COMMENTARY
Jesse Jackson
National Writer
W
e won the Voting Rights Act of 1965 at Selma, combining the power of a principled mass movement led by Dr. King and a compassionate president who did the right thing despite the heavy political price. What was that cost? Well, President Johnson said it best at the time, when he told his aides that we’d “just lost the South for a generation.” The civil rights movement made the moral move by marching across the bridge at Selma. LBJ did the right thing by signing the Voting Rights Act into law, knowing the price his party would pay. The Jefferson Davis Democrats in the South did the wrong thing by responding to the “Southern strategy” of Richard Nixon and the racial dog whistles of Ronald Reagan. Due to race, the once-solid Democratic South switched over to become today’s solid Republican South.
How to Win Elections Behind the Cotton Curtain Now it’s been half a century. Not just a generation, as LBJ foretold, but two-and-a-half generations -- and still the Republican Party dominates below the Mason-Dixon Line. As Rachel Maddow brought up in last week’s presidential forum, the Democratic Party in today’s South has been “hollowed out,” with only a handful of successful statewide Democratic candidates. As long as that situation exists, the Democrats will be able to win the presidency, but what about the Senate and House? The sad irony is that the South has benefitted the most from the civil rights movement, whites and AfricanAmericans together. The tearing down of the “Cotton Curtain” by the civil rights martyrs and marchers meant that the South could join our modern economy. Population jumped. The South could finally have professional sports teams. The civil rights movement forced the development of integrated football teams at Southern colleges that now dominate the sport. The Olympics could be held in Atlanta in 1996, with Muhammad Ali and Stevie Wonder at the closing ceremonies. Toyota and Mercedes Benz could locate plants in the South, providing better jobs than cotton ever had. Yet Southern politicians, stuck in the politics of fear, still poke at racial wounds for short-term success. In order to starve the government, Southern politicians still refuse to invest in infrastructure across
the region. Rebuilding our ports and harbors, investing in jobs programs that would employ white and AfricanAmerican workers, preparing our coasts to survive the future Katrina-like storms that climate change will bring, accepting the Medicaid expansion that would provide needed health care for so many families -- these public policy initiatives would develop the region even more, and open up the futures for so many young Southerners. Yet too many politicians and voters continue to choose race over reason. White working-class Southern voters continue to run from race, choosing the party that backs both tax cuts and job cuts. This is a political odd couple that makes no sense. Half a century after the Voting Rights Act, too many Southern voters are still afraid of change, even when it would benefit them. How do we break through? First of all, former DNC Chair Howard Dean was right -- we need a 50-state strategy. We need to compete everywhere in the country, from the local level to the state level to the presidency. The Democratic Party in the South needs to rebuild, to move from the outhouse to the courthouse to the statehouse to the White House. Second, candidate Barack Obama showed us how we win in the South -- with a message of hope and change, combined with a massive voter registration effort and a huge voter turnout. In 2008, that combination carried Florida, North Carolina and
Virginia. In 2012, Florida and Virginia again went blue, with North Carolina barely missing out. Third, we need to battle voter suppression. Sen. Bernie Sanders was right when he pointed out that too many Republican leaders are “cowards” for repressing the African-American vote. Bernie also mentioned universal voter registration during Rachel Maddow’s forum, and right afterwards, in an interview with Chris Matthews, he raised an idea that I have been pushing for a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to vote to every American. And we must protect and restore the power of the Voting Rights Act. Fourth, we need to invest bottom-up in the South, economically and politically. If we raise wages, provide health care for everyone and open up voter registration to all our people, hope will rise, the South will develop, and people’s lives will be better. If white working-class families choose hope over fear, their lives will improve -- and so will those of Southern Latinos and African-Americans. And Democrats will be able to win elections again. Turner Scores Endorsements to Secure December 12 Run-Off
