onfirmation hearings for Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, named by Donald Trump to be attorney general of the United States, will begin on Jan. 10, before Trump is even inaugurated. The rush and insistence on only two days of hearings reflect Republican efforts to cram the nomination through before Americans understand what is at stake. Sessions will, no doubt, present himself as a humble, genial and reasonable public servant. In reality, Sessions is an outlier, an unimaginable nominee as attorney general, an implacable opponent of the very rights and liberties that the attorney general is supposed to defend. As more than 200 civil rights, human rights and women’s groups noted in a unified statement: “Sen. Sessions has a 30-year record of racial insensitivity, bias against immigrants, disregard for the rule of law and hostility to the protection of civil rights that makes him unfit to serve as the attorney general of the United States.” Three decades ago, a

POLITICAL By Burt

Sessions Will Be a Disaster If Confirmed As Attorney General Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee rejected Ronald Reagan’s nomination of Sessions to a federal judgeship. It deemed him unfit for the bench due to his repeated racially biased remarks, his intemperate dismissal of the ACLU and the NAACP as “unAmerican,” and his open opposition to the Voting Rights Act, which he scorned as “intrusive.” Republicans agreed that no person with such extreme views should adjudicate the laws that he clearly disdained. That was then. Now Donald Trump and Charles Grassley are intent on putting Sessions in charge of enforcing those very laws. The attorney general of the United States is a powerful position. The person who holds this office has immense discretion in how the law is enforced -- which cases the office chooses to prosecute and which it does not. The attorney general heads several agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the immigration courts. Given his views and that power, there is no question that Sessions would put fundamental rights at risk as attorney general. --Voting rights: Since the gang of five right-wing justices on the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, states across the country have passed various impediments to voting, with disproportionate effect on people of color, the poor and the young. Under Barack Obama, the Justice Department has consistently defended the right to vote. Sessions has stated that he believes these voting changes, primarily in the South, were not intended to hurt minorities, despite numerous court decisions knocking down the laws for

that very reason. In this vital area, he embraces the Jim Crow doctrine of “states rights,” and he will no doubt weaken federal enforcement of voting rights. --Women’s rights: Sessions has consistently opposed every measure designed to enforce equal rights for women. He refused to condemn Trump’s remarks about grabbing a woman by the genitals, saying he wasn’t certain that constituted sexual assault. (For the record, it is, without question, assault). He voted against reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, voted to block increased protections for females in the military from sexual assaults and has consistently voted against access to reproductive health services, even opposing funding to combat violence against clinics, which is on the rise. He voted against equal pay for women, against paycheck fairness and against raising the minimum wage, which benefits women the most. --LGBT rights: Sessions has consistently voted against equal rights for gays and lesbians. He opposed amending the Hate Crimes Prevention Act to include violence based on bias against gender, sexual orientation and disability. He voted for the constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman. --Immigrant rights: Sessions has been an implacable opponent of any immigration reforms, supports mass deportation of undocumented workers and embraces Trump’s proposal to build a wall across the Mexican border. While many Republicans disavowed Trump’s outrageous proposal to ban all immigration of Muslims, Sessions said

Ellis Leads Harris County Democrats Into Office

R

odney Ellis in one of his first acts as County Commissioner hosted a formal inaugural event at NRG Stadium Monday, January 2nd featuring Mayor Sylvester Turner administering a celebratory oath of office to Ellis, DA Kim Hogg, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Tax Assessor Ann Bennett Harris and 30 judges and constables in the largest Harris County Democrat stampede to office in decades. Turner, having been sworn in a year ago to the day as Houston’s second African American Mayor, was thrilled to swear in Ellis as Harris County’s second African American Commissioner; Ogg as the first Democrat in 30 years as DA; Gonzalez as the County’s second Hispanic Sheriff; and Bennett Harris as the first African American and first female Tax Assessor Collector and Voter Registra. Ellis takes the seat on Harris County Commissioners Court Gene Locke held following the death a year ago of El Franco Lee, who held Harris County Commissioner Pct. 1 seat for 31 years. Ellis, a former Houston City Council Member, served for 27 years as one of two African American State Senators from Texas. Senator Royce West of Dallas is Texas’ other African American state senator. He also served as Congressman Mickey

