tate Rep. Scott Turner earned endorsements of the Harris County Republican Party this month and the Dallas County Republican Party last month in his rebel fight for what is expected January 13th, the opening of the next Texas Legislature, to become the first challenge against an incumbent House speaker in 40 years. He is running to become Texas’ first African American House Speaker. Turner, a former NFL Football Star, has always been fast.Establishment Republicans are telling him to sit down but since high school and college, he’s never been known for easily sitting down. Instead he’s been known for his fast feet and forceful personality, traits that led to an eight-season career with the Redskins, Chargers and Broncos in the NFL despite establishment types then telling him he was too small. Today he’s told his chances are too small and he should sit down to surrender to status quo but he won’t do that. “The Lord gave me a great gift to run,” Turner said with a smile during a recent interview. Since a 2004 injury forced him to quit football he’s focused instead on long shot throws in Texas politics against long shot odds. Turner, 42, keeps picking fights others told him to avoid and sprints in the rockiest roads for what he

Keep On Marching one-half hours, the time Michael Brown was left on the street in Ferguson. This weekend, tens of thousands marched in Washington, Boston, New York and elsewhere. Why march? Marching is a public protest, a witness demanding attention be paid. Marching is a public classroom, teaching millions about what has long been true about police violence and racial injustice, but too seldom acknowledged. Marching forges community, an evolving community of ordinary heroes who put their bodies on the line to call the powerful to account. Marching involves moving from spectator to participant in history, going from being on the sidelines to being on the field. It is exhilarating and frustrating at the same time. These marches are spreading, in part because many share Eric Garner’s final plea, “I can’t breathe.” African American outrage is clear. We experience police abuse as a daily reality. African American males are 21 times more likely to be shot by police than white males. To even out the disparity over the last three years, according to Propublica, police would have to shoot an additional white male a week -- for three years. But this isn’t just a black male problem. According to Propublica, 44 percent of those shot and killed by police are white. And even this data is
incomplete, since many police departments do not file fatal police shooting reports at all. These marches reflect the reality that many can’t breathe in this current arrangement. The unjust judicial system reflects an unjust economic order. The day after the first Garner demonstrations that shut down much of New York City, low wage workers walked off their jobs in over 190 cities. They came from McDonald’s and Wal-Mart, Dollar Stores and discount chains. They, too, can’t breathe in jobs that offer low wages, few benefits and less security. The protests have now gained national attention. The White House has promised reforms in sentencing, in police practices and in police equipment, with millions promised for new cameras. Even conservatives have joined in speaking out against police abuse. This is all good, but merely a first, baby step. We need fundamental reform not simply of police practices, but also of economic and educational policies if we are to meet the challenge exposed
by Ferguson and Florida and New York and more. And all of our history teaches that real reform comes only if the people are in the street demanding it. Those who are comfortable with the current arrangement will not lead the change. Those who can’t breathe must lead the change. And now, they are. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

considers his political principles. Having won his first term to the Texas House in 2012, Turner is now running hard for the powerful speaker’s post against Joe Straus, Texas’ first Jewish House Speaker, with most

grassroots conservatives backing him and most everyone else not including black Democrats. “I believe in Texas and America. We must stand firm for the conservative principles of faith, family and freedom. I have a heart for public service and take every opportunity to be the voice for conservative values, a leader who governs with integrity, transparency and accountability. I conduct myself in the highest ethical manner as legislator. I will do so as speaker,” Turner said. “My pledge is principled leadership for Texas. I’m a forceful advocate for traditional values of faith and family. I’ll always stand for the unborn. Texans must stand against a federal government which threatens our freedoms, liberties and our economy,” he said. Waging a campaign for one of Texas’ top posts was not what Turner thought he’d do while growing up with a single mom but “when I was 10 I told mom I was going to play for the NFL.” He excelled at football at the University of Illinois, where he studied speech. After graduating in 1994, he signed a three-year deal with the Redskins. “One thing you learn from the NFL, is NFL stands for ‘Not For

