Missouri Students and Athletes Teach a Lesson In Nonviolent Change captain Pee Wee Reese stood by Jackie Robinson out on the ball field, making it clear that the color line had been crossed for good. Now the University of Missouri football team has shown us what real “Tigers” do when it’s time to pick up the hammer of justice. These African-American players stood by the student protesters and hunger striker Jonathan Butler. Interestingly, their white teammates and their white coach, Gary Pinkel, then joined the cause, too. And change came to the campus. The students and the athletes showed that they had studied Dr. King and the lessons of the civil rights movement. They were disciplined, nonviolent, focused -- and they used their leverage to demand a role in their own educations. Strategically, they chose a moment to act when they had leverage over a million dollars in potential TV revenues. It was smart organizing, and it worked. As the old saying goes, rabbit hunting is a lot less fun when the rabbit has a gun. In this case, of course, the “gun” was nonviolent protest against racial injustice. African-American athletes showed their clout. A sleeping giant awoke. Today’s colleges spend a lot
of time recruiting African-American athletes but much less time recruiting young African-American scholars. No expense is spared to develop a young halfback, but fewer and fewer Pell Grants are available to support young chemists. Good athletes are awarded scholarships (unless they get hurt), while their universities reap millions in tickets sales and revenue from jerseys and sports bling. Athletic departments are supposed to be appendages of universities, but it often appears that the reverse is true. African-American players are empowered on the field, but much less so in the classroom. Think about college basketball. The entire sports world focuses on “March Madness,” when integrated teams from all over the nation compete for sports glory. But what about “May Sadness,” when graduation time comes, and many athletes are left behind and left out. Meanwhile, good minority students -- and many, many good white students -- struggle to pay excessive tuition and fees, too often ending up buried under massive loans which will hem them in for decades. On Saturday afternoons, those of us who are sports fans choose to root for our teams based on uniform color rather than skin color. This was not always so. It’s a change in American
culture that deserves celebration. And it teaches us a lesson for the rest of society, because young AfricanAmericans can compete and excel when the playing field is level, when the rules are public, when the goals are transparent, when the referees are fair. Our sports playing fields are level, and our teams are diverse, multicultural, multiracial and successful. Our societal playing fields are not so level, are less diverse, and the rewards are less evenly shared. College campuses are good places to learn this lesson and to begin to discuss how to do better. We have learned to survive apart as individuals; but in the globalized 21st century -- where most people are yellow, brown, black, non-Christian, poor, female, young and don’t speak English -- we need to learn how to live together to prosper. The Missouri student/athlete protests just taught us a lesson in nonviolent change. We should learn from it. You can write to the Rev. Willie Davis Wants a Houston That Works
Burt Levine, Political Writer
illie Davis is a big man with big energy, a big smile, a big handshake with a big embrace and big plans. A highly decorated Vietnam War Veteran, he was big enough to survive combat from eight candidates to make the December 12th run-off for Houston City Council At Large Pos. 1 and might be big enough with his big personality to beat incumbent David Robinson across all Houston’s 640 square miles. Early Vo t i n g b e g i n s D e c e m b e r 2 n d . “The Third Ward was a tough community growing up,” said Davis, speaking from the Third Ward Church he built and pastors today and of his childhood in a home with 10 siblings and a strict single mother. “We had very little money. It was a hard time. But what we did have was each other.” Davis went to Houston’s Jack Yates and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School before he married a pastor’s daughter and volunteered for the US Army at the height of the Vietnam War. He was deployed in First Special Forces (Green Berets) and served as Company and Battalion Administrator. The fighting spirit he earned in southcentral Houston and the army never left. “I’ve been fighting for bringing social services to neighborhoods in need and against police brutality. On city council I will fight that