ylvester Turner, fresh off coming in above any of his opponents in Tuesday, November 3rd’s general election, has announced he has won the endorsement of former Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia. Turner’s votes plus Garcia’s votes in the first election equal 49 percent of the total vote. Garcia, a former Houston MayorPro-Tem, three term council member and retired Houston Police Officer until recent weeks was considered Turner’s most likely competitor for Mayor of Houston. However, election results prove that spot belongs to Bill King. Turner and King will go head-to-head in a December 12th run-off election. Reflecting on his run for Houston Mayor, Adrian Garcia said, “We ran a good race, and now it’s time to come together - as all Houston - to move our city forward.” Garcia’s statement continued, “I am proud to announce I am signing up to volunteer: knock on doors, make phone calls, for Sylvester Turner for Mayor. In my book, that means I am fully endorsing Sylvester Turner, and I am asking my longtime friends, family, and supporters to do so as well.” Garcia it is suggested is angling to become the first Latino Houston Police Chief in a Turner administration but Garcia who resigned from being
much money but families that feted them with what they needed to succeed. “ We d i d n ’ t have much when it comes to dollars and cents but we were both rich in family,” Turner said before stepping aside for Garcia to speak. BOOK REVIEW By Terri
E
Wake Up Happy
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
very day, you make countless little choices. Get outta bed or go back to sleep? What’s for breakfast? Blue tie or black shirt? Which project first, what’s for lunch, dinner, after dinner, what to watch, read, discuss? All day long, you choose one thing over another; in fact, Michael Strahan says that “the average American will [make] thirty-five thousand decisions” before bedtime. In his book “Wake Up Happy” (with Veronica Chambers), he explains how one of them can be a life-changer. If you’ve ever seen Michael Strahan onscreen, you know how easy he makes his job look. He seems comfortable with stars and strangers alike, although he calls himself “a shy guy.” He says he gets nervous, but he knows how to handle himself because that’s the way he was raised. Because Strahan’s father was in the military, the family lived overseas when Strahan was still very young. “Mannheim, Germany,” he says, “was an awesome place to grow up” because of its small-town feel and because children were truly raised by a village of stay-at-home mothers. Strahan’s father was busy, but Strahan remembers the frequent one-on-one time he spent with his dad, and the advice that poured forth on those events. “In a perfect world,” Strahan says, “I’d have ninety-two [motivational] rules to match my jersey number. But in real life, I’ve found that you need only eighteen to get and stay motivated.” Rule Number One, he says is to “Be open to everything around you.” What you need, and the help to get it, can “come from the most unexpected places…” Pay attention, don’t make assumptions, and never throw away a chance to see what comes. Remember that the journey is joyful, too, so

take pleasure in it. If you want something, let your determination power your actions and keep in mind that when you’ve given your all, there’s still more to give. Know when to bow out gracefully but don’t quit a tough road; instead, know when to “hit pause.” Take the word “if” from your vocabulary. Listen to music that motivates you. Remember that “bad experiences… often teach you the most.” Keep your sense of humor. “Be excellent. “ So you’re in need of some motivation, but you don’t want something that sounds like a million bees in a hive. Instead, you’d like something fresh, and “Wake Up Happy” is what you want. Readers who have come to love author Michael Strahan on the field or on TV will be glad to know that his writing is genuine: what you see on the small screen is what you get in this book. This personable style of motivation carries through Strahan’s life story, his careers, and his love life, which has been rocky and he’s forthcoming on it all. That no-holds-barred attitude in storytelling lends trustworthiness to the lessons. This is one friendly book and it’s short enough to read twice. You’ll probably want to do that anyhow because, when you need a book to boost your confidence, “Wake Up Happy” is a good choice. S h a r e t h i s s t o r y o n l i n e a t w w w. stylemagazine.com.

