en. Bernie Sanders, the Democratic candidate for president, shocked people when he noted that 51 percent of African-Americans aged 17-20 who have graduated high school or dropped out of high school are unemployed. PolitiFact.com confirmed the statement as “mostly true,” suggesting that the numbers might even be worse than Sanders suggested. This level of unemployment is a death sentence for a generation -- representing for too many the dying of hope, of potential and even, in an age of mass incarceration, of freedom. The figure is shocking, but the reality cannot be denied. For
Separate and Impoverished all the progress we have made on race in this country, there is still a stark difference between black and white poverty. As Emily Badger reports in the Washington Post, “The poverty that poor African-Americans experience is often different from the poverty of poor whites.” A poor black family is much more likely to live in an impoverished neighborhood. The concentrated poverty, as Badger writes, “extends out the door of a family’s home and occupies the entire neighborhood around it, touching the streets, the schools, the grocery stores.” A new report on the “Architecture of Segregation” by Paul Jargowsky for the New Century Foundation details the stark differences that exist in cities across the country. In metropolitan Chicago, for example, more than one in three poor African-Americans live in what are called high-poverty census tracts (neighborhoods where the poverty rate is above 40 percent). That is 10 times the rate for poor whites. And it has gotten worse, not better, in cities across the country over the course of this century. Separate and impoverished.
We know the effects. Infants suffer bad nutrition, grow up surrounded by lead paint. Children navigate mean streets to go to impoverished schools. They lack after-school and summer programs. Families break apart. Guns and drugs come in; jobs go out. There’s no affordable transportation to get to where the jobs are. Houses are abandoned. Hospitals close. Decent grocery stores are nowhere to be found. As Jargowsky says, this isn’t really an accident. It is the product of systemic discrimination, of zoning laws that shield off wealthy areas from the poor, of public housing that is concentrated in a few neighborhoods. Isolation in poor neighborhoods is an imposition, not a choice. This could be different. In London, for example, every region must have some social housing for poor and working class people. Imagine if every suburb were required to provide a proportionate amount of housing for the poor and the lower-wage workers. Suddenly the poor would have access to better schools, better health care, safer streets, more role models and
healthier (and less expensive) food stores. This takes a plan, a plan that will meet great resistance. Dozens of Chicago’s wealthy suburbs, Badger notes, have ignored state deadlines to produce affordable housing plans. Poor African-Americans are penned up, in poor neighborhoods and too often literally in jails and prisons. This is an imposition, not a fate, a policy choice that is morally indefensible and socially explosive. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush. org. Follow him on Twitter @ RevJJackson. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

Early Vote Marches On With Close Contests at Stake
ens of thousands of Houston area voters cast votes by Wednesday morning in contests considered the closest for mayor, city council, controller, school board and college trustee in decades. Early voting runs through Friday, October 30th at 41 locations across Harris County. Throughout Harris County 34,348 votes were already in the can including 18,283 in person and 16,065 through mail. With the first open mayor and controller races in six years and contested races in 13 out of 16 city council contests turnout the first day dramatically trumped Monday what it was for any city election in years. West Gray Multi Service Center near Montrose starred Monday with 844 voters and 819 voters Tuesday this year compared to 518 voters and 540 voters the first day in 2009 and 2013. West Gray beat everywhere else fueled strongly by the anti-gay and transgender discrimination law called HERO being contested there which is near one of the country’s loudest gay communities. Spring Branch Trini Mendenhall has been the second busiest early voting site so far this year featuring Monday 472 voters and Tuesday 589
compared to 261 and 256 voters the first day in 2009 and 2013. Spring Branch Republicans are an exhaustive group working to get out their vote in an area that for the last 20 years has been increasingly Hispanic but consistently conservative. Kingwood Library is the third busiest voting location with 432 voters turning out Monday and 626 casting ballots Tuesday compared to 120 and 168 the first day in 2009 and Adrian Garcia, Sylvester Turner, Bill King 2013. Keep Your Trick-or-Treaters Safe and Seen on Halloween

