or the residents of Flint, Mich., the water crisis continues. Their governor and President Obama have declared states of emergency. Congress is holding hearings. Presidential candidates are doing tours and debates. Free filters are being handed out. Resident can pick up bottled water. The city has gone back to water coming out of Lake Huron rather than the Flint River. But for parents, the fears remain -- and almost nothing has been done. They will join in a March on Flint on February 19 to demand action at the national and state level. Flint residents don’t know if the filters work. They don’t know if they should bathe in the water or use it to wash clothes. Almost all the children in Flint under age 6 have been exposed to elevated levels of lead in the water. And the water still isn’t safe. Flint, already impoverished before the calamity, has been devastated.

POLITICAL By Burt

Starve Government, and You Get Disasters Like Flint’s People don’t know whether to trust eating in restaurants. Universities are finding it hard to recruit students. Businesses aren’t about to move into Flint. Even before the crisis, Flint had 11,000 vacant lots and 10,000 abandoned homes, according to the Washington Post. The population has fallen by more than half since 1960, as General Motors shipped jobs away. Forty percent of the city’s population is below the poverty line. The average household income is about $25,000, less than half that of typical U.S. household. Now, the 30,000 homes that are occupied have lost virtually all their value. Who would buy a house where the water is not safe? Mayor Karen Weaver estimates it will cost $45 million to replace the lead service lines to 15,000 homes in Flint, according to the Post. Mona Hanna Attisha, the pediatrician who helped exposed the lead poisoning in children, estimates it will cost $100 million to combat the potential effects. Overhauling the Flint water distribution system will cost an estimated $1 billion. No one knows where the money will come from. The president’s state of emergency freed up a few million federal dollars in short-term assistance. State and private donations have added up to $28 million, but a good portion of that has to repay Flint residents for the water bills they are paying when they

can’t use the water. For the residents of Flint, this is a disaster. The damage suffered is like getting hit by a hurricane like Katrina. The federal government should declare it a national disaster and mandate action. Congress should step up and appropriate emergency funds. Flint residents may be disproportionately older, poorer and black -- but they are part of this country. The national disaster has hit Flint but it is already coming to other communities. Lead pipes were banned 30 years ago, but there are an estimated 3.3 to 10 million still in service, according to the New York Times. EPA’s trigger level for action -15 parts of lead in a billion -- is arbitrary, set not on the basis of a health standard, but so 90 percent of homes fall below it. And EPA’s annual budget for safe drinking water has fallen 15 percent since 2002, with 10 percent of its staff lost. In 2013, 17 states cut their drinking water budgets by more than a fifth. One-third of Americans get drinking water from wetlands and tributaries not yet superintended by EPA. When the Agency sought to issue a rule, reports the Times, the Republicancontrolled Congress passed legislation to overturn it and two dozen states sued to stop it, worried that it would hurt business. The Guardian reports that its inside sources suggest that in “every major U.S. city east of the Mississippi,”

water authorities “systematically distort water tests” to downplay the levels of lead in the water. At $5,000 a pipe, according to the Times, it is estimated that it would cost up to $50 billion to get rid of lead pipes servicing homes with water. That’s on top of the $384 billion EPA estimates it will need in deferred maintenance to keep drinking water safe. Yet conservatives keep slashing core budgets in order to keep cutting top end taxes. The problem with making government so small that you can “drown it in a bathtub” -- conservative lobbyist Grover Norquist’s famous quip -- is that you’ll end up like Flint, with your children drinking and bathing with poisoned water. Clean and safe drinking water isn’t a luxury. It shouldn’t require purchasing bottled water. It should be provided and policed by our government. It should be a basic necessity that we share in providing securely. Flint shows the horror of violating that basic trust. Only Flint is not alone. If we continue to starve basic functions of government, we will see more and more Flints in our future. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. For more information, visit cnn. com

ichel Papillion, a recently retired Houston Police S e r g e a n t w i t h t h r e e decades of command experience, is running in the March 1st Democratic Primary that could make him Harris County Pct. 3’s first African American elected Constable. All because he believes first off that county officers need more “Shoot/Don’t Shoot Training.” “We’ve seen horrifically across this country inside police and minority communities what happens when the local police serving minority communities are not best trained when to use deadly force and when not to use deadly force. I also want the Pct. Constable 3 Office, which serves underserved areas in northeast Harris County, to have an investigative unit that will be created to investigate crime and not just write offense reports,” Papillion said. “Pct. 3 needs the kind of leadership I can provide. My neighborhood oriented approach to law enforcement is one needed not only in Pct. 3, but around this country. We must improve the police and citizen partnerships to have an improved community,” he said. Pappillion pledges that the Pct. 3 Constable’s Office needs

