered is that we

have not put up the signs to enforce the no cell phone use in school zones.” He continued, “ The city says they don’t have the money to put up the signs and it would have been like one-one-hundredths of one percent of what they have spent in the last six years. And they couldn’t find the money in any place to put up the signs to protect our kids? So I say in the first 30 days, I’ll make sure those signs go up and we start enforcing the law.” Another potential law King has problems with is the HERO ordinance. He can’t say whether he is for or against the ordinance but he does see a lot of problems with it. The part of the law that outlaws sex segregated facilities bothers him since he thinks we as a society are not ready to abandon that practice because it is the norm of the day to segregate bathrooms. Secondly, the definition of discrimination that says if you give a benefit to any protected class it is illegal troubles him. Under that clause alone some of Houston’s own laws would be in violation according to King. “It was thrown together in a hurried fashion. It was obviously a personal political agenda and it’s just got some serious problems with it.” Fixing the problems of Houston with a business mindset is what King brings to the table. He needs your vote to bring his real solutions for the city’s real problems. Will you stand with Bill King on November 3rd? Exercise your right to vote. Let your voice be heard. Contrary to general market daily newspapers, African American and Hispanic newspapers are on the rise and thriving and, for the last 100 years, have been the trusted voice of their respective communities. The task force will be in charge of increasing awareness and advertising for member newspapers and will be meeting with major auto, financial and political advertisers in the coming months. “With close to 97 million African Americans and Hispanics in the U.S. today, representing 33% of the total population, this consumer segment demands attention,” said Martha Montoya, VP of the NAHP. “The buying power of the African American and Hispanic communities, currently at over $2.3 trillion combined, continues to outpace the national average.” “This historic media alliance is a gigantic step for our two organizations,” said Dr. Benjamin Chavis, President and CEO of the NNPA. “We believe our working together has tremendous potential mutual benefits in today’s marketplace.” “This task force also marks a historic partnership between the NNPA and NAHP, the nation’s most influential publishing organizations that are currently led by women. BOOK REVIEW

T By Terri

Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

here once was a girl who had a little curl… Did you envy that nursery rhyme character? Or, like many women, have you had a love-hate relationship with your hair since you were old enough to hear nursery rhymes like that? Either way, you’re not alone, as you’ll see in “Me, My Hair, and I,” a collection of hair-raising essays edited by Elizabeth Benedict. Is today a good hair day, a bad hair day – or a no-hair day? The bigger question: who’s happy with her hair? In this book, twenty-seven women answer that, as they weigh in on their tresses (or lack thereof). “For women,” says Benedict, “hair is an entire library of information...” “It’s always there, unless it’s gone or it’s hidden – and those absences tell stories too.” Your story may start with your mother, the first decision-maker when it came to your hair. She might have snipped a few strands as a keepsake once; she may’ve forced you into a “pixie” you didn’t want, a curtain of hair you hated, a shaved head that culture demanded by your first birthday, or braids done expertly. Her choices then may still influence your ‘do today. Hair can be “good” or it can be “bad” and getting the former, for African American girls, often meant time spent in the family kitchen that “would double

as a torture chamber…” Heated devices burned necks and scalps and rain undid everything in an instant. Getting one’s hair straightened was “controversial,” but “Whatever Black women do to their hair is controversial.” Other cultures, other controversies. Which brings up some good points: when it comes to our hair, everybody has an opinion on it – and most of them can’t help sharing. Also: we may envy someone else’s hair, while she envies our straight-wavy-bouncy-curlysleek tresses of another color-texturethickness. We’re never happy with that which is on our heads – or anywhere on our bodies, for that matter. So perhaps the thing to do is to embrace two facts: for women, there is no such thing as a “neutral” hairstyle. There’s just not. And, hey, whatever we do with it, we get second chances: it’ll always grow back. Pick up “Me, My Hair, and I” and there’s one thing you’ll notice: as you comb through it, just about every one of these twenty-seven essays resonates. It’s easy, for instance, to identify with the women who long for a new hairstyle to go with a new life. Readers will know exactly what one essayist means when she says hair is love. We sympathize with descriptions of hair as it circles the drain, post-chemo; with

memories of childhood pulls and tugs; with the waffling decisions to dye or not; and with the shake-our-heads comments that our hair draws. Editor Elizabeth Benedict chose these essays wisely to reflect our tangled thoughts about hair, and I think you’ll agree once you open its pages. If you’ve ever cursed your curls, fought your ‘fro, or loved your locks, “Me, My Hair, and I” will surely grow on you. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

