n Alabama, 50 years after Selma, voting rights are once more under assault. Even as Alabama finally took down its confederate flags this year, it has raised new obstacles to voting. The Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder to gut the Voting Rights Act, supported by the five conservative justices alone, opened the floodgates to legislation in over 21 states erecting new obstacles to make voting more difficult. These have included limiting the days for early voting, eliminating Sunday voting, requiring various forms of ID, shutting down voting sites and more. Alabama -- the home of Selma and the Bloody Sunday police riot that spurred the passage of the original Voting Rights Act 50 years ago -- is one of the leaders in the new forms of voter suppression. Alabama passed

Voting Restrictions Ushering in New Jim Crow in Alabama a bill requiring for the first time a photo ID for voting, hitting AfricanAmericans, the poor, the young and the old disproportionately. Now Alabama is using a budget squeeze to shut down 31 satellite offices that issue driver’s licenses, the most popular form of voter ID. This new Jim Crow isn’t subtle. Al.com columnist John Archibald reported that eight of the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of nonwhite registered voters saw their driver’s license offices closed. “Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed,” Archibald wrote, “Every one.” First the state demands that you get a photo ID, and then it makes it harder to do so, particularly in areas heavily populated by AfricanAmericans. Not surprisingly, civil rights activists are asking the Justice Department to intervene. Rep. Terri A. Sewell, who represents Selma and is the only Democratic member of the Alabama congressional delegation, called the restrictions “eerily reminiscent of past, discriminatory practices such as poll taxes and literacy tests that restricted the black vote.” State officials claim
that other ways of obtaining photo IDs are available for voters. But this is Alabama, infamous for its segregationist history, for its rejectionist Gov. George Wallace, for bloody Sunday in Selma, for the murder of four little girls in the bombing of the Birmingham church. Under the original Voting Rights Act, Alabama’s measures would have required preclearance from the Justice Department. With the bipartisan leadership of Rep. John Conyers, Sen. Pat Leahy, and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, a bill to resuscitate the Voting Rights Act is now pending in Congress, although it has yet to get a vote. It revives preclearance measures, applying them to states with five violations of federal law to their voting changes over the past 15 years. While the old law applied to nine Southern States and parts of several others, this standard would apply only to Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Yes, Alabama would still be exempt from preclearance, as would other states with an extensive history of voting discrimination such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Arizona and Virginia. The right to vote is fundamental to any Republic. Voting should be facilitated, not obstructed. We should register citizens automatically. Early
voting should be extended and easy. Voting day should be a holiday, so workers have time to cast their votes. American voting rates are scandalously low, largely because we make registration and voting so difficult. It is particularly outrageous that 50 years after Selma, when the country celebrates the courage of the civil rights marchers, we still witness efforts to suppress the vote, skewed to discriminate against minorities. Alabama’s actions demand a Justice Department investigation. And that demand should be met immediately. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.
Mayor Candidates Raise $1.8 Million with Less Than A Month Left
Burt Levine, Political Writer
ith less than a month left to the November 3rd general election the eight candidates for the Houston’s top job that followed the law by reporting their fundraising totals bragged a total take of $1.8 million in the three months since July when public reports were last required. The top fundraiser was former Sheriff Adrian Garcia who collected nearly $585,000 in contributions. From the start of this election year the race has been to get into a December run-off with 27- year State Rep. Sylvester Turner making his third mayor run. Turner reported $527,000 fundraising since the July reports. The more critical figure required to report however is Cash On Hand that is how much money is available for the GOTV (Get Out The Vote) final push to polls. Despite being beaten at debates for jail negligence while he was sheriff, Garcia reported $831,000 Cash on Hand having spent more than $1 million since July while Turner is reporting $507,000 Cash On Hand having spent $1.3 million. Steve Costello, a term limited at large City Council Member and owner of an engineering firm that has done city business, raised $267,000. After having spent $871,000, Costello reported he has $697.00 Cash On Hand.

