ver a year ago in October 2014, 17-year-old LaQuan McDonald was shot 16 times by a Chicago policeman and killed. With the support of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, the city fought several attempts to have the dashcam video of the incident released to the public. On Wednesday, the video will be released by judicial order. An entire city now girds itself for possible demonstrations and riots. Once more community leaders anticipate that Chicago citizens will take to the streets -- hopefully in nonviolent, disciplined demonstrations -- to demand that Black Lives Matter. Those who have seen the video agree that it is devastating.
POLITICAL
S By
Do Black Lives Matter in Chicago? Local elections were a month away when the shooting took place. The tape was withheld from the public pending official investigation. But to date, there has been no action on that investigation. The police officer who shot and killed McDonald has not been charged with a crime and remains on the police payroll. Yet even while the tape remained secret, the Chicago City Council, acting on advice of a city attorney who had seen the tape, according to local media reports, voted for a $5 million settlement for the McDonald family before the family even filed a lawsuit. Officials continued to oppose release of the video until a judge finally ordered its release under the Freedom of Information Act laws. In Chicago, officials offered no remedy. Instead they sat on the tape for more than a year, buried the killing in an unending investigation, gave the officer a pass, and got through the elections. Having failed to take action, they now lead a city that awaits a fearsome reaction. Jeffrey Neslund, one of the attorneys for McDonald’s family who has seen the video, says, “It will have a powerful impact on anyone
seeing it.” It apparently shows that McDonald was carrying a small knife but was walking away from police when he was shot repeatedly. Neslund argues that “the bigger story is the process. That needs to change. If the mayor and people in his administration know how devastating this is, and they can’t fire this officer and recommend that he be disciplined and charged, it is ridiculous. People want a remedy, not a riot. It is utterly irresponsible to do nothing until the courts make the tape public and then shudder at the anticipated outraged response by Chicago residents. Long ago, the mayor should have announced a complete shakeup of the Chicago Police Department. Only that can begin to revive any trust in the police. At this point, the Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez should resign for her failure to investigate and charge the officer involved. The unending secret investigation should make its findings known. If the tape is as damning as reported, the police officer should be charged and relieved of his duties. Black lives do matter. If there are demonstrations when the
tape is released on Wednesday, I hope citizens will protest with discipline, and demand a remedy. Chicago’s citizens should not have to demonstrate in the streets in order to be treated justly. Citizens of color should feel protected not threatened by the police whose salaries they help pay. Elected officials should worry less about covering up the horrors than about remedying them. Only action will heal the city’s wounds, and the time for it is long overdue. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush. org. Sharon Moses Seeks to Serve Houston
Burt Levine, Political Writer
haron Moses believes Houston’s 2.162 million people deserve a city council that delivers to them government with integrity, listens to them, responds to and respects them. As a Houston native and long-time city worker Moses doesn’t see city officials backing the city taxpayers that pay their bills. She’s running for City Council At Large Pos. 5 and made the Saturday, December 12 run-off. Early Voting is December 2 through 8. “I’ve watched city council up close for more than a decade. I’ve lived in every area of Houston. I know there is a bridge I can build between citizens and city council. Respectful, responsive and reliable government must start with city council,” said Moses, who was born in Houston and has lived all her life in Houston attending Westbury, Wheatley, Lee, Milby and Bellaire Schools. She earned her both her bachelor degree in government and Spanish and master degree in transportation management from Texas Southern University (TSU). She followed that with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from TSU’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. “I’ve lived from southwest at Alief to the northeast at Acres Homes and I know this city needs to be brought together. I was certified following high school as a mechanic and have

