he final days of the Obama presidency are upon us. His popularity is rising with the economy, and with the increasingly stark contrasts to his successor. It is worth being clear about the legacy that he leaves behind. Obama came to office facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The global financial system teetered on collapse; the auto industry faced bankruptcy; the economy was shedding 400,000 jobs a day. He also inherited the catastrophe George Bush had created with the debacle in Iraq and government misrule dramatized by the shame of Katrina and New Orleans. Now, eight years later, the economy nears full employment, with more than 15 million jobs created and private sector jobs growth at a record 81 consecutive months and counting. Wages are beginning to rise, after long years of stagnation or worse. The auto industry has enjoyed some of its most prosperous years. This isn’t an accident. Obama
POLITICAL By Burt

As Obama Departs, We Owe Him Our Thanks helped rescue the economy by passing the largest stimulus in history, the most ambitious financial reform since the 1930s, and daring and direct intervention to save the auto industry. Economic growth helped lower the annual budget deficit to less than half the level he inherited. Obama also passed the largest health care reforms in six decades, providing health insurance for 20 million Americans. His reforms saved those with pre-existing conditions, provided the young with protection under their parents’ programs and, although most Americans don’t realize it, slowed the rise of health care costs dramatically. Running for re-election in 2012, Obama recognized that income inequality had become “the defining issue of our time.” With his progressive tax reforms both in his health care plan and in the partial repeal of the top-end Bush tax cuts, and with expanded tax credits for low-income workers and families with children, Obama made a significant beginning in addressing that inequality. Abroad, Obama struggled against great opposition to reduce America’s exposure in the wars without end in the Middle East. His nuclear agreement with Iran not only dismantled its nuclear weapons capable facilities, it also provided the most comprehensive and aggressive verification mechanisms in the history of arms control. In opening relations with Cuba, he helped reduce America’s isolation in our own hemisphere and made the historic turn from
a policy of embargo that had failed for five decades. His most historic contribution was to understand the clear and present danger of catastrophic climate change. The agreement with China and subsequent Paris Accord cemented a global consensus on the need for bolder action on global warming. On his watch, America began to reduce its reliance on coal and its greenhouse gas emissions. Obama won a majority of the votes in both his election and re-election, something neither his predecessor nor successor achieved. He governed with grace and dignity, despite grotesque and too often racist provocations. His family provided a model for all Americans, with Michelle winning hearts across the country. He and his administration were remarkably free of scandal. His administration demonstrated once more that competence could be valued in Washington. He did all of this while facing unprecedented, unrelenting partisan obstruction, with the Republican leader of the Senate opposing him at every turn, intent on making him a one-term president. In part because of that opposition, much remained undone. The stimulus would have been larger and the recovery stronger except for Republican opposition. The national minimum wage would have been raised. A national infrastructure project to rebuild America would have been launched. Progress on making America the leader of the green revolution, the next global industrial