Ben Hall, City Attorney under Mayor Bob Lanier and one of the region’s most successful trial lawyers, has far reaching support from African American church leaders and conservative GOP leaders committed to defeating HERO (Houston Equal Rights Ordinance) and a message of both social and fiscal conservatism firing up both African American and conservative audiences. Hall touts his own poll that puts him on top of the 13 candidate field and in the run-off with Turner. Chris Bell started his career as a radioman before going to law school, which may be why readily he peppers every debate with jokes that eases everyone into fun laughter. Bell, a former

three term at large Council Member that won one race for Congress and lost the next has lost races for state rep., mayor, state senator and governor and reports less than $500,000 Cash On Hand. Bill King, known as a former Kemah Mayor and Chronicle columnist, is also former partner in the city’s delinquent tax collection law firm and reports less than $500,000 Cash On Hand. The campaign for HERO reports $521,000 Cash On Hand compared $58,000 reported by those that oppose. The campaign for HERO reports it is important to fight against discrimination and to keep Houston among inclusive cities in America. The campaign against hero focuses on the “sexual preference

and gender identity” categories that it claims would cloud separating public restrooms based on gender and put women in fear by allowing men into their private facilities. Ronald Green, City Controller for six years, is term limited and there three vying to take his spot; one of them being Green’s own Chief Deputy Chris Brown, MBA. Brown has $106,165.14 Cash on Hand. Brown’s closest competitor Bill Frazer, a former Houston CPA Society President, has $58,293.31 Cash on Hand. Former Council Member Carroll Robinson reports $1,527.4 Cash On Hand. Wells Fargo Survey: Millennials Most Optimistic About Finances, FutureDuring Get Smart About Credit month, “How America Buys and Borrows” survey charts Americans’ optimism about personal finances and the future
A
mericans feel optimistic about their finances and the future, according to the third “How America Buys and Borrows” survey by Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) and Ipsos. The findings show millennials, ages 18-35, are the most optimistic about their finances and report being most likely to buy a home in the next three years. This optimism is a shift from last year when generations were more united than divided in their outlook. Wells Fargo releases this
survey data as part of its annual support of the American Bankers Association’s Get Smart About Credit campaign. “Wells Fargo has supported Get Smart About Credit for a decade because our vision of helping customers succeed financially means making sure they know where to go for the information and resources they need to take charge of their credit,” said Shelley Freeman, head of Wells Fargo’s Consumer Credit Solutions group. “This latest survey reflects strong optimism on the part of America’s youngest adult consumers and also tells us consumers in general want to learn more about how credit works.” Survey Results – Millennials Most
Optimistic In June 2015, the “How America Buys and Borrows” survey asked nearly 2,000 American adults ages 18 to 65 about their attitudes and perceptions of the current economy, financial situations and understanding of credit. Weighting on age, gender, education, diverse segments and income were applied to the results to achieve a nationally representative population. Data from the 2015 survey shows millennial optimism is strong in several key areas: Twenty-eight percent of millennials rate their current financial situation favorably, compared to 24 percent of the general population. Looking ahead, 66 percent of
millennials feel their personal financial situation will improve, compared to 48 percent of the general population – an 18 percent divide. Millennials are most likely to be in the process of refinancing their mortgage or buying an investment property, vacation home or new home for themselves. Nearly a third of millennials say Shelley Freeman they plan to buy a new home in the next three years, compared to 19 percent of their general population counterparts. A
nother outstanding accomplishment for Poindexter Dental as the City of Houston and the Harris County Historical Commission designated the distinguished practice as the “First Historically Protected Landmark” within the Sunnyside community. It’s a tribute to the late Dr. Zeb F. Poindexter Jr, who became the first African-American to graduate from University of Texas’ School of Dentistry in 1956. Opening his own dental practice and relocating to the Sunnyside area around 1960, he proudly served the community for over fifty years before retiring in 2000. Following his death in 2012, son Zeb F. Poindexter III has carried on the torch; continuing to deliver quality general and cosmetic services while maintaining his father’s motto, “New Techniques, Old Fashioned Care.” The designation recognizes the site as a place with an exceptional dedication to quality in highlighting the historic heritage of the Sunnyside community. The building itself holds its own significance; designed by the late John S. Chase, who became the first African-American student to enroll at the University of TexasSchool of Architecture in 1950 before eventually becoming the first licensed African-American architect in the state of Texas. The building’s most distinctive architectural feature is the roof on the central bay, which features a connected series of seven peaked gables supported by square beams. Now approaching over 60 years in the area, the practice remains an important staple in the community. After serving countless generations of families and individuals, it’s a place that many residents still look fondly on as one patient explained, “This building was here while I was living on Teton Street while attending TSU. My mother was working in Winnsboro making $3 a week and sending me $2 to pay for school.” Poindexter Dental is located at 7703 Cullen Boulevard. Houston Dynamo Celebrates 10th Season

