n the horror in San Bernardino, Calif., a husband and wife walked into a social services center armed with two AR-15 style semiautomatic assault rifles and two 9 mm semiautomatic handguns, with 1,400 rounds of ammunition for the rifles. They opened fire, leaving 14 dead and 23 wounded. We now know that they had apparently committed themselves to the Islamic State. This was an act of terror. In Colorado Springs, Colo., Robert Dear walked into a Planned Parenthood clinic armed with a “long gun” and started shooting, leaving three dead and nine injured. This, too, was an act of terror. Mass shootings -- with more

POLITICAL By

We Must Break the Partisan Deadlock Over Guns than four victims -- occur in this country at the rate of more than one a day. There are more guns now in private hands in America than there are people. Our weak gun laws make it “just too easy,” as President Obama put it, for terrorists or the mentally unbalanced or the irate to walk in and buy an assault weapon, designed explicitly to kill lots of people in battle. The San Bernardino killings have triggered a fierce political debate. Republican presidential candidates are using the occasion to indict President Obama for being too passive or too weak. Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio condemn the modest reforms to limit NSA access to private telephone records, suggesting that the right to privacy and the Fourth Amendment must be sacrificed in order to counter terrorism. They call for a war on all fronts against terror -- except on guns. Rubio joined with his Republican senators to kill a modest bill seeking to close the loophole that allows people on the terrorist watch lists to buy guns in America. While the fight against terror requires sacrifice and war, he argues, it should not restrict the right

of those on terrorist watch lists to buy and hold arsenals. The ban on the sale of assault weapons used to enjoy bipartisan support. Closing of all loopholes for background checks seems just common sense. In fact, four in five Americans support background checks. Similarly numbers would prevent the mentally ill from owning guns. Seven of 10 support creating a federal database on gun ownership. Majorities would ban the sale of assault weapons. Despite this, common sense gun control has become a bitter partisan issue. The Washington Post reports that from 1993 to 2007 Republicans were split about 50-50 on gun control, with Democrats 2 to 1 in favor. Then after the election of Barack Obama, Democrats didn’t change their views, but now 75 percent of Republicans line up against more gun control. Gun ownership -- even of assault weapons --is increasingly defended as a “check against government tyranny.” After Colorado Springs or San Bernardino, or Connecticut or Oregon or Virginia or South Carolina, the gun lobby and their allies argue that more guns are the

answer, not part of the problem. Common sense gun control won’t happen until this partisan divide is broken. It can advance in blue states, perhaps, and in blue municipalities where the state hasn’t banned local action. National reforms won’t happen until people break the partisan stalemate. This is a time for people of faith -- of all denominations -- to come together and demand common sense reforms to limit the gun epidemic that continues to spread. You can write to the Rev. Houston’s Future Hinges in Razor Close Races

Burt Levine, Political Writer

E

arly voting ended at 7 pm on Wednesday, December 2nd with 113,386 Houston citizens participating in the run-off early vote week. Many were hoping to tip what is being broadcast as the most razor close mayor and for the first time across the board political party involved city council and controller contest in Houston’s history. Sylvester Turner and Bill King are locked in a 38 percent tie, said a breaking KHOU poll. “I’ve polled since 1979,” said Bob Stein, the Rice University political scientist who supervised the survey. “I don’t recall ever seeing a race this close in the runoff. Usually at this point in the campaign, one of the two candidates has, if not a significant lead, an approaching significant lead. I’ve never seen a race this close.” Turner, a Democratic state representative who’s making his third run for the city’s top job, was considered the lead contender all year. However King, backed by Republican Party and Tea Party activists, came from obscurity to run-off former Sheriff Adrian Garcia. Initially voters thought the two front-runners were Turner and Garcia and not Turner and King. Garcia has since endorsed Turner while iconic characters from black rapper Willie D, businessman Jim “Mattress” McIngvale

4

and former Congressman/Councilman Chris Bell have endorsed King. “We see no evidence of either candidate leading, so I think both are going to work extremely hard, come rain or shine, to turn out that base,” Stein said. “Upwards of half the vote, maybe more, will be cast on Saturday.” Rain is expected for Saturday across Houston. Political lore is that African Americans do not come back to vote in run-offs and specifically are less likely to vote on cold, wet Saturday December run-offs filled with Christmas shopping distractions.

