Muhammad Ali, Hero of Our Time

his weekend, the Muhammad Ali Center awarded football great and courageous civil rights advocate Jim Brown and Bill Russell its Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award. But the real celebration was for Muhammad Ali himself, a giant now weakened by his three decade struggle with Parkinson’s. Ali was a champion in the ring. “I am the greatest,” he said, and he was telling the truth. He won his first heavyweight championship at the age of 22, a massive underdog against reigning champion Sonny Liston. He said he would “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee,” and so he did. And later, as age diminished his speed, he showed a remarkable capacity to take a punch, even inventing what was called the “rope-a-dope” strategy against George Foreman. He is recognized as

to imagine a more costly sacrifice for a world champion. Ali responded not by getting bitter but by getting bigger. He spoke at colleges against the war and for African American pride and for racial justice. His courage inspired millions, including Dr. Martin Luther King. Before King delivered his historic Riverside Church address against the war, Ali and Jim Brown visited with Dr. King. He returned to the ring in GA in 1970, with the assistance of State Senator LeRoy Johnson, the lone African American in the State House. I was there that evening and had prayer with Ali -- what a night. He was victorious on a third round knockout over Jerry Quarry. Later, in 1971, when Ali’s conviction was overturned by a unanimous Supreme Court, he avenged a title match loss to Joe Frazier -- he fought three of the greatest fights ever with Joe Frazier. Three years later, against the odds, in “the Rumble in the Jungle,” against George Foreman in Kinshasha, Zaire, at the age of 32, he won back his title. By the time the fight was over, Ali was not simply a champion, but a HERO -- known across the world. Ali kept growing and living his beliefs. He helped deliver food to millions in Africa. He brought needed medical supplies to embargoed Cuba.

In the first Gulf War, he traveled to Iraq, met with its dictator Saddam Hussein, and worked to free 15 U.S. hostages. He did much of this even as he struggled with an increasingly debilitating Parkinson’s disease. Now Ali, once reviled, is hailed across the world. He was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and Sports Personality of the Century by the British BBC. President George W. Bush presented him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of this nation’s highest awards. The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville carries on his work for peace, social responsibility, respect and personal growth. Giants have big heart and immense courage. Champions show this on the field or in the ring. Heroes demonstrate this in the political and social life of their time. Athletic champions ride on the shoulders of others. Heroes provide the shoulders that others can ride on. Muhammad Ali is surely a transformative hero of our time. You can write to the Rev. the greatest fighter of his generation, and along with Joe Louis, of all time. But Ali was more than a remarkable champion in the ring; he became a hero outside the ring. He stood up to assert his rights, and used his prominence to fight for religious freedom and racial justice. He stood on principle against the fury of the crowd -- and sacrificed enormously for his beliefs. After defeating Liston, Ali announced his conversion to Islam, joining the Nation of Islam. In 1967, he refused a draft order to join the military in Vietnam, claiming conscientious objector status. He stated that “War is against the teachings of the Holy Qur’an. We don’t take part in Christian wars or wars of any unbelievers.” More succinctly he remarked that, “No Vietcong ever called me nigger.” “Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while socalled Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? This stance generated public venom, and official prosecution and conviction for draft avoidance. Ali was stripped of his title, his license to fight and his passport. In the prime of his athletic life, he went nearly four years without being able to fight. It is hard

elections for US Senate and Congress, statewide elected offices, state senate and all 150 state representatives and county positions including county commissioners, judges and constable but registration is required before voting. “To vote in Texas you must be registered to vote at least 30 days before the election date in the precinct or local area in which you intend to vote. To change your area, name or address, a completed and signed application is also required 30 days before the election which for the fall election would be this Monday October 6,” said Mike Sullivan, the Harris County tax assessor collector who also by state law also heads the office of voter registration in Harris County. “The qualifications to register to vote are you must be a United States citizen, resident of the country where

If you are currently living in Harris County but are registered to vote in another county, you must be registered to vote in Harris County 30 days prior to Election Day in order to vote in Harris County,” he said. Sankofa: Caravan to the Ancestors