aith Johnson was appointed as Dallas County District Attorney by Gov. Greg Abbott earlier this month. Johnson, a former elected state district judge and former assistant prosecutor, will now be Dallas’ first black woman DA. She succeeds Susan Hawk, who resigned for health reasons. “Throughout her career, Faith has proven herself a dedicated public servant, most notably as a criminal prosecutor, where she attained the status of Chief Felony Prosecutor during her time in the Dallas County District Attorney›s Office,” said Gov. Abbott said. “As a former prosecutor, district judge, and while serving on the Department of Public Safety Commission, Faith has shown a commitment to law enforcement and the rule of law. She has devoted herself to defending some of our most vulnerable Texans and I am confident that in her new role as District Attorney, Faith will continue to fight for the people of Dallas County and ensure that justice is served,” he said. revolution, would have been greater. Guantanamo, the shameful prison in Cuba, would have been closed. The Voting Rights Act would have been revived, and much more. For most Americans, the recovery was slow; for many it was invisible. Donald Trump won election promising working people a better deal. He appealed to our weariness with war, suggesting a less interventionist policy. He played upon divisions, rousing fears about immigrants and Muslims. He pledged to “make America great again,” in part by undoing everything Obama. So it is worth marking what Trump will inherit, as we head into what is already a rocky and tempestuous presidency. Unemployment under 5 percent. Eighty-one months of jobs growth and counting. Average wages rising at 2.4 percent over the last year. Growth at 3.5 percent over the last full quarter. Inflation at 2 percent. 20 million more Americans with health insurance. America one of the global leaders in the green industrial revolution. A president respected at home and abroad, known for his thoughtfulness and his great eloquence. Let us hope that Trump can build on that legacy, and not lead us into a far deeper hole. the DA’s office to serve as district judge and was one of 11 candidates considered by Abbott. She grew up youngest of 13 children in Atlanta and first came to Texas in 1977 to attend Texas Southern University’s Law School. She now manages her own firm, which practices civil, criminal probate, federal and family law. “For us, law is about people. At the end of the day, we want all our citizens to feel respected and feel we handled them with the highest level of honesty and integrity,” Johnson said. “After 17 years on the trial bench, I know what it takes to manage an efficient docket and as district attorney, I’ll do everything feasible to assist our district and county judges,” she said. In 2014, Johnson was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Texas Public Safety Commission, where she is one of five Commissioners who oversee homeland security, border patrol and terrorism in Texas. To keep the seat she will need to run and win in the 2018 GOP Primary and the general elections. Keep in the know on local and state politics with Burt Levine. love the start of a new year. It has an air just similar to Christmas. We go from a season of giving to a season of reinventing. We want to reinvent ourselves by losing weight, starting a hobby, or establishing a business. After jotting down plans and scribbling out our goals for the new year, we vow that this year won’t be like last year because we are going to follow through with all plans made and achieve all goals set. With passion and vitality, we move from our thoughts on paper or electronic device to actions in motion only to fizzle out few months in. What happened? What went wrong? Many Americans know this feeling of diving all into something only not to gain the desired outcome you had hoped for. Dr. Stacia Pierce was once like that too until she discovered the process of journaling thanks to her dad. Journaling is not a new concept but the way in which Dr. Pierce does it may be. Our first journals are usually started when we are children. They are called diaries. Your diary becomes like your best friend where you chronicle your innermost thoughts, your feelings about people and issues, and the highs and lows of life. At 13, Dr. Pierce, who was just Stacia then, discovered a new purpose for journaling, to write out your success. Dr. Pierce has always had the heart of an entrepreneur instill in her by her dad. With his help, she opened her first business when she was 13, an ice cream shop and video game center. Like many business owners, she started having problems that she didn’t know how to solve. Of course, she went to her dad for help. But instead of giving her the answers he gave her a journal. He said, “Write down your problems, get quiet and tell me what solutions you can come up with on your own.” And added, “Figure out things for yourself.” Turns out that was the best advice he could have given her.