transportation dollars be spent wisely for our community street repairs, for the protection and prosperity of all Houston’s diverse communities and I will demand fiscal discipline and a balanced budget from our city’s department heads,” he said. What Davis became most famous for the past year was his fight against the city’s Prop. 1 or HERO (Houston Equal
Nov 19 - Nov 25, 2015
Rights Ordinance) that was beat on November 3rd big time 61 to 59 percent reaching its highest ballot counts in African American areas in Districts B, D and K where concern was the public safety and security issues voters said it threatened against women, family, children and small business owners. Almost immediately after Mayor Annise Parker, the country’s first openly gay mayor of a big city, put in place HERO Davis joined pastors from many various congregations from throughout the city to fight City Hall and now finds himself continuing this fight against rising crime and debt. “I am offended City Hall would compare equally the support of the LGBT cause to the black American-or Negro American-cause, which are two different things,” said Davis, who with his wife Michelle is the father to five children. “Your sexual preference is a choice. To be black American, I don’t have a choice with that. I was born that way,” continued Davis, who has both LGBT family members and congregants but is adamant in his preaching that such a lifestyle is against God’s rule. Although “I also say to them that it’s not going to stop me from pastoring or from loving you as an individual.” Davis has made Houston his home for all 59 years of his life and said, “I lived during the times when blacks

could not go into the restaurants in which my mother worked.” He said he knows, “what it was like to be at the back of the bus.” It is because of this history and knowledge that Davis fights so fiercely. “We worked to secure the 17,000 signatures needed to put the referendum before the voters because we value the right to vote Parker was denying us on this issue. We got all the signatures we needed. We won in the streets and at every level to the Supreme Court to bring this before the citizens and we won when our brethren voted it down at the ballot. Our prayer was answered,” said the reverend of common cause that has led a life committed to education, country, community, hard work and family. “As at large Pos. 1 Council Member and with your prayers, I will continue to be a servant leader for a city that works for all of Houston,” he said. BOOK REVIEW
The Jemima Code: Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
ou woke up this morning with a craving. So is breakfast time too early to think about dinner? Is it bad to want to sneak home for lunch, just to make your favorite comfort food? No, because nothing else tastes good when you’re hankering for something specific. Your stomach won’t give up until you’ve satisfied that craving, so you might as well give in a little and read “The Jemima Code” by Toni Tipton-Martin. Though her upbringing in California was sprinkled with foods reminiscent of her family’s origins in the South, Toni Tipton-Martin says that “precious few” of her favorite foods “qualified as southern.” That made her, she says, “a casualty of the Jemima code,” which she defines as something that classifies the “character and life’s work of our nation’s black cooks as insignificant.” She set out to change that. In many libraries, cookbooks by African American authors are lacking. “Even,” says TiptonMartin, “the southern cookbooks were silent on the subject” so she began to specifically collect cookbooks written by black authors, containing the knowledge and recipes of black cooks. As her collection grew, so did her understanding and she began seeing how “cooking changed, and cooks changed with it.” From an obscure 1827 cookbook - the first one published by an African American author (and a man!) - Tipton-Martin realized that many black cooks “existed in the culinary shadows as far as cookbook writers were concerned.” Much of their work was probably credited to white owners or employers. Technological advances in the early twentieth century altered how meals were made; science entered
the picture, too, as did household worker’s unions – the latter, to the frustration of white employers, which is something African American cookbooks quietly reflected. By mid-century, the early Civil Rights Movement could be spotted in black cookbooks of the day. Soul Food enjoyed new appreciation in the 1960s from hippies, flower children, “feisty black cooks,” and people of all races. By the 1980s, African American cookbooks were penned by football stars, gardeners, and experts alike. Says Tipton-Martin, “it was the cooks’ time to shine” although, even in today’s kitchen, “the times are not yet postracial.” There are, as I see it, three main reasons why you’d want “The Jemima Code” on your kitchen bookshelf. First, author Toni Tipton-Martin’s history is a surprising one. Reading her discoveries of cookbook subtleties and social mores alongside recipes through the years feels like opening a multi-layered gift, and her evolution of the Mammy figure is also fascinating. And those recipes she found? Though there aren’t a lot of them here, the ones that peek out through the pages are classic and easy to follow. And finally, there’s a treasure-trove of pictures inside, of cooks at work and of the cookbook covers themselves, making this large-sized book one that readers will want to carry with them from kitchen to living room, countertop to easy chair. You’ll scarcely know what to look at first, or what to cook next, making “The Jemima Code” a book you will crave. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

