Look To Cuba

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

hen President Obama called on the world to contribute to fighting Ebola in West Africa, the response was, as the Wall Street Journal reported, “underwhelming.” One nation stood up immediately: Cuba dispatched 165 medical personnel to Sierra Leone, the largest single contribution to that country. “Against Ebola, we can work with anyone,” said Jorge Delgado Bustillo, head of the Cuban Sierra Leone Medical Brigade “The United States? Yes, we can.” Cuba has sent tens of thousands of health workers to aid foreign nations in distress, including 1500 to Haiti after its 2010 earthquake. The Cubans cooperate with the U.S. on migration issues and in patrolling the seas. The Cubans also aid the U.S. in

the wars on drugs and terror, now hosting peace talks between the Colombian government and guerilla leaders there that even American officials acknowledge are helpful. Cubans are freer to travel to the U.S. than Americans are to travel to Cuba. The Cubans are expanding private ownership and encouraging foreign investment, with the Brazilians, Europeans, Chinese and Russians all grabbing opportunities. While the Cubans are far from a democracy and continue to curb dissent and limit freedom of assembly, their leaders are slowly opening the country up, while playing a responsible role across the developing world. And yet America continues to enforce an embargo that began in 1961. The State Department still includes Cuba on its list of terrorist nations. This perverse policy has helped to isolate the U.S. in its own hemisphere. The U.S. government’s unrelenting opposition to Cuba’s presence at hemispheric meetings has offended virtually all of our neighbors, while isolating the U.S. Now the U.S. has been put on notice: When Latin American governments open the seventh Summit of the Americas in Panama City next spring, Cuba will be in attendance whether Obama comes or not.

ttorney General Greg Abbott appeared in Houston days ahead of early voting’s start Monday, October 20th with awesome applause from African Americans and others at north Houston’s Gabby’s Barbecue warmed by polls that placed him up 15 points ahead of his challenger and fundraising firepower six times what Wendy Davis is raising from fellow Texans. “In politics, sometimes desper-

Abbott Attracts Houston Attention Ahead of Monday’s Early Voting

Greg Abbott

The failed embargo against Cuba should have been lifted decades ago. The embargo has been sustained largely for two reasons. First, Castro embarrassed the CIA and the cold warriors, frustrating their attempts to invade the island, destabilize the regime and assassinate him. Second, domestic politics, particularly the passion of Cuban American voters in the swing state Florida, sustained the policy long past its expiration date. But the Cold War is long over, and the new generation of Cuban Americans wants relations opened up. The New York Times recently called on President Obama to normalize relations with Cuba. Only Congress can fully end the embargo, but the president can expand the right to travel to and invest in the island, and can restore normal diplomatic ties. He might sensibly commute the sentences of the three of the five Cuban men who remain in jail after 16 years, and exchange them for Alan Gross, now imprisoned in Cuba for five years as an American spy. This could help launch a new era of engagement with our own hemisphere. The U.S. has been so busy across the world that it has neglected -- and often scorned -- our neighbors. Yet from immigration to terrorism to climate change and economic vitality, good relations with our neighbors are

ate candidates will do desperate things and take their shots. If that’s the way she wants to run her campaign, have at it,” Abbott said in response to a Davis ad being debated across the country for its focus on his having been anchored to a wheel chair for more than 30 years and her claim he yet has not been a help to other victims to life’s tragedies. “My first thought was once again the focus of her campaign is on attacking me, while the focus of my

October 16 - October 22 , 2014

campaign is on attacking the challenges all Texans face. Attacking a guy in a wheel chair is probably not the smartest thing a candidate could do but I’ll leave it up to voters to decide if that ad was appropriate or not. I know what voters really care about is what I will be doing for them as their next governor,” he said. Abbott continued that his campaign is about what is attracting an average of 1,200 people a day to move from across America and everywhere on Earth to make Texas their home. “We lead the way in job creation more than all the other states put together. We have no state income tax, low and predictable regulations that are pro-small business success and farm and energy policies that easily make us the envy of the Earth. My wife of 33 years is a former Houston teacher and principal. My goal is for us to lead all the nation in education as we do all the nation in economic growth. In my Texas everyone, no matter race or religion, last name or the zip code you come from, are and will be encouraged and free to succeed as nowhere else