Not present – Milan Parris, Tenille Tubbs and Kathryn Wallace. Achieve Success in Life and Business This Year Through Journaling Stacia went to work and did come with the solutions to her business problems. But she also stumbled onto something else. She started calling that first journal her success journal. And from that time until now she has done this process called success journaling where she writes out her problems to discover her solutions, a process that doesn’t just apply to business but all areas of life. Something she figured out as an adult. Just like she started being a businesswoman at a young age, she became a married woman pretty young too. Married at 19 and divorced by 21, Dr. Pierce took to journaling to figure out what went wrong. Throughout the marriage she journal while reviewing her thoughts in her journal she recognized a patterned. She only wrote down negative thoughts and asked negative questions. Dr. Pierce has deviated from success journaling to dumping journaling where her journal had become a space for dumping negativity. Then the aha moment happens when a thought went off in her head. “You keep asking negative questions in your journal you are going to keep getting negative answers.” Which trigger another thought, “If you are going to have success, use your journal as a success journal. Ask the right questions, you’ll get the right answers.” These thoughts birth The Success Journal. Originally created by Dr. Pierce, who is a certified life, business, and success coach, The Success Journal is a space to write out your purpose, dreams, and goals for life and discover solutions on how to achieve them. Using prompts to ignite ideas, to-do lists to make action plans and other unique features to get you started, Dr. Pierce using her personal successful journaling methods to coach and motivate you to
achieve success. “Journaling is so important because it gives you a place to effectively figure out success for your life. It gives you a space for that.” She also added, “ Also, the journal is a place where you can start taking inventory in what you have done that is good and you can come up with some of your skill set.” The Success Journal is broken down into several sections to guide you towards your goal. The first section gives way for you to write down 101 dreams and desires for yourself. Followed by a section where you make those goals more attainable by making plans on a weekly basis to change the direction and scope for your life while pushing you closer to your goals. Other sections include one for quotes and affirmations to keep you inspired. There is a place for notes for thoughts and gratitude, book notes on best reads for business, and one for morning meditations. The Success Journal is a wonderful tool to advance your life and professional goals. What a great way to start the New Year with a new outlook on life and success! Stop doing things the same way expecting different results. Everyone needs a little help (and coaching) to accomplish his or her goals. Change up the way you’ve done things in the past and embrace life coaching as a way to achieve your dreams. “Crystallize thoughts on paper and set miracle manifestation in motion,” Dr. Pierce. Dr. Stacia Pierce is founder and CEO of LifeCoach2Women.com. She’s affectionately known as the whole-life coach because she helps you tighten the unraveled loose ends of your life and discover your true self so you can give one hundred percent to your career, family and personal life. She’s is committed to empowering entrepreneurs around the world to live their dream life and run their dream businesses. The Success Journal is available at www.staciapierce.com for $69.00.

ow, it’s December 2016 already. Where did the year go? It seems that just yesterday we were toasting and singing Auld Lang Syne, ready for what the New Year would bring. As the life cycle would have it, we’re here again, but this time we’re going to do it differently. We’re going to eat healthy, work out at least 3 times a week and finally buy the home we’ve been dreaming of all our lives to complete our American dream. While I too could greatly benefit from the first two endeavors, my expertise is in the latter. Most people are aware that buying a home is the largest, most important purchase in one’s lifetime but what are the steps? How do I begin, should I go to my bank, where do I look? The questions continue until the paralysis hits and you find yourself gearing up to conquer this same fear 12 months later. The first step in the home-buying process begins with understanding your credit. After the beginning of the economic decline in 2007, the mortgage industry tightened their belts and made obtaining a mortgage loan virtually impossible, unless you have a FICO score of 680 and above. Since that time, guidelines have relaxed and obtaining a mortgage is not as daunting as many might think. The preferred score for an FHA loan is 620 while the preferred

Your American Dream is Closer Than You May Think Conventional loan score is 640. Keep in mind, these scores can vary depending on the lender. There are some lenders that will offer an FHA loan with scores around 580, but always remember to read the fine print on these loan products. There are numerous free consumer credit sites which will allow you to view your credit history and FICO scores. These scores will be a bit higher than the traditional mortgage credit report. When credit is pulled from these sites it is called a “soft pull”. This allows you to see your credit history and scores without lowering your FICO scores. Once you’ve reviewed your credit and confirmed that all is correct, the next step in the home buying process is obtaining a mortgage pre-approval. Knowing your buying power will ensure a seamless and pleasurable experience. At this point, I would also suggest contacting a licensed Realtor®. new breast cancer model, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, will help health care providers more accurately predict breast cancer risk in their Hispanic patients. The model, developed by a Kaiser Permanente researcher and his colleagues, is the first to be based exclusively on data from Hispanic women, and will become part of the National Cancer Institute’s online tool that helps providers calculate breast cancer risk in individual patients. The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool currently includes risk models for non-Hispanic white, African-American and Asian and Pacific Islander women, but no model specific to Hispanic women, and studies show that the tool underestimates breast cancer risk in these women. Denzel Washington Delivers ‘Fences’
Caldwell, Feature Writer
“You’re not going to like me too much in this one.”
