COMMENTARY

National Writer

s we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, memories of his last birthday flood my mind. He rose early and came to work. He was convening leaders from across regions and races -- blacks, Latinos, Native Americans, faith leaders, lawyers, organizers. He hoped to enlist them in planning a “Poor People’s Campaign,” a march on Washington to demand jobs and justice. Dr. King’s perspective was clear. The civil rights movement had made great progress -- ended legal segregation, gained the right to vote and demonstrated the humanity of those who were locked out. But those victories were limited in effect. Our communities were still divided on the ground. The right to vote had to be exercised

POLITICAL By

Best Way to Honor MLK Is to Follow His Example over continued obstacles. Poverty was robbing children of their potential, yet the Vietnam War abroad was consuming the attention and resources desperately needed at home. Our cities were ready to blow. America was still two nations, separate and unequal. It was time to come together. It was time to march again. Today, Dr. King would surely be of the same mind. Our cities have become traps for the impoverished, with guns and drugs coming in and jobs gong out. What were slums then have become abandoned zones, with public housing torn down and private housing foreclosed. The poor are ever more isolated. They struggle with only the harsh choices of poverty. Can they afford to get to where a job might be? Do they pay for the medicine they need or for food for their children? How can they keep their children safe when they have to work two jobs to keep a roof over their heads? They have no margin. One thing goes wrong -- a job lost, a car breaks down, a child gets in trouble, a mother gets sick -- and what little stability they have managed to create is destroyed. White, black, brown -- no wonder drug and alcohol take a harsh toll amid these pressures.

In his State of the Union, President Obama stated correctly that the United States has the most powerful military in the world, spending as much on it as the next eight nations put together. Dr. King would not have thought this was something to brag about. Dr. King was suspicious of those who talked peace but budgeted for war. Poverty, he would argue, is a weapon of mass destruction that must be disarmed. He would surely have warned that we have plans to rebuild countries across the world, but there is no plan to rebuild our own cities. House speaker Paul Ryan convened Republicans to talk about poverty, but Republican governors (with some exceptions) still refuse to extend Medicaid to millions of working poor people that Washington would pay for. America leads the world in the number of its citizens it locks up. Dr. King would not have thought this something to brag about. Now cost pressures are leading politicians to consider ending our obscene sentencing practices and reducing our prison populations. Yet there is no plan for re-entry of those who were locked up. Locking them up for nonviolent offenses was perverse.

Releasing them without a plan for re-entry, a hope for a job, is equally perverse. Let us celebrate Dr. King by following his example. He called us to act, to make our voices known, to vote in large numbers. Violence is not the answer. Despair leads only to defeat. He called on us to stand up, to lead, to march, to demand change. We are judged, he reminded us, not by our rhetoric but by how we treat the least of these. Actions, not words, provide the measure. You can write to the Rev. Missouri City Mayor Owen Files for May 7th Re-election

Burt Levine, Political Writer

M

issouri City Mayor Allen Owen has filed for re-election on the May 7th ballot in his city. He’s proud of the city he and his wife have called home for nearly 40 years. He is also proud of the work that he has done to make it one of the best cities in the state and for the region for families of all ages from every race, retirees and growing businesses. “I take great pride in the work I’ve done with all our elected representatives in this region to build a better city including US Rep. Al Green and State Rep. Ron Reynolds. I’ve dedicated my life as a committed husband, father, business leader, business builder and civic volunteer to make Missouri City the best city and one of the most diverse cities when measured by every metric,” Owen said after turning in his filing forms. “After retiring recently from banking, I’ve become increasingly involved in improving the quality of life in the city. In recent years, we’ve worked hard with our City Council, its economic development team and local business community to attract more than over $500,000,000 in new businesses leading to hundreds of new jobs and

to Missouri City being voted as one of two Texas cities of the top 50 cities in the USA to live in,” he said. According to Forbes Magazine, Missouri City continues to be one of America’s safest, most affordable and best quality of life places to raise a family, build a business, live and retire. With a population of 42 percent African American or black, 34 percent Caucasian or white, 16 percent Asian and 15 Hispanic or Latina, Missouri City was recognized in a recent Rice University study as “the most ethnically diverse city in the most ethnically diverse region in the country. The city ranked particularly high when it came rankings in home