worked in private business in the insurance industry. I have worked for one of the largest law firms in the city Fulbright and Jaworski and built my own small law business. I’ve earned nearly a dozen years working in both the legislative and administrative areas of the city government and I know accountability and transparency, waste, fraud and abuse must be addressed,” she said. council toy with the intellect of city voters by wording a Prop. 1 as a Houston Equal Rights Ordinance but knowing what it really did was threaten the privacy and public safety rights of families, small businesses, innocent and vulnerable women and children. She said she saw Prop. 2 presented “limit terms” but its effect expands the terms of elected officials. “ReNew Houston has been found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court because of how it was written

hiding taxes and fees from the citizens. And tax payers of the city angered me as did these more recent over reaches by our out of hand city council. I’ll demand fiscal discipline from departments across the city decrease waste and overspending. Less spending means less taxes and more freedom for families,” Moses said. Moses, her husband Carlo Sanchez and their family attend Lakewood Church in the heart of the city and are engaged with friends and family in charities throughout the city. Important to Sharon and Carlo are efforts they’ve stood up for recently regarding Christians and Jews United In Support of Israel and joining with Buffalo Soldiers, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Jewish War Veterans and local ROTC units to honor Houston veterans. “This Thanksgiving we have so much to be thankful for as we sit at our blessed table as they did at the first Thanksgiving,” said Moses, referring to the many families of varied faiths and races who sat together to break bread and prayed about building a better future for all. BOOK REVIEW
Naughtier than Nice
ou have to tell somebody. There’s a secret inside you, one you’ve been keeping far too long and you’re about to burst. You need to talk about it. You need some advice, some perspective. As in the new novel “Naughtier than Nice” by Eric Jerome Dickey, if you don’t talk about this issue soon, it could be the death of you. Last Christmas Eve had been a memorable one for Frankie McBroom, for the wrong reasons: that was the day she spent thinking about how to cancel her wedding to Franklin Carruthers. He’d been her soul mate, her one-and-only… until she discovered that he was a married man. As the eldest McBroom sister, Frankie felt as though she needed to set an example and she fought hard to forget Franklin. She wished her relationship with him had been like what youngest sister Tommie had with her Blue. Or like what middle sister Livvy had with Tony. But no, Frankie had something else altogether. Tommie McBroom felt bad that she was cheating on her fiancé. Down deep, she loved Blue but he’d betrayed her: he knew how much she wanted a family and yet he’d had surgery to prevent it, which proved that he didn’t care about her. Beale Streets, on the other hand, listened to her. Yes, Beale was a few years younger than Tommie, but that didn’t matter when they were making love. The delicate chain surrounding Livvy McBroom-Barrera’s ankle spoke to Livvy of different times, of days when she and Tony were estranged and she first slept with a woman. The charm on the chain reminded her of things she learned, and lovers who
disappeared from her life so suddenly. She thought of them often – especially when she and Tony brought another woman to their bed. It was hard to believe that a year had gone by since Frankie caught Franklin in a lie. So much had happened since last Christmas, so much that wasn’t discussed. Tommie’s life was taking a turn. Livvy’s life seemed to be going backwards. And Frankie? She was dealing with a blown-up phone, an acid-ruined car, bricks through her windows, belongings rearranged in her home. Frankie was dealing with a stalker… So you like a little spice with your Christmas nog? Or maybe some extra pepper in your peppermints? Then “Naughtier than Nice” will make you very jolly. In this somewhat-sequel, author Eric Jerome Dickey made a list of everything you want in a holiday drama – cheating, scandalous pasts, sex, murder, and light humor – and it’s obviously checked twice to add even more of the above. Although this book can be read as a standalone, readers then get to revisit some of Dickey’s best characters from other novels. His usual themes are mashed-up, and there’s a very nice gotcha or three scattered throughout this book. That, and the fast-moving action, made me ho-ho-ho for this not-so-holiday holiday book and Dickey fans old and new will love it. Just beware: start “Naughtier than Nice” and you’ll just have to tell somebody. S h a r e t h i s s t o r y o n l i n e a t w w w. stylemagazine.com.