ew holidays delight kids more than Halloween. At the same time, Halloween generates significant worry in parents and with sound reason. Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for young pedestrians. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than twice as many children are killed in pedestrian/vehicle incidents on Halloween between 4-10 p.m. compared to the same hours on the other days of the year. Why are Halloween pedestrian fatalities so high? For more than 70 percent of kids who trick-or-treat door to door, it’s due to a dangerous combination of reduced daylight, preoccupied and unaccompanied kids in the streets, and bulky costumes that often make it difficult for oncoming drivers to see them. The child safety experts at Safe Kids Worldwide urge parents to add adhesive reflective tape to Halloween costumes, but this material is expensive and often of low quality. Without sufficient time and distance to react, many drivers may see a pedestrian too late to avoid them. “Most self-adhesive reflective material on the market is not only difficult to find, it is also of the cosmetic or low-brightness variety, which is only effective at very short distances and only if used in sufficient quantities,” said Chuck Gruber,

Proper placement of reflective material can also have an impact on safety. Gruber recommends 360-degree (front, back and sides, including limbs) coverage for Halloween costumes, with reflective material placed at biomotion points, such as wrists, ankles, hands, feet and shoulders. “The brain is hard-wired to distinguish human motion quickly, so when a driver sees reflective in the shape of a human, there is less time spent wondering what he’s seeing and more time to react and avoid a collision,” Gruber said. Parents can’t remove all potential dangers from their kids’ lives, but they can take steps to ensure that the only scary part about Halloween is seeing vampires. And maybe the dentist. alloween’s around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: costumes, carvings and handfuls of candy! But with every bit of trick-or-treat fun, we must remember to keep safety first. Many parents have given their children cell phones to stay connected in case of an emergency. It’s a good time for parents to talk with their trick-or-treaters about safety. Teach them useful safety features on their devices in case of emergency. Below are some tips and apps to make Halloween safe and fun for the whole family. •Use your cellphone as a flashlight Keeping your trick-or-treaters safe as darkness falls is equally as important as ensuring Halloween fun for all. Free flashlight applications (apps) for iPhone and Android devices use the LED light on smartphones and fill your screen with bright white light to illuminate the dark. Some even include fully customizable special effects including Strobe Light, Trippy, S.O.S., Yin-Yang, Halloween, Candy Hearts, Holiday Lights and more! •Keep track of your children while they’re on the go •A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children trick-or-treating.

Older children should go in groups and agree on a time when they should return home. For extra safety precaution, parents can track their children via the Life360 or GPS Phone Tracker Pro apps, which allows family members to alert one another when they’ve arrived at a destination, follow each other’s movements with minute-by-minute updates and real-time check-ins. Mobile Device Tips Pre-program one-touch dial emergency phone numbers in your child’s device in case of emergency. These numbers should include parents, 911, grandparents, trusted friend or neighbor Inform them not to respond or send personal information to numbers they don’t recognize If your child’s cell phone has access to the internet, find out if your service provider offers some sort of parental control feature to which you can subscribe Now that cellphone safety tips have been laid

out for your children and tweens, below are a few additional safety measures parents should keep top of mind for a fun and safe trick-or-treating experience: Buy costumes and wigs labeled “flame resistant.” Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. •Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. •Go only to well-lit houses, remain on porches rather than entering houses and stay in familiar neighborhoods. Cedric The Entertainer Tackles Diabetes in Houston With Step On Up Campaign
By Cecilia Smith, Special to Style
Cedric the Entertainer
W
hile he may forever be known to most as one of the “Original Kings of Comedy,” whether it be The Steve Harvey Show or his hilarious turn in Barbershop, there’s little that comedian and actor Cedric the Entertainer hasn’t already accomplished. Now he’s added spokesman to his already impressive resume, using his massive platform to inform others about the dangers of diabetic nerve pain (also known as “diabetic peripheral neuropathy) through a campaign called “Step On Up”. Though you’ve probably seen the commercials, off-screen it’s a condition incredibly near to his own heart, as it’s one his own father once struggled against. Joining the cause in 2014 he immediately teamed up with Step On Up, an informational program designed to spread education and awareness for those currently living with the condition. For Cedric, it’s an all too familiar struggle that unfortunately millions of others suffer from, often in silence. He explained, “My father has type 2 diabetes and suffers from diabetic nerve pain. That was my motivation. People who have diabetes often will not know that it’s associated. It’s the kind of thing, the burning and shooting pain that many just write off as ‘Oh, I’m just tired.’ A lot of people self-diagnose themselves instead of getting the proper care.” He added, “My dad is the typical male. He’s a golfer and very active. We watched him come up with excuses as to why he suddenly didn’t have the energy for his favorite activities. For him it was, ‘I’ll just run

