Ebola: Mobilization, Not Panic

he spread of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa is a global health emergency. Countries around the world must join together to mobilize the resources, build the isolation units, supply the needed medicine, doctors, nurses and support personnel needed to isolate and treat those afflicted, track down and monitor those who might have been in contact, and stop the epidemic. The toll of the victims of the epidemic -- centered in the West African countries of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone -- is rising. The World Health Organization now reports over 7,400 confirmed or likely cases, and 3,431 deaths. On September 23, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that without a more robust response, as many as 1.4 million cases could erupt

ith early voting starting next week Monday, October 20th and Election Day less than a month away for the November 4th General Elections the Houston Bar Association (HBA) released its respected 2014 Judicial Preference Poll conducted online with all attorney members of the HBA being eligible to vote their preferences regarding candidates that will be on everyone’s fall ballot. “Believing an informed and educated electorate is essential to the efficient administration of justice HBA has conducted these judicial preference polls since the early 1970s in each election year to ensure voters know the preferences of those that know the

the disease. As Nigeria shows, we need mobilization, not panic, particularly with the chilling news that a Liberian, Thomas E. Duncan, tested positive for the disease in Dallas, the first case diagnosed in this country. Duncan, now in critical condition, traveled to the U.S. without being aware that he was infected. However, he did come into direct contact with a woman while in Liberia, and he failed to report the truth on an airport health questionnaire. When he contracted a fever, he went to the hospital but was sent him home without proper testing. When his symptoms grew worse, he was taken back to the hospital and isolated. Public health authorities have mobilized, identifying and monitoring all those who might have had contact with him. CDC officials fanned out in the hospital and in his neighborhood to investigate. Happily, as pediatrician Matt Karwowski reported to the Washington Post, “there was no resistance from anyone whatsoever... At every single door, people welcomed us in... They were also fearful, but not of us.” The CDC teams have been working 18 hours a day. This epidemic is a human disaster. It will devastate not only its victims, but also millions more as economies freeze up, schools close, tourism dries up, and fear spreads. In this country, some will use the epidem-

ic to fan racial divides or to posture on immigration. President Obama is already criticized for providing military assistance to build hospital units and transport necessary equipment and medicine in Liberia. Some treat Duncan more as a criminal than a patient, due to his failing to report the truth. His family reports that even those who have been cleared are now shunned in their community. In Jesus’ time, lepers were treated as unclean, sowing fear and hatred. On one of his last nights, Jesus stayed at the home of Simon the leper. He showed that we should be fighting the disease, not the person. That is a lesson we should remember in the days ahead of us. You can write to the Rev. Houston Bar Poll Brings Democrat and Republican Wins

David Chaumette

in Liberia and Sierra Leone by January 20. The virus is deadly, but not particularly infectious. It spreads only from direct contact from the bodily fluids -- sweat, blood, vomit -- of someone infected after the fever and other symptoms have occurred. Sadly, the incubation period -- the time after someone is infected but before symptoms appear -- lasts a week and sometimes as long as three weeks. People can travel long distances unaware that they are carrying the disease. This poses a challenge for health officials who must make the public aware so that they are cautious, without spreading panic. It also means that the entire world has a stake in countering this lethal epidemic. The disease can be stopped. An American victim, undiagnosed, carried the disease into crowded Lagos, Nigeria. More people live in Lagos than in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone combined. A vigorous response -- investigating all in contact with the patient, monitoring them, and isolating those who showed symptoms -- cleared the virus with only eight deaths. Nigeria had the public health and governmental capacity to respond. But in West Africa, civil wars and chronic poverty have disrupted already meager local health systems. Doctors are scarce; health workers had no experience with

