o n a l d Tr u m p , f a l l i n g behind in the polls, with his campaign imploding around him, now says the election is “rigged.” He refuses to say whether he will accept the verdict of the voters. Just as he tried to undermine the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency with the malicious and false “birther” issue, now he’s gearing up to assail the legitimacy of Hillary Clinton’s presidency with the “rigged election” issue. In fact, his charges directly contradict the truth. We know what a “rigged” electoral system looks like. At the founding of this country, the electoral system was rigged: Only rich, white landowners could vote. Slaves, native Americans, women and white men without property

POLITICAL By Burt

arly voting throughout the country, the state, and Harris County is higher than ever before. In the first two days of early voting across Harris County, 141,013 voters waited up to two hours in lines to cast ballots compared to 98,671 in 2012 the last Presidential race. Early voting estimates slightly favor Democrats 42to-38 locally fueled by an optimism for Harris County Democratic candidates not seen in decades. The busiest early vote site Tuesday was the Multi-Service Center at West Gray near Montrose where 3,253 votes were cast compared to 3,158 Monday and 2,733 the same time four years ago. West Gray is considered favorable to Democrats due to the large inner-city LGBT population in that area but businesses, law, and engineering people vote their because it is near downtown too. The second busiest early voting site Tuesday was the Juergen›s Hall Community Center in the Cypress area where 3,201 votes were cast compared to 2,384 Monday. Juergen’s Hall just opened this year because of tremendous growth in the northwest suburbs that traditionally favors Republicans but Cy-Fair ISD in recent years has gone

were denied the right to vote. That was a system rigged to protect those with property from the threat of democracy. W h e n t h e C i v i l Wa r ended slavery, the Southern states created poll taxes, white primaries, grandfather clauses, literacy tests and other barriers to voting, all of it reinforced by violence and intimidation. That was a system rigged to enforce segregation and protect it from the threat of democracy. Today, facing an emerging majority reform coalition that gave Barack Obama a majority of all votes in 2008 and 2012, Republican governors have passed measures that require voting IDs, cut back on early voting days, eliminate same-day registration, limit the number and hours of voting places in minority districts, gerrymander election districts or, like Texas, accept a gun registration ID but not a student registration ID. That is a system rigged to hold on to the status quo and protect it from the threat of democracy. Today, money floods our politics. In Citizens United v. FEC

and other decisions, a conservative gang of five on the Supreme Court legitimated corporate financing, dark money and unlimited donations. The two-party bias of our electoral system undermines third-party efforts. The lack of free media and public financing makes big money more important. Elections held on Tuesdays make voting harder for workers on the clock. This is a system rigged to protect the interests of the few from the threat of the many. This election isn’t rigged against Trump. If anything, it is rigged in his favor. We have a separate and unequal electoral system in which each state creates its own rules. In many states, partisans have their thumb on the scale -- as in Florida in 2000 or Ohio in 2004. And today Republicans hold the governorship and both houses of the legislature in 23 states. Democrats only control seven. Those who rule set the rules, and in at least 23 states, they are creating a system that benefits Republicans and their presidential nominee. This system is a disgrace. We need a constitutional amendment

that guarantees citizens the right to vote, something that is not now in the Constitution. Congress would have the clear authority to create a unified voting system with minimum commonsense standards. Then we need an aroused citizenry that demands that Congress act to curb the role of big money in politics. We deserve a unified, national electoral system that guarantees every citizen a protected right to vote, the most fundamental right of all in a democracy. If Trump were talking about these realities, maybe he’d deserve a hearing. Instead, he’s braying about the same media that helped him reach where he is today. In the end, he sounds simply like a loser, whining about the inescapable reality that his brand of divisive and hateful politics will be rejected by most voters at the polls this November. from 60 percent white to 60 percent non-white. The third busiest early voting site Tuesday was Champions Forest Baptist Church in north Harris County where 3,008 votes were cast compared to 2,311 Monday. Champions Forest had 2,657 votes cast the first day four years ago and 3,013 the second day but it was then one of the only early voting sites in north Harris County where this year new polls have been provided up there. The fourth busiest early voting site Tuesday was Trini Mendenhall Community Center in Spring Branch on Wirt Road just north of I-10 where 2, 932 votes were cast compared to 2,533 Monday. Trini Mendenhall hosted 1,830 voters the first day and 2,201 the second day four years ago. This is the first open presidential election in eight years. Voters are motivated to have their voices heard. The fifth busiest early voting site Tuesday was Bayland Park on Bissonnet near Hillcroft where 2,219 votes were cast compared to 1,924 Monday this year and 1,404 the first day and 1,508 the second day four years ago. Around Bayland Park, there are three contested state rep. races attracting voters.

