P

resident Obama marked the 50th anniversary of Selma by celebrating the ordinary heroes who sacrificed so much to make America better. Noting that nearly 100 members of Congress were in the audience, he urged them to return to Washington to strengthen the Voting Rights Act, weakened by the ill-considered decision of five conservative Supreme Court Justices in Shelby County v. Holder. Today, 50 years after Selma, states are moving once more to make voting harder rather than easier. Reviving the Voting Rights Act is essential, but it is not sufficient. The marchers in Selma were marching not just for the right to vote, but also for jobs and justice. And today, Selma itself reveals how far we have to go. Much attention was rightly paid

nspired to protect and serve our country some Houston area students raised their right hand and swore to defend the US Constitution from all enemies at a joint service military swear-in ceremony at the Houston Rodeo’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day. Thousands of American military supporters and rodeo fans from every racial and ethnic category cheered as students took the Oath of Enlistment with at least 300 other future soldiers, Marines, airmen and Coast Guardsmen representing each branch of the military on Wednesday, March 4th at the ceremonies. “Our recruiting mission is focused on finding the best and brightest young men and women to serve in America’s Navy,” said Naval Recruiting Department Houston’s Commanding Officer Commander Rick Evangelista. “It was exciting to see this many quality young men and women come together and see them - as a team - take their oath to protect our country and serve our community. This is their first step toward living a life we in America’s Armed Forces have appreciated since the US Navy was established October 13th 1775. It is a life of honor, courage and commitment. To see this happen at the Houston Rodeo, which raises funds for students to go to college with an

Selma’s Lesson: The Struggle Continues to the 103-year-old Amelia Boynton Robinson. In 1965, she was a leader in planning the Selma demonstrations, and her home was the site for Dr. Martin Luther King and legislators to gather as they wrote the first draft of the Voting Rights Act. This weekend, 50 years later, she joined President Obama on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, sitting tall in her wheelchair. Yet, her home -- which ought to be a national memorial -- now sits boarded up, joining other vacant and foreclosed homes in her neighborhood. Selma is now 80 percent black. Dallas County, where it sits, suffers the highest unemployment in the state at 10.2 percent. The official figure doesn’t count the many who have simply given up trying to find a job. Downtown Selma has as many boarded up stores as operating ones. USA Today quoted David Garrow, the author of “Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference,” who warned against “reducing history to a photo op.” The focus, he argued, “should be on investment and economic development in places like Selma. The focus should be on what we can do for Selma, not what Selma can do for us.” And of course, it is not just Sel-

ma. African-American unemployment remains at more than twice the level of white unemployment. Only 60 percent of all African American men have a job of any kind, with only one in five African Americans 16-19 employed. We lock up more people -- mostly people of color -- than any other nation in the world. The Justice Department’s investigation of Ferguson, Missouri showed a destructive racial bias still stains our criminal justice system. Our schools in poor communities -- ghettos, barrios and rural areas -- still suffer a savage inequality in resources and capacity. Yes, great progress has been made, and it is important to recognize and remember the courage and costs of those who sacrificed to make America better. But the commemoration must be a call to action. We should be protesting in Selma, not celebrating. The Civil Rights struggle was in some respect a movement that had three parts. The first was ending legal segregation. The second was guaranteeing the right to vote. The third, the one Dr. King knew would be the most difficult, was to guarantee economic justice, equal opportunity and a fair start for all. As Selma shows today, and as the Fergusons across the country demonstrate, that part has yet

to be achieved. President Obama was right. It’s great to see 100 legislators at the demonstration, but we need them to legislate, not demonstrate. We need them to return to Washington and raise the minimum wage. We need a jobs program for young people in urban America. We need to fulfill the easy rhetoric about education as an answer, by investing the most in those who need it the most -- the sons and daughters of the poor and low-wage families. President Obama called out to the young to lead once more: “It is you, the young and fearless at heart, the most diverse and educated generation in our history, who the nation is waiting to follow.” We’ve seen the stirrings in the Black Lives Matter demonstrations across the country. What Selma reminds us is that to make America better will take much more action to demand what could be, and much less acceptance of what is. You can write to the Rev. amazing emphasis on ethnic outreach like the US Navy does, is really something to me that couldn’t have made me more proud,” Evangelista said. US Navy recruiters and new sailors were honored with free tickets to both the rodeo and to the following concert later that evening. Additionally,

