his week we celebrate Christmas -- the mass celebrating the birth of Jesus the Christ -- the Messenger. Across a country shaken by terrorism, the stores are festooned with lights, music fills the air and, despite the dismal realities of most, there is talk of good cheer. As I write, the frenzied are rushing to buy presents and the party season is in full swing. The Christmas season is here! All that is missing is the reason for Whom we celebrate the season: Jesus Himself. In truth, Christmas really isn’t about Santa Claus. This is not a mere holiday; it is a Holy day. For far too many, the presence of presents denotes the absence of the gift of Jesus the Christ, “to proclaim good news to the poor ... freedom to the captives
The True Story of Christmas ... sight to the blind ... (and freedom) to the oppressed.” Indeed, far too many of us still refuse to see that He was representative of most of today’s humanity -- despised, denied, damned and dispossessed. Like 71 percent of the world’s population, Jesus was born poor. Like more than 60 million the world over, He, too, was a refugee. Like more than onethird of the world population, His family did not have access to adequate health care. Like more than one billion around the world -- and 500,000 in the United States -- He was a homeless Child whose life was of so little consequence that His mother was forced to give birth to Him in a stable of animals, as there was no room at the stable’s inn. Yet hope was alive, for He came at a time of great expectation among the poor and the oppressed -- just when they needed Him most. The Prophet Isaiah foretold that “to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders” and that this Messiah world bring “good news” to the poor, empowering them to defeat their Roman occupiers and free themselves, saving them from political, religious and social persecution. In this season, before we lock out the Syrians fleeing
murder and violence, we would do well to remember that part of the story, for God stored His precious Son among those just like them. Jesus was a liberator; but he was the Prince of Peace, not a man of war. He gathered disciples; He did not disperse armies. He converted, rather than conquered, His occupier. He accumulated no worldly wealth, yet sought to empower and enrich the most decimated among us. We will be judged, He told us, by how we treat “the least of these.” We will be graded on how we treat the stranger on the Jericho Road. This week, He would expect us not to run up monetary debts, but to build up generosity credits. Let us spend some time this week helping to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to care for the broken-hearted. You don’t need to be a Christian to understand the relevance of this story today. Jesus taught us the overwhelming power of faith, hope and charity, the importance of love, and the obligation to fight for peace and justice. Christmas is the “Poor Peoples’ Holy Day” and should not be co-opted by the rich, the powerful and the greedy as their holiday. This Holy Day belongs to all.
So, let’s make Heaven and Jesus happy this Christmas and face the terrors and tribulations of today’s world together, turning to each in love, not on each other in fear. Merry Christmas, everybody! As 2015 Ends 2016 Election Sparks Catch Fire
wo days after electing Rep. Sylvester Turner as Houston’s second African American Mayor as an end to the 2015 elections, ballots were set for 2016 elections. The field is ripe for elections to result in Dr. Ben Carson as America’s second African American President, Judge Morris Overstreet as Harris County’s first black DA and races that could result in African American wins in plenty of new 2016 positions. Monday, December 14th was the deadline to file for the March 1st Democratic and Republican Primary elections that decide who will appear as party nominees in the November 8th General Election. The deadline to register to vote is February 1st and early voting is February 16th to 28th. Qualifying for the Democratic Primary ballot for President are Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Calvis Hawes, Star Locke, Rocky De La Fuente, Keith Judd, and Willie Wilson. While qualifying for the Republican Primary ballot for President are John Kasich, Lindsey Graham (no longer campaigning), Ted Cruz, Donald J. Trump, Carly Fiorina, Rick Santorum, Carson, Jeb Bush, Ben
Carson, Mike Huckabee, Elizabeth Gray and Rand Paul. Unlike city races, in primaries voters can only vote on one party primary ballot or the other primary ballot. Michael McCaul is running for re-election for Congressional District 10 and so is African American Registered Nurse Tawana Cadien but this time she is challenged in the Democratic Primary by Scott Gallaher. Sheila Jackson Lee is again unchallenged in the Democratic Primary but retired Marine Corp. Master Gunnery Sgt. Reggie Gonzales, African American mediator Lori Bartley, Sharon Fisher and Ava Pate are Republican challengers. Democrat Pat Bryan is challenging Republican Congressman Ted Poe. Republican Pete Olson this fall faces either African American retired US Army Col/attorney Mark Gibson or AR Hassan. Former Sheriff Adrian Garcia, having come in third place for Houston Mayor in November, will in March face 23-year incumbent Gene Green and Dominique Garcia. Republicans in that race are Robert Schafranek and Julio Garza. Dr. Brian Babin is unopposed. James Cargas is unopposed in a third primary and hopes to beat John

