COMMENTARY

Wall Street’s Lack of Diversity

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

all Street may lead America in financial rewards but it is a laggard when it comes to diversity. The lack of diversity among its CEOs and managing partners is notorious. Now a survey by Vettery, a recruiting firm, reports that the Street fails the test among its first year hires as well. It isn’t only skewed at the top; it is failing to build the pipeline that might change that in the future. Vittery reports that first year bankers are more than 3/4 men -- unchanged from 2013 -- and nearly 2/3 white. 29 percent are Asian, while African Amerians and Hispanics make up a paltry 6 percent. Sallie Krawcheck, former executive of Citibank and Bank of America who now runs the women’s network Ellevate, concludes that banks went into the financial crisis “white, male and middle aged” and came out

are to be broken down. One question is whether the government will begin to investigate these patterns, enforcing equal opportunity laws, engaging the SEC regulatory powers and more. Wall Street should be particularly targeted for tough regulation. Their excesses blew up the economy. They got bailed out, while homeowners were left to fend for themselves. As Mitt Romney showed us, they take advantage of a range of tax breaks and dodges, leaving billionaires paying lower tax rates than their secretaries. They shouldn’t pocket all these subsidies and benefits without at the very least opening their doors to women and minorities. Diversity isn’t just a moral and legal imperative. It is good business, too. America is soon to become majority minority. Those institutions that reflect the diversity of their customers are more likely to thrive than those who isolate themselves. And Wall Street, like Silicon Valley, is a global industry. America’s strength is its diversity. If Wall Street keeps the doors shut to a majority of Americans and a majority of the world, it may find itself shut out of more and more opportunities. You can write to the Rev. “whiter, male-er and middle age-er.” The bank with the highest percentage of Blacks and Hispanics was JPMorgan Chase with 13 percent; Morgan Stanley was close with 12 percent. The worst was DeutscheBank. Both DeutscheBank and Barclays challenged Vettery’s figures as inaccurate, but refused to provide their own figures on their incoming hires. Silicon Valley, another powerhouse American industry, has been exposed for its lack of diversity, but it turns out Wall Street is worse. And Silicon Valley firms have taken real steps to correct their reality; Wall Street seems still to be largely in denial. We know all the “reasons” behind this lack of diversity. African Americans and Hispanics are less likely to have a family history in banking, or inherit a ton of money. They are less likely to have the family contacts, the shared experiences and associations. When they or women are aggressive, that might be seen more as threatening and unattractive than the same behavior exhibited by white men. Bigotry is no longer acceptable, but unconscious bias still governs significant behavior. That is why affirmative actions are vital if old barriers

day, October 20th at 8 am and last through 7 pm next Friday, October 31st which yes, is Halloween. Across Texas on Monday the first day 240.634 Texans had early voted. With a total of 8,978,312 Texans registered to vote that means by the end of the second day of early voting a total of 4.07 percent of the state’s registered voters already had chosen to participate either by mail or in person,” said Berry who serves as Texas’ 109th Secretary of State and as the first Indian-American to hold the office. She was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry and sworn in on January 7, 2014. “The cumulative figure for Tuesday evening includes 228,401 that chose to vote in person and 137,402 that voted by mail,” added Berry who served as vice chair of the University of Houston Board of Regents prior to her appointment, specialized in technology transactions as senior counsel at Locke Lord LLP law firm in Houston and sat on the boards of the

Carmel College in Bangalore, India, later earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and then a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center. She and her husband former Houston City Council Member Michael Berry live in Houston with their two children. “I encourage everyone to vote early. The polls are open next week from 7 am to 7 pm and it is better for everyone involved for everyone to try to do their voting before during early voting and not to wait until Election Day,” she said. Harris County had the highest turnout during the first two days of early voting of Texas’ 254 counties. Out of the 2,062,792 registered voters in Harris County 20,215 had voted in person on Monday and 20,380 had voted in person on Tuesday. Including the 83,347 that had voted by mail by the end of Tuesday 4.04 percent of Harris County’s registered voters voted. Fort Bend County had the