The Wrong Diet Advice Can Cost You Pounds

o you find yourself standing on the scale every week and frustrated because you still can’t ditch that unwanted weight? Are you eating like a rabbit and binging on foods with nothing but pounds of regret after? Maybe you need to check your sources and decided if your following outdated advice with unproven sources. Let’s take a look at what’s current in the world of fat loss and remove top 5 diet advice failures. #1 Counting Calories While knowing what your calorie intake is can be important, it is estimated that the food industry has about a 75% error rate that is allowed on most published numbers. SAD, but true. Many of the current food apps have been developed but the information is only as good as the last users information. When you’re trying to loose weight, diet qual-

#2 Skipping Meals No matter what you may think about “eating less” + “less calories“ =”loose more”, is a failing formula. You have heard this a million times but eating smaller frequent meals speeds up your metabolism, decreased insulin drops that cause sugar cravings, and helps control over all appetite. In most cases people tend to over eat at one meal and because they have a full feeling, never eat the rest of the day. You’re constantly in the battle of will power over what you need vs. want your body wants. Start with 3 simple whole meals per day pre planned and over a period of 30 days increase gradually to 3 meals and two snacks. The key factor here is to PLAN your meals and prepare them in advance to avoid, fast food stops, skipping meals and under or over eating.

unsatisfying. While people who are body builders tend to preserver through this kind of eating for competitions prep, the average man or woman trying to loose weight is asking for diet failure on this type of meal plan. Branch out of this trying to look for new cooking blogs, healthy cookbooks, 5-minute meal planners, meal prep services (If you just hate to cook all together) or even taking a healthy cooking class. The more variety you add to your pallet and diet, the more enjoyable each eating experience is and more likely you stick with a meal plan you can love.

#4 Following Social Media While social media provides a wealth of information and in today’s society is the breeding ground of “the perfect body” it can also lead to depression, unhealthy image expectations, tons of erroneous information and let’s not forget all the marketing for the “Magic Bullet” quick fix products. No pun intended, but take everything in with a grain of salt. The best thing you can do is being to educate yourself with reputable PROVEN sources of information. #3 Always Eating The Same Food Educate yourself on food, trainers, food There is nothing complicated options, diets, workouts, metabolism, about understanding boring food. Eating weight loss and even realistic time goals the same thing day in and day out is asT:10.81”and outcomes. While the information mentally challenging as it is physically

highway is a great resource and often a great tool in the diet game, just be sure the information ultimately is right for you and your fitness goals. #5 The “Death” Workout Your know the workout that includes, hours and hours of cardio, sweating in hot plastic suits, hours of lifting weights until injury, starving with no fuel in your body hoping to burn the pounds away. STOP!! You can’t outwork a bad diet and you can’t beat time and consistency with magic bullet quick fix! Weight loss is 80 percent diet, 20 percent exercise and the facts never change. Walking 35 miles to burn 3,500 calories to loose 1 pound just isn’t a good return of investment for subpar results. Keep active daily at the right intensity, consistently with the right clean diet and you will not only see weekly progress, but finally will see the pounds melt away. Whatever it takes, go to sleep earlier, eat more whole foods, get from in front of the TV and stop buying into the quick fixes you will no longer need to kill yourself in the gym only to be defeated with minimal results. three bed lengths. Variety is also offered with the configurations, available in 2WD and 4WD, and engine types, with a V6, V8 or diesel, which is exclusive to the XD model. The Nissan Titan is classed as a light duty but doesn’t perform like one. It has more towing capability than most half-ton pickups. A Titan XD can tow over 12,000 pounds. Nissan Titan is as American as apple pie. It was designed in California, engineered in Michigan, tested in Arizona and assembled in Tennessee.

A

nnually around this time of the year I head to Dallas for the State Fair Auto Show Media Day and I already know going in what I am going to see…trucks, trucks, and more trucks. Trucks rule in the state of Texas and auto manufacturers know that. Showing off everything from the newest innovations to the special editions made just for Texans, automakers hold nothing back when it comes to the truck market in Texas. Our state is truly truck country. Ram Truck Ram Truck invited the media on a ride with country singer Easton Corbin belting out a sort of truck anthem “Let’s Ride” to kick up some dust in two new trucks for 2016. One of them was designed with the outdoor enthusiast in mind. It is a tough truck that just got tougher. Already winning awards for Best in Class Payload, Ground Clearance, and Off Road Ride, the 2016 Ram 1500 Rebel handles all terrain sitting on 33-inch tires with 17inch alloy wheels. With more modern touches and aggressive styling, the Ram Rebel can be powered with the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque.