he was open to the idea. --Drug reform: More than 60 percent of Americans now live in states where medical or recreational use of marijuana is legal. Sessions, an advocate of state’s rights when it comes to civil and voting rights, favors a federal crackdown on drugs, arguing, “Good people don’t smoke marijuana.” Under Sessions, the war on drugs will be escalated, and probably tied to the war on immigrants, with drug laws used to search and harass immigrants, looking for the undocumented who could be deported for violating drug laws. Over the last 50 years, America has made progress toward equal protection under the law. The civil rights laws, the Voting Rights Act, equal protections for women, for gays and lesbians, the first steps toward police and sentencing reform are central to that progress. All Americans have benefited. The country is far stronger as a result. Yet these are the very laws and rights that Sessions rejects. He was one of the first and few Republican senators to endorse Donald Trump. His nomination is no doubt a return favor. But as attorney general, Sessions will drive this country apart, exacerbate racial tensions, trample basic rights and endanger the public belief in the rule of law. Senators in both parties should make it clear that this country has no desire to turn its back on five decade of progress. You can write to the Rev. We can do great things in this Precinct building on the legacy of El Franco Lee and throughout all of Harris County,” Ellis said. Ethel Kaye Lee, Commissioner Lee’s widow, also attended, thanked enthusiasts for their kindness and praised Ellis as a strong leader. Ellis said one of his first priorities is to enact reforms to the

County’s criminal justice system with the help of Ogg and Gonzalez. Ogg earlier in the day had put her hand on a Bible held by her son Jack as her father former State Senator Jack Ogg led her in her oath. She admitted she was “nervous to fill the shoes of DA.” She said she “remembered the DA’s duty is to hold life and death in her hands for the safety and security of all of Harris County.” “I just want you to know how proud I am of everyone here. We will do this as one body with the Lord to light our path. I welcome all of you to a new era in criminal justice in Harris County,” Ogg continued announcing reforms including her plan to meet with the police chiefs, the sheriff and constables to encourage diversion programs and not arrest for marijuana use. Gonzales said thank you, “This has been an amazing campaign. I’ll never forget the friendship, encouragement, dedication, talent and hard work so many have contributed to efforts to get us here today. Now it’s time to move forward together to make our county safer and our system more fair.” Keep in the know on Texas politics and Texas election issues with Burt Levine. It was hard work but despite it Moran was able to withstand grueling work all while maintaining her pursuit of education. She would later graduate high school as the salutatorian. Now on her own in the world, Moran would find love with Andrew Moran. The two married and were deeply in love for 68 beautiful years. From that union five children were born – 2 boys and 3 girls. Though their courtship started in Louisiana, their love story would take them Texas to make their permanent home. Throughout her life, Moran was known as a woman who cared for her community. She

Moran’s spiritual needs were met at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She was an original parishioner of the church. Moran tithed regularly and attended mass throughout the week. Professionally, Moran worked with the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years. Socially, Moran was just as active. Having active membership with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Christian Mothers, Ladies’ Sodality, Catholic Daughters and bazaar committee of Our Lady Star of the Sea. In her spare time, she enjoyed writing and poetry. She loved power walking with her family and friends. Claudia Marie Llorens Moran will be cherished by a host of family and friends. Final arrangements for Moran will occur on Monday, January 9th at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church (1401 Fidelity Street, Houston, TX 77029) with visitation from 8:30-930am; rosary at 9:30am; funeral mass at 10:00am; and burial at Veterans’ Cemetery at 12:45pm.

