hy did Flint suffer a water catastrophe that now requires that children be treated as if they had been poisoned? It wasn’t because the people were negligent. From the moment Flint began taking its water from the polluted Flint River, residents warned about water that came out of the faucet brown, tasted foul and smelled worse. They began packing public meetings with jugs filled with water that looked like brown stain. It wasn’t because the democracy failed, because in Flint democracy had been suspended. The city, devastated by the closing of its auto plants and industrial base, has been in constant fiscal crisis. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, one of the crop of proud conservative governors promising to cut taxes for the rich and get government out of the way, appointed an emergency manager to run the city. Elected officials had no say. It wasn’t because the city manager and the state environmental

POLITICAL By

The Flint Water Crisis and The GOP’s Class War agency and the governor weren’t warned. Warnings were issued from the beginning. General Motors even suspended using the water because it was too corrosive for the auto parts it was making. Nevertheless, city and state officials assured the worried residents of Flint that it was still safe to drink. The result is that Flint’s children -- particularly those in the older, poorer, disproportionately black neighborhoods -- have been exposed to elevated levels of lead. Lead poisoning isn’t like contracting a cold or getting the flu. Lead is an immediate and unrelenting threat to health. It causes miscarriages and births of low-weight babies. Children exposed to lead can have disabilities that afflict them for their entire lives. Lead stays in your bones. Yet even after a federal EPA official warned that the tests were being skewed to underreport levels of lead, even after heroes like LeeAnne Walters reported that her children’s hair was falling out and that they were developing rashes and constantly sick, even after the heroic pediatrician Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, an Iraqi-American, reported elevated levels of lead in children’s blood, their concerns were dismissed, their alarms scorned, they were attacked for sowing hysteria and the poor residents of Flint were told the water was safe to drink. Why were the people and the obvious signs and the experts ignored? They would not have been ignored if these were wealthy suburban neighborhoods and the water suddenly turned brown. They would not have been ignored if the children of an all-

white community were at risk. State officials dismissed the complaints as exaggerated. The brown water was just rust. Officials thought people ought to be grateful for what they had. The laws, they wrote, insure the water is “safe to drink.” It doesn’t regulate how it looks, its “aesthetic values.” The water looks bad because it’s from the “Flint River.” Flint is old and poor. The pipes are old and poor. The people are black and poor. They just have to learn to put up with it. And if the lead seems to be at dangerous levels, flushing the system before the tests, skewing the sample to the most recently built systems can jigger the results to get by. Some might get hurt, but no one worth caring about. This is the ugly reality of the right-wing assault on America’s working people and particularly on people of color. They want to get “government out of the way” -- out of the way of their greed. The successful have earned special treatment -- in taxes, in contracts, in interest rates, in public investment. The unsuccessful need to learn self-reliance. They need to accept what they get and be grateful for it. Flint is not a bug in their perspective; it is a feature. They fought against African-Americans getting the right to vote. Now they use “emergency” to set up dictators -- emergency managers -- to occupy predominantly African-American communities. They worry that the poor get too much “free stuff” -- food stamps (once a Republican program), health care through Medicaid (so they refuse to expand it), unemployment insurance

when they lose their jobs (so they limit its coverage), minimum wages (which they fight against) and “costly regulations” that require safe water and clean air and safer workplaces. The “establishment” Republican candidate Jeb Bush has called for a “regulatory spring cleaning” to strip away regulations that protect health and safety. The Republican Congress annually seeks to cut backs EPA’s budgets and authority. The Republican governors gleefully gut the budgets of their own state agencies. They don’t worry. The children of the rich will be protected. It is the poor -- of all races but disproportionately people of color -- who will be left at greater risk. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder should have the common decency to resign. The state and the federal government should step in and rebuild Flint’s water system immediately. A federal investigation should issue indictments where justified. But this isn’t simply about water and Flint. This is about an ideology that believes in this rich country, the privileges of the few must be protected, even if the necessities of the many are sacrificed. “Of course there is class warfare,” billionaire Warren Buffett once acknowledged, “and my class is winning.” You can write to the Rev. Rodney Ellis Readies for Harris County Commissioner Contest

