COMMENTARY

“

May you live in interesting times.” This curse, attributed tenuously to the Chinese, bespeaks a preference for order over change. We now live in interesting times and Americans are hungering for change. Yet, surprisingly, President Obama enjoys increasing popularity as he heads into the final days of his presidency. Why is the President the most popular politician in America (outside of Bernie Sanders)? As he put it, to be elected with popular majorities twice with the name Barack Hussein Obama, something has to be going right. And something has. He inherited an economy in free fall, losing hundreds of thousands of jobs a month. Wall Street was on the verge of collapse. The auto companies were about to close their doors. Bush left an annual budget deficit soaring above $1 trillion. Millions were at risk of losing their homes, and millions more were losing their shirts as their homes went
POLITICAL By Burt
Obama Steadied the Nation In ‘Interesting Times’ “underwater” -- worth less than the debt owed on them. The U.S. had suffered the worst foreign policy debacle since Vietnam in Iraq. The nation had been shamed as it watched Americans left to suffer after Katrina hit New Orleans. Obama was elected because he represented change and hope. He passed the largest stimulus plan in history -- and staunched the free fall in jobs. He saved the financial system and began putting sensible regulations back on Wall Street. He rescued the auto industry that has now enjoyed its best years in history. He revived competence in government. He passed comprehensive health care reform -- a flawed compromise plan but one that as provided health insurance to 20 million Americans. He raised taxes on the rich and lowered them on the working poor. He pushed a reactionary Congress to begin addressing the real and present danger of catastrophic climate change. The results are apparent. The deficit has been more than halved. The recovery has been slow and halting, but we’ve enjoyed private sector job growth for a record number of consecutive months. And now, with unemployment down around 5 percent, workers are starting to be in demand and wages have just begun to inch upward. The president has governed with grace. His rhetoric informed and lifted us. His family provided admired role models. He suffered insult and obstruction with patience and dignity.
As he would be the first to admit, none of this is sufficient. Our politics remain polluted by big money. Our economy is still rigged to favor the few. Our trade deficit remains extreme. The banks are still too big to fail. Workers still don’t capture a fair share of the profits and productivity they help to produce. The tax evasions of the corporations and rich reach grow ever more obscene. People of color were the biggest victims of Wall Street’s housing frauds, with many yet to recover. The racial wealth gap keeps growing. Workers -- white, people of color, the young and women -- all struggle against the odds. Stunningly, the life spans of white male workers are declining, as drugs, despair, sickness and suicide take an increasing toll. The U.S. is still mired in wars without victory across the Middle East. We still invest too much in making smart bombs and too little in developing smart children. The climate grows more dangerous as global warming accelerates. The president who hoped to bring us together instead was hit by the bitter racial enmities that still divide us. Now we’re nearing the end of a presidential campaign marked more by scandal than by substance, featuring more insults than ideas. Donald Trump captured the Republican nomination by stoking fear and anger. Both candidates have been plagued by scandals, real and invented. Contradictions result. The
Early Vote Exceeds Expectations

hrough the end of Tuesday, November 1, with three days of early voting left to go for the November 8, 2016, General Election, Early Voting across Harris County, Fort Bend County, Texas and the United States has been higher than ever before. It continues, at least according to the research in Harris County, to favor Democrats by a higher margin than any election in decades. As of 7 pm Tuesday when the 46 early voting polls across Harris County had closed 626, 627 people early voted and 86,456 people had turned in a mail ballot. The turnout on Tuesday itself was 72,580. In Fort Bend, 147,000 had early voted in person by the end of Tuesday. By the end of early voting four years ago early voting in Fort Bend County didn’t get higher than 162,000. In 2012, the entire early vote across Harris County was 693,181. In every election the higher the turnout the more likely it is for African Americans, Hispanics and Asian Americans to make a difference in turning the election to favor Democratic candidates. As of Tuesday, research was pointing the early vote in Harris County as “likely” Democrat at 55.26 percent and Republican as “likely” at 44.74.