People knew that Moran always had a shoulder on which they could cry on and a hand in which they could hold. Just as much as she took care the community, she took care of home. ight years ago America was a very different county. Our economy was at a low. Healthcare was not made for everyone. Troops were at war. Topping off everything there weren’t enough jobs to go around for all of America. The country was pretty dim. But we found our light in hope through a change we could believe in brought on by an African American guy from Chicago, IL, who would later become the 44th President of the United States. In his first official capacity as President during his inaugural address he knew what his winning of the election meant. It was far bigger that America had progressed enough to do what some thought was unthinkable by electing an African American to hold the highest office in the nation. Larger than the fact that little black boys and girls truly knew there was no ceiling limiting them to what they could do. Obama’s victory meant Americans were tired of suffering, tired of having things done the same way. They wanted, they needed Obama to restore hope and to restore America. President Obama heard them, heard us. Unlike previous presidents, he tried hard in many ways to answer America’s longing for change. He was smart to know that this resolution was not going to happen quickly nor was it going to occur by himself and with government officials but it was going to happen with the help Americans. The blueprint for this plan was presented in his inaugural address in 2009 where he wanted America to hold elected officials accountability for the task they had at hand and for Americans to stand up and take responsibility for the job they had to do. “For as much as government can do, and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies,” said President Obama. He further added, “What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition on the part of every American that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world; duties that we do not grudgingly accept, but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task.” It was an agenda that seemed too much too handle. One that had some many issues that it was difficult to determine which to tackle first. Having so many complexities that it would make the average person feel overwhelmed. However, we didn’t have that kind of president. Our President, my president, was one who didn’t look at the size of problems but attempted to break them down for a more comprehensive understanding to come to a more conclusive decision leading to some monumental fetes that past successors hadn’t managed to achieve. One of those being 10

healthcare reform. Undoubtedly, one of his greatest accomplishments of his presidency was healthcare reform. Many former presidents had tried in various ways to revamp the system that worked for a few and failed many. Health insurance just wasn’t in the grasp for those it was made for…the sick. Those with preexisting were dropped from plans or denied altogether. Insurance companies denied necessary treatments or tests for their own benefit. Premiums were through the roof. Americans had no control over their own care. But then came the change that folks could believe in

with the passage of the Affordable Health Care. Universal healthcare gave many, who far so long didn’t have insurance, insurance for the first time in years. It moved to give quality care to more Americans that were lost in the system. Of course, it was not without controversy, as the plan was not perfect but it was better because it took away some barriers to gaining insurance. It made sure affordable thereby creating a healthier America. Even with its good points and flaws one had to admit it was a lot better than what we had and no one had success reforming it until a president named Barack Obama stepped in. With healthcare made better, President Obama looked to our failing economy and growing debt. Overall Americans were hurting all over by the lack of economic growth. More people were without jobs losing their homes and businesses. Families went from having one generation in a home to multiple just to survive paycheck-to-paycheck. Some were in so much despair and not knowing the answer as to what to do they took their own life s as a way to deal. Help arrived with a president named Barack Obama with the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that stimulated the economy and the creation of jobs. In the first twenty-three months of the plan more that three million new private sector jobs were created according to the Washington Monthly. Another check mark for President Obama came when the troops could finally come home. The war in Iraq was over and by order of the president all troops left in 2011. Military families could begin to untie those many yellow ribbons from around the old oak tree because their men

FEATURE CONT. and women were home, a little battered and worn but not discouraged or without hope and pride for their country. America embraced troops by appreciating them with an increase in needed support for physical and mental health programs, tuition assistance tax credits, jobs and housing all because of president named Barack Obama. Still at the top of President Obama’s to-do list was America’s number one enemy Osama bin Laden. Just slipping out the grasp of America’s hands for years, President Obama and America were now more determined than ever to get their man. Planning, tracking, and tactics were used until a trap was set. Then a president named Barack Obama gave the final command for action. In the dead of night, America’s best, special forces called Navy Seals, stormed a secret compound in Pakistan and eliminated Osama bin Laden and others. Victory was America’s. A long list of victories came for all Americans with a president named Barack Obama. Big businesses were rescued with federal money. The auto industry was turned around