new leadership, a fresh pair of eyes and not simply someone from within the office who will only continue with what the outgoing constable has done. The office needs someone who will evaluate progress and make needed changes to benefit the community. “I respect the decades long leadership of Constable Ken Jones but this county, community

and country has seen a great deal change. I will advocate for mandated i m p r o v e m e n t s i n h o w o ff i c e r s interact with citizens,” he said. Pappillion, a Lake Charles, LA native, moved to east Harris County when he began his career with the Houston Police Department. Before HPD, he worked for the Lake Charles Police Department. “I worked patrol division, narcotics division and vice division. In the Houston Police Department, I am a Certified Bicycle Patrol Officer and have served as a Positive Interaction Program (PIP) coordinating supervisor in the Acres Homes community,” said Pappillion, who is married and the father to a daughter that attends Reagan High School. For the past 23 years, he has supervised various officers working in many areas of the department. He supervised officers and civilian staff in the central jail division, patrol officers working at the north division, southeast division, northeast division, and special operations division. The majority of his professional policing experience has been in a supervisory capacity, interacting directly with citizens. Papillion over the years has received letters from citizens written

www.StyleMagazine.com

to his superiors commending his dedication, compassion, knowledge, courage, and professionalism. He has received letters of commendation from past Police Chiefs of the Houston Police Department and is proud of his hard earned experiences. He is most proud of his Officer of the Year Award given to him for an Act of Valor. “I’ve owned homes in the Sterling Green community and have lived on Burwell Street in Highlands for several years. I am a past president of the Sterling Green Community Improvement Association. Under my leadership, I created the neighborhood police patrol in Sterling Green. This program has been a success and is still doing well for the community. It is that record that I bring to this race and will bring to this office,” he said. Papillion faces eight primary opponents. His focus is getting into the May 24th run-off with one of them. And then he ultimately wants to be in the November general election with whoever is the Republican nominee in this decidedly Democratic Precinct that is anchored in Baytown and travels north to the Lake Houston/Montgomery County border. inety years ago on February 8, 1926, history was made as Jack Yates High School opened its doors to educate students of color. Named after a former slave that later became a very influential man in Houston, hundreds of students have walked the halls to make a name for themselves in Houston and globally. The City of Houston issued a proclamation and Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaimed Feb. 9, 2016 “Jack Yates Senior High School Day.” On site to see the ceremonies were several alumni, adorned in Yates’ signature colors of crimson and gold, courtesy of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and attorney Arva Howard. T

he National Museum of Funeral History is proud to present a new exhibit entitled Honoring Olivewood, featuring a collection of photographs by young Houstonian Kasey French, from now – May 29, 2016. The photographs, taken by French in 2011 when she was only 16 years old, showcase the beauty and reverence of historic Olivewood Cemetery, Houston’s first incorporated A f r i c a n A m e r i c a n c e m e t e r y, which pre-dates the end of slavery. The exhibit will be accompanied by a special “Honoring Olivewood” book featuring French’s photographs. The book will be available for sale in the Museum’s gift shop and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Descendants of Olivewood, a non-profit group organized by volunteers in 2004 to raise funds to restore, preserve and maintain the historic cemetery and sacred space after years of neglect. Olivewood Cemetery, located at 1300 Court Street, in a bend of White Oak Bayou just northwest of Downtown Houston where the First and Sixth Wards intersect, is Houston’s first incorporated African American cemetery and is the final resting place of some of Houston’s first African American citizens. Currently, the cemetery receives only the care of a small group of supporters and is in great need of

additional care and restoration. In the summer of 2011, French visited Olivewood Cemetery as part of a Catholic Youth Service camp. In keeping with the camp’s theme that year, “cherish and revere life,” the youth group visited several Houston popular volunteer spots, including the historic cemetery and the Houston Food Bank. So moved by the intense labor needed to clear overgrown tropical vegetation and trash from Olivewood, French picked the historic cemetery, which she calls “this Holy ground,” as her project. While most teens would have a finite end to volunteer projects,