The Stinky Truth About Body Odor
ur bodies are made with perfect precision and everything it is designed to do believe it or not is for a reason. The problem isn’t what your body is doing it’s why your body is doing it. For example, we sweat for a reason! Did you know we as Americans spend over $18 billion dollars a year trying to stop or change the fragrant aroma of our sweat? Sounds crazy right? But lets examine some facts and Jade Gold some myths about body odor. Everyone who cares about body odor and under arm health- and let’s face it that should be everyone- knows that the first deodorant was created and trademarked in 1888. Except it turns out that’s not remotely true, because the truth is, deodorant has been around in various forms since the times of Ancient Egypt which also began the formal tradition of “scented bathing.” Body odor is the process of bacterial interaction with the sweat that is produced by our sweat glands, not only in our armpits, but our feet and other areas of the body. While some will fall into the myth that it is all bacteria and can not be controlled, a great deal of it could be controlled and or changed simply by changing what you eat and drink on a regular basis. While there are numerous of studies out that show ingredients such as aluminum-based compounds and parabens in many of our cosmetics including our deodorants have contributing factors towards cancer, there are an equal number of studies and articles to try and discredit the findings as well. Here are some foods you can use to help defend your body against microbes and bacteria: 1. Garlic – Garlic is one of the most powerful anti-microbial foods you can eat. It contains several components that will fight against yeast, fungus, worms and even candida overgrowth. 2. Coconut Oil – Coconut oil contains a medium chain fatty acid called lauric acid that lends coconut its antibacterial properties. 3. Ginger – The compound in ginger known as gingerol has been shown to help fight infections, specifically those in the mouth. 4. Fermented Foods – Fermented foods carry all of the benefits of their raw components, as well as the proactive antimicrobial component of probiotics. These good bacteria are a large part of your body’s defense arsenal. 5. Turmeric – Turmeric has some of the most reliable scientific backing when it comes to its anti-microbial power. It has studies to prove its effectiveness against Bacillus cereus, Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The compound that lends the bright orange color to turmeric is the same compound that gives it its antimicrobial power. 6. Honey – Honey was actually one of the first anti-microbial medicines that could be used long before pharmaceuticals were around. Honey contains an enzyme that releases hydrogen peroxide, which effectively kills off certain kinds of bacteria. Make sure that your honey is raw and unprocessed. Pasteurized honey will not have the same effect. 7. Cabbage – A member of the Brassica family of veggies, cabbage has been used as a treatment for a plethora of ailments. It has cancer fighting properties, as well as a high vitamin C content, which we all know boosts our immune systems and helps us to fight off foreign invaders. Cabbage juice is also an effective remedy for stomach ulcers. Now, simply making the adjustment of adding one or more of these items will not make your body immune to sweat or body odor, but making whole lifestyle changes will certainly bring the body back to a natural state to function the way it’s suppose to. In the end, if you care about your body from the inside out, you will at least take consideration to airing on the side of caution and consider all the options when looking for the truth as it relates to how and why the body functions the way it does. It’s just the stinking truth.

Find Your Way Home with The Wiz for the Holidays truly like candy for your eyes. It is a treat to watch them in action. Also expect to see other changes as this revamp version of the classic is modernized without losing its classic flair. NBC’s The Wiz Live airs on Thursday, December 3rd at 8/7 CST. “The Wiz Live!” is adapted from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, with a book by William F. Brown, and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron serve as executive producers. For more information about The Wiz Live, visit www.nbc.com/the-wiz-live.

t is fun to dream about what your future. But when your real life becomes bigger than anything that you could have dreamed its simply amazing. That is the feeling 19-year-old New Jersey native Shanice Williams has been coasting on since receiving the news that she would portray the lead role in NBC’s adaptation of The Wiz. The Wiz, which was first shown to audiences in the mid seventies, is beyond the time of the young Williams but the story with messages of believing in yourself and never giving up hope are ones that are timeless. Williams remembers first seeing The Wiz with her father. She even performed in a production of the musical in middle school in a lesser role because she was too shy to audition for Dorothy.