HEALTH
Sex in The City
By Jade Gold, Health Writer
I
could imagine Carrie of “Sex of the City” sitting at her laptop and trying to find the most eloquent way of describing how sex and fitness go hand in hand especially living in the Big Apple. But what about right here in HTown, where everything is BIGGER, including our weight, the portions of food that we eat, our reputation for Houston being #4 on the “Fattest Cities” to live (and creeping up the charts to #2) and what effects does this have on the dating scene and our sex lives? Well, I decided this made for interesting conversation and took the question to the streets. I Jade Gold asked, “Why do you think Sex n Fitness go hand in hand?” The responses were definitely entertaining to say the least, but some quite educational. Let’s take a look at what Houstonians had to say. Monica Age 41: I personally think men want a woman to be physically fit, but then think nothing of having a beer gut, saggy man boobs and less than noticeable other physical features I would be attracted to. It’s one sided. Men want what they are not willing to do. John Age 56: I have been into fitness all my life. It makes me feel good knowing I have a reason to be confident in my appearance. It’s hard to find women that take pride in their body especially over the age of 50 and sexually I’m not attracted to girls in their 20’s. It’s a challenge at any age, but sexually over 50 it’s down right difficult. Donald Age 33: Being overweight has been a problem all my life. Needless to say, I think other men who have put the work in to make their bodies look good do have better sex lives than someone like me. I’m just not motivated, I don’t have time, so I realize my options may be limited and deal with it. Kenneth Age 27: Why do women think men cheat? Because visually they are not appealing to us. All men want a woman with a nice body and truth be told it’s very few men that want a fat-overweight woman. I don’t buy into that, “I’m just happy being fat” crap or “You have to learn to love your curves.” That’s just a bunch of BS and another reason to say you’re too lazy to do something about it. People just don’t want to be honest, but men want a woman with toned body that looks and acts like she cares about what she looks like. Felecia Age 40: Sex and fitness, hummm, never really thought about it. I personally don’t like going to the gym, as I don’t want to get too bulky, I think my sex life is just fine whether I go to the gym or not. I’ve always had great self-esteem and don’t really have time to spend hours in the gym. If a man can’t love me the way I am, oh well. His loss. Pastor X Age 45: There is a direct relationship to sex appeal, sexual relationship and fitness indeed. Not speaking in biblical terms, but many occurrences you see in the church unfortunately have to do with wondering eyes. Both men and women alike. Many don’t want to admit it or talk about it, but it’s true. We want to blame the woman or the man that choose to keep their body in top condition for being attractive, sexually appealing and desirable, but I would challenge the many singles, husbands and wives that don’t choose fitness as part of their daily regimen to examine why they think so little of how they take care of their bodies. God speaks quite a bit biblically about caring for our temple. While I’m not making any claims of what’s right or wrong, there is no denying the two go hand in hand. There is a problem inside and outside of the church and it goes far beyond just the sex and fitness, but cuts right into the actual health of many congregations across the state and the city. We could really strengthen the health of the overall body of Christians if we could get them to understand how important fitness is across many areas of their lives. Davon 17: Most guys my age are looking for butt and boobs. I’m just saying. But nowadays even girls my age don’t even think about going to the gym much less being in good shape. I’m a football player. I think I have an image, I live a fit life and I’m not sleeping with a girl that’s fat and out of shape. It just tells me what she thinks of her own body and why should I care if she doesn’t. So, there you have it folks! I actually have over 150 responses some of which I couldn’t reprint here if I wanted to, but you get the point. While we may all have our own personal opinions on the topic, there are some scientific reasons that have been studied in great length as to why the two go hand in hand. So until the next chapter of “Sex In City” stay tuned more to come on this topic. For more stories by Jade Gold, visit www.FaceBook.com/JadeGoldFitness

Sylvester Turner’s Limitlessness Dreams for a Better Houston
Sylvester Turner
S
ylvester Turner is working hard to earn everyone’s vote in the Houston mayor’s race. Since the beginning of 2014, Turner has met with individuals, organizations and community groups across the city, listening to their concerns and discussing his plans for the city. As Houstonians head to the polls next month for the city runoff elections, Turner wants everyone to know that we’re all in this together and that everyone will have a seat at the table when he’s mayor. “Houston is a wonderful, vibrant, diverse and successful city,” Turner says. “But not everyone is part of that success. We have to ensure that all Houstonians have access to good-paying jobs, safe neighborhoods, excellent education and amenities like parks and libraries.” Turner’s vision for Houston’s future is rooted
in his own experience as a lifelong Houstonian. He grew up one of nine kids in a two-bedroom house in Acres Homes. His father, who died when he was 13 years old, painted houses for a local company and operated a yard service on the weekends. His mother worked as a maid in the old Rice Hotel. They taught Turner everything he knows about the importance of hard work, community and dreaming big. They gave him the confidence to believe in the limitlessness of his future. That’s why, as a kid, Turner would take the bus from the north side to downtown and walk up Main Street dreaming of one day working in one of those tall buildings. He believed that his dream was within his power to achieve. And today, the business he started 32 years ago is located in one of those big downtown buildings.