S

unshine, a breeze, the sound of Djembi drums thumping in the background, birds chirping and upwards of 2oo beautiful brown faces singing best describes this sentinal event. This year the National Black United Front embark on its 17th annual Sankofa: Caravan to the Ancestors traveling from Houston to Galveston as they have done for over a decade. Sankofa is a word from the Akan people of West, Africa which means : Go Back To Your Past and bring to the present, past values needed now. Often the concept of Sankofa is symbolized by a mythical bird which moves forward while looking backward. Certain depictions of the Sankofa bird shows an egg being held within it’s beak symbolizing the

dps-issued

future of those yet to be born, if the egg is held too tight then it will break, if the egg is held too loose then it will fall. One must move forward while gaining wisdom from the past and exacting the proper balance in preparation for the future. The Caravan makes the Sankofa connection through prayer, ritual, African drumming and dancing, speakers and martial arts. Research reveals that Galveston beach was a port of entry for our enslaved African ancestors. The Moor Estevanico or Esteban came to the shores of Galveston as a servant, navigator and guide to Portuguese explorers in the year 1528. It is recorded that in the 1780 ‘s reports traffic in enslaved Africans flourished by way of Morgan’s Point across the bay from Galveston Island. This barbaric practice of profiting from human cargo was plentiful in Galveston for many years with slave traders skillfully circumventing laws banning the uncivilized practice. Further, Galveston, Texas is the place where General Gordon Granger delivered his decree of the emancipation of Africans held in slavery on these shores on June 19,

1865. Hence, the commemoration of the Juneteenth Holy Day. The spirit and history of our ancestors truly dwells in Galveston, therefore there are many values, which we can bring forth for our use today. In 1998, NBUF - Houston hosted the 18th National Black United Front National Convention; The theme of the convention was Sankofa. Planning for the convention , members suggested a retreat to Galveston. Research was done to uncover little known history of Afrikans in Galveston and Texas. A decision was made to hold an ancestral remembrance , including performing an IFA ritual in honor of our “Holy Afrikan Ancestors”. the location chose is near a market where our ancestors were bartered for and sold as chattel On the day of the 1st caravan. Professor James Small declared the day of remembrance to be a holy day that should be commemorated annually. A key part of the event is an actual police escorted caravan from Houston to Galveston As many as 100 vehicles have participated over the years. A decision was made later to move the actual date of the caravan to mid October for better weather conditions. October is also seen by many African descendants as the month of the Maafa or Afrikan Holocasut month. The Sankofa: Caravan to the Ancestors is open to all faith traditions and we urge attendees to wear white in support of African spiritual traditions. There will be two days of activities prior to the Ceremony in Galveston, which take place in Houston, Texas. This year’s festivities will take place from October 16th-18th. LGBT Pride Parade Moves to Downtown For years the LGBT Pride parade has been held in Houston’s Montrose area, however with growing popularity parade organizers feel that more space is needed. An announcement was made that the 2015

parade will be help in Downtown Houston to the disappointment of many. “The original purpose of Pride in the 1960s was to break down barriers and show that as an LGBT community we refused to be ignored. There is no longer a need for a segregated community in Houston. Therefore, the move downtown will help break additional barriers of inclusion and integration,” said Pride Houston President and CEO Frankie Quijano. The new location will allow the parade to showcase additional entertainers and more seating along parade route and a family fun zone. For more information, visit MyGayHouston. com/Pride-Festival.

