COMMENTARY
Trump Is On The Wrong Side Of History By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
T
uesday is “Election Day,” even though most of the votes have already been cast. The voters are facing one big question: Has Donald Trump earned re-election? Should we continue down the path he is taking us? Much of the commentary -- and many of the stump speeches -- focuses on Trump personally -- his character, his corruption, his lies, his ugly rhetoric. How he behaves is important, for the president is the great teacher, for better or for worse. Trump is not exactly the role model you want for your children. More telling, however, is what Trump has done -- or not done -- as president. Here the failures are many, serious and utterly disqualifying. Trump’s campaign poster says, “Keep America Great Again,” as if he had succeeded in his first term to make it great. That assumption is reflected in his promise for his second term: more of the same. The Republican Party didn’t even bother to pass a platform at the national convention. When asked his plans, Trump simply says that he’ll keep doing what he’s been doing. He says he wouldn’t change a thing about how he has handled the pandemic. Think about that. This is Trump’s America: the most unemployed since the Great Depression, millions on the verge of eviction or foreclosure; more than 228,000 dead with the virus spiking to new heights in states across the country, the worst death toll per capita in the world, made far worse by the catastrophic failure of leadership or management by the Trump administration. Large areas of the country savaged by extreme weather caused by the climate change

that the president scorns as a hoax. Record demonstrations across the country demanding justice and police reform, even as the president fans the flames of hate. This is not a record that deserves another term One of Trump’s campaign slogans is “Promises made, promises kept,” but that too is a lie. He said he would “clean the swamp” in a Washington infested with private lobbies and special interests. Instead he’s presided over a predator’s ball, weakening the civil service, and inviting the lobbyists to feast on a pay-toplay administration. He promised to end the endless wars -- a promise I agreed with -- but the wars go on despite the bluster. He promised a manufacturing revival, but America has lost manufacturing jobs on his watch. He promised his tax cuts would benefit working people. In fact, the rich made out like bandits, and inequality, already extreme, has gotten much worse. He promised a long overdue infrastructure program and never produced it. He promised a health care plan that would be cheaper and better than Obamacare and never produced it. He inherited a growing economy and has left it in shambles. His mismanagement of the pandemic has been disastrous for working people and the economy. Mocking masks and social distancing, claiming that the virus would “magically” disappear, he not only cost lives, he helped crater the economy when his magical thinking proved wrong. Then he failed abjectly to get his fellow Republicans to do what is vital to sustain working families in the pandemic. He joined with Senate

Republican leader Mitch McConnell to sabotage the House rescue bill that was passed months ago that would have sustained unemployment aid to those whose jobs are shut down. He didn’t provide adequate aid to small businesses and schools to pay for the safety measures required to start up. His administration never put forth clear rules about health and safety on the job that would protect essential workers. And even more ominously, Trump is acting in ways that will undermine our future. The failure of common sense about the pandemic will cost thousands more lives and impede any economic recovery. His opposition to support for states and localities -- that suffer a collapse in revenue, even as the pandemic causes soaring costs -- will force the layoff of workers and cutback in services that will deepen the recession. His denial of climate change and systematic rollback of environmental protections condemns the next generation to a hellish struggle against the elements. His relentless efforts to discredit this election, and his party’s commitment to voter suppression, to impede even