hard to determine who is more excited about this 10th season of soccer the players or the fans. In celebration of the Houston Dynamo 10th anniversary and Hispanic Heritage Month Houston Style Magazine was able to catch up with a few of the club’s star players. Raul Rodriguez knew coming to the Houston Dynamo that the team expected the highest of standards and he was ready to deliver. Before coming to Houston, the defender had the option of going to Europe but he, along with his wife, opted out for Houston to experience a new culture and way of life. Plus he was very impressed with the Houston Dynamo. Now settled in Houston for nearly a year the six foot Barcelona, Spain native is a towering figure on the green when at play. The 28 year old is a great player
Leonel Miranda
professionally until he was 17. After playing for several years in his hometown of Honduran, he has made Houston is home with his wife and daughter. This year has been a good one for the midfielder who has shown great handling on both sides of the ball. Raul Rodriguez, the only English-speaking player of the group, said playing for the Houston Dynamo is a great opportunity for each of them. “It is a moment of joy. It is a good picture for us to move forward and keep growing,” as he noted that the Houston Dynamos are an important club that wins championships. Embracing all Houston has to offer, the teammates are all big fans of one of Houston’s biggest stars Beyonce. She is always on blast before their games to get them pumped up. Get pumped with the Houston Dynamo as they celebrate their tenth season on Sunday, October 18, 2015 when they play the Seattle Sounders. A pregame ceremony honoring former players from the 2006 and 2007 championship teams will happen at 3:30pm. Individual tickets for this match are available starting at $25 per person. ver since the Houston Dynamo team came to Houston in 2005, the city has had a new injection of energy. Considering how youthful the roster of players are on the team and how much energy they exert during any game and one can easily see how dynamo is the perfect name for the club of ball players. When looking at each player their passion for the game can be seen as well as felt with each play that they make. And they have passed that electric energy on to each fan. Their games are some of the craziest, most fun experiences that any one can have in a stadium. This is not a spectator sport as fans are interactive playing along right with each guy feeling their highs and lows and experiencing the twisty turvy range of emotions. This is a hands on, chest bumping, high fiving, on your feet type of game play soccer. It is
Leonel Miranda
that really knows his game. Another newcomer that came this year was Leonel Miranda. Arriving in Houston just one day after his 21st birthday, the move was a major change for a guy that had never left his home of Argentina before. But he likes challenges and coming here was a challenge he gladly accepted. The midfielder is one of the youngest players not just on the Dynamo roster but also in the entire MLS. He really represents the energy of the sport. Playing in 18 games, he has made two goals, an assist, and appeared in the US Open Cup where he made another goal. He is on loan to the Dynamos from the Club Atletico Independiente of Argentina’s Primera Division and I hope he gets to stay because he is a powerhouse. Alex Lopez is sort of the vet among the group that Houston Style Magazine spoke with as he has been bleeding orange since 2013 and has really grown with the team. Following in the steps of his brother, Lopez got into professional soccer by accident. Though he started to play the game at age nine, he didn’t play