No More Blue Days in the Toyota Rav4

lue was my color of the week. It was blue and gloomy outside. I was driving a 2014 Toyota Rav4 Limited AWD SUV in shoreline blue pearl ash. I may have been surrounded by blue however my mood was not blue. Raindrops might have been falling from the sky but tears were not falling from my face since I was all happy behind the wheel of the Toyota Rav4. Happy is almost an understatement when it comes to the Toyota Rav4. Ever since I first laid eyes on this sporty SUV I have always thought “that is one fun ride.” And I was so right! I love the compact, practical nature of this vehicle. It can easily fit the needs of an outgoing college student to a multi-tasking mom-on-the-go. Based price at a reasonable $29,720, the Toyota Rav4 gives the posh and style most crave with the price tag that doesn’t makes one scream. Materials used are high quality and durable so the buyer doesn’t feel cheated. The Toyota Rav 4 comes in three trims levels: LE, XLE and the top of the chain, Limited, which I was able to drive. The major difference between the trim levels is that the limited comes with heated adjustable driver and front passenger seats. A huge bonus if you are someone like me that hates to be cold. Space is ridiculous in this adequate. In the cargo area, with the second row up, I was able to fit three of the small pilot luggage bags in when on their sides. So one can imagine how much space there would be when touching the lever to let down the second row. Staying in the cargo area, I must thank Toyota for the power liftgate. This feature is so convenient when going to the grocery store or an

extended day of shopping and you are overloaded with bags. One push and the rear door automatically comes open. Click a second time and it closes. Plus it can be programmed to stop at certain heights for my vertically challenged friends. The dashboard is expertly laid out with all controls easily within the reach of the driver. All the controls, knobs and buttons are big enough for tiny or man-size hands. In the center console the Toyota Rav4 is equipped with dual zone climate control, Entune premium JBL audio with navigation system and app suite, backup camera, AM/FM/CD player with MP3/WMA, 11 JBL GreenEdgeTM Speakers in 7 locations, advanced voice recognition, hands-free phone capabilities, Bluetooth connectivity and more. Safety is always tops on Toyota’s list so best believe the Toyota Rav4 is chunked full of safety features. My review vehicle was equipped with the Star Safety System so it had enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist and smart stop technology. Something new to me was the whiplash-lessening seat, that was design just as the name suggests, to lessen the risk of whiplash in rear-end collision. There was also 8 airbags including one for the knee. Never knew how important that was until I was in a frontal collision in high school. I had pain in my knees for weeks following that wreck. Good thinking Toyota with the knee bag. I was able to rack up some miles since my city is so vast and I live on the outskirts of it. This really allowed me to get a good feel of the Toyota Rav4 on all types of terrain. I was thoroughly pleased in the handling of the Toyota Rav4. No matter whether I was on a gravel unpaved road, twisting to avoid pot-

holes, or swerving to avoid construction, the Toyota Rav4 handled every maneuver with ease. Since the Toyota RAV4 is a crossover vehicle it gives you the space of an SUV and the ride of a car so my entire trip was always smooth. The Toyota RAV4 comes with a 2.5L 16V 4cyclinder engine with dual VVT-1 in both frontwheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. My test vehicle was the awd configuration so my EPA had reduced fuel economy of 22-mpg city and 29mpg highway compared to the front-wheel with EPA of 24-mpg city and 31-mpg highway. Save even more on fuel when driving in the ECO mode. Air conditioning and driver’s speed is reduced while the sports mode kicks everything up a notch. The Toyota Rav4 is definitely a looker on the outside with the power moonroof, roof rails, rear spoiler, heated outside mirrors, and projector headbeams. It has a distinctive shape and curve appeal. If you can’t tell by now I am a fan of the 2014 Toyota Rav4 Limited AWD SUV. It is a thrill to drive as well as ride. Say good-bye to your blue days and welcome in the fun in the sun with the 2014 Toyota Rav4 Limited AWD SUV. Grab your Toyota Rav4 when you visit your local Toyota dealer or check it out online at Toyota.com.

