Obama’s Legacy: Defining the Course Forward

Jesse Jackson

he president has paid his courtesies to the Republican leaders who now control the Congress. Mitch McConnell has indicated that he’s prepared to cooperate with the president, if he’s prepared to capitulate. Others, like Senator Ted Cruz, have declared that the scorched earth obstruction will continue. The real question is how President Obama acts. Many talking heads urge him to find common ground -on fast track trade authority, on tax breaks for multinationals, on various “reforms” of Obamacare, on lifting restrictions on exporting natural gas. He can, he’s told, consolidate his “legacy” by getting things done. But these accomplishments take the country in the wrong direction. They deal with none of the true challenges facing the country. Why tax breaks for corporations that already capture a record percentage of the national income? Why more corpo-

acing breezes mindful of fields where America’s Veterans have met to stand for justice for centuries, State Rep. Ron Reynolds, his family & friends, pastors and people reaching from all areas of his diverse district huddled at the Fort Bend Justice Center on Veteran’s Day following Judge Lisa Michalk’s declaring a mistrial in Reynolds’ barratry case. “This day we remember the armistice signed 96 years ago to end WW I, service members that sacrificed in that war to end all wars and everyone in our country’s history that’s worn our country’s uniform committed to its cause. This day we know our battles for justice and liberty are not over in the sands where our patriots stand or here where we stand,” Reynolds said. Reynolds was backed by his attorney Vivian King, Fort Bend Pct. 2 Constable Ruben Davis, Fort Bend Pastors Association President Rev. Theodore Deaver, Missouri City NAACP President Doc Holiday, Rev. James Nash, Minister Deric Muhammad, Minister Quanell X, Young Republicans Board Secretary Sandra Wagar and a bulwark of U.S. and Texas Flag waving business, schools, civic and other community leaders. “I thank God for His grace and mercy and support of my constituents. I’ve always maintained my innocence,” said Reynolds. “As an American and Texan I put full faith in our criminal justice system that I’d be

rate trade treaties that ship good jobs abroad? Why join in denying the reality of catastrophic climate change? Instead, the president can and should make his legacy clear by defining what his presidency stands for. He needs to address the pressing challenges facing this country -- and contrast that starkly with the wrong-headed corporate and special interest agenda of Republicans. Here are five ways he can help secure a true legacy that points the way forward: In foreign policy, he can open a new chapter with neighbors in our own hemisphere. A bold first step would be to issue executive orders doing what he can to ease the boycott, open up travel and normalize relations with Cuba. Our failed policy toward Cuba now isolates the U.S. in its own hemisphere. An opening to Cuba could be the dramatic step needed to open real cooperation on economic development, drug trafficking, public health and immigration. In economic policy he should, as promised, push as far as possible toward immigration reform. It is vital that the millions now locked in the shadow economy be liberated from the exploitation that allows. That is not only humane; it lifts the bottom of the economy helping all. Republicans

argue that if he acts unilaterally, they will never pass comprehensive reform, but they have already made it clear that sensible reforms will never pass this Republican Congress. On basic justice, the president can use his bully pulpit and his pen to accelerate the attorney general’s efforts to reform our racially troubled criminal justice system from police practices to judicial sentencing. He can ensure that the events in Ferguson -- too frequently mirrored in communities across the country -- help crystallize a bold agenda for reform. He can convene governors, mayors, public safety officials and civil rights and citizen leaders to drive that reform. On inequality, the president likely will have to wield his veto pen to counter Republican efforts to offer more tax breaks for the rich while cutting basic investment in support for the vulnerable. One effort the president can make on his own is to issue a Good Jobs Executive Order. Now he should put government on the side of good employers, giving preference to employers who pay their employees well, don’t allow excessive CEO pay, respect workplace laws and allow their employees the right to organize. We will never rebuild the middle class unless workers regain the right to nego-