T
he heart of Denzel Washington in “Fences” is that he’s complicated, but when he is not? For the past four decades now, Washington has made a career out of complicated. The flawed hero is an acting archetype that should be renamed after Washington’s image. Cold stares; wide smiles; powerful monologues; internal discussion that dares anyone near him to be sucked into his orbit. And he’s correct, you shouldn’t “like” him in “Fences”, the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Tony award winning play. As Troy Maxson, he’s not only holding on to the fleeting glory of being a Negro League star too old to transition into the major leagues, he’s also restrictive as a parent to his son, Cory. A football scholarship be damned, no son of Troy Maxson will play sports. And his relationship with his wife, Rose played by Viola Davis? Even more complicated thanks to the curveball found halfway through the film. There’s subdued power, there’s shock and awe and then there’s what Washington and Davis deliver on the screen in the film. Their journey throughout the film is one Washington calls, “from hell to hallelujah”. “Fences”, the most popular of Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle is the first in a ten-picture deal Washington has with HBO to bring the entire cycle to life. “Fences” is the only one in which he’s acting and directing. He will executive produce the other nine as they head to HBO, with “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” being the next film in line. “I’ve been given the opportunity by the August Wilson estate, he did 10 plays—I’m directing, producing and acting in one, and I’m executive producing the other nine,” Washington said in 2015. “I made a deal with HBO. We’re going to do one a year for the next nine years.” He confirmed it again during a “Fences” conference call last week, his voice just as rich and full of assured bombast. “This is a 15 year project of mine and I’m going to take care of August Wilson. Nothing is going to get in my way.” *** At 62, nothing has seemed to slow Washington down. Always dashing with a smile that could elicit both fear and warmth, the actor has set himself as the standard in Hollywood. His name is a mononym, synonymous with other singular name actors by whom you recognize 10

with the smallest utterance of their names. You know Denzel almost like a family member. While in Pittsburgh filming “Fences”, the community who came out to see the show felt that way too. People walked out of their doors and saw camera crews. The initial curiosity would draw anyone out of their own comfort zones. Once onlookers realized that it was Washington along with Davis and a film crew set to retell Wilson’s vision of a Pittsburgh family, more people followed. The extras on set were merely those who had seen different “fences” throughout their lifetime. The hard-working husband and stayat-home wife trying to mend their differences every day in order to make a marriage work. A man who chases deferred dreams and attempts to shield his son away through tough love. The people of Pittsburgh carry a sense of pride with them. Their houses drooped over principle filming of “Fences” as brick and concrete reminders of what the city and its people represent. One man, whom Washington referred to as Mr. Greenlee would stop by and offer the cast coffee. Mr. Greenlee is partially deaf. Another man couldn’t help but bring the crew food. A woman, when filming the large thrush of emotional tug-of-wars between Rose & Troy offered her home to Washington for a bit of reprieve. “A blessing,” Washington said. He used the home as a quiet place of prayer. “It was like being at home for me. There was one woman in particular who came out before we even started shooting. I said, ‘Thank you for coming out.’ She said, ‘We’ve been watching you for a long time. I asked her to pray for me. She told me, ‘Denzel, my family and I’ve been praying for you for 25-35 years. We’ve been watching you. We know how hard it is.” www.StyleMagazine.com
Being in Wilson’s Pittsburgh is a testament to the playwright himself. Wilson, who died in 2005 at the age of 60 wouldn’t give the rights to “Fences” for a film adaptation unless there was a black director attached to the project. The names attached over the past 29 years have been large. Eddie Murphy, John Singleton, Laurence Fishburne. When Hollywood first presented Oscar-winner Barry Levinson to direct “Fences”, citing the idea that qualified black directors weren’t available. Wilson balked. “Until the industry is ready to hire a black to direct De Niro or Redford,” Wilson said then. “Blacks should at least be able to direct their own experience.” It wasn’t until after his death that “Fences” got off the ground. Washington took the helm, stating that he wouldn’t attach himself to a film or project of this magnitude until he married himself to it. Six years ago, Washington and Davis starred in the revival of “Fences” on Broadway, earning Tony Awards for their performances as well as Best Revival. Even with it being the most famed of Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, it wasn’t the favorite of its creator. As time has progressed, Wilson’s influence as a playwright has yet to diminish. One of the finest writers of the 20th century, his works have been brought upon Broadway, revived and more. Even if “Fences” is chiefly about the black experience in 1957 Pittsburgh, it is a story with ideals that align to no color or creed. It is a work that operates under the same sun as many a “great man” dramaturgy. Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin In The Sun” is its closest black analog. Arthur Miller’s “Death Of A Salesman” is its closest analog according to non-Wilson types. The story about a man attempting to

film with principal African-American actors. “Moonlight”, released earlier this fall managed to secure back-to-back weeks of over $1 million earned in ticket receipts while playing on less than 50 theaters across the country. Washington may feel elated with those numbers but he knows the undertaking that black Hollywood still has to face in order to routinely get films regarding the black experience made. He touts that Viola Davis will no doubt “win the Academy Award” for her portrayal of Rose in “Fences”. But it won’t be a regular occurrence if people don’t make their way to the theater. “We can’t complain if we don’t show up. We can’t complain about the lack of roles. They call it show business, it ought to be called business show,” he said. “Because the next show is predicated by the business we do here.” He continued, “Every year that I’ve been on this Earth has prepared me for this moment. I’m going to, I promise you all, I’m going to deliver.”
reconcile with his own sins is as American as can be. Washington’s sententious tongue is asked to bounce off of Davis’ soft demeanor. In turn, they deliver star-studded performances that surely will win them Academy Award nominations. *** During the conference call, Washington appeared on behalf of the “Across The Fence” initiative in which fans of the film sent messages, photos and more to loved ones both as declarations and others as mementos of remembrance. Sons wrote to their fathers and mothers. Women wrote and submitted photos of childhood friends, their future husbands and more. Children thanked their loved ones and so on. Over nine million people participated in the campaign. He remarked about the need for people to see “Fences” and to support black films. Similar remarks were made by Mimi Valdés, the producer of “Hidden Figures”. While “Fences” expanded to a wide release on Christmas Day, making over $11 million. “Hidden Figures” had a “soft open” and pocketed over $800,000 during the four-day Christmas holiday. The film played on only 25 screens across the country. By comparison, the soft open for “Hidden Figures” is similar to another lauded

BOOK REVIEW
You’re a Leader, Charlie Brown
ometimes, you just have to laugh. That’s how it is with business: you have to laugh because if you didn’t, you’d cry. It’s been that way for the past few years: up and down, good and bad, and there’s always room for improvement. So why not find that help and laugh a little more by reading “You’re a Leader, Charlie Brown” by Charles Schulz and Carla Curtsinger. For most, if not all, of your life, you’ve chuckled at the antics of the Peanuts gang: the perseverance of Charlie Brown, the assertiveness of Lucy, the Zen of Linus. You’ve grown up with the comic strip – but did you ever think about the lessons you learned from it? Take Charlie Brown, for instance. He’s had a lot of failures with footballs, Halloween, a Little Red-Haired Girl, baseball, and other issues of life. He might have gotten a bit discouraged now and then, but he was always showed courage and tenacity with his goals and he was willing to try again. There’s no doubt that Lucy was in-your-face, but she got everyone’s attention. That’s not to say you should be bossy, too, but assertiveness is a good thing, as is confidence and a willingness to speak up when you have something to say. The one bit of advice that Lucy might give: remember, it’s “not about you.” It might seem like Linus spends all his time in the pumpkin patch, but there are lessons there, too. Practice good listening skills, and show that you’re paying attention to what’s being said. Focus; ask good,