ninth highest turnout during the first two days of early voting. With 363,147 registered voters in Fort Bend County as of the end of Tuesday 9,710 had voted in person 6,058 by mail which means that by the end of Tuesday 4.34 percent of Fort Bend County registered voters had voted. Galveston County had the 13th highest voter turnout by end of Tuesday in Texas. With 191,961 registered voters 5,998 had voted in person and 3,245 by mail, which means that in Galveston County 4.71 percent of the county’s registered voters had voted by 4:30 pm Tuesday. Last spring’s primaries were separate elections for Democrats and Republicans to choose party nominees but in fall elections everyone is eligible to make up their own individual minds to vote for any individual it is they want to award their vote without regard to their party label. BOOK REVIEW Death of a King

By

By Tavis Smiley with David Ritz

Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

Y

our heroes are larger than life. They’re always tall, strong, and wise. No one can best them or outdo them, and no one can touch them in the good they do. Whether they’re cape-wearing, donning a dress, or suited, you want to be just like them. And you are, more than you realize. Your heroes are only human, after all, and in the new book “Death of a King” by Tavis Smiley (with David Ritz), you’ll read about one of them. On April 4, 1967, Martin Luther King, Jr. (known to his friends as “Doc”) had his mind made up. Despite urgings from many in his inner circle, he was determined to go head-to-head with Lyndon Johnson – arguably the most powerful man in the world – against the Vietnam War. They’d had this conversation before, Doc and LBJ, but Doc was “about to dramatically turn up the volume.” It pained him, however, that his own people were attacking him. In his mid-30s then, Doc seemed to be losing them. Many were following what SNCC leaders and Malcolm X were saying; specifically, that revolution was the way to quash racism. Doc felt strongly that ending the war was the key to peaceful equality. He was “still formulating his Vietnam position” at this time in his life, but he was increasingly seen as “out of style and out of step.” The notion may have been underscored that summer, when more than 125 riots broke out across the nation and no one seemed to be listening to Doc’s words. He was widely “out of favor” with many; some even blamed the violence on him. Fundraising events failed that year. Money was tight; they were “barely scrap[ing] by.” Doc’s inner circle began “fighting to take the campaign in different directions,” and he turned to his wife, Coretta,

on whom he had cheated, hoping for the support of at least one person he loved. By early spring of 1968, Doc was deeply depressed and was talking about death “’all the time’.” He wasn’t sleeping, wasn’t eating right, and was “torn by his obligations.” He confessed to friends that “He’s certain… he’ll be killed.” I’m not normally a fan of books like this. Recreated conversations presented as quotes and reconstructed personal feelings of dead men do not make a non-fiction book, in my opinion. But yet – because author Tavis Smiley explains why he wrote “Death of a King” this way - it’s okay. In fact, it’s better than okay. In his introduction, Smiley says that an early admiration of King helped him in life and career, but he thinks King’s “martyrdom has undermined [King’s] message.” Through interviews and other conversations, Sniley recorded “essential truths” that he says needed preserving, and he found an immensely readable way to share them. Ultimately, I liked this book for its novel-like flair and for the intimacy that it lends to “the soul of the man” so many revere. And if you’re one of those reverential folks, “Death of a King” will be a huge book for you. In Smiley’s book, he mentions King’s “Letters from a Birmingham Jail.” In “Letters to a Birmingham Jail” by Bryan Loritts, you’ll read essays by influential men who reflect on religion and the truths that King held dear. Loritts, by the way, is lead pastor of Fellowship Memphis Church . Share this story at stylemagazine.com.

HEALTH By Dr.