country hungers for a change in course but is fearful about what comes next. The two candidates for the presidency offering change are looked on with unprecedented disfavor, while the incumbent president enjoys rising popularity. President Obama has suggested that a president is something like a sprinter in a relay race. No one racer can determine the outcome. Your job is to run your part of the race as well as you can -- and then hand on the baton to the next. It’s more complicated than that, of course. The best presidents change the direction of the race to insure that their successors have the wind at their backs. One thing is clear today. Barack Hussein Obama came to office facing harsh economic and political tempests. And he will leave office handing the baton to a successor with the wind at her or his back. More and more Americans are beginning to appreciate that now. And we will appreciate it even more in retrospect. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson.
The mail-in vote in Harris County was estimated 55.23 “likely” Democrat and also “likely” 44.77 percent Republican. In the first week of early voting, 2,102,212 Texans cast in-person ballots in the state’s 10 counties with the largest voting age population, breaking turnout records across the state. In the first week of early voting 486,060 people early voted in Harris County up from 314,252 people in 2008 and 331,487 in 2012. In the first week of early voting 300, 318 people early voted in Dallas County up from 231,839 in 2008 and 221,962 in 2012. In the first week of early voting

In the first week of early voting 207,658 people early voted in Travis County (Austin) up from 207,658 in 2008 and 146,319 in 2012. In the first week of early voting 118,369 people early voted in Fort Bend County up from 76,289 in 2008 and 99,910 in 2012. Hispanic and south Asian (Moslem) turnout is higher than ever it

is said because of Republican nominee Donald Trump’s year of incendiary remarks regarding those communities. African American turnout is reported down compared to 2008 and 2012 in races when America’s first African American candidate for President Barack Obama was on the ballot driving blacks to vote. The highest turnout early voting in Harris County this election has been in traditionally GOP Cypress, Champions, Jersey Village Kingwood, Katy, Tomball and Clear Lake but in those areas minority populations are growing and suburban women may be propelled to the polls to vote Democrat by electing the first woman president or driven by Trump’s anti-women rhetoric. This Tuesday from7 am to 7 pm is the final chance to be heard in 2016 politics. Go vote! Keep in the know on Houston area politics and Houston area election issues with Burt Levine. NAACP Mounts Nationwide Voter Protection Effort The Selma Initiative
n March 21, 1965, thousands of nonviolent protesters marched out of Selma, Alabama alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. Five days later, they arrived in Montgomery and gathered on the steps of the Capitol, demanding equal and full rights of citizenship. Five months later, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act. Today, November 3, 2016, we stand five days away from the first presidential election in more than fifty years in which the Justice Department will operate without the full support of the Voting Rights Act. People of color, seniors, young people and immigrants are uniquely vulnerable this year, with months of warnings of voter fraud and a “rigged” election on the campaign trail. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has launched a nationwide voter protection initiative to safeguard Americans exercising their constitutional rights in this election. We have mobilized our two million digital activists, nearly half million card-carrying members, and 2,200 local units to join our effort. In these five final, critical days before the election – our own Selma to Montgomery sprint – we are working around the clock to protect all citizens from voter suppression. The NAACP national mobilization campaign targets 17 critically vulnerable states and supports all 50. Through door-to-door canvassing, more than 40 in-person phone banks and countless more automated voter outreach drives, we have reached more than 6,022 African American precincts (those with an African American population at least 65%).
“In every presidential election since 1965, we have battled to increase the turnout of black voters, and once again we are doing everything in our power to encourage black voters to get to the polls in record numbers,” said NAACP President and CEO Cornell W. Brooks. “The kinds of threats we have heard in recent months—ID checks, voter intimidation, misinformation campaigns—harken back to the first half of the 20th century. And although the current iteration of the Voting Rights Act is not nearly as powerful as it was, make no mistake: these practices are illegal, and they are wrong.” The NAACP mobilized staff and operationalized national resources to fight voter suppression: ● We joined with the National Election Protection Coalition to make sure every American can exercise their constitutional right this November. ● In voter suppression states like Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Texas, state conferences sent letters to their election officials informing them of voting machine malfunctions which keep voters from electing their candidates of choice, and to provide the required notice for Election Day vote monitoring. ● The Texas NAACP, as a plaintiff in the Veasey v. Perry case, worked to ensure the Secretary of State’s office properly informed voters of their right to cast a regular ballot with alternative identification, if they do not have voter identification, as outlined in the SB14 law. ● We collaborated with BET, the Sheryl Underwood
O
Radio Network and Bishop T.D. Jakes of the Potter’s House in Dallas for a series of national public service announcements and voter education. ● We partnered with other organizations with national networks, from the AME Church to the Divine 9 to the Masons, Shriners and The Links, to get out the vote and raise awareness about voter suppression. ● This week the NAACP sued North Carolina due to discriminatory practices in voter purging. In these final days before the election, the NAACP’s national campaign – our Selma Initiative – is providing crucial voter information and serving as a resource for reporting voter obstruction: ● Members of the NAACP legal team have crossed the country, training organizers on the ground, sharing resources available from the national office and holding webinars with all NAACP regions on how to respond to potential voter misinformation and intimidation tactics. ● As part of its work with the National Election Protection Coalition, organizers have recruited and trained lawyers, law students and other legal professionals to work in call centers on Election Day. ● At the Election Day Command Center at the NAACP’s National Headquarters, volunteers will staff 10 election protection stations and more than 20 phone banks throughout polling hours. ● NAACP experts have set up the Vote Monitor Hotline so voters can directly report efforts to prevent voters from casting their ballots. If you experience or witness voter obstruction on or before Election Day, email votemonitor@naacpnet. org or call 1-866-OUR-VOTE to report the incident or ask for help.