pertinent questions; and then be silent. Use the 80 / 20 rule: listen eighty percent of the time and speak just twenty percent of any conversation. Like Sweet Sally, being nice is important, as is the ability to be present when people are speaking. From Schroeder and his idol, Beethoven: practice, practice, practice. From Pigpen, learn to include everyone. Peppermint Patty would advise teamwork and to “own your personal style.” And Snoopy might argue that adaptability is essential: really, it’s not easy to sleep on top of a doghouse every night. Huh. I guess I never thought of a comic strip as motivational, but when you think about it… well, maybe “You’re a Leader, Charlie Brown” makes sense. Then again, there’s a lot of cutesy in this book. The late cartoonist Charles Schulz was, after all, entertaining people, not advising them on business, even though there are parallels that have been sitting in plain sight for decades. Still, there’s no mistaking the fact that this book is soft, pretty darn fluffy, and filled with cartoons. And yet, there’s no doubt that new MBAs will get a kick out of this warm-fuzzy reminder of the getahead ideas we all learned early-on, while CEOs will find good, useful advice wrapped in happy childhood memories and lightheartedness. And so, because you know that a little levity is what you need at this time of year, read “You’re a Leader, Charlie Brown.” You may never work for Peanuts again. …4…3…2…1 When the clock strikes twelve what will you be toasting with? Your favorite wine, beer, or cocktail! New Year’s Eve almost doesn’t seem complete without something to drink. JaNae Thomas, owner of Glamorous Drinks, thinks no party is complete without a drink. Her professional mobile bartending service with class will ensure that no gathering is left high and dry. JaNae’s entrepreneurial dreams fell right into her lap, sort of. It began while she was starting Thomas out as an adult working at Pappasito’s as a waitress. Once immersed in the atmosphere, JaNae knew she wanted to be on the managerial track. That road led JaNae to become a master waitress, fabulous head waitress ,and hotshot bartender. Going behind the bar was one of the best decisions JaNae said she ever made since bartending has taken her so far. JaNae’s initial goal in life was and still is to become an entertainment reporter. In fact, she did stint as an intern at Houston Style Magazine to hone her journalistic skills. It was this love for reporting that made her make a major move from her hometown of Houston, TX to the happening city of Los Angeles, CA. Little did she know that this move would also help her to become her own boss. In LA, JaNae got straight to the basics of establishing shelter and getting a job. Having experience already as a bartender and nightclub waitress, she naturally gravitated towards similar jobs. While working in this field in LA JaNae luck upon bartending a private party. A light bulb went off in the twenty’s something head, “Hey, I can do this.” JaNae’s side hustle became her main career. Glamorous Drinks is a full service trav- Thomas w tih staff eling bar servicing the smallest to the largest of parties no matter if you are a downtown local to a high-class celebrity. When booking Glamorous Drinks JaNae gives the utmost in customer service working with the client to customize the service to their event’s needs. She does everything from crafting signature drinks to go with an event’s theme to entire personalized drink menus. Her team will then come to your event professionally dressed exhibiting the best in customer service to keep you and your guests and fully hydrated. When the event is over JaNae and crew pack it all up and leave the area cleaner than they left it. Glamorous Drinks specialized in alcoholic drinks but is also available serve nonalcoholic beverages as well. This was a skill JaNae picked up on during her first private event at a bat mitzvah. Just as she does with alcoholic drinks, JaNae customizes nonalcoholic drinks for children and teen events as well as for events where adults don’t drink. A major bonus of Glamorous Drinks is that their services expand beyond drink service to including waitressing too. If you have a party with hor ‘d oeuvres and other food options but no wait staff, Glamorous Drinks can be at your service. Jane still has aspirations to be an entertainment reporter but being an entrepreneur has widened her dreams. Operating Glamorous Drinks has allowed her to grow in ways she never imagined. She is extremely grateful to her parents who she says didn’t always understand her dreams but never wavered in their support of her. She also extends gratitude to her first teachers in the trade at Pappasito’s and her pastors at her church in LA that taught to listen to God and always to be in alignment with her purpose. JaNae also credits her relationship with God and following His instructions for her success. Glamorous Drinks is mainly based in LA and is ranked #3 in the area for mobile bartending. The business operates in Houston and has limited operations in Las Vegas. Right now JaNae is concentrated on building her brand in the LA and Houston markets and will further establish it in Las Vegas in the future. Next time you throw an affair think of Glamorous Drinks to elevate your event from blah to fab. Remember to drink glamorously responsible. TRAVEL
By Cecilia Smith, Feature Writer
O