Dec 10 - Dec 16, 2015

An analysis of those who refused to commit to a candidate in polling is that about half those voters—51 percent—are Caucasian and an insignificantly lower number—48 percent—are African-American demonstrating that African Americans are for the most part committed to Turner. Turner has historically earned enough African American votes to earn run-off spots but not enough African American enthusiasm to propel African American voters back for run-offs. Analysis of early vote strength shows the strongest sites remained

www.StyleMagazine.com

the Turner hot spot at West Gray near Montrose that brought out 10,450 early voters highly motivated by Turner’s gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender political caucus support. Followed by Spring Branch with 6,962 voters and Kingwood with 6,595 voters, where Spring Branch Republicans and the Kingwood Tea Party have sent out their own glossy and gigantic mail pieces to push their people to the polls. The City Council races are also close in polling numbers causing some who have never voiced their opinion to speak up. Houston Black American Democrats (H-BAD) and the Harris County Republican for the first time have taken aggressive stands in all the at large Houston City Council run-off races. Bayland Park on Bissonnet near Hillcroft attracted 5,420 voters motivated by the close contest between incumbent Mike Laster and challenger Jim Bingham. Fiesta Mart early vote site near Houston’s historic Third Ward attracted the next number of early voters at 5,435. If you did not vote early, make sure you vote on the general election day on Saturday, December 12th. For more information, visit www.stylemagazine.com.

Lovell’s Food for Thought: The Engrained Impact of Slavery

By Dr. Lovell A. Jones, Health Editor

D

o we really want to solve health inequities or any inequity in this nation? The answer that keeps coming to mind is a resounding no. In my forty plus years in dealing with this issue, being on the front lines in the battle to desegregate schools in the South to the halls of one the most prestigious Universities in the nation to retiring from the number one Cancer Center in the nation, I have to turn take into account the realities of what Benjamin Franklin predicted as the impact of America’s failure to deal with the insidious nature of slavery on the American psyche. One can’t deny that when America and its people wanted to solve an issue, it does with no if ands or butts about it. That is when the issue does not involve race. This has been an unsolvable issue, especially when regarding African Americas. At times, it has spilled over to others populations, for instance, Muslims during 9/11. How, for African Americans, the impact of steroid typing is constant and consistent. For the most part, one constantly hears about cabs not stopping for African American males when hailed. Just ask any dark skin brother wearing a brooks brother’s suit who has tried to hail a cab in the evening. To solve this issue, it would first take 6

open mind and the willingness to admit that it does occur. However, for the majority of white Americans and their minority friends who rail again the idea that racism still exist, there seems to be something to lose. Now, before you jump to the conclusion that I believe every incident has a racial connotation, far from it. It is the fact that too many of these incidents do. This has a historical context that has become engrained in our society, whether we like it or not.

Dec 10 - Dec 16, 2015

www.StyleMagazine.com

Benjamin Franklin, not noted for being a liberal in his day, attempted to foretell the impact of the psychological trauma or slavery on the fabric of America. HE stated shortly before his death that if we, as a nation, did not deal with the issue of race and the impact it was having on early American society, we will continue to suffer as a nation, and that it would get worse as time moved forward. In his last public act, Mr. Franklin presented to the US Congress a petition on behalf of the Philadelphia Society for the Abolition of Slavery asking for the slavery to be abolished and an end to the slave trade. The petition, signed on February 3, 1790, asked the first US Congress, then meeting in New York City, to “devise means for removing the Inconsistency from the Character of the American People,” and “promote mercy and justice toward this distressed Race.” The Senate took no action and the House tabled it, claiming the Constitution restrained them from prohibiting the importation or emancipation of slaves until 1808. Franklin, in a public forum stated, “Slavery is such an atrocious debasement of human nature, that its very extirpation, if not performed with solicitous care, may sometimes open a source of serious evils.” Share this story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

Questions,” inviting people to ask questions and get the answers they need, such as these: Q: Do nasal mists cause the rebound effect? A: Nasal mists are drug-free and derived from natural ingredients – they contain only salt, sodium bicarbonate and water. They are non-addictive and do not cause any rebound congestion.