anywhere,” he said. Early voting will run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm through Friday, October 24th and 7 am to 7 pm, Saturday, October 25th. Sunday, October 26th early voting runs 1 pm to 6 pm. And 7 am to 7 pm for the second week of early voting, which is October 28th to Halloween on October 31st. With early vote registered voters in Harris County can vote at any of 41 early voting sites. For those waiting to Tuesday, November 4th when polls are open from 7 am to 7 pm the requirement is voting only at the specific location in your local neighborhood voting precinct. Last spring’s primaries were separate elections for Democrats and Republicans to choose party nominees but in fall elections everyone is eligible to make up their own individual minds to vote for any individual it is they want to award their vote without regard to their party label. Increased Security at Worthing High School

A Worthing High School

fter a series of recent fights, rumors of gang-related activity, and parents’ out cry HoustonISD has stepped up security at Worthing High School. The latest fight happened Tues-

day morning where an alleged weapon was involved. This coupled with social media talk caused parents to hurry to the school to get their children and look for alternative schools. Houston ISD is investigating the situation and trying to calm parents’ fears about their children’s safety. “Please be assured that all students are safe at this time and instruction is continuing as usual. Please know we take these situations very seriously, as the safety of our students is always our top priority. Administrators have alerted parents via call out. As more details are available they will be shared as well.” For more information, visit houstonisd.org.

Harris County Resident Beware of Jury Duty Scam

T

here is a new scam targeting those living in Houston’s Harris County. Utilizing jury duty as the hook, scammers posing as police officers are calling residents asking why they have missed jury duty, whether they Chris Daniel have done so or not, and them demanding payment for a fine for missing jury duty. One resident has already been tricked out of $250 according to reports. Harris County’s District Clerk Chris Daniel has called the Houston FBI office to investigate the crimes. This scam is extremely believable because they have so much personal information about you already but beware. Daniel gives Houstonians this warning that his office as well as most in law enforcement never ask for payments via the phone for fines. People should report scammers’ calls to the District Clerk’s jury service operation at 713755-6392 and to your local police or the FBI. Tips to the FBI also may be submitted online at https://tips. fbi.gov. For more information, visit hcdistrictclerk. com.

BOOK REVIEW What I Know for Sure

By

By Oprah Winfrey

Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

D

eath and taxes. That’s what your father used to say were the only things in life that you could count on. Neither one was escapable; both were consistent. You can also bet that night will follow day and that there’s good in the world somewhere. You know rules were meant to be broken and hearts can mend. And after listening to “What I Know for Sure” by Oprah Winfrey, you’ll learn a few other things you can pretty well rely on. Years ago, during an interview, the great Gene Siskel asked Oprah Winfrey what she knew for sure. Winfrey was “at a complete loss for words…” “At the end of the day,” she says, “what exactly do I know for sure?” The answer was in fourteen years’ worth of her magazine columns – and in this book. When she had Tina Turner on her show, for instance, Winfrey was nervous and self-conscious about being Turner’s back-up dancer – until, “in an instant,” she realized the joy of seizing the moment. Enjoy yourself, she says, “because this moment is about to be over.” Or take the word “delicious.” Winfrey says it applies to experiences and to foods – and “I know for sure

that a meal that brings… real joy will do you more good” than just grazing through the refrigerator. And, for sure, there’s no law that says you have to clean your plate. Treasure your neighbors and friends, she says, and take time to play. Read books. Look for connections with others, but remember that you control your own life. Know that who you are supposed to be has a lot to do with who you are now. Communicate, but know when to be quiet. Understand that love doesn’t have to be in the romantic sense. Learn the power of “thank you” – and that includes gratitude for yourself and the body you’ve got. Take care of that body. Embrace growing older. Look for miracles. Be ready to give, but learn to say “no.” And remember: “If you’re holding anyone else accountable for your happiness, you’re wasting your time.” Be fearless. Be compassionate. “Keep moving.” I’m always of the mind that an audiobook is better when read by its author. In this case, “What I Know for Sure” is a double delight because… well, it’s Oprah. Indeed, I couldn’t imagine anyone other than author Oprah Winfrey presenting this book – in part, because

only Winfrey can relay the excitement we know well from her TV shows; and in part, because she adds so much emotion to this audiobook. We feel the joy, the heartbreak, and the fun about which she talks - but don’t think for a minute that this book is just fluffy. No, there’s solid advice inside here, ideas that are useful for anyone, and stories that are perfectly entertaining.