and business ownership, college and graduate degrees earned and traditional family environments with two parent households. “I’m particularly proud of our continuing push by City Council to improve public safety. We recently opened Fire Station Number 5, are working to build Fire Station 6 and approved pay raises for Police and Fire Forces and all city workers. We’ve hired five new Motorcycle Police Officers.” Owen also added, “In spite of struggling economic conditions in other areas, Missouri City home values have jumped 14 percent and remain one of the best buys in the area, because of

our proximity to Houston, the Texas Medical Center, Energy Corridor and the Port of Houston.” Allen and Jane Owen are members of First United Methodist Church where they raised their children including a daughter who serves as a local teacher. They are grateful Missouri City remains where their children and grandchildren want to visit. Owen earned degrees from Stephen F. Austin and the Southern Methodist University – Graduate School of Finance and Banking. Owen serves on many boards, committees and civic organizations across Missouri City. “Engagement is critical to me. We’re excited about HCC building at Texas Parkway adjacent to City Hall with a $35 million investment to boost growth there as a welcome to our City. Our library is growing. Work continues for Metro getting commuter rail to our City along 90 and soon a bus network to move our citizens to and from work and school.” Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Brings Art, Beats and Lyrics to Houston

By Erica Ponder, Entertainment Writer

Twista

hen art and hip-hop combine, something truly sensational takes place. The Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey brand brought Houston a night of live music, art, entertainment and delicious Jack Daniels-inspired cocktails with their Art, Beats and Lyrics show. Famous urban artists were able to showcase their art through an extraordinary exhibit that captivated several viewers of the night. The multi-city tour has been traveling for 11 years, and has grown to be one of the most sought after “lifestyle events” throughout the country.

6

Jan 14 - Jan 20, 2016

This event featured artists Dubelyoo and Houston native Zach Murray, among many others. Dubelyoo, the co-creative mind behind the showcase, has been featured in multiple publications and said that this was “not your typical mainstream art show.” He describes his art as having urban aesthetics. His art is very heavily inspired by boxing legends like Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. After moving to Atlanta in 2000, he got the ball rolling and made a name for himself by doing art for magazines. The show has definitely boosted the popularity of his art by being able to take his art across the country many times. Dubelyoo sees the tour not only expanding on a national level, but internationally as well. He feels that the Jack Daniels brand has definitely increased the featured artists’ platform. “We have the opportunity to go places on tour, and a lot of people don’t get that opportunity,” he said. They were

able to sell out a federal building in D.C., and have a show coming up in Birmingham. Tattoo artist and beatboxer Zach Murray has been immersed in art since he was in elementary school. After really developing his skills in high school, he went to art school in hopes of further developing his technique, but realized that he grasped the material his professors tried to teach him. After going his own way, he became a freelance artist and pursued tattooing, which is something that he does today. According to Zach, in 2011, he connected with Dubelyoo through DJ Lord and has since showcased art of Hip-Hop icons such as Lauryn Hill and Slick Rick. Due to the election year, in 2012, he delivered art that was politically inspired, giving a twist by making Barack Obama and Mitt Romney into zombies. This year the Game of Thrones inspired his art. “I love Scifi and fantasy, and I wanted some subject matter that I knew everyone would attach to, because it’s [The Game of Thrones] huge in pop culture right now.” He loves creating art that embodies photorealism elements. The show has definitely helped Murray in several ways, including networking and traveling. He revealed, “the same way I don’t like to be in a bubble, I don’t like to be in just one town… I want my work to spread the world.” This year, the Hip-Hop performing artist was Chi-Town’s very own Twista, along with other creative and crowd-engaging amateur artists. BOOK REVIEW