it off.’ That’s the thing, so many of us don’t want to go to the doctor, but early detection is important in treating these symptoms.” Those unfamiliar with the disease may first be struck by burning, shooting pain, often unaware that it’s directly related to diabetes. Fortunately, these painful symptoms are manageable, but proper diagnosis and treatment is of course essential. Thankfully for Ced, it’s a lesson that worked out in the end. He went on to say, “He’s doing so much better now, right back to doing what he loves, but the minority community, in particular, needs to know that this disease affects them in greater numbers. So it’s important that we have these discussions and go get yourself checked out.” Currently, the entertainer himself is hitting the road for a series of sessions designed to encourage others to “step on up,” in order to seek pain relief. On October 17th, he joined the American Diabetes Association’s annual EXPO in Houston to discuss the various symptoms and manifestations of the disease. In addition to lending his voice for a great cause, he’s still found time to hone his own craft. In addition to his dapper hat line, currently available at www.WhoCed.com; fans can also expect the return of his wildly successful TV Land comedy Soul Man, which he serves as co-creator. We can also expect Barbershop 3 to finally hit theaters next Spring. Yes! For more information regarding the Step On Up campaign, please visit www.diabetespainhelp.com.

ylvester Turner is no stranger to Houston. Born and raised in Houston’s Acres Homes he is a modern success story that came from meager means and went on to the halls of Harvard Law. Once successful he didn’t turn his back on his community. He rolled up his sleeves to make the lives of those that came behind him better. First fighting as a lawyer for what’s right then helping to craft laws against injustices and now he stands ready to be the head of a Metropolitan city all with that one goal of helping people in the forefront of his mind. Why does Sylvester Turner want to be Houston’s next mayor? Because Houston is a great city and he believes he is the best man to keep Houston moving in a positive direction. Noting his vast experience of being a partner in a lucrative law firm for 32 years, Texas legislator for 26 years and a law professor for 17 years, Turner has the knowledge that matches up to tackle the city’s challenges. Top issues on that list if elected for Turner include the three p’s – potholes, pension, and public safety. The veteran legislature wants to implement a 24-hour road maintenance plan, similar to the one already running in Harris County. Programs like his Road to the Future will train workers

for careers in road repair while growing Houston’s business company and adding to the economy. With more trained workers streets can get repaired faster reducing the frustrations of motorists. Pensions have been a hot button issue and are not something that will be fixed overnight. Understanding that, Turner knows that it will take local control to attempt to a get a handle on the issue by being transparent. He proposes
that city officials have an all hands and eyes look at Houston’s financial outlook now and going forward before anything real can be done in Austin. It is through these talks with local officials that city finances can be examined with keen eye and work can begin to establish some common ground. Everyone wants to live in a city where they are safe and sound. That takes a partnership with authorities
and the residents of the city so why not form a noteworthy collaboration. Turner’s point exactly. With his Partners in Safety program, Turner will increase the number of Houston Police officers by 6,000 in the next five years. With more officers covering more of the city they can engage the community to build a rapport and trust and neighbors can put names with faces. Along with the new relationship, Turner wants to make sure officers are equip with body cameras to go along with transparent policing to increase that trust with public interactions and allow officers to go through cultural training to better understand citizens. It is because of Turner ’s hometown upbringing and work within the law that he really understands this city and Houstonians. And why he has worked so hard to make lives of so many better. This has allowed him to learn more, so he does more, and so we all can grow. So he advises don’t look to the Turner that ran for mayor in 1991 and 2003 but look to the Turner of the day. Who has been rehearsing to take on the real deal right now. If Turner is your man for Houston cast your vote early now and on November 3rd. For more information, visit www.sylvesterturner.com.

