here will be no justice for Laquan McDonald. He is dead, shot 16 times point blank by a Chicago police officer. Now, after over a year, after a dashboard camera video was released by judicial order, the police officer who shot him has been charged with murder. But this is only a first step. For Chicago to heal, many unanswered questions and many unmet problems must be addressed. Disciplined, nonviolent protests have demanded answers. Now it is time for action. This is not simply a case of one bad cop. Nine police officers were on the scene, yet not one reported the police violence. Instead, a police union spokesman alleged that McDonald
POLITICAL
Time for Answers lunged at the police with a knife. That false statement went unchallenged. Why? Witnesses were on the scene. But according to various accounts, the police shooed them away without collecting names and questioning them. Why? The audio from the dashboard camera was indecipherable -- as was that of four other dashboard cameras at the scene. According to a district manager, the relevant portion of a video from the security camera of a nearby Burger King went missing after the police were given access to it. Why? The city fought to conceal the video, contesting Freedom of Information Act lawsuits by independent journalists, by the Wall Street Journal and by the Chicago Tribune. Yet the mayor pushed the City Council to vote a $5 million settlement for the McDonald family before they had even filed a lawsuit. The settlement apparently included an agreement to keep the video secret. Why? The contrast with last summer’s Cincinnati case could not be more stark. When Samuel DuBose was fatally shot on camera by a University of Cincinnati
police officer during a routine traffic stop, the video contradicted the officer’s claim that he had been dragged along the street by DuBose’s car. The video was released, and the officer was charged with murder and fired in less than two weeks. Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez brought charges only after a court ordered the release of the video, after an investigation taking more than 13 months. Why? The mayor says this was the act of one bad police officer who will now face a jury of his peers. The tape shows us who did the shooting. But the question is who contributed to what looks inescapably like a concerted cover-up. This can’t be business as usual. If Chicago is to heal, the truth must come out. The protests have made three basic and sensible demands. First, appoint an independent special prosecutor to insure a fair prosecution. Second, the federal investigation should probe not only the shooting of Laquan McDonald but also what appears to be the effort to cover it up. Those implicated from top to bottom should be held accountable. Third, we need a new police chief and a new police culture. New

leadership and comprehensive reform are vital if trust is to be rebuilt. These are essential and inescapable. Real healing requires even more. We must move from reform to reconstruction. We need a national commission on urban reconstruction. We cannot expect police to provide security in oceans of despair. We need action on housing, schools and jobs. If Chicago is to heal, the police must regain our trust, and the people must regain some hope. You can write to the Rev. ith less than a week to the end of Election 2015 S y l v e s t e r Tu r n e r a n d Bill King smiled and thanked supporters this past week. Then the two Houston mayoral candidates took verbal punches in negative attacks against each other that had not been expected at an Asian Chamber of Commerce confrontation. It was one of only two debates ahead of the Saturday, December 12th run-off election. Following a general election, in which Turner and King made mostly nice to each other a striking change hit the stage at Houston Baptist University, when differences in issues became as bright as the hot lights pointing in both the faces of the UH graduates and decades lawyers, businessmen and single dads made clear their differences in public policy directions. Throughout the general election, Turner stayed positive because he knew in a race with 12 foes he was the front-runner guaranteed a runoff spot. King worked successfully to steer Republicans from Steve Costello. Now both around the clock are knocking each other down on TV. Turner is running advertisements kicking King for Savings and Loan and

delinquent tax law firm histories that hurt working families. While King continues to infer Turner will take Houston from its heights of prominence to the demise of Detroit with higher spending and taxes and a flight in population that has led Detroit from Houston’s two million bustling population to 600,000. “One of King’s closest business partners tried to bribe elected officials and King won’t say what he knew about it,” Turner said. “King doesn’t want you to know about his bankruptcies

and numerous failed businesses.” King countered “He is referring to one of the Linebarger law firm partners who was in charge of an office in the Valley and charged with knowing one of the firm contractors paid a kickback to a local elected official and didn’t do anything about it. At the time, the individual involved was one of about 100 partners at Linebarger. There was no evidence anyone else in the firm knew what he was doing and no one else was charged.”