law and practice the law in and around Houston,” said David Chaumette, HBA past president. “The Judicial Preference Poll is not an endorsement by the HBA. The poll included Democratic, Green, Libertarian and Republican office holders and incumbents for all judicial and some administrative positions that will appear on the Harris County ballot,” said Chaumette, who earned degrees in aerospace engineering from Princeton University and Stanford University before completing his law degree at The University of Chicago Law School. He is the founding partner of Sugar Landbased Chaumette, PLLC and his practice focuses on business litigation. The most vote-earning elected official in a Democrat v. Republican race on the fall ballot is engineer turned attorney, Harris County District Clerk Chris Daniel who earned 1,042 votes or 70 percent over his opponent Judith Snively who received 440 votes. The crime fighting and justice seeking Harris County District Attorney is the most dueled race on the local ballot and was the closest contest on the HBA Poll. Kim Ogg, a board certified former felony prosecutor and former

director of Crime Stoppers beat incumbent Devon Anderson 748 to 739 votes. Ogg worked oversaw a 40 percent drop in violent gang activity in Houston as head of the city’s first anti-gang task force. Anderson, a former criminal court judge, was married to Mike Anderson, who won the office two years ago and she was appointed following his death last year from liver cancer. Challenger Sam Houston, not related to the state’s founding father, beat front runner State Senator Ken Paxton 642 to 486 for State Attorney General. Paxton, the Republican nominee in a state no Republican has lot statewide in 20 years, is currently facing possible criminal investigations and indictments for his handling of personal and business dealings. Former Houston ISD Board President Judge Jeff Shadwick beat his opponent Kay Morgan 886 to 391 and former Houston Municipal Court Judge Steve Kirkland beat his opponent incumbent Judge Michael Landrum 651 to 584. Judge Caroline Baker, a fifth generation Houstonian and married mother to three children that graduated from Princeton College and UT Law School, sailed to a hard won victory

with 958 votes to 253 for her opponent. Challenger Jim Evans beat incumbent Judge James Lambordino 441 to 342 and much hailed Judge Sheri Y. Dean beat her challenger Kathy Vossler 432 to 354. Board Certified Sherri Cothrun, respected for 30 years of experience, clobbered her incumbent controversial opponent Alicia Franklin 476 to 290. Challenger Natalie Oaks knocked down her often controversial incumbent opponent John F. Phillips in a much closer contest with 400 to Phillips’ 348. The deadline to register to vote was Monday, October 6th with Harris County Registrar Mike Sullivan stating Harris County for the first time in history has registered more than two million citizens to vote. The power of voting and the right to vote for who you want, be they Republicans or Democrats, is critical. Between 30 and 40 percent of registered voters in Harris County participate in recent midterm elections. This means your vote is worth the votes of the 60 to 70 percent that don’t. HEALTH

F.A.T “Faith Action Transformation”

By Jade Gold, Fitness Writer

I

n many ways eating right and just overall general health and fitness is allot like following Jesus. I mean if you really think about, sometimes it’s hard to get going to better physical fitness and sometimes it’s hard to get going to follow God and have faith. When we have to retrain our thought process after maybe not eating so healthy, it can take some discipline to get you to a point where you are eating better. Making better choices and maintaining a certain lifestyle. That’s how it is when we decide to follow God. Our life will need to change in certain areas in order for us to follow him. Maybe we have a friend we will lose because he/she doesn’t agree with your new way of following God. Maybe a family member will voice their opinion of your new life style. May be we loose other social circle relationships because our lifestyle doesn’t include drinking, eating out as often or late nights. In the process of transformation there is no denying in order doing so, we will gain and loose things and people at the same time. It is a true metamorphosis during our life cycle that reaches into our physical state as well as our spiritual well being.

You know and that sometimes it’s not easy to get going, I know there’s been times in my life where I didn’t put God first and things weren’t in order the way they should be. You know when you do put God first, just like eating right, things fall into place, as they should be. It’s a matter of balanced and priority. For instance, 80% of the outcome you will experience in your fitness journey comes through the strength of your diet. Even if you choose to hire a personal trainer 5 days a week at 1 hour a day, that means you are still left with the task of owning 23 hours out of everyday on your own. As with your faith, you may be in fellowship on Sundays for a few hours and even perhaps on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, but the rest of the time, we are held accountable to the life we live through God, the moral standard we live by and the amount of study we put in and carry our faith by in the many days and hours we spend on our own. Folks often see someone prospering or changing according to the Word, whether in his health, his finances, his family, and so forth, and they get the mistaken impression that God must have given that person more faith. So the first thing I want you to