Oct 27 - Nov 2 , 2016

The sixth busiest early voting site Tuesday was Champion Life Centre Church in Spring where 2,020 votes were cast compared to 1,781 Monday and 1,755 the first day and 1,946 on the second day four years ago. Spring, again, is historically Republican but has become increasingly minority. The seventh busiest early voting site Tuesday was Jersey Village City Hall where 2,202 votes were cast compared to 1,516 Monday, and 1,404 the first day and 1,523 the second day four years ago. The eighth busiest early voting Tuesday was Clear Lake’s Freeman Library where 1,998 votes were cast Monday compared to 1,607 Tuesday, and 1,720 the first day and 1,893 the second day four years ago. The ninth busiest early voting site Tuesday was Kingwood Library where 1,872 votes were cast compared to 1,741 Monday, and 1,619 the first day and 1,850 the second day four years ago. The tenth busiest early voting site Tuesday was Prairie View A&M University Northwest where 1,848 votes

were cast compared to 1,661 Monday. Prairie View A&M Northwest is one of the new early vote locations this year added because of northwest Harris County’s suburban growth. Early voting is happening now from 8 am-to-6 pm through Friday, October 28th, 7 am-to-7 pm on Saturday, October 29th, Sunday, October 30th from 1 pm-to-6 pm and Monday through Friday 7 am-to-7 pm October 31st through November 4th for the Tuesday, November 8th General Election. City Council Endorses Historic Pension Reforms Style Newswire

O

n a 16-1 vote, Houston City Council has endorsed Mayor Sylvester Turner’s historic package of pension reforms. The vote clears the way for the City to move forward in partnership with the pension systems to seek legislative approval of the reforms. The plan immediately reduces the City’s nearly $8 billion pension debt by over 30 percent and then sets a 30-year fixed payoff schedule for the remaining $5.3 billion of debt. This immediate reduction is accomplished through a combination of benefits changes that include scaling back costof-living adjustments, higher employee payroll contributions and phasing out of the Deferred Retirement Option Program, known as DROP, which allows employees to accept retirement benefits while continuing to work for the City. In return for the concessions, the City has agreed to issue $1 billion in Pension Obligation Bonds to make up for years of prior underfunding of the pension systems. Voters Beware: Check Your Choice to Hear Your Voice

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

E

ight years ago a Chicago man made us all have hope and believe that we could do the impossible together. We rode that dream all the way to the polls to make history and elect Barack Hussein Obama as the first African American President of the United States of America. Now over ninety years after women got the right to vote, we stand poised to make history again. President Obama has called her the most qualified. First Lady Michelle Obama says that she would be a president that our kids could look up to. Her policy views and the belief in what she stands for has made even the most devout Republicans switch party lines to be with her. Hillary Rodham Clinton is a candidate that will progressive the nation on the legacy of President Obama while forging her own path. In the other corner is a no traditionalist in every sense of the word. Because he is not Washington grown, he thinks differently. He is using his years of business sense to try to make political sense but it is not making total sense to all of America. He is a candidate that makes one scratch their head. Although major political leaders of his party don’t support him nor does any former living President of the United States of America, he continues to be close in the polls with his opponent, sometimes in the lead and sometimes trailing behind depending on the day and pollsters. Donald J. Trump is unlike any presidential candidate this county has ever seen. Two candidates who are polar opposites have made this campaign season one of the most brutal, interesting and historic. Flaring emotions in Americans, no matter their party affiliation, to energize them to show up at the polls in record numbers. This has caused a myriad of problems to swirl surrounding election 2016. Before votes could even be casted in Texas, the rumors of a “rigged” election started

