Mr. President: Come to Ferguson Jesse Jackson
National Writer
F
erguson is too important to be treated on the margins. It is too important to lead the news one day, and disappear the next. The shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, the police response to the demonstrations that followed, the horror of a clearly biased prosecutor driving a grand jury to fail to make an indictment -- all this isn’t simply about Ferguson. There is a Ferguson in every metropolitan area of America. At times, a single incident throws a powerful light on a reality. Ferguson is one of those times. And to ensure that this reality is not simply discussed in passing, but dealt with, elevated to the top of the national agenda, President Obama should come to Ferguson. In 1965, one week after the police riot that greeted peaceful demonstrators trying to cross Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., Lyndon Johnson addressed a joint session of Congress,

eeling with high emotions following the past week’s fires in Ferguson, Missouri more than 300 parents, pastors, police and political elected leaders met for an elaborate town hall this past Monday. The crowd was motivated to bridge gaps before an African American teen such as Michael Brown is struck down by the local police here in Houston. “What happened in Ferguson was and is a tragedy all around. It was a tragic loss of life for a family and community to lose their son,” said Bishop James Dixon, the host for the forum at his north Houston Community of Faith Church. “It is a tragic loss of values because we don’t support violence or stealing, the assaults, burning or looting but we do applaud our people in Houston and Harris County for not going that way in our response to it here.” Dixon’s speakers at the unprecedented forum included Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia, District 15 State Senator John Whitmire, Houston City Council Member and former Police Chief Clarence Bradford, Pct. 1 Harris County Constable Alan Rosen, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church Pastor Emeritus Rev. William A. Lawson, Nation of Islam, Rev. Eric

the necessary changes. The growing war in Vietnam squelched those hopes. Twenty-four years later, after Los Angeles riots that followed acquittal of the four white policemen in the beating of Rodney King ended in 60 deaths and a billion dollars of damages the Christopher Commission was created to probe the causes, finding that not much had changed. The country cannot afford neglect for another quarter century. It is time to act. President Obama should come to Ferguson. He should lay out the structural realities that lie exposed in the wake of the shooting of Michael Brown -- and that are common to cities across the country. He should demand action on an agenda for reviving these communities, and rebuilding trust and hope. A high level commission, chaired by distinguished bipartisan leadership, could probe the conditions that produce that shooting and others like it across the country. Its focus should be less on the behavior of police and more on the conditions of the community. It should assess the system of criminal injustice, but go beyond to the structural realities that create Fergusons. Its report should be clear and pointed; its reform agenda comprehensive, with a budget attached. The president should include that in his next budget, and call
on Congress and the country to act. Ferguson, like Selma, exposes injustice that has been building for years. The president’s engagement can make Ferguson, like Selma, a spur for long overdue reform. The risks of failure are great. The first African American president has understandable reluctance to challenge the country on civil rights or on the rights of black communities. His cautious speech after the prosecutor’s announcement of the grand jury decision reflected that. But the risks were great when Eisenhower dispatched the troops to Little Rock to enforce school desegregation. They were great when Johnson promised to overcome in his speech on Voting Rights after Selma. Leadership involves taking risks. And the costs of acting, even if the Congress refuses to act, are far less than the costs of moving on from Ferguson until the next child is shot and the next impoverished and isolated community erupts. calling on them to pass the Voting Rights Act, and making the electric promise that “we shall overcome.” Johnson knew that the Selma horrors exposed a reality that could no longer be ignored. It was time to act. In 1967, after riots broke out in cities across the country, Johnson convened a commission headed by Illinois Governor Otto Kerner with a mandate to probe the causes of the riots and recommend actions so that these tragedies would not be repeated. The Kerner Commission’s conclusion -- that we were moving toward “ two societies, one white and one black, separate and unequal” -- captured the nation’s attention. The commission concluded that African Americans saw the police as an occupying force, dispatched to protect the privileges of whites, and insensitive to the protection of the minority community’s lives or rights. It found that disparate underlying conditions providing the kindling that could be sparked by incidents at any time, and that these conditions were present across the country, including racially segregated communities, scarred by inferior schools, high unemployment, inadequate public services from public transport to parks to hospitals. The Commission called for action, and demanded that it be accompanied by a budget sufficient to make

of Commerce Chairman, credited local law enforcement for its diversity and pointed out the diversity in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Houston Police Department, METRO Police, and Houston ISD and Pct. 1. Whitmire, Texas’ Senior State Senator and a former State Rep., said it is the diversity in the leadership of Houston and Harris County that makes this area different from Ferguson. He said here Michael Brown’s body would not have stayed on the street for four hours and here the high strung emotions would not have led to loss of life, limb and property that happened there.