www.StyleMagazine.com
King said, “What is most hypocritical about this is Sylvester works for Linebarger today! In fact, I hired Turner about a year after this incident to do work for the firm. He certainly did not express any reservations about working for the firm after this incident and obviously it has not bothered him since.” King continued, “If Sylvester insists on getting down in the gutter, he’ll be there by himself.” The two continue to attack each other while debating at HBU. Turner said he was bullish on Houston while King said Turner was full of bull in his plans. “Your choice is clear between a career politician who wants to raise your property taxes by more than four percent a year or a businessman who thinks that the city ought to live within its means,” King said. Turner tempered he loves Houston and wants the best for its citizens. Early voting runs through 7 pm Tuesday, December 8th in the election that also features three single district and four contested city council contests and two hot HoustonISD Board showdowns. s colder months approach, many families enjoy spending time together on the couch watching football, indulging in delicious family recipes and preparing for the holiday season. Many of us look forward to this time of year when we can spend quality time with loved ones, relax, reflect on the year and look forward to the new year ahead. This can also be a challenging time to stay healthy, as people tend to stay bundled up indoors and the food seems to pile up on the dinner table. Learning how to eat well and stay active ahead of the holiday season may mean the difference between staying healthy or packing on a few extra pounds and creating habits that could lead to serious health issues down the road. That is one reason the Aetna Foundation is working to make nutritious foods and exercise programs readily available for families year-round. “Poor nutrition poses a challenge to America’s health, especially for vulnerable populations whose access to healthy food is often limited,” said Garth Graham, M.D., MPH, president of the Aetna Foundation. “We’re excited to support programs that help make healthy food and exercise programs more affordable and accessible to people nationwide.” There is a great need to increase access to nutritious foods in vulnerable communities and to make healthy food available, accessible and affordable for more people across the country. Eat well. When grocery shopping for large (or small) family meals, choose fresh, seasonal, nutritious foods as often as possible. When fresh is not possible, keep in mind that frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are still healthy alternatives. To guard against nutrient loss, be sure to eat frozen fruits and veggies soon after purchase and steam or microwave them rather than boiling to minimize the loss of water-soluble vitamins.

Cook together. As you plan and cook meals for your friends and family over the holidays, inviting your children to cook with you is a great way to teach them about nutrition and better food choices.

Get off the couch. It can be tempting to curl up on the couch to stay warm and dry during the cold winter months, but find ways to stay active with your family – such as interactive dancing video games, an indoor game of hide-and-seek or dancing during commercials while you watch your favorite TV show.

Houston Style Magazine Endorses Sylvester Turner for Mayor of Houston
Sylverster Turner and Supporters
efore any job can begin you must have the right materials and know the procedure to finish the job. Houstonians you have registered to vote, reviewed the rooster of candidates and exercised your civic liberty by voting in the General Election. However, the job is not done. There is some unfinished business on the table. You must finish the job and vote again in the Run-Off Election. Just as you had to have the right supplies to vote, our next mayor also needs to be equipped with the right skills to complete the many unfinished issues and projects within our city. With 25 years of serving the city of Houston in the Texas House of Representatives and living in the city for 61 years, Sylvester Turner has both the experience and passion that our next mayor needs. His dream for the future of the city is sound and is one that embraces as well as benefits all people. He has doable solutions to address our major issues to give us a fix right now. It is for this reason and more that Houston Style Magazine fully endorses Sylvester Turner as mayor for the city of Houston. “As a native of Houston, I have been a witness to how Sylvester Turner’s influence and power have effected positive change for the betterment of our city. I have seen how he has worked hard to make life easier for folks not to just get their vote but because he truly wants to help people. He is genuine in his service, his love for people, and in his love for the city. And those are qualities that I look for in people I do business with and that I interact personally with. So I am happy to call Sylvester my friend in business, in my personal life and I will be happy to call him my mayor,” said Francis Page, Jr., publisher and 8
