The Tension In Ferguson
Jesse Jackson
National Writer
T
he tension in Ferguson, Missouri is building. But that tension did not begin with the shooting of Michael Brown and will not end with the grand jury’s decision about that shooting. The police have spent thousands of hours preparing for unrest, but no similar commitment has been made to prepare for justice. Where is the preparation of an economic plan to put people to work, a school plan to educate the young, a housing plan to create affordable housing? The state and federal government have rearmed the police in Ferguson. But they haven’t joined to rebuild the schools or revive the jobs or rehouse the homeless. They aren’t preparing for justice in Ferguson; they are preparing for the response to injustice. To understand the reality of Ferguson, you have to get beyond the myth. How did racially segregated inner suburbs like Ferguson get formed, surrounded by virtually all white suburbs
POLITICAL By Burt
ith the 2014 Election Year having ended earlier this month it wasn’t long before the 2015 ballot began getting crowded with candidates announcing for the first open races for Houston Mayor and City Controller in six years. Election Day is November 3rd and early voting will start around mid-October for what are expected to be exciting races for all the city’s top jobs. Ben Hall, a former city attorney and much now celebrated private lawyer, lobbed the first bomb last week with radio commercials announcing that he would be back next year despite his poor showing last year not coming close to a run-off when he ran against now term limited Mayor Annise Parker. “Last year I promised to have a conversation with you about the things we needed to do to improve our city and unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” said Hall in the ads for which he has said he will put millions of dollars of his own money into air campaigns with almost a year to go. Greatest likelihood from Hall’s early hit is his hurting State Rep. Sylvester Turner’s third bid to run for his lifetime goal to become Houston Mayor. Turner won his thirteenth term in the Texas House November 4th with no opposition and after 26 years in the legislature announced during a series of

contributed. Zoning was designed to keep neighborhoods exclusive. Highways, rather than mass transit, were built, subsidizing white suburban commuting into cities but not poorer blacks travel out to suburban jobs. Interstate highways carved up cities, often isolating the poorer, minority neighborhoods. Some of these policies were ended at the turn of the century, but their effects still mark communities like Ferguson. Other destructive policies are more recent. In the beginning of this century, federally supervised banks marketed exploitative subprime loans to African American communities like Ferguson. When the bubble burst and the loans’ interest rates exploded, entire neighborhoods of the African American middle class were left underwater. Half of Ferguson homes today are underwater, with owners owing more than their homes are worth The Obama administration has put its focus on police practices and armaments, for obvious reasons. But we need a far broad public inquest into how Ferguson became Ferguson. We distort reality if we assume, as Rothstein puts it, “that the responsibility is borne by rogue police officers, white flight and suburbanites desire for economic homogeneity.” Prosecuting the officer gets us the postman who didn’t do his job, but
it ignores the corrupted post office that produced him. Changing the practices of the police is a step, but it won’t produce much if we don’t change the structure of laws, institutionalized biases that produce places like Ferguson. Remember, Ferguson is not alone. The suburbanization of the abandoned black ghetto is a feature of many metropolitan areas. Every city has a Ferguson waiting to blow. It is long past the time when we begin to address the real, institutionalized obstacles to racial justice. You can write to the Rev. beyond them? In an extraordinary report for the Economic Policy Institute, Richard Rothstein goes beyond the conventional wisdom of white flight, black poverty, and police excess. As Rothstein reports, the reality is that St. Louis -- as well as other American metropolitan areas -- was segregated by “racially explicit public policies of zoning, public housing and suburban finance, and by publicly endorsed segregation policies of real estate, banking and insurance industries.” African Americans literally were locked out of some neighborhoods, and locked into others. Ferguson, for example, was originally a “sundown town,” a suburb in which blacks were banned after dark. Then, as it slowly began to attract middle class black residents, it became a place that whites abandoned. Public services were cut back; schools grew more crowded; streets grew more dangerous. Ferguson became a new segregated enclave. Rothstein demonstrates that this wasn’t accident; it was driven by public policy, as acknowledged by courts and presidential commissions. The Federal Housing Authority, for example, conditioned its loans to help develop suburbs on exclusion of African Americans. Mutually reinforcing public policies