Feb 11 - Feb 17, 2016

that wasn’t the case for French, who is now 21 years old and a public relations student at the University of Texas in Austin. For the past five years, French has continued to support Olivewood Cemetery, keeping in regular contact with the Descendants of Olivewood, including Margott Williams and Charles Cook, the co-presidents of the organization. Meeting Williams, Cook and their team of dedicated volunteers greatly inspired French. She adopted their drive and passion and provided her own solution to illuminating the neglect of the cemetery. It was only natural for

www.StyleMagazine.com

French to combine her hobby of photography with her desire to help people and ultimately tell the story of Olivewood through her photographs. “I wanted my photos to serve as a sort of time capsule for the cemetery, capturing a sliver of history and documenting what Olivewood looked like at that moment in time,” French said. “I also wanted to make people realize how beautiful life is. Something may seem so small to one person and yet it is huge to another person. It’s important for everyone to see the importance of Olivewood.” From decaying headstones and overgrown vegetation to damage from standing water, erosion and crumbling fences, French hopes her photographs exude a sense of serenity and peace, while inspiring and motivating others to help the Descendants of Olivewood group with their mission to restore the historic site. Additionally, Genevieve Keeney, president of the National Museum of Funeral History, encourages visitors to pay careful attention to the names of each photograph, as “they hold a deeper meaning than first meets the eye.” Read the full story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW

Beating the Workplace Bully: A Tactical Guide to Taking Charge

ometimes, you feel like you’re back in Sixth Grade. But you’re not – you’re at work, dealing with the same kind of bully you faced in the schoolyard. It’s just as frustrating now as it was then, but what can you do? You don’t have a teacher to run to, so read “Beating the Workplace Bully” by Lynne Curry instead. Once you graduated from high school, you figured you were done with those thugs who ruled the playground. But, says Curry, “Bullies and targets exist at all levels and in many organizations” and she can help the latter deal with the former. So what can you do when you’re on the receiving end of a workplace bully? First, Curry says, remember that, though “no one deserves to be bullied,” it’s “epidemic.” Ninetysix percent of respondents to a 2014 poll reported problems of bullying at work. It’s wise, therefore, to know why you’re a part of that majority. Next, understand that problems with coworkers don’t just “go away.” If there’s bully in the next cubicle, strive to break old habits and diffuse what’s making you a target. Know what kind of bully you’re dealing with, expand your comfort zone to prepare yourself for what needs to be done, and learn how to empower yourself and “confront confrontation” without stooping to a bully’s level. Stop playing the bully’s game by recognizing the eight “most common bully traps” and the tactics s/he uses to get under your skin. Don’t let your tormenter have any space in your brain; try to remain calm, neutral, and don’t get angry! Learn the power of the word “REALLY?” Be willing to take notes, note witnesses, and document, document, document.

If you notice that colleagues are also having issues with this particular bully, enlist allies and ask for reinforcements. And finally, if you’re the boss with a bully on your staff, know how to handle what could become a very thorny situation for you and your business. Above all, remember: “don’t play nice – you can’t afford it.” Oh, how I wish I’d had a book like “Beating the Workplace Bully” back when I needed it! I’m sure it would’ve saved a lot of sleepless nights, jobjumping, and productivity loss, because author Lynne Curry’s advice is solid and straightforward without being rash or antagonizing. And that, as you’ll see here, is exactly what you need to deal with this alltoo-common problem. Curry teaches a certain kind of stand-up-foryourself Zen in this book, starting with basic handholding and moving on to what amounts to guerilla tactics with a lace glove. She also offers a series of quizzes at the end of each chapter, to help readers determine where they sit and what’s next. I found those particularly helpful, and I loved reading the case-studies that accompany each chapter and point. This is one of those books that you won’t regret having on your shelf, even if you don’t need it right now because when you do, “Beating the Workplace Bully” will have you well-schooled. FEATURE

Love and Its Many Defining Ways To Turn Us Upside Down

By Demez White, Feature Writer

W

hat is love? Although Webster ’s Dictionary has managed to give it a definition, love is not all that cut and dry because there are so many different types. Love is not always butterfly kisses, roses and sunshine. Love can dark filled with rages and tears. Love can be singular when you value and respect yourself to point that you are in love with yourself. Love, at least to me, is best when it is plural. It’s nice when you love someone who has cared for you since birth pouring every once of their being in you for your success. Its needed when it finds itself in the person who becomes your secret keeper, you’re ready for every situation point of contact, your ride or die. It’s amazing when it is sacrificed, more than you knew, sleepless and wrapped in a tiny bundle. Its simply indescribable when it is finds its way to the person that there are no boundaries for, that makes you be your best self, that defines what love really, that becomes your soul mate. Though love has these various complex yet simple meaning it seems on Valentine’s Day that one type of love is honored; that between two kindred spirits. And since I tend 10

to be a romantic, that type of love is the one I am most fond of for my belief in it. I believe in love because I believe in men and women. I believe that most of us are good people at our core; we just want to be happy and to have someone hold us down. Someone to care if we don’t come home at the usual time or if they go a day without talking to us. I believe in love because I know the feeling of wanting more than anything just to hear a voice or to touch a hand or a lip or a fingertip. I know what it’s like to want to see someone so bad that you’ll leave work early just for twenty minutes of small talk and a hug goodbye. To me love is so perfect and so worth writing about and if I need something to believe in, why not love? A broken heart only has the weight it has because before it was broken. It was filled with love and hope and passion! Love isn’t all roses and chocolates and John Legend on repeat, love is bigger than that, it’s a mindset, a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING! It is this type of love that made me fall in love with words and compiling them in a way to evoke