BEAUTY
Billion Dollar Brows Now At Palais Royal
By Monica Jones, Special to Style
T
here is no denying that eyebrows have quickly transitioned as the focal point of a beautifully made up face. After all, brows are what draw attention to the eyes. In the early 1990s the barely there over-plucked brows were gracing the covers of fashion and beauty magazines worldwide creating a long lasting trend that has since taken a backseat to the resurgence of thicker and fuller brows. While many still don’t place emphasis on their eyebrows, they are truly one of the most important features that help create the perfect facial symmetry. Full manicured brows
can help frame your face, accentuate your make-up and some may argue that they can help make you look younger. In recent years, healthier and fuller brows sported by fashion models and celebrities like Cara Delevingne, Kim Kardashian, and Beyoncé have become popular. So what’s the secret to achieving the perfect brow? Well, thanks to Palais Royal’s flagship store in the Meyerland area, Houston Style was recently treated to a tutorial by Natalie Plain, co-founder of the exclusive eyebrow cosmetic line, Billion Dollar Brows.
Plain spoke with us about her passion for beautiful brows and how she helped create the world’s only eyebrow cosmetic line for the beauty industry. After a lengthy career as a writer, Natalie began to tap into her true passion by channeling the early memories of her visits to the ritzy Beverly Hills salons as a young girl where she witnessed the ultimate beauty experience. Recognizing a need to help women revitalize their untamed and unhealthy brows, Natalie along with Bob Plain (business partner and husband), created a step-by-step technique on how to achieve beautiful
and healthy brows for women on the go at an affordable price. What began eleven years ago with its creation of the Brow Boost, an eye conditioner that helps to restore thin, over-plucked brows, the Billion Dollar Brows empire now includes a range of products that help shape and condition. In our opinion, one of the best selling points of the Billion Dollar Brows cosmetic line is that it appeals to women of all skin types and even various hair color! One Game Down: The World Series to Go!
By Demez White, Feature Writer
T
he odds of the Houston Astros winning the World Series in 2015 were 50/1 at the start of the season. The odds of them making the playoffs were about the same. If I’m being honest at the start of the 2015 season I couldn’t name one player on the Houston Astros and due to their cable situation and lack of TV time on major network TV I hadn’t seen a game in almost two years. So when April came around and I started hearing they weren’t bad I started to pay attention. When August came around and they were in first place in their division I really started to pay attention and when they beat the Yankees and I realized they were going to play Kansas City for all the marbles images of 2005 popped up in my head all over again. The technical term would be “bandwagon” fan even though I’ve lived in Houston my entire life but after the Astros have made short work of the NY Yankees they now have an even bigger challenge on their hands. A series with the defending World Series Champion Kansas City Royals. Who were basically last years version of the Astros. Young, fast, exciting and enthusiastic.
The Houston Astros hit home runs, they are exciting and they play hard. No one and when I tell you no one thought they would make it to the playoffs or even be any good, that’s what I mean. If you ask anyone on the street to just name one starter I doubt many people could. Gone are the days of the Bagwell’s and Biggio’s where every game was a sellout and these guys had been around for a decade. There are no Roger Clemens or Randy Johnson’s. These are just guys in their early 20’s from all over the world that love baseball and love playing with each other. Houston Astros
How have the Astros gone from being one of the cheapest and worse teams in Major League Baseball to being one of the best? It’s actually a pretty simple formula. They’ve drafted well. They’ve had high draft picks for the last ten years and they’ve turned those draft picks into some of the most talented young players in the league. I was in Puerto Rico last week and I noticed that in every bar or restaurant I walked into there was an Astros game on. A guy asked me
where I was from and I said, “Houston, Texas” and he couldn’t stop talking about Carlos Correa who is from Puerto Rico. I know in Houston names like James Harden and JJ Watt top the list of who’s who when it comes to talent but in baseball circles Carlos Correa would be on the level of a young Lebron James or Michael Vick when he came out of college. That’s how talented and athletic he is. Jose Altuve just reached 200 hits, which makes him one of the best lead off men in all of baseball.
Whether the Astros beat the Royals and go deeper into the playoffs or simply lose tonight. It doesn’t really matter, they’ve already brought excitement back to a city that for all intent and purposes had given up on its baseball team. The next several years will not only be exciting but they’ll be years we can go to Minute Maid and enjoy watching a winning team. For more information, visit www.astros.com.