Williams tucked her shyness in her back pocket and built up some courage this past summer to audition for the role of Dorothy that she thought would be a good “learning experience” as she started her career. After all, this was her first professional audition. The combination of shy girl with an innocent spirit and powerful voice won casting directors over and Williams was named the new Dorothy. Her “teachable moment” had become a learning experience she would never forget. Now with less than 2 weeks before NBC’s The Wiz Live airs on network television,

Williams shines brightly taking center stage in this production with an all-star cast that includes Common, Queen Latifah, Ne-Yo, Mary J. Blige, Elijah Kelley, David Alan Grier, Uzo Aduba, Amber Riley, and Stephanie Mills, who originated the role of Dorothy on Broadway. Being overwhelmed to be casted in this magical production was not a feeling that was just experienced by Williams herself but all cast members felt grateful for the opportunity. Grier, who plays the cowardly lion, recalled the joy he had as a child watching The Wiz. Kelley, who knows he has big shoes to feel, said he feels blessed to be in the role that was once done by the late King of Pop Michael Jackson. Ne-Yo added that his tin man would be the
most heartfelt guy. Being that this new adaptation of The Wiz is more than thirty years after the original changes from the original can be expected. One such change is the iconic ruby red slippers. Dorothy will start her journey on the yellow brick road in red high tops and click her heels home in metallic silver pumps. Gone is the baby blue plaid jumper dress but say hello to a vibrant red plaid skirt with black shirt and fierce black leather jacket for the journey on the yellow brick road. More excitement comes with the addition of the Cirque Du Soleil partnership. Performances by these artists are

ll new school buses purchased by the Houston Independent School District will include threepoint seatbelts, effective immediately. The HISD Transportation Department made the recommendation last week, just days after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provided new guidance on the issue, updating their position to suggest that students should have access to three-point seatbelts. The recommendation was approved by HISD administration on Tuesday, making HISD the first district in the city and among the first in the state to implement such a measure. HISD maintains a fleet of about 1,100 school buses. The decision drew praise from district bus drivers. For more information, visit www.houstonisd.org

An Evening with Tina Campbell in Houston
By Erica Ponder, Feature Writer
A
n Evening with Tina Campbell featuring her husband Teddy Campbell was truly one to remember as Tina revealed that she’s not the woman she used to be. The feisty and outspoken half of group Mary Mary delivered a testimony that shed light on her husband’s infidelity and the depression that affected her greatly two years ago. The songstress and reality television star gave audience members the real scoop on heartbreak, forgiveness, and the spiritual warfare that almost silenced her faith, but ended up doing the exact opposite, amplifying her walk with Christ. Sister and hostess Goo Goo Atkins described the show by saying, “Y’all just ain’t never seen her like this. She means business... People’s lives are forever changed (the other way) when they go through the types of things she went through, and she came out that pain with glorious love for God.” That was indeed true. After coming out and serenading the audience with an original song called “Destination” from her solo album It’s Personal, Tina got down to business and began the story of her unforgettable testimony that touched the audience immensely. Campbell told the audience “I’ve decided to follow Jesus to reach my destiny when life landed me in the
Tina Campbell
most heartbreaking and devastating reality. I still had to believe that my destiny was somewhere other than where I was.” Campbell believed that even though things didn’t feel good, she had to believe that it would all work out for her good. She revealed that the
incredible transformation began to take place in her life when she renewed her mind and outlook on her life. The renewal process was able to take place by surrendering herself to God totally, and writing her prayers in a journal that would later be published as a book.
Campbell revealed that her book I Need a Day to Pray was produced while on her journey “from brokenness to wholeness.” The prayers that were written in her personal journal to God played an instrumental role in her healing, and even though she didn’t fully believe the words immediately, she read the prayers everyday, and they liberated her. As a result, she says her faith was reestablished. Teddy said the couple learned that by humbling themselves and submitting to God’s word, they were also learning to honor God and honor each other. “Everyday we continue to honor God by praying and studying His word, and practicing what we learned.” Teddy also mentioned that it is important to accept Christ’s love before we learn to love someone else. “I was in a condemned place, and it was hard for me to be the man that God and my wife needed me to be, but once I accepted God’s grace, His undeserved grace, I was able to forgive myself, and then truly love my wife,” he said. The show closed with a song from the couple called “Speak The Word,” and an alter call for believers that wanted to accept God as their savior. For more information on the album It’s Personal or the book I Need a Day to Pray, go to IAmTinaCampbell. com.