they each received free barbecue, ticket books filled with free rides and discounted food coupons and a smile and handshake from thousands attending the ceremony, thanking them for their service. “I was so proud. My father served in the First Gulf War and my

grandfather during the Vietnam War. I even have a relative that was at Pearl Harbor as a young sailor in the US Navy and today he is in his 90s,” said new sailor Jesse Evans from Westbury High School in southwest Houston. “When I raised my right hand, the only thing I could think was how right it felt to join the Navy. There are moments during the recruiting process where you ask yourself ‘Is this the correct choice?’ When veterans from Korea and even World War II came up to me to pat me on the back and share their experiences I knew I made the right decision. It was chilling to me to hear how they contributed to our country and for me to know I’d be following in their traditions,” Evans said. Madison High School’s Sheila Taylor said she knows the Navy’s goal is to hire the best young men and women to help overcome the country’s challenges and work to meet the needs of the country as a whole. “These are tough times for our nation and our Navy throughout the world. I decided a long time ago I wanted to make a difference and this is how I want to do it,” Taylor said. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

ENTERTAINMENT Run All Night: A Must-See Thriller

By Susie

Stillwell, Entertainment Writer

R

un All Night is a high action packed thriller filled with twist and turns. A depart from Liam Neeson’s usual Taken character, he is still thrown into a role of protection with his son played by Joel Kinnaman. Audiences will be drawn in from the first scene into the life of a former mobster turned hit man who has since taken to living his life in the bottle. His old friend played by Ed Harris keeps him connected in memories to the past and they reminisce of the old days. The long-range zoom shots bring you right into the scene with the actors. It’s as though you are on the very streets at the precise moment in time as the action. The car chases, shootouts, police involvement, and the killings by both the police and the hit men were all too real. The excitement and surprise danger that is written into this film keeps you on the edge of your seat with anticipation and exhilaration. Then in comes the real HITMAN played my Common in a very uncommon role. Whoa,

Cast: Ed Harris, Liam Neeson, Joel Kinnaman, Common

what a threat! Common’s intensity adds an entire new dimension to the action, then all of a sudden, he disappears, but he makes his return in such

a shocking dynamic way, you will flinch or jump it is so unexpected. It is a great movie, very well written. Vincent D’Onof-

rio and Nick Nolte were great pivotal characters making the storyline even more intense and exciting. Over all, it is a super movie. I will see it again.

uys lay out their best threads while women pick the perfect look that is a combination of sexy and classy. Hair cut and shave for the guys and beauty shop and nail salon appointments for the ladies. Both shower, brush their teeth, wash their face, and put on the finishing touches for the final touch. Looking just right is a must when going on the perfect date. The same time, care, and energy we all take in tmaking sure to not just look our best but to give our best presentation of ourselves for date is the same attention to detail that Grammy-nominated artist Kem gives for every performance. “I always give the mindset that I am presenting the best that I possible can to the audience. I look at it like I am preparing to go out on a date,” said Kem as he spoke about how he doesn’t take fans for granted. It is just how he shows his love for them. Houston has a chance to make a date with not just Kem but Charlie Wilson and Joe too as the trio stops in Houston for The Forever Charlie tour at Toyota Center this coming Sunday. Old school and new school come together as what Kem calls the champions of black music. Among the three artists they have over 40 years in the music business with Uncle Charlie being the most seasoned. It is surprising that with such talent that Kem does not have a Grammy. He is a singer, songwriter, and producer straight from Detroit, Michigan with musical influences like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, and Prince. He has a sound that is unlike any other. His sounds at times makes you want to snuggle by a fire with someone close or lay back and relax with a glass of Chardonnay. His music is easy on the ears and soothing to the soul. Kem has described his music as spiritual and in essence it is music that saved him. Before Kem was the man he is today he was one that dealt with issues of homelessness, alcohol and drug abuse. Music helped him to release from those ills and connect spiritually to be a better version of himself. “Music was a driving force,” said Kem. “It pulled me through a lot of dark periods of my life.” Kem has never run away from those ills that once plagued his life; even more so now as he uses his past to help someone’s future. In the new documentary called Being Kem on Centric/BET he reveals more of those dark days during his addiction in attempt to bless someone’s life. “It’s a testimony,” expressed Kem. “I am pretty comfortable with myself today and I attribute that to both the good and the bad that has taken place in my life. “ He wants to use his life’s experiences to encourage others to keep moving forward. Moving forward is something Kem has steadily done through his career. On his horizon is a new book. Currently untitled, the book that details Kem’s life is in the early draft stages. Kem is also working on showcasing new talent. L’Renee has signed to his record label, Kemistry. For more information about Kem, visit www. HEALTH

