s Barack Obama’s presidency counts down its last months, amid the raucous babble of the Republican presidential debate, people are beginning to realize how much we will miss Obama’s leadership. He has served with dignity and grace, increasingly rare attributes in American politics. His family has exhibited the values that Americans embrace. He has brought the economy back from the freefall he inherited. Republicans, of course, scorn all things Obama, with particular emphasis on his foreign policy. They argue that he’s destroyed our nation’s credibility, gutted our military and fostered the spread of terror. The din covers the emptiness of the argument. In reality, Obama’s foreign policy will be remembered as making a start toward reason. His record, of course, is complex. The president has enjoyed some remarkable successes -taking out Osama Bin Laden, traducing

While the GOP frontrunner Donald Trump won every state but its most important state Ohio to native son John Kasich. Texan Ted Cruz keeps punching as Trump’s only obstacle in the path forward. Missouri, the Midwest megastate, was too close to call Wednesday morning in the races with both Clinton and Sanders and Trump and Cruz fighting it out to the finish. With 99 percent of all ballots tallied The Associated Press reported 40.8 percent for Trump and 40.6 percent for Cruz. The Show Me State showed 49.6 for Clinton and 49.4 for Sanders. Clinton won big Ohio, Florida, North Carolina and Illinois states sucking the overall air out of Sanders’ rebellious race against her. Trump beat first term Fla. Senator Marco Rubio so bad in Florida that Rubio quit his race. Cruz, in his hometown of Houston and standing with friends and family as Texas’ first elected Hispanic U.S. Senator, was cheered as the only candidate that has won any collection of states that can still stop

Obama Foreign Policy Has Been A Move Toward Reason al-Qaida, the nuclear deal with Iran, normalization of relations with Cuba (and thus with other neighbors across the hemisphere). He’s also met with frustrations as well. He was unable to extract us from Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Syria and Libya. He failed to close Guantanamo. He’s also asserted, dangerously, unprecedented executive prerogatives in the use of drones, assassination, the hunting of whistleblowers, mass surveillance and more. But Obama’s biggest legacy is his effort to turn America away from the interventionist appetites of both the neoconservatives and the “indispensable nation” liberal activists. In a remarkable set of interviews with Jeffry Goldberg in the Atlantic, Obama argues that while the United States must lead, it cannot police the world. We must be both “hardheaded” and “big hearted.” We have to be clear about our real security concerns, learn to pick our spots, and not allow ourselves to be dragged into every civil war or humanitarian crisis. The president is clear -- and clearly right -- on the priority of threats facing the U.S. Despite the popular terrors about terror, he understands that the Islamic State is not an existential threat to the U.S. In contrast, climate change potentially threatens the world if we don’t act to counter it. Similarly, the president argues that the Middle East is no longer terribly important to U.S. interests, particularly with our increasing energy independence. The U.S.-China

relationship, in contrast, is the “most critical.” Sustaining a peaceful rise of China that will make it a partner in securing international order is far more important to our security than all of the civil wars in the Middle East. Obama believes, against the clamor of an interventionist foreign policy establishment, that overextension in the Middle East is far more destructive than restraint in the region. As his adviser Ben Rhodes summarizes, the president’s view is that “overextension in the Middle East will ultimately harm our economy, harm our ability to look for other opportunities and to deal with other challenges, and, most important, endanger the lives of American service members for reasons that are not in the direct American national-security interest.” According to Goldberg, Obama also has a common sense position about Putin. He sees Russia as weak, not strong, but understands that it has direct security concerns about Ukraine and Georgia on its border. That fact is, as Obama says, the U.S. is not going to war over Ukraine. Russia is prepared to do that. “People respond to what their imperatives are, and if it’s very important to somebody and it’s not that important to us, they know that and we know that.” Mexico has had to learn to live with the United States; Ukraine similarly has to learn to live with Russia. This sounds like common sense, but it challenges the consensus of the foreign policy establishment that believes the U.S. is the only superpower