Meet Team Style Mag

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

We are everywhere and they are never there. Meet the best team in the business. I introduce to you Team Style Mag!” Francis Page, Jr., Houston Style Magazine Publisher and Editor

Meet Jo-Carolyn Goode – Managing Editor

Putting pen to paper has always come naturally for me. As early as elementary school I was writing 24 verse poems. My passion for writing continued as I grew up writing for noteworthy publications in high school and college. It was after my college matriculation that I joined paths with Houston Style Magazine. I started out as an intern thinking it was just something to do for the summer - funny how that was almost eight years ago. Francis Page, Jr. has given me the opportunity to not just rub shoulders with celebrities to tell the stories of the person when the cameras are off but also to tell what keeps the heart beating of everyday Americans. I take pride in the part I play in shaping the future of journalism with the team I lead. Francis calls me Houston Style Magazine’s Silent Assassin because when you do good work there is no need to be loud. Follow me @bjmdaughter

Traditionally, Houston Style Magazine spoke to the African American community. I was brought on to be the voice of Hispanics, the new majority. This worked perfect for me as I was already established in my community as a tireless advocate providing service and leading various help-outreach initiatives. In addition, my experience is vast with partnering with the entertainment industry; as well as with national and international entrepreneurs, diverse businesses, and non-profit organizations. My Houston Style Magazine team knows me as Mama Lisa because they know I have their backs. Follow me @lolalissaa.

Meet Rebecca Briscoe – National Entertainment and Sports Reporter Meet Trevor G. Piper – Creative Director

I see things differently. As Creative Director I am the vision behind the covers of the print publication of Houston Style Magazine. My goal is to make every cover so visually appealing that you are not just compelled to pick it up, you MUST. In addition to my graphic and layout work for Houston Style Magazine, I am involved in other entities as dayandadream.com, huesoul. com, Space City Beat Battle and CEO of T.Piper Media Creative Agency. Follow me @tpipermedia

Meet Brandon Caldwell – Online Editor

I am Houston Style Magazine’s firecracker. I add a spark to whatever project I touch. Born in Houston, Texas, I have written for numerous publications including the Village Voice, the Houston Press, About, DJBooth, Refined Hype and more. I am now proud to say I have fulfilled a childhood dream of having my work in Vibe Magazine. I am also the Editor-in-Chief of dayandadream.com and a student at the University of Houston seeking a BA in Journalism. Follow me @_brandoc

Meet Lisa Valadez – Hispanic Managing Editor

Specializing in brand building and establishing successful PR campaigns, I connected with Houston Style Magazine when Francis Page, Jr. was looking to expand the voice of the publication.

Style Magazine (HSM). Francis Page, Jr. asked in his paper, who was going to replace that voice that challenged the system? When he got no response, he turned to me and said we still need that voice. It was an opportunity I could not pass up. Over the years, I have been writing columns for people on my listserv. Some of the columns ended up in other periodically. However, these columns very rarely appeared in any hometown periodical, and I felt a need for such to happen. Thus was born Lovell’s Food for Thought in HSM. The feedback I have gotten has been overwhelming positive. Michael Dunn Found Guilty for Death of Jordan Davis

Michael Dunn

J

Jordan Davis

urors found Michael Dunn guilty of first-degree murder Wednesday in the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. Dunn’s parents were in the courtroom for the verdict. Davis’ parents, Ron Davis and Lucia MacBath, both let out a quiet gasp upon hearing the jury forewoman’s words and then hung their heads and cried. Dunn did not appear to have an immediate reaction, but later, he turned around and somberly shook his head toward his father. Dunn, 47, was charged with murder after shooting into an SUV full of teenagers at a Jacksonville, Florida, gas station following a squabble over the music emanating from the teens’ vehicle. Outside the courtroom, Davis’ mother expressed her gratitude for a verdict she said represented justice not only for her son but for “Trayvon and for all the nameless faces and children and people that will never have a voice.” She was referring to Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teenager killed earlier

12

the same year by a neighborhood watch captain who was acquitted in the death. “Words cannot express our joy but also our great sorrow because ... we know that Jordan has received his justice,” she said. “We know that Jordan’s life and legacy will live on for others, but at the same time, we’re very saddened by the life that Michael Dunn will continue to live. We are saddened for his family, for his friends and the community that will continue to suffer by his actions.” Florida ‘loud music’ case back on trial Jurors speak out on ‘loud music’ verdict Juror breaks her silence on Dunn trialJuror: Dunn trial wasn’t about race The victim’s father said the verdict made Jacksonville “a shining example that you could have a jury made of mostly white people, white men,” that delivers justice in a racially charged case. “Hopefully,” Davis said, “this is a start where we don’t have to look at the makeup of a jury anymore.”