10

Oct 27 - Nov 2 , 2016

with Trump as the loudest voice crying wolf. Claiming that the system was rigged in the favor of Clinton. With early voting underway in Texas, claims have grown. Residents across the state are taking to social media with a stern warning to all voters to check their ballots before casting them. Why? Human error seems to be the culprit. Throughout Texas voters are going into the voting booth to cast their vote but at the end when they are reviewing the ballot the selected choices don’t always match up with the ones they originally selected. Some voters have said that if they do a straight Republican ticket when they review their ballot at the end Hillary Clinton is selected as president and vice versus if they do a straight Democratic ticket. Of course, this has caused a lot of tempers to rise and speculations to circulate. However voting officials have repeatedly said that no voter rigging is happening and the voting machines are in working order. The problem lies with the operate/voter who is turning the wheel incorrectly when preparing to cast their vote. Voters need to simply review their ballot thoroughly before casting their vote and if all else fails ask the voting officials on site for assistance. Houston voters have had to ask for a lot of assistance since they have also incurred a different problem. Voters will select to do a Democratic Party ticket but when they write in any candidate their vote for Hillary Clinton as president is kicked out. Jolanda Jones recently posted a video about the issue at one local polling site in Houston. She wrote on her Facebook page, “Pls share this www.StyleMagazine.com

information…if you write in ANY candidate you will not be able to vote for Hillary Clinton…pls vote straight democratic ticket pls. We cannot loose this because of write in candidates!! Vote straight dems.” The solution to this problem is the same as the first. Check you ballot and when in need ask voting officials for help. Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart has reassured voters that all voting procedures followed in the county are in aligned with the Federal and State Election Code. In an interview with Houston Public Media, Stanart said voting machines are accurately set up and overseen by appointees from both major parties before any votes are cast. After that process the machines are then delivered to polling locations on judge booth controllers under seal. Votes casted are recorded on SD-like cards that are resealed for transport back to the tabulation location. The machines are never connected to the internet. Stanart said they are lot eyes and triggers in the whole system that would uncover fraudulent voting. Whether you choose to make history with Team Clinton or think differently with Team Trump, just make sure you do at least one thing and that’s vote. Vote now. Vote early. Don’t wait until November 8th. And once you vote, double and triple check your ballot before casting your vote. Early voting is happening now through November 4th. Find out where to vote at votetexas.gov, harrisvotes.gov or fortbendvotes. gov.

E T R O has been provided a plan by contractor Houston R a p i d Transit (HRT) to immediately begin addressing a mechanical issue that has slowed the Authority›s rail service at times, creating a headache for operations and riders of the three-line METRORail system and drivers at rail crossings. The repairs scheduled for Green, and Purple and Red Line extension (Northline) axle counters follow months of study and workarounds on malfunctioning hardware which often triggers a false report of a train occupying a portion of track when no rail car is present. Siemens, the manufacturer of the component, had been unable to remedy the issue since it began surfacing in 2014 on the newly opened rail lines.

exas Native and gospel recording artist Chad Brawley who sees himself as “a minister/musician/community leader/educator/mentor” is innovatively inviting others to kneel in worship with his newly released We Worship project. TeamStyleMag got a chance to sit and talk with him about his project. Did he receive a calling? CB: I didn’t have some big huge “ahha!” moment. I feel like I have been slowly cut throughout my life. My grandmother had a piano I loved to play and I played music in band. My parent’s saw that I had a gift and in the sixth grade my talent was noticed and I began to play for the youth choir and that was my intro in to church and I just stayed into music.