BOOK REVIEW
Y By Terri
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
our numbers weren’t picked last night. Ah, another worthless lottery ticket. No shopping spree or mortgage payoff for you. You’ll have to go to work and get your incredible wealth just like everybody else. Or, as you’ll read in “Prince of Darkness” by Shane White, you could become rich the oldfashioned way: through grift. Though he showed up in New York City in the wake of scandal, nobody knew for sure where Jeremiah G. Hamilton had come from. Some sources said he was born in the Caribbean - which he admitted to, but he also claimed Richmond, Virginia, as his first home. Nobody knew, though, because Hamilton, an African American man, spent most of his adult life hiding facts and creating fiction. Wherever he got his start, Hamilton launched himself early: in 1828, and “barely into his twenties,” he was involved in a counterfeit scam in Haiti that would’ve meant death, had he been caught. With the help of locals, however, he escaped and arrived in “Gotham,” but not without notice: newspapers of the day splashed the story, but Hamilton managed to keep mum on who’d helped him. Almost immediately, he started borrowing money in a “frenetic, almost desperate” way, money he had

Prince of Darkness: The Untold Story of Jeremiah Hamilton, Wall Street’s First Black Millionaire no intention of paying back, which ultimately landed Hamilton in court: there were at least ten lawsuits against him between 1830 and 1835, and there may’ve been more. Then came The Great Fire of 1835 in which “dozens of acres” of Manhattan were burned to the ground, along with the records of several businessmen who’d been convinced to invest with him. Hamilton denied the transactions, kept their $25,000, and gained the moniker of “Prince of Darkness.” For the rest of his life – even after being forced to declare bankruptcy - Hamilton always landed on his feet, “shunned” other African Americans, and even invested in companies that overtly practiced racism. He died in 1875 in a “comfortable and elegant” residence he shared with his white wife and family. So why are history books silent on Hamilton’s story? That’s a question author Shane White had, after he discovered Hamilton’s name and began digging. Could it have been due to the color of Hamilton’s skin? It’s possible, White says, but in “Prince of Darkness,” he also indicates that the lack of documentation may’ve been because Hamilton rankled white financiers and investors, and didn’t appear to care that he’d done so. That insouciance, in light of the racism that Hamilton surely endured, would be an interesting story itself but White

embellishes the tale with an abundance of history and extensive biographies of other influential people of Hamilton’s time. That’s good – to a point – but it occasionally can also makes this book deadly dull. I found my mind wandering much more than I might’ve liked. So is this book worth reading? I think so, but you may want to give it a rest now and then to regenerate yourself. Start it, take a break, repeat as necessary and you might find “Prince of Darkness” to be just the ticket. ith the recent announcement of revised breast cancer screening guidelines that lean toward a later and less frequent approach for average risk women, some may be confused about what screening plan path to take. Experts from the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine offered advice to help sort through the confusion. “The American Cancer Society guideline changes relate only to those women of average risk,” said Dr. Emily Sedgwick, director of breast imaging in the Smith Breast Center. “Women with known risk factors do not fall into this group and should follow a different screening plan as recommended by their doctors.” Understanding your risk Bottom line, every woman should take a proactive role in knowing and understanding their risk for breast cancer. “Unfortunately, three out of four women I diagnose with breast cancer have no risk factors,” Sedgwick said. It is important to note the revised guidelines said women between the ages of 40 – 44 have the choice to start annual mammograms if they wish to do so. Those known risk factors include: •Women with a strong family history –
Making Sense of Revised Breast Cancer Screenings Guidelines first degree relative such as a mother, daughter, sister •Known genetic mutation such as the BRCA gene •Previous breast biopsy or abnormal mammogram •Early menstrual cycle (starting at 11 years or younger) •Being overweight •Having a dense breast tissue on mammogram It has been shown that women who have dense tissue on their mammograms are at least four times more likely to develop breast c a n c e r. I f a woman does not receive her screening mammogram at age 40, she would not know if she was at increased risk of developing breast cancer. A link to the new guidelines, announced by the American Cancer Society yesterday, can be found online here. The group calls for screening to start at age 45 for average risk women and continue annually through age 55. Patients may choose to have an annual exam or every other year
after age 55. Women should continue to have mammograms as long as they are in good health. Women with a family history should start screening 10 years younger than the diagnosis age of the first relative. For example, if mother was diagnosed at 40, daughter should begin at age 30. The younger women issue Younger women are still diagnosed with breast cancer, which is a constant source of confusion surrounding screening guidelines. It’s important to know the facts, Sedgwick said. “ M o s t w o m e n who are diagnosed are postmenopausal,” she said. “But about 25 to 30 percent of women are diagnosed below the age of 50 which is a significant number of women.” It is important to talk to you doctor and make a decision when to start, she said. “The issue with younger women and early screenings is that they tend to have more false positives,” said
Sedgwick. “False positives may lead to more follow up tests including additional mammograms, biopsies, MRIs and ultrasounds. This testing, even if normal, can be psychologically stressful for some time to come. We overcome some of that anxiety by providing same day mammography work-up and biopsy at the Smith Breast Center.” Sedgwick said the introduction of new technology, such as the three dimensional mammography screening, reduces false positives, which can be a particular problem in younger women with dense breast tissue. “The issue of cancer screening guidelines and constant revisions is heavily reported in the news,” said Sedgwick. “I encourage women to understand their own risk of developing breast cancer and to work with a physician who can help them understand. A physician can help you make sense of what may be misleading information reported on a very important topic.” The Smith Breast Center is a major component of the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor, an NCIDesignated Comprehensive Cancer Center. For more information, visit www.bcm.edu.