Frenchy’s Chicken To Expand Nationally and Replace Iconic Scott Street Location By Lisa Valadez, Hispanic Managing Editor
G
et those taste buds ready because Frenchy’s, Houston’s favorite chicken spot with that famous creole flavor, is slated to open nearly 500 franchise restaurants nationwide within the next 10 years. In addition, there are plans to tear down its original location on Scott Street and replace it with a larger, more modern facility. (I know, I’m sad too) The Creuzot Family Originally a po-boy shop, the first Frenchy’s location opened its doors on July 3,1969 by Mr. and Mrs. Percy Creuzot bearing Mr. Creuzot’s nickname “Frenchy.” Drawing on their background from New Orleans, the couple’s signature po-boy recipe became very popular with the crowds populated in and around the University of Houston and Texas Southern University. However, it wasn’t until they decided to add their New Orleans touch and savory spiced chicken to their menu, that all of Houston began to sing the praises of the deliciously famous creole chicken. The unmistakable fragrance of the family recipe in the air drew crowds from near and far and soon enough their creole spiced chicken became the talk of the town, making Frenchy’s the BEST chicken in the city. Make no mistake, their fried chicken was not the only culinary item that the Creuzot family were masters of. Their secret family recipes soon added its seasoned sides of dirty rice, jambalaya, collard greens and their red beans and rice to the menu. To date, the long lines on Scott Street causing traffic jams can be attributed to the scrumptious smell and mouth watering flavors all flowing out of Houston’s favorite little building known as Frenchy’s. We can all admit, it is a Houston treasure. Keeping it in the family, Frenchy’s is currently owned and operated by the third-generation Creuzot family - and with more than 35 restaurants in and around the Houston area, one can say that we’re pretty darn lucky to have accessibility to such an authentic creole taste. And with their products now being sold in nationally known retailers like H-E-B and the expansions of locations to other areas, soon the rest of the world will know the flavors of the best chicken that Houstonians have known about for years. Staying true to their motto, KEEP IT FAMILY, KEEP IT HOUSTON, KEEP IT FRENCHY’S, the Creuzot family invites you to celebrate this holiday season by sharing their famous family recipes with your loved ones. From its famous fried chicken to their collard greens, jambalaya, peach cobbler and their oh-so-delicious bread pudding, you can’t go wrong with Frenchy’s. (Take it from me; make sure to order someBoudain balls as well. You can thank me later.) For more information on how to add some New Orleans spice to your holiday table, visit www.frenchyschicken.com.