This is an easy audiobook to listen to because it’s filled with positivity and… well, it’s Oprah. And if you’re a fan, then “What I Know For Sure” is one I think you’ll love to death.

hen I look in the mirror, I do not fantasize about going back in time to my 20s or early 30s. I would never want to return. Nor would I ever want to dress or act like some 30 something year old women who still think they are in their teens or 20s. But with that confident stance, it brought me to the question of are women comfortable in their own skin or actually in denial when it comes to their health, fitness, lifestyle and mindsets? I have to admit, I am proud to be a 43-year-old mom of two kids. Although I’m thrilled with the weight loss I was able to achieve and now I maintain since changing my life manta and lifestyle from excuse mode to execution the nagging question kept lingering in my mind about how do I help my training clients and the ones I coach evaluate where they are mentally in their own process. Here are some facts & stats to consider: ** This statistic, from a BU Today report on fighting obesity is enough to ruin your morning: “No population in the United States have a higher obesity rate than African American Women. The study concludes, four out of five

Comfortable in Your Own Skin or Denial women who are overweight or obese, are African American according to a 2012 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ** With $174 billion a year spent on diabetes-related illness in America and obesity quickly overtaking smoking as a cause of cancer deaths, it is past time to try something new. ** African-American and Hispanic men are nearly twice as likely as Caucasian men to say the butt is among the most attractive features of a woman. ** African-American and Hispanic women are twice as likely as Caucasian women to report not wanting to change their body in any way. ** 74% of those surveyed believe that a curvier body type is more appealing now than it has been over the past ten years. ** New research has come forth, declaring once and for all – obese women earn six percent less than leaner women when doing the exact same work. Further, the financial penalties of being overweight at work are worse for women than men – more than $2,000

or more a year, in fact. Are black women encouraged to stay unhealthy? As a society, you see images, hear comments all the time that make me wonder what are we promoting? Are there society, race and relationship factors that keep Black women in mental prisons? How many middle-aged white women fear their husbands will find them less attractive if their Jade Gold weight drops to less than 200 pounds? I have yet to meet one. But, how many times have we heard the comments of black husbands that go like this, “Baby, you don’t need to loose weight I love your thick thighs.” “Do you want to loose your butt by doing all that working out?” “Don’t lift weights I don’t want you to get to bulk, you will look like a man.” And let’s not forget what some men want for dinner, fat back, ham hocks, smothering food in gravy, oils and other saturated fats. It seems that black women are doomed to fail in

the weight loss battle. But then comes the question each and every one of us must answer, Am I really comfortable in my own skin or is my weight something I am just in denial about? Get the answer to that question and more on stylemagazine.com.