dps-issued

know is this: Every believer has been given a measure—the same measure—of the Godkind of faith. It’s up to you what you do with the measure of faith God has given you. So the second thing I want you to know is this: This measure of faith can be increased. But you’re the one who increases it, not God. Faith is like food, you have the power to increase your motivation, Jade Gold your determination and control how you feed and maintain your health & fitness. Tools are not enough. Diets alone are not enough; trainers and gym won’t make the transformation happen. This process of a fit-faith-transformation starts and ends with you. Remember, it’s up to you what you do with the measure of faith God has given you. You can cause your faith to grow. You can feed and exercise it so when the storms of life come, you will have strong faith. But another person may not do anything with his faith.

The person who does nothing with his faith will have weak faith. Can you see how powerful the parallel are between your faith and fitness? The person that choose to build and exercise their physical body along with the ability to weather the strong holds of controlling what they eat gives you the strength to encounter real transformation. BOOK REVIEW The Glass Cage: Automation and Us By Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

Y

our email is down. Again. It’s been that way on and off for a month now, and it’s driving you to distraction – literally. You check it every five minutes, ever-hopeful, and you’ve called IT so many times, they’re probably avoiding you. It’s up. It’s down. Sometimes, email is almost addicting - but is that good? Read the new book “The Glass Cage” by Nicholas Carr, and think hard before you answer… But first, ponder this: you are automated. There are hundreds of activities you do without thinking: driving, riding a bike, buttering your toast, reading this review. Psychologists call that tacit knowledge; they’re things you had to learn but can now do automatically. If you can make step-by-step directions, that’s called explicit knowledge. Computers, increasingly, are starting to step into this knowledge sphere because a “lot of the very smart things that people do don’t actually require a brain.” Computers help architects, doctors, attorneys, teachers and others by performing minor tasks, thus changing the way those workers work. That can be a beneficial, or not. Researchers know that work is a conundrum for humans: we profess to

prefer being leisurely, but the truth is that we’re happiest when deeply involved in our work. The best thing a computer can do in the workplace, therefore, is to allow blissful flow. But again, that’s good and bad. Studies show that when a computer takes over tasks that we formerly used our brains to do, we tend to lose ability to efficiently do the tasks manually when needed. Pilots and doctors have learned the hard way that humans experience “automation complacency… when a computer lulls us into a false sense of security.” We also lose the ability to remember minutiae because we reason that the computer will do it. Yes, “information underload can be equally debilitating.” And yet, says Carr, “computers still display a frightening lack of common sense” and they’re only as good as “their makers.” We just need to remember not to allow them to make decisions for us – professionally or ethically – and that “Unless we start having second thoughts about where we’re heading, [the] trend will only accelerate.” I wrote this review on a computer and you’re reading it because of one or two somewhere down the line. We rely on those machines more than we think we do, which

By Nicholas Carr

makes “The Glass Cage” even more alarming. But author Nicholas Carr doesn’t take an alarmist tone here. He lays out the facts from science, psychology, and business, allowing us, in many cases, to draw our own conclusions. What I appreciated, in fact, is that Carr doesn’t shout about negativity; instead, he ultimately urges readers to use automation to enhance work and life, and to reclaim computers “as instruments of experience…” If you always wanted your own Rosie the Robot, or if you’ve unsuccessfully tried to give up your smart phone for a day, this book will give you plenty to ponder – or to fear. Start “The Glass Cage,” and you won’t be able to put it down.