Republican Kevin Brady faces primary foes in Andre Dean, Steve Toth and Craig McMichael and Al Green will face Republican Jeff Martin in the fall. Democrats Cody Garrett, former State Rep. Lon Burnam and African American retired teacher Grady Yarbrough are running for Railroad Commissioner as well as Republicans Lance Christian, Doug Jeffrey, Gary Gates, Weston Martinez, John Greytok, Wayne Christian and Ron Hale. Democrat Mike Westergren is running for Texas Supreme Court Place 3 but first incumbent Republican Debra Lehrmann faces Michael Massengale. Democrat Dori Contreras Garza is running for Place 5 but incumbent Paul Green faces Rick Green first and Democrat Savannah Robinson is running for Place 9 but incumbent Eva Guzman will face Joe Pool first. for the Court of Criminal Appeals Place 2. Republicans Steve Smith, Sid Harle, Scott Walker and Brent Webster are running for Court of Criminal Appeals Place 5 but the winner among them will face Democrat Betsy Johnson in the fall. Celebrate This Holiday Season with Hennessy X.O. ‘The Original’
By Style News Wire
K
nown to be the world’s most preferred cognac, why not give the gift of Hennessy this holiday season to help ring in a grand 2016 New Year? Celebrating its 250th anniversary, Hennessy was the first to create an “Extra Old” cognac, inventing the premium X.O. category. Hennessy’s X.O. “The Original, developed in 1870, is a rich and complex style of Cognac. Its intense and deep amber color is a sign of its strength. Its flavors of candied fruit and its subtle and lightly spicy nose create a complete harmony, making a mark of its power, roundness, and a flavor that is perfect for the holidays. To taste, a smooth, full sensation gives a simultaneously powerful and soft tonality with a hint of cocoa and a warm fruity process. X.O. is best enjoyed neat, on ice or with a splash of still or sparkling water. The iconic shape of the Hennessy X.O bottle has remained unchanged since 1947. Encrusted with vine bunches that burst from the glass; its generous edges are slightly extended to emphasize the strength of this exemplary Cognac, which makes for a unique presentation ( and no wrapping required!). You can also engrave the X.O bottle to add a flare of originality for that extra special touch. Hennessy X.O retails for $200 (750 ML) and is sold at fine retailers nationwide. s comedy legend Bill Cosby continues to sink further into the infamy of allegations from 30 or so women who are accusing him of past sexual atrocities, veteran Hollywood talent manager Don Gibble is speaking out. Gibble told Juicy Culture that former model and client Beverly Johnson, who claimed that Cosby allegedly drugged and assaulted her, lied about her meeting with the media tycoon. Johnson, who was the first African-American model to grace the cover of Vogue, recounted her allegedly

Beverly Johnson Lied About Bill Cosby Accusations frightening Cosby encounter in Vanity Fair Magazine, stating that she met Cosby at his brownstone in New York City after landing a gig on his highly rated “The Cosby Show.” After chatting a bit with the magazine, Johnson claimed Cosby offered her a cappuccino that was spiked, and after she called Cosby everything but a child of God, he allegedly picked her up, drugged her outside, and flung her in to a cab. According to Johnson, she only came forward because she wanted to encourage other victims to come forward and to tell their stories. Gibble, who reportedly goes back 20-something years with the striking beauty, claims that he heard the famous Cosby meeting story told several times over by Johnson and not once did she ever mention how Cosby had ever tried to drug her. As a matter of fact, Gibble contends Johnson told him that Camille, Cosby’s wife of 50-plus years, was present at the non-eventful brunch meeting. “She said she had brunch with him and his wife, and it was a great experience. And then on ‘The View,’ it flip-flopped,” Gibble said, referring to Johnson’s appearance on the popular ABC-TV daytime

chat fest. “It was odd to me that she changed her story. She said [she was] drugged and raped. I just remember that was not the conversation we had. And we had it repeatedly. It was brunch. It was just one time. It was a typical nice pleasant experience. It can be easily proven that Camille Cosby was at that brunch, so it was kind of dumb for her to lie.” Johnson also told her former manager that she and Cosby would only run into each other at functions. According to Gibble, Johnson even listed Cosby as one of the Hollywood producers that she had a good relationship with and hoped to work with again. “Basically, she only had a good experience with him, so if he had been producing something at that time, I could have easily called that office and gotten her an appointment.” A n d t h e t r u t h i s c o m i n g o u t . It is this reporter’s contention that this was all a set up by Donald Trump because Bill Cosby expressed interest in buying NBC with his own money. No need to use a bank. NBC has always been a Trump interest from his father’s early investments in media. ***Opinions mention in this story are of the reporter’s opinion and do not reflect that of Houston Style Magazine.