60th birthday celebrations he would not run for representative again but would begin a more thought out campaign than before for Mayor of the City he always lived in and loved. Hall and Turner are both acclaimed African American Democrat attorneys in a city where the African American middle class and middle management voter base since Turner’s first run for mayor 22 years ago has been moving speedily to suburbs south such as Pearland and Missouri City

and even north to Katy and Cypress. In recent years when one African American attorney has competed for coveted run-off ballot space for mayor it has been a difficult or even elusive venture including Turner’s race in 2003, Gene Locke in 2009 and Hall in 2013. With more than one what it does is pave a way for another political aspirant, possibly Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia. Garcia is a former city council member considering contesting to become the first Hispanic mayor in

a city now with nearly twice as many Hispanics as blacks. At Large City Council Members Steve Costello and Jack Christie and former City Council and former Congress Member Chris Bell are considering joining the race and term limited west side City Council Member Oliver Pennington is already running for the Houston Mayor 2015 race. Along with Hall announcing interest in succeeding Parker was former Houston City Council Member and HCC Trustee Carroll Robinson’s announcement last week for city controller. Current Controller Ronald Green, like Parker, is term limited. Robinson is likely to be joined in the race by Republican Bill Frazer who came close against Green last year. Terry Crews Talks Acting, Family and Farming
eing in a box limits the possibilities of how far one can go in life. With no room to expand opportunities are missed and one’s full potential is never reached. This is why film and TV star Terry Crews lives outside the box. His goal in life is do everything he ever dreamed of and take advantage of everything opportunity that comes his way. He’s checking them off one by one. Loving husband… checked. Devoted father…checked. Dominate football player…checked. Successful actor…checked. Entertaining game show host…checked. Educational author…checked. What else does Crews want to check off his list? Find out while reading Houston Style Magazine’s interview with the multifaceted Terry Crews. Crews seems to be popping of everywhere these days. Turn on your television to see him as NYPD Sergeant Terry Jeffords on Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, hosting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and as the face of Old Spice. He has covered the big screen in films like The Expendables, White Chicks, and more are to follow. His name can be seen on bookstore shelves as the author of Manhood: How to Be a Better Man – or Just Live with One. And he is not done yet. Before he was Terry Crews the actor, he was Terry Crews the baller. Drafter in 1991 by the Los Angeles Rams, Crews played with the San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins, and Philadelphia Eagles before hanging up his cleats in 1997. Wanting to reinvent himself he jumped feet first into acting landing a gig as T-Money on Battle Dome, a televised athletic competition. Crews went from hoping the phone would ring to it ringing nonstop to become one of the most sought after in the industry. “I prayed to get to this spot. I remember when no one called. When you have that memory of just sitting there of just praying and waiting and wishing somebody will give you a shot, and now that they do. It just feels really, really good. I am just very thankful. My heart just feels full of thanks for what I have right now. Nobody is going to appreciate what I have and what I am doing right now more than me,” said an humble Crews. What he is doing is making people laugh. In his current sitcom Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Crews plays NYPD Sergeant Terry Jeffords who he describes as the mother of the whole group and tries to keep the gang of detectives in line while still maintaining a leadership role in the precinct. “It is kind of wild,” said Crews and it shows in every episode. Out of all the characters he has portrayed, Crews admits that Jeffords is probably the most like him personally because the writers have put so much of Crews’ own life into the character. “I go to work and I come home. That is basically my night and day and it’s the same thing with Terry Jeffords,” said Crews, who is a family guy at heart. He has been married for 25 years and the couple has 5 children. “ I would look at myself as the police of my family. I don’t really have a lot of patience for people who I feel are a danger to my family or me in anyway. I think that is the same thing when you look at Terry Jeffords as a police officer,” said Crews. “I am that kind of guy in real life.” Loving his family and working hard are not the only commonalities between Crews and Jeffords. Both are nerds. Usually a jock and nerd are not equated together but Crews wouldn’t have it any other way. “I am a big nerd. So they (the writers) kind of added that to him (Jeffords) and it is really, really great.” Another role that comes natural to Crews is
6
Terry Crews
that of being host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Crews said, “ I have opened a whole new lane that no one thought they would see me in.” The show plays to his nerdy side and allows him to grow his fan base since he can be so interactive with the audience. Something he has not been able to do on other jobs. He is further connecting with the public with his literary works. In his debut book Manhood, Crews answers the question what it means to be a man by detailing the trials and errors he has made in his own life. With it already having a successful debut Crews has his eyes set on the future with a second book focused on being a good father. “What I am doing is gathering notes,” said Crews. “People try to write a book by one tweet at a time. And I have too much to say.” The second book will not tell people what to do but it will give an account of Crews’ journey to be the best dad he can be and hopefully that will help someone in the same boat. Being a father is one of the most important jobs and it gets harder and harder. With kids having access to so much more these days Crews believes the most important lesson to teach boys is that they are priceless. “As men what we do is that we determine our worth by what we do. We determine how valuable by if we are winning today or if we are loosing today. That’s dangerous.” It can be so dangerous that it can be a determent to your family. It happened to Crews. He admits when he was starting to get more and more successful at one point in his life that he literally thought he was more valuable than his wife and kids. His family gave him the ultimate wake up call when they had enough of his arrogance. “Family
November 20 - November 26, 2014
www.StyleMagazine.com
needs unconditional love,” said Crews. And he was not doing that and the reality of it floored him. He knew he had to change and learn that everyone is priceless. “Everybody’s worth is immeasurable... It has nothing to do with what your value is.” That is one lesson that will most definitely be in his next book. Other things on the horizon for Terry Crews are season 2 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, commercials for Old Spice, shows of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and the movie Ridiculous 6. Crews also said that Expendables 4 might also be in the works. With a packed schedule already he is still keeping his eye open for the right role on Broadway. “I have always seen myself as Mufasa in the Lion King,” said Crews. “If I could be the dad in Lion King, that would be killer. Right there on Broadway, the whole thing. That would be perfect.” Something that literally raised my eyebrows about another one of Crews desires was his heart for farm life. “ I want to own a farm,” said Crews. Excuse me, a what? “I want chickens, cows, and pigs. I want corn stalks. I want the big giant porch and I want to fish in a stream. I want a farm,” Crews proudly exclaimed. As a kid some of Crews’ best memories were on the farm of his great, great aunt and he just wants to capture those again with his own farm. As you can see there is no limit to Terry Crews. Don’t put him in a box because he will just pop right out of it. He is man on the move with a goal of getting better and bigger and taking everything life has to offer. Keep up with Terry Crews online at www.facebook. com/realterrycrews, Twitter @Terrycrews, and www. terrycrews.com.
Alphabet Safari BOOK REVIEW Kay Kay’s Dana Sullivan By Terri
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