new study of ride-sharing services shows that they might be contributing to racism and sexism in the way they do business. Nearly 1,500 rides tested Uber, Lyft, and other ride-sharing services to rate them based on gender and race. At the end of the trials, the economists found “significant evidence of racial discrimination,” meaning that black riders faced longer wait times and more frequent cancellations than white riders. And riders with “black-sounding names” were significantly more likely to be canceled on than either white riders ors black riders with “whitesounding names.” This effect was worse in lower-

ports news this week had us reminiscing over the legacy of a legend in the game of football and screaming over a curse being broken. Our emotions were all over the place. Here is a recap of this week’s top new stories. Chicago Cubs Become World Champs The billy goat curse is dead. The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions at long last, winning their first Fall Classic in 108 years, defeating the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings 8-7 in Game 7 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The Indians were down 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth, but they got to closer Aroldis Chapman, tying things up with an RBI double from Brandon Guyer and a two-run home run from Rajai Davis. Chapman lost the lead, Cleveland had the momentum, but then play was halted by rain before the start of the 10th inning. The delay lasted 17 minutes. When play resumed, Chicago got to work. Kyle Schwarber got it started with a single off Bryan Shaw. Albert Almora Jr., came in to pinch run and advanced to second on a fly out from Kris Bryant. Anthony Rizzo was intentionally walked, bringing up Ben Zobrist.

our mind is a concrete block. Behind it, you’re pretty sure there are ideas – great ones, perhaps - but freeing them, well, good luck. You’re stuck, your brain is stuck, your career is stuck, and you wish you could get out of your own way so you can move ahead. So read “Let Me Out” by Peter Himmelman, and break through the wall. You are never alone. That’s because you always carry an inner critic with you. There’s always someone inside who holds you back by telling you that your ideas are junk, your thoughts are stupid, you can’t do something, or whatever you try won’t work. Himmelman says it’s time to identify and tame that other you. He calls that inner critic Marv: “Majorly Afraid of Revealing Vulnerability.” Of course, you already know that you can’t let your Marv get the upper hand. The way to start controlling him is to dream big but “specific;” to make exact plans; and to have your own dream, not one that someone else wants for you. Then, know who you are and why you’re here. Those things will guide you. Next, throw out the words “fail” and “succeed.” You will have many chances in your lifetime for both; those words tie you down unnecessarily. Know which phrases are your personal “Elephant Ropes” and try not to let Marv use them. Remember when you once thought you could grow up to become a policeman and a ballet dancer and a veterinarian? Look for that “childlike sense of belief in your ability” and reinstate it; in fact, just learn