Big Belly’s Burger: A Place Where Your Taste Buds Beg for More By Bell of TotallyRandie
I
f you know me then you know I love cheeseburgers! If Burger King had a “Burger Queen” then she would be me. You name it; I have tried it. From all the national chains like McDonalds, Burger King, Whataburger, etc. to Five Guys, In N Out, Champ, Sparkle, Miller, and Smashburger to portabella veggie cheeseburgers Leonard’s, a plethora of foodtruck burgers, including the famous doughnut burger and Waffle Bus Cheeseburger - I’ve even had a goat cheeseburger in Europe! Yes you can call me the “Bubba Gump” of cheeseburgers. Having had so many cheeseburgers when I crave one it is hard for one to really blow my mind, especially when I am really in the mood for one. When I want a good juicy cheeseburger with everything on it! Sometimes it leaves me disheartened. One day I took my problems to Facebook, only to have to face my problems. Every suggestion I received did nothing for me because I had already been there. Then around noon, when my amazing boyfriend called me and said, “Why don’t we make our own cheeseburgers? We could periscope it, make our own recipe, we could even use ground turkey instead for healthier options.” How could I refuse? The more I thought about it the more creative ideas began to flow. I could record it as well for my YouTube show “Its National Day,” talk about how I didn’t want to revisit a spot so shopping and making it a cool date night was definitely the way to go. Then I received the tweet “Have you ever been to Big Belly’s?” Ugh! I thought I hadn’t been there. I can’t lie on camera so I decided to go visit to say I’ve been, get one customers reaction and return to business as usual. However, the burger world had other plans for me. First, before even sinking my teeth inside of one of their exquisite burgers I noticed that the atmosphere was extremely millennial conducive. At every table there were charging stations (USB compatible), TVs from every angel, and football paraphernalia everywhere! I felt like I was back in college. After going back and forth, the manager, Howard, convinced me to try their signature burger. The burger was the circumference of my hands side-by-side. That’s the only possible way to describe the monstrosity that set in front of me. Paired with seasoned fries and watermelon Kool-Aid, this Big Belly Burger (knife in center) with lettuce, pickles, onions, mustard, mayo, ketchup, and of course cheese, took me back to childhood. I began to smile as I cut a triangle out of the burger and made myself “A piece of burger” to intake. As I looked over the meat I could see the seasonings as I glanced over at Howard’s smiling face. “We grind our meat to perfection with our seasonings, its like meatloaf on a bun,” he said with cocky grin, as he knew my taste buds were in for a rare treat. I took a bite, and immediately understood. meatloaf on a bun. As big as the burger was (1 pound after cooking), you would think the meat would be dry and the bun soggy. No so. It was the juiciest, most seasoned burger I had ever tasted that wasn’t literally made in a home. The toasted bun was soft where needed. The toppings were fresh and crisp. I immediately hopped on Periscope! I had to tell everyone about Houston’s hidden gem located in Beyonce’s old neighborhood of 3rd Ward! If you haven’t been to Big Belly’s I suggest you go ASAP! If cheeseburgers aren’t your thing, don’t worry; Big Belly’s caters to its fans with chicken burgers, wings, jalapeno bombers, boneless wings, potato skins, fried fish, coconut shrimp, and now Cajun boiled shrimp. Stop by for a burger or Monday Night Football! Either way it’s a win, win! Share this story online at www.stylemagazine.com or follow them on Twitter @bigbellysbrgr.