A

s the holidays approach, many are gearing up for Thanksgiving dinners, holiday shopping and celebrating with family and friends. But with the unpredictable cold and flu season, it’s equally important to add staying healthy to your list. To help answer your most pressing queries, Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and host of the Emmy Award-winning talk show “The Doctors,” has partnered with Church & Dwight Co., Inc., the maker of Arm & Hammer™ Simply Saline™ nasal mists, on a new online tool called “Congestion

Q: I have been experiencing nasal congestion for days. It’s so bad that now I’m unable to blow my nose. How can I find quick relief? A: Saline irrigation is an excellent way to relieve this sort of nasal congestion. Using either a nasal spray like Arm & Hammer Simply Saline Nasal Relief or a neti-pot ought to help flush out your nasal passages and help loosen your congestion. Q: I use saline mists and other medications when I need to for my children, but how else can I ease the symptoms of stuffy noses and sore throats? A: Helping little ones feel better when they are sick is always a priority for parents. How best to help is often dependent on the cause. Some traditional treatments

that can help soothe and clear stuffy noses include chicken soup or warm drinks with a little lemon or honey, although you should not give honey to a child less than one year of age. You should also make sure the house is kept at a comfortable temperature and perhaps consider a humidifier if you are in a dry climate. Finally, always make sure your children are staying hydrated and eating well. Q: Why do I get congested mostly at night? A: Many people find that their congestion gets worse at night. This may be because when you lie in bed, gravity is no longer playing its part in clearing your nasal passages naturally, so you should try propping your head up with an extra pillow or two to find some relief. You may also want to reduce the allergen levels in your bedroom by keeping pets off your bed and buying hypoallergenic pillows. A saline spray like Arm & Hammer Simply Saline Extra Strength Nighttime Relief with natural eucalyptus can help quickly clear congestion so you can breathe easier and comfortably fall asleep, with no day-after effect. Behind the Music: Chinara Butler Discusses The Legacy of Pimp C & More Ahead Of “Long Live The Pimp”

Smith, Special to Style

I

f “heavy is the head that wears the crown,” imagine that of one forced to wear it in the king’s absence. Having stood firmly behind the throne of the man largely considered the “Underground King of the South,” for Chinara Butler the 2007 death of Pimp C meant the loss of her better half. Kind hearted, brash and unapologetic; let’s be clear, there will never be another Pimp C. His sudden passing dealt a swift blow to the industry, leaving a hole that has yet to be filled. Brimming with a refreshing passion rarely seen today, in addition to a treasure trove of music he also left behind a solid reputation of saying exactly what he meant and sticking to it. In the several years since his death, his wife has worked tirelessly to preserve both his legacy and rightful place in hip-hop lore, bringing artist including 8Ball & MJG, Bun B, Lil Wayne, Nas, Slim Thug, Juicy J, David Banner, A$AP Rocky, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Keke and T.I. together for a posthumous album appropriately titled “Long Live the Pimp.” The first batch of fresh music from the UGK co-founder since the 2006 release of “Pimpalation.” Speaking exclusively with Houston Style Magazine, Chinara discussed everything from the new album to the possibility of seeing “Sweet James Jones” immortalized o the silver screen. Houston Style: It’s been a long time coming and the fans are definitely ready for it. Tell us about the process behind pulling this album together. Chinara: I made up my mind a minute ago that this could be a real solo project. The process was ‘Ok, what other ideas did he want to accomplish before he passed?’ That was sort of my thought process in getting it done. We talked about some of this maybe about six months before (his death.) We worked as a team, I was always involved. I’m private, Chad was out there. So in saying that, I just really wanted to be involved as his partner that’s taking care of business. There were a lot of things that he wanted to get done. I know he wanted to do projects with Too Short, with Juicy J, etc. Juicy called me like, “Chinara, we ready for some Pimp.” We did something with Wiz, did something with A$Ap, who’s like family, and we put

Chinara Butler and Mr. Lee

out a few songs. I sat with A$AP again and he said, “Chinara, this project gotta be the s***.” So I knew that if I was going to do it, it had to be done right. It was like, “You’re right. This gotta be the s***, because this is a real story.” I linked up with Mr. Lee and we just went over ideas back and forth. It was a beautiful process and there were no egos involved. It was a wonderful thing. I came from a fan’s point of view. Chad met me in the studio. I’m a fan of UGK. I’m a fan of Chad. I’m a fan in general. Houston Style: Packed full of solid features, tracks like the Lil Wayne assisted “3 Way Freak” had many