Friday Night Love Fest

H

ouston Style Magazine’s 25th Anniversary Gala extravaganza was a smashing, standing-room-only success! The fortunate few who were granted access into the wall-to-wall, star-studded event of the year at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse in the Galleria on Friday, October 3, 2014 now appreciate the fact we were holding the hottest ticket in town. Our silver anniversary celebration quickly evolved into a true love fest for our founder and publisher, Francis Page, Jr., who personally bestowed upon me the honor of being the host/emcee for our enchanted evening. I enjoyed a front row seat as the flow of bubbly accolades poured in non-stop, like Nicole Murphy’s Destiny Moscato, into the heart of one of America’s leading urban weekly publications. Murphy and her stunning entourage of gorgeous super-models and savvy business partners were in attendance, along with some of the most beautiful and successful African Americans in H-Town and beyond. Houston Rockets’ superstar, Dwight Howard was named Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Champion of Change in recognition of his numerous charitable contributions and community outreach efforts. During his entertaining and enlightening acceptance speech, Howard revealed the three secret signs he received which convinced him to leave the Los Angeles Lakers and sign with the Houston Rockets. Everyone gasped! It almost made everyone start to believe that God is a die-hard Houstonian. Howard, along with R&B’s brightest new sensation, Leela James, both found themselves instantly surrounded and swarmed by an eclectic selection of fans and corporate executives from around the country and around the world. Legendary leader and former South African President Nelson Mandela was in heaven beaming with pride as his noble grandson, Ndaba Mandela, dazzled the adoring audience as our gala’s keynote speaker. Afterwards, he was named as Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Global Humanitarian of the Year. The third generation leader of his granddad’s ANC party urged each person sitting on the edge of their seats who listened to his eloquent speech to help spread the word that over 70% of his ambitious countrymen and women are under the age of 35. He passionately reminded us that his beautiful nation

8

is fertile soil for serious education efforts and startup opportunities for entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 companies alike. Houston Style Magazine’s angelic and intelligent ambassador, Gabrielle Deculus, treated young Mandela like a royal king during his first visit to Houston. Viva South Africa! Francis Page, Jr. has been unbelievably busy for the past 25 years! It was as if everyone he knows from coast-to-coast all showed up to simultaneously say, “We love you, Francis, AND the lasting legacy you are leaving in this city.” Rarely does anyone get to wallow in the priceless moment in life where they are alive to experience the fresh fragrance of flowers called unscripted compliments from family, friends, celebrities and loyal supporters all assembled in one small banquet room for one great big group hug in your honor! Francis and Houston Style Magazine were, indeed, the toasts of the town last Friday night. New York native and Texas Southern University alumni, Tony Wyllie of the National Football League’s Washington Redskins, earned Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Hometown Hero Award as the highest ranking minority PR executive in all of sports. Houston Style Magazine’s national diva darling, the irrepressible Rebecca Briscoe, rolled out the red carpet for both future sports Hall of Famers’, Tony Wyllie and Dwight Howard. Both gentlemen brought their families with them to Del Frisco’s Steakhouse last Friday night to witness another positive moment in these gallant men’s lives. Wyllie didn’t bite his tongue as he demonstrated in living color why he holds the record as the five-time winner of the NFL’s prestigious Pete Rozelle Award as PR Executive of the Year! The fiery Cloves C. Campbell, Jr. of Arizona joined civil rights icon, Dr. Ben Chavis, to enthusiastically address the audience on behalf of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). Campbell revealed that only 200 African American publications are still in weekly or monthly circulation, and that we are among an elite group of dwindling front-line word warriors and editorial stalwarts still dedicated to sharing the dreams and struggles of the voiceless, and telling the real/raw stories of our people while never ceasing to celebrate our achievements and worthwhile accomplishments. Campbell was also fixated on Francis’ wavy black hair.