tiate for a fair share of the profits and productivity that they help to produce. On national security, the president should turn our attention to the real security threats that have no military response. In addition to issuing new regulations on carbon emissions from power plants, he could describe the extreme crisis we now face from climate change, and detail how meeting that challenge can be a source of good jobs, better foods, better transport and healthier communities. He should lay out a bold agenda to capture the lead in the green industrial revolution that must sweep the world -- and make it clear who is standing in the way. The president still has the best pulpit in the land. He can still help Americans understand the challenges that can no longer be ducked and the bold steps needed to meet them. His proposals will be dead on arrival in the Republican Congress. His words will be mocked by conservative hawks. But he can define the choice, and that may be the most important legacy of all. cent white and the Census lists it as 4.7 percent black. On the first day of Reynolds’ trial a sign was posted in front of the Courthouse (a building being used as an election site at the time) encouraging people to vote against President Obama, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Attorney General Eric Holder for being “race-baiters” and “poverty pimps” despite none of them being on the ballot this election. “In 2014, its shameful racial issues happen. I’ve never made my career about race. I never wanted to until this case. I experienced injustice in Montgomery County, one of the most conservative monolithic counties in Texas, if not the country,” Reynolds said. “Simply, I’m a victim of selective prosecution and racial bias. This experience has echoed the fact hundreds of thousands of black males and other minorities face each year. Unfortunately, many innocent victims are ensnared in criminal justice because they lack knowledge and resources for a costly defense. As an African-American, you don’t get a benefit of doubt in the legal system but I fought back and found resources to fight back,” he said. Reynolds’ attorney, Vivian King, said, “We stood alone in the courthouse as did the only African-American juror who spoke up.”

Reynolds added, “I’m extraordinarily grateful to the good people of Montgomery County who came forward to do their civic duty and serve as jurors.” “In particular, one juror exemplified great courage in disclosing jurors who allowed information about other co-defendants who previously took plea deals to influence their views. This highlights that African-Americans, regardless of economics, aren’t immune to racial bias. I was elected in one of Texas’ most diverse districts by the people of that district to serve all HD-27. I plan to be a fighter for change in criminal justice,” he said. Reynolds continued, “In the last session, we passed tort reform with loser pay provisions to help reduce frivolous lawsuits being filed. Next session, I’ll conduct a study to make it more difficult for prosecutors to bring frivolous claims against someone without recourse. As elected officials, we must be prudent stewards of public’s trust.” Constable Davis said, “I’ve been in law enforcement for 40 years. Reynolds is an honest man. I was proud to attend court with him to support him at his trial. I don’t understand why they keep bringing these baseless claims against him.” Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

judged by evidence presented at trial and not the color of my skin or I’m a Democrat state representative.” On Monday, Nov. 10, the court overturned six counts of misdemeanor solicitation of professional employment by Reynolds. Michalk declared a mistrial in the case after a juror said there was discussion during deliberations about other attorneys in related cases who plead no contest to same changes. The jury also found Reynolds not guilty of 11 counts of felony barratry charges. The case is now scheduled to go to trial Monday, Jan. 5, eight days before the start of the 84th Legislative session when Reynolds, who was elected last week with nearly 70 percent of the vote in his definitively diverse district, is scheduled to be sworn into his third term. The case was held in Montgomery County, a county that has not voted Republican in a US Presidential race since 1964. The county is 70 per-

Actor Romany Malco Comes “Back To Baytown” to Inspire Today’s Youth and living an extraordinary life. “We are the immaculate perception of how we perceive ourselves. What you whisper to yourself at night…that’s what you really are.” – Romany Malco

Romany Malco

M

erriam-Webster defines success as the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame. Comedian/Actor Romany Malco returned to the town that adopted him as a teen simply to refute that definition, educate today’s youth on success, and inspire them to live an extraordinary life with his “Back To Baytown” event. If you haven’t read his biography, Romany is a Trinidad native who was raised in both the Caribbean and New York. As a teen, he moved to Baytown, East of Houston, TX. His breakout role was in the 2005 hit movie “The 40 –Year-Old-Virgin” where he co-starred alongside fellow comedian, Steve Carell. This past weekend, November 6-8th, the “Think Like a Man” star organically gave generously of himself as he met with fans and spoke to students. The ultimate goal? Simply to change the lives of youth by giving them insight on what success looks like so they could redefine success for their own lives. He did this through discussions of “introspection, forgiveness, diversity, empathy, and