STATE2.5C X 13” HISD AD TEMPLATE Applications for H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards Due Dec. 6
D
id you nominate a teacher, school district, early childhood facility or school board for a 2016 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award? Encourage them to fill out an application online at www.heb.com/education by Dec. 6 to put them on a path toward winning cash prizes ranging from $5,000 to $100,000. Nominees have been sent an invitation to complete an online application, which asks for written responses about education philosophy, learning experiences and insights on key issues facing educators in Texas today. In the School Board category, up to five public school boards may be recognized and awarded $5,000 towards the district they serve. Additionally, one or more school boards may receive a special judge’s award totaling up to $25,000 that will be announced during a recognition dinner and celebration in May 2016. Last year, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards gave out more than $800,000 in cash prizes, gift cards and grants. Since its inception in 2002, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program has awarded over $8 million to Texas educators, schools and districts. Nominations are not required for participation. Educators, school districts, early childhood facilities and school boards can g o t o w w w. h e b . c o m / e d u c a t i o n a n d c o m p l e t e a n a p p l i c a t i o n . About the H-E-B Excellence i n E d u c a t i o n Aw a r d s : H -E-B launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a positive way to support public education in Texas. It has become the largest monetary program for educators in the state, spotlighting best practices and celebrating the passion and creativity of Texas educators. H-E-B asks customers, Partners (employees) and community members to nominate teachers, principals, districts, early childhood facilities and school boards in Texas. Each nominee is sent an invitation to complete an application online and is asked about their professional experiences, educational philosophies and achievements both in and out of the classroom. A team of judges reviews the applications, narrowing the field to semi-finalists. From that pool, five regional judging panels comprised of former winners, administrators, and university and community leaders not affiliated with H-E-B select 40 teacher and principal finalists. Finalists and their schools receive a cash prize of $1,000 to $2,500, depending on category. Three separate panels select eight school districts and five early childhood facilities as finalists, awarding $2,500 to $5,000 in cash prizes. Up to five school boards may also be recognized, and awarded $5,000 towards the district they serve. Additionally, one or more school boards may receive a special judge’s award totaling up to $25,000. Site visits are conducted to determine winners. Teacher and principal finalists are invited to San Antonio in May to compete on a statewide level for larger cash prizes totaling more than $400,000. A statewide panel of judges, not affiliated with H-E-B, conducts a personal interview with each finalist to select winners. Eight winners — two principals and six teachers — will be announced along with two school districts, one large and one small, a public school board and an Early Childhood Facility, at a celebratory dinner on May 13. Each winning principal—one elementary school and one high school—will each receive $10,000 in cash for themselves and a $25,000 grant for their schools. The winning large school district will receive a $100,000 cash prize and the winning small school district will receive $50,000. The winning Early Childhood Facility will receive $25,000 and a school board could be awarded up to $25,000. The six winning teachers will include one elementary and one secondary teacher in each of three categories: The Rising Star Award — honors exceptionally promising teachers with less than 10 years of experience. These winners will each receive a $5,000 check for themselves and a $5,000 grant for their schools. McHale Out; Harden and Howard Legacies Now on the Line
Kevin McHale
T
here are two kinds of players in the NBA. The kind that guys want to play with and the kind that get the label of being selfish players. Right now James Harden and Dwight Howard are not guys that are as highly regarded as they were yesterday or even a year ago today. Today the Rockets in an almost unprecedented move fired their head coach that took them to the playoffs three years in a row and to the Western Conference Finals last year. “We probably had more meetings in the last six weeks than in my previous four years here. It wasn’t working.”
Those are the words of Kevin McHale and he’s right. For a team that added a talented point guard in Ty Lawson, returned several starters and role players that were injured last year 4-7, is not what anyone in the organization or in this fan base was expecting. It’s not just that the team is 4-7 though; it’s the way they are losing. Blowing 4th quarter leads to teams that either didn’t make the playoffs last year or had mediocre records. Getting blown out at home and by everyone’s account playing with very little effort. James Harden is still getting his points but he’s taking more shots
to get them. And there is almost no ball movement at times. In all of the four-plus seasons of McHale being with the Rockets, he has compiled a regular season mark of 323-193 (.598), including a record of 4-7 this season. He was named the 12th head coach in franchise history on June 1, 2011. At this point in their careers James Harden and Dwight Howard have to make a decision. Are they going to become Shaq and Kobe and bring the city of Houston Championships? Championships, with the talent they have, that they are more than capable of bringing home. Or are they going to become Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady? Guys that gave us some good memories and had all the talent in the world but just never lived up to expectations. The Rockets General Manger Daryl Morey in a statement about McHale said, “He is an unbelievable person and coach so that was a tough meeting.” Referring to the meeting Houston Rockets management had with McHale to let him know he had been fired. He continued by saying, “They (the team) just wasn’t responding,” as one of the reasons to the firing. J. B. (John-Blair) Bickerstaff, Rockets assistant coach, has been named as the Houston Rockets Interim Head Coach. In addition, assistant coach Chris Finch was promoted to associate head coach. Both are in their fifth season with the Rockets. We shall see what the future of this talented but underachieving team holds. For more information, visit www.rockets.com