Living Smart to Protect Your Heart

hen it comes to recognizing and responding to the signs of a heart attack, early action can make the difference between life and death. But action even earlier to improve lifestyle and eating habits can make a big difference, too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports about 25 percent of all deaths each year in the United States can be attributed to heart disease, making it the single largest killer of both men and women. Taking a preventive approach and making healthy choices can help manage your risk for a heart attack and other forms of heart disease. Help protect your heart with these healthy lifestyle tips from the CDC: Manage medical conditions. Certain diseases and health conditions are known to put you at greater risk for developing heart disease, including diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Follow your doctor’s guidance to gain control of any medical issues early on. Pay attention to what you eat. This means not only eating plenty of healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, but also reducing or eliminating less healthy options. Foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber can help prevent high blood cholesterol. One good option to start your day right is whole grain cereal. In fact, according to a recent survey, nine out of 10 doctors would recommend Post Shredded Wheat as part of a low sodium, healthy diet to help maintain a healthy heart, reduce the risk of heart disease and support healthy blood pressure levels. Maintain a healthy weight. Exceeding your ideal weight range for your height puts you at greater risk for heart disease. Check with your doctor to

determine whether your weight is in a healthy range. This can generally be determined by calculating your body mass index (BMI). If you are in an overweight or obese range, seek help from nutrition specialists to establish an eating plan that works best for you. Get moving. Exercise not only helps with managing your weight, it can also help with other problems, like high cholesterol and high blood pressure. While adults should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, at least five days a week, you should consult your doctor before starting any exercise plan.

Ceviche-Marinated Grilled Gulf Shrimp Tacos

P

reparing the same old meals week after week can make dinnertime dull. Add some spice to your menu with the fresh flavor of a new protein – nutrient-rich Gulf shrimp. Shrimp is the most popular seafood in the United States. In fact, the average person consumes more than four pounds each year with 83 percent of U.S. shrimp coming from the Gulf Coast. Because of its firm texture and mild flavor, shrimp is actually the perfect substitute when you are looking for an alternative protein. From grilling to serving on salads, incorporating shrimp into your

10

diet is a great way to add some variety and low-calorie nutrition. The nutrient-rich environment found in the Gulf of Mexico results in high-quality seafood with superior flavor and a variety of essential nutrients. Shrimp is lower in calories than many other protein sources, is low in saturated fat and is a good source of vitamins D, B-12, selenium, iron and zinc, which helps ward off diseases such as heart disease. Grilling is an excellent option for preparing shrimp because it allows you to experiment with all different kinds of seasonings and flavors, such as this recipe for marinated shrimp that is a unique take on the traditional taco. Remember that seafood such as fish and shrimp are best grilled over a moderately hot fire and on a surface that has been well oiled or in a barbecue basket. Shrimp is done when the flesh becomes pink, firm and slightly opaque. BOOK REVIEW It’s Not Rocket Science By

Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

Y

our father always told you to reach for the stars. Be the best you can be, he said. Never let obstacles get in your way. Strive for success and challenge yourself – all excellent advice, but how can you harness astronomical success in this, or any economy? In the new book “It’s Not Rocket Science” by Mary Spio, you’ll find some stellar ideas. Back when you graduated from high school or college, you were expected to find a job, work hard, and move up the ladder until it was time to retire. The “new dream,” though, is to find work that will allow you to create “a lifestyle of freedom by defining success your way…” Mary Spio, as it turns out, lives that statement. Born in Syracuse, New York, Spio’s family moved back to their native Ghana when she was a little girl. She grew up hearing her father’s urge to reach for the stars and she took that advice to heart: as a teenager, she came back Stateside, finished high school, joined the Air Force and went to work for NASA. Her passion, however, lay elsewhere and she’s now a serial entrepreneur and “Game Changer.” Game Changers are a new “tribe” of businessperson, says Spio. They “change our world in some way… by altering the way we think… work or the way we live.” Not only do Game Changers ignore the rules, but they ignore conventional, old-school advice, too. Think Copernicus, says Spio, Bill Gates, or Oprah. They share “seven key traits” with all Game Changers. A big imagination is at the top of the list of Game Changer attributes. Imagination leads to inquis-