the pleasure sensors to release dopamine. Dopamine makes you want to eat more, even when you are not hungry. When you consume too much added sugar, your liver has to work extra hard to process it. Excess sugar in the liver often turns into fat, which can lead to liver damage or other health concerns, such as high cholesterol, diabetes or heart disease.
Y
ou probably realize that eating too many sugary foods and gaining weight go hand in hand. What you may not know is that aside from loading up on calories that help pack on the pounds, consuming too much sugar can also harm your health in other ways. Consuming more than nine teaspoons of sugar a day for men and six teaspoons for women can lead to health problems, such as tooth decay, obesity and depression. Reducing your sugar intake can help more than your waistline; it can improve your overall health. First, it’s important to recognize that there are two types of sugar – natural sugar and added sugar. Natural sugar is found in fruits, milk and some whole grains. Added sugar is sugar that is added to processed foods and drinks, such as cookies, cereals and soda. Added sugar affects your body in many ways. It can be as addictive as drugs, tobacco or alcohol because it affects the same regions of the brain, triggering
It can also overload and damage your pancreas, which controls the blood sugar called insulin that powers your muscles and organs. Lack of insulin can cause muscle and nerve damage. Limit added sugars in your diet with these healthy alternatives: Skip sugary cereals at breakfast. Instead, opt for a protein-rich meal. Options, such as eggs, turkey sausage and whole-wheat toast with peanut butter are healthier ways to fuel your day. Bring healthy snacks to work to ward off the temptation of sugary treats. Some smart choices include: frozen grapes, trail mix, yogurt, almonds, apple slices and peanut butter with celery sticks. Instead of pie, donuts or cake, curb your sweet tooth craving by reaching for fresh fruit, low-fat frozen yogurt or a fruit and yogurt parfait. If you can’t substitute a fruit, make your treats small, such as a single fun-size piece of candy. Sodas, energy drinks and sports drinks sneak in a lot of sugar calories. In fact, a single can of soda has nine teaspoons of sugar – the maximum an adult

Giving Beyond the Season of Christmas

ith the swipe of a credit card here, wrapping a box there, and tying a bow here this is unmistakably the season of giving. People get a warm feeling in their heart when they give generously one to another. That feeling is exemplified when giving is done to benefit those in the most need. This time of year nonprofit organizations find themselves inundated with able body workers with the heart for giving wanting to donate their time to bless someone else. And though the help is needed and appreciate the help can be a bit overwhelming. These organizations welcome volunteer help during the season but I am imploring volunteers to not forget about
volvement by our staff, “ said Oleg Jolic, Director of Volunteer Services for the Houston Food Bank. Having had the opportunity to volunteer at the food bank several times I know the joys and importance of their work. Oftentimes I have sorted and boxed food but there are other areas where the food bank needs help. “Volunteers are ingrained throughout our organization: from front desk and other administrative duties, IT, recycling to HR, monitoring and supply chain. The volunteer hours served at the Food Bank is the equivalent of more than 163 additional full time employees. Volunteers are our blood line and a critical resource,” said Jolic.
them the rest of the year. These organizations don’t just operate in the fall months but all year. Contributions are needed 365 days of the year not just during the season of Christmas. “We could not function without volunteer support. The time and expertise of our 70,000 volunteers allows us to help feed 800,000 people annually. Our food sorting process is almost done completely by our volunteers with a minimal in-
Many people know about the Houston Food Bank’s main warehouse where they feed 800,000 people each year but not too much is known about a second location called the Keegan Kitchen. Serving up to 4,000 meals a day for children in need, volunteers may help prepare and package nutritious hot meals or help sanitize the kitchen. Both the warehouse and Keegan Kitchen