the counting of the votes, to curtail a complete census count are undermining the faith in our very democracy. Dr. King taught that the arc of history is long but it bends toward justice. On the economy, on health, on climate, on race, on democracy, on inequality, Donald Trump is on the wrong side of history and heading backward. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and the majority coalition that they are building are calling America forward. Trump says that he “takes no responsibility” and campaigns as if he had not been president over the past four years. On Tuesday, Americans can ensure that he isn’t for the next four years. Emancipation Park Conservancy and Comcast Partner to Launch FREE Economic Empowerment Tech Program
Lucy Bremond – Executive Director Emancipation Park Conservancy
E
mancipation Park Conservancy and Comcast today announced a $10,000 Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation grant to launch the Economic Empowerment Small Business & Entrepreneur Technology Training Program. The program seeks to empower the Third Ward community and surrounding areas by providing technology, education sessions and corresponding resources as it works collaboratively with its strategic partner, Emancipation Economic Development Council. Through this technology training, small businesses and entrepreneurs will learn how to use technology to effectively brand and market their business online; conduct online sales and e-commerce; and navigate their online taxes and accounting software for successful business management. In the Spring of 2021, a smaller, more intimate group of participants will receive two technology-specific, hands-on training incentives that will help them use and navigate online financial tools such as Excel and QuickBooks and will teach them how to track sales on the website and analytics. “Strategic partnerships with companies such as Comcast and Emancipation Economic Development Council are vital to continue providing educational experiences for the community we serve,” said Lucy Bremond, Executive Director of Emancipation Park Conservancy. “Programs that create opportunities for entrepreneurs to train and grow their small businesses are essential to building successful brands. We appreciate Comcast for their financial contribution.” Comcast helps strengthen the communities it serves through various partnerships and outreach efforts, including contributing cash grants, in-kind services, and Public Service Announcements. The company focuses its community investment efforts in three important areas – volunteerism, technology, and development. “Comcast is committed to enriching our communities,” said Michael Bybee, External Communications Di-
Michael Bybee – External Commincations Director of Comcast Houston Region rector of Comcast’s Houston Region. “We’re excited about partnering with Emancipation Park Conservancy, and this grant speaks to our commitment to the communities where our customers and employees live and work.” About Emancipation Park Conservancy Emancipation Park was founded in 1872 by formerly enslaved African Americans led by Reverend Jack Yates, Richard Allen, Richard Brock, and Reverend Elias Dibble. These men, along with members of the Third and Fourth Ward communities, gathered $800 to purchase the ten acres of land and celebrate their freedom. In 2013, the park underwent a $33.6 million renovation and later reopened in June 2017. Several public private partnerships, and the community worked to revitalize the greenspace to allow for more economic and sustainable opportunities. Emancipation Park Conservancy, a non-profit 501c3 charitable corporation, was established in 2014 to restore, manage, and enhance Emancipation Park. CHRIS HOLLINS: Defender Of The Rights Of Harris County Citizens To Vote By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
P
roper preparation warrants productive possibilities. When Chris Hollins assumed the office of Harris County Clerk, after a 3-2 party vote of the Harris County Commissioners Court, he had three priorities in mind. His goal was to ensure that every resident of Harris County, regardless of party, race, creed, religion, or area of town in which they live, could vote in a safe, peaceful and convenient manner. Having shattered all previous Harris County voting turnout records, Hollins has blown even his own mind with Election 2020. It seems as if this role was designed just Hollins just at this time. Except for a White House internship during the Barack Obama administration, Hollins has had no prior political experience yet he maneuvered in this position with an unwavering determination and confidence that he would excel. No matter the obstacle Hollins was undeterred in his goal of in giving every Harris County resident, who was eligible, a safe, peaceful, and convenient process. Hollins was appointed as the Harris County Clerk in May 2020 by a 3-2 party vote of the Harris County Commissioners’ Court when Diane Trautman resigned due to health-related issues. Once he took the oath of office, Hollins became the youngest and first African American to hold the position. The July Primary Runoff was quickly approaching so Hollins had to jump right in performing the duties of his new position, which meant he had to be ready on day one. A presidential election is in itself a highly watched election with high participation. However, due to the tremulous tenure of Donald Trump in
Chris Hollins – Harris County District Clerk 2020 the White House voter turnout was expected to be in unprecedented numbers and estimates still didn’t capture what the numbers actually were. With Harris County being the second largest with residents Hollins knew he had a monumental task before him. Far greater than only past hiccups was the fact that we are in the middle of a global pandemic, which has gripped the country in fear with rising death tolls and highly contagious nature. Since voters were fearful of coming to polling locations and the increase in voter turnout could lead to long lines and wait times it would be best to remove that obstacle. Hollins’ solution was to send the more than two million eligible Harris County voters a mail-in ballot application whether they requested it on not. Easier said than done since the state of Texas fought against the saying Hollins was acting outside his legal authority and the action would cause confusion among voters. Hollins, an attorney himself, countered their argument saying instructions were clear and absentee voting was a safe option for voters. Hollins won the lawsuit in lower tier courts only to lose his case in the state’s highest civil court.
The state of Texas sued in August to block Hollins from mailing out the applications, arguing that doing so exceeded his legal authority and would cause confusion among voters, some of whom are not eligible for absentee ballots under Texas’ unusually strict criteria. But Hollins argued that the planned mailers gave clear guidance on eligibility and that encouraging absentee ballots where appropriate was integral to holding a safe election during the pandemic. Lower courts with Democratic judges took Harris County’s side, ruling that Hollins could send applications to voters who would otherwise have to request them or find them online. Applications were only sent to voters 65 years-old and up, who qualified for absentee ballots. Hollins called the ruling disappointing in that the court sided with “political forces” to limit voter accessibility. Following this case came numerous others as Republicans used their collective energy to fight all efforts to expand voter access claiming it left opportunities for fraud and other problems. Despite the hurdles, Hollins was able to expand voter options for Harris T:5" County to ensure the safety and conve-
nience of the election. Polling locations were available in each area of town with tons of photo booths. He tripled the number of locations in comparison to previous years. He piloted drive-thru polling locations and 24-hour polling locations. He ensured polling locations were equipped with cleaning supplies, PPEs, and everything needed by poll workers, voters, and volunteers. He instituted new safety protocols in line with CDC guidelines. The attention to safety allowed voters to feel protected when casting their vote resulting in record-breaking numbers at the polls. The first day of early voting saw over 125,000 voters. Over one million voters were chronicled for the first week of early voting. Altogether more than 2 million voted during early voting. Some voters whizzed through polling locations while others had to pack their patience and wait for hours. Voters were just as determined to cast their vote, as Hollins was to keep them safe. Hollins has said the right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. He protected that right with a vigilant effort to which Harris County is indebted to him for. Now that the process of the election is behind him, Hollins will finish up logging residents’ important documents as the Chief Record Keeper for the county. He is looking forward to having some quality time with his wife, Morgan, and their two children, three-year-old Vivian and newborn George Thomas. He plans to return to his lucrative law practice and will not seek to run for any political office, at least not now. Hollins hasn’t closed the door on a possible public servant run in the future. Hollins is a product of Fort Bend ISD schools holding degrees from Morehouse College, Harvard Business School, and Yale School of Law. He used his background in management consulting to efficiently run the Harris County Clerk’s office.
Houston Style Magazine congratulates Chris Hollins on a job well done!

Inspiration of Ivy Park Her kids inspired the new look of Ivy Park during the pandemic. The fam had “Fashion Fridays” where they created their own fashion photo shoots while stuck in the house. On losing and forgetting things: “I’m always losing my phone in my house or office, and I never know where my keys are,” she said. “My phone is always dead. I get days and dates confused all the time, but guaranteed, I’ll remember every detail of a conversation, what you were wearing or how your hair was styled.”