nce Halloween creeps around the corner life seems to kick into overdrive as fun and spooky costumes quickly give way to the wonderful smells of Thanksgiving dinner and then dashing on hurriedly to the delights of wrapping your loved ones’ gifts to place under the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree. But while the holidays are a source of joy for many, for others it can be a tad bit stressful as shopping expense and unexpected family obligations can make it difficult to get into the holiday spirit. I’ve come to cherish December as a time to give thanks, as well as gifts to those not on the naughty list. Unfortunately, the magic of Christmas and its jolly fat Santa is largely gone by adulthood, and in its place you learn to take joy in more practical things, like the Texas sized crockpot my sister gave me. You see, I love to entertain my friends and family often so this practical gift really meant a lot to me. Actually, tears were almost shed! And while I know I will put my new crockpot to good use, had I still believed and written a letter to Santa I think – well actually I know, I would have definitely asked a for a staycation nearby so that I could enjoy an evening out and a much needed good night’s sleep.
For nearly two decades, Kemah has been one of the most premiere boardwalks in the country, offering big fun with a small-town vibe right at the water’s edge. At the heart of it all is the Boardwalk Inn, a recently renovated treasure for those looking for a view of the bustling waterfront boardwalk. Moving against the traffic that was headed into Houston for the holidays, I traveled the opposite direction and made my way to the hotel, anxious for a mini-vacation ahead of Christmas. I quickly learned that whether looking for a family friendly destination or a simple romantic getaway, Kemah definitely has something for everyone. A California native, upon arriving, I was immediately reminded of home. The boats tied to the dock similar to the Berkeley marina I’ve walked many times. With a parking garage tucked into the side of the building, I was able to access the hotel with ease. Inside, the Boardwalk Inn boasts a string of new renovations. Spacious and warmly decorated, seashells and well-placed ornaments created a unique seaside experience; fitting for a December day that had reached a high of 80 degrees. Welcome to Texas. Check-in was quick yet personable, as the courteous staff armed me with a map of the boardwalk and offered suggestions on which attractions I might enjoy for the evening. Filled with amenities, the hotel offers everything from priority seating at boardwalk restaurants, to cruise packages for those looking to enjoy the scenic view of the Gulf Coast. There’s something for everyone, including seasonal festivals, live entertainment and one-of-a-kind retail shops.
Staycation 2017: Boardwalk Inn, Kemah Boardwalk From there I headed to the fourth floor, a Presidential suite nestled at the end of the property. A fresh fruit bouquet and a tray of warm cookies and chocolate drizzled strawberries were waiting for my arrival, the personal touch adding to the experience. I was immediately blown away by the decor, modern yet laced with the feel of home.
With 52 unique guest rooms - 4 Master Suites, 11 Deluxe Double guest rooms and 37 Deluxe King guest rooms - each offers a different view of the boardwalk. In addition to plush pillows, posh toiletries and three separate balconies, the suite was easily larger than a number of one-story homes. As an added plus, the bedroom balcony provided a view of the restaurant that I would be dining at for the evening, The Flying Dutchman. While taking in the sites en route to my dinner reservation, the enjoyment of “Jingle the Boardwalk” weekend at Kemah which included the sounds of Christmas music mixing with the joyous screams of children racing from ride to ride and families and couples gathered around the towering tree in the plaza, using the backdrop to create personalized pictures and memories brought warmth to my heart. Quickly seated at a table overlooking the water, my waiter, James, delighted me with a brief history about the venue. A Kemah landmark, the restaurant has been a local favorite for years, earning the distinction of being the only location of its kind in the nation. While Landry’s Inc. now owns the Kemah Boardwalk, The Flying Dutchman has continued its own traditions by using original recipes, resulting in a delicious seafood option for those looking to dine on the waterfront.
is a must after having a tooth removed. Right? And I can happily report that no teeth were injured during the process. Stuffed and relaxed, I sat enjoying the views from large bay windows as the fog rolled in from Galveston. As the boardwalk began shutting down for the evening I took the opportunity to enjoy a lovely rooftop view from the pool before heading back to my room for the evening. Relaxed and at ease, that night I enjoyed some of the best sleep I’ve gotten in months. So what are you waiting for? Check out these upcoming promos and book that much needed getaway!