hen I arrived in Houston, Texas from Portland, Oregon last weekend, it was a startling sight to observe foreigners and Americans from coast-to-coast awaiting connecting flights from Houston Intercontinental Airport walking around together wearing surgical masks. It was blatantly obvious the Lone Star State could no longer claim that a lonely Liberian who may have lied his way out of Africa is Texas’ only infected victim of the deadly Ebola virus because two new sad cases have now been confirmed. Thomas Eric Duncan was the dishonest disease carrier accused of bringing the Ebola virus to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where two of the nurses who treated him while wearing head-to-toe coverings still contracted his severe illness. Nurse Nina Pham is currently in stable condition. Nurse Amber Joy Vinson flew across the Midwest on an airliner with fever the day before being diagnosis with Ebola with the permission of the CDC, even though government guidelines should have prevented her from boarding any flights. President Obama is acting really pissed about that. Today, those two unfortunate nurses’ entire way of life has been turned upside down. Their family and friends are being examined inside and out. Who did the two women touch after they left their hospital jobs? Who have they hugged and kissed? Where did they shop for groceries? Did they touch any fruit while they were there, but decide to put it back and unknowingly planted live grenades for the next innocent shoppers in the fruit section of the store? What about their parents’ occupations? One question leads to another, then another, then another… Liberia is thousands of miles away from Texas. Fort Worth, El Paso, Austin, San Antonio and Houston/Galveston are much closer. God forbid if the government declares an impending Ebola outbreak as a national disaster, as opposed to three (so far) isolated Texas cases. If confirmed cases reach double figures, then fear will immediately zoom down I-45 faster than a speeding bullet. And speaking of bullets in the gun-loving state of Texas, no weapon is more deadly than an uncontained virus capable of creating a mass pandemic. When an entire population of paranoid people starts to panic, it creates an unstoppable avalanche of helplessness and insecurity. A citywide insurrection will undoubtedly set the stage for curfews, strict quarantines, community calamity and distrust of anyone from the DFW and surrounding vicinities. If federal troops are called in to maintain crowd control, it will embolden conspiracy theorists from coast-to-coast to declare Texas as ground zero for Martial Law being declared in America. More sinister questions will ensue, such as “How is it possible for two minority nurses who were covered from head-to-toe in protective gear to contract the disease, when mostly every courageous Caucasian medical worker in Africa routinely returns to the United States as the picture of health?” “Why is Duncan and every other African adult male related to Ebola always photographed wearing lime green sports shirts?” “Why do healthy adults and children start getting worse after they’ve taken so-called vaccines?” “Is the Ebola hysteria a cruel hoax and a worldwide smokescreen to make the planet feel pressured (forced) to take a secret vaccine designed to accomplish the #1 objective on the Georgia Guidestones planned decades earlier by elitist eugenic billionaires of the New World Order as a population control/stabilization strategy?” One question leads to ten thousand more important

8

Texas, Ebola and YOU! ones found deep in the rabbit hole called scholarly research, skeptical YouTube speculation and curious Facebook postings. An African good Samaritan allegedly lied his way into the Lone Star State. Therefore, the media and average Americans will continue to demonize the deceased Liberian. While the FBI, CIA, and Homeland Security are busy listening to cell phone calls and intercepting private emails, storing text messages and recording electronic transmissions of decent American Citizens stripped of their civil liberties and constitutional rights whom they suspect of harboring terrorist intents, a real weapon of mass destruction has been detonated in Dallas by two emergency room visits, a handshake or an unsanitary sneeze. He was sent home the first time. How might this Dallas Ebola debacle affect healthy hypochondriacs in cities North, South, East and West of Jerry World? Liberian Thomas Eric Duncan departed this life soon after arriving in the Big D. Most people feel justified in declaring that Duncan’s legacy in death is that of a criminally negligent, illegal immigrant who was intentionally deceitful. But here’s the million dollar question: How much different will ordinarily responsible, law-abiding and forthright folks (who are normally good-hearted Texans) be with family, friends, neighbors, business associates, customers, and their employers when asked about their Dallas associations due to Kevin Bacon inspired Six Degrees of Separation beliefs when they are asked, “When was the last time you’ve been to Dallas?” Where you wearing rubber gloves, a surgery mask and a hazmat jumpsuit while you were there?” T.D. Jakes himself needs to ‘Get Ready! Get Ready! Get Ready...if The Potter’s House slowly starts to become The Empty House due to a citywide flashflood of fear, or Full House for the very same reason. Without a doubt, church pews will be filled by those who will seek the refuge of their faith as a coping mechanism and a calming force if an abundance of new Ebola cases are confirmed in Cowboy Country. Even Mark Cuban’s charm, charisma and massive cash flow could not cure the curse connected to a confession that you are a Maverick from Dallas who had indirect contacted with an infected Ebola patient. If multiple deaths are attributed to the hometown of America’s team, Tony Romo’s 5-1 city will be branded with the Scarlett letter of “E.” No one will want to play them, or tackle them for fear of blood, sweat, tears and other Dallas fluids splashing through the air. The eyebrows of the nation will suspiciously rise like the country is collectively saying, “What’Cha Talking ‘Bout Willis” when Dallas tourism officials attempt to generate new visitors and new business ventures. The letter ‘D’ will be transformed to the new letter ‘D?’ if Dallas begins to represent diabolical words like “dishonest” and “disingenuous.” Our North Texas neighbors might find themselves looking for loopholes to leave the Lone Star State because of the unbearable stigma of knowing they are viewed as the national incubator of a so-called incurable Ebola scourge. There are possible solutions to keep Texas from getting kicked out of the union. Researchers and scientists must confirm and immediately release their findings regarding the thousands of Africans who are Ebola survivors. Healing serums and effective antidotes must be mass-produced and made available to the general public, even though they may be unprofitable to major drug companies, unless there is an upside stock option attached to its development and production. Helpful theories should be published regarding patients whose bodies were

