President Obama Writes to Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei About ISIS Fight
resident Obama sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader last month expressing the two countries’ shared interest in beating ISIS, according to two sources briefed on the correspondence. The letter, sent in October to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, conveyed that there is a shared interest in combating ISIS, but said resolving the talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program was a main impediment to greater cooperation, the sources told CNN. One source added it was “the major” impediment. The Wall Street Journal first reported about the letter on Thursday. White House spokesman Josh Earnest would not acknowledge the letter, saying he would not talk about the “private correspondence” of the President “I can tell you that the policy that the President and his administration have articulated about Iran remains unchanged. The United States is engaged in conversations with Iran in the context of the P-5-plus-1 talks to resolve the international community’s concerns about Iran’s nuclear program,” Earnest said. “We have also discussed on the sidelines of those talks on at least a couple of occasions, the ongoing campaign that is being
conducted against ISIL by the United States and 60 members of -- now more than 60 -- members who are part of this broader coalition.” While the United States acknowledged notifying Iran before striking in Syria earlier this year, administration officials have said there is no cooperation between the countries in combating ISIS. Secretary of State John Kerry said there would be no “cooperation,” but the United States wanted to “de-conflict.” “The United States will not cooperate militarily with Iran in that effort. We won’t share intelligence with them. But their interests in the outcome is something that’s been widely commented on -- commented upon and something that on a couple of occasions has been discussed on the sidelines of other conversations,” Earnest said. While there are many other concerning aspects of Iranian behavior for the United States, including human rights and Americans in captivity, the nuclear deal is seen as the major impediment, one of the sources said. The administration did not notify its Mideast allies in Israel or the Gulf about the letter, the other source said. In September, Khamenei said he reject-

Hurd, 37, is a San Antonio businessman, husband, father and former Afghanistan based CIA Special Agent. He is a former Texas A&M University Student Body President and come January will become Texas’ first African American Republican Congress Member since Reconstruction. “This is a clear sign folks in this district are ready for something new. They’re tired of career politicians,” Hurd said from his victory party. “Our message has been resonating in these 29 counties. They want someone in Washington who’s their representative, not just their congressman.” Mia Love was elected Tuesday to become the first African American Republican Congresswoman ever with 50.04 percent of the vote in a race that

ed U.S. overtures to join the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. In comments released by Iran’s FARS news agency, Khamenei detailed what he called “U.S. demands for cooperation.” “During the hard days of Daesh’s attacks on Iraq, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq demanded our envoy in the country (Iraq) that Iran and the U.S. meet for negotiations and coordination on Daesh,” Khamenei said, using a derogatory nickname for ISIS. “Our ambassador reflected the issue to Iran and although some officials didn’t voice opposition, I opposed it and said we will not cooperate with the Americans in this regard since they have a corrupt intention and stained hands and how could we have cooperation with the Americans under such conditions?” Referring to Kerry’s comments that Iran would not be invited to join the anti-ISIS coalition, Khamenei said, according to FARS, “The same U.S. secretary of state had personally demanded (Iranian Foreign Minister) Dr. (Mohammad Javad) Zarif, and called for cooperation with us on Daesh but Dr. Zarif had rejected his demand.” He added that Acting Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, the lead U.S. negotiator in the nuclear talks, “repeated the same demand for cooperation