and can “win,” as Donald Trump would say, simply by flexing its muscles. But of course they argue, we must be prepared to maintain credibility and strike if someone calls our bluff. Obama clearly understands the dangers of this posture. Obama has made mistakes, like any president does. But he has come to understand the limits of U.S. power to direct global events, even as he realizes the importance of U.S. leadership to force global action. He calls on us to understand our limits and to set real priorities. He does this in the face of a national security state that is permanently engaged across the world, in the face of liberal and conservative interventionists who scorn common sense as weakness, and in the face of allies who are happy to have the U.S. carry the load. Listen to the posturing and the bloviating of the Republican contenders for the presidency. Listen to the drone of the think tankers and academics calling for escalation without thinking of consequences. It doesn’t take long to realize that how much we should value the first steps that President Obama has taken toward reason. You can write to the Rev. Trump from being nominated by a party Trump hadn’t identified with until now. “Tonight was a good night. Tonight we continued to win delegates and tonight we continue to march to 1,237 the delegates needed to win the Republican nomination. After tonight America now has a clear choice going forward,” continued Cruz at a

Galleria hotel. He credited Rubio for having made the Republican Primary “stronger because of the ideas he brought to this race.” “For those who supported Marco we welcome you with open a r m s . S t a r t i n g t h i s We d n e s d a y morning, every Republican has a clear choice: Only two campaigns have

a plausible path to the Republican nomination: ours and Donald Trump’s. Nobody else has any mathematical possibility whatsoever,” he said. Kasich, a former state and federal legislator and second term governor that in his re-election famously won 25 percent of the African American vote, won his home Ohio as the only obstacle to Trump winning everything Tuesday night. Rubio told his backers in Ohio to back Kasich but Kasich did not do the same for Rubio in Florida, which keeps Kasich fighting but knocks out Rubio. Back home in Houston excitement continues to heat up with regard to what happens should Cruz become President, Vice President, Attorney General or anything that would position him to vacate his senate seat. Gov. Greg Abbott could tap Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick or even Texas General Land Office Commissioner George P. Bush as the interim. Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro of San Antonio could run in the May 2017 Special Election without having to giveup his Congressional seat. BOOK REVIEW

Writing My Wrongs: Life, Death, and Redemption in an American Prison

ou can’t judge a book by its cover. Even so, we do it all the time: we see someone’s outside and think we know what’s inside. We base it on his looks, or his youthful indiscretions – things, as in the new book “Writing My Wrongs” by Shaka Senghor, that he may deeply regret. Little James White wanted to be a doctor when he grew up. Enveloped by the love of his parents, he was secure in the idea that he could maintain his honors status and do good for people in his Detroit community. But then his parents split, reconciled, and split again; his mother took her frustrations out on him and she kicked him out of her house. Jay was just “a little boy” of fourteen then, but it didn’t take long for someone to offer him a job selling cocaine at five dollars a “rock.” He started earning big money, wearing cool clothes, getting girls, smoking crack. By seventeen, he’d been in trouble with the law and had been given many second chances. By eighteen, he’d been shot in the leg and foot. By nineteen, he was in prison for shooting another man, killing him. In his first six weeks in County Jail, Jay saw it all: rape, robbery, beat-downs, murder. He learned the “law of the jungle” and knew that he could never let small disrespects slide. It was a whole new world, but a sentence of up to forty-two years for firearm possession and murder put him in another universe. Years later, transferred to various prisons within the state and carrying a new name and a new assault charge, Shaka Senghor promised himself repeatedly that he would change, only to have it beaten back by prison life and the deep anger and guilt he carried. Finally, mid-way through a four-and-a-half

year stint in ad-seg, he “took a long and painful look” at himself and equipped his cell “like a classroom,” reconnecting with the Black history he loved and the religious studies he craved. “But the real changes,” he says, “came when I started keeping a journal.” I’m glad he did that. You will be, too, once you’ve started “Writing My Wrongs,” but don’t think for a minute that this is an easy book to read. One expects passages of brutality in a book about prison, but author Shaka Senghor takes it a step beyond, to something of nightmares or movies. That he was moved from prison to prison makes the chaos even keener; prisoners, says Senghor, sometimes lose track of time and readers could be forgiven for the same. Enter the maelstrom from the safety of your Shaka Senghor sofa, in fact, and the ending of this book – Senghor’s hard-won redemption and afterlife – will remind you that you’ve been holding your breath awhile. “Writing My Wrongs” may be right for a certain kind of book group. For sure, it’s something every young person should absolutely read. It’s uplifting, triumphant to the skies and, once you start it, you’ll be sorry to reach its back cover. The Love Affair with Parish Blair: The Self- Love Series