October 2 - October 8 , 2014

www.StyleMagazine.com

Prosecutor Angela Corey said Dunn faces a life term along with a minimum of 25 to life for using a firearm. “It’s a vindication for justice,” she said of the verdict. “We believe that we have to have as much justice as we can to assure that Michael Dunn will never ever walk out of a prison.” Duval County Judge Russell Healey set a tentative sentencing hearing for October 17 but said he would wait until Tuesday to ensure the date worked for Dunn’s defense attorneys. “This has been going on for two years, and everyone has acted graciously. I ask that you continue to do that,” Healey said before the verdict was read. “Remember, we must respect the verdict of the jury. They did not volunteer to do this.” Dunn has said he shot at the vehicle because he thought Davis had a weapon and feared for his life, but the prosecution has alleged Dunn was the aggressor and pointed out he kept firing even after the teens fled. Three of the 10 shots that Dunn fired struck Davis, one of them cutting through his liver, a lung and his aorta. Investigators say Davis never had a weapon, nor was one found in the teens’ SUV or the surrounding area. A jury found Dunn guilty of four charges in February, commanding at least 60 years in prison, but the jury was hung on the murder charge related to Davis’ November 2012 death. Jurors began deliberating on the new charges just before 10 a.m. ET on Wednesday, after Healey dismissed two of the three alternates and provided instructions for the charges jurors were to consider. The first charge to consider, Healey said, was first-degree murder, which would require that Dunn premeditated killing Davis. If the jury didn’t feel the state proved first-degree murder, it was instructed to move on to second-degree, which would mean Dunn killed Davis via a criminal or depraved act. The third charge was manslaughter, which would require a finding that Dunn unlawfully caused Davis’ death. Juror: ‘Race was never a factor’ Killing Davis was lawful, Healey told the jury, if Dunn acted in the heat of passion or if he unintentionally caused Davis’ death. The jury could also find Dunn not guilty if he was in danger, acted in self-defense and exacted a justifiable use of force, the judge instructed. Dunn was convicted in February on one count of shooting into a vehicle and three counts of attempted second-degree murder -- one each for Davis’ friends, Leland Brunson, Tommie Stornes and Tevin Thompson, who were in the Dodge Durango with Davis that day. Juror: ‘I believed he was guilty’ The Satellite Beach, Florida, man hasn’t been sentenced on those charges, but prosecutor Eric Wolfson said at the time of the conviction that each attempted second-degree murder charge carries a minimum sentence of at least 20 years. There’s also a 15-year sentence possible on the conviction for shooting at the teenager’s vehicle, Wolfson said.

HEALTH

Got Abs?

By Jade Gold, Fitness Writer

I

f I could collect a $1.00 for every time someone says, “Why can’t I see my abs” when I’m in the gym all the time. Or, “I like my body as it is, I just need to work on my abs.” And the all time favorite, “I don’t think I need to diet to see my abs, I’ll just double my crunches and sit-ups.” Can you say MILLIONAIR status! Oh, the woes of a trainer for the client that comes and thinks they know it all. Well, let’s get down to the scientific truth of why none of these excuses are not valid and the truth that will set your abs free! You refuse to limit frequent alcohol consumption You are less likely to care what you’re eating when you’re drinking since your inhibitions are lowered, so your dietary discipline goes out the window. If you drink all night, you tend to stay out late, and the quality of your sleep is affected negatively. Now you’re less likely to adhere to your training schedule or if you do show up, your workout quality is compromised. Chronic alcohol consumption reduces testosterone, strains the liver and tends to shut down fat burning, none of which are particularly favorable to attaining that six pack. Calories from alcohol are ‘empty calories’ and they have no nutritional value.