Burt Levine, Political Writer

J

ust hours after news broke that Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee had died, the county’s first and only African American County policy maker, State Sen. Rodney Ellis was mum but not shutting out his running to succeed Lee. While walking from Mayor Sylvester Turner’s inauguration at Jones Hall Ellis said then it was too early talk about it. “I’m shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee. El Franco was a personal friend and mentor – someone I always turned to when considering big decisions in my life, so I’ll miss him greatly,” said Ellis. Lee’s name, considered one of the most powerful in Texas government, representing more than one million people with personal office and also campaign budgets of many millions of dollars was considered one of the most powerful players in Texas politics. Lee served in the post for 30 years. Just as powerful as Lee’s legacy in public service is that of Ellis’ as a in the Texas Senate. Ellis is one of two African American state senators to have led for decades anywhere in all of Texas. Ellis has already filed for reelection for the Texas Senate, despite wanting to be Harris County Commissioner, since the filing deadline was in December 2015, Ellis and Lee›s names can not be removed from the March 1st Democratic Primary ballot where early voting begins in about two

4

Rodney Ellis

weeks February 16. Last Friday Harris County Judge Ed Emmett named revered public law attorney and former Houston mayoral candidate Gene Locke to hold Lee’s seat until the end of this year with the pledge that Locke will not be a candidate for the full term which would begin in January 2017. “El Franco’s legacy will be that of public service, as he was always a stalwart advocate for Harris County and Precinct One. He positively impacted the lives of countless residents each year, whether through the Street Olympics, public park upgrades, or senior programs. El Franco used the power of his office for the greater public good, and our community is better off thanks to his dedication and desire to

serve.” Ellis continued in speaking of the man he served with as both were and are considered among the giants of Texas African American history. Since no Republican filed in the decidedly Democratic Pct. 1 Lee represented under Texas election rules, it›s too late to take Lee›s name off the March 1st primary ballot. Lee was running unopposed in the Democratic Primary as he had for most of the last three decades. Following the Democratic Party Primary March 1st and the May 24th run-offs, where Democratic Party precinct chairs will be chosen by the voters in individual voting precincts in June, new precincts chairs will select Lee’s replacement on the upcoming November Presidential General Election ballot. “I’m excited to visit with Harris County precinct chairs and other leaders about continuing El Franco’s legacy of service to this community,” Ellis said. “I can confirm that I am seeking to be the next commissioner for Harris County Pct. 1.” Ellis is not the only African American Democratic Party politician hoping to get hooked up with the job that pays $149,000, nearly $100, 000 more than that of city council member in Houston and a mountain more than the $600.00 a month earned by State Senators and Representatives. Harris County Commissioners also wield far more power and influence as one

www.StyleMagazine.com

of four on the commissioner’s court compared to being one of 16 Houston City Council Members, one of 31 Texas State Senators or one of 150 Texas State Representatives. County Commissioners also can collect in the millions of dollars in campaign funds. Lee left $3.9 million in his campaign account that his campaign treasurer now is responsible to disburse. For such a plum political position Houston City Council Members Larry Green, Dwight Boykins and Jerry Davis want to be considered as well as former City Council Member and former Police Chief C. O. Brandford. State Rep. Garnet Coleman has confirmed he is interested in Ellis› seat as well as likely Boris Miles and Senfronia Thompson to replace Lee on the fall ballot should Ellis be picked by the precinct chairs and withdraw from the SD 13 general election. That would set into motion a potential domino effect. Precinct chairs in SD 13, which includes precincts in both Harris and Fort Bend County, would nominate a replacement for Ellis. If they were to choose a member of the Texas House, precinct chairs in that House district would then to do the same, until all vacancies are filled. Bridges of Madison County: A Musical with the Perfect Love Story