8

of us wondering whether it was classic Wayne pulled out the vault, but then you hear the references and realize It had to be recent. Chinara: *laughs* A lot of people have said that. I think that what you’re hearing is just love. It was all love. Everyone that joined the project just had so much love for Pimp…and it showed. That’s nothing but love, that’s really what you’re hearing. I have to thank everybody that’s on it. It was just so genuine. Houston Style: Do you have a personal favorite cut from the album? And can fans expect more music down the line? Chinara: I like “Ain’t S***” (ft. Devin the Dude & Ty Dollar $ign,) I like what Ty brought to it. I like the David Banner one (“True to the Game.” Corey Mo called me and with some things he was working on and when I heard it I knew that would be the outro. Chad loved to talk his s***, so I knew that was necessary. But it’s hard for me to pick a favorite song because all of the tracks aren’t on the album. There’ll be more songs added to the extended version that’ll be released on his birthday (December 29th.) I have my blueprint on what I can do even better, but right now I’m just focused on rolling this out the right way. Houston Style: Should we hold out hope for new UGK music? Chinara: My mission is to keep Chad’s name alive, but they were a group and I don’t want to step on that legacy. That’s their thing. That’s their legacy. Houston Style: We’ve seen films like “Ray” and “Straight Outta Compton” break records when they hit theaters. Do you think we’ll ever see Pimp’s story told via his own biopic? Chinara: You’re actually one of the first to ask that. Of course, I have a movie in my head. It’s something me and Juicy discussed a couple of years ago. It’s definitely a story that needs to be told. Houston Style: You mentioned initially meeting Chad in the studio. Tell us a bit about your own background. Chinara: I’ve always been a fan of music. I feel like I’m a product of my environment. I’m not going to be around just to be around, so I kind of watched a bunch of stuff, listened and absorbed. Being the spouse of an artist, you’re going to be around. Like when Chad would come home, he would bring CDs that we would check out together. I just love music in general. Houston Style: What’s a misconception that you feel people have about Chad? Chinara: The fact that he’s way more sensitive than people think. He had a heart of gold and I think that a lot of people didn’t realize that were hearing him react in a certain way because he was so passionate about what he believed in. Houston Style: You recently rolled the album out early for a listening event here in Houston. Anything special lined up for the official release? Chinara: We’re actually going to do a “Long Live

Pimp C” players ball for the album release. The details are still being pulled together but I’m excited to bring it to Houston. I’m also going to do a coat giveaway, you know he loved his coats. Houston Style: Now that’s dope! With an exhibit on the way at Rice University and a collection with Black Scale, you’ve managed to stay extremely busy. Anything on the horizon for yourself? Chinara: There’s a self-help book on the way called “Bossin Up” that I want to finish up. It’s probably coming at the middle or near the end of next year. It’s just about dealing with hard times, sorrow; things that other women and widows like myself can relate to. Houston Style: With death comes vultures. How did you cope with the madness following his death? Chinara: Vultures come with the territory. You gotta stay resilient. I knew what I was stepping into. I appreciate my team, I had a great support system. My daughter, my team, Cherrell. It’s important to have solid, genuine people around. I’m Jamaican and Creole. It’s been hard but I’m a fighter. They don’t respect women. They don’t give respect to wives. I felt like Chad’s whole being was to inspire people. I want to inspire other widows so they won’t be afraid to speak up. Houston Style: From Faith to Eazy E’s widow, it seems that some people like to lump all of you together. How do you manage to maintain your own identity? Chinara: I’m not fond of being compared because everyone has their own path to walk and their own cross to bear. I don’t go by “Pimp C’s wife,” I go by Chinar. Being seen is not one of my goals. I just want to make new lanes for other widows. I’m a hustler, I’m a creator and I’m a fighter. And I’m going to keep fighting to keep his legacy alive, “Long Live the Pimp.” The undisputed Texas legend may be gone, but he is definitely not forgotten. “Long Live the Pimp” indeed. BOOK REVIEW

C By Terri

Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

hestnuts roasting on an open fire seem so cozy. Just humming that tune warms you up, right? Roaring flames on hearth or sand always seem welcoming, even romantic – except when they go out of control. And as for the person who puts out a fire like that, as you’ll see in “Firefight” by Ginger Adams Otis, flames aren’t all they battle. Sometimes, the fight runs deeper, as Wesley Williams learned on January 10, 1919. That was the day Williams left his young family in their Bronx apartment to report to his new job as New York City’s first (according to newspapers) black firefighter. It was a 45-minute ride to Little Italy, and he knew he could never be late. What he faced that day, and for months, wasn’t what he hoped to get from the job. He’d receive a $1,500-a-year salary and benefits of which few black men would dare to dream. He also received discrimination, subtly and overtly, but Williams persevered and thrived: in later years, he worked his way up to battalion chief. That was no easy feat for an African American man in early-to-mid 1900s America. Though black citizens represented a good part of New York

