COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

T

he final presidential debate takes place Wednesday night in Las Vegas, the famed home of boxing, wrestling and MMA showdowns. Millions will tune in looking for another slugfest. But Las Vegas isn’t simply about boxing matches and casinos. The challenges faced by the city, the state and the region should inform the debate. Unfortunately, too often the debate moderators simply dwell on the scandals of the day rather than explore how local challenges frame national issues. Somehow, the first debate, held at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y., managed to ignore the growing student debt crisis. The debate in St. Louis, just miles away from Ferguson, Mo. -- never mentioned that city or probed the issues raised by its racially biased policing and criminal justice system. The Commission on Presidential Debates has released the supposed topics for the moderator, Fox News’ Chris Wallace, to explore Wednesday. These include debt and entitlements, immigration, the economy, the Supreme Court, foreign hot spots and the

POLITICAL By Burt

Local Focus Could Save Us From Another Useless Debate candidates’ fitness to be president. The last is likely to start a mud fight that could muck up the whole night. On immigration, Nevada has been a center of the growing and fierce debate over undocumented immigrants. We’ve heard all the posturing on Donald Trump’s plan to build a border wall. What would be more interesting in Nevada is a discussion of the future of legal immigration. America has about 11 million undocumented workers, twothirds of whom have been here 10 years or more. It also has 31 million legal immigrants, with a million more added each year. Counting their children, one in four Americans is of recent immigrant stock. And with the boomers retiring, all of the projected growth of the U.S. labor force from 2020 to 2030 will be from immigrants and their children. That raises fundamental questions. For example, some call for giving preference in legal immigration to skilled workers rather than preferring those with family relations, even if unskilled. Uniting families is a value shared by conservatives and liberals alike. On the other hand, the economy would benefit more from skilled workers. What priority would the two candidates choose? The presidential commission calls for discussing foreign hot spots, but surely the first hot spot that should be discussed is right here at home: the punishing drought that is devastating the West and Southwest. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared most of Nevada a natural disaster area from the lingering drought, with some of its biggest farmers facing 50 percent reductions in groundwater. NASA now warns of the high chance

of a 35-year mega-drought throughout the Southwest and Great Plains. July’s global temperatures were the hottest of any month since they began keeping records in 1880. Last year was the hottest on record; the first seven months of this year are even hotter. Global warming and catastrophic climate change aren’t distant concerns in these lands. Ask the candidates what they would do in response? Do we ignore it and struggle through? Or should we take real measures to address climate change? Or consider big money that corrupts our politics. Las Vegas billionaires like Sheldon Adelson are brazen in their efforts to swing elections. The current Nevada Senate election is a case in point. Outside billionaires like George Soros and Tom Steyer on the Democratic side and the Koch brothers on the Republican side have poured more than $48 million in independent spending into the Nevada Senate race, compared to the 7 million spent by the two candidates combined. Nationally, this cost of this year’s elections will far exceed the record $6 billion spent in the last presidential year. This level of outside money corrupts our politics and leaves our citizens cynical. Both presidential candidates say they would seek to curb it. How? How do we get real reform from the very politicians who have been elected by the old system? Finally, suburban poverty in Las Vegas is rising faster than it is nationwide. Between 2000 and 2004, there was a 123 percent increase in the suburban poverty rate in southern Nevada, compared to the alarming

arly voting across Texas begins Monday, October 24th for the November 8, 2016, fall elections at 46 early voting sites across Harris County. Polls will be open from 8 amto-6 pm the first week, 7 am-to-7 pm on Saturday, October 29, 1 pm-to-6 pm on Sunday, October 30 and from 7 am-to-7 pm on October 31st through November 4. “With more than 2.2 million registered voters, about half the county’s population, is registered to vote in Harris County. Up to 1.5 million of those registered voters are expected to vote this first open election for president since 2008,” said Stan Stanart, who as Harris County Clerk is responsible for running the elections in Harris County. In Texas, each of the 254 counties are responsible for running the elections in their county and reporting the results to the Texas Secretary of State. To find out where to early vote please see www. harrisvotes.com. ”I am warning people to expect long lines if they wait until the final days of early voting, let alone the last few hours of Election Day. We will operate a record 46 early voting locations this year in order to accommodate heavy turnout for the presidential contest. Even so, voters shouldn’t wait until the last