“I am running for mayor to make sure that today’s young people have the opportunity to pursue their dreams, just like I did,” says Turner. “That starts with providing a city that is well run, clean and safe, with an infrastructure that supports a good quality of life – and that treats everyone who lives here equally and with dignity and respect.” Turner explains that there is a top tier of challenges that our next mayor will need to address, including the need for safer neighborhoods, improved roads and infrastructure, stronger support for our public schools and careful management of our budget. But he adds to that list a big challenge that his opponents are not addressing: ensuring that Houston’s progress and promise are truly benefitting all of our communities, not just a select few. “We are a world-class city with the resources and wherewithal to meet the fundamental needs of all of our families and to provide real opportunity in every community, says Turner. “But right now, Houston’s economy is working a lot better for some of our communities than for others. In fact, economic inequality has sharply increased here over the past 30 years and too many Houstonians are shut out of our prosperity. Our economy is strongest when our middle class is thriving and when all our residents have access to good-paying jobs. Making the long-term strategic
Sylvester Turner
decisions that will expand opportunity throughout the city is the key responsibility of our next mayor.” Turner is optimistic about the future of Houston and knows that this city is a place where if you can dream it, you can do it. Together, we can do great things. For more information on Turner’s campaign, go to www.sylvesterturner.com. Sylvester Turner

Houston Rockets Come Up Short Against the Brooklyn Nets
he Houston Rockets came up short on Wednesday night after winning 4 straight continuing their up and down season. James Harden cooled off only scoring 23 points with a poor shooting night going 8-22 from the field and 3-10 from 3-point range. Dwight Howard seems to be getting back to that form that helped the Rockets make a deep playoff run with 17 points and 20 rebounds but most importantly playing 37 minutes. Even with those numbers the Rockets still came up short and it was mostly due to defensive breakdowns, a lack of team chemistry on the court and poor shooting. What’s most concerning about this team is that they still haven’t found a consistent stretch four and a consistent 3rd scorer. If James Harden doesn’t have a great night the games become tossups. Brooklyn got their first win
of the year behind 16 points and 10 assist from Joe Johnson and a balanced attack with 5 players in double figures. The coaches told the story of the night. Houston coach Kevin McHale said. “We haven’t caught a rhythm yet. I’ve said it all since we’ve been together. We haven’t been able to put together long runs of just good, solid basketball.” With Brooklyn coach Lionell Hollins just happy his team is building something said, “When you do get a victory, you can say: ‘Hey, this is what we’re talking about.’ Because in that victory, there’s a lot of things that I’ve been preaching and other coaches have been preaching.” Next up for Houston is a Denver team they lost to early in the season, hopefully they get back on a winning streak with Ty Lawson playing his old team. ENTERTAINMENT
Houston Get Ready for Cirque du Soleil’s TORUK!
By Raegan Boutte, Entertainment Writer
H
ouston, I hope you are ready for the newest and grandest mythical production yet from Cirque Du Soleil. I got to dive in and experience Cirque Du Soleil’s TorukThe First Flight. And I can tell you from seeing this production first hand that you don’t want to miss it. Inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar, Toruk, like Avatar, is a mythical tale set thousands of years before the events happened in Avatar. Led by an actual storyteller, the story of Toruk follows three young adults - Ralu, Entu, and Tsyal as they set on a journey to find Toruk to ride it for the first time and save the Na’vi clans from destruction that dwell on Pandora. Toruk, in the Na’vi language, refers to the great leonopteryx, the mighty red and orange predator that rules the sky in Pandora. Creative Directors Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon started working on an idea for a production such as Toruk seven years ago. What they ended ultimately creating was something much more than they imagined. Toruk is the combined creation of the world of Avatar with the signature style of Cirque and the artistic vision of both Lemaieux and Pilon. The results of all these things is not only a spectacular show, but a multimedia spectacle of cutting edge visuals, puppetry, a dramatic cinematic score, and an engaging interactive fan experience that prompts you to become part of the live show. Unlike the other shows, this show from Cirque du Soleil will also feature a voiced actor. It’s the first of it its kind for Cirque Du Soleil and I was excited to be given a back stage pass to get a first glimpse into the making of this fascinating production for Cirque Du Soleil’s Toruk’s Media Day.