Firefight: The Century-Long Battle to Integrate New York’s Bravest City’s population, black “smoke eaters” were few in both police and fire departments; often, just 3 percent of the entire department. Early-on, they had little security or clout, which is why Williams formed the Vulcans, a fraternal order for African American firefighters, in 1938. Still, Jim Crow hazing, testing biases, and lack of urgency in City Hall kept many potential African American recruits from the FDNY. Some eighty years after Wesley Williams became a firefighter, the situation was different, but similar: racism lurked quietly in pockets of the FDNY, testing continued to be a thorny issue, and there was still a disparity in numbers for “Bravest” African Americans. The Vulcans had long lobbied for change, with limited success and so, post-9/11, they took a drastic and controversial step… In a way, I saw “Firefight” as two distinct books in one. First, readers may be shocked to learn of the racial imbalance perpetuated in such a large and esteemed department in one of our largest cities, and what had to be done to set things right. That account of modern-day struggles is how author Ginger Adams Otis kicks her book off, and though she winds recent happenings nicely around that of the past, the many names and legal skirmishes can become overwhelming

for readers outside New York. Fortunately, the history of New York firefighting and the decades-old story of Wesley Williams comprise the other half of this book, and the latter is compelling. It weaves through Otis’ account of the present and tempers it; indeed, if your mind wanders, it’ll snap back when Wi l l i a m s ’ n a m e appears again. Fire buffs in particular will appreciate this book, as will anyone who loves a peek into the past with a dash of excitement. Yes, part of it may be a challenge to follow but the other half of “Firefight” will inflame you. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

Host a Holiday Cocktail Party to Remember Courtesy of Family Features

W

ith the holiday hosting season knocking at the door, break from the mold of the traditional gathering with a more modern way to entertain. Throwing a cocktail party, complete with variations of classic holiday recipes, and taking advantage of the relaxed, come-and-go atmosphere is an easy way to make countless holiday memories without spending days in the kitchen to prepare. Jessica Sturdy, lifestyle expert and the blogger behind Bows & Sequins, shares these tips for making your seasonal soiree one to remember: Signature Sips — Creating a custom cocktail is an easy way to add something festive and personalized to toast your guests, which can include traditional holiday flavors like cranberry, peppermint, cinnamon, fig or champagne. Prepare a few pitchers beforehand so guests can pour themselves, leaving you time to enjoy your company. If time permits, type up a drink recipe card and place the print out in a fun frame to include at the bar. Please All Palates — Keep all appetites happy with a charcuterie board by gathering an assortment of your favorite cheeses – perhaps cheeses from around the world or locally. Mix with an array of meats, crackers and mustards which pair nicely with something more acidic, like dried fruit, pickles or olives. Smoked over real hardwoods, Johnsonville summer sausages are a delicious choice to help anchor the platter. Display on a tray with character – even an old mirror – to make even the most basic meat and cheese display festive and amp up your serving platter with natural materials, such as herbs or festive holly. Capture the Moment — Invest in an old-school instant film camera to create your own throwback photo booth. The quickly developed photos will make for great parting gifts. You can make cute signs that include holiday slogans with a little cardboard paper, glitter and sticks that your guests can use as easy DIY props, and a simple holiday wall banner or sparkly wall tinsel will create the perfect backdrop. You can also purchase disposable cameras to leave around the party to capture all of the fun moments you may have missed playing host. It’s a fun surprise to develop them after the party. Leave the Cold at the Door — Make your guests feel at home by lighting a fire and positioning some holiday scented candles throughout your space. Just be sure to keep the candles away from the food so as to not sour the taste or smell of your hors d’oeuvres. Create a playlist that sets the mood you want your party to embody; from festive Christmas carols to classic jazz to this year’s top 50 countdown, your music will set the pace and make your guests feel welcome. Expect the Unexpected — The key to a happy host is a stress-free host. Be sure to leave yourself with plenty of prep time, have your house cleaned and the bar cart stocked with plenty of clean glasses the day before your event. Purchase backup food items that can easily be passed around during the party without the extra prep time, such as nuts, popcorn, pretzels and peppermint bark, and don’t forget that you can never have too much ice.