BOOK REVIEW
Little Shaq
or almost every day of your life, someone’s reminded you to share. Usually, it’s about sharing your toys but that’s not all. You share games, the sofa, your ideas, snacks, and any chore that needs four hands. Sharing is often about teamwork, and in the new book “Little Shaq” (illustrated by Theodore Taylor III), author Shaquille O’Neal shares a story… It was almost the end of the ballgame and Little Shaq was hot. Every shot he took was “nothin’ but net.” He just could not miss – nor did he miss seeing his cousin, Barry, who called for the ball but Little Shaq never passed it to him. When the game was over and his team won, Little Shaq went looking for Barry. He knew something was wrong. Barry didn’t want to talk. Barry was angry. Once they got home, Little Shaq tried everything to make Barry laugh. Finally, he offered to let Barry be “Player One” on their favorite video game, which meant that Barry got to pick the team name. Barry accepted the offer and the boys started playing, but Little Shaq couldn’t help himself. He wouldn’t – couldn’t – share, one thing led to another and bang! The boys’ favorite game was accidentally broken. Their friend, Rosa, who’d seen everything, pointed out that both boys
were at fault. Little Shaq’s Dad said they needed to work together to replace the broken game. But would they ever be able to earn that kind of money? The answer came that week in school when the boys’ teacher, Ms. Terpenny, announced that the class was going to study plants by growing a garden. Both Barry and Little Shaq knew people who loved plants. Some of their neighbors had gardens, and someone had to make sure the flowers and vegetables were watered. He and Barry could start a gardening business! And so they did, learning as they went along, making mistakes, but earning money, too. It was a great way to save for a video game replacement, and their new business also gave them time to play basketball. But could they put their new talents together with their old ones to make a difference in their neighborhood? Remember back when your coach used to tell you that there’s no “I” in “team”? Your young sportsman has likely heard those same words – but “Little Shaq” will show him how they work. Kids who live for basketball will love this easy-reader story, partly because it’s written by retired b-ball player and author Shaquille O’Neal. O’Neal reached back into his own childhood to create this tale, which is

something 7-to-10-yearolds will enjoy knowing; teachers and parents will appreciate that, in reading this book, kids will get gentlytold lessons in working together, figuring out problems independently, and being responsible and self-sufficient. For children who are just starting to enjoy chapter books, this is a great choice to read and, with illustrations by Theodore Taylor III, it’s a good book to browse. hether your friend or family member is newly diagnosed or in the midst of treatment, she’s unlikely to be wowed by vague offers or having to do your thinking for you. She has enough on her mind; she has cancer. So how can you help? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. That’s why I’ve turned to survivors for a list of support dos and don’ts. Do’s Learning to listen is critical. A woman with breast cancer is going through any number of physical, mental, spiritual and emotional battles during treatment, post treatment and even in remission. Sometimes we want to feed them with all of our best advice, motivation and education, but what they really need is someone to be supportive and be a great listener. Repeat back what you understood and be attentive in what you hear. Sometimes it’s between the lines of communication that is most