ou’ve looked high and low. There’s something very important that you can’t find, even though you’ve searched everywhere: beneath your bed, inside your closet, in your car seat, behind the sofa. It’s not in the kitchen, in the bathroom, or the car. You don’t know what to do. So why not follow what’s in “Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari” by Dana Sullivan? Think - because what you’re looking for might be right under your nose! It was a beautiful, sunny day, and Kay Kay planned to enjoy it. With a smile on his face, he strolled past Bungoma’s new village school and he heard the children call his name. They were proud of their new classroom, and they wanted him to see it. Kay Kay looked around the classroom and saw shiny floors. He saw brand-new desks and plain white walls that practically begged for someone to paint something on them. Kay Kay told the children that he would paint animals A to Z on the wall. But which ones? Like many people, Kay Kay thought best when he was moving, so he used his feet and his brain to go to the countryside. There, he met Ant, but there’d be no chatting because Kay Kay was deep in thought. A few feet down the path, Baboon and his friends wanted to dance, but Kay Kay couldn’t take even a minute for that. He had to think of animals, A to Z. Fox was having a tea party not far away, but Kay Kay didn’t have time for tea. He couldn’t settle an argument for Jackal, there’d be no games with Leopard, and absolutely no jokes or riddles with
CULINARY
Porcupine, either. Snake could daydream on his own and Warthog would have to run around with his friends by himself, because Kay Kay was busy thinking. This animal A to Z stuff was very, very hard! And then, suddenly, it hit him! The answer was right in front of him, and he had to get to work quickly. But, of course, there was one thing missing: what could he paint on the wall that starts with a “K”? Based loosely on a true story of a talented Kenyan taxi driver and the “very real” Star of Hope School, “Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari” is a cute A-B-C book based on animals. For small children, that kind of thing can’t be beat. But author-illustrator Dana Sullivan adds a nice surprise for slightly older kids, too: in the back of this book, you’ll find a behind-the-scenes story of how this book came to be, as well as more information on Star of Hope, Kay Kay himself, and a website filled with videos and photos. If they’re up for more, your kids can also learn to say a few words and funny phrases in Swahili. Find this book for 2-to-4-year-olds, share it with 5-to-6-year-olds, and you won’t be sorry. If your children want A-B-C in a different kind of F-U-N, “Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari” might be just what they’re looking for. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