Long,’” Turner said. “You have to make a decision to have something to fall back on.” Before his football career ended, Turner began exploring politics, he said because of his Christian faith. He has been married 18 years and is raising his nephew. He returned to Texas to run a 2012 campaign for a new House seat. He won the Republican primary and 85 percent of the vote in the general election. In his first session, Turner aligned with the Tea Party and butted heads with Straus. He began considering a bid for speaker then. Texas’ House hasn’t had a contested record vote for speaker since 1975. In every session since, the winner of the race was clear before the vote, prompting all challengers to drop out to avoid forcing supporters to back a losing candidate. Turner has made clear he intends to require the House’s 150 members to cast a record vote on the first day of the session. Turner said he’s an “independent thinker.” He gets angry at the idea others control him. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

he Houston Fire Department accepted a fire prevention grant for $4,744 from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers. The award will be used to assist with fire investigations to help fire investigators more efficiently investigate and determine the cause of a fire with video acquisition field kits. Because fire continues to be the leading cause of property damage worldwide, during the past 35 years FM Global has contributed millions of dollars in fire prevention grants to fire service organizations around the globe. Locally, the company has awarded grants to a number of Texas-based organizations. Through its Fire Prevention Grant Program, FM Global awards grants quarterly to fire departments—as well as national, state, regional, local and community organizations worldwide—that best demonstrate a need for funding, where dollars can have the most demonstrable impact on preventing fire, or mitigating the damage it can quickly cause. HOLIDAY By Family Features
S
Make Holiday Wishes Come True
pread goodwill this season. The holiday season is a magical time and there are some simple ways to share in the season’s spirit of goodwill and generosity. Let this season of giving take on a new form by participating in a simple act of kindness. Whether you want to give back locally or on a larger scale, there is never a shortage of people in need of your compassion. Granting Wishes As part of their annual “Believe” campaign, you can visit your local Macy’s store and drop a stamped letter, addressed to “Santa at the North Pole,” into the special Santa Mail letterbox. Letters to Santa can also be created and sent online at macys.com/believe, making it easier than ever to give back. For each letter collected in-store and online through December 24, the retailer will donate $1, up to $1 million, to Make-A-Wish, helping to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Since the campaign was introduced seven years ago, it has raised more than $8.7 million to benefit the organization. How It Started The campaign was inspired by the true story of 8-yearold Virginia O’Hanlon, who wrote a letter to the New York Sun newspaper in 1897 asking if there really was a Santa Claus. The paper editor, Francis P. Church, responded, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion
exist …” These words became the most reprinted editorial ever to run in any newspaper in the English language. The touching story created generations of believers and provided inspiration for the “Yes, Virginia” animated special, available at Macy’s as a DVD and illustrated storybook. In addition to the letter collection drive, you can also give back by purchasing these gifts in stores or online, with 10 percent of the purchase price going to Make-A-Wish. The Power of a Wish One of the world’s leading children’s charities, MakeA-Wish serves children in every community in the United States and its territories. The organization grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Since its inception in 1980, it has granted more than 254,000 wishes. According to a 2011 U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish-come-true can have positive impacts on the health of children. Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illnesses, and their par-
ents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. Generosity Comes in Many Forms There are many ways to embrace the giving spirit of the season. Other ways to take part include helping at a local soup kitchen, “adopting” a family in need or even writing letters of appreciation to mail carriers, servicemen and others who help you throughout the year. For more information about this year’s campaign or to learn more about helping make children’s wishes come true, visit macys.com/believe. For more information, visit www.macys.com/ believe