65 percent increase nationwide. This poverty comes from the loss of jobs, and from the spread of lousy jobs that are low wage, part time, contingent and precarious. It also reflects the hangover from the housing collapse. Housing prices are rising in the region, but they remain 35 percent below their peak in 2006. At the end of 2015, nearly 30 percent of local homeowners were “seriously underwater,” about two times the national rate. Here in Las Vegas as elsewhere, mortgage brokers targeted minority buyers -- the very workers who were struggling the hardest to bring their families out of poverty. Brokers lured them with packages that they couldn’t afford, peddled liar loans to hide their incomes, and promised them they could refinance because housing prices always go up. Then the banks blew up the economy. The banks got bailed out, but the homeowners didn’t. What would the two candidates do to address the spread of suburban poverty, to create good jobs rather than lousy ones, and to aid those still struggling in the aftermath of the Great Recession? Moderator Wallace should use Las Vegas as more than a backdrop. He should use it as a guide to issues that matter. Perhaps that can save us from another scratch-and-claw alley fight. minute,” Stanart said. “We will probably host more than 100,000 people on the last day of early voting. Do not get caught up in that mass of people and the parking situations,” he said. Stanart explained early voting has become more and more accessible. In 2004, there were 32 sites that were open for 119.5 hours. In 2016, there will

be 46 sites including new locations in fast growing areas of west and northwest Harris County. Early Voting sites will be open 127 hours for nearly two weeks. Absentee voting is also an option for senior citizens, disabled individuals, and those that will be away from the county on Tuesday, November 8. The deadline for requesting a mail-in ballot is Friday, October 28. If county

officials receive the mail-in ballot by Election Day, it is counted. In 2000, Harris County had 1,886,661 registered voters with 549,974 or 52.77 percent choosing to vote in the fall general election. By 2012, Harris County had 2,010,577 voters and 1,204,167 or 59.89 percent of the registered voters chose to vote. T h r o u g h o u t Te x a s t h e Presidential race is closer than any time in 40 years and each vote is going to be more important than ever highlighted by a University of Houston poll released this past Tuesday. The results show Republican nominee Donald Trump with a slight led of 41 percent and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton at 38 percent. Just three percentage points in Texas separate the candidates. Three percentage points is the margin of error which means either candidate could be leading this year compared to four years ago when Mitt Romney won Texas by 17 percentage points. The Different Side of the Rose

interview with Time. Always underestimated for what she appears to be. People missed the substance that makes up Amber. She uses her body for more than sex appeal but also to run numerous businesses, fuel her philanthropic efforts, be a mother to her son and redefine herself daily. “I am a mogul. I have a bunch of businesses, I’m now an actress, I’m an author, I went on an entire world tour and I don’t even sing. So if that doesn’t tell you that I am an entrepreneur, then I don’t know what does.” Through the Amber Rose Foundation, Amber has become a champion of women’s causes and issues. She has vowed to put an end to sexual violence, victim blaming, derogatory labels, and gender inequality. Just this month she held the Amber Rose Slut Walk Festival for women empowerment. Fusing awareness, fashion, music, celebrities with a walk was the goal behind the zero tolerance event to raise funds for women’s services. Amber has become the voice behind the feminist movement of the new generation. As loud as she rallies her crew for the betterment of women, one might be surprise to learn that Amber does not like the limelight. She even went so far as to say that she probably shouldn’t have participated with Dancing with the Stars because of all the attention. She told E! Online, “I’m not really good with a lot of attention. I probably shouldn’t have done this show, but whatever,” she confessed. Every day Amber proves that one should never judge on appears and one never stops evolving. With each bellowing cry, she empowers one more woman to stand up for herself and belief. She is truly a rose with many layers and we get to see a different one with the passage of time.