Dec 3 - Dec 9, 2015
editor of Houston Style Magazine. Turner is a man that is for Houston every day. As a kid growing up in Acres Homes where kids were sometimes put in boxes, Turner knew that his future had no limits. He knew that if could dream it, he could achieve it. Now that his dreams of working in the tall office building in downtown Houston have been realized, he wants to grant the dreams of Houstonians. People should not have to dream of one day living in a safe neighborhood. That should be a reality of their today. Increasing the number of police is not the only solution to safer neighborhoods. The police need to know the neighborhoods they are protecting. This where Turner’s community-policing model comes into play. Officers would not simple ride in to save the day all the time but they would engage in building real relationships with the communities they serve so that both parties can become partners in crime. Smooth roads and better infrastructure can be within our reach with Turner at the helm. Everyone in Houston knows where the worst potholes are on his or her daily route. But not everyone knows where every pothole is located. This is costing drivers thousands of dollars annually in auto repairs. Under Turner’s watchful eye, he wants to start a 24-hour turnaround time to address an immediate fix to costly potholes. Something that Harris County already implements, Turner wants to make it a citywide program. Making Houston better now is Turner’s priority. But also keeping Houston better for future generations is what Turner would like his legacy to be. He wants to ensure that by investing in our children. Just as he dreamed of a better life www.StyleMagazine.com
for himself, today’s children dream of a better life for themselves. We have to give them every opportunity for them to reach their goals and that starts with an outstanding education. Support for public schools must be increased for students, teachers, and faculty. Looking at Turner’s plan and a question pops in mind. How in the world will all of this get funded when our budget is already strained? Well, don’t forget that in addition to being a veteran politician Turner is also a seasoned businessman that knows dollars and cents. He has experience as both an entrepreneur of his successful law firm but also managing the state’s finances as a member of the Legislative Budget Board. After examining the city’s current budget to make sure funds are being used in the most efficient matter, Turner has plans to explore other means to raise revenue which include reviewing the revenue cap, municipal debt, infrastructure funding, and pensions. In 1989, Francis Page, Jr., like Turner, had a dream for Houston. He wanted to be a voice for the minority community by telling the stories that matter to them the most. Houston Style Magazine follows that pattern of thinking by always keeping the community as focus. We believe the next mayor of Houston has to have that same mindset of community focus, love for the city and a mind for business. Sylvester Turner is the candidate that posses all of those qualities and more. Join us in voting early again and vote Sylvester Turner for mayor. With him Houston can dream it, achieve it and get the job done! For more information, visit www. stylvesterturner.com.
BOOK REVIEW
M
by Sonia Manzano, illustrated by Marjorie Priceman
Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
ama says you’d better share your toys. But you don’t mind; it’s Christmas and as long as other kids are careful, they can play with your new gifts, too. Sharing is one of the best things about the holidays, as you know, and in the new book “Miracle on 133rd Street” by Sonia Manzano, illustrated by Marjorie Priceman, it could make your holiday brighter. It was Christmastime, and Jose’s family had the “tiniest Christmas tree ever.” There was hardly room for all the family’s ornaments. Their apartment was small, too, and Mami said the oven was too tiny for the Christmas roast, which made Papi sad. He wished they’d never left Puerto Rico. Everything was bigger there. But how do you cook a great big roast? Jose had an idea, Papi put the roast in a great big box, and they set out for Regular Ray’s Pizzeria. They were barely out the door, when their neighbor, Mrs. Whitman, complained about the noise. On the third floor, Mr. and Mrs. Santiago mentioned that their children weren’t coming to visit this Christmas. Mr. Franklin thought there were burglars in the building, and he refused to come out of his apartment. The Wozenskys on the second floor were worried about money, Ms. Simon was yelling about shopping, and the DiPalma kids were making a huge racket. Even the customers at Happy Full Tummy Food Store seemed very unhappy. Three hours later, though, the great big roast had been cooked in a great big pizza oven and the scent was “most glorious… so garlicky and olive oily and delicious…” It smelled so yummy that Jose felt like he was floating on its perfect, tasty goodness.