MC Wickett Crickett
Obits: Houston Pioneer MC Wickett Crickett Dies at 56
T
he worst news came in regards t o M C Wi c k e t t Crickett on Monday. The promoter and longtime MC who for four decades worked H o u s t o n ’s c l u b and rap scene to an unimaginable degree died Monday after a seven-month battle with lung cancer. He was 56. Born Darnell Veal, MC Wickett Crickett overcame the absence of his father and his mother abandoning him to venture up to New York City, where he earned the nickname that would become synonymous with not only Houston’s rap scene but also the club scene as well. Starting with Fresh Connection in Fifth Ward, Crickett maneuvered all over the city, collaborating with Captain Jack
and a host of others, including being part of the city’s SLAB Festival as well as being a genuine good guy. He also was an inventor of many popular phrases amongst emcees across the country. In a profile for Houstonia in 2013, he remarked having created several slang phrases that have since become staples. Amongst many books such as Lance Scott Walker’s Houston Rap, Crickett was seen as a historian and most notably being the man who gave DJ Screw his first job. An outpouring of condolences hit his Facebook page as well as the various accounts set up to help MC Wickett Crickett with his rising medical expenses. A benefit show was had last month just as the city had honored him with his own day, MC Wickett Crickett Day on October 24th. Veal’s main motto, “I am you, you are me and together we are one!” will live on as he hoped the world remembered him as “true street leader, who cared for his people” according to the Forward Times. 3 1/2 Minutes to Be Thankful for Black Lives
Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
G
reet your love ones with a smile that is a little brighter. Allow that embrace to last a few precious moments longer. Squeeze that hand just a bit tighter. As we sit down to partake in what has become a long standing tradition of breaking bread surrounded by a host of family and friends this Thanksgiving allow your eyes to gaze around the room and take a mental inventory of all the faces that look back at you. There may be one missing that wasn’t their last year or in some cases a few missing from years past. Be it from other plans made, sickness or some other tragic circumstance be thankful and grateful for the faces you see. There are some families where this time of year is not the best. This time of year does not bring joy and hopes for the future. This time of year just adds to their heartache. The parents of Jordan Davis know this feeling all too well. It has been three years since their son’s death and it is stills feels like it was yesterday. Their heartache began around this time of year on a Friday night, November 23, 2012. Davis was doing what many teens do when they are out of school enjoying a simple night of having a few laughs and kicking back with friends. Harmless right? It was until Davis’ and his friends crossed paths with forty-five-year-old Michael Dunn. Now we have all pulled up to gas stations and have seen or heard things we didn’t like or agree with. People may be driving too fast in the area, talking too loud, and of course, playing their music too loud. But what the hey, you are only at the gas station a few moments. The average person gets their fuel and goes on their way. They don’t act irrational. However, Dunn was not the average person. He was a man with a grudge; a man with a negative attitude of African Americans and the “thug life.” Davis and his friends (Leland Brunson, Tommie Stornes, and Tevin Thompson) pulled up 8
Nov 26 - Dec 2, 2015
to Gate gas station in Jacksonville, FL to buy gum and cigarettes while blasting some hip-hop rap music. Dunn, who was visiting Jacksonville, FL, pulled up around the same time with his girlfriend Rhonda Rouer to buy white wine and chips. Immediately Dunn became irritated because the bass from the bass coming from the loud hip-hop music from the teens’ vehicle was so loud that the vibration shook both their vehicles. Dunn asked the teens to turn down the music. One compiled with the request while Davis decided to turn the music back up. Dunn and Davis argued over the music where Davis was to be extremely mad while Dunn was said to have been calmed. The unthinkable happened next. After Davis allegedly threatened to kill Dunn, Davis opened his door and pointed something at Dunn. In fear of his own life, Dunn responded by firing three shots towards Davis. Shots hit Davis’ legs, lungs and aorta. Dunn, fearing for his life from an already wounded man, opened his door and continued firing as the boys backup their vehicle.
Parents of Jordan Davis
www.StyleMagazine.com
