It’s Time to Address the Threat of Boko Haram
COMMENTARY
Jesse Jackson
National Writer
W
hen terrorists murdered 17 people in Paris in January, President Obama was harshly criticized for not traveling to the memorial ceremony. When ISIS in Iraq and Syria beheaded three Americans, the U.S. responded immediately, launching air strikes and coordinating Iraqi, Kurdish and Syrian resistance to the terrorist menace. The horrors received wall-towall 24/7 press coverage. Yet when Boko Haram terrorists slaughtered 2,000 people in Baga, in the northeastern state of Borno in Nigeria this January, far less attention was paid. This is in part because the Boko Haram leadership chooses to operate largely below the global news glare. It is in part because Nigerian officials do not like to advertise the scope of the threat. But in large part, it is because Nigeria is in

Africa, not Europe or the Middle East. In this new world, there are no more foreigners. Communications are dwarfed by speed and time. Yet few reporters are on the Africa beat; Americans are less interested; the terrorists, however violent, don’t seem to be a threat to the U.S. The deaths somehow don’t matter as much. Remember, bin Laden and al-Qaida first hit Kenya and Tanzania, then New York. The price we pay for ignoring Africa is costly. We must pay attention. Nigeria has the largest population of any country in Africa. It is a major oil producing nation. It is an ethnic melange with over 350 ethnic groups and 250 languages. Seventy percent of its population lives on $1.25 a day. In the Muslim north, nearly three in four live in poverty. In the Christian South, that is one in four. Ethnic tensions, inequality and corruption have bred a violent response. Boko Haram, founded in 2002, began in 2009 to build an Islamic state, similar to the ISIS project. The name itself, according to the Council on Foreign Relations, is loosely translated as “Western education is a sin.”
ouston City Council Member Michael Kubosh’s campaign this year is to improve the city’s myriad of waterways by pushing to have removed abandoned vehicles that have been found submerged in every area, hampering the environment, law enforcement and water recreation. “Our bayous have a big problem. I’m a big guy and I want action taken,” the first term at large council
4
But the U.S. and its allies have a real stake in keeping Boko Haram from using terrorist violence to consolidate a quasi-state in much of Nigeria. This year, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has backed the African Union proposal to build a regional force to counter Boko Haram. The US would be well advised to help facilitate that process and backstop it with the necessary aid and intelligence. Terrorist slaughter of innocents is as objectionable when the victims are African as when they are French or American. The threat posed by terrorists seeking to consolidate warlord states in oil-producing countries is as real in Africa as in the Middle East. It is long past time for the West to turn attention -- humanitarian, media, multinational -- to the horrors now building in Nigeria. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

Like ISIS, its forces also rely on terrorizing the population, kidnapping children and slaughtering civilians. The Council on Foreign Relations estimates that it has killed over 11,000 in Nigeria, and displaced 1.5 million, making it as savage as ISIS, if not worse. Intelligence reports suggest that it has ties to al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb. The Nigerian government is reeling from the assault. Seventy percent of its budget comes from oil sales. With the price of oil plummeting, the government has been hit hard. Its beleaguered military already suffers from spotty pay, poor equipment and frequent mutinies. Its defense budget is under $2 billion a year. Boko Haram threatens to destabilize Nigeria and threatens its Chad, Niger and Cameroon also. It is linked to al-Qaida networks, openly anti-Western and criminally vicious. President Obama pledged to the UN General Assembly in 2013, “Even when America’s core interests are not directly threatened, we stand ready to do our part to prevent mass atrocities and protect basic human rights.” America can’t police the world.
member said at the January 29th meeting of the Houston Realty Business Coalition. In 2012, while Tim Miller of Texas EquuSearch was looking for a missing elderly woman, the search led to Houston bayous where a sonar scan revealed 127 vehicles in Sims, Braes and Buffalo Bayous. “This past fall it came to my attention that Miller never told council