as the first African American US Senator from the South since Reconstruction having celebrated earlier firsts when he was elected to the South Carolina State House and US Congress in prior races as the first African American to win in those from Charleston known for its harsh history as the “Cradle of America’s Confederacy.” Scott, 49, won 61.16 percent of the vote or 748,781 votes to Joyce Dickerson’s 37.09 percent or 454, 123 votes. He was appointed last year by Gov. Nikki Haley who was re-elected Tuesday as the first Indian American woman governor in the United States. Scott said he is “thankful for the evolution that’s occurred in South, where we’ve seen more progress made than perhaps anywhere else in the nation.” “I want a chance to motivate and encourage and inspire people to make the right decisions for their kids’ future by the policies that we present to them and by the ideas that we discuss. If we do that, I believe the history of America will be better in 20 years.” Back in Texas, Attorney General Greg Abbott was elected Texas’ first wheelchair bound governor with 59.28 percent of the vote and 2,775,589

with Iran” with her counterparts. Obama has made at least two other overtures to the Supreme Leader since taking office in 2009. News of the letter angered congressional opponents of a nuclear deal with Iran. They are already deeply discomforted by details of a possible agreement that have been emerging ahead of an end-of-November deadline. One senior GOP congressional staffer told CNN’s Stephen Collinson that the letter was sending “shock waves” through Capitol Hill and suggested it would also anger Israel and U.S. allies in the Middle East who think the President is already going behind their backs to negotiate a “bad deal” with Iran. votes or more votes than any governor in Texas history. Abbott at his Austin dance hall celebrations expressed great pride in successful efforts he made at winning the women’s vote despite his opponent being a woman and his win of 42 percent of Hispanic votes. He heaps praise often on his wife’s history as a Houston school teacher and principal that is the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants and come January will be Texas’ first Latina First Lady. Pasadena’s Gilberto Pena was elected Harris County’s first Hispanic Republican State Representative in his ousting first termer Mary Anne Perez with 50.65 percent of the vote or 6,009 votes to Perez’ 49,34 percent or 5,854 votes. And despite two years of unrelenting attacks from opponents of legal charges never backed that eventually were found baseless, State Rep. Ron Reynolds, Fort Bend County’s first African American legislator since Reconstruction, was re-elected handily Tuesday taking his opponents to task with nearly 70 percent of the vote. Brown and Me BOOK REVIEW Cold Sweat: My Father James Yamma Brown with Robin Gaby
T By
Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
hroughout your life, your Dad taught you a lot. He was the one holding the back of your bike the first time without training wheels. He showed you how to change a tire. He taught you to make funny sounds, one specialty in the kitchen, and the checkbook balance. Without Dad’s influence, there’d be a lot of knowledge you’d be without – but in the new book “Cold Sweat,” you’ll see that there was one legacy Yamma Brown (with Robin Gaby Fisher) wishes her father had never left her. Yamma Brown still carries a lot of guilt. She says she only lived “a few miles” from the Augusta hospital where her father James Brown was taken on Christmas Eve 2006, but she still had baking and wrapping to do that night. She told him she’d see him in the morning – but for The Godfather of Soul, there was no morning. “I had so many sweet memories of Dad,” she says. Brown and her sister were definitely Daddy’s Girls, pampered but not spoiled; given material things along with love and lessons of hard work. James Brown never forgot where he came from, and he made sure his children knew it, too. But she also learned that her father had a temper, and that her mother was often the victim of his rage. Brown remembers being five years old, and hiding to avoid the sound of her father “pummeling Mom…” She recalls attacking him once, jumping on his back when he chased her mother outside, trying to get him to stop. And she remembers that, when she was seven, Brown and her sister left their father’s house with their mother, and divorce papers were filed.