the U.S. embassy in Havana and the Cuban embassy in Washington among other agreement conditions. Change was sweeping America and the world. President Obama checked and checked his list off one-by-one knowing with every check he made there was still a lot more work to be done. But not without opposition and numerous challenges. From the legitimacy of his birth certificate to the out right disrespect treatment of him as a man and leader with the authority given him for the position he holds for the highest office in the land because of the color of the skin. President Obama took a beaten in Washington but appeared to always keep his cool and calm. Time-to-time we did see nostrils flare, hear an elevation in his voice, see the stern look in his eyes but he did it while still keeping his composure and press on to keep America moving. He kept it presidential. He had many cheering for his success and even more rooting for his failure. Personally, as an American he made me feel safe and hopeful and as an African American he made me proud. Mr. President, you did an amazing, superior job of remaking America into a better union. Thank you is also extended to you and your family for changing the mirror image of Black America. Besides giving young black girls and boys hope to achieve the impossible, the Obamas changed the way America looks at

His first lady was not the angry black woman but is the woman who wanted children to eat healthy and get moving and support military families. Their girls were not ones looking for trouble but are ones seeking new

opportunities to garner success. Together they are an uncontrollable power that can’t be stopped and apart they are a force to be reckoned with. The Obamas are just that bad. Now with a head that is far grayer than when he first took office, his swagger still in effect, his smile still genuine and his heart still with a billion in federal money that allowed the hopeful we prepare to say farewell to a President creation of hundreds of jobs. omebody passed you a plate of cookies. It was the holidays so, of course, you had to take one. Or three, because they were good; and when the fudge came around, you had that, too. And some pie, cheesecake, punch, homemade candy, now your pants are tight, you feel lazy, and your bathroom scale is screaming. Yep, it’s time to step back and step toward “Lose Your Final 15” by Rovenia M. Brock, PhD. When she was just 9 years old, growing up in Washington, DC, Rovenia Brock had a dual life-changing experience: she lost her mother to cancer and she met her mother’s friend, a dietitian who taught Brock the “relationship between diet and health.” Remembering the woman’s words, Brock went to college to be a “nutrition educator” but, like many women of color, she “worried that men wouldn’t find me attractive unless I put a little more meat on my bones.” That was unhealthy and she knew it, so she created her Final 15 program. To begin, take the “Self-Assessment Test” and put yourself in the “F-15 Mindset.” This will help you make better choices when faced with cravings. Also, remember that some hunger is emotional, and that you can understand the difference. In the planning phase of the Final 15, Brock recommends that you eliminate sugar, sodas, and alcohol. Eat breakfast early, and then “eat often.” Get lots of sleep, and “take special care” if you’re a nightshift worker. Understand that buying dairy products, vegetables, fruits, and fish is not merely a matter of going to the grocery store. Phase 1 teaches readers the basics of eating and exercise. Phase 2 adds more choices to both. Phase

ith the rapid approach of the new year, the due date for Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame voting ballots is also right around the corner. The Baseball Bagwell Writers Association of America has until December 31st to submit their ballots, which will announce the newest elected members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. 3 of the Final 15 diet is the “Coast and Maintain” phase for lifelong health, but that doesn’t mean letting your guard down. “You can’t declare victory,” Brock says, “and then return to your old habits.” Those last fifteen pounds, as they say, are the hardest to lose when you’re dieting. But “Lose Your Final 15” helps the first pounds go, the last pounds go, and every ounce in between. It won’t be easy, but author Rovenia M. Brock offers step-by-step handholding and useful advice, as well as fat-burner exercises. There are lots of charts inside this book, but nothing too scientific; you’ll also find simple recipes that don’t require a Food PhD to make. For a little added encouragement, “Dr. Ro” includes success stories from people who’ve shed their poundage and kept it off. Readers, however, should know that some chapter sub-headings may seem misleading: you shouldn’t, for instance, “Drink Half Your Body Weight in Water,” but you should read the section. The actual page on eating snacks “That Are No Larger Than Your Closed Fist” has more succinct meaning. Read. Carefully. You might read a little repetition while you do, but it will underscore what’s inside this book. If those holiday cookies went from lips to hips and you’re walking them off now, “Lose Your Final 15” is a book you shouldn’t walk past. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