about this discovery. I called him for a briefing. We met Isiah Carey on Sims Bayou banks. There are now plans to remove as many vehicles as can be removed but EquuSearch needs donations to make it happen,” said Kubosh, who earned city-wide acclaim for his efforts that placed a proposition on the ballot, led to the proposition passing and the removal of red light cameras. “An offshore construction company, Legacy Offshore, LLC, will provide a barge and crane with highly skilled and motivated divers. Under the direction of EquuSearch, the crane will lift vehicles and place them on plastic on the bayou’s banks. HPD will then determine if the vehicle contains criminal evidence. Vehicles in bayous create pollution problems, pose danger to those using the bayou for recreation and act are a hiding place for criminals to dump evidence,” he said. Kubosh continued to explain Miller and his organization will help with removal of the vehicles and provide another sonar scan of the entire water system to determine how many additional vehicles may be in the bayous. Miller said his dive team is ready to remove the vehicles from Houston waterways as has been done in Chicago but community and business

support is needed. “The estimated cost of removing the vehicles from the bayou is projected from $150,000 to $500,000. We’re accepting tax deductible donations payable to Texas EquuSearch for a special vehicle removal fund. Donations can be sent to PO Box 395 Dickinson, Texas 77539,” he said. Mayor Annise Parker is now onboard saying, “If we can have the private sector step up I’m absolutely for it.” Miller provided, “You and I both know there are going to be some bodies in some of these cars.” Kubosh said he and Miller secured support of several agencies to start removing vehicles and noted HPD requested to be on site to examine cars pulled from the water for potential evidence. Last May, Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland said he did not support removal of the vehicles. He cited concerns about safety and manpower but now he says he won’t stand in the way of the project. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

t seems one man can make a difference. KPRC 2 first reported the story of the Kenny “Lunch Angel Thompson whose mission was to eliminated the debt of students’ lunch accounts that were eating alternative lunches. Thompson was using his own money to fund his mission. His generosity went viral and Thompson began receiving donations for his cause from all over the world. He received so much money that he started a nonprofit. Now Thompson has been able to help students in seven different districts to help over 150,000 students in 141 schools. Saying the results have surprised Thompson is an understatement. His nonprofit, Feed the Future Forward just celebrated its first anniversary. Congresswoman
Sheila Jackson Lee:
A Torch Bearer for Justice
T
he year 1995 was a very good year for the 18th Congressional District. That was the year in which a woman by the name of Sheila Jackson Lee took the oath of office to fight for the needs and concerns of the constituents of the inner-Houston area. Congresswoman Lee picked up the torch for justice and has been running with it for the past 20 years. A reception of appreciation and celebration as well as to wish her very Happy Birthday was held in her honor on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at the University Museum on the campus of Texas Southern University. During her first year as a Congresswoman, Jackson Lee’s colleagues instantly saw the shine of her leadership skills. She was elected President of the Democratic Freshmen Class of the 104th Congress and was appointed as the freshman member of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. From these steps in leadership roles came history-making moves. Congresswoman Lee was the first Black woman to serve as the ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Immigration and Claims. Twenty years later she is still tackling feats that have never been reached before. Just this year Congresswoman Lee became the first woman of either party to lead the prestigious House Judiciary subcommittee on crime, terrorism, homeland security and investigations. She sits on various congressional committees and set forth numerous bills. Most recently she supported the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act as well as the reauthorization of a bill to ensure equal access for minority and economically disadvantaged students to NASA’s education programs. She launched the Dr. Mae Jemison Grant Program to get more women of color interested in space and aeronautics. Congresswoman Jackson Lee is the founder, member, and co-chair of the Congressional Children’s Caucus, the Pakistan Caucus, Afghan Caucus, and the Algerian Caucus. Throughout her tenure, Congresswoman Lee has worked tirelessly to make effective change that has bettered not just the 18th district but also the world. Houston Style Magazine celebrates this distinguish woman of service and looks forward to the history she will make in the future. We know as long as there in breathe in her body and injustice happening that Congresswoman Lee will hold up her torch and press on. Houston Style Magazine loves and salutes your 20 years of service Congresswoman Lee and we hope you had a wonderful birthday!