Best Friends Forever

ou’d do almost anything for your best friend. You’d take a bullet, take her in, or take her anywhere she needed to go. You keep her kids and her confidences. And, as in the new novel, “Best Friends Forever” by Kimberla Lawson Roby, she’d do the same for you. Probably. Celine Richardson was absolutely furious at her husband, Keith. It was bad enough that he came home at 5 a.m., but lying about where he’d been was the last straw. It was obvious that Keith was cheating on Celine – but what Celine couldn’t figure out was why. He claimed that she acted like she never had time for him, and Celine had to admit that she’d been awfully busy for the last few months. Building her business took a lot of her time, but didn’t they have date nights? Sure, she’d been preoccupied now and then, but when they sent their ten-year-old daughter, Kassie, to spend the weekend with Celine’s best friend, Lauren, didn’t Celine and Keith spend alone-time together? They did, but that wasn’t good enough for him. He was cheating on Celine with some tramp, but he wouldn’t come out and admit it. And yet – that wasn’t the worst thing in Celine’s life. Just a few days before Keith’s first lie, she found a lump in her breast and, after rounds of doctor visits and too many tests, her worst fears were confirmed. It was malignant, but Keith was full of excuses why he couldn’t accompany her to the hospital and Celine knew instantly that she could never again rely on her husband for support. Still, she wasn’t alone. With the help of her best friend and her brother - and no thanks to her no-good, absent husband - she’d be just fine.

But Keith wasn’t done, and neither was cancer. Celine’s recovery didn’t go well, and her soon-to-be-ex had a bombshell to share, one that she sensed wasn’t the whole story. And just when Celine thought she couldn’t take any more, Lauren spoke her mind… Friendship, as you know, is never one-sided. It’s a give-and-take, and that includes “Best Friends Forever.” From the very first scene in which a delicious scandal erupts, author Kimberla Lawson Roby gives her fans a story that’s sordid and scary but also, in an odd way, spiritually uplifting. Roby’s Celine is a strong, God-loving woman who’s totally out of patience, but I enjoyed that she’s given a lifeline as well as two surprises, one right after the other. While that ultimately leads to what I felt was an abrupt ending that left me hanging, it also gave me hope that we haven’t heard the last of these characters. And the takeaway? I liked it, and I think you will, too: readers get a great girlfriends novel that’s easy to read, super-quick to finish, and that can happily be passed around or recommended for a book group. If that sounds like a dream read for you, then get “Best Friends Forever.” It could be a book you’ll do anything for. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

The Oscars Controversy and Truths

By Susie Stillwell, Entertainment Writer

L

et’s just tell this from the beginning. While on the set of Fresh Prince of BelAir shooting the episode when Jazzy Jeff gets married, I am a witness as I played one of the bridesmaids in the wedding. Others and I are witnesses to Janet Hubert (the first Aunt Viv) saying and I quote, “Who is this young ghetto kid starring? This Will Smith. I should be the star of this show.” She was overheard by Will Smith, the star of the show, and three of the producers and was fired on the spot. Why isn’t she telling that? Why isn’t she telling the real reason behind her rant? Why is it always the ugly ones that have a problem? And believe me this one is arrogant and ugly inside & out and you see the out. The show was named Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, not some old jealous envious broad from the hood. Ever since she was fired from the production she has had it in for Smith and so what does she do? She attacks Jada Pinkett Smith to get free publicity and because Smith will not give her the time of day. I am sure Smith will take the high road and ignore this has been. So, here’s Hubert’s take. Read it and get a good laugh now knowing where this is stemming from. Hubert posted a video on Martin Luther King Jr. Day addressing the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and Pinkett Smith’s public decision to boycott the show. Hubert is the latest person to speak out about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, but she is aiming

her thoughts at two people in particular: Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith. For the second consecutive year, no black actors were nominated in any of the four acting categories — Smith was snubbed for his lead role in “Concussion.” “The Academy has the right to acknowledge whomever they choose, to invite whomever they choose, and now I think that it’s our responsibility, now, to make the change,” Pinkett Smith said in her video. “Maybe it is time that we pull back our resources and we put them back into our communities and our programs and we make programs for ourselves that acknowledge us in ways that we see fit, that are just as good as the so-called ‘mainstream’ ones.” Hubert responded by opening her video with a reference to Pinkett Smith as “Miss Thing” and with

www.StyleMagazine.com

a question “Does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak?” before launching into her thoughts on the controversy that has drawn so much attention (it even prompted the Academy to release a rare statement on Monday.) “I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living and has made millions and millions of dollars from the very people that you’re talking about boycotting just because you didn’t get a nomination, just because you didn’t win?” said Hubert. “That’s not the way life works, baby.” She continued, “You ain’t Barack and Michelle Obama. And y’all need to get over yourselves. You have a huge production company that you only produce your friends and family and yourself. So you are a part of Hollywood, you are part of the system that is unfair to other actors. So get real.” For the full story www.stylemagazine.com. *Comments are of the writer’s opinion and not of Houston Style Magazine.