want to share something very special to me with you. It’s about the work that I’ve been involved in for over ten years called Loving Session. This work allows me to assist people by creating a space that teaches those who have mastered being givers, how to receive…. just receive. Receive love, understanding, nurturing, kindness and affection. W e a l l n e e d t h o s e t h i n g s . My life experience has shown me to stop and take the time to love myself first, before I start to unconsciously go into the mode of self-sacrifice. If you identify yourself as more of a giver than a receiver, you may want to consider this… We also must be joyful Receivers in order to allow others to experience the joy of being Givers. Remember, whatever you put out, you will get back. So if you find yourself giving more than you receive, you’re probably holding back countless blessing you’ve been praying for because you’re sending out the vibration that is contradicting your prayers by not allowing yourself to receive just as much as you are giving. The Loving Session provides a sacred space for you to receive self-love and feed the God energy inside of you. Self-love ignites the Spark of Divine within. The chemistry between self-love and the Divine Spark creates amazing dynamic energy, be God is love. When we love ourselves, we intensify the power of God within us. That’s when we are in the healthiest space to love others. Love is the most abundant and powerful energy that we can access to

increase our personal quality of life, as well as the lives around us. Then we become more balanced and centered givers and receivers. In the next series of articles we will be exploring practical ways to experience self-love in four areas of life physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. In the interim, take some time to review the

TSU Athletes Winning On All Courts

FEATURE

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

P

laying ball is a pastime of little boys everywhere across the country. With each bounce of the ball one can see the glimmer in their eyes as they picture themselves on the courts of high school, college, and the NBA. But how many of those little boys picture themselves in a cap and gown? Not too many. A recent report from Penn GSE’s Shaun Harper claims that there are shocking racial disparities in student-athlete graduation rates continuing despite skyrocketing NCAA revenues. Harper notes that although big name universities are receiving high rewards from the performance of black male athletes on the court that the same black male athletes are loosing academically. Black male athletes graduation rates are poor compare to most groups of undergraduates. Harper noted that during the 2014-2015 academic year, 53.6 percent of Black male studentathletes graduated within six years, compared to 68.5 percent of student-athletes overall. Breaking that down even further when comparing Black male undergraduates to undergraduates in general and the gap widens. In 2003, NCAA implemented the Academic Progress Rate (APR) as a way to reform the academics at universities by holding them accountable for the academic progress of their student athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of 8

each student-athlete for each academic term. This was the first time NCAA developed a program of this sort. A university’s APR is calculated by a combination of eligibility and retention of all student-athletes. Here at home Texas Southern University looked at its graduation rates and thought they could improve. In 2008, TSU was listed among the worst schools due to low graduation rates with a

total of 29%. However, they were able to pull that up 54% having 58 student athletes graduate in six years compared to 14 in 2009. These percentages reflected positively with their APRs coming up from 833 in 2009 to 970 in recent years.

March 17 - March 23, 2016

www.StyleMagazine.com

Why was TSU successful? They hired tutors and others to work with athletes on a personal level to meet them where they were academically. The staff went through professional development workshops to strengthen skills and teach with a new approach. Students and faculty began to see results and the NCAA took notice. NCAA awarded TSU an $80,000+ Accelerated Academic Success Program Initiative Grant for the 2015-2016 school year to continue their work of improving the success rate of their athletes. When you see TSU athletes in places like The Big Dance of March Madness they did so with hard work on and off the court. The tenacity of faculty coupled with that of student athletes allows TSU to consistently improve their graduation rate and make them a sought after institution of higher learning. And the discipline and strength that is built into their athletic program will continue to make student athletes dance all the way to the big game for years to come. Texas Southern may have lost in the opening-round game of the National Invitation Tournament to Valparaiso ending with an 18-15 overall record. But they are still winners with academic rewards that will far outlast their days on the court. For more information, visit www.tsu.edu.