The Hitchcock Red Raider Youth Football Freshmen team, composed of 5 and 6-year-olds, had a perfect 11-0 season ranking them the second best team in Texas. This honor has earned them a coveted spot in the BCS National Championship Tournament of Champions in Orlando. The team with their supporters has been furiously raising money, but is still short of their $3,000 goal to cover trip expenses. They are desperately seeking donations to fulfill the need to send the youngsters on their way. If not, the team will have to settle for a regional tournament next weekend in Louisiana. ost people recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle when it comes to physical and emotional well-being, but you may not realize that some health-related activities can pose a safety risk if you don’t take proper precautions. Making safe habits part of your healthy lifestyle can help ensure you’re able to enjoy the results of your efforts. Warm up your workout. Exercise and physical activity are essential to a healthy lifestyle, but failing to approach your workouts with the proper warmup and know-how can really backfire. According to the experts at WebMD, a warmup is important because it gets blood circulating and eases muscles into more vigorous activity, getting them loose, warm and ready for the challenge. Know that technique matters. Another potential safety pitfall when it comes to working out is improperly using weight machines or employing improper technique for activities like yoga or core training. Failing to execute your exercises correctly can not only produce sub-par results, you may actually end up hurting yourself by causing a sprain or other injury. Even if you tend to be a loner when it comes to working out, enlist the expertise of a trainer or coach who can show you the ropes before you set out solo. Exercise caution outdoors. A few hours spent in the great outdoors can leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated; fresh air is good for your body and your spirit. However, spending too much time soaking up the sun can have a detrimental impact on your health – overexposure to UV rays is a major risk factor for developing skin cancer. Exposure to the elements, such as strong winds or harsh cold, can also take a toll on your body. The American Melanoma Foundation recommends lathering up with a sunscreen that has a Skin Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 any time you’ll be outdoors for more than 20 minutes. Even winter conditions pose a threat to bare skin, as snow can actually reflect UV radiation. Be wary of expiration dates. Most people

Health and Safety Go Hand-in-Hand at least periodically use prescription drugs or overthe-counter medicines as part of their commitment t o s t a y i n g h e a l t h y. However, for people who rarely use medicines, their cabinets may be filled with potentially dangerous, expired medications. According to the FDA, both prescriptions and over-the-counter meds can lose their effectiveness over time and even become unsafe. Especially concerning are the medicines that can change chemical composition or become a breeding ground for bacteria over an extended period of time. That’s why it’s important to properly discard medicines after their expiration dates have passed. Make reasonable eating choices. With countless diet options available, it may seem impossible to know which is most likely to help you achieve your desired results. When evaluating eating plans, be careful to avoid diets that are excessively restrictive, as these can have a serious impact on bodily organs that rely on nutrients to function. Also be wary of diets that recommend cutting entire food groups; a balanced diet with moderate portion sizes is the best approach for delivering your body the nutrition it needs for top performance. Committing to healthier living is an important step, so be sure you can reap the rewards by making your journey to better health a safe one. Contact Lens Safety Tips With nearly 41 million adults in the U.S. wearing contact lenses as a safe and popular form of vision correction, there is a growing trend among Americans to alter the appearance or color of the eyes by using decorative contact lenses. However, if these lenses are bought illegally and without a prescription from your eye doctor, they could lead to serious health issues and potentially damage your eyesight permanently.