ou ever longed for another life or met your true soul mate when it was much too late? This is the story of the meeting of two people Francesca, an unhappily married, Italian housewife, and Robert a handsome, free- spirited, traveling photographer who is in Madison Country photographing its famous covered bridges. These two lonely hearts are brought together by chance and soon discover although their love is “ the kind of certainty just comes just once in a lifetime”, they decide not to pursue one another past their passionate, illicit affair. Set in 1960’s, The Bridges of Madison County Musical is a torrid love story about unfinished love, longing, and loyalty. The musical like the hit movie (that starred Clint Show Cast Eastwood and Meryl Strep) is based on the not only showcases a talented ensemble cast, but novel by Robert James Waller, but unlike the also I was just as impressed with the direction, stage movie includes a wonderful Tony award winning and design of the production as well. The current music score that mixes folk, country, pop and operatic production on tour is directed by Bartlett Sher, musical passages composed by Jason Robert Brown. It was direction by Keith Levenson, scenic design by Michael just in 2014, that The Bridges of Madison Country Yeargen, costumes by Catherine Zuber, and lighting Musical received four Tony Award nominations by Donald Holder. including: Tony awards for Best Original Score and Actors Elizabeth Stanley (Francesca) and Best Orchestrations for Jason Robert Brown. If you are truly a music fan you will fall in love with this Andrew Samonsky (Robert) gave Houston audiences amazing, composed score that has a proven, wide an undeniable vocal performance. Stanley, who received her training at Indiana University’s Jacobs appeal for all audiences. School of Music, has been a soloist with numerous TUTS’ Bridges of Madison County Musical

orchestras throughout her career and her compelling voice wowed Houston audiences. Samonsky, just as vocally impressive, has also appeared as a soloist with symphonies across the country. Favorites ballad of the night were “Wondering” a riveting, powerful duet between Stanley and Samonsky, and “Who We Are and Who We Want to Be,” a beautifully sung ballad that included the entire talented ensemble. T his heart warming, sweeping romance connects with any and everyone one who is tired of their mundane, ordinary life and dreams for a love that is something much more. The show was very compelling, however I would not recommend this one for kids due to mature language and scenes. TUTS’ Bridges of Madison County Musical is a must see; with it’s amazing, beautifullysung ballads and performances so filled with passion and hankering avidity. This is definitely an incredible show to catch so go and see it with the friends or bring out your beau and make it an incredible date night to remember! The Bridges of Madison County Musical is showing through January 31st in Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center in Houston. To purchase tickets now visit www.tuts.com/shows/bridges-madison-county.

BOOK REVIEW

Year of Yes

or far too long, you’ve been holding back. Opportunities have presented themselves, and you’ve passed on them. Chances have leaped in front of you and you skipped them, but you’re not sure why. Some days, you feel like you’re in a tenfoot-deep rut; in the book “Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes, you’ll see how to get out. With two babies and a “tween” at home, several mega-hit productions, and hundreds of employees on her payroll, writer-creator-producer Shonda Rhimes had ample reason for turning down requests. She was busy – and she was also terrified. Rhimes is a private person, an introvert’s introvert. She hated publicity, interviews, and foofaraw, all of which scared her to the point of panic. “NO” was a much safer word until, on Thanksgiving Day a few years ago, her sister said six words that set Rhimes back on her heels: “’You never say yes to anything.’” A few days later, after those words sunk in, Rhimes realized how wrong it was that her sister was right. Rhimes was “miserable” and knew that she shouldn’t be, so before she was tempted to let the idea go forever, she texted a friend and vowed to say “YES” to everything scary for one years’ time. Almost immediately, the “Universe” sent her the first challenge: an invitation to speak at her alma mater’s graduation. Next came an invitation to interview with Jimmy Kimmel and, said Rhimes when it was done, “I didn’t die.” She said yes to letting go of outdated ideas about motherhood. She became “a big social butterfly” before learning to say yes to play. As an F.O.D. (a “First. Only. Different.”), she’d already said yes to T:5”