8

how crippling blame can be.” “Don’t seek love seek purpose and let love find you.” – Romany Malco Romany talked openly about his childhood. “My father was an alcoholic, and my mother wasn’t ever emotionally stable,” he told Houston Style Magazine. “This is what I was explaining to the students today. Most times we [comedians] quite often come from some of the most traumatic situations. I was able to detect it well in advance and develop the ability to quell the situation. It was my survival personality that I created for the sanity and the sanctity of my household that eventually became my career.” Malco shared this part of his life with Baytown’s youth to encourage them to develop ways to process pain and use it [pain] as a way to inform them of their purpose. In turn, they will utilize their purpose as a way to determine how they will serve on the planet; truly being successful

November 13 - November 19, 2014

www.StyleMagazine.com

So what is success and an “extraordinary” life? The “Think Like A Man” star continued, “The idea of success is the acquisition of things, social status, and monetary gain - all three of which are synonymous with debt and can be accomplished without having a sense of purpose. As a result you never have a sense of personal fulfillment and as a result of that you are enslaved by this wheel. You buy more work, and you never get to experience what it is to have a life because this type of success is a temporary fulfillment. The extraordinary life is freedom and freedom is the ability to explore without fear of consequence to truly live.” He explained in depth how to have a career in entertainment; it takes 100% of you working hard all the time until your career is built. There’s no diluting the efforts. “This job (entertainment) requires everything. It takes about 15 years to build a career… ALL of you for 15 years and there’s a lot of collateral damage with that.” He wanted the youth to pull away with a sense of waiting for what is perceived to be the “life” and actually using the time that they have now to develop qualities that will lead them down a road “less traveled”; their actual dreams. “Most kids do not aspire to lead an ordinary life, they set out to lead an extraordinary life,” he told Houston Style Magazine. However, kids sometimes get off track and get distracted by the opposite sex, fast money, clothes, and other material things. Malco said one has to be focused and be willing to put in the hard work, period. Malco had to focus himself to determine his career goals. Medicare Open Enrollment What Will You Find During Medicare Open Enrollment? October 15 - December 7 By U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Y

our health needs change from year to year. And, your health plan may change the benefits and costs each year too. That’s why it’s important to review your Medicare choices each fall. Compare your current plan to new options and see if you can lower some costs or to find a plan that better suit your needs. Open Enrollment is the one time of year when ALL people with Medicare can see what new benefits Medicare has to offer and make changes to their coverage. Whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll still have the same benefits and security you have now:

• Certain preventive benefits – including cancer screenings – are

available at no cost to you when provided by qualified and participating health professionals. The annual wellness visit lets you sit down with your doctor and discuss your health care needs and the best ways to stay healthy.

• Medicare will notify you about plan performance and use its online Plan Finder to encourage enrollment in quality plans.

• In 2015, if you reach the “donut hole” in Medicare’s prescription

drug benefit, you’ll get a 55% discount on covered brand name drugs and see increased savings on generic drugs. It’s worth it to take the time to review and compare, but you don’t have to do it alone. Medicare is available to help. Visit Medicare.gov/find-a-plan to compare your current coverage with all of the options that are available in your area, and enroll in a new plan if you decide to make a change.

• Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) 24-hours a day/7 days a week to find out more about your coverage options. TTY users should call 1-877486-2048.

• Review the Medicare & You 2015 handbook. It’s mailed to people with Medicare in September.

If you have limited income and resources, you may be able to get Extra Help paying your prescription drug coverage costs. For more information, visit socialsecurity. gov/i1020 or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. TTY users should call 1-800-325-0778.

• Get one-on-one help from your State Health Insurance Assistance Program

(SHIP). Visit Medicare.gov/contacts or call 1-800-MEDICARE to get the phone number. For more information, visit Medicare.gov.