The project has been in the works for about four years. I’m happy to see it come to fruition, its been a long time coming.

didn’t aspire to be a gospel artist] it’s my ministry, however the artist side helps you have credibility to expand your ministry. I wouldn’t be a gospel artist if there was no connection to ministry.

Introducing himself as Brad, the builder reveals that the golden walls were imported directly from Vietnam. At 14,000 sq. feet it’s the third and largest Houston location for Johnny “TV Johnny” Dang, who sits behind a well crafted desk in order to answer a few questions before the grand opening officially begins. “I’ve been dreaming of having my own complex and I was blessed to make it happen. Very blessed, it’s like a dream come to reality. I appreciate Houston and the city for supporting me. I love it.” At his side is wife Jennifer Dang, whose Fashcino collection is featured alongside her husband’s custom Grillz and sparking jewels. She explains, “We want our customers to feel that they are very important.” On that day they’ve pulled

On the other side of the room sits Houston legend Paul Wall, who has worked with Dang as they’ve built Johnny Dang & Co into a powerhouse. It’s been a great year for Wall, thanks in part to the success of his recently released The Houston Oiler and the banger “Swangin in the Rain”, released earlier this year. T BOOK REVIEW By Terri

Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

Y

ou had a little talk with one of your employees last week. Her client list has almost no action and few new prospects on it lately, and that’s no good. She blames the economy, says it’s rough out there and while you know that’s true, you suspect there’s more to the issue: she’s stagnated. With the new book “When Strangers Meet” by Kio Stark, she’ll get back her gift of gab. Every day, probably sometimes without thinking, you speak with someone you don’t know well. It might be someone semi-familiar; a neighbor, perhaps, or maybe it was just someone to whom you wished a good morning. Those kinds of interactions, those tiny bits of humanity offered, give Kio Stark a lot of joy. In today’s world, we often perceive strangers as suspicious; indeed, many people teach their kids accordingly. Stark says that we need to be careful, it’s true, but “stranger” may mean different things at different times. She also points out that “unpredictable and unpleasant are not by definition dangerous” and that despite our natural propensity to stereotype, “we are surrounded by individuals, not categories.” What makes this idea even more interesting is what experiments prove: we feel better when we interact in small ways with people we don’t know. Listening to people makes them want to talk more and if they listen to your feelings, they’ll go even further. Talking to strangers often helps you gain empathy, too. But none of this means that you should go willy-nilly into the streets and start yakking. Some cultures frown on speaking with strangers, says Stark.

T

When Strangers Meet In some places, “civil inattention,” in which you quietly, furtively acknowledge each others’ presence, is as good as it gets. Conversely, there are many cultures that have never met a stranger. The place to start, says Stark, is “to pick your moments.” We’re most receptive to small talk when we’re not rushed, so offer a compliment, ask for help, or ask a question of someone random. And then know how to extricate yourself because “Exits can be the most awkward…” Cat got your tongue at work? “When Strangers Meet” can help make that cat, scat. Though this isn’t a business tome, strictly speaking, author Kio Stark’s TED Talk book could just as well be called “The Art of Small Talk,” or perhaps “How to Network.” Beginning with anecdotes that illustrate the joy in both, Stark shows readers how small connections, chosen carefully or occurring spontaneously, can foster personal growth and career enhancement. Yes, there could be some discomfort involved in what she advocates – introverted readers may particularly struggle here – but the exercises included toward the end of her book may help ease future talkers out of their comfort zones. If you feel awkward in a strange situation, or if learning to be loquacious is one of your career goals, this book might be a good start. For practice with cocktail chat or talking up a storm, “When Strangers Meet” offers unique advice and that’s all there is to say. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Menu Offerings That Capture the Spirit of Autumn By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