flooded with fluids, which dramatically slowed the spread of the virus. Encouraging news stories about the Dallas medical community must also be reported. Without the healing hope of a cure, or promising progress on the horizon, Dallas will soon be cut off from the rest of the country. If they are ostracized in this manner, Dallas residents could find themselves faced with the same moral dilemma as Michael Eric Duncan had to face when he was filling out travel documents at a dusty airport in Africa. He had two choices: Admit the truth and become an undesirable pariah that many gun-toting Texans will now shoot on sight, or else, keep their DFW connections a closely guarded secret so they will not be boarded onto trains like pre-World War II Jews in Germany on a one way journey to zero due-process Guantanamo Bay-like, concentration camps with other suspected carriers or uncooperative enablers of a savage, Texas-sized Ebola pandemic. If you live in Texas, then you are probably re-thinking adding new Dallas experiences to your resume, and perhaps, you are roping in your relatives and close friends who live within the DFW loop. Dear Dallas, the eyes of Texas are, indeed, upon you – in addition to the gaze and undivided attention of America, as well as the White House in Washington, DC, the CDC in Atlanta, and concerned cities all over the world. Houston, we don’t have a problem…yet!

City of Houston Stands Ready to Tackle Ebola

ouston Mayor Annise Parker wants Houstonians to know if someone is diagnosed with Ebola in Houston the city is ready. “It is something to be aware and concerned about but not something to panic about,” said Mayor Parker. Houston Emergency Medical Services Director Dr. David Persse and Houston Department of Health and Human Services Director Stephen Williams briefed Mayor Parker along with Houston City Council on Houston’s readiness and response if the city had to deal with a case of Ebola. “We have to immediately isolate the person who is ill and determine who the contacts are, what level of contact they had and if anyone needs to be quarantined that needs to happen rather immediately,” Dr. Persse told those in attendance. Members of his team have been in contact with the Center of Disease Control and have met with local hospitals, first responders, and other community leaders.

ENTERTAINMENT The Book of Luke James By Trevor

I

G. Piper, Creative Director

t’s always awesome to witness a new phoenoma in-person if you can be open to it. Entering House of Blues to a good looking crowd of couples, hipsters and very good looking, fashionable people, DJ Baby Jae of the Krackernuttz crew is hyping up the crowd spinning some classsic hip-hop while maintaining an up tempo. As it gets closer to showtime he slows it down to some classic R&B tracks and the crowd sings right along to every word indicating that they are primed and ready for this style of show. The band decends from backstage to jump on their instruments to rock out. Then pow, the man of the hour, clad in all white takes the stage and the audience erupts with applause and cheers. It’s Luke James time!! He runs through his new material displaying his fantastic range from high notes to low. The closest example would be that of Prince. Luke’s personality illuminates on stage as he plays comedian, down to earth singer guy and creator of that good vibe. The New Orleans born and bread vocalist has been singing since his youth and is at home on the microphone. We had the opportunity to chat with the gracious crooner backstage after the show: Houston Style Magazine: Welcome back to H-Town. How’s the new al-

bum? Luke James: Album is doing absolutely well, people are very receptive, the critics have been great and gracious (laughs), and people are buying it so it’s awesome. HSM: We see that you’re modeling for the Gap and Staple. How’s that going? LJ: It’s awesome, these people coming around and want me to wear their clothes so why not? It’s all fun, it’s all art, I’m all down if it’s positive. HSM: May we assume you have a vocal church background? LJ: Sort of, I’m more of a sponge. I was raised in the church but it wasn’t heavy in my house like that. I’m more