“Many consumers consider these lenses a fashion or costume accessory when, in reality, decorative lenses are also classified as medical devices and still pose the same potential safety and health issues as corrective contact lenses and require a prescription,” said Andrea P. Thau, O.D., president of the American Optometric Association (AOA). The AOA recommends contact lens wearers take proper steps to protect their eyes and maintain a consistent hygiene routine, including: See a doctor of optometry for a comprehensive eye examination and proper fitting and prescription for decorative contacts lenses, even if you don’t require lenses to correct your vision. Never buy lenses from retail outlets or online sites that don’t require a prescription. Always follow the recommended contact lens replacement schedule prescribed by your eye doctor. Wash and dry hands before handling contact lenses. Carefully and regularly use cleaning solution to rub the lenses with fingers and rinse thoroughly before soaking overnight in multi-purpose disinfectant solution. Use fresh solution to clean and store contact lenses – never reuse old solution. Only use products recommended by your eye doctor to clean and disinfect lenses. Saline solution and rewetting drops do not disinfect lenses. Store lenses in the proper storage case and replace your case every three months. In addition, cases should be rubbed with clean fingers, rinsed with solution, dried with a tissue and stored upside-down when not in use. Remove contact lenses before exposing them to water. See your optometrist immediately if you experience redness, pain, irritation or blurred vision while wearing your lenses. AUTO

Oh the Places You Can Go in a 2017 Buick LaCrosse

By Rebecca Briscoe, Feature Writer

I

am officially sold! Buick has made a major comeback with the redesigned 2017 LaCrosse. While hitting the highway in one of GM premiere brands, this vehicle made its own fashion statement for me to be “seen on the scene.” This automobile is the perfect marriage of luxury sleek and sporty chic. Whether you’re picking up the kids from little league practice, enjoying a girls’ weekend, or a romantic night out on the town this “ultimate driving machine” meets the demands for any occasion. In a world when most people think that foreign luxury is the standard driving experience, the 2017 Buick LaCrosse exceeds expectations. The drive is so quiet that it’s intoxicating and the ultra-sleek design is captivating. Just like a fine wine aging over time, the redesigned 2017 Buick LaCrosse exterior curves makes getting behind the wheel simply irresistible. #ThatsABuick

system that let me know right away if someone or something is hidden underneath your vehicle. Other safety amenities include: ten standard air bags – including two knee air bags for front passengers, front pedestrian braking, which alerts drivers to and can automatically apply the brakes for pedestrians detected directly ahead in some driving conditions, adaptive cruise control, rear vision camera, forward collision alert, and safety alert seat when you are too close to another vehicle or pedestrian. Leg Room I wasn’t sold at first, but now I see how Shaq was able to sit comfortably in the Buick Lac\Crosse.

Interior Initially when I think of a Buick, what comes to my mind is the old fashioned, super-sized Buick Roadmaster. (Am I telling my age?) Well honey not this time! As soon as I sat in the driver’s seat of this full-size sedan, the supple jet black leather made a comfort zone on my back, and the wood grain embellishments let me know that everything about this vehicle is first class. The touch screen in the Buick LaCrosse is a dream come true because I was able to make hands free calls, send text messages, and respond to emails with the sound of my voice. Talk about simply amazing! Additional amenities include: audio system with AM/FM radio, CD player (reads MP3 format), digital media card, satellite radio, IntelliLink, steering wheel mounted remote audio controls, eight speakers, antenna, cruise control, and a trip computer: includes average speed, average fuel economy, current fuel economy and range for remaining fuel. I enjoyed the ample legroom and the options to adjust my seat for supreme comfort. Another added feature was that I could program my seat preference with a click of my finger. Surprisingly, there is just as much leg room in the back seat as there is in the front. This vehicle is perfect for family trips or girlfriends getaways where five passengers can sit comfortably without touching one another.