Is President Obama the Most Successful President of All Time?
President Barack Obama
T
oday news broke that after 56 years of closed relations America and Cuba would once again establish diplomatic relations. The exchanging of prisoners has opened the door for America to have an embassy in Cuba and Cuba to have an embassy in America. What does that mean in simple terms? Americans will soon be able to travel to Cuba without restrictions. It also means trade restrictions are likely to ease after decades of political strife. This was all made possible by one man and one man only, President Barack Obama. Now of course there were dozens if not hundreds of lawyers, legal aides, senators and congressmen involved but in the end it was our President that initiated it and signed off on it. “I promised to re-examine our Cuba policy,” said President Obama in a statement about the Cuba policy changes. And today he delivered on his promise to America once again. Here’s a recap of what President Obama has done while in office. He’s started with a promise to reform health care; something that his predecessors tried but were unsuccessful. Since its inception, his national health care program with Obama Care has been under siege. Not only has the program itself
8
been under fire but the President has also faced threats of impeachment. Even with all that the program has flourished and given millions of Americans health care that didn’t have it before. There have been no new wars started even with terror groups like ISIS on the horizon. Bin Laden was killed and there has not been one terror attack on the scale of 9/11 while President Obama has been in office. All this was done without utilizing torture techniques. Unemployment is the lowest it’s been in a decade and so are gas prices. Student loan forgiveness programs have saved parents and millennia’s millions of dollars and stress. I could write a hundred page essay on the strives President Obama and his administration have made but it’s easier than that. What administration has faced as much opposition as the Obama administration? The president has had ranking Republican House and Senate leaders openly say they would not cooperate with anything until President Obama was out of office and the president was still able to get major things accomplished. President Richard Nixon would have been

impeached had he not resigned. President Ronald Reagan broke unions and put legislation in place that put a generation of African American men in prison or in poverty. President George Bush only got one term and with that one term he started Desert Storm, which had our country in a war with the Middle East. President Bill Clinton is one of the most popular Presidents of all time but his popularity came with the economic booms of technology. President George W. Bush almost brought this country to its knees with one of the greatest economic collapses since the great depression. Now we have President Obama who has no major mistakes on his resume and has preserved in spite of all that was lined up against him. Asking if someone is the greatest President of all time is like asking if Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant are the greatest basketball players of all time. It’s like asking if you want Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. There will never be a consensus but their greatness will never be in doubt. President Obama is a great President and history will be on his side. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

he refined ride quality and quiet cabin in the 2015 Buick Verano start closer to the ground than extensive insulation and a well-tuned chassis. Down where the rubber meets the road, engineers tuned and refined the Verano’s tires for reduced noise and a comfortable ride. “Far from being little more than a chunk of rubber, tires are a complex machines, made up of dozens of components, chemicals and compounds that must perform perfectly to deliver the traction, braking safety, fuel economy, tread life and road manners today’s drivers expect,” said Jim Smith, editor of Tire Review magazine. “The tweaking and tuning that goes on behind the scenes, the heavy lifting by auto and tire engineers working in unison, produces tires that quietly perform flawlessly in the background, and a car that delights owners.” According to Chris Arabian, a tire development engineer within General Motors’ Tire-Wheel Systems group, the process of selecting and refining a tire is a balancing act. “For the Verano, we needed to ensure we provided ride comfort, while also balancing fuel economy and rolling resistance, and delivering an engaging driving experience.” Arabian’s team worked closely with tire manufacturer Continental Tire to develop two distinct tire packages for the Verano. The 17-inch P225/50R17 tire, standard on the base Verano, focuses on delivering low rolling resistance, which helps improve fuel economy. The 18-inch, P235/45R18 tire, which is standard on the Verano Turbo, was designed to provide crisp handling and a sportier feel. Tire tuning isn’t always a straightforward
Buick Verano’s Refined Ride Starts Where the Rubber Meets the Road process – in fact, pursuing one attribute often conflicts with another. For instance, tires with low rolling resistance commonly use rubber compounds that don’t lose much energy as they roll along the road. However, compounds that do the exact opposite also excel at reducing noise and soaking up bumps in the road. But the conflict can be resolved by modifying other elements of the tire. For example: Tuning certain peak frequencies generated by the tire can reduce the chance that vibra2015 Buick Verano tions are amplified throughout the entire car. BOOK REVIEW All I Really Want Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