10 Reasons Why I Believe I’m Falling In Love With You One - I check your Facebook every day. Not really to see who you’re talking to or what guys are saying but just to look at pictures, to see your face. I like seeing your face, seeing your smile. Two - When you call my entire personality changes. I smile more, I don’t get out the truck, I blow off work for twenty minutes, and your voice makes me realize just how much nothing matters more than talking to your pretty self. Three - I love your ambition, I find myself talking about you to strangers just because you’re you. Four - I could care less about having sex with you. Our conversations are enough. The way you stimulate my mind means more than any woman has ever done to me physically. Five - When I write it’s you I see.
E
very year around this time men and women seem to want to get a little closer, their eyes get a little glossier, their hands holder a little tighter. Love filters throughout the air leading up to the most beloved holiday, Valentine’s Day. The time of year when you show that special someone just how much they mean to you. But not everyone is a full on relationship. While they are far from just recently meeting that they are not to the point where they are officially a couple. They are hanging around in the in between stage.
Dating each other is becoming more frequent. They are learning something new about the other each time they connect. Slowly the masks are coming down to reveal their true selves and both parties are loving what they see. Then slowly “like” seems to make a smooth transition to “love.” Signs of love are not always obvious while in the moment. If you are dunce on the subject below are 10 signs that show that you are falling head-over-heels for that someone special.
Six - The things that make me ignore most women - complaining, whining, crying - all those things bring me closer to you. They make me want to spend more time with you. Seven - I watch you sleep, not in a creepy way or Silence of the Lambs way but just in a way that brings me comfort. I wonder what you’re dreaming about. I like pulling you close and having you sink your body into mines. Eight - I have a feeling that when you’re completely into me, it will change my life. Nine - I love your simplistic beauty. Ten – Loyalty - To your friends, to your family, to me. Even though we haven’t known each other for long I love how you’re willing to have my back. I love how you talk to me and see me in a way that makes me feel like you care. I know you care. I’m falling in love with you and I don’t care who knows it. The Case for Loving: The Fight for Interracial Marriage
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
our best friend’s Mom never minds if you make too much noise. She takes you places and gives you snacks, too. She’s a really nice lady. Your best friend’s Dad shows you how to do things, and he makes you laugh. You like spending time at their house. But what if there was a rule somewhere that said they couldn’t be a family? In “The Case for Loving” by Selina Alko, illustrated by Sean Qualls and Selina Alko, there was once such a law, and the reason was black and white. Falling in love was very easy. Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter did that right after they met, and it didn’t take long for them to decide that they wanted to get married and raise a family. But there was one problem: Richard was white. Mildred was “colored.” They didn’t think that was any big deal but in Virginia in 1958, it was illegal for them to get married. Yes, a simple wedding could land them in jail! So Mildred and Richard went to Washington, D.C. and tied the knot there. Family and friends went to the wedding, and everybody was happy. The Lovings “couldn’t wait” to start their new lives back home. Not long after they were back in Virginia, though, the police came in the middle of the night and said that the Lovings’ marriage certificate was no good. They put Richard and Mildred behind bars because their marriage was unlawful – and that “was just awful!” In order to stay out of jail for good, Richard and Mildred had to leave their families and move to another state.
In Washington, D.C. again, the Lovings tried to settle in. Richard got a job. Mildred had three children in “three different shades of milk-chocolate brown.” But the city wasn’t a good place for the Lovings. They missed their families. They weren’t happy so, nine years after that late-night visit by the police, because times had changed, they hired lawyers to fight for the right to live in their beloved Virginia… For any adult who’s too young to remember Loving v. Virginia (or any child who wasn’t born then), “The Case for Loving” is a very informative, eye-opening book. Author Selina Alko says in her notes that, as a Jewish white woman, she finds it “difficult to imagine” that her marriage (to illustrator Sean Qualls, an African American) might’ve been illegal, fifty years ago. Kids might find that notion to be almost “unbelievable,” too, given that they’ve never known a world like one described here. What parents will want to understand, however, is this: for its 4-to-8-year-old target age group – particularly for those on the younger end – this book could be scary, especially the “taken away and locked up in jail” part. For toddlers, that’s the stuff of nightmares, so be warned. Still, if you’re prepared to explain and you keep the youngest audience members in mind, this could be a great read-aloud book. “The Case for Loving” may become one your kids will make noise for.