By
And yet, Brown’s mother wasn’t the only spouse with which James Brown had a rocky relationship; there were other wives he abused, and some returned it. Perhaps because of that which she witnessed, Brown says she grew up with an internal belief that domestic abuse was normal and so, when the man she married after college began to beat her, Brown stayed with him, having “equated abuse with love…” If you followed James Brown’s career during the last years of his life, what you’ll read here won’t be any surprise; as you’ll see, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business also had a hard-working ego that loved publicity. The surprise in “Cold Sweat” is that author Yamma Brown (with Robin Gaby Fisher) writes about his life (and hers) with such candor, beginning with his death, an odd posthumous visitor, and three funerals. Of course, though, this book isn’t just a scandalous tell-all about Mr. Please Please Please (although there’s scandal aplenty): Brown’s tale also offers a dual look at fame and domestic abuse, and adds fuel to the question of why women endure the latter. I liked this generational memoir. It’s remarkably unprofane, quick to read, and it gives fans exactly what I think they want in a show-biz biography. And if that sounds good to you, then enjoying “Cold Sweat” is no sweat. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

We are informed he failed to post the list in the voting booths during early vote which is also required by the Texas Election Code.” Because Texas law allows the political parties to designate the presiding judges in Lane Lewis each precinct carried by that party’s candidate for governor, the County Clerk’s error could require a new election for governor throughout Harris County, because it cannot be ascertained what the vote would have been in individual precincts if the law had been complied with correctly. Miller Outdoor Theatre Brings The Ultimate Michael Experience to Houston
W
hen the world lost the greatest entertainer of all time, Michael Jackson, it was devastated. Fortunately for us his performance legacy lives on and is preserved by that of Joby Rogers. Dedicating his entire life to honoring the memory of Michael Jackson, Rogers has been impersonating the music legend for over 30 years with the stamp of approval from the King of Pop himself. Rogers, along with the UMX dancers, brings Houstonians the production of UMX’s “The Ultimate Michael Experience” that has been described as the closest thing to seeing Michael Jackson live as one can get, to Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday, November 14th at 7:30pm. Rogers says he kind of accidently fell into a career of being Michael Jackson but is anything in life truly an accident or are all things purposeful steps to our destiny? It is all in how you look at it. In the 1980’s one of the hottest thing for a kid to do was to know how to breakdance. Teen dance groups readily popped up. One teen group attended Rogers’ school and while developing their act discovered they needed someone to imitate Michael Jackson. Rogers fit the bill. After his first performance at high school prom to Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” Rogers found himself being booked for shows at a local restaurant and making birthday party rounds. During this era before YouTube.com and social media, word of mouth of Rogers’ performance spread fast. Rogers’ destiny as a Michael Jackson impersonator was sealed after he won $1,000 in a dance/ look-alike competition. That is when he discovered that he could make money doing something he really enjoyed. And the rest is “hiStory.” Rogers went straight into career mode soaking up everything Michael. With no formal dance training, Rogers simply watched countless video, attended numerous concerts, practice and did whatever he could to embody Jackson’s persona until he had mastered it. His work has been featured locally, nationally, and internationally and even caught the eye of Michael Jackson himself. In 1999, Rogers appeared on the cover of the December Millennium issue of Rolling Stone Magazine as Michael Jackson. He was hand selected by famed photographer David LaChapelle and to date is the first and only tribute artist to do this. Following that honor, Rogers got the golden stamp of approval by Michael Jackson himself when he was selected from a field of 116 MJ impersonators as the official substitute for Jackson complete with a letter of authenticity naming him as such signed by Michael Jackson himself. This, of course, catapulted his career as a tribute artist. Now with 30 years under his belt of portray-
8
ing the legendary entertainer Rogers has spent the years since the iconic singer’s death paying tribute to him in a show that honors as well as celebrates Jackson’s body of work called “The Ultimate Michael Experience.” Rogers doesn’t imitate Michael Jackson. He literally becomes Michael Jackson to the appreciation of fans worldwide. Performing Jackson’s greatest hits as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “You Are Not Alone,” “Smooth Criminal,” and the list goes on. Fans often thank him at the meet and greets after the show for doing such an amazing job since many never had the privilege to see one of Michael Jackson’s memorable shows in person. Rogers is grateful for the fan interaction he has during and after the show, especially since this is something Michael Jackson probably wanted to do but because of safety reasons couldn’t. Some of the best parts of the show for Rog-