October 9 - October 15 , 2014

www.StyleMagazine.com

Those two distinguished gentlemen from the NNPA were unknowingly, but obviously, referring to Houston Style Magazine’s marvelous managing editor, Jo-Carolyn Goode, who is perhaps the hardest working member of our team. Jo seldom speaks at staff meetings because her head is always buried in her laptop. Goode is actually GREAT at guaranteeing that the feature stories you click on are well-written and worth your time, such as the amazing commemorative issue marking our 25 years of public service. Hopefully, you had a chance to pick up a free copy from one of your local newsstand. If not, it is always available online. Jo-Carolyn is a faithful soldier whom God has gifted with an eye for grammatical detail, as well as being an inspirational example of strength who encourages everyone around her to persevere in spite of their own challenging circumstances. Julie Griffith’s stylish, European sensibilities did not stop her from getting down and dirty in the Galleria last Friday night. As wave-after-wave of famous celebrities looked to someone in a leadership position to hold their hands and guide them through the gauntlet of cameras and cell phone gawkers gathered to capture the exact moment they walked through the door at Del Frisco’s to grace Houston Style Magazine with their global presence and millions of social media followers, jolly Julie was more than up to the task. Neither Dale nor the loud music of his DJ friend were a match for Griffith’s laser beam focus to escort Houston Style Magazine’s special guests to their reserved seats near the front where I stood all night. There was no place else to move due to the sold-out status of Houston Style Magazine’s grand affair. I was guilty of whispering curious observations to Dwight Howard and his sensational, statuesque companion, Christine. I accidentally kept making them both laugh and snicker during a few slightly inappropriate moments. A great time was enjoyed by all. Houston Style Magazine acknowledged our loyal business partners and some of our most exceptional corporate leaders. Magnificent Maria Rios accepted Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Legacy Award, which we reserved especially for the elegant grasp of Macy’s Department Stores. Ultra dashing James Harris accepted Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Heritage Award given to my (and your) H-E-B. Cool, cavalier Cary Yates embraced Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Triumph Award on behalf of community investment leader Wells Fargo Bank. Lavishly radiant LaShica Salter Velazquez (wife of Eric) accepted Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Visionary Award in honor of mega-giant Wal-Mart. Last, but certainly not least, Detroit’s leading lady of delightful distinction, Joycelyn Allen, accepted Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 Pinnacle Award bestowed upon Chevrolet/General Motors for being one of the best business partners in the 25 year history of Houston Style Magazine. We would have loved to give each and every one of our business partners an award as a token of our appreciation for all they do for our community – because of them our Houston Style Magazine Awards Reception would not have been as successful and entertaining. With that being said, a huge “Houston Style Magazine Thank You” to the Houston Airport System, The Fort Bend Church, MJWJ, and Hennessy. Everyone in attendance was treated to glossy red gift bags from Macy’s, filled with free surprises. Nicole Murphy and Mark Thierry received a rousing (Story continued on pg. 9)

standing ovation when they announced to everyone that they would be given specially gift-wrapped boxes containing a complimentary bottle of liquid brilliance - called their rapidly-rising Destiny Moscato brand. Houston Style Magazine was humbled to receive toast-after-toast throughout the night. Cheers everyone! Before we all departed, we were treated to two outstanding videos and two proclamations. Houston mayor pro-tem, Jerry Davis, and elected school board official, Erica Lee (beautiful daughter of U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee) each presented plaques during our Gala to Houston Style Magazine and to Ndaba Mandela. One of the videos featured President Barack Obama’s address to the NNPA, of which Francis Page, Jr. is an executive board member. The other video was a heartfelt, major highlight of the evening. It was a flawless compilation of priceless interviews, as well as a visual feast of historical milestones that reflected the heart and purpose of this publication. Reggie Dominique was the talented director and chosen videographer with the team of Dale Lamar and David Funchess who tirelessly put all the detailed pieces together in such a masterful way that Hollywood should be knocking on their door soon to tap into their impeccable skills. Reggie unselfishly shares them with Houston Style Magazine on a regular basis at Essence festivals and red carpet events everywhere as he puts the @HoustonStyle microphone into the hands of the world’s most famous people. Dominique is Houston Style Magazine’s digital advisor, home-grown prodigy and our guru of exponential, technological growth and global expansion, as well as our in-house social media savior and Twitter savant. And one can’t be remiss to thank the ones who were crafty as they created a digital space so you would always be in the know. Kermit Williams, Web-