“I remember when Lee Brown was brought to be Police Chief. He brought us neighborhood oriented policing and storefront policing. Elections matter to folks and in Ferguson local folks don’t participate in elections,” said Whitmire, who with 40 years in the legislature won re-election last month. Criminal Defense Attorney Vivian King said she knew an indictment wouldn’t come to the officer in Ferguson “but was it worth going after him for a $6 cigar? Was it worth his life?” Pastor E.A. Dekard talked about a march in Third Ward in response to Ferguson that attracted 400 participants but no violence because he and HPD worked together every step of the march. Pastor James Nash asked why the announcement of the non-indictment was held until the night. DA Devon Anderson said as a former prosecutor, judge, criminal defense lawyer and now DA she really does care and wants to know the concerns of anyone regarding impropriety. Sheriff Garcia said he knows there are problems but he is encouraged there is an interest by all for those problems to be addressed. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW Identity Theft Alert
Y By Terri
By Steve Weisman
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
our credit card was declined. Such an annoyance. You paid your bill, the expiration date was right, your signature was on the back, and it should’ve worked. Eventually it did, much to your relief, but that made you think. Is your credit report, your privacy, your identity safe from criminals? Find out if it is - and what you can do to keep it safe - by reading “Identity Theft Alert” by Steve Weisman. Hacking and spamming and theft – oh, my! Every time you hear another report of credit information breached (and the attendant hassle involved), it might seem like thieves are everywhere these days – and that suspicion might not be too wrong. “Identity theft is one of the most pervasive and insidious crimes of today,” Weisman says; in fact, more than 12 million people became victims last year. So what can you do to avoid joining them? Weisman lists the ways… Online, use strong passwords and encryption and beware of sites you visit. Never open a link in an email unless you’re certain it’s “legitimate,” and have your antivirus program up-to-date at all times. By the way, Mac users shouldn’t feel safe anymore; hackers are purposefully creating Mac viruses now. Also, be cautious when clicking on links you see online. “Curiosity killed the cat,” says Weisman. “Let the cat live.” When answering the phone, remember that your bank will not ask you for debit card or PIN numbers. Neither will the FBI or the IRS; the general rule of thumb is not to release any personal information unless you initiated the call. That’s especially true if the person on the other end of the line seems to have
half of your information. Chances are they’re only waiting for you to get flustered and fill in the rest. Monitor your credit rating and your monthly bills with eagle-eyes. Keep those eyes on your credit card as much as possible when it’s not in your possession. Know where the safest ATMs sit and why you should never use public copiers for important document duplication. And finally, remember that it’s almost impossible to guarantee complete safety of your identity – even after you’re dead… Though it sometimes seems a little sensational, and though it leans toward repetitiveness, I found the information in “Identity Theft Alert” to be overwhelmingly good. Part of the reason is that, while you’ve been warned at great length about identity safety, author Steve Weisman offers tips I doubt the average person would generally consider. Weisman is, after all, an expert in this category – something you’ll notice, once you get past the commonsensical and into the quieter threats that exist. It’s also helpful that Weisman doesn’t assume anything about his readers; instead, his advice is methodical and simple to understand. The info is especially senior-friendly, although beware that the print-size isn’t. I think this is a book to read and refer to often. Buy “Identity Theft Alert,” highlight it, flag it, heed it, and you may avoid the worst this season. Why would you decline? Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Chante’ Moore
R&B Diva Chante’ Moore Spreads Holiday Cheer in Houston
veryone has something they love about Christmas whether it’s the smell of eggnog, the sounds of carolers, or honoring timed traditions. It is all about the tree for R&B singer Chante Moore. She is even a bit selfish about it and calls tree decorating one of the most selfish things she does because no one is allowed to help her. Laughing Moore said, “I don’t even let my kids help me.” Christmas tree decorating became her passion as a child when her mother bought trees at Christmas time just for the then little girl Chante. Since she was the only one in the house who really cared about the tree she decorated it by herself to perfection. “Tree decorating is my thing,” a cheerful Moore laughed. Singing is also her thing and Houstonians
can’t wait to welcome Moore and fellow R&B diva Angie Stone as they headline the Annual Mayor’s Celebration and Tree Lighting on Friday, December 5th at Hermann Square. Moore will be spreading holiday cheer singing Christmas favorites as well as some of her own music. Although Moore loves to visit Houston, she will spend Christmas in the same place she has been for the past 11 years, in her kitchen. “I wanted to make Christmas a holiday my kids remembered me cooking,” she said as she recalled the many Christmas memories of her own mother and grandmother in the kitchen. Moore makes everything from greens, homemade cornbread dressing, mac and cheese, dirty rice, cream corn, baked ham, and baked turkey. Sounds good, I am thinking I will make reservations for her house this Christmas. Someone also pulling up a chair to Moore’s table is Beulah. Fans of R&B Divas: Los Angeles may remember Beulah making appearances on the show. She is what calls herself when she eats everything in sight. Think of Beulah as the alter eating ego of Moore. “Beulah was everywhere during season one,” Moore said as she laughed about Beulah always stuffing her face. Moore has learned many things about herself as a result of being on the reality show and one of them is her appetite for food. She laughed saying I guess that is why they didn’t feed us during season 2. She also learned that she could keep her composure and yet be assertive. We definitely saw this in action during season 2 when the cast - Claudette Ortiz, Lil’ Mo, Michel’le, Chrisette Michele and Leela James – wasn’t all that nice to Moore when she was going through an extremely hard time in her life. Dealing with the death of her brother, the 20th anniversary of the death of her mother, her daughter going off to college and a custody battle over her son, Moore was an emotional wreck. When the “divas” started going in on her during the filming of season 2 of R&B Divas: Los Angeles with the animosity and hurtful attacks Moore went into self preservation mode as she calls it. “I guarded my heart because I was hurting. It didn’t feel good at all.” It was at that time Moore learned that silence is a good defense. “Once I realized there wasn’t