ers are the Jackson 5 segment and performing “You Are Not Alone” and “Man in the Mirror.” Fans have raved over his performance of “Billie Jean,” “Smooth Criminal,” and the opening of “Wanna Be Starting Something.” The electrifying show appeals to all ages and all senses in a vast multimedia presentation. Visually Rogers enthralls fans in his rhythmic dance movements in the portrayal of Jackson and special effects. But Rogers also teaches fans about those who influence Jackson. For example, most think Michael Jackson created the famous moonwalk. However in “The Ultimate Michael Experience,” Rogers created the video showing old school artists like Cab Calloway and Nat King Cole doing the moonwalk. “Michael didn’t create the moonwalk. He just perfected it,” said Rogers. Although Rogers never personally met Michael Jackson he credits him as being one of his heroes and considers it an honor to portray him. “I think it is important that people understand the impact that he had on the entertainment industry. I mean he is truly, probably the greatest entertainer that we have ever seen. I think it is important that comes across more than the personal problems he may have had. I think it is more important of what he accomplished and what he did with his life,” said Rogers. Rogers hopes fans are blown away by the visuals, choreography and the attention to detail that all evolved have invested into the production of “The Ultimate Michael Experience.” When Rogers is not portraying Michael Jackson he stays pretty busy holding done three other jobs. He is a make up artist educator and teaches at several schools in Connecticut. In fact, Rogers does his own make up to transform himself into Michael Jackson. It takes him two hours. He is also an entertainment journalist for two papers in Connecticut. His most important job is that of being a husband and father of two. UMX’s “The Ultimate Michael Experience” takes center stage at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday, November 14th at 7:30pm starring Joby Rogers as Michael Jackson. This year’s tribute celebrates Houston on Parade with a stellar showcase of the city’s finest attributes - from families, fashion, food, sports and the Texas Medical Center to art and entertainment adding vibrant lift to this 65-year tradition. Following tradition, new floats and high-flying balloons will rule the new downtown parade route along with Tom Turkey, Santa Claus, marching bands, performers and more! “We have terrific sponsors who have made

it possible for this family holiday tradition to continue,” said Mayor Annise D. Parker. “Each year Houstonians have so much for which to be thankful, from advances in medical research and practices in the Texas Medical Center and world-class exhibits and entertainment to international cultures that give this city its character and flavor. This year we will shine the spotlight on the cornerstone of Houston’s greatness - our families.” Grand marshals Bill Klein and Dr. Jennifer Arnold were lured to Houston in 2009 by the Texas Medical Center where Jen is currently an assistant professor of pediatrics, Division of Neonatology at Baylor College of Medicine and Medical Director of Pediatric Simulation Center at Texas Children’s Hospital. Together, they share their personal stories of triumph over adversity to motivate others facing similar challenges. “H-E-B is proud to join the City of Houston and Mayor Parker in sharing Thanksgiving with our fellow Houstonians and continuing this holiday tradition that celebrates families and Houston’s very best,” said Cyndy Garza-Roberts, Public Affairs Director, “H-E-B is always thankful for the privilege to celebrate - whether it’s leading a fantastic parade through downtown, sharing with those without or filling holiday tables with the freshest and most flavorful foods available.” 250,000 spectators are expected to join the fun, as they have since Houston’s first Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1949 when Santa arrived at Union Station and rode his sleigh to the downtown Foley’s. Today, the annual Holiday Parade is produced by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events and will begin on Smith at Lamar, north to Walker, east to Milam, south to Pease, west to Louisiana, north to Clay, west to Smith, and north to end at Smith and Dallas. Beautiful Textures Wants YOU To Fall In Love With Your Hair
E