resents wrapped? Check. Tree decorated – check. Cookies made? Groceries purchased, shopping finished, school programs scheduled, Santa visits done? Check, check and… check. You love the holidays, but there’s no denying that they can be stressful. The last thing you want is to put more on your To-Do List, but when you add “All I Really Want” by Quinn Caldwell, you’ll see things in a more-relaxed way. But first, the disclaimer: Caldwell says that this book isn’t meant to be all hints-and-tips. It won’t help you get organized, simplify, or create the “Best Christmas Ever in five easy steps.” Caldwell says that’s not his job, and it’s not God’s; instead, you’ll find a few complications here, as well as some hope for “a little holy breathing space” – beginning with the first of Advent. Christmas, as you undoubtedly noticed, didn’t start after Thanksgiving: retailers have had their holiday decorations up for months. They couldn’t wait for the season, but it may seem as though wait is all you do lately. There is a virtue in waiting, says Caldwell, and Advent is when to find it. Pause; “be prepared for little bursts of delight.” It takes wide-open eyes to do that, though, and time, which is at a premium these days. Caldwell says that lack of time is exactly when you want to “add a holy something to your to-do list.” Volunteer, make a donation to a charity, visit someone who needs you, be kind to someone. And on that last one – if you “get stuck, look in the mirror.” Go to church; now’s when you need people around you. Let your kids believe in Santa, because he

teaches them about “dwelling in mystery.” Sing with someone, even if you “can’t carry a tune in a bucket.” Keep in mind that, like anybody, God would surely rather that his birthday party is “full of fun.” And yet, if you’re having a bad Christmas, remember that that’s why we have Christmas in the first place. Christmas was “born in defiance of all that stalks the world and tries to snuff its light.” “If the only spirit you can get into is low,” says Caldwell, “you’re just who God is looking for.” Two words: De. Lightful. There’s just no other way to describe “All I Really Want.” And here’s the thing: I didn’t expect to like this book. I figured it was just more guilt-inducing platitudes, more blah-blah-blah-Christmas, but nothing could be further from the truth: it’s joyous! Author Quinn Caldwell uses humor and a bit of irreverence in prodding his readers into slowing down, noticing, seeing God’s gifts in addition to those under the tree. He makes us think about Mary and Joseph. He makes us laugh about God’s “epic party.” Sprinkled with Bible verses, meditations, and tiny prayers that can be recited day and night, I think this is a perfect book for anyone who’s had enough ho-ho-ho and wants to replace it with more ho-hoholy. If that’s you, then “All I Really Want” is a book to check out. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

ith so many holiday dishes requiring timeconsuming special preparation, you may find yourself looking for ways to shave a little time. The key is to buy back precious minutes without sacrificing the taste and quality your loved ones expect when they gather for the big holiday feast. When you’re planning this year’s menu, keep these tips in mind: Build recipes around staples you already have on hand to shave off some grocery shopping time. To create a variety of dishes for any celebration, keep a ready stash of basic items like rice, pasta, potatoes, and an assortment of herbs and spices. Look for ingredients that offer convenience, such as being pre-cooked or pre-measured. For example, Success Boil-in-Bag Rice is a 10-minute quick-cooking long grain rice, which is pre-measured in a convenient colander bag that can be prepared on the stove or in the microwave. Once you have a menu in mind, take inventory of your kitchen tools to ensure you have everything you need and that it’s in good working order. Review your recipes and preparation instructions ahead of time to prevent surprises on the big day, when things are already heating up in the kitchen. Save time slicing, dicing and chopping by using frozen or store-prepared fruits and vegetables. Cutting preparation time will leave you more time to focus on tending to another dish, or take a few minutes for yourself before guests arrive. With a few time-saving measures in place, you’ll be ready to take on preparing a spread so tasty no one will know the shortcuts you took along the way. You’ll also be free to experiment with new recipes, such as this delicious, sweet and crunchy Apple Walnut Dressing.
Add rice, broth and honey; heat thoroughly, stirring constantly.