What Can I Do to Help “Support During Breast Cancer” important. Do’s Help th em co n n ect wit h others that know what they are going through. Talking directly to other people with breast cancer, may not be what they want to do at first, but with time, can be helpful. «If a friend gave me a survivor›s contact information, that was beneficial,» says Steele, who could follow up with a call when she felt like it. Make sure to ask the women you know with breast cancer if they want to be connected with others. Do’s Ask before you bring food. While you may have your best intent by cooking your grandmother’s favorite casserole to help them save time in the kitchen, it must be remembered that chemo affects everything in the body including one’s taste buds. Appetite can also be affected not to mention the actual nausea associated with treatment. It’s a much better gesture to ask if you can help by buying groceries, ask them what are they able to eat or ask if there is anything you can do to help prepare food of their liking. Do’s Consider their children. Sometimes we forget how important it is to keep children in a normal routine while someone is going through treatment. So much of their time and energy is spend at doctor’s appointments, in the hospital
or just at home completely drained of energy, one of the best things a support friend can do is offer to help with the children. It could be just taking them to or picking them up from school. All of these things help in a daily routine and help keep the family in balance.

Steve Costello: Running to Move Houston Forward as Next Mayor

hen you know better, you do things differently because you see how the current situation can be improved. That is mayoral candidate Steve Costello’s outlook of Houston. It is a city that he considers to be the greatest on Earth but it is also a city that he thinks could do better at addressing our problems. So when you know better you don’t just talk about what needs to be changed or fixed, you act to make things better. Houston has gotten a glimpse of what a Costello administration for Houston would look like from his experience on Houston City Council. He supported the ‘pay as you go’ system and would continued to support that plan if elected as he believes it is the way to reduce the city’s debt by billions. The plan would also increase funding for the city by the millions. He has stated, “As part of this effort, we are building more roads and taking on less debt, which is a smart way for the city to do business.” Costello says it is time out for waste and abuse and time in for efficiency and effectiveness. Another top priority on C o s t e l l o ’s a g e n d a i s k e e p i n g Houstonians safe. He wants to put 1,500 new police officers patrolling the streets. He wants to do this by not

increasing taxes and still give officers a fair wage, retirement benefits, and the tools necessary to do their jobs. Though the city’s debt and safety are top priorities above these as most important is Houston’s road
and traffic. I might have to agree with Costello on that. Fixing on roads and traffic will do a lot more than just make the city look better, it will impact the overall health of the city by reducing people’s angry tolerance. Costello is
going to give our roads and traffic with the city’s finances a one, two punch using the ‘pay as you go’ program. But as I stated earlier when you know better you do things differently. Costello will keep the ‘pay as you go program’ to address the city’s road and traffic problems but manage it differently. Costello is a strong supporter of the HERO ordinance and has voted twice in favor of it. His support of the ordinance has garnered his the backing from some in the LGBT community. Costello has the mindset of engineer so he is trained to look at problems and come up with viable solutions. This experience combined with that of being an entrepreneur and City Councilman are what set him a part from his competitors. Supporting him in this race is his loving family. His wife Debbie of 39 years has been by his side with their children and grandchildren. When he is not spending time with them, Costello relaxes by going for a run. One can only speculate that if Costello is a man that doesn’t like to stop running, that he won’t stop running to move Houston forward. Ruth Chris Keeps it Classy with Meat and Potatoes By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