arlier this year Beautiful Textures launched their TMS (Texture Manageability System) just in time for the beautiful Spring/Summer season. So that naturals worldwide could get that straight look without worrying about moisture and warm temperatures causing revision. Well here we are now in the season of rusk-colored foliage and cool crisp breezes. Just like fashion changes with the seasons so does hair care. Beautiful Textures understands this all to well, which is why they launched a nationwide five-city campaign inviting women to FALL in love with their hair. The Beautiful Textures Fall In Love with Your Hair tour kicked off in Atlanta, GA and ended in Cleveland, OH. The second tour stop was in Houston, TX and educated a packed house of naturals on healthy hair tips and the latest trends for the upcoming winter months. They reached out to influencers in the natural hair community to set up a panel for discussion. Apart of that panel was Naturally GG (YouTube Hair Vloggers), Naturally Happy Hair Magazine, & Queensley (Reality Star: Houston Beauty). “Yes, we really focused on TMS; however, we are still one of the top natural hair care lines,” said Kimberly Walker (Video Content Specialist for Strength of Nature) as she discussed the products that are on hand for fall. Some of the products are: 1. Moisture Butter Whipped Curl Creme® –Revives softness and bounce 2. Curl Control Defining Pudding® – Smoothes and defines styles every day with ease 3. Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner® – Helps control damage and adds brilliant shine 4. Edges to Ends Silkener -Helps dry dull edges & ends. “It’s called Curlism, which is a prejudice that is found within the natural hair community,” said Walker. The panel discussed tips on how to achieve styles using the products and how to transition from season to season as a natural. Additionally, a Q&A took place with the audience and panel. Queensley demonstrated how to use the new shea enhanced Edges to Ends Silkener as an alternative to gel. The audience received a swag bag full of products with Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner and Edges to Ends Silkener. To allow consumers to get a jump-start on the new styles for fall, Beautiful Textures is also offering a $1.00 off coupon good for various Beautiful Textures styling products. This coupon is good at Wal-Mart and other retailers can be downloaded from the Beautiful Textures Facebook page facebook.com/ BeautifulTextures. A versatile blend of comforting ingredients like nutmeg and cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice can flavor a lot more than Thanksgiving pie. Improved Quality of Medicare Plans and Steady Premiums are Great News as Open Enrollment Begins
all is a wonderful time of year. Changing leaves. Cooler weather. It’s also the season for people with Medicare to review their current Medicare coverage, as Medicare Open Enrollment begins. As we prepare for Medicare Open Enrollment, which began on October 15 and ends on December 7, Medicare wants everyone to know that quality continues to improve both in Medicare Advantage and in the Part D Prescription Drug Program. Each year, plan costs and coverage can change. During open enrollment, seniors and people with disabilities across the country have the opportunity to review their current Medicare coverage and see if they want to make any changes for the next year. It’s important for people with Medicare to take the time to make sure their current situation still meets their health care needs best. To help people choose a plan, Medicare calculates plan “star ratings” for Medicare health and prescription drug plans. Each plan gets a number of stars on a scale of 1 to 5—with 5 being the best—based on quality and performance. These ratings are designed to help people with Medicare, their fam-

plans, in addition to information on their premiums and benefits. This year, people with Medicare who choose to enroll in a Medicare health or prescription drug plan will have access to more high-rated, fourand five-star plans than ever before. Approximately 60 percent of Medicare Advantage enrollees are in a Medicare Advantage Plan earning four or more stars in 2015, compared to an estimated 17 percent back in 2009. Likewise, about 53 percent of Part D enrollees are currently enrolled in stand-alone prescription drug plans with four or

more stars for 2015, compared to just 16 percent in 2009. Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, enrollment in Medicare Advantage will increase to 42 percent to an all- time high of over 16 million and Medicare Advantage premiums will have decreased by 6 percent. For people with Medicare, this is good news in how they receive care. Plans that are higher rated deliver a high-level of care, such as improving the coordination of care, managing diabetes or other chronic conditions more efficiently, screening for and preventing illnesses, making sure people get much-needed prescription drugs, or getting appointments and care quickly. A high rating also means these plans give better customer service, with fewer complaints or long waits for care. If you have Medicare and need assistance, you can visit Medicare.gov, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), or contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). You should have received the 2015 “Medicare & You” Handbook and important notices from your current plan, Medicare, or Social Security about changes to your coverage. If you’re satisfied