Rose

P

hilanthropist, Activist and shy are not words normally associated with Amber Rose. But those words describe her far better than ones usually associated with her character. With more fame, Amber has gained a bigger platform that she is using to bring attention larger than herself for the benefit of every woman. Meet a different side of the Rose. Happy Birthday is in order for Amber Rose who was born Amber Levonchuck on October 21, 1983, in Philadelphia, PA. Her parents have interesting backgrounds with traces of Irish, Italian, Scottish and Cape Verdan roots. They divorce when she was very young leaving the family strapped. A young Amber took it upon herself to help the family by becoming a stripper to contribute to family finances. That moved shaped who Amber is today. As a stripper, Amber became really good at dancing which allowed her to break into the music world being a dancer in artists videos. It is when she appeared in a video for Young Jezzy that got her

10

noticed by Kanye West, which launched her big break. Kanye might not have made Taylor Swift famous but he most certainly played a hand in the fame of Amber Rose. Amber went from stripping to being the featured dancer for artists like Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, Fabolous, and her future hubby Wiz Khalifa. Being a stripper in general and society automatic makes certain assumptions about you and your character and labels you. The same was for Amber. She was thought to be stupid and a slut. Insults and hateful comments constantly followed her everywhere she went by people who were judging her just on her appearance and not getting to know who Amber was. Finally, she had enough and took on the feminist movement to empower herself and other women and break from the barriers of slut-shaming and other forms of intimidation. “The fact that I was a stripper does not take away the fact that I’m smart, that I am witty, that I am capable of running my own business,” she says in an

Two weeks before Halloween, the company is pulling some clown masks off its shelves and out of its online store after sightings of menacing clowns across the country. Home Depot took a similar step last month and pulled a Halloween decoration called the Scary Peeper Creeper from its stores in Canada

following complaints from shoppers. Target declined to say which masks it pulled. Some were still available at Target.com on Monday via links to Spirit Halloween.com and HalloweenCostumes. com. Airlines Get Tougher Rules On Hidden Fees, Performance Reporting CNN Newswire

he Obama administration is cracking down on airlines’ “hidden fees.” The new rules, adopted by the Department of Transportation on Tuesday, will also require the airlines to collect expanded information on late flights, mishandled bags, even damaged wheelchairs. Among the fees that the DOT wants airlines to make clear to customers are any extra costs for bringing along luggage, seat assignments, changing or canceling flights. While airlines already are required to reimburse bag fees when bags are lost, the new rules would require reimbursement of bag fees when luggage is “substantially delayed.” Apple’s Rumored Mac Event Set for October 27 CNN Newswire

Kendrick Brown Talks “Surviving Compton” & More

Cecilia Smith, Feature Writer

O

nce deemed the “most dangerous group in the world”, NWA’s “Straight Outta Compton” biography became a blockbuster movie, exploring the complex rise and eventual splintering of the former West Coast juggernaut. Although the movie opened to favorable critic reviews, the omission of certain details such as the notorious assault of journalist Dee Barnes, became ammunition for certain key players that had been removed from the storyline. Noticeably absent from the film was singer Michel’le, who worked alongside a young Dr. Dre and DJ Yella as the “First Lady of World Class Wreckin’ Cru” before the formation of NWA. Also absent were the allegations of domestic assault that she claimed occurred during relationships with both Dre and Suge Knight. Now, the “Turn Off the Lights” vocalist is back in the spotlight following the release of Lifetime’s recent “Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le”, in which she narrates her personal account of the story. Discovered while working in a department store, it would be World Class Wreckin’ Cru founder DJ Alonzo “Lonzo” Williams that would initially bring her into the fold. Stepping into the role of Lonzo, Houston native Kendrick Brown sat

“I didn’t even know that they had officially started promotion. We just shot the movie in July, so we thought that it wasn’t coming out until 2017, but you can literally edit film on-set. A lot of filmmakers have developed on-site footage that they’ll begin editing that day. The audition process: I originally got called in to audition for the role of Ice Cube. (laughs) I’m thinking, “Ice Cube? I look nothing like him.” Of course I didn’t get it, but they ended up calling me back for the role of Alonzo Williams.