“Feliz Navidad,” said Mr. Ray as Jose and Papi headed home – but not before they invited Mr. Ray to share their meal. They invited the Wozinskys on Second Floor, and they asked Mr. Franklin to leave his apartment. Mrs. Whitman came, too, and so did the Santiagos. Each person brought a little something to Jose’s apartment. And that was where a miracle occurred… The first guest arrives at your holiday celebration. Then the second, fifth, eighth, and tenth, and your child might wonder if there’ll be enough for this crowd. The answer, of course, is yes and “Miracle on 133rd Street” will show him how. There’s always room for one more, as author and Emmy Award-winning actress Sonia Manzano proves in this sweet little story that starts out sad and ends in such joy that you won’t be able to stop smiling. The ingenuity of Jose and his papi boost this tale in a perfect way, and I loved how Manzano subtly portrays a multi-level, multi-cultured apartment building and the people inside it. Add in magical, sparkling pictures by Marjorie Priceman and you’ve got an instant holiday classic. Though this book is mainly for 4-to-8-year-olds, I think slightly younger children might sit still for it. One read-through or bedtime read-aloud, and your kids will agree that “Miracle on 133rd Street” is a good story to share. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

Rocking It with Chris Rock
Chris Rock Divorce Getting Ugly, Shocking Claims about Wife and Daughter
hris Rock has just dropped a bombshell about his soon-to-be-ex wife, Malaak Rock, and his 7 year-old-daughter‚ at least the beautiful little girl whom we thought was his daughter. Chris and Malaak are currently going through divorce proceedings after 18 years of marriage, which is like 100 years in Hollywood, and apparently the allegations and truths are coming out as they play tug-of-war over Chris’ $70 million. Here is what Chris alleges regarding his wife and daughter: Chris Rock has not seen the 7-year-old girl who lived with him since she was an infant in more than a year and we were told it is because he believes his estranged wife Malaak did something shady to get her here in the first place; a bizarre story and one that triggered an international investigation. Here is what we know. Back in 2008, a 6-month-old named Ntombi from South Africa began living with the Rock family. Her biological parents reportedly were unemployed South Africans and somehow the kid ended up at the Rock home. The girl stayed in the family house ever since the day she first moved in. Ntombi was even enrolled in a New Jersey school. The family had been living as one happy unit until trouble in love and divorce proceeding were started. Then everything changed. Chris maintained his relationship with his 2 biological daughters but hasn’t seen Ntombi since the split. Around the same time as divorce docs were filed, South African officials opened an investigation to determine how the child went from their country
Chris Rock and daughter
to the U.S., when there was no evidence of a legal adoption. As far as we can tell there was never an adoption. It is still unclear how and why the biological parents allowed Ntombi to live with the Rock family for years. Chris says he does not have an adopted child. We tried reaching Malaak’s lawyer but did not get a return call. As for why he went radio silent with Ntombi
sources connected to Chris say he never signed legal docs to adopt her and bringing her over to the U.S. was all Malaak’s doing. If these allegations are true, this is a really touchy situation. On one hand, Chris probably really loves the little girl because it seems he bonded with her as if she was his own for the first 7 years of her life. On the other hand, as he and Malaak are battling it out over how large of a chunk of his $70 million she is going to stack up, he could be trying to make sure he keeps as much of it in his bank account as he can. And one of the ways he could be doing so is by temporarily having to downplay his relationship with his “un”adopted daughter so that she can’t be used for further financial gain on Malaak’s end in court. Throughout it all, the 7-year-old daughter suffers and it is really sad. Both parents are in a tough situation right now and just like in any other divorce where there are young children involved and assets to divide, it is usually not an easy process for the child or the parents. In the Rock case, the money makes the situation all that more difficult. Hopefully they can reach a common ground some way, some how for the sake of their children. What do you think about Chris Rock coming out about the not adopted child? Is Chris wrong for this, or handling it the best way he can right now? Juicy Culture on the move to bring it to you first. Kobe Bryant: NBA Great to Retire at End of Season
“