My itinerary started with an introductory overview of the show with the production’s two main Creative Directors. It was cool to get this insight of the show and learned about their unique vision and direction in creating it. Gaining a better understanding of the creative process really allowed me to appreciate all aspects of the show in an entirely different way. Here are just a few fascinating things that I learned. Toruk’s stage is a giant virtual space with huge screens. The performance stage is 85 by 162 feet and is covered by a natural color fabric that aids in creating the various backdrops. Pandora, where the production is set, has rich detailed terrain and lush landscapes that appear as a landscaped image projected onto the fabric surface. The realistic visuals
of this show I was also able to meet with talented costume and makeup designer Kym Barrett and Puppeteer Designer Patrick Martel. The show’s costume director gave us an inside look into what its like to be transformed into one of the many characters of the show like the Na’vi clans that occupy Pandora.
you have to visualize not only the look of the puppet but also the design of all it parts and the puppets will ultimately move. I’ve seen a similar types of puppets in the musical the Lion King, but with Toruk Puppeteer Martel takes it a step further with lights that illuminate the puppets’ bodies and giant eyes giving them a larger than life affect while in the dark. The main challenge here for the actors was learning how to move effortlessly with the puppet because each puppet weighs 23 pounds. Martel explained that you have to really be in great shape to be able to carry and handle one. At the end of the tour I had the opportunity to chat it up with a few of the show’s main performers. Not only did I learn that the performers are rehearsing 12 hours a day seven days a week, but many are trained acrobats, aerialists and dancers and come from all over the world. The performers I talked to expressed immersed excitement of being apart of something so creative and profound. Many of them at Cirque Du Soleil are grateful for the opportunity to not just entertain audiences, but also to invoke, evoke, and provoke the audience with such a fascinating story. What I found to be the best things about this experience was being able to meet

make you feel as though you’ve landed on another planet. It is so surreal and you immediately feel immersed into the show. Expect to see magical floating mountains along with lucent starry skies. The video projections are extended to the ceilings and into the audience to make you feel as though you are on Pandora too. Many of the projections overflow inside the arena so expect a multimedia virtual world experience unlike anything you have seen before. During the first look experience
There are only 35 performers in Toruk and 115 costumes in the show. Twentyfive different variations were use to create the base of the Na’vi costumes. Synthetic fiber was used to create the skin like fabric and bioluminescent fabrics and paint was used to allow the costumes to glow in the dark. Pretty cool. Another great fact about Cirque De Soleil Toruk was its use of puppetry. Life size puppets are used to personify the beast like exotic fauna in the show. Puppeteer Patrick Martel took us into his world and shared the design process that each puppet went through. It took weeks of work to conceptually come up with the current design. He explained that
the creative team behind Toruk and see all the artistic components come together. It is going to be an experience fans of the movie will indeed love. Toruk ~ The First Flight, will embark on it’s USA tour beginning November 12th, in Shreveport, Louisiana and opens in Houston on Feb 11-14 2016. The Attention Getting GMC Canyon
B By Jo
Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
ehind the wheel of a truck a woman better be ready for one thing, lots of attention. There is still somewhat of a stigma that because trucks are tough women are sometimes looked at strange for driving them. So it never fails that when I review a truck I know that I will grab almost as much attention as the truck. After getting over the fact that yes a girl was driving, I got lots of positive responses about the 2015 GMC Canyon 4WD SLT Short Box that I reviewed this week. Note that the Canyon is also has configurations as an Extended Cab, a 5-foot bed, a 6-foot bed, a 4×2 or a 4×4. My yardman in particular was really blown away by the outward appeal of the GMC Canyon exterior. “I have never seen a truck like this,” he commented. I have to admit it is a really sweet truck. Sitting on 18” polished cast aluminum wheels with all season black wall tires, the Canyon is quite the attention grabber. Blame it on the color of money but I absolutely adore the emerald green metallic color of my review truck. The green color coupled with chrome accents really