The Cubs had eight different players record an RBI, the most of any team in a World Series Game 7. Schwarber went 3-for-5 and finished the World Series 7-for-17 with a .412 average and two RBIs. Zobrist, who went 10-for-28 (a .357 average) with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs and five runs in the series, was named World Series MVP. Let Me Out: Unlock Your Creative Mind and Bring Your Ideas to Life to play again. Don’t put too much stock in stereotypes: just because you work in an industry that isn’t known for being arty doesn’t mean you aren’t. Use your imagination and see yourself in the position you want to be in, five or ten years from now. Stop seeing challenges as negative instead of a chance to use your creativity. Know how to clear a “logjam” in your mind by occasionally heeding that which goes unnoticed. And finally, gather your “personal posse.” They’ll remind you that it’s okay to make mistakes. Creative. The word is right there on the cover of this book. Alas, help on that front isn’t necessarily what you’ll find inside “Let Me Out.” Author Peter Himmelman, himself a founder of a business, offers readers a lot of rousing advice to help focus on dreams, which is wonderful and useful if you’re just starting out. That has little to do with being more creative, however; the “creative” part of the book comes later and is diluted by more U-Rah-Rah. Add in unnecessary cutesy replacements for business buzzwords and “Brain Bottle Openers” that seemed awkward and, well, I spent a lot of time sighing while reading this book. Now. Having said that, I think it may be valuable for a new graduate, a new entrepreneur, or a brand-new hire who needs focus and inspiration. That’s where this book might shine. As for creativity, though, “Let Me Out” only cements frustration. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

t’s no secret that Texas is known to be a meat eater’s paradise, but for those who have decided to pass on the carnivorous side of dining, there are some restaurants that are embracing the lifestyle choices of the vegetarian and vegan patrons. In Houston, we now have an establishment that provides vegetarian meals that seem to have a lot of meat lovers returning to their doorstep. At Green Vegetarian Cuisine, they offer a variety of all vegetable, certified kosher meals, and gluten free desserts that are so delicious that this writer is already planning another trip. Green’s mission statement reads that their goal “is to serve delicious and affordable vegetarian comfort food to our diverse community of customers. We strive to provide a wide range of options for vegetarians, vegans and omnivores alike in order to promote healthier choices in a fast-food world.” The establishment is based out of San Antonio, Texas and is owned by Mike Behrend, Chris Behrend and Mike Evans and they have been pelted with awards such as “Best Vegetarian,” “Best Place to Get a Healthy Meal” and several “Readers’ Choice Awards” and many others. Additionally, the company’s green method extends to all aspects of their business. In fact, “ Green has a recycling dumpster for cardboard, a large bike rack, fair trade organic coffee, free range eggs, uses biodegradable packaging when possible, and will eventually install a cistern to capture rainwater for landscape maintenance.” The Houston restaurant is located at 6720 Chimney Rock Houston, Texas near Bellaire and 59 South. On my first visit I met with Chloe, the General Manager, and she “twisted” my arm and convinced me to try the Chicken Fried Chicken Dinner, with mashed potatoes, kale, and gravy. The “chicken” was actually soy, it was lightly battered and fried, the patties were so light and the texture was so similar to chicken breast that it was hard to believe that it was not meat. Every bite was full of flavor; the kale was sautéed with soy sauce and red pepper flakes, which added a tangy flavor to the vegetable. For the finale’ I tried the Vanilla and Flaxseed cupcake, and I’m so glad I did, this dessert was created without eggs, butter, or milk and is gluten free. The cake was moist, and tasted better than I anticipated; it was not overly sweet and 100% vegan. Green’s website is: www.eatatgreen.com, check out their full menus and plan your trip. They are open Sunday thru Friday and are closed on Saturday for the Sabbath. Moreover, on Sunday’s they open at 9:00 am for breakfast. T
he question of why African-Americans have disproportionate rates of high blood pressure continues to puzzle the medical community and requires further research, according to a new report. The report, which was posted this week and will be published in the November issue of the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, zeroed in on several areas where research is needed to help narrow the divide between African-Americans and others when it comes to high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. “We’ve made tremendous progress in the area of hypertension in African-Americans in recent decades, but it’s still a huge problem,” said the report’s lead author Paul Whelton, M.D., chair of global public health at Tulane University. “African-Americans still have considerably lower hypertension control rates and more complications for any given level of high blood pressure compared to whites. It’s the biggest problem in high blood pressure in this country, and we need to find ways to close the gap for disparities.” “It’s an incredibly important topic to report on,” said University of Michigan cardiologist and researcher Kenneth Jamerson, M.D., who wasn’t involved in the report. “If everyone has the same access to therapies that remediate disease, why wouldn’t everyone have a parallel reduction in disease?” The report noted hypertension is less well controlled in African-Americans compared to nonHispanic whites (49.5 percent vs. 53.9 percent) despite higher awareness and higher usage of blood pressurelowering medications. As a result, African-Americans also have a higher risk of blood pressure-related cardiovascular disease and renal (kidney) disease, according to the report.
Report Calls for Further Research of African-Americans and High Blood Pressure
A group of 33 scientists assembled by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute concluded in the report that more research is needed in the areas of surveillance, nonpharmological approaches, and the use of public health strategies. Another area singled out for research was environmental and social and determinants. “We need more studies on how hypertension is related to race and people’s perception of unfair treatment and the hostility and anger that comes with that,” Whelton said. “There are lots of social factors that affect blood pressure, but when you’re talking about blacks, it’s tough not to come back to factors related to discrimination and racism,” said Jamerson. “Racism is so pervasive, and we really do need more research on that particular stressor.” The report also called for more research in the area of genetic and pharmacogenomics and how they relate to heart and kidney disease caused by high blood pressure. But Whelton cautioned that scientists should be judicious when it comes to genetic-related “precision medicine.” He points out that the report concludes “environmental, behavioral and psychosocial factors probably play a more important role than genetics in the higher prevalence of hypertension in AfricanAmericans.” Whelton said more studies are needed to see
what the relationship is between diet and hypertension in African-Americans — especially healthy diets with reduced sodium and increased potassium. “There may be an insufficient intake of potassium products like fruits and vegetables, especially in areas where you have so-called ‘food deserts’ where you don’t find fresh vegetables,” Whelton said. “Also, in some parts of the country, it may have to do with traditional preparation methods where vegetables are boiled and strained and the potassium is extracted in the process.” Jamerson said a healthy diet and an active lifestyle are keys “to making it easier to control hypertension and add to your longevity.” Some examples are increasing physical activity or increasing potassium intake with green leafy vegetables or avocados. In addition to calling for further research, the report also stressed the need for customized training programs to help young scholars learn better methods of addressing racial disparities in the rate and control of high blood pressure. Training the general public about hypertension may be just as important, Whelton said. “Resistant hypertension is a huge problem, especially among young black men,” Whelton said. “The treatments are good, but they don’t show up for treatment. We have a lot of work to do there.” Jamerson agreed. “You have to facilitate your own visit with the doctor and not wait for your mother or wife to do it,” Jamerson said. “I have so many patients who I ask ‘What medications are you taking?’ and they turn to their wives and say ‘What am I taking?’ … You have to facilitate your own care and come up with your own questions to ask your doctor. You have to prioritize your own health.”