Most alcoholic drinks contain traces of vitamins and minerals, but not usually in amounts that make any significant contribution to our diet. Drinking alcohol also reduces the amount of fat your body burns for energy. While we can store nutrients, protein, carbohydrates, and fat in our bodies, we can’t store alcohol. So our systems want to get rid of it, and doing so takes priority. All of the other processes that should be taking place (including absorbing nutrients and burning fat) are interrupted. Wine is often consumed at dinnertime alongside Jade Gold a meal but did you know that a large glass of wine (250ml) with 13% ABV can add 228 calories. With approximately 5 glasses per bottle, for those of you kicking back your own bottle on a Saturday night, you sipped down a whopping 1,140 Calories! You have unrealistic expectations clients often come with the right intent of wanting to change their body and their health, but miss the mark on setting the right time frame expectations. Your body does not want to

change. It would like very much to remain the same. For you to bring out a change in your physique, you had better threaten your body with extinction. You can’t just give up every time things get challenging in the gym. If the process were easy, if it didn’t take time, effort and dedication, everyone would be in perfect health. Allow your self the mental wherewithal and the physical time needed to process what you’re taking your mind and body through. In the end the process is priceless to a long lasting changing in all areas of you life. The Jumper You jump from one program to another, one excuse to another, one trainer to another, and one gym program to another. Stop jumping in an out of programs before you give yourself the real opportunity to make change. Choose to be dedicated to one program for set time period, one trainer for a set time period and committed to the process. If in fact you see something isn’t working for you, or not enjoying the workouts or your seeing results, at least you have giving any given program, method or trainer the opportunity to yield the results. No matter what, something should be dif-

ferent in the first 30 days, but nothing is transformed or fixed in that amount of time. Hormones & Genetics I’m often asked can anyone have a 6-pack and truth is no. If you are honestly doing everything right and you’ve got it all dialed in, and nothing will budge, then you may have a hormone imbalance. Hormones override everything. But most of the time, this is the excuse people will use for their current state and in truth they really haven’t put forth 100% effort in their training process both in the gym and in their meal plans/ diet. If your genuinely suspecting this is an issue, a simple blood test will determine if this is the reason behind your lack of progress. As for genetics some people have a tendency to store more body fat, while others tend to remain lean, regardless of diet. Some people can display impressive abs definition at 1215% body fat, while others need to get to 6-8%. Some people seem to have the gift of endless abs while others of us (myself included) really have to work at it with strict diets and consistence in the type of workouts performed. Genetics play a significant roll in how our bodies develop, what are result maybe and having the right training program for your body type is key to the best possible outcome and results. Savannah Rose Punch Causes a Ruckus

t’s a known fact that one of the most powerful elements on earth is water, because all living things depend on this element. However, who knew that when wedding caterer Brenda Powell added tea and a host of secret ingredients to a pitcher of water that a beverage so delicious would have H-E-B judges demanding more? That’s exactly what happened when Savannah Rose Punch was entered into H-E-B’s Quest for Texas Best competition. This primo beverage is the creation of Brenda Powell, who is a veteran in the catering business, a former postal worker, and entrepreneur. According to Powell, during one of many catering events, she grew tired of the same old sweet tea, and the waste that followed because there would always be an excessive amount left un-served. She went into the kitchen and just started grabbing things and mixed up a pitcher of punch that had the guests continuously asked for refills. After that day, and perfecting her recipe, Powell started serving this newly created beverage at all of her catered events. Almost every occasion after introducing this punch, Powell received numerous compliments from guests that were of various ages, sizes

and ethnicities. Moreover, Powell said that almost every person who had a glass of the punch would keep insisting on how they could not seem to get enough of it. Consequently, 12 years have passed since Savannah Rose Punch made its debut and it was Powell’s son who insisted that she enter here concoction into H-E-B’s competition. Powell stated that her son is a loyal customer of H-E-B, and was not surprised that the liquid goodness made it to the top 25 of products selected to the final round of judging. Currently, Powell is working on packaging and distribution details of the Savannah Rose Punch while working vigorously in her busy catering business. She has 25 employees, two on-site chefs, and steady work with the City of Kingwood, local churches, schools and hospitals. Office Design Concepts Donates Furniture to Bee Busy’s New MOVE Center