FEATURE

Houston’s Rising Star Coline Creuzot

By Keandra Scott, Feature Writer

Could Coline Creuzot be the next R&B rising icon out of Houston, TX making an impact in music entertainment?

H

ouston-native and Sony ATV songwriter Coline Creuzot is not just another darling face with a mic in her hand. She has the voice, flare and flavor galore to rock the charts with her hit single, “Truth Is.” We covered the singersongwriter’s Creuz Control EP back in 2014 and as we fast-forward to 2016, Creuzot wanted to check back in with the home team for her latest happenings. After establishing the breath-taking similarities between Creuzot and Aaliyah, we uncovered she is the granddaughter of Percy “Frenchy” Creuzot, Jr. the owner/ operator of Houston’s famous Frenchy’s Chicken. The grind has always been in Creuzot’s bloodline. She comes from a musical family and is surrounded by one of the most influential families in music entertainment, The Knowles. The R&B singer spoke on her experience singing background with Solange and appearing in the “I Decided” video. “Solange is one of my childhood friends...” as Creuzot continued to open up about how one of Solange’s background singers got hurt and she was on hand in Los Angeles to help out. “It was all love there,” Creuzot stated. Speaking of L.A., after signing a deal with EMI, which is now Sony ATV, the multitalented soul made the move from Houston to LA; she has been residing there for 3 years now. While Creuzot is in the booth, or putting up the easel to create some flawless symmetrical or abstract artwork, finding balance with her 9-month-old daughter and husband becomes a task. The mommy and wife mentioned, “You know, it’s a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it. She continued, “Teamwork makes the dream work, we just figure it out. We don’t sleep much but we work it out (haha).” As the interview progressed, Creuzot shared her inspiration for her single, “Truth Is” produced by Houston’s own multi-platinum composer/producer and Grammy 10

Award-winning Happy Perez (who also worked with Miguel, Frank Ocean, and Mary J Blige) “It was one of those moments,” she explained as she described how she wanted to be abrasive yet deliver the track nice and sweet. “I like to be a voice for women or people who need that extra boost of confidence or need to feel good,” said Creuzot. Although the dynamic singer-songwriter has worked with some of Houston’s top talent such as Paul Wall, Slim

Thug and even basketball star turned rapper Booby Gibson, she has future aspirations to work with neo-soul icon Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, The Dream, Ne-Yo and Timberland. BUSINESS

S

So You Want To Be An Entrepreneur in 2016? Get Tips to Get Started From Wells Fargo

tarting a business takes more than a great idea – it takes time, commitment, and en-

ergy. Consider your personal life Before you get started, ask yourself several questions, including why you want to start a business and how it may affect you and your loved ones, especially if your family will be involved. It also helps to look at your past experience: Are there any skill gaps you need to fill before you begin running a business? Also, make sure you have a support system in place: advisors, an attorney, an accountant, and a good relationship with your bank can be helpful when establishing a business. Figure out the basics Crossing these steps off your business startup checklist will put you one step closer to turning your idea into a reality: • N a m e a n d t y p e o f l o c a tion: Choose a name that’s available, and decide if you want to

conduct business in a physical or virtual space. Also, think about any permits you may need or any copyrights you may have to work around. • Products and services: Consider how will you price your product or service. While your product may be unique, researching similar products and services already on the market will help. • Competition: Evaluate your competitors and their customers. Knowing the competitive marketplace can help refine your business strategy. • Marketing: Determine how you’ll reach potential customers and market your products . Consider the value of creating an online presence like a website or social media profile. Next, begin working on a business plan – it will help you estimate the cost of starting your business and do financial projections. Also, research as many sources of startup funding as possible and