meat for any holiday. A pork roast on its own is relatively traditional – but add ingredients like bacon, Brussels sprouts and pomegranate seeds, and the result is an incredibly delicious dish that bursts with contemporary flavor. The caramelized texture and taste from roasting is complemented by sweet-sour notes from the pomegranate seeds – and bacon brings it all together with a smoky finish. Serve the roast with a crisp green salad and boiled new potatoes with butter and chives.

oday, some holiday celebrations might look and feel a little more modern and a little less traditional – maybe you’re getting together on the day everyone can make it; maybe you’re celebrating Christmas more than once; you might be firing up the grill instead of the oven; or perhaps you’re swapping the classic centerpiece entree for a more updated meal. No matter how you do it, where or with whom, the unifying elements of any holiday gathering are family, friends and food. Whether or not your celebrations are about breaking traditions that are not broken, they still deserve a dish worthy of the occasion – like juicy, tender and versatile pork. Served in inspired ways with hints of global flavor, pork is the perfect
Pork Roast with Bacon, Brussels Sprouts and Pomegranate Servings: 10-12 3-4 pound New York (top loin) pork roast 4 slices bacon 5 teaspoons lemon-black pepper blend seasoning 3 10-ounce containers Brussels sprouts, trimmed (larger sprouts cut in half lengthwise) 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds (also called arils)
Preheat oven to 350°F. Cook bacon in a
large skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally, until crisp and browned, about 8 minutes. Transfer bacon to paper towels, drain and cool. Reserve bacon fat. Coarsely crumble bacon. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add Brussels sprouts and cook until they turn bright green, about 2 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold running water. Pat Brussels sprouts dry with paper towels. In a large bowl, toss Brussels sprouts with 2 tablespoons bacon fat. Brush 1 tablespoon bacon fat all over pork and season with 4 teaspoons lemon-pepper seasoning mix. Place pork on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Roast, uncovered, for 50 minutes. Spread Brussels sprouts around pork. Continue roasting until the internal temperature of the pork on a thermometer reads 145°F (medium rare) to 160°F (medium), about 30 minutes more (allow about 20 minutes per pound roasting time). Transfer roast to serving platter and tent with aluminum foil. Increase oven temperature to 425°F. Continue roasting Brussels sprouts until browned, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from oven and stir Brussels sprouts with bacon and pomegranate seeds. Season with remaining 1 teaspoon lemon-pepper seasoning mix and add to platter. Heat roasting pan over high heat until juices sizzle. Add 1/2 cup water and bring to a boil, scraping up browned bits in the pan with a wooden spoon. Remove from heat. Carve pork roast and drizzle with pan juices. Serve. Keep your holidays – and your New Year – fresh and inspired with modern pork recipes at PorkBeinspired.com and Pinterest.com/PorkBeinspired.