iving in the fourth largest city in the country has so many advantages, especially when it comes to the many options that are available for dining away from home. If you have a special occasion and are looking for a place that has large private dining facilities, excellent wait staff and scrumptious food, then look no further than Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Recently my family and I attended a private function with about 35 guests at the establishment. We were exposed to one of the finest dining experiences one could ever hope to have. Our evening started with cocktails, followed by appetizers, salad, a main course, and then finally dessert with coffee. The family service started with “Sizzlin’Blue Crab Cakes”, which were two jumbo lump crab cakes prepared in lemon butter. This seafood delight was served hot while the butter was still crackling underneath the crab. The meat was succulent and paired well with the house Moscato. The crab cakes were soon followed by the “Mushrooms stuffed with Crabmeat”, these were broiled mushroom caps filled with lump crab stuffing, and topped with Romano cheese. Before our main course each patron had a choice of salads, we were offered the Ribeye Steak House Salad that was a serving of iceberg, romaine and baby lettuces, garlic croutons, sliced red onions , and cherry tomatoes with Balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The second choice of salad was a Caesar salad made with fresh romaine hearts tossed with Romano cheese and a creamy Caesar dressing. The salads were an excellent transition between the crab cakes and the main course. I chose the Caesar salad; it tasted sweet, tangy, and crunchy. For our main course we had several choices of proteins such as: “8-ounce Petite Fillet Mignon”, 12-ounce Ribeye”, Almond Crusted Chilean Sea Bass and Stuffed Chicken Breast. To accompany the meat, we were served several sides of mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, and fresh steamed broccoli. My choice of meat was the juicy ribeye and needless to say after a couple of bites, I had to yell “Uncle!” However, I did enjoy the rest of my steak with scrambled eggs the next day for brunch and the seasonings had settled in nicely which created a flavorful plate of food. We finished the evening with a choice of desserts: fresh berries and sweet cream, cheese cake or their “chocolate sin cake”. Most of us packed our desserts to go, and wrapped up the event by enjoying some fresh brewed coffee. If you are ready to plan your next fine dining occasion check out Ruth’s Chris Steak House located at 5433 Westheimer Road, Houston Texas. Lovell’s Food For Thought – Can Do Houston
By Dr. Lovell A. Jones, Health Editor
A
fter Men’s Fitness magazine named Houston the “Fattest City in America” in 2005, Mayor Bill White initiated the Mayor’s Wellness Council (MWC) to encourage and motivate Houstonians to make wise choices regarding healthy eating and regular physical activity through education and participation in fun activities. To sustain this vision, in 2006 the MWC created the Houston Wellness Association (HWA), a nonprofit association to engage businesses and the wellness industry in efforts to increase the wellness of all Houston citizens. In 2007 two taskforces were created, one formed by the Houston Wellness Association (HWA) and the other formed by the Mayor ’s Wellness Council. I had the pleasure of chairing the Mayor’s Taskforce on Childhood Obesity. Christine Mei was my counterpart on the one formed by the HWA. When I asked about funding for the childhood taskforce, the response I got was something like, Lovell you are a creative individual. Fortunately, for me, I was director of the congressionally mandated Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH) at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. I also realized that there were funds out there. They just needed to be redirected and brought together. I
also knew that I needed to involve the other taskforce. Our first step was to create a team to bring all of the various entities together. The CRMH already had a Community Relations Core staffed Dr. Beverly Gor. With Beverly assigned to this project, we then were able to involve Dr. Nancy Murray, a faculty member at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Dr. Murray had funding from the NIH Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences grant to address childhood obesity. From Dr. Murray, we were able to get the
assistance of Nancy Correa. With that, the team was formed. Our goal then was to develop a comprehensive strategy to halt the increase in overweight and obesity among children in Houston/ Harris County. To address this goal, we leaned heavy on the biopsychosocial or holistic approach developed by CRMH. An approach based on all of the CRMH efforts around addressing health disparities Today, some would refer to this as a trans-disciplinary approach. However, to us, it involves more that a multitude of disciplines, it truly involves
the community as equal partner. William (Bill) Baum termed it as “Building inside out, so that communities become the ultimate project owners.” For years we have known that a comprehensive approach, involving schools, parks, health departments, community programs, families, and healthcare practitioners would be the only way to address childhood obesity. However, the question that continued to arise was why were these efforts, for the most part, continuing to fail to demonstrate long-term communitywide reductions in childhood obesity rates? One of the reasons we felt was that most, if not all, of these programs were based on outside funding and very little community ownership. What we termed as “parachute science”. Funding that eventually went away without anything to replace it and therefore the efforts went away. When we launched our efforts we had no real designated grant funding or funding of any kind other than to support Beverly and Nancy, and that was borrowed funding. In the end, it became our greatest asset; for we were forced to seek initial funding from within and truly engage the community. Read the full story online at www.stylemagazine.com.