Toyota Racing Truck

Toyota Truck Toyota wants to take truck lovers to new places with the new Toyota Tacoma. In 2016, it seems the word for Toyota is technology. New innovations include the standard GoPro camera mount, Qi wireless charging, and Crawl Control to help keep your truck going in situations that will leave others stuck in the mud. The quietest in its class, the Toyota Tacoma is based priced at $23,300 and gets 19mpg city and 24mpg hwy. The redesign truck has a larger rear end for towing capacity and lower drag reduction. My favorite part is the lockable cover for the bed that comes as a short bed, standard bed, or long bed.

GMC Sierra Elevation

proudly displayed in their area. Premium features in the iA sedan are dual USB ports, keyless entry, 7-inch touch screen, rear view backup camera, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Fuel economy estimates are 33mpg city and 42mpg highway. A few dollars higher is the sporty iM hatchback. With similar features as the iA, the iM also has heated power folding side mirrors, double wishbone suspension, dual zone climate control, and 17-inch alloy wheels. GMC Truck GMC was all talks about the Sierra 1500 series of trucks with specific interests on the Elevation edition. Sitting on black 20-inch wheels, the Sierra has signature LED lighting, 7-inch IntelliLink Infotainment system, and remote keyless entry. The redesign truck has a bold front and rear fascias. Engineers have made accessing the gearbox on the bed of the truck easier with the power articulating assist step. The step already automatically come in and out when the door opens but now it can also be controlled by your foot with a button that is located on the side of the step. The Sierra comes in three cab configurations and starts at a price of $27,275. It is also equipped with 4g wifi and Apple CarPlay.

Chevrolet Silverado

Chevrolet Truck Think of Chevrolet Trucks and the mind naturally will first think of the Silverado. The truck is so popular Scion IA

Scion Scion is a brand that is after the young driver bringing style and technology for a low price. Two new vehicles under $19,000 were

Chevrolet Colorado

that it sold out for the year. The “new face of strong” gets a bold new front design with a muscular front end. And a new model was introduced, midnight. However, Silverado is not the only truck flying off the Chevrolet assembly line. The Chevrolet Colorado is becoming the fastest selling truck. Named Motor Trend Truck of the Year, the Colorado was also named Best in Class for its towing capability and fuel economy estimates. Premium features include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and rear vision camera. One of my favorite features is that it is has wifi inside the cabin. Three engines are available – 2.5-liter, 3.5-liter V6, and Duramax 2.8-liter turbo diesel. It is a great buy with a starting price of $20,100. Ford Truck Ford boasted as the truck manufacturer that owns work and that’s why their trucks are built Ford tough. During their presentation to the media, they showed a pretty impressive video of how strong the frame of the Ford Super Duty was. The truck that can tow 40,400 pounds was named Best in Class for gross combination weight rating. It produces 440 horsepower and 860 –pound-feet of torque with a 6.7-liter power stroke V8 turbo diesel engine. What blew me away were the seven cameras that are now on the Ford Super Duty. Nowadays trucks will have a rear view camera and maybe a front view camera. But Ford Super Duty has cameras all over the vehicle to give drivers a 360 view around the entire truck so parking and hitching a trailer are a piece of cake. The camera even has a washer on it so the view is never obstructed. That is innovative thinking.

Chrysler Chrysler changed the script of the day to showcase the Chrysler 200. With features like the a heated and leather wrapped steering wheel, voice recognition, heated and cooled seats, backup camera and keyless entry, the midsize sedan combines modern convinces with luxurious desires. Sitting on 17-inch aluminum wheels, the Chrysler 200 produces 295 horsepower with 262 pounds-feet of torque. The sedan averages 19mpg city and 32mpg hwy with the 3.6-liter V6 engine and front wheel drive. If interested in a lower priced model, the 2.4-liter 4-cyclinder engine will be more your speed. In celebration of their 90th anniversary, Chrysler has a special anniversary package available on the Chrysler 200 Limited that ups the luxury feel. Fiat The unique design of the Fiat 500X makes me think of one thing, cuteness overload. It is a real people pleaser with a variety of options for color and customization. The crossover is the first Fiat with all wheel drive. Two engine options of 1.4-liter or 2.4-liter give fuel economy estimates of 28mpg city and 38mpg hwy. It might be small but it has a lot of storage. These are just some of the amazing, innovative vehicles on display at the Texas State Fair. Be sure to make the trip to Dallas, Texas and check out the entire layout of the auto world. The Texas State Fair is open now through October 18, 2015. For more information, visit www.bigtex.com/fun/ autoshow.

Nissan Truck The light duty truck segment gets a shake up with the 2016 Nissan Titan. Coming i n t w o d i ff e r e n t chassis, XD and a smaller base, the Titan comes with Nisan Titan