Lovell A. Jones, Health Editor

Dr. Lovell A. Jones

Lovell’s Food For Thought - The Health of Faculty of Color at Historically White Institutions

have been attempting to complete my pieces on my journey from 1964 to 2014 but events have always gotten in the way of writing and/or completing those pieces. However, what I realize is the events that occurred doing my journey are no different than what has been occurring today, and unfortunately, is the experiences of the younger generation faculty of color, especially African Americans. Frequently I get emails, calls and/or conversations about something have occurred doing my journey. But in today climate of post-racial issues, the psychological impact of these events seems even more severe. A colleague and mentee recently brought to my attention, the paper by Smith, Yasso and Solorzano entitled “Challenging Racial Battle Fatigue on Historically White Campus: A Critical Race Examination of Race-Related Stress” and the events sighted in that paper. It was around the micro-aggressions that

faculty of color, especially African American faculty face everyday. It brought me back to a discussion I had with my mentor of looking at these events as a game and not taking it personally. It helped, and for that I will always be grateful for those discussions. You see he faced not the same, but similar events as the first Jewish faculty member which he joined the zoology faculty at UC Berkeley. But as he realized, the subtle micro-aggressions I face were more subtle and deadly. He realized that he has support to address the aggressions and he knew what they were about. For me, it was how does one interpret these subtle micro-aggressions and more yet, how does one respond to them without being labeled and having ones career threatened? My mentor realized that the impact of my well-being was something few if any white faculty had experience or even know how to respond to when confronted about such. Unfortunately, this continues today. Even when I bring such up, I can tell that is something that they do not want to here about. At the stage of my career, it really does matter what they think. But think about that young faculty of color, and the impact such discussions might have on their career, especially if they are in the hard sciences. Unfortunate for African American faculty it shows up as stressed related diseases. I am now thinking of one my mentees, and what they are going through now. It truly pains me for there is nothing I can do other than write about it in hopes that the leadership of majority institutions will listen to what I have said and take it to heart and really do something. Again, from what I am hearing from young faculty, the environment for them has not really improved over the years. And in some cases, it has gotten even worst, as the leadership of these institutions

start to stress that we are in this post racial society and it is more about them than the environment they are in. This is increasing the stress on faculty of color to go along to get along or else, and with that increasing the psychological pathologies that are showing up. Institutions have hired Vice Presidents of Diversity or some thing along those lines to increase recruitment and retention of people of color without really focusing on the real problem. The William’s et al paper (2006) suggests strongly “race and racism are endemic and permanent in U.S. Society.” That CRT challenges the claims of “education of objectivity, meritocracy, color-blindness, race neutrality, and equal opportunity and asserts that these claims act as a camouflage for the self-interest, power and privilege groups in U.S. Society. Boy does this ring true. I remember when I came up for promotion to Associate Professor and having 18 letters of recommendation when three to six were normal. One of my mentors suggested that they were putting me up for a chair, “An Electric Chair.” Then being recommended in a way I could not be awarded tenure. Then it was put forth that this was normal. When I was put up for term tenure renewal the leadership in my department not put me up. For such to happen you had to be put up by a chair. As advised, I took a deep breathe, remembering that it is a game, and thank about what I need to do to win the game. I found a chair to review my criteria and to support submitting my credentials. As you probably guess, my tenure was renewed, butI the chair that did put me up, ironically, lost his chairmanship, coincidence??? Read the full story online at stylemagazine. com.

Oprah Winfrey’s Weekend Classroom

Oprah Winfrey

B

elieve it or not, the city of Houston helped to make one of Oprah Winfrey’s biggest bucket list dreams come true. We are one of eight cities to witness her dream of leading a star-studded team of master teachers in a traveling master class where secrets of the universe are showcased and celebrated in her mobile, weekend university. Oprah was born in Mississippi, moved to Milwaukee, then relocated to Chicago where we watched her become a world-wide media mogul, but she has always embraced her calling as an educator. She now hovers above the clouds, moving freely from sea to shining sea to enjoy the best of both worlds as a transcendent sharer of God’s universal light. The world’s most iconic “edutainer” just needed some willing students in various cities who