Feb 11 - Feb 17, 2016

love, feel love, and know love. And it sparked me to love to write. Do you all want to know why I believe in my writing? Why I believe in the words I write? It’s because I believe in love. I have no fear of expressing my thoughts because we only get one life and one voice and if I can use mine championing passion and romance and love then I’ve lived one hell of a life. Every text I get, every phone call, every inbox message or Instagram post; Before I read it I wonder is it going to be the message, the words that make me fall in love all over again? It’s a high I’m chasing and finding it just makes me want to chase it all over again. I really feel sorry for people that have given up on the idea of finding someone that will love them above all else. I am who I am; I have a big personality and a big voice. High expectations and even higher standards. I only expect those things because I’m willing to give them! I believe in love because I believe in romantic Facebook pictures at 2am. I believe in love because I believe in picking her up from work just because it’s raining and taking

her to work because we had to leave her car there. Those are moments that love created, that we created because of that love. To say I miss all that is an understatement. I’m not built to be single because I look at every woman like she’s the only one I’ve ever seen and in this day and age that’s ridiculous. I can’t change who I am, I don’t regret the broken hearts or the foolishness because without it I wouldn’t have my foundation. I happy to say on this Valentine’s Day I know the kind of love of which I write. It found me, ironically enough, on Valentine’s Day. I’m not sure how that happened other than the fact that I knew I wanted to celebrate this woman coming into my world on the day dedicated to love. And she the same. Knowing what I know about love, coupled with the various definitions of love and then topping it with the love I know today makes love so dope. So this Valentine’s Day however love has found its way to your heart celebrate it to the extreme because love, that someone and you deserve it. Happy Valentine’s Day! Houston Home Cook Joins Food Network’s All-Star Academy By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

S

unday, February 14th Season Two of All-Star Academy will feature Houston’s Anna Cooper, who is competing against eight other home cooks for a grand prize of $50,000.00. The contestants are mentored by Professional Chefs Alex Guarnaschelli, Curtis Stone, Robert Irvine, and Andrew Zimmern and the premiere episode starts at 9 pm central time. Throughout the season the guides take the competitors through ‘intense kitchen challenges and teach them to cook like pros. The dishes are judged by different guests who are experts in the culinary arts such as: Duff Goldman, Geoffrey Zakarian, and Aaron Sanchez. At the end of each weekly episode a student is eliminated until, there is only one left and awarded the cash prize. Team Style wishes all the contestants well, but we are rooting for our “home girl” Anna Cooper to take home the whole enchilada. She is a passionate home cook who shares her enthusiasm and love of the culinary craft regularly on social media. In fact, by sharing photos of some of the dishes on Instagram, she got the attention of a representative of the show who encouraged her to audition. M o r e o v e r, C o o p e r brings into the arena a unique cultural experience of living in Paris France for a year where she merged her Texas Gulf Coast style with some French cooking techniques that she learned, which has helped her Anna Cooper become more creative while keeping her dishes simple. Additionally, Anna mentioned that not only is she passionate about food and cooking, she also feels a sense of control while in the kitchen. However, while in the midst of competition, Cooper said that it was an “emotional roller coaster” due to the time constraints, getting familiar with a different kitchen, and naturally she felt nervous at times and then relief when a dish was completed. Furthermore, Cooper states that her cast mates are supportive of each other and are genuine in their comradery, although only one of them is going to take home the big prize. Win or lose, Anna plans on expanding her culinary skills, which may lead her to cooking school or more competitions on The Food Network. She also shares her love of food on her blog: www.thesaltedbelle.com. Check out the photos and read about her cooking journey. Follow her on Twitter and instagram : @AnnaDCooper . Airfare is Finally Getting Cheaper

T

he average price for domestic airfare dropped 6.2% to $372 in the third quarter of 2015 from 2014, according to the Department of Transportation. That’s the cheapest since 2010. Fliers can thank the expansion of low-cost airlines and the plunge in oil prices for the drop in ticket prices. The major airlines are being forced to reduce their fares to compete with Spirit and Frontier. “On some routes, they are matching prices dollar for dollar so we are seeing fares 50% lower than a few years ago,” said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com. Oil’s continued plunge has also been a boon for airlines. For more information, visit www.cnn.com.