“literally changing the face of television,” but she had to learn to watch the yeses she stuffed in her face… and she said yes to weight loss. She said yes to those who inspired her. She said yes to compliments. She said yes to learning how to appropriately say “no.” She said yes to singlehood because everybody’s “happy ending” is different. And she said yes because “Saying yes… is courage.” With all she has on her plate – one high-profile company, three kids, four hit TV shows - you should wonder where author Shonda Rhimes found time to write a book. And you should be glad she did. With wisdom, wit sharper than a Ginsu knife, and the warmth of a BFF, Rhimes takes readers on her year-plus-long journey, from “It’s NEVER going to get better” to a life of joy, on a road filled with potholes of self-doubt, hairpin curves, and the realization that inviting fears into her life wasn’t going to kill her. Yes, I loved it. Inspirational? YES, and because her TV creations are dramas, you’ll be surprised and delighted to find that Rhimes is a funny writer, too. She’s also thoughtful, and her experiences will make you think: maybe you do need play. Maybe you do need to learn when “no” is appropriate. Maybe you do need “Year of Yes,” no holding back. This is especially true for African Americans— those over age 40 and those with a family history of glaucoma are at higher risk for the disease. More than 520,000 African Americans have glaucoma, and this number is expected to increase by more than 300,000 over the next 15 years. Don’t Blame the Oscars; Blame Hollywood and Its Infatuation With “The Token Black Guy”

By Demez White, Feature Writer

H

e’s been around since the Godfather, pops up in some of your favorite movies of all time. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No! It’s the token black guy! I want anyone reading this to stop and think about how black men are portrayed in movies and the roles we are given. We’re not always the thug or the criminal but we are often the sidekick. We are always casted as the helper to the superhero that’s going to save the world. It happens in Iron Man, Batman, and Captain America, these men

aren’t villains or weak necessarily but they also aren’t in the position to win the day. And it’s not uncommon that they need saving themselves. Look, if I’m being honest none of the “black” movies I saw this past year did I watch and think, “This man deserves an Oscar!” But what I did see was plenty of movies where there were award-winning roles that never go to black men. We’ve probably all seen Oceans 11. A smart movie, good dialogue, a little humor, a little action and they had their one or two black guys but if

you notice the roles are always just enough but never the leads. We have to stop looking at the actual awards and start looking at the scripts and casting and the way Hollywood views African American actors in general. In 2016, we still have people disgusted that Star Wars had a young, black lead actor. I love movies and I see roles like Cinderella Man, Titanic, and The Notebook and think, “When have I ever seen a black man be allowed to play these roles?” Jimmy Kimmel did a skit on #OscarsSoWhite last week and it wasn’t funny at all. Not because it was in poor taste or mocks a serious issue. It wasn’t funny because it wasn’t funny. I don’t know who’s on Jimmy Kimmel’s staff but I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t any black writers to give perspective. Hollywood has gotten it in its head that it’s okay to give black men and women small roles in major movies because “We gave you something.” It’s not okay and boycotting the Oscars so next year they give some black guy a nomination isn’t going to change anything. House of Mandela Wine By Monica Jones, Special to Style