ouston’s weather is finally beginning to reflect the changing of the temperature, many restaurants have switched their menu selections to reflect such changes. Now is the season for dark leafy greens, roasted pecans, walnuts, and mouth –watering bosc pears. We re-visited Seasons 52 and Quattro to taste some of their most requested autumn dishes and the selections did not disappoint. First of all, Quattro Restaurant located in The Four Seasons Hotel in Downtown Houston has an eclectic menu of classic Italian dishes that are all the creation of Chef Maurizzio and his staff. We started dinner with the arugula salad, which is made with the greens, pears, pickled onions, Texas pecans and lemon dressing. The fresh vegetables and nuts were light, crunchy, and the combination of the pickled onions with the dressing created a slight burst of citrus flavors at the end. We moved on quickly to the Strozzapreti Caserecci, which is described on the menus as” untraditionally cooked: strozzapreti pasta, 44 farm short ribs ragout, dried porcini mushrooms.” The chef explained that the pasta was prepared by hand, and then went straight into the sauce as opposed to water, which is considered the traditional way of preparation. This dish was full of flavor, the pasta was cooked perfectly, the sauce coated each bite and the short ribs were so tender, I almost forgot that we were eating meat. This paired well with the Byott Cotes 2015 wine selection that we enjoyed immensely. The following week, we sprinted back to City Center and paid another visit to Seasons 52. As we looked over the menu, our server recommended one of the best tasting cocktails I’ve experienced all year. “The Perfect Storm”, which is made with a combination of Absolut Pears, St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Bosc Pear, and a sprig of Thyme. As we enjoyed this drink and rolled our eyes to the top of our foreheads, the waiter slid in a platter of the duck wing lollipops. The wings were slightly spicy which made the cocktail taste even better. Finally, the tasting wrapped up with the Spinach and Caramelized Bosc Pear salad, which was topped with toasted walnuts, Gorgonzola, sherry-walnut vinaigrette. This salad tasted like Christmas, every bite of it. The main course consisted of Boneless Beef Short Rib, which is prepared “slow braised, stone ground cheddar grits, roasted carrots, horseradish crema. The beef was tender and full of flavor; every bite I took had some of the grits on the fork. We also tasted the TRUFFLE MAC ‘N’ CHEESE EN BRODO, which consists of cave-aged Gruyère, cheddar, truffle zest, and panko crust. We gave up and took the rest home, now it’s your turn, check out Quattro and Seasons 52, let us know what you think. Lovell’s Food For Thought - Creating A Critical Mass to Eliminate Health Inequities

O

ne has many mentors over one’s life. For me, I have been fortunate to have many who have had a positive impact on my life. And without whose help, I would not be where I am today. There are two who I was like to highlight that I owe a special debt of gratitude. Both of these men cared as much about my career as they did about their own careers. One, Howard Bern, guided me through graduate school and the other, Finn Siiteri, through my postdoctoral fellowship. I remember Finn once saying, “it is not only what you know, but who knows you that will be crucial for your success.” That was quite evident when18 individuals were asked to write letters of recommendation for my promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. This group included two Nobel laureates, five members of the National Academy of Sciences, two directors of foreign research laboratories and other distinguished individuals. I remember Finn calling me to tell me about the numbers. He then said, “They must be putting up for a chair, then laughed and said,“an electric chair.” This validated that networking was extremely important in that those all asked wrote positive letters for my promotion. BTW, I did get promoted, was it took another year to gain tenure. The other saying I keep in my mind is what my other mentor said. Howard would say as I often paraphrase him, “your greatest contribution to science (sometimes life) is not the papers you publish or the grants you secure or the honors bestowed on you, but the people you leave behind to continue to work.” Both men made sure whoever came through their labs; their trainees got to meet them. And both pushed the work of their trainees, make sure that if the mentee’s work was presented, the mentee got credit for their work. Therefore, when the 18 individuals got that request for a letter of recommendation on my promotion, they all knew who I was and the scientific contributions I made. Both men made it abundantly clear, as Howard said, “Let your science be the rock you stand on!! Even in quicksand, you will not sink.”What this meant was to also mentor by example even when you speak out on social issues. That if you were going to leave successful people behind to continue the work; you needed to be successful as well. This is a philosophy I have tried to instill into my mentees. Affectionately, some of my mentees call me “Papa Jones.” Howard once said that when you take on a trainee, it is like adopting a child. I remember a time, not calling him for a while after having moved to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, I got this phone call with the voice on the other end of the line saying, “you don’t need me anymore.” It was Howard. Since 2006, the Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Workshop has provided a forum for the fellow who trained in the Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH) to come together at an informal Alumni reception/dinner where they renewed old friendships and created new ones. It has now expanded to not only the Kellogg Fellows, but other mentees, faculty and staff of the CRMH. Recently, the idea of forming a formal network came to mind on a recent Sunday, after Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee mentioned that she had run into “one of my Army.” As I thought about it, I realized that the Army is larger than