Safety If safety is priority number one, have no fear your newly redesigned Buick LaCrosse is here. Parking is a breeze because of the rear parking assist along with sensors. I really enjoyed the driver assist warnings when another vehicle was too close to my blind spot, the forward collision alert, the lane departure warnings, and even the pedestrian detection

The Coachella 2017 Lineup Is Out: Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar & Radiohead To Headline Hans Zimmer performing means Coachella is sick & tired of playing with other festivals.

T

he Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has emerged as the yearly big bad when it comes to music festivals. The 2017 lineup was announced earlier this morning with headliners Radiohead, Beyoncé & Kendrick Lamar. The lineup also features heavy hitters such as Gucci Mane making his Coachella debut, Lorde making her return and more. The festival will once again take place on two separate weekends from April 14 to 16, and April 21 through 23. All of the action will take place at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California. Coachella 2017 officially marks the year that long-running festival stopped playing with other festivals and let their proverbial nuts

hang. Hans Zimmer, the composer of film scores such as Gladiator, The Dark Knight and more is performing. That, is ridiculous. New Order will be making their second U.S. performance in more than a decade at Coachella 2017. Lorde will be returning to the festival for her first show since November 2014. The Avalanches’, who recently released a new album Wildflower last year will be performing for the first time on U.S. soil in over 15 years. Other acts on the bill include Travis Scott, the xx, Father John Misty, Future Islands, Kaytranada, Future, ScHoolboy Q, Thundercat, Lil Uzi Vert, DJ Khaled, GoldLink & more.

Combatting Concussions in Youth Sports

W

10,000 children playing soccer increased drastically. While the study’s authors from the hospital’s Center for Injury Research and Policy said some of the increase reflects the growing awareness about concussions, there are steps that can be taken to reduce exposure and increase overall player safety.

ith athletes of all ages taking to fields and courts, there are important steps to take in keeping young athletes safe during practice and games.

Data from U.S. Youth Soccer shows that the number of kids playing increased nearly 90 percent – with nearly 3 million children ages 7-17 playing each year – from 1990 to 2014. As soccer has risen in popularity, so has the rate on injuries – especially concussions – according to a Nationwide Children’s Hospital study published recently in “Pediatrics.” The number of youth treated in emergency rooms in the United States due to soccer-related injuries increased by 78 percent over the 25 years covered by the study. While concussions and other “closed-head” injuries accounted for just 7 percent of those injuries, the annual rate of those injuries per

Know Concussion Signs Be aware of concussion symptoms and encourage players to report potential injuries. The first signs of a player potentially suffering from a serious head injury can include: • Headache • Blurry vision • Nausea • Vomiting • Noise or light sensitivity Utilize Available Educational Resources The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recently released the first interactive online course developed to educate soccer coaches on how to teach safer heading techniques. The free, 30-minute course titled “Get aHEAD Safely in Soccer,” which is available at NSCAA.com/heading, illustrates specific techniques, exercises and practice activities that are available for coaches to download or print. For more tips to properly coach young athletes on the fundamentals of heading and other soccer skills, visit nscaa. com.

Practice Proper Technique The U.S Soccer Federation recently ruled that there should be no heading in games or practice for any players age 10 and under and a limited amount of heading for those ages 11-13. It is important that coaches know the correct techniques and have the right educational tools to properly train their players. The fundamental steps include: • Keeping feet shoulder-width apart and knees bent in an athletic position • Tucking the chin and maintaining a stiff neck • Using arms for balance (and to shield opponents) • Concentrating with eyes open and mouth closed • Focusing on striking the ball with the middle of the forehead Understand Return-to-Play Protocol Coaches and parents should encourage players to always report blows to the head and be vigilant in looking for athletes who may have sustained injuries. If a player does sustain a concussion, they should seek medical attention and work together with an athletic trainer on proper return-to-play protocol before returning to competition. By instituting proper athletic safety measures at the youth level, coaches, parents and athletes can continue to enjoy the positive benefits of sports. Photo courtesy of Getty Images