T

he wine industry, a predominately male dominated industry with a history dating as far back as 350 years would seem intimidating to most, however Tukwini Mandela, granddaughter of former South African President Nelson Mandela, has proven otherwise by creating House of Mandela which furthers the Mandela family legacy. With wine becoming one of the most important fair trade products in South Africa, House of Mandela is helping to preserve the history of winemaking and trading for a country that continues to make its presence noticed within the wine & spirits industry. And, despite much skepticism, Tukwini has proven that her determination and entrepreneurial spirit can provide the staying power that the House of Mandela needs to thrive in the world of wines. As the head of the brand, Tukwini has been faced with her fair share of challenges. When asked what advice she could give to aspiring female entrepreneurs she exclaimed, “Just because you have failed at one thing or something did not go quite the way you expected it to, does not mean you should give up. Those are all opportunities to learn something about yourself, improve a process or the way you do things. Resilience is the key to success and there is always a silver lining somewhere.” Tukwini aims to uphold and accomplish new strides for the family namesake with the continued development of the House of Mandela wines. The concept, which was initially introduced by a family friend, didn’t seem like a viable venture initially. Tukwini recalls, “At first we just were not interested, but when we did our research, we found that South Africa has an extensive history in the wine industry and majority of South Africa’s wine employees are black; we fell in love with the people who were so passionate about the wine industry. Wine was a great vehicle to enable us to tell our family story without politicizing it.” The Fair Trade, named the Thembu Collection, launched in 2010 and was inspired by the values of the Thembu people who were hospitable and disposed to peace rather than war. The collection, which includes 6 varieties comprised equally of whites and reds, denotes a portion of profit from each bottle to help improve the lives of farm workers in poverty stricken communities. In addition, the House of Mandela stays true to culture by not only incorporating the influences of South Africa but also paying homage to Nelson Mandela via the craftsmanship of their bottles. Each bottle incorporates a solid gold signature emblem and features the vibrant prints similar to those that Mandela was most known for wearing. As for what’s next for the budding businesswoman and the House of Mandela you can assure that innovation is key. To keep up with the digital age, House of Mandela will be revamping their social media campaign to boost interaction with their customer base. Tukwini’s goal is to provide a home for the House of Mandela - an environment where people can fully engage with the brand through all of the five senses. Read more in our one-on-one with Tukwini Mandela. HSM: What early challenges did you overcome entering a male dominated industry? TM: Just a general condescending attitude: what are the Mandela’s doing in wine? They know nothing about it. Some wineries we approached wanted to produce the best for themselves and give us the dregs. Some didn’t think we had any staying power and would soon leave the wine industry defeated. We put all of that aside and focused on our goal. HSM: Being a woman in business what advice can you give other aspiring female entrepreneurs? TM: To be strong, determined, consistent and focused. Just because you have failed at one thing or some thing did not go quite the way you expected it to, does not mean you should give up. Those are all opportunities to learn something about yourself, improve a process or the way you do things. Resilience is the key to success and there is always a silver lining somewhere. HSM: What significant moment or event led you to create House of Mandela wines in 2010? TM: The concept was introduced to us by a family friend through my brother. At first we just were not interested, but when we did our research, we found that South Africa’s wine industry and history is 350 years old, the majority of wine employees are black and we fell in love with the people who were so passionate about the wine industry. Wine was a great vehicle to enable us to tell our family story without politicizing it - tell the history of the House of Mandela, where Nelson Mandela came from. HSM: What special winemaking techniques are used in the production process? TM: We produce easy drinking wines at every price point and take advantage of the diverse terrain with interesting soil types to make quintessentially South African wines. Our wines are more fruit driven with a touch of minerality, which gives a great long finish on the palette. HSM: Where do you see the House of Mandela brand in 5 years? What’s next? TM: To have a home for the brand - an environment where people can fully engage with the brand through all of the five senses. For more information, visit www.HouseofMandela.com.

Fans were able to vote for their favorites from Dec. 1 until Dec. 20, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. ET on PremioLoNuestro.com. All winners will be announced on the night of this year’s ceremony. “Premio Lo Nuestro” starts at 7 p.m. ET/PT (6 p.m. Central) with “Noche de Estrellas” (Night of Stars), a live pre-show special that gives fans a first peek at the talent arrivals for a glamorous and special night. Macy’s Inspires and Ignites Action This February in Support of Go Red for Women

lways known for making things better grocer giant H-E-B has dropped to 12th position from its 10th place spot in 2015 for Supermarket News’ list of the largest 75 grocers and wholesalers according to San Antonio Business Journal. Although H-E-B clears an estimate $23 billion annually, the rise of stores like Target and CVS providing both prescriptions and modern day conveniences have pushed them up in rank to make the top 10. This is causing more stores like Wal-Mart, Kroger, and Costco, all who hold the top 3 spots, to be more inventive with services to compete. It said that H-E-B and grocers like it will have an uphill battle with that of online retailers like Amazon that increased its business with the introduction Prime Now, the one-hour delivery service.