dish out foods to the hungry on a daily basis. Both sometimes the volunteers counts are low. According to Jolic, the food bank is in most need of volunteers during the beginning of the year where volunteers tend to scale back after the holidays. However there are still ways to help nonprofits if you can’t physically go to them. “Monetary donations are very helpful, with the Food Bank’s resources every $1 provides a full day of meals to our neighbors in need in southeast Texas (http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/donate/ donate-money/). People can host a food or fund drive (http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/donate/ host-a-foodfund-drive/). We have a neat, new virtual food drive called e-meals where people can virtually “purchase” food for the 800,000 hungry Houstonians we serve annually. People can also use their voice and become an advocate, follow us on social media,“ said Jolic. The Houston Food Bank has even started a new Hunger Fighter Rewards program, where committed and repeat volunteers will get recognitions and cool prizes, to encourage more volunteer participation all year. Volunteers can be as young as 6-yearold with adult supervision at the warehouse and as young as 16-years-old at Keegan Kitchen. I had the opportunity to take my Girl Scout troop, who are all in middle school, to volunteer at the warehouse this year and they really got into it and learned the importance of helping others. It not made Girl Scouts leaders proud but there parents as well. We are troop committed to volunteering somewhere each month. People are in need all year so please make a resolution this 2016 to give beyond the Christmas season and bless others all year. Visit the Houston Food Bank’s website at www.houstonfoodbank.org or call Jolic at 832-369-9390 to learn more ways to help. If the food bank is not your charity of choice, there are plenty of other nonprofits that will welcome your help. Life is full of ups and downs and we all could just be one paycheck or one bad situation anyway from being in need. So while you can, give to be a blessing. not only classy but took a great deal of courage. Just think about the many mistakes you have made in your own life on the job, at home, and in other arenas. How many of them have you truly owned up to without pointing the blame at anyone else? That list I bet is short. Also showing great class were Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia. They could have acted very undignified in that moment. I have been witness far too many times to count the pure disappoint that is shown on contestants’ face when they don’t make finalists or they are not the winner. Contestants know going into the pageant that there can only be one winner and it is a 50% that they will win and 50% that they won’t. So if it is not you be gracious to the one who does win and evaluate your performance so you will be better prepared the next time you compete. I commend both of these ladies for the composure that they maintained on stage. They showed that they were good sports. If we could all practice that type of sportsmanship we would all be the better for it.

I think the situation was handled as best as it could have been. Donald Trump, the former owner of the pageant, said that would not have happened under his watch. He was just lucky that it didn’t but it easily could have happened. He also threw out the notion of having dual winners. That would have been an injustice to each girl. That crowning moment is a once in a lifetime opportunity that every girl wishes she could have but few get. Having a double crowning would have robbed each lady of the true experience of being Miss Universe. In the end I think Harvey should be forgiven and we should all move on. If you really think about it everyone wins. The Miss Universe Pageant wins because they are getting more publicly now than they have in a very long time and its free pub, the best kind. Harvey wins because although he made a major mistake he is been praise for his character of owning his mistake. Miss Columbia wins because she is talked about and probably will get a few appearances and some endorsement deals out of this situation. Some thing she probably would not have gotten if she were just the first runner up and not the shortness reigning Miss Universe in history. And of course, Miss Philippians won as being Miss Universe 2015. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW By Terri
S
The Introvert Entrepreneur
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
by Beth L. Buelow
ometimes, you’d just like to run home. It’s quieter there. No noise, no crowds, no networking or small talk. You’re a private person in a world seemingly filled with extroverts – which makes things difficult when you’re trying to start a business. So how can you work around your need for solitude while you also need to work? Read “The Introvert Entrepreneur” by Beth L. Buelow. It’s a good start. People know you as somewhat of a loner. You don’t mind going solo; in fact, you rather prefer it but you can’t: you have a business to run, which creates its own challenges. Crowds are “draining,” but networking is essential. Self-promotion seems like bragging. You like to think things through carefully, but your business needs quick answers. Yep, like Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, and Warren Buffet, you’re an introvert. The good news is that, also like them, your strengths as an introvert can actually enhance your entrepreneurship, while the obstacles you perceive could, with a little proper effort, become assets. To begin, understand the “true definition” of introvert, and know where you stand within it. You may be surprised to see that you have attributes that lie on the extroverted side of “the spectrum,” which is normal, says Buelow. The thing
to remember is that “slapping a label on you” isn’t what it’s all about. Open up when communicating by knowing your strengths (introverts are wonderful listeners) and recognizing your challenges (we’re not always good at self-promotion). Embrace fear and remember that it “serves a purpose”; trying to be fearless teaches us nothing and besides, it’s “Hogwash!” Know your FUDs (“fear, uncertainty, and doubt”) because they represent “something that wants attention.” Learn to determine what’s a true fear, and what’s just a discomfort; one is “unalterable,” while the other can be worked through. Understand that selling is not incompatible with introversion. Embrace social media; it may be an introvert’s best tool. And finally, learn to network. “If you have to [do it] anyway, you might as well find a way to make it less painful and more profitable.” As an introvert entrepreneur (note to my editors: Yes. Me!), I was eager to read this book. How can I change my stick-close-to-home tendencies in order to grow my business? The answer was in “The Introvert Entrepreneur,” but it took some digging. There’s a lot of common knowledge in author Beth L. Buelow’s words, and it’s mixed in with advice from other entrepreneurs, as well as from

Buelow herself. If you’ve been around the business block a time or two, that found-inevery-entrepreneurialb o o k -ev er-p ri n t ed information won’t help you much. The good stuff comes when Buelow goes past the superficial and into the real work of doing business as an introvert. There – especially in the chapters on fear and networking – are the reasons why I think this book is worth having. In the end, I found what I truly needed here and, particularly if you’re an introverted business newbie, I think you will, too. For you, “The Introvert Entrepreneur” is a home run.