ndependent artist Bishop3rd000 is not just another rapper; he is a hip-hop revolutionary and a fresh glimpse into the golden era of hip-hop! His flow is grimy and conscious, could he be Hip-Hop’s newest rising son from the south? Houston-based independent artist Bishop3rd000 is checking back in with Houston Style to bring us his highly anticipated freshman album, Marsviewston. We had a chance to interview the Texas terrestrial-funksta’ back in August for the 2015 MCE Summer Fest. 3rd’s stage presence and bars could be industry changing. Bishop3rd000 hails from East Texas, where the historical sounds of Blues and Ragtime were well-defined and the birthplace of Boogie Woogie in the early 20th century. Growing up, the lyrical MC developed a versatile ear from being surrounded by the sounds of Parliament Funkadelic, Roy Ayers, Michael Jackson to Jodeci, but it was the raw and edgy sound of hip-hop that reeled young Bishop into the game of bars. Although Bishop was exposed to drugs, guns, violence, and prostitution living on the east side of Longview, TX, his parents gave him an essential upbringing. His father expanded his mind with a PanAfrican centered education and a profound knowledge of self. His parents helped create a Pan-African organization in Longview that assisted with historical preservation and self-awareness to neighborhoods in the city that were ignored by city officials. It was Pro

His father also exposed him to comic books and anime so these elements combined with his love of music helped mold Bishop3rd000 into the artist he is today. While other kids his age were heavy into southern acts as UGK, Screwed Up Click and No Limit, Bishop was more drawn to artist outside of his region from the likes of east coast and west coast artist. If you were to compare him to someone in the industry to date, it would be Tech N9NE meets Ice Cube mixed with some DMX but uniquely Bishop3rd000. Bishop’s first official single off Marviewston, “Mama Say” is produced by Chicago-native ZenZan Beats. Aside from his single, one of my favorite spins is “Trillexas” featuring another Houston-based MC name Will Nova and produced by a dope Canadian beat-maker by the name of Josh Grant. Bishop shared his enlightenment on music, “Great music is emotions and substance in perfect rhythmic form, your voice is an instrument and when it blends perfectly with the beat, it is an unstoppable force.” The video for Bishop3rd000’s single “Mama Say” will drop within the next 2-3 weeks-- stay tuned to YouTube. hough a majority of the headlines in regards to Gulf Coast tourism went towards New Orleans post 2005, Biloxi, Mississippi has made a strong recovery of its own. Known for its historical landmarks, sandy beaches and more than a few tie-ins to the history of rock & roll, Biloxi has a charm that need be discussed. Many know Biloxi as a key artery of the Gulf Coast seafood business. Trust, it goes well beyond Bubba Gump Shrimp. A town with fascinating casinos, each with their own little niches, Biloxi is finding itself a far easier destination to reach thanks to United offering direct flights to the city. A relaxing area for those who find being on the water calming, Biloxi can offer a few dips into the wild side, especially for the rock star in you. My particular stay in Biloxi not only involved some fun time at the Hard Rock but inside their hotel room where words like plush and luxurious serve little favor towards. The platinum tower room experience came with a double queen bed, cushy bathrobes, and an Oceanside view from both the bedroom and the bathroom that made me feel as if I were on a scenic cruise on the Gulf. I promise, the view is sure to make your rain shower experience a majestic one. The customization that the Hard Rock offers is top notch, literally building your stay around your preferences via The Sound of Your Stay program. And just to top it all off, you can even get your own guitar and amp to truly party like the rock star that you are! After your rock session, head on over to Boogie Nights to dance the night away to some 70’s and 80’s disco music. Come on, unleash your inner Saturday Night Fever. magine one day deciding to become an entrepreneur and growing your business to a successful multimillion dollar company in China. You think, “If I am a success here, I can be a success in another country.” So you set up shop in America but you find that you are not having the same success. Why? You determine that it’s because of a cultural barrier of business not being handled the same in both countries. Now that you know the problem, where do you go for a solution? Austin Zhao, chair of the Asian Chamber of Commerce knows the dilemmas of growing your business in another country. Six years ag,o he decided to expand his already successful China-based business in America. But just like the foreign languages, everything in business didn’t translate the same. The way business plans were done was different. Banking was done differently. Overall business operations were just done in a way not familiar to him. Through a lot of pain and struggle though, Zhao was able to make the transition and now has a multimillion company in America too. Zhao along with Bin Zin, another bi-country businessman, wanted business interactions to be easier for other immigrant business people coming behind them. Putting their heads together with Linda Toyota, president of the Asian Chamber of Commerce and other board members they decided to approach the world’s leader in small business banking, Wells Fargo, with a unique idea. The Asian Chamber of Commerce wanted to develop a program to help business men and women from China successfully transition into doing business