O

ffice Design Concepts, LLC, a leader in the field of office design and construction covering the greater Houston area and Dallas metroplex, and avid supporter of HIV awareness, has made a generous furniture donation to Bee Busy, Inc. This much needed donation will be used to outfit Bee Busy’s new MOVE Center, a safe haven for same-gender-loving young people who may have been displaced or feel they don’t belong as a result of

their sexual orientation or gender identity. The MOVE Center is a facet of the MOVE Project which seeks to foster unity within the diverse subcultures of minority gay community, create networking opportunities and serve as a resource for linkage to businesses and services that welcome all parts of the community. For more than a decade, Bee Busy has worked tirelessly to help the community by providing free HIV testing, counseling and linkage

to care; distributing free condoms; and presenting health education to adolescents and young adults. “The donated furniture could not have come at a better time. As a free and safe place our resources are very limited, and up until now the Center was unfurnished,” Darcy Padgett, Executive Director, Bee Busy, Inc. said. “Office Design Concepts provided the help we needed by donating every table, every chair, every couch, desk and other items. They completely furnished our Center.” Office Design Concepts’ president and CEO Joseph Sylvan believes that this donation is an extension of the community service philosophy that is the foundation of his company. “I admire Bee Busy’s commitment and dedication,” said Sylvan. “The need is so great and I wanted to be a part of making a difference. I believe the MOVE Center has the potential to make a major impact.” About Bee Busy: Bee Busy Learning Academy, Inc. (Bee Busy) is a 501 (c) (3) community based, non-profit organization providing testing, prevention services and linkage to care throughout Houston. Bee Busy’s mission is to build strong, healthy communities by enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families in vulnerable, at-risk populations. Our goals are to increase the awareness of HIV/STIs, increase the number of persons who know their HIV status through rapid HIV/STI screenings, reduce the transmission of HIV and provide timely linkage to care and treatment for HIV positive people.

It’s a question you’ve asked yourself while you’re thinking about your start-up. How can your business get a leg-up on success? The answer, says Thiel, is that it can’t… unless it invests “in the difficult task of creating new things…” The way to do that is not with a Me-Too business, but with technology, which is “miraculous.” Think about it: since mid-20th century, “only computers and communications have improved dramatically….” While there’s a lot of conflicting tenets in business, one key to building a “valuable company” is to figure out what nobody is doing, and do it. Another key is to create a monopoly, but not the illegal kind. Instead, you

16

want “the kind of company that’s so good at what it does that no other firm can offer a close substitute.” That is the mark of a successful business but, to achieve it, you must know what a good one looks like. Then, start small and scale up carefully. Don’t underestimate the competition, but don’t pay it too much heed, either; the danger is that competition “can make people hallucinate opportunities where none exist.” When founding your start-up, hire people who enjoy working together – people you like, and that are alike in their interests. Much like a marriage, pick partners and board members carefully. Ward off instability by establishing who owns the company, who runs it, and who governs it. Know how to quash competition within your workplace. Remember that you are a salesman. And then start looking for secrets. They’re everywhere, and they’ll be the basis of your new business… Just before you open the cover of “Zero to One,” have a baseball glove ready. There’s a lot of info lobbed at you here – fast – and you’ll want to catch every bit of it. The interesting thing, however, is that this isn’t so much a book

of advice as it is a book of thought-pokers. Building a successful start-up is not to be taken lightly, as author and PayPal founder Peter Thiel (with Blake Masters) subtly warns. There are dozens of things to understand, pitfalls to avoid, boxes to check when founding a business, and the authors don’t mince words when discussing them. That kind of caution – a demand to think first - is invaluable for all future moguls. And if that’s where your aim lies, then this book will give you plenty to ponder. Just clear your calendar a bit, and grab “Zero to One” because you can do it.