just those who have came through the CRMH, but all of those who have been impacted by the CRMH, the ICC and HDEART and their educational programs. For instance, recently I was asked to speak for a few minutes at the Health Line Wellness Expo organized by the Voice of Asia News Group. As I was walking into the health fair, a young lady staffing one of the health fair booths called out to me. “Are you Dr. Jones?” When I responded yes, she then said “I was a student in your health disparities class in 2006. I still have the binder with all of the information provided during the course. In fact, I still use.” It has helped me tremendously in working with the multicultural population of Fort Bend c=Country.” This past summer, Dr. Lisako McKyer served as one the co-chairs of this year’s Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Workshop. Dr. McKyer, who attended the 2005 Workshop, still has her binder sitting above her desk. I suspect that there are many more individuals out there with their binders in use. I think that it is time to start bringing those individuals together into a formal network. I see it as bring the many tributaries that come together to form a mighty river, like that of the Mississippi. Bring together the drops of melted snow being brought together to form a mighty river or like fingers of ain hand being broad together in addressing health inequity. Individually we may change our surrounding,

but together we can change the world around us. The issue, as I see it, is that we have constantly failed to bring individuals of like mind together as a cohesive force. For we have too often continued to develop soloitis (a new word I have coined) and remain like individual drops lacking a true focus and effective force. Together, with those who have come through the Disparities In Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice course and workshop, there are almost 6,000 individuals who have been impacted. I believe as a unit, “speaking with one voice”, we can make the difference we have been seeking. So, if you have been impacted and would like to become a member of the Experimental Gynecology Laboratory (EGL)/Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH)/Dorothy I. Height Center for Health Equity & Evaluation Research (DHCHEER) Alumni Network please email, I will send you the link to fill out the form to become a member of the Army in addressing health inequities. Even if you have not been impacted and would like to join, email me as well.

By American Heart Association

P

eople who don’t go to the hospital via EMS reduce the odds of getting the best treatment for stroke, according to recent American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines-Stroke data. For World Stroke Day on Oct. 29, the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association in Houston, Texas will join others across the nation and the world to encourage people to save lives by responding promptly to stroke. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and second leading cause of death globally. “Getting help quickly for stroke is more important than anything else you may be doing or have planned,” said Dr. FIRST NAME Dannenbaum, INSERT TITLE, ORG and American Heart Association/American Stroke Association volunteer. “Whether you are the one experiencing symptoms or you see them in someone else, remember that stroke won’t wait, and neither should you.” People reported varying

Learning ‘FAST’ Response to Stroke Urged for World Stroke Day reasons for delaying stroke treatment in an informal survey of American Stroke Association website visitors: Several hoped symptoms would resolve on their own. Many had other priorities, including finishing work, meeting up with family or even a scheduled hair appointment. Some expressed an outdated, fatalistic view of the disease. “Looking back, the right response is clear, but in the moment, doubt and denial are natural responses to stroke signs and can lead to bad decisions,” said Dr. Dannenbaum. “The heart-breaking thing is that for many of these patients, we might have been able to decrease disability if they would have gotten to us sooner and by ambulance.” Many ischemic strokes, which account for 87 percent of all strokes and are caused by an obstruction of blood flow to the brain, can be treated with the clot-busting medication tissue plasminogen activator (IV r-tPA/alteplase) and a stent retriever device that removes the clot. Research has shown that 91