Brown

down with Houston Style to discuss the film and the man that created a movement in his own right, using his popularity as a club owner and prominent West Coast DJ. Known for Greenleaf, American Crime, Survivors Remorse, Underground and more, Brown is quickly making waves of his own as a rising actor worth keeping an eye on. On the sudden release of the film:

Thoughts on the controversial storyline: I think a lot of time we’re able to keep things out of sight, out of mind. But in the case of say Ray Rice, he was punished before, but then the video c a m e out. It’s hard to ignore t h e visuals. Surviving Compton Cast I didn’t have the full story, but there are plenty of people who are Michel’le and stayed for

Brown

whatever reason. I have nothing against Dr. Dre as an artist. I love to see people grow and evolve. But her depiction of her life comes from a place of honesty and truthfulness. There’s a lesson to be learned. Alonzo Williams’ role in discovering Michel’le: I was doing an interview with J. Anthony Brown when he (Williams) called up. Eazy is often credited, but in talking to Alonzo he’s actually the one that introduced her to Eazy. She worked at a department store where Alonzo heard her singing and got her contact information. When Mona Lisa couldn’t make it to the studio (to record “Turn Off the Lights”) Alonzo contacted Michel’le. Eazy-E met Jerry Heller through Alonzo. So yeah, he played a good part in a lot of it. In SOC he’s an asshole in SOC, but in this film you see a different side.

OBITUARY

Houston Legend Skipper Lee Frazier Passes at 89 By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

T

he voice was unmistakable. The name was always recognizable. Skipper Lee Frazier was a Houston legend, civil rights activist, and an icon in radio. Frazier died over the weekend surrounded by family and friends. He was 89 years old. Houstonians have listened to the distinctive voice of Frazier for over 60 years on the airwaves. He first started on KYOY as a part-time dj doing record hops and talent shows to managing undiscovered talent. He promoted and managed the careers of Lee such artists and talents as: The Masters of Soul, Mark Putney, Conrad Johnson, Beau Williams (who was known then as Bobo Mr. Soul) and Sugar Bear. During that time, he managed two more groups that brought him and the city, worldwide acclaim. They were, Archie Bell and the Drells and the TSU Tornadoes. Their big hit was a very popular dance tune named “Tighten Up,” of which Frazier wrote the lyrics and the Tornadoes did the music. Known for his “Mountain of Soul” signature, Frazier praised God daily playing Gospel music and shouting with vocalists on KCOH for 22 years. During this tenure at KCOH, which covered more than 22 years, he either MC’d or promoted shows for James Brown, B.B. King, Wes Montgomery, the O’Jays and the Kool Jazz Festival which was presented in cities all over the country. Success in those and other venues enabled him to open up and operate the Venus Motel, another venture that was really successful, and which he stuck with until the time came for him to do something else. Wanting to leave a legacy for his sons, he sold the Venus Motel to open Eternal Rest Funeral Home. Frazier will be funeralized this Friday, October 21, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church 2504 Almeda-Genoa Rd. (77047). In lieu of flowers, send donations in the name of Skipper Lee Frazier to the Jones Memorial United Methodist Church Prayer Ministry. Interment Houston Memorial Gardens.

ou have the East Coast, the West Coast, and now Houston has the Third Coast as we are cohesively making strides in medical science research and education. The Texas Medical Center president and CEO Dr. Robert C. Robbins stated that the fine-dining restaurant Trevisio, rebirth Third Coast, will be the new destination in the heart of Houston’s Texas Medical Center where the “world’s entrepreneurs and change-makers can come together to feed their hunger for innovation.” The 13,500-square-foot area welcomes you at the door with the bar as its eye. It also includes a patio space with an outdoor fireplace and 2 conference rooms. The décor is mod-chic with business blues and dark grays. Dark woods, marble, and leather give the space a distinguished look. However, there might be a light rumor that the décor is seasonal. Whereas we do not know if it will be or not, we do know the menu will definitely be seasonal with a few year round standards. Award-winning executive chef Jon Buchanan stopped by my table to actually speak with me about the menu. “I love the diversified culture of Houston and it has been incorporated in our menu from the Kimchi (an in-house specialty) to the dessert.” Caribbean, Asian, Southern, Hispanic, and even Cajun flavors dance together on the menu from the Ahi Poke (my personal fav) cuddled inside of a freshly cracked coconut shell surrounded by mango slivers, fresh avocado and red and green onions. The lightly sea-salted baked Taro chips set off all combined flavors and presentation. “I wanted to utilize sustainable and local ingredients,” said Chef Buchanan. On the menu, you can find Houston Dairymaids, Atkinson Farms, Homestead Gristmill, and 44 farms as local purveyors. “Can you believe ninety percent of the menu is gluten free? We are featuring a lot of protein and fresh produce,” said executive chef Jon Buchanan. “We wanted to keep the menu very light and healthy, but still offer a lot of flavor.” Chef Buchanan also designed one of the most fun and innovative happy hours you will ever visit. With his Gumbo Balls and Tequila Lime Wings, you are in for a treat. Pair it with more than 116 bottles on the wine list, a super fun Sommelier, specialty cocktails, ten local beer selections and more, and you will be happy for more than an hour. Don’t forget about dessert! A trio of apple tart & brown butter ice cream with caramel sauce stood next to a sticky sweet toffee pudding cake with whipped cream and brandy snap, which stood next to a flaky strawberry shortcake with fresh-cut strawberries. Third Coast is now open and resides in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. Make your way to the place to enjoy the atmosphere, food, view, and feed your innovation, tell them #TeamStyleMag sent you! For more information visit: thirdcoasthouston.com.