ailing knee. The procedure, which was not licensed in the U.S., extracts blood from a patient before spinning it in a centrifuge and reinjecting it as a healing agent. B r y a n t Kobe Bryant played in 70 and 78 games over the following two seasons, but has struggled to stay on the court ever since. All of Bryant’s championships were won under coach Phil Jackson, who the player consulted before making his decision. “Phil understands,” said the player nicknamed “Black Mamba”. “He and I understand each other. He said, ‘Break the season into sections. Just take it one chunk at a time and try to get through it.’” During the first of his Finals runs, Bryant formed a devastating tandem with Shaquille O’Neal -- then the most dominant player in the league. But egos clashed, causing O’Neal to be traded to Miami in 2004. By 2008 the Lakers traded for Paul Gasol, who formed a close relationship with the team captain. The two would often be heard conversing in Spanish (Bryant also speaks Italian, having grown up in Italy), and their chemistry notched a further two championships under the Phil and Kobe era. “We have lived incredible moments together on and off the court. Thanks for everything brother!” Gasol tweeted, after hearing the news. Never trigger shy, Bryant’s scoring prowess was encapsulated in an 81-point performance against the Toronto Raptors in 2005, the most since Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points in 1962. Not even Michael Jordan -- his mentor on and off the court -- achieved that feat, though Bryant will not be
Motez Bishara, CNN
My body knows it’s time to say goodbye” wrote fivetime NBA champion Kobe Bryant as he poetically announced his intention to retire at the end of the season. During a 20-year career with the LA Lakers, the 37-year-old has scored 32,683 points, though in recent seasons his form has been hindered by injury. Bryant signaled his plan to retire in a poem on the Players’ Tribune website, later telling the media he felt “at peace” with his decision and “excited for what’s to come.” Ranked third on the NBA’s all-time list, the two-time Olympic gold medalist averaged more than 25 points in his 1,293 NBA games. Catch Bryant while you can: his final game is set to be at home against Utah on April 13 -- unless the last-place Lakers can pull off the unlikely and qualify for the playoffs. “I feel very solid in my decision,” Bryant told a press conference following his announcement on Sunday. “Do I want to play again or don’t I? It’s a very simple question, but it’s a hard question to look in the mirror and ask yourself. The reality is: No, I don’t. So why labor it?” Bryant’s verdict is not surprising, as his body had been failing him over the past few years. The 2008 league MVP and five-time champion has played in only 41 games over the previous two seasons, after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in April 2013 and torn rotator cuff in January. Though he has starred in 13 of the Lakers 16 games this season, his declining numbers indicated the end was near. Bryant is shooting only 30% from the field and 20% from 3-point range while averaging 15.5 points per game -numbers that recently caused him to say he was the “200thbest player in the NBA.” Turning pro directly out of high school in 1996 -- as the youngest NBA player ever, at the time -- and enduring long runs into the playoffs, Bryant’s body suffered more wear and tear than his peers. In 2011 he visited Dr. Peter Wehling in Germany to perform a controversial “blood spinning” process on his
matching Jordan’s mark of six championships in his last season. The two spoke before Bryant made his announcement. “He was actually one of the first people that I told over the summer,” Bryant said of the Bulls legend, while asking how Jordan -- who came out of retirement twice -- made his career-ending decision. “We’ve been in frequent contact,” Bryant said. “We had some laughs back and forth about it. The important thing from him was to just enjoy it no matter what. Just enjoy it. Don’t let anybody take that away from you, no matter what happens. Good or bad, enjoy it.” Known as a gym rat whose 5am workouts would put much younger teammates to shame, Bryant expects to devote his newfound spare time into nurturing his business interests. He launched branding company Kobe Inc. last year, and has dabbled in film production. Like Jordan and fellow Lakers legend Magic Johnson, Bryant expects to take his business interests to the same elite level achieved on the hardwood. “I was in Milan and wanted to meet with Giorgio Armani and talk to him a little bit about how he built his business,” Bryant said. “He started to build his business at the age of 40, and I was 21. “I said to myself, I’ll probably play to 35, 36, whatever the case may be. He built a whole business at 40. What am I going to do with the rest of my life? What comes next? “From that point on, I started figuring things out, trying different things. Dabbling in this, dabbling in that, trying to figure out what exactly that passion is,” he added. “It’s not as easy as basketball, because I was born to play basketball and had to really work to figure out what comes next. “That’s really hard, man; really, really hard. But that’s what we as athletes have to figure out.” For more information, visit www.cnn.com.