ENTERTAINMENT By Raegan Boutte, Entertainment Writer

I

f you grew up watching this classic Disney tale then you’re in for TUTS next tantalizing treat. Mary Poppins, the musical, is based on both the Walt Disney Film and the original novel stories written by P.L. Travers. The musical is currently playing at the Hobby center starring actors Danny Gardner (Bert), Sean Graul (Michael Banks), Kelly Lamonte (Jane banks), Courtney Markowiz (Winifred Banks), and Drew Mc Vety (George Banks). If you are unfamiliar with this classic tale, Mary Poppins tells the story of George and Winifred Banks who live on Cherry Tree Lane with their disobedient, spoiled children, whose latest nanny has just quit with a fit. Magically appearing Mary Poppins enters, the “practically perfect” nanny who teaches with hocus-pocus and connects with the children like no other nanny has. Once Mary suddenly leaves the position,

fill her place. With the household now in complete disarray, Mary Pippins revisits this unsettled family with much heart, humility, and a bit of her magic and teaches this family the greatest lesson of all. Clear standouts and audience favorites were the adorable amazing talented kids Jane Banks played by Kelly Lomonte, currently a freshman at Village High school and Houston native Sean Graul (Michael Banks) in his second main stage production of TUTS. Christina Decicco was a sure hit as the beloved, stern and spunky Mary Poppins. Her performance and vocal range made this a star-making role for her no doubt. I was simply blown away by her performance, range and acting abilities. The costumes also were my favorite; think bold and bright colors that set off a fun, unfounded, imaginary energy all on their own. The incredible set design by Tim Mackabee had to be

one of my favorites. This creative set design effortless takes the audiences to many magical places; you will be transported to an enchanting park and right out side of their chimerical home on Cherry Tree Lane. I was also just as wowed with the ensemble cast, many of them highly skilled and trained dancers no doubt. If you love dance and sing-a-long songs, and magic-this musical really captures it all. Linda Goodrich who takes on the tasks of both director and choreographer really showcases her abilities with this production. There are ensemble dance routines, crafty footwork, ballet and lots of flying sequences so be prepared to be fully entertained. If you’re a fan of the original movie you won’t be disappointed, Mary Poppins the musical also featured many of the hit songs from the best selling movie-favorites such as: “Chi, Chim Cheree”, “Practically Perfect”, “A Spoonful of Sugar” and last but not least, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” Bring the entire family to this Mary Poppins the musical. It is a tale fit for everyone and it brings to the stage a great lesson of following your dreams while not getting too caught up in the overtly, disciplined rules of life. Mary Poppins is playing at Houston’s own Hobby Center from March 8-20th. To purchase tickets now and find out more about this awesome show visit TUTS online at www.tuts.com/shows/mary-poppins.

HEALTH

Opt for Healthier Options at Rodeo to Reduce Potential for Acid Reflux •Belly discomfort •Unexplained cough •Acid regurgitation •Bitter acidic taste in mouth If these symptoms continue for a prolonged period of time it can injure the esophagus, resulting in potentially serious conditions such as esophagitis or Barrett’s esophagus, said El-Serag.

T

he Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is known for its delicious foods but watch out for too much of a good thing. An expert at Baylor College of Medicine says eating too much of certain rodeo or fair foods could lead to acid reflux or make it worse. “The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo carries reasonably healthy food choices such as barbecue, chicken, beans and turkey legs,” said Dr. Hashem B. El-Serag, section chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at Baylor “However, it also offers exotic unhealthy foods that are meant to be for entertainment value.” Foods such as fried ice cream and fried chocolate bars are some of the rodeo’s most popular foods but also the unhealthiest because they are extremely high in calories and in fats.

Take Action El-Serag, who serves as the program leader of the Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Program at Baylor’s Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, recommends healthy habits to avoid and ease the symptoms of acid reflux. The consequences of people eating these foods on a regular basis are insulin resistance, high cholesterol, fatty liver issues and obesity, said ElSerag. In the short term, fried foods may bring on episodes of reflux disease because of their high fat content. “Gastrointestinal issues such as acid reflux may flare up during the rodeo season because of the extra consumption of these unhealthy foods,” he said. Symptoms Acid reflux is a condition where the contents of the stomach, which is mostly acid, do not stay in the stomach and instead go up into the esophagus. Some of the symptoms include:

•Modify your eating habits: small portions and low fats Avoid peer pressure to engage in binge eating/drinking •Pack healthy snacks •Increase your physical activity •Do not go to sleep or lie down immediately after eating •Take a brief walk after meals •Use over-the-counter antacids or acid-suppressing medications (for 1 to 2 days) •If you do binge eat at the rodeo, make up for it over the next few days by choosing healthy behaviors •El-Serag says these tips will also help you avoid health complications down the road.