percent of eligible stroke patients treated with IV r-tPA and a stent retriever in two and a half hours or less had minimal or no disability. “The same person who would h a v e s u ff e r e d a severely disabling or fatal stroke a few years ago now commonly walks out of the hospital a few days later,” said Dr. Dannenbaum. “Decades ago there were no treatments for stroke. Now we have therapies that may interrupt even the most severe and disabling stroke if we can get to it in time.” Through Together to End Stroke, nationally sponsored by Medtronic, the American Stroke Association teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. as an easy way to remember the most common stroke warning signs and how to respond: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911. Each year, thousands of Houstonians come together at the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association annual Houston Heart Walk to join in the fight against heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. One district leader from Canada shocked us when she told us how many naturals in Canada are awaiting the Beautiful Textures Texture Manageability System (which allows your naturally curly hair to go from curly-to-straight without chemicals). However, due to packaging it hasn’t reached stores yet. When the average person thinks of Sally

A company that provides an expo so that their store managers and district leaders can educate/ re-educate themselves on familiar products, new products, and changing trends in beauty. That’s exactly what Sally Beauty did this past weekend in Dallas, Texas when they invited over 800 store managers, district leaders, YouTubers, and influencers to their expo. Sally Beauty put a spin on this year’s expo with the addition of YouTubers and influencers to give store managers and district leaders an insider’s look into the mind of consumers. The beauty brand understands that nothing beats word-of-mouth advertising or in our times social-type of advertising. YouTubers and influencers represent the voices of the consumers who want to know more about products than what’s printed on the label before they try it. Sally Beauty utilized the YouTubers and influencers almost like guinea pigs having them test products already in stores and those coming in the near future. And depending on what the product reviewers think, it could equal profitable sales for Sally Beauty. Although all 100+ vendors excited us, what really caught our attention was the Strength of Nature Products: Motions Hair and Beautiful Textures TMS. Motions has been around for years and is a trusted product that our on-hand Media Personality TotallyRandie (@TotallyRandie) has used for a while. After going natural, she hadn’t realized that Motions Hair had been removed from Sally Beauty Stores for repackaging. This is why she is now so excited for its return to Sally’s Beauty Supply shelves in early 2017. Coming back better than ever, Motions

Beauty they just think products, what’s in stores and what they typically can’t find. But the brand is so much more than that. The expo allowed us to see the depth of the brand. It’s totally natural to have challenges while you’re assimilating into a SelfLove Lifestyle. It’s very common that clients feel very uncomfortable and sometimes even become emotional when they are put in the place where all they are allowed to do is receive. TSU fell short to Jackson State in a hard-fought loss, 21-13. Zachery Johnson, the drum major at Kashmere High School who has been featured in a popular Metro television commercial, came one giant step closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming a member of TSU’s famed “Ocean of Soul” Marching Band. Johnson was awarded a full scholarship to attend TSU next fall and audition to be a drum major for the University’s renowned marching band. “Zachery is a great example of why alumni support of TSU scholarship fundraising campaigns is so important,” said

T

he Texas Southern University campus was abuzz for seven days as students, alumni, faculty and staff celebrated its 2016 Homecoming – ReMember the Times. This year’s week-long slate of events featured three concerts, a basketball game between alumni and students, a comedy show, college open house receptions, a coronation, tailgating and a parade - all on the campus located in the heart of the city’s historic Third Ward. The Homecoming football game was held at nearby BBVA Stadium, home of the TSU Tigers. Homecoming was held October 16 – 22. TSU President Austin A. Lane was present for most events throughout the week, engaging students, alumni, faculty and staff in a jam-packed Homecoming schedule. Lane hosted a brunch for students, played in the Clash of the Classes basketball game, represented his fraternity (Kappa Alpha Psi) at the Wild and Out comedy show, interacted with alumni at their gatherings, continued the Listen and Learn Tour, played in a round of golf at the alumni Tiger Paw Golf Classic, and attended the University’s Remember the Times Showcase and Concert, hosted by KTSU Radio. Lane served as Grand Marshal of the Grand Tiger Parade and presented TSU’s Royal Court during halftime at the football game. “It was a whirlwind, but the Tiger energy was high. There was something for the TSU community, both youngsters and elders, and the University fulfilled its mission to remember the past as we look forward to a bright future,” Dr. Lane said.