National Black Voter Poll Shows Education, Economy, and Race Relations Shape Strong Preference for Hillary Clinton Among Black American Voters

by Style Newswire
ith the election only days away, a new national poll shows that Black American voters overwhelmingly plan to vote for Hillary Clinton as their choice for President of the United States. Their choice is influenced by concerns about high quality, affordable education, income inequality, jobs, the economy, race relations and racial justice. The National Black Voter Poll found a high degree of engagement by registered black voters in the election, with 96% of respondents saying they will cast ballots. The same number said their friends also intend to vote. Nearly all respondents in the survey said they voted in both the 2008 and 2012 elections. Taken together, the data predict a high voter turnout among Black American voters in the November 8, 2016 election and a strong preference for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. A substantial majority (89%) indicated they will vote for Clinton, and two-thirds (67%) said they strongly favor Clinton. Another 23% declared “moderate support” for her. national random sample of more than 900 voters from 22,000 telephone calls made between October 21 and 30, 2016 by researchers in a joint National Newspaper Publishers Association - Howard University poll. This was the first national-level scientific study focused exclusively on voters who identify as African American, Afro-Hispanic or other black identity. The goal of the research was to develop a profile of Black American voters in a year when race is believed to be a defining factor in the outcome of presidential and congressional races. The vast majority of respondents in the survey identified as Democrats. To the question “In general, do you think of yourself as Democrat, Republican, or something else?” 82% of respondents said “Democrat” and only 2% said Republican. Another 16% said they are either “Independent” or “Other” (9% and 7%, respectively). A large majority of respondents (87%) identified high quality education as an influence in their decisions, and a nearly equal percent (84%) pointed to concerns about college affordability as a factor. Other concerns shaping decisions were the economy and jobs (85%), race relations and racial justice (84%), and income inequality (82%). When asked about where they obtain their information about political candidates, nearly half (46%) said from local TV news, and another fourth (24%) said from cable stations. Approximately a fifth (18%) said they rely on black newspapers for information about elections. Revelations of new FBI