Big K.R.I.T. Second Album in a World of its Own

B
ig K.R.I.T. has risen to new heights and landed on a planet all his own with his sophomore album on Def Jam, Cadillactica; a loosely conceptual project that showcases the Mississippi artist’s one-of-a-kind work. What is quickly becoming his most popular work is also his best quality thus far. It appears that Big K.R.I.T. grew tired of fans and media outlets using his older works as a catalyst for supporting his music. Soon after the release of KRIT Wuz Here in 2010 followed by his appearance on the freshman cover of XXL and what was his biggest “mainstream” buzz in 2011, Krizzle spiraled into a grey area filled with sample hold ups and lack of creative control of his art. While Big K.R.I.T.’s humble demeanor has always been something
HEALTH
to speak of, it may have kept him in an unsure and weary state of creation. Enter, Cadillactica. The creation of this intergalactic space for himself has proven worthwhile. Somewhere during the trip through the universe K.R.I.T. lost the overly humble and self-conscious weights of the past few years. A complete turnaround from K.R.I.T.’s underwhelming debut album with Def Jam, Live from the Underground, which felt forced and impersonal, Cadillactica encompasses his raw emotion and the allurement of being southern. Simply put, the album is genuinely K.R.I.T. With a complete absence of samples and all but five tracks produced exclusively by the king himself, his oneof-a-kind production ability and out of this world lyricism become the forefront of the project. As the intro Kreation plays, it is evident that there were no compromises in making this album; “let’s just be perfect” is as much romantic as it is artistic. Along with the following semi-electro, hard hitting track “Life”, the album kicks off by insinuating that instead of foregoing the creative process to accommodate outside expectations, K.R.I.T. took his time, found life and released a project that he feels is perfect. And to be completely honest, it is close to if not sonically perfect.
In case the first two tracks were too introspective or didn’t draw you in with an 808, My Sub Pt. 3 and subsequently the title track Cadillactica (produced by DJ Dahi and DJ Khalil) come in with perfect timing to remind listeners that Krizzle’s quick witted lyricism is still southern to the core and he has no qualms blowing the sub-woofers in your car when necessary. My Sub Pt. 3 cues the instant stank face and basically begs for a remix featuring some southern greats to be made. With features from singers Raphael Saadiq, Rico Love and Mara Hruby, there is an undertone of romance on the album. From romanticizing the past, an exotic dancer and even a car, this album is dripping in genuine emotion. K.R.I.T. also does his fair share of crooning on this project, namely on “Third Eye” and “Angels” both of which adequately offer an out of body experience while you fall in love, like it or not. True to his southern form, K.R.I.T. once again joins forces Devin the Dude and Bun B for the track “Mo Betta Cool”, which is imbued with Houston love and greatness. Also featured are E-40, Wiz Khalifa, Lupe Fiasco and A$AP Ferg, all fulfilling their role in complementing K.R.I.T.’s style and purpose for the album. Yet, possibly the best and most surprising feature is

M
found on “Saturdays = Celebration” featuring Jamie N. Commons, a British blues singer. With production help from Alex da Kid, the track is reminiscent of Jesus Walks and Commons’ vocals seamlessly blend with K.R.I.T.’s rapping in a beautifully heavy, Grammy caliber discussion of death. Most notably, Cadillactica claims that Big K.R.I.T. is indeed king of the south. Between having a track literally named “King of the South” wherein he says, “I embody the south, the swangin’ and bangin’. The soul and the pain and the blues” to the reprise of the popular “Mt. Olympus”, there is no arguing that as far as Justin Scott is concerned he is not “coming for the crown” it has already been custom fitted and has his named inscribed on it. His disdain for the happenings of the last few years is evident. Instead of calling out other artists or inciting a temporary beef, K.R.I.T. has simply made his claim, backed it up with a stellar project along with a very successful tour and dared anyone to say he is being untruthful. Cadillactica is one of the best complete, well rounded projects to come out of the south in a very long time, let’s watch and see if anybody comes with the same force and quality to refute Big K.R.I.T.’s claim.