a whole lot of listening going, I stopped talking and I learned.” Now she is in a better place. She has healed from the death of her brother, gotten use to having an empty nest while her daughter is away and shares custody of her son with her ex so the new season of R&B Divas should be a lot different from the previous. “I am in a better place. I am in a better state,” said Moore. Her coping skills with all the trials of her life came through the art of written expression. She penned a book Will I Marry Me? to inspire women and men to not make the mistakes she made and use them as lessons for their own lives. It is also meant to be a support for women to know they are not alone in their situations. “It is a means to take back your power and celebrate you. Vow to yourself to never let you down.” Currently, Moore is working on bringing the book to life with a one woman stage play. Speaking with Moore was a pure delight and I never stopped laughing because she is so sweet and sincere. Houston is sure in for a treat on Friday, December 5th at 6pm at Herman Square outside of City Hall at the 95th Mayor’s Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting Presented by Reliant. For more information, visit houstontx.gov.
R&B Diva Angie Stone Headlines Houston’s Holiday Celebration By
Demez White, Feature Writer
O
n Friday, December 5, 2014 in Downtown Houston, Texas the mayor will hold her annual lighting ceremony. Those featured will be Chante’ Moore, Ernest Moore and Angie Stone who I had a chance to speak to fresh off a recent tour from Australia. Angie has been in the music business since 1979 and started by being in several groups. That’s one of the big differences in where she is now and where she was when she first broke into the industry. This year alone she’s working on two albums, one will be an album of covers and one will be an album featuring all new music written and composed by her. Friends and fans have been clamoring to get her to Houston and Texas in general for the longest but it wasn’t until recently that she’s had the opportunity with such a busy schedule. At the Mayor’s ceremony she will be singing holiday songs as well as some of her originals that people love. Other celebrities in attendance will be Mr. and Mrs. Claus who I talked to and they are also quite excited about seeing Angie Stone perform live for the first time. It should be an amazing evening so come ring in the season with the Mayor’s Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting Presented by Reliant on Friday, December 5, 2014 in the heart of greater Houston. This amazing event is a holiday tradition of music, Santa, and family fun. A huge Holiday Tree, glowing with Christmas lights, shimmering ornaments and a stunning star that will light up the streets of downtown Houston this holiday season. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.houstontx. gov.

hen you do a detox, you remove toxins from your body. These toxins exist everywhere including in the air you breathe, the foods you eat and in the medications we are prescribed. A detox cleanse can be very beneficial and can make you feel a lot healthier, although you need to make sure you are engaging in a well-researched protocol and continue to give your body the nutrients it needs to function properly and support the cleanse. Doing a detox wrong will drain your body of energy. While a detox done right results in higher energy levels and an increased sense of wellness. Here are 5 of the benefits that you can look forward to enjoying when you complete your own detox cleanse: 1. Get Rid of Excess Waste It is possible that you are carrying around excess fecal matter in your body. This excess waste can add on weight and just make you feel lethargic. When you do a detox, you can clean your colon and eliminate all this excess waste you are carrying around. 2. Increase Energy Levels Having a lot of toxins in your body can decrease your energy levels. You may feel so tired all the time that you don’t feel like doing anything. Instead of going out with your friends or participating in different activities, you likely just want to lie on the couch all day. If you do a detox, your energy levels are typically restored making you feel brand new with the energy to do everything you want to do.