TRAVEL

Time to Plan Your Holiday Getaway to the Beautiful Beaches of the U.S.Virgin Islands

By Lisa Valadez, Associate Publisher

Caneel Bay’s tranquil setting which includes seven of the most beautiful pristine beaches offers its guest every possible amenity for relaxation and disconnect. If the resort is out of your budget, a day visit to the resort’s Honeymoon Beach is suggested. With plenty of picturesque beaches, restaurants, bars, and unique boutique shopping, St. John should definitely be on your itinerary as a day trip if staying on one of the other of the U.S. Virgin Islands. For the historian type of traveler, a drive to the Annaberg Plantation while discovering many of the island’s beaches will paint a vivid picture about

H

oustonians don’t necessarily look for warmer weather during the holidays; after all, let’s all admit that we’re hoping our 90+ degreedays are over with. Also, while we are luck enough to live near the ocean, I think we can all honestly admit that we wish our beloved Galveston was a myriad of beautiful shades of blue, turquoise, aqua, and so on. Can you picture that clear blue water yet? Thanks to direct flights from United Airlines to the beautiful U.S. Virgin Islands, days of daydreaming about sipping on a cocktail with toes in the sand, while gazing at amongst crystal clear water are over! With that being said, doesn’t ditching the chaos of the

the labor and equipment used during the 18th century. (The views from the plantation are simply amazing!) Before heading off the island of St. Thomas, head over to Ocean 362 for a one-of-a-kind Caribbean dining experience. The chef-driven innovative menu offers the freshest ingredients combining local flavors with a modern twist.

holidays and trading it, instead, for making some great memories with the family or even escaping it all for some beachside r&r sound like a great plan? Yes, that means get on that laptop or smartphone and start planning your U.S. Virgin Islands getaway! Don’t worry, we have got the where to stay and what to do all planned out for you. And let’s not forget, No Passport Required! Following up on our article from August, “US Virgin Islands: No Passport Required”, we suggested staying at the family friendly Bolongo Bay on the island of St. Thomas for those wanting the beautiful scenery and small hotel boutique feel without breaking the bank (we loved this place by the way). However, if you want luxury and have the means to splurge, then Caneel Bay Resort is definitely a must. Just a short scenic ferry ride from Red Hook (St. Thomas) will take you to the island of St John where the 166-room resort is located. Founded by Laurance Rockefeller,

Back on the island of St. Thomas, for those seeking the best views, take a skyride to Paradise Point. Experiencing a beautiful sunset while sipping on a Bushwacker (local drink) while 700ft above the town of Charlotte Amalie is definitely the perfect opportunity for a “selfie” moment. If heights are not your preference, perhaps an evening cocktail at the très chic Havana Blue restaurant will be a great way to wrap up your outing. From a glowing wall of water to the white linen illuminated by a soft blue radiating light and the soft whisper of beach waves, Havana Blue’s Latin Style is simply a grown and sexy feel. May we suggest the mango mojito? To sum it up, the U.S. Virgin islands are simply stunning. Although, I do wish my words paint a vivid picture, when it comes to travel, words are just never enough. Direct flights, a plethera of lodging options, and plenty of sights to see (unless you are a complete beach bum like me) the beautiful islands are waiting for you to explore them. So, what are you waiting for? For more information, visit www.vistiusvi. com.