Service is key and to me, it’s the deciding factor in whether a dining experience is great or merely average. In this case, it exceeded all of my expectations. A quick personal story - Four days prior my wisdom tooth was removed, making it difficult to eat certain foods. James was both patient and extremely courteous, going above and beyond to describe menu options and provide personalized touches throughout the meal, including a warm towel to wipe my hands during a snow crab binge. After all, a snow crab binge
Additional Dozen red roses $110-$149, must call in advance to order with their guest room reservation.
On a personal note: Houston Style Magazine sends our regards to Tina Hare of the Boardwalk Inn, who graciously took the time to give a tour of the hotel that included a look at their impressive boardrooms and all-in-one rental options, making it an excellent choice for those looking to host or book events. I’d like to thank the staff for the incredible hospitality. I’m not only looking forward to returning, but I’m inviting others to do the same. Thank you Santa for bringing a bit of that childhood magic back; it’s just what I asked for. (Photos courtesy of Landry’s Inc and Flying Dutchman Facebook)

Allow Me to Reintroduce the Toyota RAV4!
By Bell of TotallyRandie.com, Feature Writer
2016 Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid
A
sk yourself, what do you really know about the Toyota RAV4? I’ll tell you what I know. According to industry rumors, the legendary famous hip-hop group TLC was given a RAV4 in the 90’s as pretty much the only payment for services. Additionally, Kanye West stated, “What you think I rap for? To push a RAV4?” Needless to say, everything I have known about the Toyota RAV4 pretty much was based from R&B music leading me to believe that the crossover SUV was an uncool vehicle to drive. So what happened when I got older? I never even thought twice about the Toyota RAV4. Until now! The worst thing I could ever do was test drive the 2016 Toyota RAV4 XLE Hybrid. Not only was it a beauty, it was sporty, roomy, and handled extremely well for the size of the ride. The RAV4 is the first crossover SUV for the brand debuting in 1995 with a semi-box like shape. I saw it everywhere, especially on the beach, but I still

thought to myself, how could I drive a RAV4? Ten years later the shape of the RAV4 in my opinion would cater to young mothers who wanted something fun and sporty to drive. Not as big as an SUV but more room added to accommodate the space needed. Totally a family car, I thought. So straight out of college I would definitely not take a second look at that car. Another 10 years past and now here I am a millennial. Gas prices have skyrocketed and guess who makes their debut as a hybrid? That’s right, the Toyota RAV4! In just one year the Toyota RAV4 XLE Hybrid became the second best hybrid after the Toyota Prius (the first hybrid car from the brand). What an accomplishment! Now here I am looking at its sleek design, seeing it as the perfect car for a high school grad off to college, a graduating college student entering their career, a millennial, or a family person. The crossover hybrid gets 30-34 mpg on the highway. I drove around Houston for a solid week and still barely touched half a tank. It’s innovative and advanced with all known technology such as the Toyota Park Assist, which to me has the clearest rear view camera I’ve ever seen. I’m sure this aided in the RAV4 winning International Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick with optional front crash www.StyleMagazine.com
prevention. Will it break the bank? Not even close, the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid was named Best Hybrid SUV for the money on the U.S. News & World Report. Additionally, over 90% of RAV4s sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today. Looks like I missed out on an amazing SUV. After reviewing the Toyota RAV 4 for a week, I seriously wanted to trade in my car for this vehicle. If you are looking for a vehicle to take you into 2017 start at Toyota and #LetsGoPlaces!