probes into Hillary Clinton’s emails occurred in the midst of the research, prompting researchers to compare participant responses to candidates before and after this news. They found that favorable feelings toward Clinton rose slightly and those toward Trump were cut in half. The sample of more than 900 registered black voters was 70% female and 30% male. When considered alongside the 96% who said they voted in the previous two elections and also plan to vote on Nov. 8, black women show they are at the forefront of social change and political history in the United States, by voting to elect the nation’s first black and now its first female president. A majority of respondents said they had attended college (73%), and were 56 years of age or older. Millennials between the ages of 18-35 accounted for 11% of the sample. Those surveyed were nearly equally split between employed and not-employed (53% and 47%, respectively). Of those employed, 30% said they were federal employees, and 18% said they were union members. Of those not employed, 78% were retired and 22% were unemployed. Nearly half (48%) of respondents said they are married and most (84%) have a religious affiliation (a strong majority of those Christian). The research was conducted using social science survey methods at Howard University. Research findings, however, do not necessarily reflect the personal views of the researchers, the faculty or administration of Howard University, or the members of the National Newspaper Publishers Association. Principal investigators on the interdisciplinary Howard research team included Dr. William Spriggs, Department of Economics; Dr. Terri Adams and Dr. Rubin Patterson, Department of Sociology and Criminology; Dr. Lorenzo Morris, Department of Political Science; and Dr. Carolyn Byerly, Department of Communication, Culture and Media Studies. Principal liaisons from the NNPA included President and CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis, and Chairman of the Board Denise Rolark Barnes.

Lovell’s Food For Thought - Connecting the Dots A House Divided Will Continue To Fall
hen I started this journey more than 50 years ago, little did I realize that I would be at this place in time. As with most people, events shape the direction one ends up going. For me, it was the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 that inspired me to leave my comfort zone and become part of that initial wave of students to integrate schools in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sitting in my 10th grade French class, the announcement of his assassination came across the loud speaker. The following year, I transferred to Robert E. Lee High School. How ironic, the the school I left, member of the Class of 1966 at Southern University Laboratory School, Southern Lab reached out to me for our 50th class reunion. I say ironic in that the I am still waiting for an invitation from the school I did graduate from. In 1968, while attending Louisiana State University (LSU) a string of events led to me to head out west to college, eventually ending at up at the University of California Berkeley. Now, fast forward to my mother developing breast cancer, that event resulted in my heading back south. To be honest, before then, I had no real intentions on returning to the South. I was again in a comfort zone, now on the faculty at the University of California Medical Center at San Francisco, with an office that overlooked the Golden Gate Bridge.
While Black. Having the mentors I had and being at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, no one could really told me that someone could become a full professor at a prestigious university, retired as a dual emeritus professor, be included in the Library of Congress along with numerous other honors, and still be told that one lacks value. And then when one tries to acknowledge ones successes or attempts to challenge the lack of respect by the system, one is told that you are involved in some form of self-aggrandizement. One of my mentors, Dr. Daniel Mazia tried to, but I did not truly realized it at the time. When I asked for a letter of recommendation, in his letter Dan tried to discourage the institution from hiring me, not because I did not exceed all of what they could ever want in a faculty member, but because as a Black faculty member he thought that they would never recognize me for what I would bring to the institution. Dan had never been to the South, but had heard, before coming to this country, all of the stories about the treatment of Blacks in the South. LUCILLE’S HOUSTON, TEXAS
Cooking Up Cocktails Photography courtesy of Almost Christmas
I
n celebration of the upcoming release of ALMOST CHRISTMAS, Houston area members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. had a meet up for a film themed version of ‘Cooking up Cocktails.’ Sorority members spent an afternoon learning about preparing cocktails for the holiday season with the owner of Lucille’s, Mr. Chris Williams. As Lucille’s is a high-end soul food restaurant, the Deltas were also treated to watching their favorite southern style meals be prepared in a cooking demonstration. The women were very excited to receive ALMOST CHRISTMAS themed gift bags, which included red aprons, crewneck sweatshirts, lip gloss and pot holders to take home! This was certainly a very fun event for attendees and they loved that the red aprons matched their sorority colors! The Deltas also encouraged their friends and families to see the movie on November 11. Special thanks to Alief ISD School Trustee, Tiffany Thomas.