choose the ones that fit your financial needs and circumstances. Analyze your finances Taking a close look at your financial situation before you start a business is crucial to long-term success. You’ll also need your financial information to be clear and concise when talking to potential lenders and investors. Order a copy of your personal credit report and score to see what potential lenders will see. It’s also a good idea to determine exactly how much credit your business will need and what those funds will be used for. And, above all, get a clear sense of whether you can afford to quit your current job or reduce your hours, and if you have enough

money to live on for a few months after starting the business. If you begin the startup process by addressing some of these key points, you’ll make a smooth transition into your new role as a business owner, and you’ll ensure long-term success for your business in the future. 4 Nutritious Reasons to Drink Chocolate Milk Courtesy of Family Features

C

hocolate milk is more than just a sweet treat. The drink you enjoyed as a kid actually has many nutritious benefits, in addition to its delicious, chocolatey taste. It’s a Nutrient Powerhouse Nutrition experts recommend adults consume three servings of milk and milk products a day, as milk is one of the top sources for three key nutrients – calcium, vitamin D and potassium. And like regular milk, chocolate milk provides eight essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D and potassium, as well as protein, vitamins A and B12, riboflavin and phosphorus. It Ups the Calcium Ante According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 50 percent of boys ages 9-13, girls ages 9-18, women over 50 and men over 70 are failing to meet their daily calcium requirements from diet alone. “Calcium is one of the most important minerals for the human body,” said Katherine Brooking, MS, RD, Appetite for Health. “Not only is calcium essential for building strong, healthy bones, it also helps muscles, nerves and hormones function optimally.” Made with 50 percent more calcium per serving than regular low-fat white milk, TruMoo Calcium Plus low-fat chocolate milk is the perfect way to introduce more calcium into your diet. With no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial growth hormones and no artificial sweeteners, you can feel great about enjoying it on its own or using it as a base in delicious smoothies, such as the Fuel Up Smoothie and Chocolate Berry Blast Smoothie. It Helps Build Bone Mass Bones grow throughout childhood and adolescence, with peak bone mass occurring around age 30. The more bone you have at the time of peak bone mass, the less likely you are to break a bone or develop osteoporosis later in life. Meeting daily calcium and vitamin D needs by consuming foods rich in calcium, such as low-fat chocolate milk, or other low-fat dairy products like yogurt and fortified cereal, can help build strong, healthy bones and, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. It’s a Great Workout Recovery Drink Recent studies have shown that, compared to juice, water or some sports drinks, low-fat chocolate milk’s unique blend of carbohydrate and protein is ideal for replenishing tired muscles. Its high water content replaces fluids and electrolytes that are lost during exercise. Unlike water or most sports drinks, low-fat chocolate milk, such as TruMoo Calcium Plus, packs the additional benefit of calcium and includes a great balance of sodium and sugar – which may help you stay hydrated longer and regain energy. New App Uses Celebrity Masks To Create Unique Experience

Cecilia Smith, Special to Style

W

atch out, there’s a new app in town. Though platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram still stand tall as industry leaders; others like Snapchat and Periscope are proving that there’s always room for a worthy competitor. Enter Dynamite, a new

application determined to find it’s own footing in the Social Media industry by providing a twist on the typical sharing experience. The premise is simple: 42 second videos that can be edited together as you please. The twist? A series of “masks” that allow users to

TECHNOLOGY

High-Tech Clothing Helps Overcome High Stress

thletic styling continues to increase its influence on casual clothing – often referred to as “athleisure” apparel – with innovative fabric treatments associated with high-performance activewear making their way into basic apparel; even underwear. Temperature-control and wicking technology that draws moisture away from skin, initially developed to keep athletes dryer and more comfortable while training and competing, can now be found in items we wear every day, including T-shirts, underwear and socks. “Comfort is the biggest factor when choosing basic clothing, so it’s little surprise the technology that makes high-performance sportswear so appealing to athletes is being well received in casual, everyday apparel,” said Jay Turner, president of underwear, panties and socks at HanesBrands, which has introduced X-Temp, a dynamic temperature control and cooling technology, to its product lineup. “There is no such thing as too much comfort in underwear.” After all, the gym is hardly the only place where temperatures rise and perspiration follows. Sometimes life sets the thermostat to “really uncomfortable,” especially with normal workday pressures. From interviewing for a new job, making a big presentation or dealing with a demanding boss, there are countless scenarios in the workplace that call for keeping your cool.