HEALTH

First-of-its-kind Study Reveals Differences In Cardiovascular Risk Factors Among U.S. Hispanics

By American Heart Association

R

amona Santana signed up right away when a woman came to her door to recruit her for a study about the health of U.S. Hispanics and Latinos. The 63-year-old has Type 2 diabetes and hopes researchers find a cure. “Almost everyone [I know] has diabetes,” said Santana, a retired factory worker who lives in the Bronx, New York. “We should at least allow that they search our immune system thoroughly so that they can find a cure for that disease, because it is very hard.” Santana takes pride in being part of the study. “Improving quality of health is improving the quality of life,” said Santana, a native of the Dominican Republic who moved to the United States 41 years ago. Her 80-year-old husband Miguel Santana also participates in the project, called the Hispanic Community Health Study/ Study of Latinos, or HCHS/SOL. For nearly a decade, dozens of cardiovascular researchers have benefited from health data provided by the Santanas and more than 16,000 other adults recruited for the National Institutes of Health-funded research project. Investigators sought participants of Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican, South American and Central American heritage for what is the first

long-term study to look exclusively at the health of the largest ethnic group in the United States. Nearly 80 percent of the participants, who were recruited in the Bronx, Chicago, San Diego and the Miami area, are immigrants from Latin America. Researchers at health centers in those cities are in the midst of collecting follow-up information about issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, surgeries, diet, exercise habits, income and education level. For scientists who study cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, the information has been a boon. It has allowed them to better understand how Hispanics of different

ethnicities are affected by problems that can lead to heart disease, the secondleading cause of death among U.S. Hispanics, and stroke, the fourth-leading cause of death among them. The project has also allowed researchers to compare the health of Hispanic immigrants with U.S.-born Hispanics. Most compelling have been the findings for diabetes and obesity, two of the leading risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show Hispanics are more likely than whites to have diabetes: 12 percent of Hispanics are diabetic compared with 8 percent of whites. But the rates among some

Hispanic ethnic groups appear to be much higher, based on studies using data from HCHS/SOL. Diabetes researcher Neil Schneiderman, Ph.D., the lead investigator at the HCHS/SOL Miami site, recently led a study that found adults of South American heritage have the lowest rate of diabetes. Only about 10 percent of them have diabetes compared with about 18 percent of persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican or Dominican background. The gap is on par with the prevalence difference between white and black Americans. Diabetes is almost twice as common among blacks compared with whites, CDC data show. “We have the same set of differences, same magnitude between one group of Hispanics and another,” said Schneiderman, a professor at the University of Miami’s College of Arts and Sciences. Also of concern is that many Hispanics are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, said Martha L. Daviglus, M.D., Ph.D., who is the principal investigator at the HCHS/SOL field center in Chicago. Daviglus co-authored a2014 report from the American Heart Association that was the first to describe the burden of heart disease and stroke among U.S. Hispanics.

Jeep Cherokee Overland Withstanding Every Tests

AUTO By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

O

range is Houston’s new color. You can’t go to too many places and not pass a construction zone with the orange barrels and signs directing you to slow down, stop and detour here. Having a vehicle with off-road capability is to your advantage to handle all the dips, dives, and divots on the beaten and battered streets. One with style and safety measures is a plus. Since that is my constant reality, I was more than happy to put the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 to the test against these rough Houston streets and Jeep was most certainly up for the challenge. Of all the vehicles in the Jeep brand lineup, the Grand Cherokee has been one that has stood out for its style and luxury appeal. Year after year it improves on that standard, elevating its overall draw exteriorly and internally. For the 2016 model year, Jeep does not make any real significant exterior changes. After all, they really don’t have to do that when you have a classic look that works but I suspect in a few years slight changes will appear just to stay within the current times. I am most attracted to its car-like look with its jeep-like size. It is almost like the scenario of the “Three Little Bears” story. It is not too big and not too small. It is just right. As the showman of the Jeep lineup, slight tweaks and changes are expected to the Grand Cherokee. Some of them are noticeable by sight while others are noticeable by experience behind the wheel. Jeep gives you both in 2016. Starting with the behindthe-wheel experience, Jeep sheds some weight with the exchange of aluminum suspension parts from steel ones. This, of course, improves fuel usage and performance. There are four engine options with the Grand Cherokee - 3-liter turbo, 3.6-liter V6, 5.7-liter V8, and 6.4-liter V8. My test vehicle was equipped with the 3.6 V6 engine that gave me fuel estimates of 18-mpg city, 25-mpg highway for a combined fuel economy of 21-mpg city/highway. With this engine,