Unleash Your Inner Rock Star at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Biloxi ing lady luck at the casino, to fine dining, late night music entertainment, or perhaps a relaxing day at the spa on site at the hotel and for any lady really wanting to relax, hitting the spa to pregame before your night is a necessity. Biloxi may be underrated as a tourist destination but it’s a gem that shouldn’t be ignored when traveling the Gulf Coast. And for your maximum enjoyment, a stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino should definitely be on your radar. Recommendation: night of dancing the night away or merely want no one intruding in on your early morning rest, you can have your room blacked out with the shades offering as much comfort as possible. While Biloxi offers a vast array of food choices and options, my stay involved heading to the Half Shell Oyster House located inside the Hard Rock Hotel. Order the oyster sampler, you won’t be disappointed! For you steak connoisseurs, there is also a Ruth Chris’ on site. Yes, it does happen to be a franchise and you can go to any major metropolitan area to have it; however, things are just a bit different down in Biloxi. Southern charm trumps all others. There are also a variety of cafes that are sure to satisfy your taste buds however, don’t check out without having a couple of appetizers and drinks at the Hard Rock Café. My table had me seated right in front of some Madonna memorabilia and I happen to be Madonna’s biggest fan. No really, I am. Seriously. If the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino sounds like a couple’s weekend getaway or something for a single person to enjoy, that’s because it is. From try-

After a cocktail or two, step outside and make sure to catch the sunset. Head back to your room, put on those dancing shoes and head on over to Boogie Nights. Back to room to enjoy your turndown service and get a good night’s rest. Sleep in, order room service and then head downstairs for some fun in the sun whether it be via pool or hottub. Wells Fargo Partners with Asian Chamber for Unique Program in Entrepreneurship in America and specifically, in Houston. Since the program would be taught in immigrants’ native tongue and by those who could share personal testimonies of their business dealing, it is very unique. “We looked at who would be the right fit in terms of relationships, meaningfulness and understanding the immigrant population--especially people coming from China and from Thailand, and from Taiwan. We approached Wells Fargo because of the company’s long history of supporting small business owners and diverse small businesses owners in particular. They were the perfect partners,” said Toyota. The 10-week program is a first-of-its-kind with classes that are held in the evenings for three hours at Houston Community College and is taught entirely in Mandarin. According to the Chamber, the course will provide the tools and knowledge to develop a business plan, a finance plan, and marketing plan and understand basic labor and contract law. Wells Fargo will contribute to the financial class. All participants are those who have been in business for a couple of years and are members of the Chamber or soon-to-be members. Gloria Liu, vice president and principal business relationship manager for Wells Fargo, and Stephane Nguyen, senior business relationship manager for Wells Fargo, know the high demand for this type of class from their many business interactions with immigrants. And they look forward to offering the same type of class in Korean and Vietnamese soon. This partnership between the Asian Chamber of Commerce and Wells Fargo just further solidifies Wells Fargo’s commitment to diversity. As a national,

diversified, community-based financial services company, Wells Fargo has $1.7 trillion in assets. They are true friends to the entrepreneurs everywhere. For more information, visit www.wellsfargo. com or www.asianchamber-hou.org. or www.asianchamber-hou.org.

elements of every claim asserted and should be dismissed.” Other news for Univision is the postponement of their IPO to 2016. Walmart’s Imports From China Cost 400,000 Jobs, Says Study

T

he flood of Chinese imports purchased by Walmart shoppers has cost the U.S. economy about 400,000 jobs since 2001, according to a liberal think tank. The Economic Policy Institute, which has long been a critic of U.S. trade policies with China, says Walmart has been a major factor in the growing trade gap with China. It estimates that Walmart sold at least $49 billion worth of Chinese-made goods between 2001 and 2013, and said that its estimate of 400,000 jobs lost is conservative. Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer and private sector employer, criticized the study’s methodology and conclusions stating that the report was old with “flawed economic analysis.” For more information, visit www.cnn.com.