TSU First Lady Loren Lane. “When we identify students such as Zach with excellent credentials and a burning desire to join the TSU family, we want to be able to give them that opportunity.” To this end, Mrs. Lane announced that she will lead a University signature event in the Spring, on April 29, where one hundred percent (100%) of the proceeds will go to deserving students for scholarships. Sponsorships are available and persons interested in supporting this initiative by becoming a sponsor, volunteer or by purchasing tickets should call TSU’s University Advancement Office at 713-313-1361. T h e G r a n d Ti g e r Parade returned to the Third Ward community and people of all ages lined the two-and-a-half–mile route to witness a record number of marching bands, clubs, walking units, floats and decorated cars – 183 in all – that were entered into this year’s parade. People cheered as the parade rolled through the community after a nine-year absence. Spectators even held signs that read, “Welcome Back to the Community Texas Southern University. The Kashmere High School band participated in the parade and Zachery Johnson was stopped numerous times to take photos with excited spectators. Blodgett Urban Gardens; Breakfast After Dark, hosted by TSU’s Student Government Association; Student Appreciation Day, where TSU faculty and staff served lunch to the student body; and a Yard Fest. “This year was one for the books! This is how Texas Southern University tailgates at Homecoming,” Corrie Williams, a Dallas alumna, said. Rochelle Pollard is an alumna and was excited about returning to campus. “Yes, celebrating 25 years was a special homecoming event,” she said. “Next year will be bigger and better! Keep TSU great!” “We are already planning for TSU’s Homecoming 2017,” said Justin Dorsey, one of the student leaders, stated. “This year’s homecoming was nothing but fun, fun, and more fun!” “ Te x a s S o u t h e r n University Homecoming 2K16 was epic and owes me nothing,” said Laural Brown. “It was a revival and I can only applaud President

and First Lady Lane, the TSU faculty and staff, alumni, students, friends and our community for raising the bar of school spirit and pride. The best is yet to come for our University and our visionary president.” When I was at the Homecoming parade, I cried tears of joy,” said TSU student Nycole Hutchens. “Tears were literally coming down my eyes. You have to understand how historic of a moment this was for me, especially since it’s my last semester as an undergrad.” “Not in 67 years have I witnessed such an out pouring of interest in and concern for Texas Southern University, Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, TSU’s iconic Forensics coach who has served the university for 67 years. “Thank you for your leadership role in making this possible.” Freeman said he was moved to write the note after repeatedly hearing, people say, “I am so glad they brought the parade back…I’m so glad they brought it back to the community.” “ We c e r t a i n l y a r e getting rave reviews about this year’s homecoming celebration,” stated Eva Pickens, Vice President for University Advancement, the division responsible for marketing, communications, alumni and development units. “We were listening when students said they wanted a homecoming that combined the present with the past. Alumni said they wanted a traditional homecoming. We are hopeful that we blended their wishes together and that everyone enjoyed Homecoming as much as we enjoyed preparing each event for them. I wholeheartedly agree that this homecoming will be a part of our history books.”

astor Marc Thomas would be proud of the legacy that a grassroot agency has in honor of him. In 1997, he passed from Sickle Cell Disease and ever since the Sickle Cell Association of Texas Marc Thomas Foundation has provided assistance to families affected by the disease. One of their fundraisers is the 3K Walk for Sickle Cell. An estimated 300 sickle cell families and patients gathered to support individuals with sickle cell disease. All funds raised from this walk will benefit the agency’s annual Camp Cell-A-Bration, a camp for children between the ages of 6 and 14 with sickle cell disease.

The Homecoming football game was an all out cat battle against the tigers of Jackson State University. This was the first homecoming for Dr. Austin A. Lane as TSU’s 12th president.