y work for Houston Style Magazine takes me to some amazing places, but I have to say that Washington, D.C. is one of my favorite spots to visit. I appreciate the culture, spirit and amazing history of Washington. Even with all that, a trip to Washington is not complete without noshing on the finest cuisine in the city. The Destination DC team is always my go to when I want to experience the best that Washington, D.C. has to offer. This time they suggested Boss Shepherd’s for lunch, an exciting new eatery in the heart of Washington located in the Warner Theater building. Boss Shepherd’s not only met my expectations, but exceeded them. Dining should be an unforgettable experience. I’ll admit, I’m someone who has a love affair with my food and I’m totally in love with Boss Shepherd’s! Boss Shepherd’s has not even been open for

of a sponge of people that move people and church music of course does do that. I’ve always been intrigued by different genres of music that made people feel a certain way and just made people lose themselves in the moment like gospel is one of those things, rock and roll, soul music. Things like that HSM: How heavy is your vocal training regiment because your range is phenomenal? LJ: Umm, keep singing(laughs). Less talking, a lot of practice…

HSM: Wow, how does that feel now? Your’re on stage, you’re on tour. You went on tour with Beyonce! How was that? LJ: That was amazing man, out of this world. Just to be on tour and on stage. That’s where I live the most. Create the music and get out there and perform it and see how it affects the people. I had a great time on tour with Bey and now headlining my own tour. It’s absolutely amazing and a blessing. I’m just grateful to be able to do what I love to do. Those that already knew of him love him and sang along and those of us that were new to his sound were changed and went on to download his new self-titled album. For more information, visit officiallukejames.com

HSM: Lots of tea? LJ: Oh yea, a lot of warm things. Just constantly training myself, learning new things, listening to new things, listening to new music. Just vocally

HSM: You seem very artsy yet you’re album is self titled, why not something deeper or more artistic? LJ: You know this is my first official album, I like to look at this album as a prelude to the Luke James story. It only made since to title this first chapter, the cover Luke James. Like the book of Luke. HSM: How long ago did you mixtape drop? LJ: Like 2 years ago now.

6 months and they have already been receiving rave reviews for their divine farm-to-table fare created by Executive Chef Jeremy Waybright. Boss Shepherd’s was recently featured in the Washington Post and made Tom Sietsema’s top 10 list. The praise that they have been receiving is well deserved. My colleague and I were greeted with a genuine smile from the hostess, which set the tone for our Boss Shepherd’s food love affair. Boss Shepherd’s has a starter that’s not the usual bread and butter. Chef Waybright created a signature starter of pimento cheese and homemade crackers. Pimento cheese is not a favorite and I was a little hesitant, but Chef Waybright’s creativity with pimento cheese was a pleasant surprise for the palate. Boss Shepherd’s is also known for their delectable creations from behind the bar that pair well with any selection from their lunch and dinner menu. The Manhattan and Central Market Sparkler did not disappoint, but the Belvedere Mango Passion Cosmo and the Blueberry Lemonade were absolute favorites. In fact, I wanted to extend my trip just to have another Blueberry Lemonade. Cocktails and appetizers go hand in hand, so we took the suggestion for the pot pie appetizer. Their take on the pot pie was unique and delicious. Only Boss Shepherd’s could turn pot pie into a deliciously light fritter. These little morsels of goodness were full of pot pie flavor without that heavy feeling.

Chef Jeremy Waybright

Born in Texas, I know Southerners pride themselves on having that magic recipe to perfect fried chicken. Fried chicken can’t be too dark or too light and the skin has to have that perfect golden brown color. The fried chicken (brined for 12 hours) at Boss Shepherd’s gave me that piece of Southern Heaven while I was away from home. Chef Waybright is a Southern native and he knows you can’t have fried chicken without biscuits and his buttermilk biscuits are absolute perfection. Just when you think that is enough, Chef Waybright has 3 sauces to accompany this Southern staple. The chicken was juicy, tender and perfectly seasoned. Hungry for more?