Fit meets function Athletic apparel was once only worn for specific athletic activities, but now demand has inspired manufacturers to deliver the same style and comfort in more affordable, everyday apparel. One of the key components of comfort is temperature regulation, and a hightech Swiss company, HeiQ, developed the Adaptive technology that actually responds to body temperature changes by turning moisture wicking on or off, much like the skin does naturally. You want more evaporation to keep you feeling cooler when the body is warmer and less evaporation when you are chilled. Top brands are now incorporating this technology into their collections. For example, Champion PowerTrain T-shirts, hoodies and training pants (look for “Vapor” on the label) are made from virtually weightless fast-drying fabric that wicks moisture for sweat-free comfort, no matter what else you’re wearing and what you’re doing. Underneath it all When things heat up, keeping your cool depends on that first layer of fabric against your skin. That’s why it’s important to choose undergarments designed to respond to your body temperature. By incorporating the same cooling technology used in active apparel, Hanes has introduced X-Temp undershirts, socks and men’s and women’s underwear that wick moisture away from consumers when warm. Soon you will even be able to

A

transform into virtually anyone they please, from activists like Martin Luther King Jr. to even Donald Trump. (This mask is particularly entertaining I must admit.) The masks themselves serve as an added bonus, allowing users to use their imagination to create skits, segments and more. Those that are

quick with memes should be especially pleased. According to developers, “Dynamite! lets you create 42 second videos edited together from segments you record. Each segment can have a different video face mask and/or audio filter. So be yourself, or wear a mask, it’s a totally new way to create personal videos and share them with your friends, or the world. Telling your story is more fun, and more engaging than ever before.” They add, “Be fearless. Share everything. Short videos. Personal stories. No fear --- with hundreds of masks and filters!” As the new kid on the block it remains to be seen whether it will take sail or not, but for now those behind the brand are showing no signs of slowing down. Those looking for variety will enjoy the constant updates, as everyone from Kim Kardashian to sister Kylie Jenner becomes available via a new mask. Hit or miss? Check it out www.dynamiteapp.com and let us know what you think.

find bras that incorporate the technology. “Technology continues to migrate from athletic wear to underwear as part of the athleisure trend,” Turner said. “For consumers, comfort is 24-7 and knows no boundaries.” To learn more about comfortable, casual clothing with the technology to meet your lifestyle needs, visit hanes.com. How it Works Fabrics that adapt to the body’s temperature to speed or slow down cooling for all-day comfort may seem a little sci-fi. Actually, it’s what happens when technology meets textile to pair the high-performance qualities desired in athletic wear with the unmatched comfort of soft cotton. Swiss company HeiQ developed a hydro functional polymer that makes fabric dynamic, enabling it to respond to body temperature and deliver both wicking and evaporation benefits. This technology turns moisture into vapor to move it away from the body, which is wicking, and it also expands the fabric’s absorbency area, so more evaporation can take place. Simply stated, as the skin temperature increases and perspiration occurs, the fabric fibers, even cotton, respond by allowing evaporation to help keep the body cool and wicking to help keep it dry.

When you’re comfortable, you’re better prepared to handle whatever life throws your way. Stay cool when things get sticky with these tips from the experts at Hanes: · Find clothes that let you feel confident. From the style to the fit, if you’re not comfortable, it will show. Look for attire that lets you downplay any sign you’re not on top of your game, such as moisture-wicking garments that keep stickiness and sweat at bay. · Take control of your temperature by wearing layers. If things heat up, you can discard a layer to quickly adjust your personal comfort. · Buy the right size. Clothing that doesn’t fit properly tends to cling, making you more prone to sweat and discomfort. · To look good, you need to feel good. Avoid rough, scratchy materials that will irritate your skin and opt instead for soft cotton blends. For more information, visit www.hanes.com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images