8

would enthusiastically reserve a weekend to be taught priceless life lessons in a Cecil B. DeMille type manner. On October 17th & 18th, she rolled out the red carpet and treated Houston to some of her favorite mental and spiritual things by transforming downtown H-Town into her OWN opulent O-Town. Imagine being invited to attend a super-hip, pimpedout, tech-superior private school temporarily open to the public for only two days. Visualize this elite academy catering to your highest angelic intentions, your heavenly anointing and your divine purpose in life. Next, see yourself sitting and dancing in a cavernous classroom with a spectacularly elegant split-level stage having four spiral staircases and a jaw-dropping IMAX screen overlooking an illuminated runway leading to an exclusive main stage

where your teachers, mentors and spiritual guides are all phenomenal millionaires (in addition to a generous billionaire) who possess a vital portions of the treasure map that leads to inner peace, prosperity, and to the pathway of your dreams that emanate from the divine portal your soul. Welcome to Oprah’s “The Life You Want Weekend.’ Furthermore, picture astute and fashionable classmates gathered all around you who are among the best and the brightest minds in town. Meanwhile, a beautiful and brilliantly rhythmic DJ who loves to pump up the volume is playing all of your favorite songs between classes. Finally, try to put into perspective the fact that your principal/head master also happens to be one of the most unselfish and extraordinarily successful business professionals alive today, as well as being one of the most accomplished and famous females in the history of planet Earth. Oprah Winfrey is a living, breathing, walking industry that routinely sits under shady oak trees to hear if the universe is saying anything interesting to her. Then, she openly talks to millions and tells them what she knows for sure. After making a few well-placed phone calls, some of her most profound friends agreed to join her on the Toyota Center stage to share their stories of utter pain, divine epiphanies and true-life triumphs. However, Friday night was not for her friends. It was an intimate evening in which Houstonians and her faithful followers from elsewhere were treated to a rare opportunity to separate real Oprah facts from ridiculous, tabloid fiction she has long since put behind her and under her golden feet. Queen Midas was touching folks early the next morning, opening up her O-Town doors at 7:00 AM. Class was in session approximately two hours later at 9:00 AM as Ms. Winfrey gracefully ascended up to the stage to welcome everyone back, while wearing stylish gray jeans and a tope leather jacket that looked like something from the Olivia Pope collection. Soft-spoken Dr. Deepak Chopra was the perfect speaker for the early Saturday morning timeslot. He calmly cajoled nearly 20,000 people to take personal responsibility for their lives by reassuring them they had the innate ability to proactively respond to anything if they, first, learn how to properly breathe and meditate. He invited the attentive audience to get in touch with their heart by recalibrating their convictions with some simple, yet soul-searching questions. Who am I? What do I want? What is my life purpose? What am I grateful for? Dr. Chopra’s consistent goal has always been to lead the masses to synchronicity with the universe. The electrifying home court of our future NBA champion Houston Rockets has never been more serene and silent. Afterwards, Deepak disappeared from the stage as quietly as he first floated to it. Oprah emphatically announced to the relaxed audience that awakening to ‘The Life You Want’ includes knowing the life you don’t want, and that the universe only responds to the pureness of your heart. She effectively created a curiosity for more soul-searching for the remainder of the day. Want to know more? Visit stylemagazine. com for the full story. of a kind jewelry, headpieces hand stitched from Ghana, and unique Sun Shades are just to name a few of the wonderful pieces of the boutiques collection. Draped in a flattering piece from the boutique, owner Lauren Anzaldua tells us that Indigenous is described as an online Boutique for women that are free spirited who are comfortable within themselves and their own sense of style. Anzaldua wants shoppers to know that Idigenous is a brand for the woman who want to buy items that benefit the society. The 2013 college graduate took a risk when she launched her socially conscious online fashion boutique last year and now she

tastes success as she meets her 1st year of business. Anzaldua wants to offer that boutique shopping experience while emphasizing products that are ethically produced. Prices of the items range between $14-$200, however there is something for everyone’s budget. Anzaldua’s most popular brand is “show me your Moo Moo” and ranges between $90-&150, not to forget about her beautiful jewelry pieces that are cheaper priced. One of Lauren’s personal favorites is the Saco Ribbon Sandals, which are made from young women in Uganda in order to help pay their way through college similar to other brands in the boutique. Anzaldua states, “Five years from now, I see Indigenous growing with one or two brick-and-mortar locations.” The young entrepreneur also states that she plans an exclusive clothing line in the future for Indigenous, which will have an established non-profit. Lauren’s Mantra is “Fashion to feel good about, and with this in mind I will never lose track of my original mission.” For more information, visit http://shopindigenous.com/.