Remembering Dr. Myles Munroe Photography by Vicky Pink and Ken Jones

D

r. Myles Munroe once said, “The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life without a purpose.” His was a life full of purpose. His works and words will forever live on through the many people he touched. Before he was the internationally known Dr. Myles Munroe, he was simply Myles, Myles Egbert Munroe to be exact. He came from humble beginnings. Born in 1954 in Nassau, Bahamas, he was one of eleven children. It was while he was a teen that he would learn of Jesus Christ and dedicate his life to God. With collegiate education from Oral Roberts University, University of Tulsa, and honorary doctorates he founded Bahamas Faith Ministries International. Later he would become a leader in the business world with the founding of Myles Munroe International. It was under these ministries that he would do his greatest life’s work. Millions around the world have relied on the teachings of Dr. Myles Munroe as he spread his message of living a purpose filled life. For the last thirty years he has traveled the world and made many visits to Houston to inspire and challenge all those fortunate enough to hear do better with what God has given them. In addition to being a preacher of God’s word, Dr. Munroe was a brilliant motivational speaker and author. With more than 38 books under his belt, he was often featured on the best sellers’ list. He was killed in a plane crash with his wife Ruth Munroe and seven others. The party was on their way to the Freeport, Bahamas for the Global Leadership Forum that Dr. Munroe organized. Mourning the loss of Dr. Munroe and his wife Ruth are the couple’s children Myles Munroe Jr., Charisa Munroe, and a host of family, friends, and supporters. Final funeral arrangements for the Munroes have not been made. Visit the website for updates at: www.mylesmunroeinternational.com.

Remembering Our Friend, Dr. Myles Munroe

M

inister Myles Munroe was a great man! He was a great leader to us and to millions of others and more specifically to our dear friend Deavra Daughtry who first introduced us to Minister Monroe and his beautiful wife Ruth at the Texas Women’s Empowerment Foundation (TWEF) conference several years ago. At that conference he blessed my wife and I and called us a “Power Couple” and blessed our marriage. We will never forget that special blessing and enjoyed seeing and learning from him over the years at TWEF. We were so honored to support TWEF and to have known this TRUE Power Couple of God. --Francis & Kristyn Page

BOOK REVIEW Unretirement Chris Farrell By

Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

F

By

or much of your employed life, you dreamed about not having to work. Retirement would be great. It would stretch out for years, a horizon with no alarm clock and no deadlines. What will you do with it? Chances are, says author Chris Farrell, believe it or not, you’ll go to work. And in his new book “Unretirement,” he says you’ll do it because you want to, not because you have to. It’s a statistic that has some politicians very worried: within the next fifteen years, say demographers, the sixty-five-plus population of America will be nearly equivalent to the current population of New York, California, and Texas combined. That’s a lot of retirees, and a fortune paid out in benefits. For quite some time, though, economists and pessimists have expressed doubts that Social Security will even be around then. Others bemoan the amount of retirement savings that many Baby Boomers (the age group retired or soon retiring) don’t have. According to Farrell, however, these fears ignore the fact that most Boomers are re-thinking the way retirement will work for them. He says that Boomers’ “last third of life is being reimagined and reinvented into ‘unretirement.’” They are, for instance, looking at Social Security as a supplement, rather than a sole income – and even then, they’re putting off collecting it. That’s the way it should be, says Farrell: Social Security is sound – it only needs “some tweaks to shore up its finances for the long haul” – but because of longer lifespans and better health, retirees should be encouraged to file later, unless they absolutely can’t wait. And those late filers? They’re seeing work in a whole different way: the rate of senior entrepreneurship is up, and so is gradual retirement. They’re staying on the job longer, are finding second (or even third) careers, or are volunteering. And despite that age discrimination can be a real issue, many workplaces have finally recognized the experience and reliability of older workers who are, in many cases, perfectly happy with part-time jobs. In short, Boomers have been “behind many changes in the workplace over the past four decades,” and they’re definitely not done. Your IRA is fat and you like it that way. But how, when the time comes, will you use it? Read “Unretirement,” and you might have a different answer to that question. With intriguing statistics and a thoughtful tone, author Chris Farrell pooh-poohs pundits who decry the viability of Social Security and avow the belief that retirement-resistant seniors take jobs from younger workers by showing that doom-and-gloom prophesies and myths aren’t warranted or true. Along the way, he examines healthcare and the ACA, aging, home ownership, mentorship with (and from) younger workers, the history of retirement itself, and how other countries perceive their “gray revolution.” While I’d say that this book is absolutely for Boomers, it’s also, surprisingly, something that Gen X’ers should check out, too. If you’ve already retired, are about to, or have worked all your life so you don’t have to work someday, “Unretirement” is unmissable. For more information, visit stylemagazine.com.