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

more fuel efficiency is noticed with the upgraded start/ stop function that also enhances the horsepower of this all-around SUV. Two 4WD systems are available for the Overland trim level. Testing has the Overland V6 jumping from zero to 60-mph in less than 8 seconds. All of the above is great but what about the ride. Well, that is even better. The ride is what sets the Jeep apart from other SUVs. Going off-road in the Jeep doesn’t mean that you or your crew is tossed around like a rag doll in the cabin. Shock is absorbed by all the advance technology to produce a silky smooth ride with just the right amount of thrill seeker adventure even though you are riding on some pretty treacherous terrain. Shifting is not laborious as the shifter is

changed so drivers simply have to push forward to advance or pull back to reverse instead of the jerky step slot as before. It is great for everyday driving but when adventure calls the off-road capabilities are stellar. The Jeep Grand Cherokee ranks at the top of its class and its doesn’t matter too much with the engine

maximum towing capacity, navigation, 8.5-inch touchscreen, leather upgrades, backup camera, an advanced technology package with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert and a forward collision mitigation system with auto-

choice selected to get this kind of performance due to its advanced four-wheel drive system. There are five available trim levels for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Each having its own advantage type upgrades. My test model is sort of the middle of the road with the Overland trim level. Other options include the Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit and SRT. And one can’t forget the 75th anniversary edition in limited quantities. Standard options starting with the Laredo trim level include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, cruise control, foglights, keyless ignition and entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a six-speaker surround system with a 5-inch touchscreen a USB port and auxiliary audio jack. And that is the basic. One could easily be comfortable with the basic trim level but it is always good to spoil yourself at times. Moving up the class to the Overland level and one can see the additions and upgrades of 20-inch aluminum wheels, lower payload capacity, increased

Oct 20 - Oct 26 , 2016

matic braking and the list goes on. I found advanced technology really cool and helpful, as the vehicle will literally stop in its tracks to avoid a collision jerking the driver to a complete halt. The available high altitude package increases the style of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with a sports kit and black exterior accents. Comfort and convenience features are all over the place in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Controls in the instrument panel are clearly laid out for ease of use by both driver and passenger. My favs are the WiFi hotspot and smartphone app integration so that I was never disconnected. There was not a third row option and it was not missed because space is plentiful in the front and backseat. Usually, backseat passengers are short changed with options but not in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. They can take advantage of video entertainment in the headrest with Blu-ray options, connect devices with 12-volt power outlets, have control over heating and ventilation and take in the sights with the panoramic sunroof. What is not to love! Orange is usually a color reserved for cautious behavior but that can be thrown to the wind while in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4. This vehicle will keep you and your peeps safe, secure, comfortable, entertained and all for a great price. It is the best combination of what you need and what you like when practical life and skill seeker collide. Life is meant to be experienced and lived on your own terms and it is great when the rules don’t have to apply. Jeep lets you go there no matter what orange annoying roadblocks get in your way. Push caution to the extreme with the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 for a base price of $47, 395.00. Find out more information at your local Jeep dealer or visiting jeep.com.

The rally was organized by TSU’s Democratic Club. University student government representatives spoke at the event, including SGA President Justin Lee and Student Regent Tramauni Brock. T

he Houston Texans vs. Indianapolis Colts game was a nail bitter until the very end. But the Houston Texans pulled off another “W” in the win column overcoming a 14-point deficit with 7:04 remaining in the fourth quarter to win the game in overtime 26-23. Kicker Nick Novak made the first points and it was Novak who sealed the deal with a 33-yard field goal in overtime. The Texans have now earned their fifth straight regular season home win and extended their streak against AFC South opponents to seven games. The Texans recorded a season-high 414 total net yards (256 passing, 158 rushing), 26 first downs and 30:17 time of possession, while converting 5-of-11 (45%) third downs and 2-of-4 (50%) red zone opportunities.