master of Houston Style Magazine and Jeff Crump, graphic artist extraordinaire, connected the dots for your visual appeal. So, guess who was the main star of the evening? She was none other than Houston Style Magazine’s first lady, Mrs. Kristyn Page. She was the first to formally welcome each guest, and among the final vivacious voices we were all treated to. Her love for her business savvy, hyper husband is only rivaled by her devotion to his publication. Their stunningly gorgeous daughters were also in attendance, as well as Francis’ fabulously classy mother, Patti Page Rollins. The late Mr. Francis Page, Sr. was the founder and publisher of Houston Newspages. Lynn Page, the adorable daughter of the late and Mrs. Page Rollins, just sat back and absorbed all the adoration her little brother and his A team of associates were swimming in all night. Lynn has been the organizational wind beneath her brother’s wings, along with Lisa Valadez, whom Francis often refers to as ‘Momma Style’. Lisa is one of Houston Style Magazine’s editors and serves as head of the advertising department. She also spearheads Houston Style Magazine’s Latino initiative. Other team members affectionately acknowledged by our publisher include our writers and reporters Burt Levine, Dawn Paul, DeNeisha Bell, Demez White, Erynn Haskins, Susie Stillwell, Marine Douglas, Trevior Mays, Yvonne Guidry, CoCo Dishman, Jessica Crawford, Eric Ford, Lan, Yolanda Pope, Lindsay Buchanan, Jade Gold, Alaina Mayes, Mical Roy, Dr. Lovell Jones, Sloan Hood, Cecilia Smith, Raegan Allen, and Dr. Abimbola Farinde; creative director Trevor Piper; sales team member Lewis Miller; in addition to photographers Roswitha Vogler, Semetra Samuel, William Ealy and artist extraordinaire Vicky Pink, also received major compliments from Houston Style Magazine’s ownership.

Last Friday night turned into an unabashed LoveFest! It was my pleasure to serve as the host of the gala event. Joycelyn Allen and Dr. Chavis both called my spoken word poetry a rap. I guess they could feel the rhythm of the night. Whatever it was I did, I did it for love. I love Francis Page, Jr., and I will always love Houston Style Magazine – the best urban weekly publication in America.

Houston Style Magazine’s 25th Anniversary Awards Reception Photography By Vicky Pink and Roswitha Vogler n Friday, October 3, 2014, Houston Style Magazine celebrated 25 years of being Houston’s leading African American media company at their 25th Anniversary Awards Reception at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse in the Galleria. Under the theme “Reflecting on Our History, Investing in Our Future,” first Houston Style Magazine reporter and “edutainer” Erik Cork was an excellent emcee as he hosted those in attendance at the elite affair. Houston Style Magazine named Ndaba Mandela (founder, Africa Rising Foundation and grandson of Nelson Mandela) Global Humanitarian; Dwight Howard (Houston Rockets) Champion of Change; and Tony Wyllie (Senior Vice President, Washington Redskins) Hometown Hero. Also recognized were corporate partners Macy’s with the Legacy Award, H-E-B with the Heritage Award; Wal-Mart with the Visionary Award; GM with the Pinnacle Award; and Wells Fargo with the Triumph Award. The star- studded event even included a special appearance by co-founder of Destiny Moscato, model and producer of Hollywood Exes Nicole Murphy. It was the hottest ticket in town to have. Guests enjoyed photo opps with the stars, a fabulous spread with Hennessy flowing, walked away with a Macy’s swag bag and bottle of Destiny Moscato, and heard inspiring words from keynote speaker Ndaba Mandela and National Newspaper Publishers Association Chairman Cloves C. Campbell, Jr. and NNPA President Dr. Ben Chavis, Jr. Proclamations from Mayor Annise Parker and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee were presented by Mayor pro-tem Jerry Davis and Trustee Erica Lee Carter. It was an epic night for Houston Style Magazine publisher and editor Francis Page, Jr., his family, and Team Style Mag.

The breakdown of the millions has portions going to FTC for customer refunds, the states for penalties, and the Federal Communications Commission. For more information, visit money.cnn.com.