After the shooting, Dunn drove back to his hotel to eat pizza and didn’t contact the police. He went to sleep and woke up the next morning and drove home with his girlfriend where his first call was not to 911 but a friend in law enforcement. Dunn was arrested, not because he turned himself in, but because of an eyewitness testimony. Dunn used the Stand Your Ground Law as his defense. The jury didn’t buy it and sentenced Dunn to life in prison. Justice was served for Davis’ death but what about the next time this happens to someone. Sadly, there will be a next time. Davis is just one of many African Americans being killed because someone had a problem with them simply because of their skin color. Davis is part of the scroll of names that include Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Oscar Grant III and the list goes on with names of persons of varying skin hues, ages, financial backgrounds and upbringings. The problem that is wide spread across America is becoming all too common. We have become numb to the shock of it all, as we grow sicker by the sadness of it all. But we are more than sad, we are angry and we are taking action to make a change. We are becoming a voice for those who have been silenced. Taking action for those whose legacies live on in our heart, mind, and soul. The new HBO documentary 31/2 minutes, Ten bullets, chronicles the agonizing story of Jordan Davis, his friends and their families. It aired on the third anniversary of Davis’s death and tells the story that goes beyond the headlines to the root of the problem to hopefully bringing about a solution to rectify this ongoing national problem. This is not isolated to just Davis’ family. It could be anyone’s son or daughter. It could be you. Take an extra 3 ½ minutes before diving into your Thanksgiving feast to remember those loss and pray for those mourning their passing. As you open your eyes from that moment of silence allow your mind to wonder, will all the people you see at your table make it home tonight? They just might not. They could become the next Jordan Davis and it could just take 3 ½ minutes and ten bullets to do it. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

STYLE EN ESPAÑOL
Facebook te ayudará a ‘olvidar’ a tu expareja
A

Facebook Will Help With Forgetting About Your “Ex”
Y
ou just ended your one-year relationship. You have spent the last three days on your couch, devastated and eating nothing but fast food. You open Facebook between Netflix movies and you see that your “ex” has posted a picture with a smile while on a night out. Break-ups in these times of social media can be hard. So, Facebook is testing a new way to help relieve pain, without forcing you to stop being friends with your ex or deleting all your posts. The new option, Take a Break, will now appear when you announce a break-up on Facebook. Their updates will no longer appear in the news feed and you won’t get reminders from Facebook to tag him or her in a photo. (But don’t worry, you’ll still be able to visit the profile page while listening to Adele’s ‘Hello’ on repeat.) As Facebook has found in its memories feature, sometimes the past is really painful. An editing option lets you review your old statuses and will block your “ex” out of those memories. “This work is part of an ongoing effort to develop resources available to people in difficult moments in their lives,” Facebook stated in a blog posting. In the past, you could literally burn a box of photos. Today, that’s difficult when you have digital photos. And perhaps this may not be therapeutic, but it has one big advantage: none of the changes on Facebook is permanent. You can undo the changes anytime, which is good if you happen to get back together with your ex, or even if you mutually decide to be your friends. The method is being tested in the United States, but eventually will reach all the broken hearts around the world.

Does Turkey “Gobble Up” Your Happiness? Six (Meat-Free) Ways to Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
hanksgiving is just around the corner, and, while we may long for a day of candlelit love, laughter, and togetherness, we all know the reality will probably be less sepiatoned. For many people, this season is a time of anxiety, irritability, and maybe even depression. You assume that the holiday blues arise due to conflicts with family members and past issues reasserting themselves—and surely that is part of it. But another (often overlooked) source of your bad mood may be something you never even considered: the guest of honor sitting at the center of the table. That’s right. Your turkey. Turkey has always been the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal, so most people never even question its presence,» says Mary Wendt, MD, founder of www. getwaisted.com and author of Waist Away: How to Joyfully Lose Weight and Supercharge Your Life (Doctor Doctor Press, 2014, ISBN: 978-1-497492462, $14.95). «Unfortunately—as odd as it may sound—there is a fair amount of evidence that consuming poultry can negatively affect your levels of happiness. You may have experienced firsthand the crash that follows eating
a big serving of turkey: the traditional main course of Thanksgiving dinner. You may also have heard that tryptophan, an amino acid present in turkey meat, is to blame for this tired and listless feeling. Research published in the American Journal of Health Promotion in March/

you feel a difference in your mood. Here Are Six Ways You Can Enjoy a Meat-Free Holiday Meal: 1. Focus on carb-y foods that help you stay full and satisfied. Have an extra-large serving of winter squash, sweet potatoes, or mashed potatoes with a vegetable-based gravy. These foods provide the all-important «satiety» effect that makes meals satisfying. Avoid the processed carbs, like dinner rolls. 2. Pile your plate with salads and raw vegetables. Add some green beans and other cooked vegetables if you like, too. Fruits and vegetables are chock-full of serotonin. And serotonin, when obtained from plant sources, doesn’t contain any inflammatory arachidonic acid!