Common’s Nobody’s Smiling Tour Hits Houston
Paul, Feature Writer
Common at Warehouse Live
“
Nobody’s Smiling” is Common’s latest album and he’s promoting it on a 13-date tour. He made a stop in Houston this past Tuesday night. Common’s Chi-Town flavor and lyrical genius set the Warehouse Live stage on fire. Houston has been in anticipation for Common’s “Nobody’s Smiling” tour and his show left me speechless. I have nothing but respect for Common and his craft, not just because of his musical talents, but also because of how he treats his fans and people behind the scenes. Common sets the standard for how all artists should embrace and
appreciate their fans on and off the stage. The “Nobody’s Smiling” tour brings fresh elements to the hip hop tour scene I haven’t seen in a long time. New Orleans native and hip hop artist and producer Jay Electronica opened the show like only he does with his unique brand of performing style. Jay has major love from Houston and did something that you don’t see many artists do…he invited more than 20 Houston fans on stage with him while he performed one of his hits. Jay is one of those artists who doesn’t like to be kept in a box when it comes to his music and
performing. In every word, we felt his genuine love and appreciation for Houston. Not only did Common sing favorites from his current “Nobody’s Smiling” project, but he also brought a little hip hop nostalgia to the tour with a surprise performance from the Geto Boys. The “Nobody’s Smiling” tour gave props to hip hop’s Notorious B.I.G., as well as other hip hop artists. Common always shows love to the ladies and one lucky female fan was brought on stage and he did a little freestyling for her. The freestyling didn’t stop there and he did some lyrics showing Houston some major love, mentioning JJ Watt, Third Ward and Frenchy’s Chicken. The whole show was nothing but high energy. His genuine appreciation for the Houston fans came out through his performance. Though he is knocking doors down in Hollywood, Common has not turned “Hollywood” and he still pays tribute to his Chi-Town roots. He’s made his mark in the music scene and in the acting game as well, but he has not forgotten his Chicago roots and his love for people. I respect him in that he has not let the Hollywood opportunities change him and he has stayed true to who he is and his craft. Not only does Common’s “Nobody’s Smiling” tour entertain, but the music from this album keeps us socially conscious. For upcoming ‘“Nobody’s Smiling” tour dates and updates about Common, visit http://www. thinkcommon.com/.

Celebrate the Holiday Season with Lobster
Lobster dish
T
he holiday season is a time of celebration – and there’s no better way to make the season’s celebrations extra delicious than with seafood, particularly lobster. Whether you’re hosting a holiday cocktail party, enjoying a casual meal or gathering family and friends for a feast, lobster makes a great addition to any holiday menu. When you think of lobster, you probably think of a whole, steamed lobster – or maybe a grilled lobster tail paired with your favorite steak. But, it’s time to get inspired because lobster’s flavorful meat
can be the star of a variety of dishes that will delight your friends and family. “From tender Maine lobster tail to succulent claw, knuckle and leg meat, there are many interesting ways to prepare and enjoy lobster this holiday season,” said Chef Dustin Hilinski, Corporate Executive Chef at Red Lobster. Red Lobster is the world’s biggest and best seafood restaurant and recently introduced a new menu with a variety of lobster-based dishes like Wood-Grilled Lobster Tacos and a Roasted Maine
Lobster Bake. Here are a few tips from Chef Hilinski for incorporating lobster into a holiday meal: Lose the fork and knife: Tacos are a great, party-friendly food to eat when mixing and mingling at a cocktail party. Try a twist on seafood tacos by using lobster. Start with fresh, warm flour tortillas and layer on cooked lobster, then add your favorite toppings. For a spicy kick, top with chunky pico de gallo or jalapeno-infused ranch. Pair with pasta: When you’re hosting a large group over the holidays, pasta is a great way to serve family-style. Make pasta exciting with big bites of lobster, adding a familiar sauce like scampi. Combine your favorite seafood dishes: It’s the season for indulgence, so there’s no need to choose just one of your seafood favorites. But, cooking all of your favorite seafoods at home can be intimidating, so leave the preparation to the experts. Red Lobster offers a variety of combinations to satisfy your cravings, like the new Wood-Grilled Lobster, Shrimp and Salmon – a Maine lobster tail, jumbo shrimp skewer and fresh Atlantic salmon, all wood-grilled, finished with brown butter and served over green beans and baby gold potatoes. For more inspiration on how to enjoy lobster, and to find a Red Lobster location near you, visit www.redlobster.com.