itiveness, creativity and ideas, and “curiosity drives action.” Game Changers have a deep passion for their work, and they live that passion in their everyday lives. Their compassion drives them, and their days are spent “doing something meaningful.” They possess laser-focus in their actions and their “relentless hustle.” Game Changers are audacious, they make friends with risk and fear, and they have “pit bull tenacity.” Above all, they leave a “mark on the world.” Lately, it seems, the math is simple: idea + passion + desire for change = success. And with “It’s Not Rocket Science,” that adds up nicely. At first, though, on the surface, it doesn’t appear that there’s much new here. Author Mary Spio essentially reiterates a lot of what you’ll find inside similar books. We’re encouraged to follow blueprints comparable to what other volumes espouse… but look closer. The twist is in illustrative stories Spio uses: they’re different, more approachable, more common-man in their scope. Here, impossibly high-positioned, super-famous CEOs are not held up as the only examples of achievement. That gives readers a sense that, indeed, mega-success truly is attainable by anyone. In the end, I liked this book quite a bit because of the above and because it makes entrepreneurship sound fun again. And if that’s the kind of approach you need to become the next sensation, then “It’s Not Rocket Science” is out of this world. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

What Defines Leadership?

t is important for any person to possess those skills and qualities that are necessary to be recognized as an effective leader among his or her peers and followers. A charismatic and influential leader is able to employ the use of strategies to enhance the moods and mindset of his or her follows which motivates them toward achieving a common goal (Fletcher & Clark, 2003). The ability to possess effective leadership skill is instrumental in determining the success or a failure of the goals of a group In order for a person to successfully enlist the help of other people to complete a desired task he or she must be able to appropriately use communication skills, negotiate, empathetic, and is willing to face the sometimes harsh criticism and feedback that are given by his followers for suggested improvements (Chemers, 2000). An effective leader has to be able to take credit for both the bad and the good performance of the people that he or she serves and must ensure that future attempts are geared towards improving the performance of the group. One of the major determinants of a leader’s effectiveness and chances of achieving success are the leaders own behaviors. The behaviors that a leader adopts can remain relatively stable with slight adjustments being made overtime so that he or she is working to ensure the advancement and attainments of the group’s goals (Eagly et al., 2003). The concept of leadership is considered to be a social phenomenon that researchers have been attempting to better understand for some time, particularly

those behavioral styles that are instrumental to creating a productive and effective leader (Yan & Hunt, 2005). I am reminded of the book that was published by Jim Collins (2001) titled, “ Good to Great” which provides the term of a Level 5 Leadership which describes a certain type of leader among companies who are able to make the transition from good to great which was primary based on the type of leader that was at the helm of the company. The unique characteristics of a great leader that can be observed included the presence of humility, confidence, integrity, and professionalism towards achieving excellence even during those times

of great difficulty and significant doubt (Collins, 2001). Furthermore, an effective leader should also possess a good work ethic, intelligence, and the dedication to their values and the welfare of the people that he or she leads. First of all, the ability to have and maintain a good work ethic as a leader can have a ripple effect on a leader’s follower as observation is one of the best methods for any person to learn to adopt new and beneficial behaviors (Reeve, 2009). If followers observe that their leader engaging in behaviors such as staying late to finish assignments and taking on additional responsibilities that are outside the regular duties this can motivate the follower to take on the same proactive behaviors. Also, if a leader is observed to be ingenious in his or her thought process this can enable the leader to brainstorm innovative ideas that his or her follower can work to implement under the ‘leader’s direction and guidance. Additionally, the ability to maintain a certain level of dedication to the maintenance of one’s core values can serve as the driving force for a leader to stir his or her followers into action. It is vital for a leader to be able to motivate his or her followers in order to be successful and this is only possible if the leader ensure that he or she has the best interest the follower in mind and not out to achieve personal gain.