April 2015 suggests that different protein sources can dramatically affect a person›s mood. 3. Choose lots of seeds and Bottom line? It›s probably a nuts. Pumpkin seeds have one of the good idea to cut out the turkey. But highest tryptophan-to-protein ratios on don›t worry; there are plenty of plant- the planet. Tryptophan from nut sources based foods on the Thanksgiving table increases serotonin levels in the brain. that actually increase tryptophan and Other nut sources of tryptophan include serotonin levels. So try this experiment: sesame, sunflower, and squash seeds. This year, focus on delicious seasonal In one study, consuming squash seeds vegetables, fruits, and grains and see ifT:10.81”significantly reduced the effects of
social anxiety. Numerous other studies link plant-based diets with higher selfesteem and happiness. Many of these studies documented improvement within two weeks. This holiday season, save the seeds from your butternut squash and pumpkins and roast them in the oven for a mood-boosting treat! 4. Just get stuffed! Stuffing, especially when it’s made with plenty of celery, onion, and vegetable broth, is nutritious and filling. It also packs a nice boost of serotonin in each bite. Choose whole-grain croutons if you can find them (or make your own!) for the most filling option. Glenfiddich Reigns Supreme at Federal Grill By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer
F
ederal Grill held a private tasting of Glenfiddich’s 50-year-old limited edition single malt scotch. “The Glenfiddich 50-Year-Old is one of the rarest and most precious single-malt whiskies in the world; only 50 bottles are available worldwide and only six in the U.S. The limited edition bottle, retails for $32,000.” I didn’t make the private tasting; however, Glenfiddich Ambassador David Allardice graciously educated this writer in the fine art of single malt scotch whisky. First of all, Federal Grill‘s amazing staff provided the appetizers and desserts for the sampling. Chef Matt Brice and his team supplied us with an impeccable fruit and cheese plate to begin our tasting. We finished the evening with a dessert and whisky pairing that was so delicious, that this garrulous foodie was at a loss for words -temporarily. We began our Glenfiddich Flight with the brand’s 12, 14, 15, 18 and 19-year-old-blends. As soon as the samples were poured, the bouquet of each glass filled the air space with hints of caramel, oak, and fruit. The youngest of the blends had more of a spice and heat taste in the first sip. Then, we added a drop of water to our drinks which Whiskey Samplings with Fruit and Cheese Plate surprisingly brought out the fruit flavors. This particular elixir matched well with the Gruyère Cheese. Moreover, it also matched perfectly with the Tres’ Leches Cake. The 14-year-old blend paired extremely well with the blackberries and the goat cheese. The second to the youngest in this tasting had more of a spicy taste that just made the cheese taste better. There was not any lingering on the palate or shock from the small amount of heat that one received in the initial nip. The 15-year-old blend was well balanced and had a smooth finish, and paired well with the blackberries also. David said that this one is his favorite of the group because it’s not too light or heavy, and it has a great finish. The older blends such as the 18 and 19-year-old flavors were robust, but smooth, they contained hints of spice, wood, and honey. Number 19 was my favorite; I was so enthralled with Tres’ Leches Cake the unique flavor profile that it had me thinking “I know what I want for Christmas”. It was rich, velvety, and did not over power the chocolate brownie and ice cream that we tasted. In fact, this particular blend enhanced the chocolate notes by bringing out the sharpness in the cocoa. Needless to say, I had a unique and enlightening tour of Glenfiddich whisky, thanks to David Allardice, Chef Matt Brice, his General Manager Peter Nolan and the very attentive staff at Federal Grill. They are located at 510 Shepherd Drive in Houston; their website is: www.thefederal grill.com. 4 Reasons You Need to Stop Sending Happy Thanksgiving Texts
By Demez White, Feature Writer
T
hey usually start around 9am and don’t stop until the last piece of dry turkey has been wrapped in foil. Then you decide to go get some Taco Bell because the thought of anymore stuffing or pie makes you sick. People send them for a variety of reasons. Some are just good-hearted people that like holidays. Some are exes or old friends that are looking for a way to get a foot back in the door. While some are just people that like texts. Although one’s intentions may be good in wishing someone some holiday cheer via their mobile device, you might want to think twice before hitting send. The outcome you hope for probably won’t be the outcome you get. Here some reasons to rethink your next Thanksgiving text. Four- All Batteries Lives Matter- Have you ever tried to keep a phone charged during the Holidays? It’s almost impossible. Our phones go through so much because we have to be connected. If we aren’t on social media looking at pictures and taking pictures then we’re playing a game while waiting in line for sales that aren’t really sales. Combine all that with random texts from people whose numbers were deleted two broke screens ago. It adds up to a consistent 23% battery life. Three- Don’t Be Group Text Guy- Group text guy is the one person that feels the need to send a Happy Thanksgiving text to 29 of his closest family and friends that don’t happen to know each other or want
Sending your ex a heartfelt “Happy Thanksgiving, does your mom still cook those amazing pies?” Type of text won’t lead to you stopping by her house. It won’t lead to her staying on the phone with you reminiscing.
to know each other. On top of that you’ll have the two people that respond to the text and keep it going. Then you have the two people that feel the need to tell people to stop responding. It’s a never-ending purgatory.
It’s only going to lead to you getting your feelings hurt when she doesn’t respond and you look on her Facebook page and see some happy picture.
Two- Just call. If it’s that important, just call the person. I promise you a two-minute conversation over the phone means so much more than a bland, generic text.
Stay away from the Thanksgiving texts unless it’s someone you talk to often. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.
One- It won’t lead to what you think it will lead to.