made the LED lighting of the headlamps, running lamps, fog lamps with the chrome bumper and heated folding mirrors stand out. The front end of the Canyon is bold with a chrome grille that is prominently displays the badge of the GMC brand. Chisel lines and features give a beast mode appeal to this mid-size truck. Useful exterior features include the corner step on the rear bumper allowing easy access to the truck bed with the EZ lift and lower tailgate. Inside the cabin was my favorite part about being in the GMC Canyon because I love sitting up high. It gives the feel like you have superiority on the road, especially here in Texas where trucks are king. Trucks in general sit on higher frames because they need the ground clearance for off road capability. The higher frame can be a disadvantage for shorter individuals who may need a boost to get in the cabin. Recognizing that, the Canyon has a lift step to give you a boost in accessing the cabin. The driver will feel royal behind the wheel in the Canyon as their butt is hugged by the bucket seats and comforted by the 4 way powered seat with lumbar support. On those rare days in Texas when cold air rolls in, one can stay warm with heated front seats. Other luxuries include GMC Intellilink with 8-inch color screen with text message alerts and Siri eyes free. Performance is improved on the GMC Canyon with the introduction of the 4-cyclinder and 6-cyclinder engines and for the 2016 model year a turbo diesel engine is available. Fuel economy estimates are 17-mpg city and 24-mpg highway. I found driving to be quite enjoyable. Since this was a midsize truck I didn’t have a difficult time driving or parking. Plus there are so many conveniences like the rearview camera, collision alert, and lane departure warning to assist with that. The truck came equip with Stabilitrak with traction control for better handling and antilock brakes. The GMC Canyon starts pricing at $36,950 but my review vehicle was $41,705 with upgrades that included chrome detailing, color upgrade, technology, driver alert package and a few other bells and whistles. TRAVEL

W
ho would have thought that a place that is synonymous with Prince and the movie Purple Rain would leave such a smile on my face!! Upon flying direct to Minneapolis, this southern girl had no idea what to expect. Was I to bring a thicker jacket, would it be extremely rural, and would the people be cold as ice? However to my initial belief, my stay in Minneapolis was the total opposite. My vacation there was so therapeutic from the sights, sounds, shopping, and my dining experience was remarkable!! Getting around on the city’s public transportation was a breeze, and yes the people are very friendly. Once I got off the airplane, I felt like a rockstar from the lights, camera, and action! (literally) I couldn’t believe that the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport loved my travel swag so much they featured me in their online publication. After getting my luggage, I did as Minneapolitans do and caught Metro Transit. The Metro rail system whisked me away from the airport in minutes to my destination of tranquility: Loews Minneapolis. I walked in and felt like royalty from the attentive staff, beautiful décor, and my very own hotel suite. The architecture at the Loews Minneapolis is refined luxury from the wooden floors, impeccable service, and unforgettable dining experiences. Staying here was a dream attached with some major luxurious spoils. Did you know that the Loews Minneapolis has a suite especially for Prince, yes the purple man himself? You don’t have to take my word for it, but Loews Minneapolis was recently named the best hotel of the state by MSN Travel. The hi rise hotel has 251 rooms that are equipped with etched-glass headboards, custom mattresses, flat screened TVs, maple wood accents, full service spa, Wi-Fi, free fitness studio, along with some serious walkability to and from downtown Minneapolis. This hotel is nestled in the heart of the hustle and bustle of downtown Minneapolis with First Avenue Club right across the street (venue for the movie Purple Rain), Target Center which is home to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx across the street, The Mayo Clinic and Target Field the official home of the Minnesota Twins. @loews_hotels www.loewshotels.com/minneapolis-hotel/

Murray’s Steakhouse Murray’s was started by husband and wife team, Art & Marie Murray in 1946. The couple opened the restaurant on 6th St where it still remains today. Murray’s Steakhouse was the best steak I have ever eaten in my life!! I am a true Texan, but when I think of succulent steak I relish on the filet I devoured at Murray’s. The steak melted in my mouth along with the freshly whipped potatoes, homemade mac and cheese, and garlic butter toast. Their mixologist on staff is just as great who can make the best signature or traditional cocktails.