with your current coverage, there’s nothing you need to do. Better quality in Medicare health and prescription drug plans isn’t the only good news for people with Medicare. For most seniors who have Original Medicare, the 2015 Part B premium will stay unchanged for a second consecutive year at $104.90. This means more of seniors’ retirement income and any increase in Social Security benefits will stay in their pockets. The Part B deductible will stay the same as well. Medicare is working hard to make sure this good news continues so that seniors and people with disabilities will continue to get the health care coverage they deserve. hether quick and efficient or long and relaxing, 61 percent of Americans would rather give up brushing their teeth for a week than remove showering from their daily routines, according to a recent survey commissioned by Delta Faucet. While people may recognize the value of a steaming shower, they may not consider the effects water temperature and beauty rituals have on the body and mind. Healthier hair, softer skin and less stress can be achieved by following a few simple steps: Glowing skin. Cold water can cause pores to tighten, making it difficult to thoroughly clean skin. Conversely, hot water can dry out skin, causing it to become tight. To offer peace of mind and ensure the temperature of the water flowing from your shower or bathtub spout is right for you, Delta Faucet introduced Temp2O Technology – a digital temperature display featuring LED color indicators to easily identify water temperature ranges. Luxurious locks. Where cold water can reduce hair volume, hot water can strip locks of natural oils, leaving hair dry and brittle. Most shampoos work best with a moderate water temperature so be aware of hot versus cold when treating your hair. Olive your new look. Whether harsh summer sun or cold, dry winters – damaged, dehydrated hair can happen year round. Repairing distressed hair does not always mean you need to make an appointment at the salon or stock up on expensive hair treatments. Simply look in your kitchen cabinet. Olive oil adds moisture and shine to lackluster hair, so treat it – wet or dry – at a fraction of the cost. Turn up the volume. After a shower or bath, tousle your hair from root to crown with your fingertips as you blow-dry to create the illusion of fuller hair. When strands are dry, give the roots extra lift by back-combing undersides with a clean, dry toothbrush. Rather than tearing at hair with a comb, the soft bristles will grip and rough up strands just enough to maintain lift. Relaxing fruit bath. After a tough day of sun exposure, stress and pollution – a bath set at the appropriate temperature can help de-stress the body and mind. Start by running a warm bath – 80 to 100 degrees – with a half-gallon of milk and lavender oil, and rub pureed watermelon, a natural anti-inflammatory, on the skin for a soothing finish. Drink up. We’ve all heard about the benefits of drinking water – and they’re true. Add a few slices of cucumber or mint leaves to a glass of ice water for a post bath or shower refresher. Skin care expert and research scientist Warren Wallo explains, “Water helps flush toxins from your body and hydrates your system, for healthy-looking skin and a soft, natural glow.” No matter what your beauty routine may be, the right shower and bathing temperatures make a difference. To learn more about Temp2O Technology, visit www.deltafaucet.com.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
T
he Space City Beat Battle (SCBB) returns for it’s eighteenth iteration on November 15th at Warehouse Live in Downtown. Fresh off a major showcase in Atlanta, Georgia at the A3C Hip-Hop Festival (largest hip-hop festival in the US), this phenomenon has paved the way for emerging music producers and beat makers. While participating at this major event, they represented for Houston amongst the most influential in the nation. It is very awe inspiring to know that our city is thriving on the outside. SCBB began in 2010 to provide a stage for music makers that normally don’t get the same shine as rappers and singers that can’t operate without their sound creations. Each event also serves as a power-networking mixer for the local entertainment scene, which is one of the reasons for it’s continued success. The event consists of a round robin style competition of prepared instrumentals in which each producer must play their best beats or risk getting cut. The victor gets a prize pack consisting of various gifts from clothing to music equipment. Celebrity guest producers and local luminaries serve as judges to choose who moves on to the next round and eventually the championship battle. Major industry heavyweights have been involved with SCBB including Scarface (Geto Boys, Def Jam South), DJ Scratch (EPMD, Busta Rhymes), S1 (produced Power for Kayne West, Won a Grammy with Beyonce, Jay Z), Focus… (Marsha Ambrosius, Dr. Dre), Ski Beatz (Jay-Z, Currency), !llMind (Kanye, Jay Z), Denaun Porter (Eminem, D12) and guest appearances from Paul Wall and Bun B to say the least. The brand is preparing for it’s fifth year by kicking off it’s philanthropic effort titled, BEAT Cancer, which will fundraise to combat childhood cancer. Soon after that the SCBB crew will be preparing for it’s third year as an official showcase at the vast South By Southwest Music Festival in March held in Austin, Texas. The level of talent in Houston is tremendous and the Space City Beat Battle continues to showcase the multitude. Though it remains a very niche event, beat battles have been around for many, many years as a sort of hip-hop subgenre. This episode features special guest judges The ARE, who has produced for LL Cool J, Keyshia Cole, Earth, Wind and Fire plus Nicki Minaj; rap artist Mr. Wired Up (Rap artist, songwriter, CEO of TRP Records, #stripclubjunkie); and veteran deejay/producer DJ Cozmos (Veteran DJ and Producer, 1/3 of Radio Galaxy, The Hue).
